nygmobblepot in gotham episode s5e08 nothing’s shocking!!! dude!!!!!! both ed and oswald have decided how it has to be between them (ed: annoyed reluctance, oswald: guarded indifference) but there’s still so much tension because they KNOW how badly they can hurt each other. but they can’t help it!!!! they want this connection so much!!! so it’s frightening but they still TRY!!!! IT’S SO ROMANTIC, GOD!

the way rlt holds his body in those scenes, it’s very OTT with gestures and yelling etc; but when oswald is telling penn about how he welcomed him into his home and saw him for who he was and not what others thought of him…it feels like he’s facing ed, like he’s using the periphery of his whole body to tell ed this without having to be open with him directly. how he rolls his eyes when he says, “it’s why i’m alone” because that’s a concession that is meaningless if he isn’t being vulnerable.

oswald, being confronted with a physical manifestation of his selfishness in penn, thinks he has no choice but to be brave. admit he was wrong or lose them (him) forever.

ed recognizes this and reciprocates by being brave in his own way. by killing penn, he kills the illusion that they need a proxy to discuss their feelings and that they can’t just be open with each other.
