On Fanon vs Canon

Look, full disclosure: I hate the name Thomas for The Cat King. I think it's a far too human a name for him, and it takes away from his otherworldliness.

Fandom seems to have attached to the pre-release casting announcement where he was briefly called that and well, fandom's gonna fandom. This would just be a me problem except for the fact that people are acting like the name is confirmed in canon.

I've seen posts from a number of people who think it IS canon due to its ubiquity of use in fandom spaces. They just assume they missed something in the credits of the show, or a version of him existed in the comics where he's called Thomas (there isn't, he's original to the show.)

Now look, this might not seem like a big deal, but I think it IS a problem. I know I might seem biased as a Thomas-name hater, but honestly I'd hate the name just as much if it WERE confirmed canon. I don't hate it because it's non-canonical. I hate it because I don't think it's a good name for him.

The problem comes from when fanon and canon bleed together where it's hard to tell the difference. Where fandom has collectively decided they like certain ideas or tropes and that it fits well with the show. This kind of thing is completely harmless as long as everyone keeps in mind that we're just playing around with fanworks. But when there's slippage...

I've seen it happen in a different fandom where people got deep into their own personal interpretations of characters and dynamics. A lot of people agreed with that vibe and started building off each other. It got pretty far from the source material, but these people felt like they had the right of it. It all made such logical sense to them and they'd spent so much time exploring an avenue in fanworks that it felt inevitable that their interpretation WOULD be canon.

And then a new season came out and not only did it NOT match their fanon, it directly contradicted their interpretation and in some cases proved it completely false.

People got VERY angry and started attacking the show for being "badly written" and accused the showrunner and writers of "betraying" them. When nothing in their fanon was promised or confirmed by canon in the first place, and some of the things they felt were inevitable were SO off what we'd seen on the show that it would have made no sense if their thing had happened.

Then these people turned on their fellow fans who pointed out the things they wanted were never inevitable, and in some cases would have made no sense. And then fandom got toxic.

I don't want to see this happen to the DBD fandom. The way to avoid that is to guard against the slippage between fanon and canon.

There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with playing around in the sandbox of the show's world. That's the point of fanworks, and the fun of it. But we need to let go of this desire to be "right" about canon and that our interpretations are only valid if they are confirmed on screen. And we need to pay attention to the difference between what we see on screen and what makes sense/what we'd like to have happen.

Thomas lovers, you loving that name will not be diminished if he's never actually given that name. And my hate of the name will remain even if it's proven canonical. It's fine! It's not a big deal. Canon and off-canon are both extremely valid types of fandom expression.

Just...keep in mind that canon is canon and fanon is fanon. Sometimes fanon is proved right, but it is not inevitable. And the creators of a show don't owe it to us to do something just because fandom has decided they want X thing.

It starts with a name but can lead to other things if we're not careful.

hey, so I *have* been thinking about this since you responded...8 months ago 😓. In addition to *handwaves vaguely at everything* life, this is very much a Big Screen topic and I spend very, very little non-work time on a big screen. So, we're doing this on my phone. Pardon the brevity 🙃. I did read the linked posts, but im responding here because mutuals.

1- PTSD and death "being kinder". I know better. I have a bad habit of forgetting to contextualize fiction and getting way too invested in the plot and I know that about myself. I even know *enough* about PTSD & how it's often misportrayed, and entirely ignored that in favor of the emotional payoff. With McCabe's gun in play, this should absolutely send warning signals about the reality of how guns work in response to mental health crises. There are definitely other ways for the resolution to have come about.

As for Arkady's "mercy kill", I think the show could handle it better/more thoroughly (ie, with less approval from others), but that it *is* in character for Arkady and how she understands/experiences the world. Tbh, it'd probably be a more interesting story if she & the rest of the crew had to dig deeper into this to reconcile the reality of living with those injuries vs being dead.

And with Jeeter, I can add nothing, just say again that I know better and that you're right...digging deeper into accomodations would be helpful in the long run. (Also, its been a minute, but Jeeter is the one that says he'd be in the way, right? The generative narrative would be for Sana to reply with "accommodating you would teach us how to accommodate others. If you are concerned about your health and easy access to supplies, that is understandable, but don't let your anxiety trick you into thinking you are a burden").

The other big topic tunedtostatic brings up is creator/fan interaction. Im running very short on spoons now, but I'll just echo that, yeah, the internet, and especially tumblr, really allows a lot more overlap. Personally, I don't love fans having this much access to creators (I can think of a dozen examples of creators getting relentlessly hounded about their work because it was their vision and tmnot their fans'. Can we all revisit the very premise of fanfic, please?). I also don't love creators have so much access to me. I feel like im being watched, and frankly creators responding to my posts has driven me out of at least one fandom.

And here's the thing. I'm a big audiodrama listener, but music feeds my soul. I'm Instagram mutuals (idk that that's really a thing, but you know what I mean) with a couple of small artists. I've been to their shows often enough that they know me on sight, and at least two of them know me by name. I don't mind if they heart my posts of cats and flowers and shows. I heart their posts of cats and flowers and shows. I feel like that's a relatively healthy creator/fan relationship.

On tumblr, I'm posting critiques and fics and headcanons. Sure, I'm also posting "go listen to this show its so good", but even those posts include me digging into my feelings and thoughts. I don't need the writer of that show to reblog it with their commentary. I know TMA had a "no creators" tag for a while, though I don't recall the specifics. If it worked, maybe we should take that model and apply it liberally across all fandoms.

I'm gonna start TSCoSI again because I've been thinking about it for weeks, but @falderaletcetera you had some Thoughts about Arkady and McCabe and the trauma of it all in the s2 finale that I'd love to hear more of if you'll allow me to prompt you.

Also I thought about it way too much for a choice (with no actual impact) in a game ahshshshhs, emotionally wise I'd have wanted to be his legal guardian but I think it'd make more sense (legally) emancipation because he would still get government help but there wouldn't be a risk of someone taking him away of in case I wasn't a successful guardian, and he could apply for scholarships more easily while I worked or something lmao I was just excited in that part.

I know there are some books in which you can be poly but the only I remember was moty (mother of the year) which was a better than expected book (to be fair I didn't goof have expectations) and in that one I started to date the three love interests <3

GOSH this is a lot of questions, lemme give it my best shot.

1.) I sometimes still post art on my art instagram, but I prefer not to cross the beams of that and my tumblr so much. If someone rlly wants the handle tho, feel free to ask. 

2.) If this means like...nicknames, too many to count. One of my first URLs was something like “pensword,” which was a reference to Percy Jackson!

3.) I was KINDA in it in 2017 when the first movie came out, but it didn’t hold my attention too much. In September 2020, I really got into IT, tho! I got into it because I realized it was coming up on a year since I saw the second one in theaters (during a wind advisory night in the city I go to college, on Halloween). For a couple of silly reasons (my ex belittling IT a little and me being weirdly internalized homophobic abt it) I was scared to enjoy it publicly haha

4.) My favorite ship in the fandom, ofc, is Reddie! I am kinda basic so I also really think Ben and Bev are sweet. I also really liked Patty and Stan together in the book... they were so achingly sweet together that the bath chapter made me cry for a HOT MINUTE.

Richie is my all time favorite character for reasons I could probably write like 50 pages on! Some of those reasons are like super-duper personal lol so I pull punches on just dumping them on my blog haha! I just really really related to him for a lot of reasons (the humor coping mechanism and the werewolf thingy, to name a couple) so it was only natural I latched onto that boy and went full send kinnie moment!

Eddie is my second favorite bc I love him and wanted the best for him (I don’t want to start disc horse on tumblr, but my gf and I have schemed abt who should have kicked it at the end and it ain’t him). I also have a soft spot for kid Ben in the book, bc I really thought he was a sweetheart (I mean, cmon, walking around whispering Bev’s name? Adorable! Hiding away in libraries? Relatable!)

5.) I’ve done a bunch of stuff! This blog has a ton of IT content. I have made a bunch of fan art (most of which hasn’t been posted sdjbvkdsjbvk). I have written a couple fanfics (a finished oneshot and one unfinished longer one that will...probably stay that way). I have a reddie playlist on spotify, too.

6.) There’s been a few people who’ve done some IT stuff I’ve really liked! Uhh @stitchyarts  wrote some fics and has done some beautiful art to go with it that I really liked!! @skelesocks did some HELLA charming art, tho is now mostly Queen blog. No shade there, I have a Queen blog, too, lol. Ask for the URL if you want it. Both of them focused on the miniseries tho.

There’s a couple artists who have done Reddie stuff I have really liked, too, which is super inspiring. here’s a few of those: @trashcanprince @mxgicdave @meowsteryyy ..... tbh fave IT blog of all time tho has to be my gf, em, @dr-kaspbrakmd , bc she got me full swing obsessing and also it was a big bonding thing for us early into the relationship *pauses for crowd to say AWWWWW*

7.) Assuming this means fanfics, like I said, a lot of Stitchy’s works, especially Tinted Windows and TV Guides (which now i rlly want to re-read lol). I kinda have a hard time with fanfic reading bc im picky and sometimes it’s better to daydream my own stories. The other Reddie fics I’ve liked will make yall get the shepherd’s hook and yoink me off stage for public indecency for sure so I’m gonna leave that to ur imagination <3

8.) I feel positively heinous and pick-me trying to get ppl to read my old reddie fics that I wrote during the crushing weight of crippling lonliness so no. they r also not rlly that good so you’re welcome <3

9.) No actually! I have thought about it. I have also schemed the idea of starting my own reddie zine and being super choosey about who gets in but that’s just me wanting to curate content I like lollll.

10.) uhhh decorum, understanding of complex relationships/emotional situations, and the common sense not to fetishize gay men <3 that sounds rlly snotty but there’s some activity tm in this fandom that yucks me out big time. Also, I wish more ppl would have seen the miniseries/read the book but that’s just me being choosy.

Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover - whew holy shit this book was a doozy for me. one, she's like only the 2nd fem author i've read (i'm not much of a reader if i'm being honest, dont have the patience for it), it is such an emotional love story with great characters and it had me saying i love you to the loved ones in my life after reading it (but that may or may not have to do with the fact that i just have a lotta repressed emotions that this book, and sleep deprivation from binging it, managed to wring out of me haha). it's also pretty funny n quirky n cool n haha it's the first time i read a sex scene that wasn't on fanfic haha

Hmmm. See the problem here is I will write almost anything, but I’m gonna answer what I might be too embarrassed to post. Maybe something that involves someone coming in their pants in public, in front of people who don’t know? That could apply to several of the aforementioned ships but I like Force-bond shenanigans with Reylo or like remote-controlled toys being used on the most tight-laced of the two (like Thrawn if it’s Thranto). That sinful enough for you??

13. what is your heart-breakingist head canon

Oh, what’s most heart-breaking to me or to everyone else?? Haha.

I don’t need a heart-breaking headcanon when Jedi Night happened in canon

I have a couple:

a) Obi-Wan realizes how much he might’ve liked to be born a ~regular~ person and had a family/kids with someone when he holds Luke/Leia for the first time. He’s never really thought about it before, but now that the Jedi Order is gone he realizes how much that possibility makes his heart ache.

b) Many of the Jedi/padawans that survived Order 66 really miss their Clones. Like they have pretty severe PTSD symptoms about the whole Jedi purge, but they can’t help but remember all the hundreds (thousands) of times Clones saved their lives and when they think about them being forced to become Stormtroopers (most of them would hate serving the Empire given its values), those Jedi/padawans feel like they should’ve protected the Clones.

c) I know the timing isn’t completely known with everything, but what if Hera suspected she was pregnant but didn’t know for sure yet when Kanan died. Like, she was debating whether or not to tell him before shit got real and regrets it forever that she didn’t. Likewise, maybe Kanan felt something in the Force and suspected it himself, but didn’t want to scare her and one of his last thoughts was wondering if it was true.

Well, I personally don’t really think they are the same XD I personally believe Specter is lying and fitting his story where he needs it - kind of like what Vector did - but I guess we will see … it just seems a bit odd how he apparently has ties to all the main characters… except Go, he’s been MIA for so long I can barely care >.< Im more curious about what Kogami will do next and what Revolver is doing currently…

As for Yuusaku/Aoi, I do like it … so far. It hasn’t been destroyed for me by the fandom yet like most main lead pairings before them were… I do HATE the ship name, though, and refuse to use it on my sideblog. Sadly, the canon hasn’t given us much there - imo - so I mostly base my liking of it on my own vision of them as a strong power couple and being awesome together… still hoping for a tag duel in some shape or form, I can dream >.<

I don’t think they are the same either. What IS the same, however, is the sense of betrayal Yuusaku’d be getting from both if the Revolver = his friend theory is true, so the impact of a potential Revolver reveal - especially on the beliefs Yuusaku has been harboring ever since the Lost Incident - would be a LOT more insignificant if there’s already been the ‘shock’ of ‘OMG, Spectre was one of the six children, and he’s actually siding with the culprits’ before.  And yeah, this still applies even if Spectre was indeed lying, so all in all, it’s just not good writing :/ But yeaaaah, Vrains does make it very difficult for me to care about anyone other than Yuusaku, Aoi, and maaaaybe Spectre (though I’m really not that big of a fan of his recent reveal as of now). The other characters are just... flat. Boring. Predictable. Of course, the same applies to Go.

I’ll always stick to Yuusaku/Aoi too tbh. Angelmaker is just cringey and they really should’ve gone with Aloofshipping back then XX___XX I see it more as a couple between thinkers, though, and I believe, Aoi could learn a lot from Yuusaku in regard to thinking for herself and getting rid of her underlying naivety. From what I’ve seen of her so far, Aoi, too, appears to be a thinker - even if she isn’t really living as one - so Yuusaku helping her get in touch with her true nature is something I’d really love to see, though.... I’m really not that optimistic about that if most of their interactions continue to be about the ‘threat’ they both fight rather than about the two of them as individuals.

I’d definitely love to see a tag duel too! Not too optimistic about that either, though, given how Vrains in its entirety appears to be anti anything that isn’t a one-on-one duel >.<

                   They had only meant to save their parents,  yet in turn,  their sacrifice                    had instead awoken the Nemeton. With the mystical tree now active,                    a beacon was created in the area of Mystic Hills, California.  It awoke                    something far more dangerous than they were prepared to deal with:                                                                                      T h e  H e l l m o u t h.                    It isn’t just  werewolves  and  vampires  anymore  ;  there is no alpha                    pack anymore, and the Mikaelson move to New Orleans even halted.                      The town is attracting vampires by the dozen,  and these ones aren’t                    fond of  humanity.   In tow come the demons,  spirits,  and  demonic                    worshipers that want nothing more than to bring on apocalyptic fever.

IMPORTANT PLOT POINTS:

This will be primarily character driven, but we could also have mini plots on the whole that we want to include. It’ll focus on the after effects of Scott, Allison, and Stiles doing the sacrifice and awakening the Hellmouth that’s located under the Nemeton.

The verse is based a little off Buffy, but note you don’t have to be familiar with Buffy to join.

We’re kind of messing with canon, but if you need some sort of season reference, think post-alpha pack for Teen Wolf… and I’m not really sure with TVD because there isn’t really a great place to cut it. If you would like to add another canon character that’s just included, just send me an IM & we can see what works ?? Also, I’m not really sure Katherine really has any place currently, because why would she put herself in a war zone where people are killing villainous supes by the dozen?

OCs and other fandoms are potentially available to join depending on your idea & how you think they may fit in.

The town is one town squished together: Mystic Hills, California.

We’ve related a couple of people! Scott and Tyler are cousins, with Scott now being a Lockwood and his father being Richard and Mason’s other brother. Caroline and Isaac are siblings, with Liz being the mother and Mr. Lahey being the father. Liz is still alive and took the kids away from him after Camden died and her husband started to become abusive. Elena and Jeremy are now siblings with Allison. Elena was still adopted, and she does know this now. Jeremy and Allison are twins. Bonnie is now Alan Deaton’s daughter, making her a druid instead of a witch. 

Most people are their same species from canon, yet there are a few changes of course. Still, please look on the character list to make sure you know what they are! c:

Derek is still an alpha, along with Scotty being an alpha as well. I’m a big fan of double Alpha action tbh.

There are a couple people on our list that are dead or have left the show. Just…roll with it.

We’re mixing werewolf lores in a sense. Primarily will be Teen Wolf lore, but bitten wolves will need to have triggered like in TVD.

To make the face claims match the character age a little more, the characters who would usually be ‘high school’ age will be more default around 24-25 & any who are normally older than them will be aged up some as well. Please view the character list for reference! I’m fine with age adjustments when possible though.
