Chiari or not, for pain or for security (because yes dizziness, tripping etc are security issues), if you thought about it then you probably need it. You don't have to use it all the time but at least you'll have it.

If you feel self-conscious, well, you will get used to it, as humans do, and maybe even one day make it yours (I saw a guy a few weeks ago with a jurassic park cane, the mosquito-in-amber thingie. I think he was pretty proud of it when he caught me staring at it smiling. Well. I hope.) You know who never feel self-conscious about having a cane ? People in their twenties with ankle trauma etc. Even when the splint isn't visible.

Also you probably won't change your mother's mind soon on these things…there's a good chance it's a mix of the classic "mother knows best" AND some denial of your illness (it's frequent in families and friends of sick people. They don't want you to be more sick than they thought. I still do it reflexively sometimes. It does NOT mean you have to forgive her for saying these things, it's still HER job to realize it and work on it.). My unasked-for advice is : when you're tired you're just allowed to answer "well Chiari or not it still sucks", and continue the fight for acknowledgement another day.

This brought me to tears... I just had a talk about this with my mum this morning and it was ... discouraging to say the least. She said she understood why I felt like that but also that she doesn't think getting a cane is a good idea because then there wouldn't be too much for improvement; that if I were to get a cane I'd rely on it too much and my balance issues and dizziness would only get worse because my body wasn't used to regulating my problems anymore.

I felt pretty ...gaslit? manipulated?...
