TWINNNNNNNNN
Slumdog Millionaire: Jamal Malik [INFP]
Introverted Feeling (Fi): Despite all the bad things that keep happening to him, Jamal is a hopeless romantic. Money is not that important to him and he tries to win the game because he hopes his childhood crush will be watching the show, not because he wants to be rich. He has a sense of morale and unlike his brother, he doesn’t jump onto every occasion to steal or swindle. He even gives 100 $ to a blind beggar, even though he must know the poor boy probably won’t be able to keep it. He’s sensitive to criticism and feels very offended when someone says the girl he loves must be ugly.
Extroverted Intuition (Ne): He has a strong imagination. When tourists ask him about the Taj Mahal, he makes up stories on the spot. He uses his goofy sense of humor in front of the cameras. He’s also perceptive about people and isn’t fooled when the TV show presenter tries to trick him.
Introverted Sensing (Si): He comes back to his childhood place and remember how different things used to be. His great memory allows him to find most of the answers. Every memory is associated with emotions and he relives these emotions whenever he thinks back: the loss of his mother, the sadness when he met the blind friend again and so on.
Extroverted Thinking (Te): Thinking rationally is not his strongest point. However, he’s able to make up a plan when needs be: he finds a way into the TV show and when he can’t find the answer to a question, he uses his joker and logic to win.

Ok, so Monkey Man.
I realize that there's so much to this, but the fact that this film is so accessible to all audiences.
Not only our currently political times (yes, I'm sure it'd be applicable to any political time), with Ukraine, Palestine, US elections, you name it, the antinationalist overtones make sense in any context.
The fact that we have such a huge minority representation, in a position of nuturance and power, that is so well balanced with realism and empowerment, it includes people in a similar position across the world.
The emotionality and desperation is so well depicted, who doesn't feel that? The production of contrasting close ups and large scenic shots, the art of the color palette of the nationalist party invoking violence, the motifs with the sun, roots, hands. It all speaks to the human aspects of this film that give it such a raw feeling.
And the music, it's accessible to generations, the hidden gem of Roxanne, Somebody to Love, not only pulling out old bangers, but speaking to a subliminal inner monologue of the kid. (Also, as a nerd, Bloodywood in the fight scene with the hijra, is just such a direct political message and I love all of the production team for that).
I'm just so in love with this film.

Its so annoying when I see people saying 'Monkey Man' is the indian John Wick. No it really isnt? It's its own film & has its own important message without having to compare it to another movie because you dont have the creativity to describe it. Plus it does a disservice to all the work that Dev Patel put in for people to turn around & say that. Tell me you missed the whole point of the movie without telling me you missed the whole point of the movie..
#monkey man#dev patel#if it wasnt clear: i fuckin loved the movie & im very proud of what Dev has achieved

I've watched my current top 3 films of the year all this week; I Saw The TV Glow, Identiteaze and Monkey Man. I'm really fascinated by much all 3 pull on trans narrative in unique yet overlapping ways. One I can definitely speak more to in terms of bts as its my trans sisters film and I had direct influence, but I'm just so happy to see so much excellent trans art all releasing at the same time. Im gonna do a video on Glow, I wont discuss Identiteaze too much publicly unless Im chatting with Jessie about it so both of those I'll expand elsewhere.
Dev Patel is so phenomenal in this film, his directing was exceptional and I am obsessed with the editing and cinematography. On all technical and thematic levels this film is incredibly specific and cohesive. I love how somultaneously antifascist and procommunity this film is. I love that systemic transphobia and police violence are explored explicitly and imo well. This movie handles women better than 99.99% of the entire action genre(and many other genres too). It also says fascists make violence against them necessary, but even as its necessary that violence is never pleasant and costs lives. I cannot lavish it with praise enough.
Anyway if you watch only 3 films from this year; make it these ones.
