How John Tavares is helping Matthew Knies prepare for his first Maple Leafs playoff run

Matthew Knies looked around the Leafs dressing room and shook his head. It wasn’t long after the Leafs had finished an optional practice on Saturday afternoon, and many of his teammates were already nowhere to be seen. The highly-touted NHL rookie questioned a few Leafs staff members as to how the room gets so vacant so soon. Quickly, Knies threw on a Leafs ball cap, one he is still working in to fit just right, and realized he should probably hit the road too: his new roommate was probably waiting for him in the parking lot, having finished practice about 20 minutes earlier: John Tavares.

Almost immediately after Knies signed with the Leafs on Sunday, Apr. 9, the 20-year-old received a flurry of text messages from Leafs stars, all offering up a spare room in their house for the highly-touted Leafs prospect to stay in for the duration of the playoffs. Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner texted Knies, but Tavares’ text came first. Knies happily jumped at the opportunity to live in Tavares’ basement.

And for what could be a roller coaster ride for Knies, having Tavares to lean on could help him understand the new life he’s now a part of.

“It makes me feel way more like part of the family,” Knies said.

Knies spent the majority of his first week with the Leafs on the road, playing in Florida, Tampa Bay and New York. He kept his head above water, registering his first NHL point and playing effective, physical hockey in tight spaces and showing impressive smarts with the puck in the neutral zone. Once he finally arrived in Toronto late last week and had a chance to breathe, he did so in Tavares’ basement.

In short, Knies has looked like a player who could be trusted to jump into an NHL playoff game if necessary. And maybe even become an X-factor.

But even Knies will admit there’s more to surviving in the NHL as a rookie than just making smart reads with the puck: with the intensity and physicality of games having ramped up, he knows he needs to treat his body better and improve his eating and sleeping habits.

He’s learning from one of the best in that regard. Tavares’ preparation and efforts to eat well have become renowned around the Leafs.

“Taking notes from a guy with such experience, I couldn’t pass that up,” Knies told The Athletic.

Knies said Tavares’ alarm goes off around 6:15 AM so the Leafs captain can tend to his two young children, with a third child on the way.

“He lets me sleep in a bit,” Knies joked.

The pair were among the first to arrive at the Leafs practice rink at 9:30 AM for an 11:45 AM practice on Sunday.

Tavares will drive Knies to practice, another chance for Knies to open his ears to Tavares’ experience. One thing Knies told The Athletic he’s gleaned from Tavares is how to balance the increased travel in the short amount of time he’s about to face, with multiple upcoming trips to Tampa Bay. Perhaps a few tips like leaving his window open on flights if a time zone change is coming to keep his circadian rhythm intact.

“He’s not cutting corners,” Knies said.

The two new teammates have had a few meals together, and Knies has spent a little time with Tavares’ children. But hey, it’s worth remembering here that Knies is essentially a child himself.

“I don’t know if I’d be the first one he’d ask to babysit,” Knies said.

There is precedent for what the Leafs captain is doing: a then 19-year-old Tavares lived with then New York Islanders forward Doug Weight when Tavares was a rookie.

“All year, he’s been there for me whenever I’ve needed him,” Tavares said in 2010.

Tavares is paying it forward, if you will, and ensuring that if Knies needs someone, he’ll be there for him. Knies’ parents are in Arizona. The new city Knies is living in is one he has only spent a few days in here and there during last summer’s development camp.

Assimilation at a stressful time of the season can be, well stressful, for a young player. But it feels less so for Knies.

“I didn’t want to be stuck in a hotel in my own bubble,” Knies said. “It’s made me feel more comfortable in Toronto.”

That sense of comfort could soon matter. Knies dressed as an extra forward during his first full Leafs practice on Sunday. Yet if the Leafs need some offensive pop, it feels likely he will be the first forward to draw in against the Lightning. He’ll need to keep up with the faster pace of play should he draw into the playoffs. But Sheldon Keefe has never been afraid to tinker with his lineup in search of a better solution.

“Every experience he gets is gonna help him,” Keefe said of Knies on Sunday. “Obviously the talent that he’s shown — he’s a guy that can help us and is another great option for us to have.”

Should that happen, Knies could feel more ready than he would have anticipated when he first signed with the Leafs. And he’ll have the captain.

“That’s going to help my experience,” Knies said, “and help me get accustomed to the NHL lifestyle.”

Yes, almost every man is in the same category . it’s a suit . i know that’s the basic of men’s evening wear but it also doesn’t impress me . some men are placed higher bc i feel like they took the basics and did a little something to make it more interesting .

THE SAFE CATEGORY

the safe category kind of stands for it’s not a bad outfit but it’s rather. basic on the scale of outfits seen throughout the night . its a nice choice they look good but its also a safe choice .

gorgeous . the only thing i have to say is that i wish the bag (? they weren’t allowed bags idk what it is) was the same undertone as the dress . the dress was more yellow while the bag seemed more pinkish in photos . she looked fantastic tho

she’s always stunning but that green dress just complimented her so perfectly . the length was perfect the fit was incredible the tailoring was perfect she looked great . the mirror dress was stunning although i wasn’t a fan of the nude illusion slits in the front

i really wanted to talk about this bc he looks great i think all black suits are wonderful i love them they look fantastic and elegant and they’re something other than the average but for the love of god you can afford a tailor . the arms and legs were too long they bunched up a little and i love oversized things but for suits it makes them a little messy . great outfit but tailoring would make it fantastic .

i loved this outfit although it was simple it’s a silhouette we don’t see a lot and it suited her really well . it’s rlly elegant and i think the hair and accessories suited it and kept it interesting but still to the minimal idea that niki was going for . she looks good .

top toot : triciaisabirdy. that floor length white floral gown was made for her. the colours compliment her skin tone and her tattoos the puff sleeves added a bit of flair to the bodice to distinguish it from the other sweetheart neckline gowns that were popular on the carpet the makeup was minimalist but effective her tattoos almost acted in place of necklaces or other accessories she looked fantastic

top boot : ranboo i just don’t get along with that mask . there was too much going on in one area everything interesting about the outfit was centred around his neck and sternum the red were all slightly different shades the idea was good i liked the idea of the colours but execution needed work .

I dont know how you're functioning right now. I couldn't move for hours after finishing the series, and then it was all I could talk about to my poor mother.

I was screaming the whole way through that epilogue. Even without the emotional toll it was taking, all of my theories were being proven right.

Many sympathies though for just finishing. No book will ever be the same again. Unsolicited advice: read a shit book next. You will not be able to do a good book the justice it deserves

i also don’t know how i’m functioning. for the past few hours i’ve just been sitting like this:

everything about that book was just SO. i think the series in general reminded me of harrow the ninth because at first it was a bit convoluted (esp in book 2 and getting a bunch of flashbacks) but at the end it all came together perfectly and in the most insane way possible.

you’re so right about all your theories getting confirmed in the epilogue. the SECOND Caden entered the time stream i wanted to scream because i knew what he was gonna do and it was sooooo satisfying. i will say though. the scene where he talked to Ell. when she told him “if you died, i would grieve for the rest of my life” after reading an entire series where he grieved her death for literally the rest of his life. i think that broke something in me tbh.

i could talk about Caeden for hours but aside from him i’m SO happy that Wirr, Asha, and Davian are okay. i loved all of them so much. i think i would kill somebody to learn what Dezia and Aelric did during that book, and what happened with Cyr, but hasn’t the author already said he’d eventually write a book about that? i might be making that up but i think i heard that somewhere.

yeah i have. SO many thoughts. im never gonna stop thinking about this series. everyone i know is gonna hear about it.

Okay! So, I can let u know!! At least some its like a big big big revamp so not a lot of what im gonna say will make much sense. But i will try!! So the updates im making to Tom started actually with a whole redev of the Sathix and then that spiraled into basically a whole damn rewrite to the setting and well some story parts!

Thats the gist of it and i actually do hope to be able to answer a lot more questions about Sathix now cause WOWIE! They got cool… just as the Opposites to Volites SHOULD be tbh. So if u actually do wanna ask about the Sathix or Tom in general plz do!!!

I will say that as a result of this revamp i um MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE created a map of the world :)

And Cyr and Lance actually are on very opposite sides. So i can tell u about them but if u wanna know about some of this plz ask my partner :) he’s the mastermind, BUT HERE WE GO

See Lance is a Storm chaser captain, which means he works for the Storm Chaser Collective out of edens edge. Now, this means hes evil, like he’s actually very evil. He’s doing the bidding of the bad guy and in this case he is trying to coerce this island town to allow SCC access to the island. Basically surrendering control to them,

Cyr, a calamity who formed and LIVES on this island and basically rules the town. Fucking hates storm chasers, and knows this means the actual death of his home. He won’t allow it, so things get really really really bad. Cyr and his sister Marlowe Fight Lance and his partner captain Lucy. Marlowe takes Lucy and Cyr takes lance

This is a huge scuffle that Injures them both pretty bad but Cyr is impaled in the chest by Lance and infected with a corroding pollution that also spreads from lance into the water. Basically causing a flash pollution, Cyr is mortally wounded and now is going to get very sick like everyone else

Lance has no intention of curing anyone of what he caused, he could get what he wanted so the next plan was to destroy the ecosystem of the island irreparably and take the problems with it :)

This is why Cyr and Lance fight :) Cyr wants his fuckin home safe!!
