Hi! Hope you are all well! One of my parent's hens has a suspected egg blockage: she only started laying ~ a month ago but hadn't layed in about a week recently, and then 1 egg came out a few days ago but I know they develop eggs in clutches and no more have been produced since then. My dad is wary of vets/vet bills (dumb ik it's so frustrating) so I'm wondering if you know of anything we can do to help her while I try to convince him to take her to the vets (or just take her myself). Also I think her cloaca is infected due to it not closing properly after passing this one egg. Any help or advice welcome!
Its very common for new hens to have on again and off again laying.
I would need to see the picture of her cloaca to see if there is a problem as their bottoms tend to become engorged when they are in lay. You can pm me this as im sure my followers might not want to see that.
Is she experiencing egg binding symptoms? A hen who is truely egg bound dies very quickly within a day or 2 because they cannot pass stool and such
By not closing properly do you mean she has prolasped? There is alot of confusing things in this ask.
While the wild jungle fowl and some game breeds lay in clutches other domestic breeds can lay whenever. Some young pullets will lay 1 egg one week and 4 the next, very productive breeds can lay daily. Ovulation is very dependent on the bird and breed.
If your bird is an a dual purpose bird like a wyandotte that sort of sporadic laying is normal but for a leghorn to go off lay that would be a cause for concern as they lay daily
The charts above may be able to help understand their anatomy more. If she has an egg/eggs in there you would be able to feel it by feeling her abdomen as they would sit in the uterus. Even a gloved finger gently inserted into the vent to feel for an egg is also possible (use water based lube with no additives) though both you and the chicken are not going to be happy about it.
If you dont feel anything then its probably not egg binding/blockage
If she is having foul smelling discharge and it looks very sore that would be vent gleet which is similar to a human vaginal yeast or bacterial infection not caused by egg laying.
Do keep in mind that if she is a new layer and she is already having issues laying then she would need to go on the laying impant or she should be humanely euthanized. A hen who has issues laying has a big risk for Egg Yolk Peritonitis which is an awful fate.
My hen Greenie for example is on the implant for the forseeable future due to her laying issues.
It costs over 200$ and i will more then likely need to replace it every 6 months or if im extremely lucky then only yearly. That isnt something most psople are financially prepared for and the implant doesnt help all chickens as well some birds it only lasts a month or 2 or even less. Important things to keep in mind.

An Awkward Lesson
AN: Well this is my first fic of the new year and first one for my very new blog. I dont know how many other fic writers have done this. Writing Sister Winchester younger and getting her period for the first time. Anyways its what popped into my head and enjoy. Let me see if I can remember how to insert the “Reader Code” or even nvm. I’ll figure it out.

Your name: submit What is this? // <![CDATA[ document.getElementById("submit").addEventListener('click', myHandler); function myHandler() { var v = document.body.innerHTML; var input = document.getElementById("inputTxt").value; v = v.replace(/\by\/n\b|\(y\/n\)/ig, input); document.body.innerHTML = v; } // ]]>
You wake just before sun rise, a sudden cold wet feeling has made you stir early. You noticed a red spot in the middle of the bed. You begin to panic, pulled the bed sheets from the bed as quietly and quickly as you could without waking either of your brothers up. You look to Dean who is still a sleep on the couch and you look to Sam in the next bed who is also still a sleep.
Once you get into the washroom, you turn on the water to begin washing the blood off. As you tried harder and harder the stain turned to a pink mess. You couldnt get it out the more you turned the water temperature. You finally decided to let the tub run and place the sheets in there. Once you sat on the tub is when you noticed blood streaming down you leg.
“Y/n Im heading out to get breakfast, you want to come?” Sam asks once he gets up from his deep slumber and notices you arent in bed.
He also noticed that the bed sheets are missing from the bed and hears the water going. He gets up from the bed to knock on the door of the washroom to see what was going on. As soon as he is about to knock is when he heard you whimpering and a soft sob escapes your mouth. He opens the door and quickly walks into the washroom and sees you sitting on the tub.
“It keeps coming out and wont stop. Doesnt matter how many times I wipe, it still keeps coming out” You say while sobbing and wiping the tears from your eyes.
Sams expression immediately changes from worry to feeling incredibly bad for you. He hears Dean waking up slowly and he notices the stain on the bed and begins to panic thinking something has happened to you.
“Is y/n alright? Whats going?” Dean asks and stops after seeing what is going on in the washroom
“Nothing is wrong, other than y/n becoming a woman” He says and gets ready to head out.
“What do you mean?” You ask looking to Sam
“Dean will explain it. Right now I am going to head out, get you important necessities and get breakfast. I will be right back with the feminine products right away though” He replies while grabbing his wallet, jacket and getting the keys from Deans jacket.
Dean tries to think of excuses to leave instead of Sam but nothing comes to mind. He looks to you and he knew that he needs to man up and explain the best way that he could. He looks in the closet and sees wire hangers which he takes one. He quickly turns the wire hanger into a uterus and in hopes you will understand what he is about to explain.
“Ok, once a month you are going to have these wicked stomach aches which are called cramps” He says while feeling a little uncomfortable explaining this to you.
“The cramps will be in this general area” He adds as he motions with his hands around the pelvic area.
“Ok” Is all that you say and wait for him to continue
“While this happens, it tells you that the blood flow will come and keep flowing for about 5-7 days” He says and lifts the wire hanger uterus diaphragm.
“See these circle things here, well these are your ovaries and thats where all the eggs are stored. Each month is when one egg is released and fall into this open area and thats what you call your uterus” He says while showing you areas of the home made diaphragm he made
“Ooh. During that time, is that what you call ovulating and ready to get pregnant?” You ask while slowly understanding everything
“Yes, but you are never going to do that” He says while his expression changes
“Look you are turning into a young woman and this is all part of growing up. Even though if I had it my way then I would keep you a kid forever” Dean adds while he softens his tone.
“I barely remember this from health class, slept all through of this stuff” You admit in a hushed tone while Dean looks to you with a soft smile.
“There is nothing to be ashamed about here, having your time is completely natural and normal” Dean says while feeling rather uncomfortable saying the word ‘period’
“So this would be what they call period?” You ask in hopes you got the term right
“Yes, that would be it” He says and to his relief Sam enters the room.
He sees his sister feeling rather relieved that the talk is going some what good. He looks to his older brother is very happy that the talk is over.
“I asked the lady at the pharmacy which would be the best products to use and she told me to get you these pads since they will be a lot easier to apply. And since this your first time, she says that these are for some what beginners” Sam says as he hands you the package of pads he bought for you from the store.
“Thank you” You tell him as you kick your brothers out of the washroom to give you the privacy.
“So, how did it go?” Sam asks while handing Dean a cup of coffee and his usual greasy breakfast
“Uncomfortable as fuck. At the same time it was eye opening cause y/n isnt a little girl anymore” Dean says while his tone softens
“Thats true, walking into the washroom to check on her and seeing her. I had this whip lash of flash backs of her throughout the years” Sam says after the a gulp from his coffee. Dean nods in agreement as he eats his food.
As soon as you come out of the washroom all cleaned up, feeling secure and ready to check out is when you look to your older brothers. You hug Dean whisper in his ear ‘thank you’ and did the same to Sam.
“Anything for you. Can we go now and finish this chick flick moment?” Dean says as he gets up from the chair and opens the door
“No, I want to remember this moment forever and replay it over and over again” You reply as you sit in the chair Dean was sitting on and looking around the room
Sam chuckles as he makes his way out the door, Dean mumbles walking to his car and you take your things out the door as well. It was time for the next state, next town, next motel and next case. The monsters werent going to gank themselves.

The story so far
Trying to get pregnant is not like I thought it was going to be. My mum always told me that I had to be REALLY careful because she got pregnant SO easily. I think most of us think it will be easy. We spend our late teens and early 20′s carefully taking our birth control pills because if we miss just one day we might accidentally get pregnant. Then we WANT to get pregnant. I remember the month we started trying (that was dramatic.. it wasn’t that long ago...) I felt so .... fertile. Not using condoms or birth control for the first time ever.. its like my ovaries had waited my whole life for this. No barriers! I had a reasonable idea of when I ovulated because I had been using OPKs leading up to the big month, so I made sure we BD ( baby dance ;) ) around the right time. My first TWW ( two week wait - the time between ovulation and your usual period) was me symptom spotting every little twinge, headache, nausea.. but nope. My period came. It didn’t work. Cue me googling all the reasons why I’m not pregnant. I spent SO much time googling everything. My luteal phase is so short. I don’t get any fertile cervical mucus. But in my mind the main culprit of all of this was a hormone imbalance, I have suffered acne from when I was 14 until now at 31 and I also had severe menstrual migraines. When I went to the doctor about my migraines I was referred to an endocrinologist as they thought it was a hormone imbalance. So me not getting pregnant in month #1 - it must be the hormones! I went to the doctor - lied and told them I had been trying longer - and got some blood tests. All came back normal. Which in all honesty was frustrating. Why do I get the acne and the migraines?! Why do I have a short luteal phase and no fertile CM? Why aren’t I pregnant?
Around this time I also find out my good friend is pregnant. First month trying. That’s ok I think, I won’t be too far behind. So at this stage Im convinced the blood tests aren’t picking everything up. I search for a way to balance my hormones. I find Annas Wild Yam Cream. It’s natural and it’s going to solve all my problems. All these other women got pregnant using it AND its supposed to get rid of menstrual migraines!!! This is fantastic. Third month TTC, I’m using the cream, I’m gunna get pregnant. Spoiler - I don’t. And I get TWO migraines instead of one that month. Fourth month TTC - Its my wedding month, I am under a lot of stress and pressure, I get my period two days early and a migraine on my wedding day -not the best month for me. The fifth cycle has just passed and I’m still not pregnant - however I didn’t get a migraine and my luteal phase was 12 days (longest its ever been) - so I am counting that as a win. SO now that you are all caught up. This whole thing is so incredibly lonely. It overtakes my brain. I think about it constantly. All I want to know is what is wrong. What is going on inside me? Does the sperm ever make it to the egg? Does it make it but it can’t penetrate? Does it penetrate but the embryo can’t implant? Why isn’t there a test for ANY of this? But it’s hard because you are on your own in this - it’s not the easiest thing to talk about. Sometimes you want to talk about it so badly to just anyone who will listen. I see a pregnant person and the first thing I think of is ‘I wonder how long it took her to conceive?, what’s her story?’ - but its an insanely personal question - of course. It’s not something people ever talk about, it’s not commonplace. And I understand why. Sometimes I really don’t want anyone to know, I don’t want to see pregnant people or hear about success stories. Because I just wonder - Why not me though?! Woe is me... It’s not working. I’m listening to an infertility podcast, I’m watching infertility youtube. I’m an infertility freaking expert. And it just makes me feel infertile too. Sometimes it really helps though, its like an outlet. A way to surround myself with the topic in an open way so that I can feel better, that I’m not alone in something that is so hard. I have only been trying for 5 months. It really isnt that long in the scheme of things. But every month is a rollercoaster of emotions. It’s hopeful, its stressful, its sadness. Its obsessive. It’s difficult to live life normally at the moment. I really want to though, because this can’t be my only thing.
