[ ID: A chart with two columns and 9 rows colored in shades of white, blue, purple, and green. The chart assigns a rating number and provides a description for each rating. The text in the chart reads: “Rating - Description 0 - Exclusively OTP only Do Not Separate 1 - Predominantly OTP only, only incidentally multishipper 2 - Predominantly OTP only, but more than incidentally multishipper 3 - Equally OTP only and multishipper 4 - Predominantly multishipper, but more than incidentally OTP only 5 - Predominantly multishipper, only incidentally OTP only 6 - Exclusively multishipper X - Not a shipper” End ID.]
there should be a kinsey scale for whether you're a multishipper or a staunch OTP only Do Not Separate kind of shipper bc at least for me it varies so wildly from fandom to fandom
#im probably a 3#like i have my pairings and those are my pairings those are what make my blood sing#but im never against other pairings really. if its just one of my dudes with someone else thats fine ill read it#i even write for other pairings#as long as the pairing isnt like canonically deeply toxic im probably fine with it#i dont tend to write for other pairings for myself though. if im doing it its probably for a friend#as it stands ive really only been writing for one pairing in the past year or so. ive got three unpublished stories for them#but im continuing old stories for other pairings without issue#kinsey scale of multishipping#in short im just not an anti let people live#i should also add that im like this for all fandoms. i only write for haikyuu but i think of all fandoms this way#a good character should be shippable with anyone even if that person is not my favorite person for the character#fun fact: you dont have to separate your otp if you just make them platonic best friends when writing a different pairing~#the true secret to my success: platonic soulmates#lol#equally otp only and multishipper#if not a 3 i would lean towards 2 i think#otps are comfort characters to me theyre who i fall back to when i have a bad day and want to see fluff#or angst. its a coin flip#fandom#multishipper#multishipping#scale#almost hit rb then realized theres no id caption so i added one#as always im new to this id thing so please be gentle with me#im open to corrections and recommendations on how to improve though

(Un)Broken - part 1
Author’s note: Hey guys! I’m finally back with the next story in my college AU. I recommend at least reading one of its predecessors, Dazed, before this story. Otherwise you might be confused.
Fandom: Absolutely not a Surprise! It’s Sanders Sides!
Warnings (for this part): doctor visit, talk of injuries (including a head injury and broken arm), medication mention, headaches
Word count: 1254
(Un)Broken Masterpost!
Writing masterpost!
...
March, 2018
“So, Logan, how have your headaches been?”
Logan glanced around the room, with its pale gray walls and aquatic animal themed art. He was sitting on the examination table across from the doctor, tapping his fingers against his leg. He hated medical appointments, but they had been necessarily frequent as of late. It had only been a few weeks since a regrettable and unfortunately infamous incident in which he took a fall down one of the staircases at his college campus. He had come away from it with a concussion, a broken arm, and several bruised ribs.
“About the same,” he admitted after a moment.
“Do you have one now?”
“I do.”
“How would you rate it on a scale from one to ten, one being hardly any pain, and ten being the worst pain imaginable?”
Logan considered. “…Three,” he said. “Four, perhaps.”
The doctor frowned. “Only a four? You’re wearing a baseball cap indoors.”
“My headaches are accompanied by light sensitivity, as you know. This helps to avoid that.”
The doctor glanced up at the lights, which had already been dimmed. Logan set his jaw, disliking the way the doctor had chosen to convey his point.
“I rated the pain at a four because that is what I consider it. You stated that a ten is “the worst pain imaginable”. That is quite a lot of pain. My headache is far from that.”
The doctor nodded, typing something in the computer. “Is the medication I prescribed helping?”
“It’s hard to say just yet, but I believe so.”
He nodded again, typing something else. “Would you like to increase the dose? We can add another ten milligrams if you’d like.”
“I would rather not. I don’t want to become dependent.”
“I respect that.” He turned to face Logan fully, clasping his hands together. He regarded his patient seriously. ‘Although, Mr. Foley, I have to ask—have you considered that these migraines may not be temporary?”
Logan frowned. He had; of course, he had. How could the thought have not occurred to him? He simply had not wanted to consider it as a serious possibility. That denial—he supposed there was no other word for it but denial—seemed to be being put to an end.
“Is there nothing else you can do for me?” he finally asked, his voice slow and careful.
“Head injuries are tricky. There’s a limit to what we can do. It might have helped, had you sought medical attention sooner, but… we can’t change that now.”
Logan gritted his teeth, looking away.
“I’m not trying to criticize. I don’t see the point, especially when it is about something we cannot change.”
Whether criticism was worthwhile here or not, the physician was correct. The delay in Logan’s treatment had greatly affected his recovery, and it was all his own fault. He never should have refused to see a doctor, and he shouldn’t have lied to his friends about hitting his head in the first place. He knew that he had only made things worse for himself, and that he had terrified his friends in the process. Logan could argue that he hadn’t been himself at the time, that he hadn’t been thinking clearly, and while that had probably contributed to his poor decision-making at the time, the inflexible stubbornness of his actions had been all Logan.
“What we can control is how you deal with these headaches.”
“Hm.”
“Should your migraines prove to be a chronic condition, we can work together to figure out a balance of lifestyle changes and medication that works for you to properly manage them. Things like a consistent, healthy sleep schedule, taking frequent breaks from difficult task, and other methods of avoiding triggers and minimizing the duration of your headaches may really help you.”
Logan sighed, looking down at his hands where they sat in his lap. One was partially hidden by the bulky blue cast encasing his right forearm. The watch he usually wore on that wrist was now on his left.
“Would it be acceptable to put this discussion off until our next appointment?” he asked even though he knew that there was still plenty of time left in the appointment slot. “I would prefer to wait and see if there is any more improvement by then.”
The doctor regarded him for a moment before nodding. “In that case, let’s move on. What about your ribs? Are they still giving you trouble?”
“No, they seem much improved. The bruises faded approximately a week ago, and while I do still notice some tenderness, it is only when I have inadvertently bumped or applied pressure to them.”
“So, they are healing well?” the doctor clarified.
“Yes.”
“Excellent. As for your arm, I still believe that we should wait another week to remove the cast. At that point you will receive a removable splint.” He glanced at the clock above Logan’s head. “We can talk more about that when the time comes.”
“Is that all, then?”
“If you have nothing else to discuss.”
Logan affirmed that he had nothing else to say, gathered his phone, water bottle, and jacket, and left the office.
As he drove home, Logan couldn’t help but think about what the doctor had said. He really didn’t like to think about the fact that while his arm and ribs would heal, he might never be rid of these headaches.
To think that a split-second—a broken backpack clasp, a hurried step, a bit of rainwater on a staircase—could cause such a permanent change in his life… it was awful. The thought that he might have what amounted to permanent brain damage, as someone who valued his mind above all else, was rather terrifying.
What if I’m never as smart as I was? he couldn’t help but think. Would I even know?
Logan squeezed the steering wheel tightly with his left hand and kept driving, determined to shift his focus to the task at hand. It wouldn’t do to drive distracted. He couldn’t afford to be in a traffic accident, could he? Not on top of everything else.
Logan huffed bitterly.
He supposed he should count himself lucky. His head injury really hadn’t been that bad, not compared to what it could have been. His fractured arm would be out of a cast very soon, and his ribs had been only bruised. He should be grateful that he hadn’t been hurt worse, and that his friends had cared enough to try to force him to the hospital, although it hadn’t been until that forgotten night in the park that they had succeeded.
Logan pulled into a space in front of his apartment building and turned off the engine. He sat there for a moment in silence before adjusting his sunglasses and opening the door. He walked quickly inside, wanting to be in the bright sunlight as briefly as possible.
He shut himself in the apartment and put away his school materials. His appointment had been scheduled close to when his classes had ended that day, so he hadn’t gotten the chance to come home beforehand. Now, he took off his shoes and hat and lay down on the couch, covering his eyes with his arm. He and his friends were meeting that evening, as they often did, but Logan had time for a nap first. It might help to assuage his headache pain, he reasoned. That way he at least had a chance at enjoying himself that afternoon. Time would tell.

hey i have 5 goldfish in a 55 gallon tank and have been working on splitting them into seperate tanks because ive been told its too small and im worried about them. but i notice you have that many? i wondered if you could tell me how much filtration you have? i am wondering if maybe mine will be ok if I make sure my filters are big enough. they are comparable in size to yours, i really just have the one larger and the rest p small. thank you sm if u answer this ♡
I want to start out by saying that the footprint of a 55g is going to be too small for 5 fancy goldfish when they’re fully grown. With proper filtration and water change schedule, there’s no reason that you can’t keep that many in a 55g as a grow out tank. I wouldn’t keep more than four fancies in a 55g long term if you have no plans to upgrade. I actually have six young goldfish in my 55g (2 orandas, 3 faintails, and a ryukin). None are above three inches in body length. I do not plan to keep them in a 55g for life, that was never my intention actually as I hate the dimensions of 55g (but it’s the largest size aquarium I can fit on my dresser) but that’s a bit off topic.
In the spring I’m going to move /all/ of my indoor goldfish to my pond and redo the 55g completely. I’m currently looking for a large corner bowfront tank (100-150g) to house my fancy goldfish in when I move, but corner tanks are few and far between unfortunately. (I just think a corner goldfish tank would be adorable in a bedroom haha) ANYWAY I’m rambling
This is the filtration I currently have on my goldfish tank, I do weekly 25-50% water changes, though it’s not entirely necessary for me to do them that often. I just am in the habit and it relieves stress.
Fluval 306 Canister
1x Aqueon 75g HOB filter (modified, no carbon, added purigen, added filter pad)
1x Aqueon 75g HOB filter (modified, full of matrix, filter floss, and filter pad)
The filter combination that I have on my tank have a combined rating for 250g, and turns over the water at a rate of (roughly) 1000gph.
So to summarize: Yes, it’s okay to keep five young goldfish in a 55g- it can be difficult to get the correct filter flow, capacity, and gph rating if you’re not confident though, which can lead to ammonia / nitrate levels spiking. It’s not something I would recommend a beginner attempt long term. Once the goldfish reach about 4″ in body length I would recommend either upgrading them to a larger tank (a 90g would be perfect!) or do what you said and divide them between two 55gs or 40gbs (whatever you prefer dimensions / space-wise).
There are a lot of.. “rules”, for lack of a better word , that (fishblr) treats as absolute when that’s not necessarily the case to be honest. I had someone once tell me to not keep more than 2 goldfish in a 200g pond because (at the time) “everyone knew that a goldfish needs 100g per fish!!!” so like.. don’t let it get you down. Just take care of your fish the best you can and keep improving your husbandry as you learn more. It’s obvious you care a lot about your fish and are willing to learn by reaching out to me, and as long as you continue to keep an open mind to new info your fish will thrive! :>

Honestly, your post about GG is 👌. GG, esp Danny, are some of the most understanding and respectful youtubers I watch that aren't LGBT themselves. Like Danny himself is always like "I'm old so correct me if I'm wrong..." and if he is he apologizes!! Same w Arin and the rest of the gang. Like they really do try to improve and be more understanding as the world develops. I love watching them to see how they learn more about the world and become more inclusive and educated. I love them
if i remember correctly, suzy is openly bisexual, arin has no sexual preference, and danny has proclaimed that he is flexible assuming he found another man he liked enough to want to be with
and those three are just the three that im aware of their sexual preferences
the times of them being offensive was from around the time when we were all making horribly offensive jokes, 2009-2013 was a really
awkward
time for internet culture
and we all made horrible jokes at one point but we learn and grow and become more aware of those around us. you cant demonize someone for making jokes if they themselves are genuinely tolerant of the people around them. we don’t have bad morals when we’re making those jokes, we’re just going with what everyone seems to think is funny at the time. a few months from now, i can assure you that theres going to be something brand new for people to be offended at when it was something that everyone used to do.
its just how ‘progressive’ internet culture works.
the grumps team are open minded and kindhearted people. they want to bring us entertainment. they don’t care about the views or whatever youtube income they get (which isnt a lot considering the current state of youtube) because theyre just doing what they love with the people they care about.
they havent become lethargic about their work and popularity like some youtubers (coughcoughpewdiepiecoughcough), they just have a fun time regardless of their situation.
arin created gamegrumps when he noticed the youtube algorithm shifting from animation to video games. now he plays games daily while protesting that artists should get a fair chance to show their animations and artwork on youtube without being dumped down to the bottom of the recommendations. ross shares that sentiment as well, as he is an animator that developed alongside arin. he’s actually way more vocal about it as well.
these are incredible people who just want to make you smile when you’re feeling down. demonizing them for past content when they’ve learned and grown just like we have is incredibly small minded and people who chastise them are clearly insecure about people finding out about their own pasts and the horrible things they’ve said or done.
yeah, i’ll admit it, when i was 10 to 14 i made rape jokes, gay jokes, trans jokes, racist jokes; but i’m grown now. i’m 21 now, and i am much more aware of the people around me, the struggles they go through. i’ve come to terms with my own sexuality and gender identity and i’m willing to see new things of the sort. i have had friends of all races and i realized that i shouldn’t make those kinds of jokes. i wouldnt like it if people commented on my straight hair or my pasty white skin and didnt stop if i asked.
we all do stupid stuff. to act as though we’re holier than thou is disgusting and you just want to believe you never did anything offensive in your life. but you’re not a saint. you’re human and you make mistakes. you can be ashamed of your past, but you can’t tear someone a new one who you went back to content they put up in 2012 and found they made an offensive comment and then come here in 2017 when they’re a completely different person and try to demonize them and defame them.
youre clearly just a coward if you do that, you have no real evidence to back yourself up and you should be ashamed of your behavior now as well as your behavior in the past.

Anaconda, Andrew Bogut, and Apparently: FULL OF SMILES, TAIL WAGS AND WARM ENERGY Ruby Ul A Burst of Sweet Sunshine #32264, Spayed, 3 1/2 years old and 53 adorable lbs Waiting for her hero@Manhattan ACC TO BE KILLED 1/29/2019 ABSOLUTELY LOVELY – SHE IS A BURST OF SWEET SUNSHINE!! A volunteer writes: Ruby is one of the happiest dogs I've ever met. Full of smiles, tail wags, and warm energy, she gained so many smiles back from passersby as we walked together in the park. Ruby was engaged with me, and interested in all the smells around her, as well. She turned to me expectantly each time I called her name. This sweet 3-year old loves treats -- one of life's simple pleasures -- and knows exactly how to sit for a yummy biscuit. She seems housebroken. Ruby's coat is mostly caramel colored and looks quite healthy. She enjoyed soft pats on her marshmallow-white chest while we sat on a bench. Do you need a burst of sweet sunshine in canine form? Ruby might be the girl to dazzle you! Come and meet her today at the Manhattan Care Center! Another volunteer writes: "She is a girl full of surprises! Shy on the one hand and amazingly playful on the other. This is our Ruby, an adorable orange little gal we house at the Manhattan Care Center. Ruby yearns to please and to belong but yes, she needs a little push to spring out of her shell! She obediently comes when called, hops on the bench, seeks caresses, attention and furtively kisses her caretaker. When we least expect, she zooms through the yard and even takes us aback by playing with toys. Imagine what a lovely pet she will be in the warmth of your home and in your loving hands! Ruby has been fearful in the care center and has displayed distance increasing behaviors, and has shown sensitivities to touch. Ruby would be best suited for a new hope partner that can offer behavior modification in a low stress environment. Medically, Ruby appears healthy. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR - Date of initial:12-Jan-2019 Summary:Growled, no teeth, muzzled and sedated ENERGY LEVEL: Because Boogie is a stray, we are not sure how her energy level will be in a home environment. At the care center, Boogie has shown a medium energy level. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: 1/14/19: Boogie has opened up with handlers at the care center, approaching socially and becoming playful. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: Due to Ruby's bite history, we recommend an adult only home. Though Ruby has displayed social behavior in the care center upon warming up to handlers, she displayed fearful behavior in the beginning. Upon intake, she allowed minimal handling and displayed high level warning signals. She has since warmed up and improved significantly and has readily allowed all handling, however, due to the behavior on intake combined with her bite history we believe being placed with a New Hope partner would be most appropriate at this time. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Ruby to new and unfamiliar situations. Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human) Potential challenges comments:: Ruby has shown some sensitivity when her paws have been touched or handled. Please see sensitivity handout on how best to manage this behavior Ruby has been fearful at the care center and in some interactions has growled. The potential challenges could include no young children, prefers to be the only dog, no dog parks, no cats, kennel presence, basic manners, low level fear and mild anxiety. Level 2 Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience. They will have displayed behavior in the shelter (or have owner reported behavior) that requires some training, or is simply not suitable for an adopter with minimal experience. Dogs with a Level 2 determination may have multiple potential challenges and these may be presenting at differing levels of intensity, so careful consideration of the behavior notes will be required for counselling. Potential challenges at Level 2 include no young children, single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity, mouthiness, fear with potential for escalation, impulse control/arousal, anxiety and separation anxiety. Level 3 Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters, and the ACC strongly suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment. In many cases, a trainer will be needed to manage and work on the behaviors safely in a home environment. It is likely that every dog with a Level 3 determination will have a behavior modification or training plan available to them from the behavior department that will go home with the adopters and be made available to the New Hope Partners for their fosters and adopters. Some of the challenges seen at Level 3 are also seen at Level 1 and Level 2, but when seen alongside a Level 3 determination can be assumed to be more severe. The potential challenges for Level 3 determinations include adult only home (no children under the age of 13), single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity with potential for redirection, mouthiness with pressure, potential escalation to threatening behavior, impulse control, arousal, anxiety, separation anxiety, bite history (human), bite history (dog) and bite history (other). New Hope Rescue Only Dog is not publicly adoptable. Prospective fosters or adopters need to fill out applications with New Hope Partner Rescues to save this dog.

(First off I dropped the ball and because I was so tired I accidentally deleted the ask. The good news is I took a screenshot earlier to show a friend so she could translate it for me in my moment of stupid. Sorry about that.)
Tumblr media
How to let go of an RP Partner
RPers are people. And it’s a fact of life that no matter how close you are to someone, eventually things are going to change. Sometimes they get bored, sometimes they lose the muse, sometimes the relationship conditions change between partners, sometimes people get married, have kids, find a job, and just move on from the RPing scene. Fuck man, some of my past RP friends passed away for various reasons. This is usually why I tell people not to take their partners for granted. Someday it’s going to end and you’ll at least want to end it on the best note possible. In your case, however, it doesn’t sound like you’re going to get that anymore if you keep pestering them. To be frank, you’re going to make them regret their decision if you keep pushing them into RPing with you.
But there’s good news in all of this. Things aren’t entirely hopeless for you or anyone who really wants things to change for the better. Assuming you’re a rational adult that’s just stuck in a really distressing situation, here’s usually the things I tell people to do.
1.) Recognize where it went wrong. And really, really think about this one. In your case, do you feel like utter shit for what you did to your friend? Do you regret hurting them? Good. Yeah, I know, that’s a bitchy thing to say, But it’s the truth. Feeling like this is a critical step to understanding your faults and making a real change. If you want things to get better in the future, you can’t fall for the same mistakes you made before. You have to be willing to listen and take criticism better if you want to hope for any relief. Not everyone ends on a bitter note, though. Maybe they just don’t feel the character anymore or their situation changed, and that’s perfectly okay. It’s RPing. You shouldn’t need a grand excuse to not play along. Your friend most likely doesn’t hate you. If she was kind enough to offer forgiveness after an apology, chances are she wants to let go just as much as you. But she may just need some space to heal and manage on her own. This is a critical time for RPers who have had particularly jarring instances like this. Please try to understand that sometimes the best thing you can do is nothing at all. The damage is done and unfortunately, you can’t take it back.
2.) Show you respect their decision to be left alone and work to detach yourself. When we’re particularly close to an RP partner or group, we find it hard to move on and write on our own accord. You may have headcanons, memories, personal work, even entire characters that revolve around the other. After some time, it becomes harder and harder to let go. This is the point where I usually recommend people start cleaning up. Take some time to tear things down and build yourself back up. If you have head canons that revolve around that person, try to adjust it so the character stands on their own. Your character is still a character even if they were made to know the other. They’re still entirely capable of being their own unique individual. Do you have any art or original work from the other person featured on your blog? Store it all away in a file on your computer (preferably a separate flashdrive) and try to remove what you can on your blog. Stow it away in a place where you won’t instantly run into it the moment you sit on your computer or open your files. Try taking some time to look at your blog and characters and see if it’s unique to you and you alone. Whatever you do, don’t post any more of the other person’s material from here on out. This will only cause more strife in the future. Nobody will blame you for using face claims, youtube playlists, or anything instant access if it means saving your mental health.
But Clara! Why would I save these things if they make me feel so awful? Isn’t that kind of creepy and masochistic?
Well, that depends. Of course, not all memories are worth saving. If there are things you feel are personal attacks to your character, such as call out posts, public statements, or anything you feel is humiliating to your self esteem or the other person in question, it’s best to leave these things in the trash. It’s also not healthy to constantly look back and post about it, lest you turn your RP blog into a stalker’s shrine. However, there’s a positive kind of emotional pain, one that typically comes with grief. Speaking from personal experience and watching people go through the same mess, it usually takes about a month to three months to really feel the effects of recovery after having to lose an RP partner. But time depends on your relationship with the other, how close you were with them, and how the relationship ended. When done on a healthy level, it’s okay to recall where you and your muse learned how to become better people together. There’s no shame in acknowledging your mistakes in the past so long as your present self understands this and is willing to learn from it. It’s okay to feel sad, hurt, or lonely. Even if people dismiss it as just a game, RPing can become very personal between people.
Cutting off people entirely is something I only suggest as a last resort in order to protect yourself and people around you. Doing this will not ease the grief process. If anything, it proves to make things far more complicated and difficult. Once you start, it’s something that’s very difficult to take back. I only suggest doing this if you feel the following:
- You have been emotionally, mentally, physically, or sexually exploited by your last RP partner.
- You feel that this person will try to reach out to you outside of the internet.
- You feel this person puts yourself and everyone around you at risk both physically and emotionally.
- This person admits to actively participating in harmful and/or illegal activities that could get you hurt as a result.
- This person is blackmailing you and threatens to publicly release this private information unless you comply to their demands.
3.) Reach out to new RPers. This is a very scary step for a lot of people, especially if you don’t find yourself very good at socializing and just went through a time where you got a good look at the worst in yourself. But take comfort in knowing that if you realize where you dropped the ball in the last relationship and took steps to improve, you’re better than ever. And if you made a friendship that memorable as your past self, why can’t you do it again? Often times we feel we need to put up a front in order to meet new people and appeal to a certain audience. However, nothing is more personal and intimate than sharing your writing, art, or ideas with other people. It’s important to be honest with the other person and yourself before you can establish any sort of genuine connection.
It’s okay to message or IM someone asking for an RP. Be upfront, but not bossy. Ask if it’s okay with them to give the idea a shot. Listen to what the other has to say. If you see any streaming events or discord chat rooms, try to join in and introduce yourself politely while also asking for names. Know that very rarely do opportunities simply fall on your lap conveniently and that a majority of RPers are self admitted dorks who just want to have fun, too. Whatever you do, though, don’t start clinging to these RPers for emotional support on the first day. This can be emotionally exhausting and put a ton of unnecessary pressure on another. You must also learn how to manage on your own.
4.) Never forget that as bad as it gets, it’s not the end. Let me tell you a story. My last RP group went to shit really fast. People didn’t trust one another, a whole group became divided, and because the game didn’t allow an equal balance between high experience and new RPers, it wasn’t rare for people to start abusing their power, making it nearly impossible for more timid and new players to start joining. Since I was new, it was incredibly frustrating to play the game. Add to the fact that a lot of these guys were red blooded authors (some of whom already published or are working on books), it wasn’t very welcoming to someone who was young and mostly dicked around in private IM RPs. Needless to say, I was way out of my league. Rules were broken or bent, and I became so frustrated with people stopping and correcting me every step of the way but ignoring their own rules as the game moved on. RPing made me severely anxious, and I’ve had my OCs verbally ripped to shreds right in front of my eyes. I hated going online and my self esteem and overall mental and physical health plummeted to levels I didn’t think were possible. I won’t act like I’m a victim, though. Because I was angry I did things to intentionally hurt other people. I lashed out a lot, and chances are I did more damage than was necessary even considering what had happened at the time. So those same group of people. Where are they now?
We chill out, talk about cartoons, and gush about our OCs or favorite characters.
Yeah. After all the shitty things that happened, we managed to get along again, though this time I avoid the game itself and just RP freestyle. So what does this mean for you? It means that relationships are bound to change, but just because someone doesn’t want to RP anymore doesn’t also mean time can’t make a big impact. Maybe you’ll learn to stand on your own two feet having met new RPers and friends, maybe you and your partner wouldn’t mind at least being on friendlier terms again. It’s hard to say what will happen in the future, but you must always remember you are never defined by your past. What matters is did you learn anything from your mistake and how you decide to act on your newfound wisdom.

Covid-19 diagnostic based on MIT technology might be tested on patient samples soon
As more Covid-19 cases appear in the United States and around the world, the need for fast, easy-to-use diagnostic tests is becoming ever more pressing. A startup company spun out from MIT is now working on a paper-based test that can deliver results in under half an hour, based on technology developed at MIT’s Institute for Medical Engineering and Science (IMES).
Cambridge-based E25Bio, which developed the test, is now preparing to submit it to the FDA for “emergency use authorization,” which would grant temporary approval for using the device on patient samples during public health emergencies.
Elsewhere around MIT, several other research groups are working on projects that may help further scientists’ understanding of how coronaviruses are transmitted and how infection may be prevented. Their work touches on fields ranging from diagnostics and vaccine development to more traditional disease prevention measures such as social distancing and handwashing.
Faster diagnosis
The technology behind the new E25Bio diagnostic was developed by Lee Gehrke, the Hermann L.F. von Helmholtz Professor at IMES, and other members of his lab, including Irene Bosch, a former IMES research scientist who is now the CTO of E25Bio.
For the past several years, Gehrke, Bosch, and others in the lab have been working on diagnostic devices that work similar to a pregnancy test but can identify viral proteins from patient samples. The researchers have used this technology, known as lateral flow technology, to create tests for Ebola, dengue fever, and Zika virus, among other infectious diseases.
The tests consist of strips of paper that are coated with antibodies that bind to a specific viral protein. A second antibody is attached to gold nanoparticles, and the patient’s sample is added to a solution of those particles. The test strip is then dipped in this solution. If the viral protein is present, it attaches to the antibodies on the paper strip as well as the nanoparticle-bound antibodies, and a colored spot appears on the strip within 20 minutes.
Currently, there are two primary types of Covid-19 diagnostics available. One such test screens patient blood samples for antibodies against the virus. However, antibodies are often not detectable until a few days after symptoms begin. Another type of test looks for viral DNA in a sputum sample. These tests can detect the virus earlier in the infection, but they require polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a technology that amplifies the amount of DNA to detectable levels and takes several hours to perform.
“Our hope is that, similar to other tests that we’ve developed, this will be usable on the day that symptoms develop,” Gehrke says. “We don’t have to wait for antibodies to the virus to come up.”
If the U.S. Food and Drug Administration grants the emergency authorization, E25Bio could start testing the diagnostic with patient samples, which they haven’t been able to do yet. “If those are successful, then the next step would be to talk about using it for actual clinical diagnosis,” Gehrke says.
Another advantage of this approach is that the paper tests can be easily and inexpensively manufactured in large quantities, he adds.
RNA vaccines
On Feb. 24, only about a month after the first U.S. case of coronavirus was reported, the Cambridge-based biotech company Moderna announced it had an experimental vaccine ready to test. That speedy turnaround is due to the unique advantages of RNA vaccines, says Daniel Anderson, an MIT professor of chemical engineering, who also works on such vaccines, though not specifically for coronavirus.
“A key advantage of messenger RNA is the speed with which you can identify a new sequence and use it to come up with a new vaccine,” Anderson says.
Traditional vaccines consist of an inactivated form of a viral protein that induces an immune response. However, these vaccines usually take a long time to manufacture, and for some diseases, they are too risky. Vaccines that consist of messenger RNA are an appealing alternative because they induce host cells to produce many copies of the proteins they encode, provoking a stronger immune response than proteins delivered on their own.
RNA vaccines can also be quickly reprogrammed to target different viral proteins, as long as the sequence encoding the protein is known. The main obstacle to developing such vaccines so far has been finding effective and safe ways to deliver them. Anderson’s lab has been working on such strategies for several years, and in a recent study he showed that packing such vaccines into a special type of lipid nanoparticles can enhance the immune response that they produce.
“Messenger RNA can encode the viral antigens, but in order to work, we need to find a way to deliver these antigens to the correct part of the body so that they get expressed and generate an immune response. We also need to make sure that the vaccine causes appropriate immune stimulation to get a strong response,” Anderson says.
Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), has estimated that it will take at least 12 to 18 months to fully test any potential Covid-19 vaccine for safety and effectiveness.
Keep your distance
Over the last decade, Lydia Bourouiba, an associate professor directing the Fluid Dynamics of Disease Transmission Laboratory at MIT, has focused on characterizing and modeling infectious disease dynamics and transmission at various scales. Through experiments in the lab and clinical environment, she has reported that when a person coughs or sneezes, they do not emit a spray of individual droplets that quickly fall to the ground and evaporate, as scientists had once thought. Instead, they produce a complex cloud of hot and moist air that trap droplets of all sizes together, propelling them much further through the air than any individual droplet would travel on its own.
On average, her experiments have revealed that a cough can transmit droplets up to 13 to 16 feet, while a sneeze can eject them up to 26 feet away. Surrounding air conditions can act to further disperse the residual droplets in upper levels of rooms.
Bourouiba notes that the presence of the high-speed gas cloud is independent of the type of organism or pathogen that the cloud may contain. The droplets within it depend on a pathogen’s properties, coupled with a patient’s physiology — a combination which her laboratory has focused on deciphering in the context of influenza. She is now expanding her studies and modeling to Covid-19, and says now is a critical time to invest in research.
“This virus is going to stay with us for a while — and certainly data suggest that it is not going to suddenly disappear when the weather changes,” she says. “There’s a fine and important balance between safety, precautions and action that is important to strike to enable and dramatically accelerate research to be done now so we can be better prepared and informed for actions in the weeks and months to come when the worst of the pandemic will unfold.”
She is also working with others to evaluate ways to limit a cloud’s dispersal and slow Covid-19 transmission to health care workers and others in shared spaces. “A surgical mask is not protective against inhalation of a pathogen from the cloud,” she says. “For an infected patient wearing it, it can contain some of the forward ejecta from coughs or sneezes, but these are very violent ejections completely open on all sides, and fluid flows through the path of least resistance.”
Based on the data, she recommends that health care workers consider wearing a respirator, whenever possible. And, for the general public, Bourouiba emphasizes that the risk of contracting COVID-19 remains relatively low locally, and that risk should be thought of in the context of the community.
Wash those hands
Another good way to protect yourself against all of those tiny infectious droplets is to wash your hands. (Again, and again, and again.)
Ruben Juanes, an MIT professor of civil and environmental engineering, and of earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences, published a study in December showing the importance of improving rates of handwashing at key airports in order to curtail the spread of an epidemic. Now, he says, following the Covid-19 outbreak, governments around the world have imposed unprecedented restrictions on mobility, including the closure of airports and suspension of flight routes.
At the same time, the World Health Organization, U.S. Centers for Disease Control, and many other health agencies all recommend hand-hygiene as the number one precaution measure against disease spread. “Following our recent paper on the impact of hand-hygiene on global disease spreading,” Juanes says, “we are now investigating the combined effect of restrictions on human mobility and enhanced engagement with hand-hygiene on the global spread of COVID-19 through the world air-transportation network.”
Juanes says he and Christos Nicolaides PhD ’14, a professor at the University of Cyprus who was the lead author of the previous study, are working “with fine-grained, worldwide air-traffic data that accounts for all flights for the period between Jan. 15, 2020 until today (accounting for closures/cancellations) and the corresponding period of 2019 (base level) to elucidate the role of travel restrictions on the global spread of Covid-19 through detailed epidemiological modeling.”
“Furthermore,” he adds, “we simulate different hand-hygiene strategies at airports on top of travel restrictions with the goal of proposing an optimal strategy that combines travel restrictions and enhanced hand hygiene, to mitigate the advance of Covid-19 both in the short term (weeks) and the long term (the next flu season).”
Juanes says they will make the results immediately available via medarXiv, while the work follows peer-review in a journal. This would also allow the information to reach other academic and government institutions in a more timely way, he says.

Questions About HELOCs, Vegetables, Old Papers, Scams, and More!
Whats inside? Here are the questions answered in todays reader mailbag, boiled down to summaries of five or fewer words. Click on the number to jump straight down to the question. 1. Is HELOC the best option? 2. UTMA and UGMA 3. Second job or career advancement? 4. Buying scissors 5. Fresh vegetables and grocery shopping 6. Financially responsible television? 7. Disposing of old financial papers 8. Realities of job applications 9. Financial independence scam? 10. Physical tracking of Triggers questions 11. Thoughts on secular Buddhism 12. Financial advisor One of the strangest things about exercise, at least to me, occurs when you work a muscle that hasnt really been worked in a while. Youll finish and youll feel fine for the rest of the day, but then tomorrow youre really sore in a bizarre place in your body and, often, youre even more sore the following day. I spent most of this weekend walking around with my arms in an awkward position because it hurt to swing them as I normally do when I walk. It was uncomfortable, but it was a reminder that I had worked hard and improved myself. I think this is true of any meaningful improvement in your life. Yes, it will probably hurt a little. Yes, it might leave you feeling a little sore in some way or another. The question is what you take away from that soreness. Is it a sign that youre on a good path? Or is it something to be avoided? On with the questions. Q1: Is HELOC the best option? I live in one of the most expensive areas in the country, in Northern California. My husband and I have an almost-4 year old, and now our second baby due in August. Moving out of the area is not an option for a number of reasons, most importantly that we want our kids raised near family, all of which live in this immediate area. We both have full-time jobs that pay decently well, and are trying hard to eliminate any non-essential expenses. However, just the cost of the mortgage on our small condo, childcare for two kids, and health insurance will be more than were earning. So, we need a way to pay the bills until both kids are in public school, at which time well again be earning more than were spending. Our home has accrued a decent amount of equity since we purchased it two years ago, so our mortgage consultant recommended a Home Equity Line of Credit. What are your thoughts, though? Would any other type of loan be a better option for us? Julia Without a fuller picture of your financial state, I cant guarantee you dont have other options. However, a HELOC is probably the best option available to you with a reasonable interest rate attached to it. Im sure youre aware of the core problem with this situation: you are riding a financial and professional tightrope. If anything happens to either of your jobs, you are almost immediately falling into a seriously perilous financial state. My suggestion, along with the HELOC, is to leverage your family as much as possible right now to help with this. Accept every possible family invitation you get to share a meal or for free/cheap babysitting. Ride-share with them as often as possible. More than probably any point in your life, you need to be very careful with your spending. Any situation in which youre spending more than you earn is one that is fraught with risk. Q2: UTMA and UGMA My wife and I had our first son a couple weeks ago, and are trying to figure out the best savings options for him. He has started to receive some gift checks written out to his name, so we need to set up some type of bank account for him. Can you help explain the difference between at UTMA and an UGMA? He has separate 529 plans already being set-up by his grandparents, but we wanted him to have some experience with a regular bank and interstates that well be able to teach him with once he gets old enough. Charlie Theyre very similar. There are two big differences between the two that really matter and which one you choose depends on which factors you care the most about. With a UGMA, youre restricted to paper assets cash, stocks, bonds, insurance policies, and so on. A UTMA can hold other kinds of assets in addition the one that most people care about is real estate. A UTMA allows the account custodian to control the assets up to age 25 (depending on specific state rules), while UGMA accounts mature at age 18. If you anticipate your child ever having to apply for financial aid for college, I probably wouldnt use a UGMA or a UTMA. The FAFSA assumes that 20% of the balance of the UGMA/UTMA will be used for college education each year, whereas it only assumes that about 6% of a 529 balance will be used in that way. In other words, theyll be able to receive more financial aid if their college savings is in a 529 rather than a UGMA/UTMA. If you think that paying for college is fully in hand without paying for student loans, a UGMA/UTMA can be a very flexible tool that enables you to gift money to a child while still keeping a hand on the wheel until theyre reasonably mature. Q3: Second job or career advancement? I currently have M-F job in a research lab. On the weekends I work for my uncles construction company that I have worked for since I was 17. He has encouraged me to use the weekends in other ways but I always felt like I needed the money. Lately I have been wondering if I would be better off long term spending the weekends building skills, going to conferences, and building professional relationships. Short term I definitely lose income but long term? I cant decide. Jameson Your uncle sounds like a good guy, and hes probably correct that you can be using the weekends in better ways. If youre in a situation where youre financially stable and able to keep paying off any debts and saving for the future with just your M-F job and youre pretty confident you want to be in that career for the long haul, Id lean toward spending weekends building skills and going to conferences and building relationships and such. Take it seriously, though; dont fall into a rut of using that time for idle things. (Theres nothing wrong with thoughtful leisure, though.) If youre not sure what you want to do, then Id keep the construction job and give some serious thought to your future while getting rid of debt just a little faster. In either case, Id loop your uncle into the decision and use him as a mentor. Not only does he seem like a sharp guy, you may want to keep that door open for the future in case things go awry and you need to go back to construction work. Q4: Buying scissors Whenever I buy a pair of scissors they always seem like they get so dull they cant even cut through paper after like 20 uses. Where can I get a decent pair of scissors that arent junk in three months? Bonnie Rather than just buying new scissors all the time, just sharpen the ones you have. Its not a hard process. Get some coarse sandpaper at the store and then cut through a sheet several times with the sand side down. Then, take a piece of aluminum foil, fold it in half four times so its 16 layers thick, then cut through it several times with the scissors. Then, take a piece of steel wool and cut through it several times with the scissors. Your scissors will be sharp after doing that, probably sharper than when you bought them. You just need to do that every several months or whenever you notice the scissors getting dull. Even super cheap scissors will be quite good if you do this. Q5: Fresh vegetables and grocery shopping How do you balance trying to not go shopping as much with buying fresh vegetables and fruits? On the one hand frugal advice is to minimize your trips to the grocery store but on the other hand healthy fruits and vegetables can go bad so quickly. Macey I cant speak for everyone, but heres what we do. First, if something requires genuinely fresh ingredients, we make those meals within a few days of our grocery store visit. They become a priority. Second, we treat flash frozen vegetables and fruits as being the equivalent of fresh for most purposes. We buy quite a lot of frozen vegetables and fruit. Third, we often do a lot of meal prep, meaning that our fresh vegetables and sometimes fruits make it quickly into meals that are popped in the freezer. Ill buy a ton of fresh spinach, for example, but a lot of it will go into four pans of frozen lasagna. Fourth, a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables dont go bad all that quickly. Most root vegetables last and last. Many fruits last for a long time, too. Finally, we store some of the most perishable stuff in the fridge, following directions on how to best store them to maximize life. If we can stretch something that should only last a few days into lasting for a week, thats a big win. Those steps enable us to buy a ton of fruits and vegetables without them going bad. If we notice something starting to become overripe, to the point where we dont want to use it but its not quite inedible, well throw it in the freezer and use it for making stock or for making fruit bread in the near future. Q6: Financially responsible television? It seems like everything on television outside of a few hokey reality shows is centered around people living way beyond their means or else rich people. Everyone is just spending tons of money and living in fabulous houses and buying tons of stuff. I never really noticed this until you pointed it out. Its such a strong subtle nudge to do the same. What can a person watch that isnt about spending money? Mary I completely agree. Depicting expensive lifestyles on television seems to be the norm everywhere, and knowing the the median American household income is around $60,000, the truth is that most Americans cant live like that. It either becomes something to try to emulate, which is a road to financial ruin, or something to try to ignore, which is hard, or else youre watching shows that revel in values that run in opposition to your own. To tell the truth, I dont watch much television at all any more. What I do watch is generally fantasy or sci-fi or documentaries. I mostly read or play tabletop games instead of turning on the television. Q7: Disposing of old financial papers Im following standard advice and keeping old papers for seven years, but what do you do with them after that? The advice seems to be to shred them but the idea of shredding a box of papers seems like a lot of work with a home shredder where you have to unfold everything and it only takes a few sheets at a time. Maxwell One thing you can do is see if theres a community paper shredding day or one sponsored by your bank. Theyll bring in a HUGE industrial shredder that can shred your whole box of documents in a few seconds you literally toss things in there by the fistful and they get utterly decimated by the blades. Another option is to burn them. Just go camping, use those documents for kindling, and then toss them in there while youre getting a few logs burning. One of my friends likes to rip them up by hand, then put them in a big tub of water so that they turn into this giant paper pulp chunk, then he dries that out, then he takes that big paper pulp brick on his camping trips and breaks off pieces for kindling. Q8: Realities of job applications I am a hiring officer for a Fortune 500 company. There are some popular misconceptions floating around about getting a job at a large corporation. I hope you will be able to share this with your readers. Youll often see media reports that open jobs get hundreds and hundreds of applications for a single job. That is true but it is not the whole story. What actually happens is that if we list a job opening, we will get 500 or so applications, but 480 of them are garbage and irrelevant. Probably 400 of those applications dont meet any of the requirements for the job. Another 60 or so only meet one or two of the requirements. Another 20 might be viable for the job but theyve presented themselves so poorly that we can easily disqualify them. This covers things like resumes with several misspellings or cover letters that use offensive language. That leaves 20 people that are legitimate candidates. Do not be intimidated out of applying for a job that youre completely or even mostly qualified for. Just put in enough effort to submit an accurate resume without spelling or grammar errors and a respectful cover letter that actually addresses this specific position. Thats probably enough for you to make it through the cut of 480 applicants to the final 20. It doesnt mean youll make the next cut, but youll be in that discussion. Mark This is really good advice and its something Ive told many people applying for jobs. Make sure your resume is well edited and matches the job youre applying for and also make sure your cover letter actually addresses the position in question. Thats usually enough to make the first big cut because the vast majority of applications dont even make that threshold. Remember, many job applications are just tossed out there like email spam, just sent to anything even vaguely close. Many other people dont have any idea how to present themselves as someone you might ever want to hire. If you can beat those thresholds, youll probably find some success. Yes, some jobs are filled internally and some others are filled thanks to personal recommendations, but there are many that are filled via open job searches. Dont give up. Q9: Financial independence scam? I was at a store in town minding my own business when this guy in a suit comes up to me and starts chatting. I knew him vaguely as I had seen him a time or two before. He eventually starts talking about financial independence and at first I thought he was talking about financial responsibility but then he really wanted to meet me for coffee to talk about it and gave me a business card. Is there a financial independence scam out there? What was going on? Tim This seems way off to me and I wouldnt follow up with it. Theres a very high likelihood that this individual is involved with a network marketing or a multi-level marketing business think Amway or something like that. Part of the pitch to many people centers around the idea of being financially independent because you run your own business, when youre mostly just trying to sell unwanted stuff to family members. I would in general be wary of a person I barely knew coming up to me, striking up a conversation about something like my finances, and then trying to get me to go get coffee with them. Id simply decline the offer and walk away. If I ever did end up accepting an invite and then someone started mentioning anything like that, Id politely get out of there as fast as possible. Q10: Physical tracking of Triggers questions As per your recommendation from late last year I read the book Triggers in January and am excited to dig into these questions. I spent some time thinking about some personal behaviors I wanted to develop and curb and came up with a list of 12 questions to ask myself each day. How do you physically do these twelve questions and record the answers? Could you walk me step by step through exactly what you do? Marie I use a grid-paper notebook (this one, to be specific, though any grid paper notebook would do just fine) and a black pen. I devote a two page layout per month to this. On the left page, I write out the questions I want to answer as a numbered list. So, it might look something like this: 1. Did I do my best today to be an involved parent with my oldest son? 2. Did I do my best today to be an involved parent with my youngest son? 3. Did I do my best today to be an involved parent with my daughter? 4. Did I do my best today to build a lasting and loving marriage? 5. Did I do my best today to create and write meaningful material for my readers? [] My current list of questions for this month numbers 22. It varies month to month. At the end of each month, I give some careful thought to what I want to work on in the next month, and that might mean deleting some questions and adding others. At the start of each day, I review the questions for that month and think about each one for a bit. I try to visualize what I can do today to make that habit happen. On the other page, I simply have a big grid. Each row is simply numbered with the number of the question 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. Each column is a date 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on. At the end of each day, I score each question from 0 to 10 based on how I felt about my effort for the day, not the results. So, if I sat down with my daughter and had a really good conversation with her and then later on also did something fun with her, Id probably score that an 8 or a 9. Some people find it hard to give an exact number here, but I just trust my gut on it. I find it hard to give myself a 10 I do occasionally, but not very often. (The individual numbers are fairly arbitrary just find a system that is meaningful that works for you.) I record that number in the square where the row for that question and the column for that date intersect. Then, at the bottom of each column, I average the days scores. For me, a day where I have an average of a 7 or above is a pretty good day (and I usually know it it has felt like a good day). Anything below a 5 average is usually a bad day unless something really unusual and disruptive has happened (and I usually know that, too). At the end of a month, I will average all of the scores for that month. Questions with an average score of an 8 or above are usually removed as I view that as something Ive firmly adopted and am doing well. Questions with an average score of 4 or below are often removed, too, as its obviously not something Im committed to sometimes it comes back as a refactored question. The other questions usually stick around unless I decide I need a priority change. The whole point of this is to keep new habits and behaviors in the front of my mind all the time and to really keep an eye on my efforts to improve those behaviors. It really seems to work when I take it seriously. However, its worth noting that you wont see giant transformative life effects from changing a few behaviors. It takes time for those to build up in your life. Its like a quarter of a degree difference in an airplane flight it only seems like a big change after a lot of time. Q11: Thoughts on secular Buddhism I cant believe you would share information about Buddhism. I thought you were a Christian. Disappointed. Amy I dont see them being in much conflict at all. I find far more conflict with Christianity in many of the articles I write on strict financial issues than I do in secular Buddhism. Buddhism has absolutely no reference to a singular, personified deity like the Abrahamic God. None. As far as I can tell, Buddhism basically puts the idea of a deity into an area of beyond human understanding and really doesnt worry about things in that category. I would describe Buddhism as non-theist. My understanding is that Buddhism is basically a set of tools to make your own character and values stronger, which is literally how the Dalai Lama describes it. The tools that Buddhism provides can strengthen ones Christian beliefs, or whatever beliefs they might have. To me, its little different than reading about any school of philosophy and using what it can teach in ones life. If you want to dig into this more, I suggest this article. Q12: Financial advisor Do you use a financial advisor? Why or why not? Jerry I do not use a financial advisor. Sarah and I met with one once, partially because I wanted to actually interact with one and also partially because we hoped that a financial advisor could address or at least reaffirm our answers to a few financial questions we had. I felt like the advisor was not explaining anything to me that I didnt already understand from reading a few good books on investing and he was also trying really hard to sell me on products that did not seem like good investment options to me. This was a fee-based advisor; he wasnt even getting a commission from this sale. We just ended up trusting our own research and did things on our own. I would far rather spend several hours reading up on a financial topic and understanding it myself than paying a financial advisor to explain it and recommend options that I may or may not even want. Im going to end up making a lot of money from that invested time. Got any questions? The best way to ask is to follow me on Facebook and ask questions directly there. Ill attempt to answer them in a future mailbag (which, by way of full disclosure, may also get re-posted on other websites that pick up my blog). However, I do receive many, many questions per week, so I may not necessarily be able to answer yours. https://www.thesimpledollar.com/questions-about-helocs-vegetables-old-papers-scams-and-more/

After market alloys and telling your car insurance company about them?
Hi Guys, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to car insurance... I recently bought a T reg honda civic, its a 1.4i. It had tyres with wheel trims on them when i bought it. However, I am looking to buy a set of alloys to improve the look of the car. NOT for boy-racing about the place I might add! I was wondering if it would be worth my while getting them if my insurance company are going to charge me more for insuring it including the alloys. I dont want to be running about with the alloys on without letting them know because I know it would make my insurance void. Any ideas what the insurance company are likely to say or do? In one of the country parts (not going to give out where I exactly live sorry creepers). I'll only use it to go to school which is like 5 minutes away and work which is right around that same time and maybe occasionally go into Wilmington which is like 30 min away. Thanks!
Why should someone who is say 40 get cheaper car insurance than a 17 year old?
If for instance they passed on the same day, why should a 17 year be categorised as less responsible than a 40 year old in terms of driving ability? I was rear ended (not at fault) the other day my car was totaled. My car was a red 1999 Ford Taurus SE with 146,000. At first i was happy it was gone, but im now starting to think im not going to receive very much for it from my insurance company. I have a question about business insurance?
I just received the Insurance Premium Quote and General Commercial Liability from this Insurance company. In the last page they claim that their company is not licensed by the state of California (nonadmitted or surplus line). It says: The Insurer is not subject to the financial solvency regulation and enforcement which applies to California Licensed Insurers. The Insurer does not participate in any of the insurance guaranteed funds created by California Law. Therefore these funds can not pay your claims or protect your assets if the insurer becomes insolvent and is unable to make payments as promised . So I checked the www.insurance.ca.gov and this guys are there, as active. However, should I trust them? What this notice exactly mean?""

Truck registration in different state health insurance?
I lived in california and drove a car my dad had under his name on the title. He died and i moved to montana with that same car. I have been on my step moms health insurance plan for some time. I am legally able to be on her plan as long as i list myself as being in the same household until age 26. How likely is it that my car insurance will go up due to this?
Haven't had a claim in over ten years Haven't gotten a ticket in probably 5 years. But, the neighbor kid did $2K worth of damage to my car with his bike in three separate incidents. Basically, half of it will have to be repainted! I'd really, really rather not go to court. His insurance is NOT an option in this case. He doesn't have $2,000 laying around. IF I go the much easier route of getting him to pay at least my deductible, how likely is State Farm to raise my rates with a, after deductible, claim of about $1500 or so? Any relevant advice/comment is appreciated.""

Actions for Google Home: Time for brands to get creative
Google’s Home device was launched in November 2016 in the US, and as recently as April 6 2017 in the UK.
As a direct rival to Amazon’s Echo in the battle to gain control of the intelligent digital assistant market, Home has made great strides already. Some sources estimate that Google may already have an installed base one-third the size of Amazon’s Echo, which launched in late 2014.
Ultimately, the more effective and useful hardware will gain the public’s vote. What makes the hardware useful will be the software that powers it – and more specifically, the functionality that it provides.
Google has increased the number of Actions available via Home, and third parties are encouraged to get involved and develop novel uses for Google’s voice-enabled assistant.
It feels as though we are at something of an inflection point for this technology.
As such, it seems timely to take stock of where we are, showcase some innovative uses of Actions, and also look at how marketers can start to profit from this largely untapped opportunity.
Google ‘Actions’ = Amazon ‘Skills’
Google Home is powered by Google Assistant, which has recently been rolled out across all Android devices. Assistant responds to voice commands, and can perform an increasing number of actions.
Actions are Google’s equivalent of Amazon’s ‘skills’ on Alexa; the full list of Actions can be accessed and enabled from the Google Home app.
Amazon has undoubtedly stolen a march in this regard, with over 10,000 skills already available. Most observers estimate there to be between 100 and 130 Actions available on Home.
A further 20 Actions were added last week by Google – but we are really just starting to scratch the surface of what this technology can achieve.
Google has opened this up to third-parties and has also provided a comprehensive guide to help developers get up and running.
The aim here is to move from a fairly one-dimensional interaction where a user voices a command and Google’s Assistant responds, to a fluid and ongoing conversation. The more interactions a user has with a digital assistant, the more intelligent the latter will become.
Actions: The fun and the functional
We can broadly separate the list of actions into two categories: the fun and the functional.
Some of the more frivolous features of digital assistants do serve to humanize them somewhat, but their use rarely extends beyond the gimmick phase. Just say “Ok Google, let’s play a game”, and the assistant will tell a joke, make animal noises, or speculate on what lies in your future.
On the side of the functional is an integration with If This Then That, which opens up a potentially limitless list of possibilities.
If This Then That integrates with over 100 web services, so there is plenty of room for experimentation here.
There are also a number of integrations with Google products like Chromecast and YouTube, along with third-party tie-ins with Spotify and Uber, for example.
One new – and innovative – use of Google Actions was released by Airbnb last week. The Airbnb Concierge Action serves as an information repository that is unique to each property.
The host can leave tips or prompts with the Assistant, which will then be relaid on to the guest when the correct voice command is made. Guests can also leave recommendations on local restaurants, for example, for the benefit of future visitors.
Marketers should pay attention to this. This is a clear example of a brand understanding that a new medium brings with it new possibilities.
Simply transposing an already existing product onto this new medium would be significantly less effective; we need to view digital assistants through an entirely different lens if we are to avail of their potential.
We have also seen a novel – if slightly mischievous – use (or abuse, depending on your perspective) of Google Home by Burger King this month. Burger King used a television ad slot to interact with Home and ask about one of its burgers, triggering the digital assistant to list the ingredients in a Whopper.
Although Google have moved swiftly to prevent this happening again, brands are clearly seeing Home as an opportunity to experiment and generate some publicity.
Digital assistants provide fertile ground for brands, as they create a new platform to connect with existing or potential customers. Moreover, with only 100 or so Actions available, there is ample room to engage with this now before the market inevitably becomes saturated.
For marketers interested in playing nicely with Google on this, you can sign up here to be informed of any partnership opportunities.
Monetizing voice-enabled assistants
This task is rather straightforward for Amazon, in the short term at least. Users can interact with Alexa to purchase from a selection of millions of items and have them delivered to their door by Amazon.
For Google, it is more complex. Their money-spinning AdWords business has depended on text-based search and a visual response. That input-output relationship is thrown off entirely by a voice-enabled digital assistant.
However, the smart money is on Google to find a way to integrate paid placements into their Home product, even if it takes some trial and error to find a solution that does not diminish the user experience.
During Alphabet’s (Google’s parent company) fourth-quarter earnings call in 2016, Google CEO Sundar Pichai informed investors, “[Home] is the core area where we’ve invested in for the very long term.”
The significance of those words cannot be understated. Google is, like any privately-held company, under pressure from its shareholders to deliver ever greater profits.
Selling hardware alone is unlikely to bring the profits Google needs to keep growing from its already dominant position, so there are clearly plans to monetize their Assistant in an ongoing capacity.
That level of fierce competition will bring advantages for consumers, as the products will improve and prices may even drop.
The advantages for marketers are potentially even greater, should they be willing to take some risks and work to get the most out of this still nascent technology.
