what i love so much about the 'going my way' scene is dick knows what he's doing so he's being coy and short like he always does, and even before dick is done saying 'so don't tell me' lew is jumping out of his seat to blab immediately. he found out the plans and was like, welp time to find my boy best friend and just come out with it. lew is kind of guarded with other people, even if it is charming, and with dick he just like...can't help but to show his cards every time

oh, don't get me started on the "going my way" because I have a whole rant about that.

first of all: yes, you are correct. lewis cannot seem to control himself around dick. i've said it all before (i'm a broken record now), but it's almost like loving someone as earnest and honest as dick has the effect of pulling truth from nix, whether he wants to or not. it works on dick, too, because we never really see dick as vulnerable as he is with anybody else but nix. they both recognize each other, and because they both recognize each other, the truth just comes pouring out of them like water through a broken glass. i mean. god. it shows, even in the VERY FIRST SCENE WITH THEM, as I've talked about before. they are INCAPABLE of lying or hiding from each other!!!!

second: i will never shut up about this, but the fact that there were only two instances wherein "going my way" was uttered (the second in an echo of the first) when it would make much more sense if there were three instead? well. i am happy to report that THERE WAS AN ORIGINAL THIRD "GOING MY WAY?"!!!!!!! this was from the original script with a scene from D-day eve:

notice how just before nix is introduced into the scene, the camera flashes over a picture of dick and de-etta, a girl who is, essentially, dick's girlfriend at the time.

THE FUCKING SUBTEXT OF THAT????? oh, here is a photo of a girl i am sweet on (well I mean in real life dick never referred to her as his girlfriend but as a girl he was talking to but like. cmon now, boy. that is your girlfriend), unceremoniously shoved into my bag JUST AS my boy best friend (with whom i share everything, from the sarcastic side i never let anyone else see, to my most vulnerable moments) is introduced into frame???? asking me, in that same flirtatious manner, "going my way?" my answer to it being????? a fucking smile?????

Whumpee's injuries being fatal enough the pain overshadowed their initial source of pain (sicky whumpee, which previously was kept secret) and only discovered once they're admitted to hospital in the nigh of time. The "worse had come to worst" situation and the Caretaker's concern isn't about Whumpee being unconscious now, it's whether they'll wake up.

Fainting mid sentence and/or fainting slowly. Mid sentence at Whumper's hands, and slowly losing consciousness (methodically, one sense at a time) when Caretaker desperately carrying them on their back.

Whumpee's frantic inhales, rapid blinking, and uncontrolled tremors from the fear of losing consciousness. Maybe the situation isn't rescue, it is an escape situation with freedom just a few steps away.

CPR situation where Whumpee didn't show any sign of consciousness and Caretaker's stubbornly insisted they still could be saved. It feels forever, it feels fleeting, and with each second Caretaker could only sobs and calling out Whumpee's name loudly. Caretaker ended up losing consciousness once Whumpee regain theirs.

Whumpee losing consciousness when Caretaker have been so close to find them and ultimately resulting in failed rescue.

Shout out to unconscious whumpees!

Whumper dragging them away by the collar/back of the shirt or by under whumpee's armpits

Caretaker finding them after a while and not knowing whether they're alive or not until they check their pulse

Caretaker, after finding Whumpee, has to drag them to safety (fireman's carry, bridal style– go crazy!)

The blinking and the –little or long– struggle before whumpee finally collapses

Perhaps Whumpee is too heavy and/or their wound is too deep/large that it takes more than one caretaker to carry them to safety

Whumpee's limbs and head lolling like they're a lifeless puppet, worsening Caretaker's concerns

just saw someone on tiktok discussing whether or not a character "deserved a redemption arc" and i am losing my mind. we as a society have lost sight of what a redemption arc IS. it doesn't mean a character is rewarded by the narrative. it doesn't mean the other characters forgive them. it only refers to a character acknowledging their mistakes and choosing to better themselves, which any person can do, no matter how terrible. of course there's no shortage of badly executed redemption arcs, and a character who willfully committed countless atrocities having a change of heart after a single conversation about the power of friendship is simply poor writing and unrealistic. not every character who CAN change WILL. but there is zero value in debating whether a character "deserved" to be redeemed. no one in fiction or reality needs to be "worthy" of making better choices. there is no fixed point where a person is "too evil" and therefore forbidden from doing anything differently. it's always worth it to change, and implying otherwise is both a genuinely harmful ideology and bad literary analysis
