As an American that is very seriously considering moving out of country somewhere and is considering moving to a Scandinavian country, I'd really appreciate it if you'd share a little bit about what life is like there? first of all; i spent half an hour writing the answer and then accidentally closed the tab. i am sCREAMING INSIDE !!!!!

but, lets do this again, so:

hey!! yeah i am from finland! born and raised! and its not weird to ask ,, tbh i kinda get your point. i actually answered to an ask yesterday telling what are my 5 favorite things about living in finland, but i can tell you some more under the cut, especially differences etc ! this was actually fun to write 

ok first things first, food is very expensive. ofc not in fast food chains like mc donalds etc, but restaurant-restaurants are expensive and also grocery stores, unless you’re buying the store’s own product so at least we’ve got a cheaper option. but yeah restaurants are very expensive (salads starting from 12euros, pizzas from 13euros, chinese/nepalese starting from 12euros, sushi is so damn expensive dont even get me started on that, i only ever eat it in a lunch buffet… and if you wanna order a steak or something like that lmao prepare to pay nearly 20euros OR MORE),, anyway during lunch hours there are usually special offers. coffee prices aren’t that bad. we also have starbucks! but not all the drinks that you guys have

just like food, alcohol is very expensive, so if you like your liquor be ready waste a lot of money on it. thats why finnish people actually go to estonia by ship to full the cabinets bc their alcohol is so much cheaper! its a finnish tradition lol. same goes with cigarettes. its 8 euros for a pack in here so 9 dollars.

traveling abroad is pretty expensive, but mostly just to the states and some very exotic places like the maldives idk. its like 1000euros to travel to california (i would know because i’ve always wanted to visit but im poor af 3). traveling inside finland is not that expensive , gas is p expensive but depends on the gas station 

clothes are not that expensive, at least it depends on what you’re buying. mostly anyway its the same price range that in usa i think but we don’t have the same stores, at least not forever 21 and primark for example but we do have h&m and zara and then some european stores like bik bok (which is my personal fav!) also victoria’s secret is super expensive cause it’s not normal for finns. there are only 2 of them in here anyway, one in the capital city aka helsinki and a small one at the airport

now to holidays! in actual calendar order ;-) valentine’s day; not big on celebrating, stores have stuff and some people do spend it but… not like… many easter; we have a thing similar to trick or treating, kids only dress as bunnies and witches tho may day; basically students (from like college) get “crowned “with student caps. everyone goes out to a park for a picnic and to drink. a lot. im telling you finnish people are huge drunks,, also its part of the tradition to dress funnily, stores sell weird may day clothing (like glittery hats and neon colored sunglasses), also there are sugar donuts and a either alcoholic or non-alcoholic (you decide) drink called sima. aaand decorations like balloons and paper streamers are literally everywhere midsummer; other finns go to their cottages and barbecue and go to sauna and swim in the lake. others go to a festival to get wasted. either way its a beautiful finnish tradition lmao, also this is the night when the sun shines for the whooole night!! not like literally shines but its not dark at all. there are bonfires and honestly, i’d say midsummer is the one holiday where finnish people really drink. like its -the- heavy drinking holidayhalloween; NO trick or treating which was very sad to kid-me bc no one gave me candy when i went t-o-t as a kid. also still pissed off cause it’s my fav holiday. stores sell halloween stuff and people dress up for parties, but no one really decorates. which sucks. finland sucks for halloween tbh. one plus is that we have the perfect halloween weather because its super dark and chilly and rainy and orange leaves everywhere during halloween-time!!thanks-giving; very very very little people celebrate this. definitely not a common thing. i only do it with friends and we call it friends-givingindependence day; obviously finland’s independence day. 100 years this year!!! christmas; 1000000% celebrate. so much snow. so cold. every store has christmas things and plays christmas music. everyone decorates. i mean it’s only fair bc santa claus lives in finland duhnew year; well i don’t think theres a country that doesn’t celebrate this tbh. stores sell stuff again. we have fireworks. also a lot of drinking. againalso obvs moher’s day and father’s day

concerts happen, not as often (especially with big stars) as they do in the states, but they happen! so do festivals. i actually summer-work at the largest one in finland ayyyyyy 

also, finnish people swear. like. a lot

MINUSES;- it can get freezing in the winter. last winter the lowest we hit was like -32 degrees- most of the time during summer it rains. this is also a finnish people joke because there was a meme saying “in the bible it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. they called it the apocalypse. in finland it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. they called it summer”- some finns are very narrow-minded, so expect not everyone to definitely not agree with you. i actually have a hard time dealing with this and usually always stood out from the mass mainly bc i am way too social and open-minded and everything to hang out with kids my age because their opinions and standards never really match to mine. finns are tbh kinda raised to be cold and they have to be well educated. oh boy if you only would’ve heard all the things they have told me after i have told them that i wanna make a living out of singing and acting and writing! - well the expensive things that i mentioned and the lack of halloween :-( - also if you wanna make it big, like international-big, in the music industry for example, it is very hard to try and do that from here because literally no one either knows that we exist or thinks that we live in igloos and have polar bears in our backyard. also everyone loves sweden more lmao and we hate that. there’s actually a finnish joke ,, we won them in hockey one year with 6-1 and every time we argue with a swedish person… thats always a great comeback, no matter how long its been :-)

PLUS- THINGS;+ we are mostly a very safe country with an amazing president+ free health insurance+ free studying + same sex marriage is approved+ summer is very beautiful if its not raining. especially in the countryside. amazing!!! + finns aren’t over-all bad, for example there is an incredible bond between finns when it comes to extreme finnish stuff, like midsummer drinking, seeing dramatic movies that revolve around finnish history (like war for example, a re-make of an old movie called the unknown soldier just came out and it was intense in the cinema!), hockey victory and this especially!!!! like it doesn’t matter if you hated that guy from your math class, if you two run into each other on a victory night, you fucking hug for three hours because WE FUCKING WON and tbh that is what i find most beautiful in our culture. its cute + ok honestly, just christmas again. finland is the winter wonderland i am telling you!

overall, i enjoy living in finland very much. it is a home and even though i wish to live abroad one day, finland will always be my home!! so if you really wanna move out, i suggest you at least consider finland. we are actually an amazing country. i hope this helped you! XO

1. This image is a portrait shot of  a man who’s covering himself in a milk bath to the point where he is blending into the water which is then blending into the bath. i’m guessing the model is a man due to the hands looking manly and rough along with the hair looking short at the side and long at the top which is a traditional style for men to have in 2000′s however towards the shoulder which is exposed more than the rest of the body it looks slightly like a woman's underarm with barely any armpit hair so the gender isn't very well shown unless they were transgender or just not comfortable with that specific image. 

2. This image is of a man who is all underwater except from his head which is above water allowing him to breathe so it cant represent suicide. this image was shot underwater most likely using a waterproof camera so you cant see the models head. there are some reflections of the man on the waters surface which can be shown as shadows from the light source above the water. personally I think this was shot in the local swimming baths where there are some life guards on hand to help if needed, this is because of the tiles grey strip behind the model and down the right side of them. I think the image was meant to be a portrait shot however the photographer only managed to capture the models waist and a wide amount of the waters surface which im guessing wasn't intended however this could be due to lack of space available or wanting more reflection than model.

3. This image is a portrait of the model behind a curtain that's see through or a mesh texture. this specific portrait has the light source being the window behind both model and item. the model has then either pushed or come closer to the curtain creating a shadow or silhouette shape allowing the viewer not being able to tell who it is behind the fabric other than being a person in general. there have been some leading lines created starting at the top of the curtain leading down which is allowing the viewer to see the shadow as their eyes gradually follow the curtains creases down the shot. I personally like this image due to it being mysterious and unknown, I think you would see this sort of picture for anything horror related like book covers, dvd covers, Halloween festivals etc.

4. These shots have been put together as a series however if you look carefully the string of the balloons  join up with the string from the noose around the models neck. each individual image looks completely random if they were just separated from each other due to the balloons just floating away in the sky on it own then with the man just sitting on the chair with a bag over his head and a noose this could suggest he was possibly kidnapped and held for ransom which co insides with the light being similar to a spot light directed towards him creating a shadow behind where he is telling us the lighting was most likely just slightly on the left of the camera. I feel as though the photographer would have wanted this series to look like the model just given up and wanted to float away or possible suicide if the balloons floated so far up the gravity would pull the string tight enough to strangle him whilst the bag finishes suffocating him. both images were edited in black and white whilst the contrast levels were adjusted a little increased allowing both images to have some visible shadows along with more details and texture within the clouds and wrinkles in the clothing. looking at these from a distance you can tell the top image is slightly pale and more dull than the bottom this could be due to lighting differences.

5. This image is of a man looking into the mirror but his face has been blurred out whilst everything else is in focus this could suggest he is unsure of who he is as a person or has some problems in life and he feels lost of what steps to take next. this image could have been shot in either camera with a long exposure on a low iso or using Photoshop. I personally like this image due to the model being somewhere different instead of just on a plain white background where you can see full body or just portrait. this image was clearly taken in a room where the mirror was directly opposite the window which is the source of lighting for this image whilst it creates shadows going straight down the middle of this wall. given the type of wall paper this image has along with the texture on the doorknob im guessing the room is either in an old house, their grandmas house so both model and photographer could be related in some way or when they explored a Victorian house such as Calke Abbey. I really like this image because of the vintage vibes when you look at it.

6. This simplistic shot is of a model mostly likely male lying across a vintage looking table blending into the colour of the wall so you can only tell its him from the shadows on his bones and along the outside of his body structure. the way his body is positioned looks as though he may well be uncomfy or dead or just giving up in some way. the plant on the right of this image is slowly decaying and rotting away due to it weltering in no water and looking lifeless suggesting that the model could have been laying there doing the exact same given that you can see his bones and spine im guessing this image could represent anorexia or depression in some way. this image is in black and white which I think this is how it was taken however im not too keen on this image because its quiet and doesn't have much happening with a wide amount of negative spacing above the model.

7. This image is a black and white portrait of a man who is dressed smart however his face has been messed up which could be because he wanted to be unknown or similar to the other image where he didn't know what he wanted to do in life or was a mess again linked to depression or anxiety. this image was edited on photoshop where the photographer most likely used a tool which allows them to smudge the image in a smooth and curvy way however this tool also allows you to go back to a certain area and edit it without undoing the whole experiment. I really like this image and I will be inspired by it towards my final piece.

i would like to thank every god out there for the fact that october 31st, 2071 is going to be a saturday, so I can have quark’s root beer float take place not only on halloween, but also on Junpei’s drinking night (well, day)

good idea: after the explosions, it takes a really long time, but people eventually start celebrating a few holidays. Halloween and solstice & equinox festivals are the ones that crop up first- there’s only ~100-200 people left in the area where Junpei lives, but they find ways to make things work. Farmers share extra crops, people find or make musical instruments, and everyone just comes together to celebrate another year that they’d survived.

I feel like Junpei gets really good at repairing mechanics and stuff, considering how he and quark both talk, so what if one year for a winter solstice festival, he managed to repair an old dvd player? he’d been working on it in secret for a long time (not even carlos would know), and he pulls it out and hooks it up to a TV like “guys check this shit out”

he doesn’t have any holiday movies, but that’s ok. 

oooh, or imagine he found a copy of frozen, ironic movie choice is ironic. I already like to think that he showed Quark Wall-e when he was really little, and he thinks the movie is rather hopeful.

the game mentions a travelling theatre that comes to town once a week, but that doesn’t mean junpei doesnt have his own dvd player, especially if we remember his... ehe.. grandpa videos.

i really wish we actually got to see the apocalyptic earth, but its a lot of fun thinking about what it’d be like. The way I see it, after the explosions, people were kinda separated into two categories- those who were able to manage to get to the moon, and those who couldn’t. THere’s 54 rhizomes, 53 active if we don’t count good ol’ rhizome-9, and I bet they could house a lot of people. Probably between a quarter and a half of the remaining human population went to the moon, leaving at most 1.5 billion people on earth.

that still sounds like a lot, but when we consider how big the earth is, and how far it’s spread out, it’s really not.

anyways, those on the moon are the rich and famous, the politicians, or the scientists. The cure for radical-6 was developed on a rhizome, and technology continues to move forwards and be developed. Even still, anyone who’s smart enough can work their way up to the top of a waitlist for a shuttle, if they’re able to create.

For the people left behind though, things are a lot harder.

The only cars that people can get to run anymore are electric, because all the gas reserve’s dried up, and either nobody can reach the places to find it, or nobody cares enough. Solar power is useless, so people rely entirely on hydro and wind- nobody’s said it out loud, but there’s an implied agreement that nuclear and antimatter power is prohibited, in case another infected gets the same idea as before.

However, despite power being kinda hard to come by, people don’t really fight over it that much. The leaders of the communities are the ones who lived through hell, and they don’t have the energy to fight. the game mentions money, but i honestly feel like thing’s’d work far closer to a batering system- people offer goods and services to each other. Junpei’s essentially a parts dealer and mechanic, who works on anything and everything. He doesn’t really talk much to most people, but he’s the most skilled person in the trade aroun (or more accurately, the only one around).

Everything’s been rationed out pretty fairly, and capitalism only exists on the moon (which’s caused many problems there, that those on earth just ignore). They don’t have much in terms of medicine, nobody dares enter hospitals in case there’s remnants of radical-6 about, but people make up for it by working together.

There’s two people who are directly mentioned in game- a doctor, who looks after junpei at one point, and a female teacher, who taught quark how to read. Now, in all honesty- I don’t think it’s highly likely that the doctor is one as we know it. They’d probably all have either died in the outbreak or fled to the moon, leaving only students behind.

another point- Carlos. There’s no way he’d just up and abandon Junpei, so i figure they lived together for a long time. Carlos would’ve had emergency response training, and he’d likely be the closest thing the area had to a doctor. So, I headcanon he was the first ‘medic’ in the area, and he spent a lot of time taking medicine books from libraries to read everything in them, and commit it to memory.

The doctor mentioned in-game then, is Carlos’s ‘apprentice’, someone who was too young to remember life before the outbreak. He takes over once Carlos dies (and he’d have to die for things to make the most sense chronologically), but he’d be similar in practice- doesn’t charge anything, he just wants to help people. Now, obviously, people are grateful to both of them. Carlos is something like a leader for a long time, because he’s reliable and smart and kind. When things get rough, he ties them all together, and they’re made stronger as a community because of him.

Now, I haven’t named the community, but I like the idea of Junpei suggesting they name it after Carlos in some way, after his death. Perhaps even at his funeral pyre, who knows. But regardless, it’s an interesting thought.

The teacher from before is also someone Junpei’s age, a woman who was in teacher’s college and about to graduate when everything went wrong. This part is obviously all headcanon, but she’s dating the doctor’s sister (a woman who was about 18 when the outbreak occurred), and the two of them took care of the doctor during the nuclear winter.

For a while after Carlos’s death, Junpei’s kinda the drunk uncle of the community. People deal with him because they have to, because even as a drunk he’s the only one who knows anything about repairing that finicky part of the truck, or how to get that tractor working, ect. Once he finds quark though, he starts to straighten up. He doesn’t drink as much, he tries hard to look out for his son, and just by gosh he wants Quark to know that even in a world as shitty as this one, there’s still some hope for the future. Specifically, Quark is his hope for the future.

He knows that someday he’s going to die, but he also knows that Quark is a good kind person, and that he’ll continue to grow and mature and be a good person. He has faith that Quark will be able to look after himself, and he has faith that he’ll be able to live a good life, no matter what happens.

now, this doesn’t count on my other big headcanon though... namely, what the transporters do to aging.

I see this as going one of two ways- either it messes with your body structure slightly in a bad way, and you’ll die younger than your original body, or it messes in a good way, and you life much, much longer.

So, consider: Junpei at 129, calling up Akane like the crusty old bastard he is, like “get down here it’s quark’s birthday and you’re not missing another one” “junpei im not his mother” “The last card you sent him said grandma on it” “ok fucking fine”
