Circling back to the topic of what makes enjoyable fiction, I think there's room for a range of approaches, depending on what the story's focus is, who the intended audience is, etc. Avatar: The Last Airbender has a north and south pole that as far as I can tell have a temperate day/night cycle. This isn't a huge problem, because it's not what the story is about. Game of Thrones has baby dragons that drink milk (whyyyyy) which drives me up the wall and winters that last years with no explanation for how that works in terms of agriculture, food storage, and wildlife adaptations, which is fine (in the sense that it doesn't make the series unreadable) because George R R Martin sunk his overthinking things budget into complex black-and-gray politics and extremely intricate plotting. The Princess Bride...you get the idea?

Stories -- writers -- have focuses. This is a good thing. When Lloyd Alexander wants to lean into how the time after the great big war isn't a happily ever after time, it's a fixing up the damage time, I'm there with him. When Terry Pratchett wants to go off about boots, awesome, especially since this is pratchett and he can make talking about the economics of boots entertaining. When Neil Gaiman wants to take time to explain how the middle ages weren't one big monolith, things changed from century to century, that's cool (and it helps that he's also subverting one of those moralizing "if you had immortality you wouldn't like it" stories in the process -- he isn't forcing the history to hold people's attention.) But the thing is, every time an author's focus is on one thing there's going to be 20 other things it's not on and sometimes that means implausibly common whatever-color dye and different people have preferences and dealbreakers in different places of course. But there's always going to be something that slips past. And sometimes -- especially for general audiences/kids' stories--a lot slips past and that's OK, because the focus is on telling a story that's understandable and relevant for and interesting to people who don't make their own clothes. The purpose of fantasy stories isn't to do perfectly accurate historical recreation plus dragons. It's to tell stories. Sometimes the drop spindles and rag pickers add to the story, sometimes they don't, often it's really a matter of personal taste and "I prefer stories that don't piss me off with the historical inaccuracy of treating fabric as disposable"' isn't, y'know, morally superior to "I think the best part of A Knight's Tale was when they sang We Will Rock You." They're morally neutral personal preferences.

And I guess I want to say that, because... well, being oblivious to colonialism isn't really a matter of personal preference. But I don't really see a connection between whether the blue dye is thought out or not and addressing serious socio-political issues in fiction. I can see how they can be connected. But...a lot of the good stuff challenging-your-world-view-wise is not the historically accurate stuff, ime. (And goodness knows there's fuckall correlation between how fancy or cringe a work of fiction is and whether it does what a specific person reading it needs it to do. Which tends to be softer stuff, feelings and characterization and how characters interact. When a character does something unforgivable and is forgiven anyways, when the character knows they can't be loved but gets loved anyways, when a character can't take it any more and somehow they get through it anyways, etc.) (maslow's hierarchy of fiction needs or something.)

i think one of the reasons i get mildly annoyed about worldbuilding threads that are 200 tweets of why you should care about where blue dye comes from in your world before saying someone is wearing blue is that so few of them go up to the second level of "and that should impact your characters somehow" - i don't care that blue dye comes from pressing berries that only grow in one kingdom a thousand miles away if people are casually wearing blue
