Also if you see an item (this goes beyond just clothing) online that you really like - reverse image search the photo before you buy!!! And read reviews!!! Do your research!!!
There are an insane amount of resellers and cheap copy cats out there that will do one of 3 things.
Either the item is drop ship so there's dozens upon dozens of sellers selling the exact same option. This is most common for non apparel goods. However, this does apply for print of demand shirts (usually screen print/graphic tees). There are many print on demand sites (Tee public, redbubble, etc ..) or sites that host third party sellers so it's common to see the exact same (stolen) design pop up on all of them, all from different sellers. If you're bound and determined to buy a print of demand at least do it from Redbubble or tree public because you're most likely going to get a better quality print and apparel item.
Or the "seller" stole the image, recreated a cheap "replica", and is trying to pass it off as the actual item. This is most commonly seen with apparel items. One red flag of this is an item that has a lot of details or materials used to make it but it's extremely cheap to purchase. Sometimes, the item isn't that cheap to purchase and the cost seems acceptable for the product, but the site is a scam and you instead get a cheap knockoff and you lost a good amount of money because they don't accept returns or the site got shutdown after you bought it. A big poofy ball gown with lots of beading is not going to be good quality of it's listed online for $20.
You could also run into the issue where the item is legit and good, but it was a reseller you bought it from who jacked up the price. I've searched the brand I work for on Amazon once and found a listing for a bag that we sell in store. The bag should be exclusive to the brand and costs about $80. The Amazon listing had it at $150 - $200. That's a class reseller move. If anyone just did an image search they'd find the legit listing for a lot cheaper.
By doing a reverse image you can see how often the item shows up in listings and sus out who the true seller is. You'll also be able to look over the sellers to see how legit their business is. It might be a longer shopping process, but that's better than losing money on a shit product and gaining a headache trying to solve the problem after you bought it.
(YouTubers HopeScope and Mia Maples do a lot of videos where they buy clothes from various online retailers to see what they get and how genuine the retailer is. They point out a lot of red flags to look for and will even take recommendations of brands to check out)
i dont consider myself a 'fashion guru' by any means but one thing i will say is guys you dont need to know the specific brand an item you like is - you need to know what the item is called. very rarely does a brand matter, but knowing that pair of pants is called 'cargo' vs 'boot cut' or the names of dress styles is going to help you find clothes you like WAAAYYYY faster than brand shopping
