**i obviously am not tom, nor do i know the guy so this is all just in fun**

warnings: panic, some angst, and fluff

Tom is not the kind of guy who begs for a family. He wants one, but everything happens in time and when it is supposed to. He believes that when things are meant to transpire, they most certainly will.

Having said that, unplanned pregnancies are, for lack of a better word, unexpected. With everything going on in terms of acting in plays and working on the new Loki series, now was not the most perfect time to have unforeseen changes occur, especially not one as big as bringing a child into the world. 

The moment you start getting sick in the morning, you start to worry. Not trying to panic, you leave it all alone. Your period isn’t due for another week, so this isn’t anything to worry over currently. The panic could wait until things were more sure.

The next week came...and it went with no sign of a period whatsoever. It was still not time to panic yet. Periods could be unpredictable and a week late meant nothing. Tomorrow you could pick up a pregnancy test and that would be the end all for the situation. Going to bed that night, your stomach was turning. Tomorrow could mean the change of everything.

Tom was gone, as he was most mornings recently. Normally you would go down to the theater to watch rehearsals, but today you had a mission. Wrapping yourself up to protect from the morning cold, you grab your keys and drive to the nearest drug store to pick up the tiny stick that would predict your future.

After the third attempt, and a whole container of orange juice later, you come up with the little pink plus sign once again. Three strikes, you knew what that meant. You nervously grab the packages and tests, throwing the trash into the large dumpster outside. You keep one of the tests, wrapping your hands around it and holding it to your chest as you go back inside. 

Unlocking the door, Tom enters into a dark house. You normally don’t like to keep the lights off when you’re alone, so he instantly becomes a bit worried. “Love, I’m home!” He calls out into the seemingly empty house and hears a small clatter come from the kitchen. 

You have nearly everything together when you hear the front door open and Tom call to you from the entrance. Nerves catch in your throat and you choose to not respond, fearing you’ll break down and ruin the hopefully pleasant surprise.

It’s not that you’re afraid of Tom leaving you or acting out against you for the baby you’re now carrying; he has always been the level headed one and carries himself with an aura of calming energy that always did the trick to calm your rattling nerves. No, you were more afraid of potentially putting a damper on his already busy life. The last thing you want is to strain him, so whatever you both decide is best you are willing to do. You just can’t help but hope that this decision will involve hearing the scampering of little feet down the hall in a year from now. 

“Love, this is absolutely breathtaking.” You turn at the sound of his voice and watch his expression as he takes in the dining room. You had placed candles and small bunches of wildflowers around the room; the table housed two plates with a small array of different food that came as a result of you not being able to make up your mind on what to make. It didn’t matter though, Tom enjoyed everything you put in the effort to make for him. 

“Hi.” It’s all you can think to say. Tom laughs softly and crosses the room to embrace you. He places a small kiss to your lips and smiles down at you. “Hello there.”

Nervously, you pull away from Tom and take the last little dish over to the table. He looks after you questioningly, but moves to pull out your chair despite your odd behavior. You sit and take a shaky breath, not knowing how long you can keep such a heavy piece of information to yourself. 

Ten minutes into dinner, Tom is already getting to work on attempting to settle some of your nerves. At first he tries to get you to talk to him a bit more, but he soon picks up on the fact that you aren’t in the right headspace to lead a conversation. Ever patient, he dives into a story about his rehearsal today that he hopes will make you laugh. It does, but you find yourself feeling guilty for not giving him your full attention. 

“So love, what did you get up to today?” He looks back at you, gently prompting you to speak. At that moment you see so much care and patience in his eyes that it comes out faster than you can think to stop it.

“I’m pregnant.” Tom’s eyes go from gentle to shocked in less than a second. His mouth opens and shuts a few times and you can’t breathe; not until he reacts. 

Finally, he finds his voice again and looks at you imploringly. “Are you sure?” The question isn’t angry or accusing, just curious. Reaching into your pocket you pull out the test you saved and slide it across the table to him. 

Warmth radiates from his hand as it comes down over yours, taking the test and lifting to see for himself. You still can’t quite gauge his reaction, but you do hear his breath hitch and that causes you to spiral.

“I know it’s not good timing. I can take care of the baby and work though, my job is flexible enough that it won’t cause any problems.” Still, he says nothing. It’s almost as if his eyes are glued to the test. Maybe he’s silently willing the little pink plus sign to disappear.

“Tom, I understand if you don’t want us.” The words are quiet and, like his eyes were stuck to the test, yours drop to stare at your fidgeting hands. 

Those words float over to his ears and instantly pull him from the endless stream of thoughts he had been having. They hurt him; stab at his heart in a way that he never wants to feel again.

Tom rushes over and kneels in front of you. His hands come up to take yours into his palms and the expression on his face is anything but angry. 

“Don’t want you? How could I ever not? You’re right, it’s not necessarily the most ideal timing but that isn’t anyone's fault at all love.” You look into his eyes and they are completely sincere. He doesn’t blame you for getting pregnant; which, looking back on it you now realize was a ridiculous thought in entirety. 

The smile that spreads across his face causes you to wearily smile back. “The only regret I have about any of this is that I won’t be as present as I would wish to be for the next few months. I’ll do everything I can to be here though, I promise you.” You lean forward and pull him into a hug as tears start to fall down your cheeks. You guys were going to be okay; everything was going to be okay.

“I love you, Tom.” He smiles and pulls back to press a kiss to your forehead. “Don’t ever doubt that I feel the same. You and this child will know nothing but love.”

Chapter : Hiroshima Route Prologue / Opening -part 1-

If I take a look at the calendar, it's almost the end of summer....

Even so, the heat still as hot as in the middle of summer.

One day, my condition wasn't quite good that I need to stay on bed.

I got a fever since last night, and I didn't leave my futon until this morning.

Haruho :

*Cough cough*

Richard :

"Are you okay?"

Haruho :

"Mm.... It's alright. Also, I'm sorry...."

Richard :

"Why are you apologizing? Sick person didn't need to apologize at all"

Haruho :

"But.... I've been causing Richard too much trouble since yesterday...."

Richard :

"Hey! hey! Don't get in low spirit and putting your face down like that, that's no good y'know~"

"I know that having strong sense of responsibility is one of your good traits, even so, at least when you're sick, please be more dependant on people around you"

Haruho :

"...yes. Thank you, Richard"

Richard :

"It's nothing!"

"If there's anything I can help you with, please tell me, okay? I'll do anything!

"Okay"

Richard is always kind to me who is having cough.

Talking about Richard.... Actually, he is a foreigner who are currently living in homestay in my house. He come from English.

Since long ago, my dad and Richard's dad has been close friends...

And so, when Richard come to Japan, it's decided that he will stay here.

He is a gentle person, or you can say he's very kind and polite.

Since he like Japan very much, he always brimming with curiosity.

He really want to know about anything related to Japanese.

He kinda like a full spirit brother to me.

Richard :

"It's about the time you should eat something, I'll go and made some porridge first."

Haruho :

"Thank you. But, Richard... You can make a porridge?"

Richard :

"Of course! Yesterday your mom taught me how to make it!"

Haruho :

"Is that so.... Then, I'll be in your care"

Richard :

"Understood!"

After smiling at me, Richard went to the kitchen and disappear from my sights.

Richard is always enthusiastically nursing me.

Whenever I opened my eyes after having a nightmare, he is always besides me. Thanks to that, I can feel a bit relaxed even after having a nightmare.

*Sighs*

But still... Getting sick is really....

My body feel hot and sluggish.

I feel like a in daze, having my head absent-mindedly.

That's why, when I'm alone in the room, the silence will immediately permeate.

If I'm alone, im sure it will be lonely as I need to take care of myself alone. I'm glad Richard is here....

Talking about that....

As my minds in a daze, I recalled about some memories of the past.

(at that time... When I were feeling anxious, there was a boy who filled my empty heart)

As I closed my eyes, from a long long buried memories, his figure comes to mind.

(what a nostalgic feeling.... Ah, no...)

I can recalled it vividly, as if our last meeting wasn't long ago, but happened just recently.

But, the boy in my mind... He was much younger than the current me.

So many times has passed, but I can't stop thinking about it.

---Ah, that's right.

Whenever I feel sick and lonely, it always made me recalled about those days.

Those days... When I were still a little girl---

Back then when I still 6th grade on elementary school, I lived in Hiroshima.

The me at that time, she were more shy person compared to my current self.

I were transferred into different schools so many times due to my parents job. On the other side, I'm also not good at making friends, thus I don't have many friends.

What worse, during the time when I moved to Hiroshima, my condition suddenly worsened.

Eventhough the symptoms weren't that bad, i had to be hospitalized for a while.

After finally getting closer with my classmates, but now I couldn't meet them.

Being hospitalized alone, it was so lonely for me who were still elementary schoolers.

Haruho :

"Umm, Mom.... I beg you, please come to visit me everyday, okay?"

Asking something like that, I just want to be spoiled by my mother after being hospitalized.

But, since my mother is very busy, she couldn't keep thinking about me only

After being hospitalized, she always visiting me everyday fo a while, but...

Mom :

"I'm sorry, Haruho. Tommorow mom have a lot of works to do, so I might not be able to come visit you. But, mom will surely come to visit you again"

Haruho :

"But, Mom...."

Mom :

"Mom really sorry.... But, you are a good girl right? I'm sure you will be okay"

Haruho :

"....yes...."

Since mom said something like that, it can't be helped.

(Even if mom not coming and I alone here, I must stay obedient)

(Because I am a 'good girl' after all)

I keep telling that to myself and secluded myself inside that sick room.

Because it was quite scary for my little self to wandering out alone in hospital.

But, as I spent day by day alone, gradually i started to enjoy having time for myself.

Haruho :

"I already finished reading all the books that mom brought for me"

(should I try to ask mom to buy me some new books when she coming here? Just right in the moment there's a book that I want to read...)

(but hey... Now that I take a look to the outside...)

"The weather outside seems nice..."

"Hmm... Should I go out for a little bit...?"

Just like that, I try to encouraged myself.

That day, for the first time, I went out from my sick room.

(Ah---- so this is what's outside the hospital building....)

(What a beautiful garden. There are plenty of flowers in bloom)

(...eh?)

As I walking around the garden, I caught a figure of small animal hiding behind some plants.

(Ah! There's a cat here!)

Haruho :

"Come kitty, come here..."

As I try to approach it slowly, the cat suddenly ran off.

Haruho :

"Ah, Mr cat, wait---"

I try cat chase that ran away cat.

As I trying to run with all my might, finally I am able to catch up the cat.

Haruho :

"It's okay Mr. Cat. I won't do anything bad to you."

As I try to reach out my palm, the cat seems a bit hesitant. But, after a while, finally the cat come closer and begin to lick my hand.

(Eh? He licked my hand)

"Hehe... He's so cute"

As I crouching down and hold the cat, at that time....

Haruho :

".. .?"

I can see the tip of someone's shoes.

(Who...?)

Just like that, I try to raised my head.

"What a cute cat..."

Haruho

"...y-yes."

There, standing a figure of a boy with somewhat fragile atmosphere.

Eddie opened his eyes and squinted at the light above him. He turned to the left, noticing the wires and monitors showing his heart beats and pulse presure. Continuing scanning his room, he could see Dustin and Robin.

-Where... Am i?- God his throat felt so dry.

-EDDIE OH MY GOD ARE YOU ALRIGHT?

-DUSTIN STOP. -Robin grabes him by his arm and janked him off to his chair. -You are in the hospital. Here, some water.

-IM GONNA CALL THE NURSE.

Eddie snorted and turned his gaze to Robin.

-So... How much time i was in here?

-Like a week or so.

-How did i end up here?

-Eleven brought you. You were floating and everything.

Eddie nodded. He remembered being eaten by bloody bats, Dustin crying, his speech of not running away... God that was so embarrasing. Why did he even do that? The adrenaline? To be a fucking hero? God that was so...

-STUPID. THAT WAS STUPID.

-Steve! Stop!

Steve entered the room looking furious. Dustin and Max were trying to (and failing) to calm him down.

-What was stupid, Harrington?

Steves head snapped towards him, eyes wide and mouth hanging a little bit open. He could see the exact moment his tense shoulders relaxed and his gaze showed relief and content.

-Oh thank god youre alive.-exclamed while engulfing him in a hug. Or whatever thing he was doing.

-Me too, Steve. Me too.

-WHAT, DID YOU THINK 'oh no! I always run away from my issues so maybe i can play the hero slash decoy and save my friends!' i want to smack you so bad in the head but youre in the hospital and i...

Eddie smiled and teased -you can punch me when i get out of here, if you want.

Steve scoffed and furrowed his eyebrows- if there was an exact moment you needed to run, IT WAS THAT!

He rolled his eyes, he just woke up for gods sake. His body hurted, breathing hurted, moving hurted, existing hurted. Thankfully, Robin caught upon that and grabed Steve by his collar and tuged him off.

-Alright, dingus. For someone so worried and sleep deprived, you sure have a lot to say.

-TO SLEEP.

Sighing in defeat, Steve got off the room threatening Eddie with a glare and mouthing 'ill kill you'.

Damn he could kill him whenever.

He is hungry.

-Sometimes, after a big trauma for the body, it goes thru a healing process and cant digest some things. But you have nothing wrong. Actually, you are healing very fast. Must be your awesome inmune system.

Ok, Eddie didnt have an 'awesome inmune system', he gets sick every minimum climate change. A cold morning and a warm evening? A cold. He goes outside in a windy day? He gets fever.

So why the fuck does he have an 'awesome inmune system'?

The nurses face perked up, smiled and started to explain to him that, due to his worrying blood loss they had to do a blood analisis(?) and study it for helping on the recovery.

-Who could have thought you are AB+? You made our job easier. Anyways im gonna get you some cherry gelatin.

He... He is not ab positive.

-Eddie, is everything alright?

-Dustin im, im not ab positive- his friend looked at him like he grown another head.

-Dude de test was clinic i thing you are.

-I received a lot of transfussion due to me getting sick when i was yourger. I think i know what blood type i am. I am O negative. I can done to everyone but receive O negative.

Eddie felt a pang in his chest, Dustin didnt believe him. His friend noticed and reassured he, in fact, believed him.

-Okay, listen. We were joking when you were in a coma. We theorized that maybe you could become a vampire, you know, being bitten by bloodthirsty bats and surviving and everything. But what if...

-What if i really start to become a vampire?- Eddie finished his train of thoughts- thats, actually imposible right?

-I dont know, man. After fighting monsters from another dimension and they cassualy fits D&D bosses... Maybe...

Eddie glanced nervously at Dustin, watching his gears working in his mind. God he felt so useless, he is a Dungeon Master god dammit! He knows every character in the game. But he cant think straight. He just, cant.

-EDDIE!- Dustin suddenly called, as if he werent in a fucking bed in front of him. -Appart from your blood type? Do you have another thing you think is weird?

-Um, i dont know?- How the fuck would he know? He didnt make a list about weird symptons that started after a woke up from a coma induced by being eaten by interdimensional bats: number one, his change on blood type; number two - I COULDNT EAT MY RAVIOLI. I LOVE RAVIOLI.

Dustin widdened his eyes and shouted- I ASKED THEM TO PUT A LOT OF GARLIC AND CHEESE IN IT. GARLIC, EDDIE.

He got the covers off of his body and started lifting his hospital clothes.

-Ew! Dude! Warn a guy next time- Dustin covered his eyes and turned away. He smiled.

-That wasnt what he said.

-Oh my god!

He lifted his gown to reveal his abdomen.

He almost didnt have any scars.

-Dustin?

The boy turned at him after hearing the horror in Eddies voice.

-I dont have any scars.

Running to him, Dustin traced his fingers thru his abdomen and sides. Drawing every scar with his fingers and whispering 'this cant be real' 'oh my gods' and 'another shit to deal' 'give me a break'.

-Ok so, youre the smart one, tell me another thing we can do to prove im converting to a vampire.

-To what are you converting into?

Both Dustin and Eddie turned their heads towards the open door, Steve leaning in.

-STEVE, MATE. You woke up!

-Yeah, yeah. Answer. Now.

-We think Eddie is turning into a vampire.

Eddie blushed embarrased. For fucks sake, what is he? A schoolgirl?

I want to assure you about the degrees: I have twodegrees: my BA is in History with a focus in East Asia, and my MA is in Historyand Museum Studies. Both of these are far away from the majority of BusinessMajors I’ve met, though there’s a few of us –the Few, the Proud– Fine Arts andHumanities folks here too. I had them because I did both back to back, butyeah, all you need is a BA in any field.You could do something focused on Asia, or Japan, but you could also be aComputers major and get in. That’s not a make-it-or-break-it thing: you justneed a degree.

Coming in with that background –I typically focus inJapan from the 1980s to current, with a heavy emphasis on Women’s Culture interms of music, fashion, heritage, and feminism, though I want to expand a similarrange of 1970 to current to South Korea, but that beside the point– means thatI was coming here to emphasis the Ein JET: a cultural exchange where I learned and stopped being a teacher, andbecame student to an entire nation.

So the easy answer is that there’s a lot you can takeback. There’s a bicultural identity, there’s an openness to that comes frombeing explicitly Foreign too: you gain a lot of understanding and sympathy towhat you have, and what another culture functions as. I think that can be lifechanging and a solution to the social-cultural climate our world’s in right now:understanding.

So I came here with a broad goal: learn about Japan.I’ve spent about 6 years –and probably almost all 52,560 hours of those years–focused on studying Japan. I cut my teeth on breaking the very prejudicedstereotypes I had of Japan in my early years of college, then went on to writeabout yukata and Japanese women’sculture and heritage in my MA. Number One: Community and Communal Effort

Community is a big part of Japan’s social-culturalidentity.

“The stake that stands out gets pounded down” –ugh, Iprobably messed that all up, but Ibelieve that’s close– is a phrase for a reason: standing out, being aberrant, makingtrouble or being different alter social dynamic, and can break harmony andcause issue .That can certainly be difficult to navigate, and at large,something I don’t always agree with as a way to handle social issues, but tuckbetween is a deep sense of community, a “we’re all in this together” vibe thatI –as an outside– really appreciate.

I don’t think I’m a part of a lot of communities. I’man American, sure, but I’ve never really fit in with the “Black community”, the“nerd community” can be grating, the “cosplay community” differs wildly inAmerica and Japan and can have the same issue as nerds –American, not Japan– andthough I have friends and that’s acommunity, I’m not so quick to call it that because it feels markedly differentto me. They’re my community but more, if you get what I mean.

However, the community of Fukushima City is certainlythe kind of community I’m focusing on: tight-knit, strong, and supportive.

Now, this may be because of a lot of reasons: location,proximity to others, culture, 3.11 certainly, but it goes farther back anddeeper than the disaster and really takes from both culture and manner. There’sa sense of support from folks in Tohoku, though I believe Tohoku is one of thebest, and kindest, regions in Japan. There’s a lot of smiles, lots of kindness,and helping hands: not always from obligation, but just from good folks beinggood.

America still has communities, of course, but I thinknot quite so much: the proverbial village to raise the child now criticizes themother, and the support systems that used to be in place to help in times ofneed are being decreased due to budget cuts and a desire for privatization.Because money and community have become exchangeable, a lot of groups suffer.Grassroots takes funds to start, community centers need funds for repairs, andit costs to join groups. It’s hard, especially in a time where it seems you can’ttrust your neighbour. Communities are very, very necessary, and having good,strong communities, more so.

Certainly you can find this in Japan, but you canalso find the free support of others.

I think that this is so important to me to rebuild ina similar manner because I like the friendliness of communities. I will admitthat I think millennials –my people, in fact– are onto the kind of communitiesI see here: support networks of people who see you, acknowledge you, and arethere for you. There’s a lot of love, a lot of “no problem” concern abouthelping others when you can, and that shows promise that my work and the workof thousands of others to help bring back community in a supportive, freelygiven sense is being realized.

Community is what we need in hard times, and theseare some pretty hard times. Seeing friendly faces, having people help me moveand make my way through Fukushima City, bolsters my and reminds me to pass onthat bit of kindness. Every bit I get is a sweet morsel: it makes me soft,gives me space to be kind and express kindness. It’s a really great thing thatI feel America just needs to be remindedof again: after all, there’s communities there, they just need to be given asimilar space.

Number Two: Festivals

I love festivals.

Give me a reason to eat some grilled meat andcelebrate something and I’m there, 500 yen coins in hand.

Fukushima City has no shortage either: we’re justaround the corner from the season of festivals, which in the prefecture, seemsto extend from Spring to Early Winter, starting back up in February all again.

Certainly, America has festivals, but they’re almosta folksy thing: they’re rustic, rural and barely suburban events, and if they’renot something national like a parade or a state affair, are usually overlookedoutside of communities in the immediate area.

I want festivals to be mainstream, to be enjoyable,powerful celebrations of cultural heritage and a united place. I want to seefestivals that introduce culture in a way that gives a platform, but also helpsto continue positive change. Rather, I want to see those festivals that alreadyoccur in the vein given a bigger, more national platform.

I feel like I’ve learned a lot from Fukushima Cityjust from festivals: local specialties like shamon chicken from the Chicken Festivalin Kawamata, Fukushima; a strong Argentinean presence and cultural exchangefrom Cosquin en Japon; fighting spirit from Hachiman; respect for those whocame before me and protect me from Obon matsuri. These were really valuemoments that let me have the chance to engage respectfully with a culture, andunderstand a region.

I want there to be more of a festival and culturalcelebration in America, more than there already is. I want to see peoplevividly showcasing “This is me!” to everyone, because I think that willcontinue to bring understanding. I think that without understanding, America isonly going to continue to decline as it is right now.

But all Americans understand festivals, drinks, andfood: I think having a festival culture will allow education under the guise ofgrilled meats, good alcohol, and music.

Fun is a very powerful cure for ignorance: Icertainly found myself learning with every event. I had never considered thatJapanese persons might speak Spanish and perform in Cosquin en Japon’s musicalshowcase. I’d never considered Obon being a celebration and not a solemn event.Those changes of my mind changed me and helped me to understand different partsof Japan. Certainly the country is mostly Japanese people, but they’re notquite as homogenous as we encourage in America. There’s a lot of diversity ofthought and cultural sharing.

That’s super what counts.

Number Three: Food Culture and Sharing

Oh man, I love food. Like, I love food. I’m thinkingabout my lunch bento –I ordered it so I can eat with the librarian and mysupervisor today because they’re my girls and I love them both– and it’s onlylike… 9.

Food is good: it’s necessary, but cleansing, comesfrom hard work or deep friers, feels good, heals good, and makes you want tostrive for good. It’s just good.

So I feel this is best explained through a long, windinganecdote. Here goes.

When I first came, my American manners really stoodout: I wouldn’t eat until everyone got their food, I declined

But I wanted to, desperately: I wanted to sampleevery time someone offered, but it just felt bad. I was paying for only my meal, and these people –not friends,but simple co-workers and more mildly, acquaintances– weren’t. It would havebeen wrong to take a fair portion and still pay my 1000 yen for my meal only.It’s hard to describe why: I think it’s just how I grew up. Strange, because weshare food in mass, but there’s something about the “Mine” culture of Americathat makes it incredibly hard to do otherwise.

It took me months to break this habit of course: I’donly share at events where the food was meant to be shared family style, but Ithink around  December, I finally gave inand said, “Yeah, I wanna taste that!” when someone offered me from their plate.I shared back and realized, yeah, this is okay. I won’t say that I’m a sharingfood now, but I will say that when I last went for Mexican, I share everything fromenchiladas to fajitas, a plate of nachos, some sides: save for my drink, we allshared everything, and just went at the bill in thirds.

I want more food sharing in America like this, notjust with family or at events or family style resturants. I want to be able toshare from each other’s plates and not feel a really strong sense of “Mine!”all the time. Certainly, there’s times where I want that one dish to be mine,but I like that there’s a comfort in sharing food with each other, in tryinglots of different things. It’s friendly and cozy, and definitely something Iwant to invite more Americans to do.

Plus, who doesn’t love eating lots of differentthings?

Number Four: The Art of Getting Lost

I chose to end this lengthy read on this because Ithink that in America, there’s a lack of getting lost for the sake of gettinglost.

We’re a busy culture: even as someone who loved logndrives, it became incredibly hard for me to indulge in grad school. Gas was acost, time was needed elsewhere, and so I cut back on journeying down littlelanes or dirt roads and went directly where I needed to and back to myapartment.

As I sit here, thinking of a train ride to somewhere,I think about the fact that Japanese culture allows for a lot of aimlessexploration via trains and buses. Being a small country, trains and buses arevery efficient, running often enough that unless it’s super late, you canalways get back to a main station or area.

I think there’s a kind of quiet beauty in that: yougo on an adventure to get away, and find your center again and feel mentallyclean. I find that here, I’m encouraged and given space to do that again:explore, get lost in a small town or big city, and come back to what needsdoing refreshed.

I think that there’s a lot of trips in America, butthere’s always stress with them. Mind, I know and recognize that Japanesepeople also stress: not all their trips are Studio Ghibli stereotypes. Sometimestrips are just stressful, even amidst having fun.

But I do think that Japanese culture’s harmony, whena positive attribute and not a way to keep peace over dealing with conflict,can be a really powerful blessing.

I won’t lie and say that I haven’t had a stressfultrip here: my Tokyo trip included the stress of over half a million people atComiket’s venue, which would honestly stress anyone. I will say that I do feellike I can remove myself pretty well and just enjoy, and that’s superimportant. Certainly it’s not perfect here, but I do feel that my more remotetrips force my mind only to the trip, and that’s a great reward.

Perhaps in America, in the rush of things, we steppedaway from that. I think a step back into separating and compartmentalizing ourlives for Fun and Work would be nice. Enjoyment is just as good as Hard Work,after all. I do see a lot of phones checking emails on trips, common in bothAmerican and Japan, but I think trips are just culturally different here, and Iwant them to return back to that same division in the states.

(I want to interject that a lot of this is alsocoming from the privilege of not being Japanese or perceived as ethnicallyAsian. I’m given a lot of leeway because I’m distinctly Foreign Coded, so myexperiences of being able to do unique things and adventure are because I’m notbound to Japanese culture or socio-cultural standards. I can leave work earlyand go to a bathhouse. I can take days off to go on trips to nowhere. My co-workersmay want to do that, but are a lot more bound. I think that’s always important toremember that my privilege as a Cool Foreign comes with the knowledge not tomisuse that and instead, help bridge a friendship between two nations.)

Everything I’m taking back is very cultural: it’sreminding America of how to be kind, of how to enjoy the diversity we have inour nation, of how to respect and celebrate Us. Certainly, I hope to take backways to change the mindset of Japanese persons, ways to celebrate women’sculture and advance the clock on how we perceive Japanese feminism in comparisonto Western displays of feminism. That work’s super important.

But I think remembering who we are –a nation of kindhearts, hard workers, folks who like good food and music, and a nation of opportunityfor all to find their happiness in a powerful, gentle way– is just as importanttoo.

In Feb (2 months ago) I was rear ended at an intersection by a drunk driver. It was 3pm, I was on my way to class, and he hit me out of nowhere. This was his second offense. In my mind I was thinking, I'm gonna go to the left side to let this guy go in, and while that was happening I was worried about the tourists that like to jaywalk and cross the road inbetween cars... So I go to the left and the left and gas it a little bit, I was going like 10 mph as I was taking off, and the light turns yellow, I cross the crosswalk, then the light turns red and I drive under the set of lights.. These 2 bike cops came immediately after me... So long story short, it was my first time being pulled over, I took the seatbelts off, and I ran the red light because there was a guy pulling into a parking stop right in front of me and I was too worried looking around afraid I was going to hit a jaywalking tourists. I know people always think they're right, but I honestly think I didn't do anything wrong here. I got a $25 seat belt fine and a warning for running the red light, which is complete BS. I know it's a warning but I don't want it on my record at all, how can I appeal, any tips?
