Summary:
First it's graduation, and then one years passes, then two, then five. This job they're in, everyone around him seems to love it, seems to need it like they need the air in their lungs and blood in their veins, but sometimes he looks up and can only see how much it takes and takes and takes.
This life was what he was made for, what he was good at, but just maybe he can have something else, be something else.
Excerpt:
“I don’t know if I was ever meant to be a hero in the first place.”
There’s a sigh on the other end of the line that seems like it releases every bit of air in Aizawa’s lungs.
Graduation day rolls around with pale sunshine and what he feels is relatively little fanfare. For all that they have seen in their three years at UA, he thinks that this should feel more monumental, like maybe it should be bigger than his brain is making it.
But he looks around at the crowd and the decorations, sees Midoriya bouncing on the balls of his feet and exuding enough energy to power a city block, and thinks maybe it is that big, maybe it is monumental. It just doesn’t feel like anything monumental to him.
So he sits in a fold out metal chair and listens to Nedzu talk about the fundamentals of heroics, about what it means to be a Pro. He watches Midoriya rise from his spot further down the front row, where he sits right beside Momo, his suit gleaming green in the streaming sunlight, and take the microphone with shaking hands. He talks about how close their class is, about how they are siblings in arms, bonds forged in blood-wasitworthitwasitreally- and how it is an honor to take up the mantle as heroes amongst other professionals. He watches in a daze, hands cold as ice and sweating bullets, as Momo takes the mic from Midoriya and talks about dedication, about honor, about bravery-I’mnotreadywe’renotready-and then they’re all standing to get their diplomas and, more importantly for most, their licenses.
The Big Three go first, and then it’s all alphabetical from there. He watches Midoriya wipe tears from his cheeks on the sleeve of his uniform as he walks away from a handshake with Toshinori, watches Momo take her diploma from Nedzu and a wide, full smile stretches her mouth, watches Bakugou bare his teeth in a grin down at his license.
Eventually, it is his turn. He walks up the stairs to the stage and takes his diploma from Nedzu, shakes the chimera’s paw, and takes his brand new Pro Hero License as well. The look on Nedzu’s face is unreadable as always, but now more than ever he cannot decipher the glint in his eyes.
He steps away and off the stage, watches the rest of his class take their diploma and license with a sense of awe about them. He looks down at his own license, official Commission seal in the corner, and his face and name stare back up at him. Their licenses aren’t supposed to have their real names on them, for security reasons and for underground Pros like Shinsou who need anonymity to survive, but he had never gotten around to changing his hero name.
He stares down at his ID photo, traces a thumb across the official seal, and breathes past the lead weight that has dropped into his lungs at the thought that they’re here, they’ve made it.
He looks around, sees Midoriya pull his mother into a hug, both of them crying happy tears with All Might standing awkwardly next to them, as if the whole class hadn’t figured out he had practically adopted Midoriya. Bakugou is being aggressively group hugged by his group of friends, face a storm cloud but hands unlit, his equally explosive mother taking pictures in the background. He sees Shinsou pull a faux dismayed Aizawa in for a picture, and that’s another mentorship turned pseudo-family that has been poorly hidden since their second year.
His own family, his own father, is walking toward him, and he can see their smiles from here. He’s holding his Pro license and his family is proud. There’s so much happiness in the clearing he can practically taste it, and he feels nothing.
This is what he’s worked for since he was a child. So why does it feel like he’s still got a full marathon to run and no end in sight?
I saw you’re in town. Want to grab lunch?
He sends the text before he can overthink it, going back to halfway watching the late-night news and idly eating his cooling dinner. According to the newscast, Midoriya will be in town for the next week, and he hasn’t seen his friend face-to-face in over a year.
I work most days that im there!! Are you free Monday? The text also has what feels like way too many overly excited smiley emojis that still don’t compare to the literal sunshine that is Midoriya’s megawatt smile, and he has to shove down the rush of affection that settles in his ribs at his friend’s enthusiasm.
I am free Monday. Just let me know what time.
He is free most days, is what he doesn’t say. He sees his mother once a week and video-chats his siblings just as often. He tries to see Momo once a month, but she is busier than ever between her new agency and her recently revealed relationship with Jirou. He texts Midoriya and Iida, does his best to stay in touch with Tsu and Ochako. He has a text chain with Shinsou that goes quiet for weeks and then chimes notifications constantly for days. He sends memes back and forth with Kaminari.
He came out of graduation with hard won friendships, relationships he bought with blood and sweat, and he clings to them with a ferocity he does not cling to his work with. They all talk about their work like it brings them this greater purpose, like it’s what supplies the blood in their veins and oxygen in their lungs, but he clocks into the same agency he interned with his third year exactly on time and clocks out exactly the moment he is supposed to.
He does his work. It pays his bills, and that is no small thing, he thinks. He is saving lives and making a difference, and that should be enough. (It is enough, it has to be enough, what else would he even do?) But he thinks about the light in Midoriya’s eyes when he talks about a job that sounds like it just keeps taking and taking and taking and can’t quite muster the same level of enthusiasm.
Does 1:30 work???
It does, in fact, work. He would have made whatever time work, he thinks, barring a major villain outbreak.
Yeah
They make plans to meet up at the restaurant their friend group had haunted back in high school, which isn’t too far away from his agency or where Midoriya will be that day. He types the plan into his phone’s calendar and sets up a reminder he will not need. The strict organization is a habit he fell into in high school alongside Iida’s detailed schedules and Midoriya’s enthusiastic notes, and it is a habit he has yet to shake.
The newscast flashes on the screen in front of him, the aftermath of a fight and newscasters talking. There’s a video of Red Riot carrying civilians, and then a transition to him looking scuffed and beat up but relatively unharmed.
Something close to ice settles in his stomach as he watches his former classmate, his friend, field news reporters, and even through the screen and all this distance he can see how tired Kirishima is. The newscaster is talking, but he cannot hear their words. All he can see is the way Red Riot, because he is Red Riot right now, is smiling for a camera and the way his shoulders are inching up towards his ears, a habit he’d been reprimanded for in Media classes since first semester second year.
The ice solidifies, and he picks up his phone before he can think about it.
I can’t wait to see you Monday.
I can’t wait to see you too!!!
xXx
Time passes til Monday in a hazy crawl. He has Saturday off, and uses the free time to go see his mother. He has recently taken up new hobbies, primarily punch needle just because when he brought it up at the last class get-together Bakugou had laughed right in his face, and he couldn’t resist the eye-twitch it brought about every time he brought it up in conversation. That’s what started it. Now it’s just soothing.
He calls his sister, feels his shoulders relax as she tells him all about her elementary classroom. They don’t talk about anything heavy, and he feels all the tension in his body seep into his couch cushions as the call ends.
He’s been trying for more precision with his ice recently, more out of idle curiosity than any use it will have in the field. It has morphed into his second hobby at home, which is tiny ice sculptures that melt and leave puddles when he gets distracted and are too lumpy by half. He thinks about his sister and her soft, gentle voice on the phone, talking about her classroom of kids, and her fierce, sharp eyes that always see through him, cut him to the quick, and conjures his quirk until there is a tiny badger in his palm, only recognizable by the fact he knew that’s what it was supposed to be.
“Oh well,” he thinks, vaporizing it. “They’ll get better.”
He stops, blinks. The thought buoys him all the way through work the next day and into Monday.
Midoriya is already at the restaurant when he gets there, so he makes his way to the table and sits across from his friend. He’s got his characteristic green curls pushed up under a cap, and he’s in a well-worn All Might sweatshirt that he recognizes from third year. Shouto has done nothing to cover his own recognizable hair, but he changed out of his uniform before he left the agency. It’s enough, he thinks.
Midoriya is bouncing slightly in his chair like he’s barely holding words back, like he can’t quite keep his energy contained in his mortal frame, and it reminds him of research rabbit holes and long nights and manic grins. He looks so different from the smile he gives the press that it would have given him whiplash had he not seen this same megawatt smile across a phone screen at least once a week.
“Hey! How are you?! I know we talked the other day, but I haven’t gotten to talk to you since I traveled and I haven’t seen you at all on the news, which I hoped was a good thing, but you never know.”
He smiles, waits for Midoriya to finish his thought process before answering his first question. It’s good to see his friend. “I’m well, well enough. I’m not on the news enough to make watching the news a good indicator for how I am, though.”
Midoriya scoffs, his grin still in place. It’s a little bit blinding. “You’re on the news more than you think! Anyway, what have you been up to? We spent our whole last call talking about my last case, I want to hear about you!”
Midoriya has leaned forward, resting a little on the table, and Shouto is the sole focus of that green gaze. It’s a little breathtaking to be under that much scrutiny all at once, because one hundred percent of Midoriya’s attention is no small thing. He realizes in that moment how little he has to actually say, when he isn’t talking about his family or his friends. He doesn’t want to talk about work.
So he just… doesn’t. “I took my mom my latest project, and she’s doing really well. She’s been asking about you, actually.”
If Midoriya is confused about him not talking about their jobs, he does an admirable job of hiding it. He leans forward on his arms, twists a napkin in his scarred hands, and lets Shouto talk about his family and his new hobbies for longer than he thought he had words for.
Their drinks come, and eventually their food. Midoriya is swirling broth around his bowl by the time he runs out of questions and Shouto runs out of words. He hasn’t brought up work once during the entire meal, and Midoriya hasn’t asked. He feels happier, lighter than he has in months, and Midoriya is smiling, softer and gentler than his megawatt smile and more precious for it.
“We should make a habit of this.” He says, before he can let his brain get in front of his mouth.
Midoriya doesn’t even hesitate. Both their schedules are busy and the travel time would be insane, but he doesn’t hesitate when he says. “We should.”
xXx
There’s a heart monitor beeping steadily, and the rapid fire tap-tap-tap of a cell-phone typing indicator somewhere to his left. When he turns his head he can see a bowed head of mussed green curls and broad shoulders covered by a partially torn uniform.
The room smells like antiseptic and the air feels chilled even with his constant thermoregulation. Even if he can’t quite remember what part of the fight landed him here, he’d recognize the hero-specific hospital rooms, head-wound or no.
“Hey,” he says, and almost chokes on how dry his throat is.
Midoriya’s head snaps up at the sound of his voice, phone forgotten in his hand. He looks exhausted, tension lining his shoulders and bruises smudging his eyes, though whether those are from lack of sleep or from his own round with a healing quirk Shouto doesn’t know.
“Hey.” Midoriya says, clearing his throat. “How do you feel?”
He takes inventory of himself, tenses the muscles in his legs and arms just to prove he can, then rolls his shoulders and tenses at the shock of pain that shoots down his neck. “My head hurts, but mostly I’m just tired.”
Midoriya sighs, but mostly he just looks fond. Shouto doesn’t think he has any right to be this aggrieved considering how many times he has been on this end of the hospital bed.
“That makes sense. I don’t know how much you remember about the fight, but you went head first into a wall there at the end, so you should be free to go once they clear you on the concussion.”
He hums, looks around for a clock to see how long he’s been here for. The fight had been midday, but the curtains are pulled tight and the bright, artificial lights from above give nothing away. There isn’t a visible clock, but the board on the wall they use for long-term patients hasn’t been filled out and they’ve only clipped his papers there, so he assumes he hasn’t been here very long.
“You know,” Midoriya starts, and his voice shakes like it did years and years ago, like he’s nervous and doesn’t know how to get these particular words past his teeth. “You end up in the hospital more now than you ever did when we were kids.”
He whips back around to Midoriya, fast enough it sends pain shooting behind his eyes and down through his shoulders. He grits his teeth as it passes, even though Midoriya’s eyes go soft and concerned. He’s leaning forward in the barely-padded visitor chair, still scuffed and worn from the battle Shouto barely remembers, and thinks that can’t be right, can it?
He thinks back, traces the past few months, past few years in his mind. The fifth year anniversary of their graduation had come and gone with little fanfare not too long ago, all of 1-A that could get off of work crowding around a busy restaurant table. They’d poked fun at Midoriya and Bakugou and their new tug-of-war over the Number Two spot until the two (or Bakugou, really) had almost come to blows, and they had had to bow out of the establishment before someone called a camera crew.
But then he thinks beyond that. Thinks about how many times someone has had to call in Midoriya for this exact thing, especially after he had moved back here after he had shot up the rankings again. He closes his eyes and tries to remember if there has been a single month in the last year he hasn’t landed himself in the hospital, always over something minor, and can’t come up with a single stretch of time.
“Yeah,” he says, because he has nothing else to say in the face of the pit that has opened up in his stomach. “Being a pro is hard, Midoriya.”
Midoriya laughs, bright and loud and utterly exhausted as he slumps back in the creaky hospital chair. “I know. I know! But still. Be careful out there. If not for you then for the rest of us.”
He smiles, wry and knowing, and hauls himself out his chair. There’s a pit yawning wide in Shouto’s stomach, numbness and horror warring for space in his chest, because what has he been doing, what has he been letting happen?
“I’m going to go let someone know you’re awake, okay?”
He just nods.
xXx
Half a year passes before anything comes of his conversation with Midoriya, but he cannot get his words out of his head. He goes into situations at work just like he always does, throws himself into the line of fire like he has since he was a teenager, and cannot get the nagging voice in the back of his head to stop whispering, “you’re being reckless, you’re not trying hard enough, you need to be careful.”
He sits vigil over his coworkers when they get hurt and thinks nothing of it. It’s part of the job. He watches Midoriya get slung through drywall and crumble the brick behind it a month later. He feels cold and empty just long enough for the panic to set in, just long enough for him to get him to first responders and see Midoriya open hazy eyes as they bandage his face. He passes the neutralized villain to the authorities by complete muscle memory, and somehow makes his way to sit with Midoriya in the hospital until he wakes up from all the different healing quirks used to set his body to rights. When he wakes up, he doesn’t seem that upset about the whole affair, but then Shouto thinks back and realizes he hasn’t been hurt like this in over a year, and this is nothing compared to the damage that maps out his exposed arms.
He himself is nursing a bruise the size of a grapefruit along his ribs and got closer than he is comfortable admitting to hypothermia in the fight that took Midoriya out, and he’s not the one in the hospital bed.
“How are you feeling?” he asks Midoriya, hovering a chilled hand over Midoriya’s shoulder, where he knows bruises lay.
“Ah, I’m alright. It could have been worse, you know?” he says, and presses the bandaged skin into Shouto’s offered hand.
He doesn’t want to think about the alternate, could-have-been-worse situation. Instead, he amps up the power in his palm until Midoriya sags against his hand, a relieved sigh passing between his lips. “I do know. You’re still hurt.”
“Couldn’t’ve been avoided.” His words are slurred, all soft around the edges in pain relief and exhaustion.
It couldn’t have been avoided. He thinks about the bruise marring his ribs. He thinks about the concussion that had landed him in the hospital not that many months ago, and the other, minor concussions and sprains and bloody-blue-turned-purple bruises he’s taken home and wrapped because he took a hit he couldn’t, wouldn’t dodge.
He thinks about the way his very skin aches sometimes, in the mornings and after being out in the cold for too long.
“Maybe.” He says, and curls his fingers more securely over his bandaged shoulder.
xXx
It goes on like that for a while, and he can’t quite figure out what hits are the ones he’s supposed to take and the ones that can be avoided. He watches his friends take hits day after day, throws his own body into the fray and comes out mostly unscathed. They went to school for this. He should have the answer to this by now, he thinks. He remembers answering questions about acceptable risk. But then, it’s all different in the field, now that it’s his job and his call and there are people he could save if he just got between the situation and them. Midoriya’s words rattle around his brain at night, and he spends a lot of time making tiny sculptures of mishappen lions that melt in his palms as he thinks about what it means to put your all into a job and what it means to be reckless.
He figures it out all at once on a Thursday evening.
He’d been called in as backup for villain apprehension, what should have been textbook and a relatively safe position considering Midoriya and several sidekicks were the heroes taking point on the assignment.
One minute he’s helping shepherd civilians out of the wreckage, and the next minute he looks up and is met with a flying chunk of concrete coming right at him, rebar sticking out at lethal angles. There’s nowhere to go, no where for him to dodge and he’s protecting civilians besides.
So he just. Stands there.
Time seems to slow down to a crawl.
There is no fear.
The chunk of road is still flying at him, there are explosions in the distance, and there’s a hollow pit in his stomach.
This is how I die. He thinks. It isn’t a scary thought. After everything, this is how I die.
A voice, shouted loud enough to be heard over the boom of the explosions is what pulls him out of his stupor.
“Shouto!” It’s Midoriya. His voice is frantic and panicked and full of fear and his adrenaline kicks on pure instinct, and that’s when he remembers to do something.
His quirk manifests in his hands not a second too soon, a mini glacier freezing the oncoming boulder (and half the destroyed roadway) in place feet before it can hit him.
It is far, far too close for comfort.
Midoriya bounds over with a crackle of green lightning, sparing a brilliant smile for the remaining civilians before grabbing Shouto’s shoulder and turning him towards an awning for as close as they’ll get to privacy right now.
“Are you okay?” he asks lowly, and his eyes are wide and concerned despite the fact that neither of them have any noticeable injuries.
Except Shouto’s heart is beating so hard he’s surprised Midoriya can’t hear it, his right hand has completely frosted over despite his otherwise complete control over himself, and the hollow feeling he’s been carrying around since he can remember has just cracked wide open into something hot and raw and painful.
“I will be.” He says, voice rough, and it’s the truth even if it doesn’t feel like it.
“Okay.” Midoriya frowns, hand warm and heavy on his shoulder. “Okay. Just let me know.”
He doesn’t push any further, just squeezes Shouto’s shoulder and then heads off to take care of the rest of the civilians caught up in all this.
Shouto turns, chest aching and heart racing, and does the same.
He has a job to do.
xXx
He is fine, or close to it. He sits in his living room hours later, heart still thumping hard in his chest and hand still icy against the rest of his skin, and bounces his phone against his thigh.
He is fine. He’s got a text message from Midoriya checking up on him and an email notification from their agency manager asking if he got checked out by a medic, and he’s ignoring both of them. The image of concrete rubble keeps flashing through his mind, jagged rebar tearing through the air at fatal speeds, and he can still feel the way his body wouldn’t move.
The way he just accepted it. Welcomed it.
He can’t call Midoriya. For all that he is his best friend, the thought of laying out the endless pit, the numbness that has plagued him since before he can remember scrapes him raw. He cannot face that boundless optimism with the cracked weight in his lungs right now.
But he cannot go on like this. The kind of indecision, the kind of recklessness, the kind of hopelessness, he had felt is going to do what Midoriya had warned him about sooner or later and get him killed.
This might have been the path he has always been on, the path he was set on and guided down, but maybe there’s another way. Maybe there’s something else out there for him.
He hits the unlock button on his phone and searches his contacts, looks for a number he hasn’t needed in a long time. Swallows down something like bitter pride, remembers if you ever need anything from days a little more fearful and chaotic, and hits call before he can talk himself out of it.
It rings four times before an answer.
“Aizawa.”
“I-“ He cuts himself off.
“Are you safe?” He asks, urgent. The sounds of laughter trickle in over the phone’s tinny speaker, voices muffled but loud in the background. He had forgotten in the onslaught of his own personal numbness, but Eri would be starting high school by now. He still remembers her wrapped up in Mirio’s cape and Midoriya’s arms, and hearing her laugh muffled by the hallways of her home sends a surge of guilt through his chest for calling his teacher out of a happy, early retirement.
“Yes.” He answers, because he is physically safe. “I’m sorry. I—”
He feels like his words are falling from his mouth completely unbidden.
“What’s going on, Todoroki?”
“What do you do when you can’t be a hero anymore?”
“Kid—"
“I don’t know if I was ever meant to be a hero in the first place.”
There’s a sigh on the other end of the line that seems like it releases every bit of air in Aizawa’s lungs.
“There are other options for you, Todoroki, other than hero work. You’re good at what you do, but this isn’t your only option, kid.” He sighs again, and this time it sounds just as tired but more accepting, more like contentment. “Trust me, there’s a life beyond your license. If you need to, get out while you can.”
Shouto takes a deep breath in, holds it, lets it out. In for eight, hold for four, out for eight. The cracking, aching pain in his chest that has replaced the numbness he has been carrying around since he can remember eases ever so slightly. It feels a little lighter, a little easier to breathe around.
“Okay.” He says, and his voice is rougher than he wants it to be. “Okay.”
“Let me get you a phone number to call, okay kid?” Aizawa says.
He hears a shriek of laughter and thundering footsteps in the background, and even before he finds a pen for the phone number, he can feel part of the weight weighing down his lungs chip off and away.
xXx
He ends up talking to Hound Dog, who he wasn’t aware while he was in school but is not only a therapist but a licensed career counselor for the Gen-Ed and Business students along with dealing with the Heroics and Support kids’ course load.
Hound Dog starts the call with the ever professional “How can I help you?”
Which he appreciates more than he can say, because he saw Hound Dog more than anyone in his class except for maybe Midoriya and Bakugou, but it also grinds his brain to a complete and utter halt.
He hasn’t talked to Hound Dog since graduation. Unlike Aizawa, he hadn’t had a connection with him outside of their strictly professional one. He isn’t comfortable or familiar with the man. He cannot imagine making this call without the prompting he had gotten, and he wonders, wildly, if he would be freezing this much if he had made this call to someone with the exact same job title that he had never spoken to before.
He thinks the answer would be yes, considering he can’t get words out past his teeth.
“Hello?” The tone is worried, but not confused. He has a feeling this is not the first time someone has frozen on the other end of a phone call to Hound Dog. This isn’t even the first time Todoroki hasn’t been able to get his thoughts in line when talking to the man.
He clenches his fist, lets his nails press into his palms, and breaths so deep he thinks he can feel it in his toes. Thinks about the words he’s been rehearsing.
“Ah. Hello. I was calling to ask you how I could market my hero-course education and experience in a non-heroics field.”
He can hear the tap-tap-tap of a keyboard, and then, “I think I can help you out with that. Do you have any ideas for what you want to do, or are you just starting this process?”
His brain stutters to a halt again, his thoughts a whirl of—I don’t know, I haven’t thought this far ahead, this was all I was ever meant for, I don’t know what to do now—but it’s quicker to cut off that train of thought this time. He has his laptop open in front of him, and a pad of paper beside him. He resolutely doesn’t click the pen like he wants to.
“I don’t know exactly what I want to do yet. If you have ideas, I would welcome them.”
It comes out a lot steadier than he feels.
xXx
He finishes the call over an hour later with about forty tabs open for different vocational programs, for local colleges with education and analyst and support programs, with a notepad with numbers to call if he has questions about programs.
He ends the call and breathes deep, the room around him dark except for his computer monitor. His resignation letter is typed and ready to print, glaring up at him from his Important Personal Documents folder.
He raises his hand over the little bowl he keeps on his desk to practice his sculptures.
With a rush of cold, the details are lacking. It wouldn’t win him any awards, but he thinks it looks like it’s meant to. A phoenix taking flight.
For the first time since he picked up his license, since maybe forever, the feeling carving space in his chest is hope.

So regarding my last ask about the whole species thing, im gonna go into detail about it with screenshots and such. I wont be giving out any names, but im pretty sure you can easily figure out who they are and what the species is.
Ive created a species called Sugarkats. They were officially released yesterday, and I came up with the idea on monday. Basically theres another species on the amino and they're literally cats with gliders (normal and transparent), sharp claws, and sharp teeth. Keep in mind, the only thing these two species (the other species and Sugarkats) are the gliders. Thats it.
Moving on, a guest artist, note, NOT the creator themself, for the other species, dms me asking if we could talk about my species. I agreed, and then they go on to accuse me of referencing the species. I never did, I didn't know the species existed until after I came up with mine. Then that GA asked if them, the creator and I could create a pm to talk about it. I agreed, and joined the pm. They then decided to ask if I could remove traits (one trait) and the gliders themselves (which would mean I would have to change my entire species). Then they kept saying that the two species would be too similar and people wouldnt be able to tell them apart, and just kept trying to get me to basically get rid of my species/change everything about them.
I completely understand why they would be uncomfortable, but they took it too far. They were pretty upfront and sort of demanding, where the creator could have dmed me themselves and we could have worked things out. If that were to happen, I would have been much more open to changing things.
Now, while all of this was happening, they were talking shit about me in the guest artist chat. I have been shown screenshots of the chat, and I wont be giving away that persons identity.
I will post the screenshots of the other things being said in another submission, but for now here is, what I took as a, death threat. The person said it was a meme/joke, and apologized for it, but this is still wanting to cause me physical harm by the looks of it.
Right now we're still waiting for leaders to respond to pms, and get this handled. But what they've said is wrong and hurtful.

So, how was Pokemon Shield?
Before I start, this is going to cover the main game, not post-game. Sorry, no talk about Dickhead Swordward and Shieldbert. Also, if it wasn’t obvious already, massive spoilers ahead.
IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE SPOILED, DO NOT READ THIS POST
I’m not going to ramble for hours about this, because to be honest, my thoughts about this are much briefer than they are for gen 7/Alola. Not to say there’s not much going on in this game, just that if you were expecting a super professional and profound review of the game from me, you may or may not be disappointed.
I will do my best to be articulate, though.
I’ll start with the rivals, the most obvious choice the begin with being: Hop.
Hop is definitely not like Hau like so many people were desperate to make me believe pre-release. In fact, while their arcs are similar, there’s a biiig difference. That difference, to me, is their changes in character. Hau had a big ass crash, yes, but his character change was pretty damn gradual. With Hop, after Bede puts him down, well, you can pretty much tell he’s not the same guy right off the bat the next time you talk to him. I absolutely adore Hope and I’m glad he got as much screen time and focus as he did. His arc was fantastically written and beautifully handled all the way to the end. All I can say is, another cinnamon roll for the collection.
Then there’s...Marnie.
Now, I don’t hate her, far from it. I adore her very much as well. The problem is that it seems she doesn’t get much time to flesh out like Hop did. A problem that goes both ways between her and Bede. Of course when I got to the seventh gym and met big brother Piers I actually did like the dynamic they were going for. Buuut I really wish they had given Marnie just a little more time to herself before that. I just didn’t feel like they did enough with her and...that’s a damn shame considering how popular she was upon her first reveal. Of course, again, this isn’t to say I don’t think she’s still just the cutest little punk goth button ever.
Sigh...and now it’s time for me to talk about Bede.
Look, from what I could tell, half the fandom was nuts for him, the other half was sick to death of a generic douchebag rival that adds no flavor to the table. But I’m a little torn on this one. Like I said, him and Marnie share an awful side effect of Hop’s arc being the most prominent...they don’t get enough time or everything that happens in their arcs feels...rushed, by comparison, at least in my opinion. So the thing is, when Bede gets disowned by Chairman Rose, of course my first reaction is “You had it coming, you were being a shit.” But then Opal...takes him in? And...acts as though Oleana manipulated him? I guess I could perhaps see what they were going for here, and, I’ll admit it, I kind of adored their dynamic, albeit a short interaction between them. And I did find it rather cute at the League when he was all flustered about being trained by Opal, having to continue training because everyone was cheering for him. But the thing is...his arc is kind of...broken? Like, I want to feel bad for him, and I want to feel invested in Opal taking him in and showing him the ropes of the Fairy Gym but...it just doesn’t work like it should. Which is odd considering Bede gets considerably more time to flesh his arc than Marnie, at least, that’s how it seemed to me. I do think the general story and Hop’s own arc really just forced the writing’s hand in sweeping Bede’s arc by as fast as possible. He could’ve been an interesting diversion of expectation, but...oh well.
Speaking of gyms, how do I feel about the gym leaders?
Well, Milo is a fucking cinnamon roll, and I do think I’ve settled on shipping him with Nessa because...I mean...c’mon now. Short bean boy, toll ocean gal? Perfect for each other ♥
I don’t really...feel anything towards Kabu. His design is bland, his personality didn’t stick out to me at all, but I guess they can’t all be iconic gems when you think about it.
Then...there’s my baby boy Allister. And lawd, my dudes, if Hop ain’t my new son well then Allister sure as fuck is. I did HC that he was mute like Red before the game came out and, well, his personality and dialogue are pretty good despite not being what I was hoping. I mean, c’mon, how can you not love that adorable little face? Or that he’s so socially introverted he keeps a collection of masks to make absolute sure his face is hidden? I am going to be quoting “Crumbs, that’s aces” forever now.
Opal was an interesting woman, I definitely think there could’ve been more to her relationship with Bede but I already discussed that. My dad thought she was kinda scary and creepy but she reminds me of that old lady from Spirited Away so I ain’t bothered all that much lol. She was nice enough, I do like her humbleness and that she’s willing to admit it’s definitely time for her to call it quits. And yes, I have seen that official art of her when she was younger. She is a fucking QUEEN ♥ ♥ ♥
Then comes Melony...hoooo boy my lesbian ass is fallin’ so hard it physically hurts me in ways you will never imagine in your life. Wicke wishes she was this thicc. In all seriousness though, I am pretty curious about that son of hers. I heard you can meet him in Sword but I’ll have to wait and see that for myself. Aside from being the newest love of my life, she’s absolutely adorable and wholesome. I know her card reveres her as strict, but, she just looks like a cinnamon roll.
Piers...oh Piers, where do I even begin? His design is fucking on point, for one thing. And his relationship with his sister Marnie is just so cute and so much fun to watch. As unfortunately left field as it was for me, I did like his arc about not being a good Gym Leader and wanting his sister to take over for him. It was sweet and kinda sad but I just love him so much. For the first Dark Type Gym Leader, not bad guys, not bad at all. Also omg Piers slay me with your metal, king plsssss
Finally, there’s Raihan and...omg he’s so great. This mother fucker not only takes selfies in the middle of a match, not only bombards you with weather effects therefore making him a fun and challenging opponent, but this dude is also beefin’ with our head champ? SIGN ME UP, FAM. For real though, like, I loved battling with Raihan the most out of anybody that I fought. I definitely haven’t felt this much fun battling a Gym Leader in years. And I will forever be torn as to whether or not I want to ship him with Leon >3>
Speaking of the chadster, I ain’t talked about ‘im yet. Or Sonia, for that matter. Honestly, they’re both pretty great.
But Leon is the fuckin’ MVP this gen, I’ll tell you what. He’s such a bro he tells Rose his “Day of Destiny” bullshit can fuck off til our match is over. Of course, I do like his ditzy and dorky sides too. Like his snapback collection or how easily he gets lost seriously Leon it’s just a straight fucking line to your house how do you fuck that up. But he ain’t just a bro to the main character, naw, he a bro to his actual bro, Hop. And I fuckin’ love it. Their interactions are so investing and entertaining and wonderful to watch. It’s almost kind of magical, in a way. I think he is without a doubt my number one favorite Champion of all time now.
But as for Sonia, well, I dunno...maybe I’m nitpicky or remembering things wrong but she seemed to drop her disdain for researching the legend of the “Darkest Day” like a hat at some point. Granted, I still think her character arc while it wasn’t even needed was very well done. I loved listening to her dork out about the legends, her research, all of it. It was spectacular. And ever since I first found out she was childhood friends with Leon before the game even came out, ladies and gents, these two have dun been my OTP. The only one still challenging that notion is Raihan at this point, lol.
And now...we get to Oleana and Chairman Rose.
Oleana is just...kind of a nothing character for me, personally. Even after knowing about her Garbardor and all that, sorry fam, she ain’t doin’ it for me. She was a red herring so overblown and obvious it has since been laughable that anybody thought she was gonna be this gen’s Lusamine. She is just...some really crazy lady who happens to be passionate about her job. Ok.
Rose, however, is an absolute bastard. And I love it. However, I do have a problem with this, as it sort of connects to my earlier point with Bede. His relationship with Bede is...I don’t even know if I could call it a father-son relationship. I mean, yeah, he basically adopted him, but he disowns him at the drop of a hat. Granted, what Bede did was wrong, but...really? I guess that’s just how much of a dick he is, but, there’s no closure to that. Even after finding out what a horrible, deplorable man Rose is, Bede never talks to him after he’s disowned. Maybe this was meant to be a “Well it’s better he moves on to the next chapter of his life as soon as possible” sort of thing. But his sudden taking under Opal’s wing did not accomplish that feeling with me. So it feels sort of...hollow, to me. There’s no conclusion, follow-up, it’s almost as if Bede didn’t even know who Rose was anymore after Opal scooped him up. And yeah, Bede says “Everything has gone wrong since I met you” but...here’s the problem; That’s as much as he goes into being affected by Rose. It’s not too important, I guess, but it’s something that bothered me, personally. Rose’s motivations seem...ok, I guess. It’s about what I was expecting. Seriously though, his battle theme has no business being that good.
Those are all my thoughts on the characters, at least any that were all that worth talking about. Without further ado: Allow me to introduce y’all to my babies...
As I mentioned on Monday, my team consists of an Appletun, Centiskorch, Greedent, Hatterene, Inteleon, and an Eiscue. And I only just now realize like 5 out of 6 of them have names that start with a “C” lmao.
First up, we have my very first darling: Chastity
There’s a few things one should know about this slick little bitch:
Big shock, she was a huuuge cry baby as a Sobble. Like, mortified of pretty much everybody. Total mama’s girl. But as a Drizzile she was just a total grump goth binch. The only one of my Pokemon in my camp she would give the time of day is her dear friend Chariot, who at the time was a Hattrem. They pretty much grew up together and they’re besties now.
But now that Chastity is fully grown, well...she’s a little...flirtatious. Oh, no, not with the boys on her team. No no no. Every camp we step onto she’s just flirtin’ like a mad woman. She even managed to seduce my dad’s Cinderace who was already a huge playboy
Still, I can’t stay mad at this cute little brat. She’s still a total mama’s girl at heart and I love her to death. Btw, her Snipe Shot is ridiculously strong, though that’s probably because she’s still holding a Mystic Water haha
Up next is our resident lady in waiting: Chariot
I found Chariot in the Motostoke Outskirts and she has always been a picky snob even as a Hattena. She only ate small portions unless it was Whipped Cream Curry. Though nowadays I’m sure she only eats in such small portions to maintain her figure...
As I said before, she and Chastity have pretty much always been best friends. I definitely love to imagine her always hassling Chastity for her less than lady-like behavior though, haha. Chariot was weirdly sleepy as a Hattrem, though. Like...she dozed off a lot. She must’ve been getting plenty of beauty sleep for her evolution lol.
I used to have a Toxtricity on my team named Ripper before I found an Eiscue for the League, and she seemed quite enamored with him. At least for the long period he was with us, she talked to him 50% of the time when I stopped for a little break. It was incredibly adorable, though I fear what might happen if I leave them alone at a daycare for too long... <(⚆_⚆;)>
As a grown Hatterene, she’s rather dainty and conversative. I’m actually surprised, lately she’s starting to talk to some of her other fellow team mates lately. I suppose she’s not as stuck-up as she pretends to be, haha.
Up next we have our looonnnggg boy: Mushu
I picked up Mushu at Kabu’s gym. He was pretty shy as a tiny Sizzlipede and often avoided talking to most of his team mates. He was pretty spooked by a lot of them, actually, particularly Ripper for reasons I never quite understood. I guess when Ripper was still a baby, Mushu didn’t understand why he cried so much and was terrified of the loud noises he made lol.
However, he grew into a long boi rather quickly and he’s pulled us through some pretty tough spots in the gym challenges so I like to spoil him with lots of play time. He’s got a Jolly nature and honestly, it shows a lot more now that he’s all grown up. He loves to play and races with his team mates pretty much all the time. Rip Caramel, your utter annihilation will not be forgotten. He’s a very sweet and almost gentle boy and I honestly feel bad for all the battering he’s had to take before because I was a little too eager to take on opponents way out of my league.
A couple of fun facts about him before we move on:
His favorite curry in the curry dex is Smoked Tail Curry, which he always eats in gigantic portions. He freaking loves camping on Route 6 or in Stow-On-Side, I guess he really loves the heat.
Up next is my precious dumpling baby: Caramel
I first caught Caramel on Route 5, and I love love looove my baby apple pie. He’s such a chill and adorkable little dragon and I’m not one to pick favorites but...oh, who am I kidding? He’s totally my favorite.
As an Applin he was just too cute. He was a little slow and none of his team mates seemed to understand him so they tended to leave him by himself. So I ended up having to give him lots of attention so he wasn’t too lonely. And gosh was he just the cutest little baby apple. Of course, he wasn’t an Applin for very long, so there’s not much to speak of regarding his early stages.
However, once he evolved, he became a fucking tank. Caramel can take hits like a freaking champ and since I gave him Draco Meteor he’s practically an unstoppable beast. Of course, by heart, he’s a Lax boyo and enjoys the littlest things in life: Like the nice breezes in the Wild Area, or his Apple Curry, even if it’s snowing something fierce outside he’s all about it. And I just- argh he’s so fuckin’ cute! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Up next we’ve got the chunky cheeked baby: Peter Griffin Conker
Conker is a Gentle boy who’s been with me since the very beginning at Route 1, and it fits since objectively he’s probably the weakest Pokemon I’ve got on my team. But that’s ok, because he’s definitely scored us a couple of hard gym challenges just like Mushu has. He was definitely useful for buying some time when I needed it, that’s for sure.
He was pretty chattery as a Skwovet, even if some of his team mates weren’t all that talkative looking at you, Chastity. This probably comes as no surprise, but he’s always had a bottomless stomach. Seriously, he’s eaten large portions even as a baby Skwovet and it baffles me. Guess he’s just a really hungy boy, lol.
As a fully grown, chunky Greedent, he’s pretty slow. Like, really slow. Even when he runs it’s like a snail tracking through peanut butter and molasses. And it’s too cute to watch. I really wish I could give him belly rubs tbh, he looks like the type that’d enjoy those, haha. These days he’s best friends with my Eiscue, Cubert. They usually race each other after they have lunch.
And finally, one of my greatest MVP’s: Cubert
Cubert joined us very late in the game on Route 10. And while unfortunately he ended up taking Ripper’s place, I knew he’d be a good addition to the team. I’ve given him Hail and Aurora Veil, which is super useful for battle prep. It’s pretty lucky I was able to find this little guy waddlin’ around up there on my way to Wyndon.
As I said before, he was pretty anti-social with everybody at first. Though I’m sure that’s because he was so new by the time we got to the League. Thankfully, Conker got him out of his shell and they’re best friends. He still seems a little shy around the others, and even myself, but I’m just glad he’s got somebody to talk to. Not much to say about him unfortunately, since he’s so reserved and tends to keep to himself, but I’m sure that’ll change eventually with time.
Now that’s everyone that’s on my current team, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my boy Ripper at all, so, allow me to introduce an old friend who’s been livin’ in retirement for the past few days:
I first picked up Ripper at a Nursery while I was omw over to Hulburry, I believe. So Ripper was with us for a damn long time until I picked up Cubert. Initially I had hoped he’d be a High Key Toxtricity, but I’ll take what I get. Besides, he was more than helpful with quite a lot of battles, especially Opal’s gym.
He was pretty loud as a Toxel, which should come as no surprise. Always throwing tantrums and never really seemed to eat anything bigger than a small portion of whatever curry I cooked, so he was picky just like Chariot was. All around a bastard baby, really. He didn’t really start getting onto the battle field until he evolved, in all honesty.
But once he did, hoo boy, he was killin’ the competition like a pro. I feel pretty bad I didn’t take him into the League with me, but I felt like Cubert would’ve been more useful so I swapped ‘im out. I’ve been pulling him back out of the PC box for some more training lately to help him catch up to make up for it, though. And he seems pretty happy about it, so bygones are bygones I suppose.
And it seems he’s still very much taken with Chariot. Sigh, young love, so adorable. Anyways, respects to the OG madhouse that got me through some toughies, you did good out there buddy. ;w;
Alright, well, that’s just about all I have to discuss, for now. I hope this wasn’t too droning of a post or anything. But before you head out, I’ve got a little surprise. Since this was such an interesting experience, I’m opening a new Tumblr based on my journey that will follow my Trainer OC Luna and her adventures through Galar. If you’re curious to check it out, click here. I don’t really have an upload schedule, so just keep your eye out for any posts in the future. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Behind the Screams: Week Two
Bullet Hole
https://kaosis.news/bullethole-spotify
www.facebook.com/kaosis
“A Bullet Hole by any other Name”.
The release of Bullet Hole polarised listeners and media a like. Online alt media brand, Catatonic Youths, trolled us by mockingly looping the hook; while the songs premiere on Heavy Mag ended up doing over 44k views. Love it or Hate it, it’s a hook that sticks.
Bullet Hole was one of the first songs I wrote for the band and at this time Kaosis was a DJ act featuring myself on vocals, VIVIVI on guitar/ DJ’ing and our OG hype girl, Emma C aka Dilemma.
In true Kaosis fashion, our first gig that I had secured was at Rhythm and Vines. New Zealand’s biggest and longest standing New Years event. The booking took months of negotiation but in the end we got the gig. Not only did we get the gig but we were to play the headlining slot on the opening night. They call these the “Warm Up Parties” and these gigs are renowned for being the most frenetic of the festival. 10k kids turn up the night before the official lineups begin and set up camp. High on day one FOMO and having festival fresh livers the kids get bent beyond repair, normally at the expense of writing off the next day or two of official entertainment. A fitting platform to launch this hyperactive new metalstep three piece.
Leading into this event we needed to play a couple of warmup dates of our own. I hadn’t been on stage as a musician in about 7 years - gulp - and we needed to test drive the show before we went and played a major festival billing.
Despite having been booked at a top slot on the opening night of RnV, I struggled to get bookings in dance clubs with the extreme image and lack of show experience with the Kaosis brand. The only way we could secure bookings was to get a ringer act.
We found Jay Bulletproof, who is the godfather of Dubstep in Aotearoa. He help us out by taking lowball guarantees and I booked in a couple of shows.
The first show we ever played was at Raglan’s infamous Yott Club. The show packed out and was a success straight off the bat. However, I don’t think Jay really knew what he was in for. As he took the stage to a room of flogged out punters he’s said something to the effect of “I dunno what that was, electro juggalo dubstep? It was entertaining for sure”. The crowd were rinsed, looking for a place to recover from the insanity of the Kaosis set. Bewildered Jay took the stage wondering why on earth he took this booking. Chuckle chuckle.
After the show we were taking off our makeup at the hotel and a crew member said that he was going to go back and watch “Bullet Hole”, a faux pa on Jay’s stage name “Bulletproof”. Gavin, our sound man, blurted out, “Fuck that! Im rinsed, we fucked that show in the Bullet Hole”. The room cracked up at the grotesque and visceral statement. The band members and crew started chanting “Fuck you in the Bullet Hole”. Thus the name of the song was coined and the rest is history.
Music Video:
https://youtu.be/-q5O7S8Zrs0
The video that you have all seen is the second video we shot for this song. The first video was shot about 9 months previous and was an elaborate undertaking. The original video was shot on a 360 camera and was a first person perspective about a man abducting a woman in a revenge killing, only to be killed himself with a bullet to the head. You know general GA stuff. It was shot in two long single takes.
However, the technology really didn’t take off. I expected VR to be big, with people watching more content with goggles but it certainly did not.
Also by the time we came to releasing this single the lineup of the band had changed so significantly that I was the only musician left from the original lineup so it was weird to see the back ground band performance in the final scene. So I opted to reshoot. This first Bullet Hole video was also when I saw 0m3n’s potential to perform. She pulled out a spectacular performance as captive, soon she become a full member of the band.
The second take of the video was the last video we shot for the Hitech Lowlife album cycle, by this stage in the album roll out the priority was quick content. We booked the local hall and hung some grey sheets I got from a Warehouse bargain bin, placed a layer of painters drop sheets in front of that and boom we had a scene. I was under the impression we had the hall all night. But around 7pm, on our final wide shot, we had a congregation of Filipino church goers turn up ready to perform their weekly peace offerings to the grim overlord in the sky.
To their horror there was no God in the hall that night, just five undead demons and a hound straight from hell, screaming profanities and dancing like possessed apes.
Needless to say, I got a complaint letter from the hall admin the following Monday, the God Botherer’s claimed we were practising some kind of evil ritual in their sacred time slot. I had no response back when I claimed the same thing about the Christo’s. Chortle Chortle.
Inspirations for this tune were:
NWA, Cypress Hill, Excision, Body Count and The Prodigy. I really liked the Judgement Night soundtrack back in the day and this song reminds me of that era. Circa ’93.

SEASON 001, PART 002
** please note that if anyone drops from here on, they will not be removed from the show, simply considered npc **
On NOVEMBER 18, contestants are brought back in the studio for the first time since the first day of filming. they are instructed to sit in their initial ranking chairs. shortly after everybody is seated, bae siwoo makes his entrance. just like on october 7, he takes the time to converse with the trainees a bit before cameras officially start rolling. this time, he is accompanied by the coaches who have been teaching and monitoring the progress of the trainees during the past weeks.
after a short introduction for the camera, he moves on to the reason why everybody is gathered here; solos and positions. “we will begin with the girls!” he announces. “the choice wasn’t easy and some of you have surprised us while others have disappointed us.” those heavy words are marked by a short pause. “before we continue, do you want to hear the song?” he waits for the trainees’ reply before cuing the music and revealing the GIRL’S SOLO. after the short 30 seconds snippet, siwoo speaks again; “let’s reveal our top 3 girls...” the face of JUNG MISO appears on a wide screen; “first; number 6, jung miso. our child actress chanel jung, who’s catched the attention with her strong expression and visuals. next...” the screen splits and appears HUANG XIYU “second; number 9, huang xiyu. also known as alice, she’s the strongest dancer in the group and shows versatility with talent in singing and rapping. and last but not least...“ a third face appears on the face with them; KANG JINA. “third is kang jina. the only third year trainee of the lot. she’s definitely one of our strongest singers on the girl’s side. so who gets it? let’s see the result.” he points to the screen again and after a short moment of suspense, jung miso and huang xiyu disappear, leaving only KANG JINA. “Congratulations to kang jina! kim youngim and the trainers have noted that your skills match the solo very well. you might find a bit of challenge in the rap part, but we’ll look forward to the result.”
he gives everyone a chance to react to the announcement before all attention turns to the male trainees. “and now for the boys! before i proceed with the results, let’s make you wait a little longer by presenting the song…” he smiles mysteriously and the studio falls silent except for the 30 second preview of the BOY’S SOLO. “who will be the top three contenders?” right as he pauses, everyone can see KANG JUN’s face appear on the screens. “first; number 9, kang jun! a young trainee no doubt, but still a well-rounded competitor with high skill in singing, dancing and rapping. next is…” siwoo begins, letting the trainees see KANG YONGHWA appear on the screen with kang jun. “number 7, kang yonghwa! he’s no doubt one of the strongest dancers in this competition, but has been able to impress with his singing and performing skills. and finally…” attention is brought to the screen again, and right in the middle appears AHN JAESUN. “number 2, ahn jaesun. he’s trained the longest among everyone here and has been able to show the trainers it wasn’t in vain. a charismatic performer indeed, skilled in both singing and dancing. and now...” while everyone expects siwoo to announce the winner, a fourth face appears on the screen, shocking everyone. it’s LEE JIHO. “yes, number 10, lee jiho. trainers were supposed to choose only three contenders, but this young trainee impressed a lot as both a singer and performer. not to be underestimated. sadly, there’s no one else! while you four impressed these past weeks, only one of you can get this solo. the winner is…” there’s a deafening silence during which all eyes are glued to the screen showing the three boys. and suddenly, ahn jaesun, lee jiho and kang jun disappear. “KANG YONGHWA! congratulations. the trainers thought your image and skills fit the concept of the song very well. they hope this vocal challenge will push your limits even further. work hard, and we’ll see the results very soon.”
“while those results might be heaven for some of you and hell for others, this is not over. in a short moment you will receive lyrics distributions for the songs you’ve been practicing until now. we will reveal right away some crucial positions and final lineup. for the boys. AHN JAESUN is named overall leader of the LEGACY BOYS and GEUM DANBI of LEGACY GIRLS. we will trust you with overseeing rehearsals and making sure every performance is up to standard. TSAI KING is named face and center of the LEGACY BOYS and HIT while YAMADA HIMEKO will be the same of LEGACY GIRLS and ADIOS. your position doesn’t end with a song; you will be front and center of promotion materials for the group. Wait, why are you getting kicked off social security and state aid? 💕💕
Sorry for the late reply. This story is wild from start to end so hang on for the ride
Long story short, the original problem was that SS has to start counting my boyfriend and I as married, which like….no. They said they have to for two reasons (mostly because of reason one), but I do understand don’t get me wrong.
1. We signed for a timeshare together.
2. He put me as his beneficiary for his life insurance.
Now, let me explain.
I went into the timeshare thing (you know the usual like being shown this shit blah blah blah) being like nope we aint buying. (We had to go through it to get something we won or something which in the end was BS gift) We go into “Signing” room and I’m like nope, nada. But then everything just went…so wrong. Long story short, I’m obviously on disability for a reason ok. (I was granted both physical and mental but I won my case in five minutes because of my mental LOL). People who have mental illnesses, especially borderline personality disorder probably understand me on this one. Condo: I couldn’t get out, as hard as I tried. My boyfriend, he’s obviously my BOYFRIEND not my HUSBAND because he still don’t get it all (like my mum who is my representative in every aspect except the stupid payee which makes it “official”). So he like didn’t understand what he was doing was bad and my ques of like holy shit this needs to stop not like my momma. Finally I was like ok ok ok what the fuck ever but it’s your timeshare I want nothing of this, we break up its yours. Then they come back and say because of his credit he couldn’t. So then here we go I immediately feel guilt (without anyone having to say anything more) and my guilt problems cause me anxiety problems which causes me to do the stupidest shit on earth like my guilt problems are legit one of the beggist things i work on in therapy. So they assured me, If i put my name it’s like being a co-signer bleh bleh bleh. It’s in our contract that he pays. While signign they were even like you can read the contract later if you just wanna sign now. Like it was that fucked up.
The beneficiary whatever. Jonathan told me he had to put someone or that was his understanding and lemme telll you, im the only choice. I was assured it could be changed and this wasn’t permanent because I dont want that kinda commitment. I just idk I didn’t think anything of it and just thought i was helping someone because i have another problem with ovre-compassion as i call it lol.
So fast forward she tells me ight well we gotta count you as married. And I’m like WHAT NO I WILL LOSE EVERYTHING. and she omfg she’s like “well you don’t know that” and I’m like bitch…I know I’m right.
Well guess fucking what, yes I would lose everything. Even tho his money, his work, we aint sharing it it aint joint bank account wahbam, fuck me right.
Now, wouldn’t this be your first clue that you shouldn’t count as us married (one of first things I asked):
“Well, what if we break up!?” She then told me blah blah blah I have a year then i’m fucked. Then for like 1.5 hour we talked and at the end she got it, I was a blubbering mess. So she was like ok i aint promising anything because if someones doing this stuff, I put them as married end of story….but i’m gonna send you, your bf, and mom able to write statements blah blah.
Then as the end it was very lightly mentioned “Oh wait..you might no matter what lose stuff because it’s a resource” but it was said like no real concern. I then realized later hell fucking yeah it’s a concern.
So my mum and I are talking and I’m like this is bananas, it aint like oh man i signed on the dotted line and i regret it…it’s like I have a mental illness that makes it so sometimes uhmmmm I may act rash, or be influenced etc DUH. And then BAM. It just hit me.
A WEEK PRIOR I HAD LITERALLY BEEN IN A MENTAL HOSPITAL. Not 2 weeks, not 1.5 week but a WEEK. I was in there because I was on a medication that was making me plan out my suicide….I was released because the agreed I was safe enough to at least not KILL myself. Not because I was 100% off the med or 100% ok in the membrane. And then i had this vague memory that I signed this shtit leaving the hospital about how I’m not mentally capable of making any life decisions or something. (Their way of saving my ass I guess). I get a call back on monday about that if I did.
So my mom talked to this bomb ass lawyer and long story short I’m 99.9999999% sure I’m gettingout of this contract.
So ok that solves that problem. And considering again sign contract acting married wasn’t mentally 100% shouldn’t count for married either. And seeing how she was really believing me long story short….
No, I now don’t think I will lose everything.
I want to set the record straight tho, I just days ago thought I was losing
1. Social security income
2. Medicare
Then she said the state probably wouldn’t kick me off because they’re more leniant with “marriage” thing. But the resource thing oh man, then I would have also lost
1. I would have went from SS income to state income, but nope nevermind
2. medicaid gone.
So I would be worth $0 a month, and I mean I would have my parents insurance but I can’t afford that deductable and copay shit, and also Im gonna be 26 eventually. So that means I would be reliable on my boyfriend 100% (which like uhh our relationship is so up and down like no thank you I wanna be able to move out if I want/have to). And his income barely covers one person let alone two. (We did the math if we lost everything and we’d be lucky if we had $50 for the week after paying everything and that’s if we baby how much we spend for gas, food etc).
This would also mean I’d lose my medicaid appointment transportation which FYI my PT is an hour and 10 minutes away, but then again I couldn’t afford to go anyways to anything. As my convo with my driver went
“Damn, you wouldn’t even be able to work if they forced you….because of how many appointments you have.”
-me “You know now…they’ll say ‘well cause ya lost everything… youll have plenty of time now LOL”
-her: “And then you woudn’t even be able to work with your “free time” because you need your appoointments to function!”
-me: “EXACTLY”
So appointments, medications, treatments (Botox anymore? LOL RIGHT and I just got approved for Hetlioz look up that babies price MEGA LOL), affording my car/insurance, my apartment (can’t afford this place no more), internet (if I even could continue school), sadly my lovely rats, my income etc GOOOOONE.
So lets all pray to the gods of the disabled that my contract gets cancelled and I don’t lose everything and actually legit….die. LOL
I went from Wednesday facing the fact that I’m going to die, to friday holy shit I am saved god bless my borderline brain
So moral of the story is my mom is probably going to become my payee, and try to prevent me from getting emotionally influenced or emotionally rash into things, and now my boyfriend nows ques etc. He also obviously knows to NEVER do something like this again. I have also learned that I know I obviously have a brain that works differently and makes even the simpilest things hard, but I’m going to mention in therapy how I want to work on this and we can try to at least (if I can’t able to say no) make my ques known and obviously to jonathan. To talk more beforehand about things and plans, and also make trusted others know what I am ok with and am not.

(Sometimes, even I have trouble thinking up a general fun title. No real reason, just not connecting to that part of my brain today. Maybe, it’s something to do with that symbol above…)
This week our Monday Meeting crew were still talking about the impact of the Corona Virus (go figure), and generally letting off steam over the situation. We’re all trying to be responsible and self-isolate, wear masks and such, and social distance. So far, we’ve all been fortunate not to have been stricken ill, or to have lost loved ones.
There have been some effects across our various creative teams, but we’re doing what we can to help out. Our first developer “Town Hall” was so successful that we’re doing another set in a couple of weeks – just so our creators know they have a place to ask questions, vent, and really just to be connected and listened to.
For our core Onyx Path team, there’s been some self-care put together, with Eddy taking a couple of days off at the end of last week just to get a break from maneuvering in the virus situation, and this week Matthew needs extra time, so Eddy and Dixie are interviewing some of the Gehenna Gaming gang for the Onyx Pathcast. Which is a change they are flexible enough to make happen.

We sent the M20 Technocracy Reloaded Kickstarter over to WW for review. Once they give the OK, we’ll set a date – hopefully soon. They have their own issues with the pandemic over in Sweden, but right now are still approving what we send, so more hopes that everything remains good over there.
EDIT: Actually, as I was finishing up this blog, they got back to us with the OK! So the M20 Technocracy Reloaded Kickstarter will come online on Tuesday, April the 28th, at 2pm Eastern US time!
Related to that, Travis Legge is starting a Twitter game for M20 Technocracy Reloaded – as he says:
“And then like BOOM black suits fill the room up.”
I have the extreme honor and pleasure of bringing Technocracy Reloaded for Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary Edition to Twitch starting May 5th with Phil Brucato, Jacqueline Bryk, Hiromi Cota & TK Johnson
Don’t miss out! Head over to https://twitch.tv/theonyxpath, follow & subscribe.
Be seeing you.
That’s a very stellar cast of players, so this promises to be a real treat – while at the same time providing an in-depth look at the new book.
Plus, before that specific Actual Play series arrives, we have our usual great list of programs for many, many of our game settings being played which you can find below in the Blurbs!
During our meeting, we received word that DriveThruCards is back to being able to print PoD cards, which is great! Coincidentally, just before we heard that news, Eddy let us know that he heard that the Expedition card game is back in stock on the Expedition store! Since our own Scarred Lands is the theme of one of the supplements and allows players to add in SL creatures, treasure, and adventures, that’s great news and yet another option for a fun diversion.
You can get the cards via DTRPG as well, and I also hear they have online way for multi-player quests, so that’s even better these days!

As we find ways to enable our community to more easily play our games, the Onyx Dice Rolling App is live! Our dev team has been doing updates since we launched based on the excellent use-case comments by our community, and this thing is awesome! (Seriously, you need to roll 100 dice for Exalted? This app has you covered.)
Update: the devs are working on the updates for the roller in both Android and iOS; here is the rundown from them:
1) Redo the UI for system for Android. It will look the same as the current design. My goal is to have something ready by Saturday to send out to the Facebook users, asking them if this fixes the issues. This will be a beta type thing. This will break several of the fancy dice.
2) If the above worked out and the android users give all the clear, we’ll redo the graphics system to fix the fancy dice that got broken. We’ll do another Android beta through Facebook. This might take up to two weeks, as my schedule allows.
3) If everything worked well, we’ll release to Android for real at that point.
4) Port all of the existing stuff to iOS and release on that.

Traveling across the wasteland and dealing with all manner of beasties isn’t an easy job, but someone’s got to do it. Using their wits, their strength, and a whole lot of luck, they manage to tame, kill, and drive off creatures that threaten areas of newly built civilization.
Some highlights of Helnau’s Guide to Wasteland Beasties include:
• Details on some of the terrain and mutated animals you will find in the post-apocalyptic wasteland.
• Rules for presenting six distinct creatures in your series, and also for customizing your own.
• Stories about Helnau and her beast-hunting crew as they travel across deserts, through forests, and deal with some of the worst the wastelands have to offer.
This Wednesday also features the debut of Distant Worlds for Trinity Continuum: Aeon in PDF and PoD versions on DTRPG!
Distant Worlds expands the setting of Trinity Continuum: Aeon with new worlds, new alien mysteries, and rules for playing actual aliens, the secretive telepathic Qin.
Distant Worlds requires both Trinity Continuum: Aeon and the Trinity Continuum Corebook to play. Inside, you will find:
Further information about the eight extrasolar worlds described in Trinity Continuum: Aeon, including new dangers and new opportunities for adventure.
Detailed write-ups of 10 new planets, including one that is home to a recently contacted intelligent alien species.
New technologies for interstellar travel and colonization, as well as a wealth of new devices created by aliens, and new Edges and Paths specifically for interstellar explorers and settlers.
The secrets of humanity’s alien allies, the mysterious Qin. This section includes descriptions of four Qin interstellar colonies as well as rules for creating and playing Qin characters and for designing and using custom-made Qin biosuits.

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!
20 years ago today, White Wolf launched the New Bremen DigiChat environment. A persistent online setting with hundreds of people online at any given time, it was an early success in playing RPGs with others over the Internet. As Impish Ian Watson sez:
“It was fun in the sense that it was all the wildest WoD stories in one place. When, during V20 development, Vampire players talked about some of their favourite memories happening when they botched? That was NB every day. It was frankly ridiculous and I burned out pretty hard, but I look back on it fondly.”

November has been what feels like both the longest and shortest month of my year. This month was even more filled with school assignments- four research papers due the first week in December- and related things. I fortunately had some really fun experiences with my friends and family this month. I plan on doing a If We Were Having Coffee: The Fall Semester edition in December, filling you on some in real-life happenings of mine over these past few months- and some very exciting things planned for the new year!
Returning to bookish and fangirl things, I’ve so far read 5 books this month while still completing Schitt’s Creek. Given how crazy school life was in November, I’m both content with the amount of books that I read and wish that I had read more. With my winter break approaching, I’m really excited to have more time to unwind and dedicate to reading and blogging next month.
All-American Muslim Girlby Nadine Jolie Courtney | 4.5-/5 Stars
All-American Muslim Girlwas my surprise favorite and a new contemporary favorite for me this month. It took me some time to settle in, but I absolutely adored the character development and emphasis on family and faith.
When the Stars Lead to You by Ronni Davis | 3/5
When the Stars Lead to Youwas unfortunately my most disappointing read of the month. While I appreciated that it handled some heavy issues, I wasn’t a fan of its execution.
The Toll (Arc of a Scythe #3)by Neal Shusterman | 5/5
I am here to admit that I definitely neglected those four school research projects for a few hours at a time this month to dive into the 625 page beast that was Neal Shusterman’s The Toll. And it was worth it!
Renegades by Marissa Meyer | 5/5
I officially cannot believe that it took me over two years to pick up Marissa Meyer’s Renegades because I loved it so much!
The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren | 4/5
I finally read The Unhoneymooners! This was such a fun and flirty read and would make for the perfect one-sitting read over your holiday break.
Schist’s Creek S2-S5 (PopTV/Netflix) – Schitt’s Creek was the best kind of stress relief this month. I’ve completely fallen in love with this show, and while I’m sad that I’m all caught up, I cannot wait to dive into its final season come January.
Let It Snow (Netflix)- The third weekend in November officially marked the start of my Christmas-celebrating this year, starting with the Netflix of adaptation of Let It Snow, Although there was a number of changes from the book (it’s been a while since I’ve read it, but I had it next to me while watching), I thought this was a really cute Christmas movie and brought the book’s spirit to life. I’m so excited that Netflix is acquiring more and more YA titles!
Holiday in the Wild (Netflix)- After an especially long week, I collapsed into bed one Thursday night and unwinded in the best way possible: with a Christmas movie! My inner Leslie Knope had to watch this Christmas movie starring Rob Lowe aka Chris Trager and Kristin Davis. Holiday in the Wild is definitely the cheesiest Christmas movie I’ve watched this far, but I still really enjoyed its humor and atmosphere.
Last Christmas– It’s been such a long time that I’ve seen a Christmas film in the movie theater, so add in Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding and I was sold on Last Christmas. Last Christmaswas definitely one step up form a Hallmark Christmas movie, but I enjoyed its lightheartedness and cast.
Encore! (Disney+)- While, yes, I had time to watch four seasons of a TV show this month and read a 625 page book, I haven’t dived into Disney+ too much yet. However, one show that I’ve been hooked on each week is Encore!. With a touch of reality TV show, I do appreciate its somewhat seriousness, as high school alumni reunite to recreate the musicals they put on as students.
Noelle (Disney+)- I’ve unfortunately been spending some of my Thanksgiving break working on final papers, but I distressed after a long Monday of paper writing by watching Noelle. While it was a tiny bit more fluffy than I was expecting, I still loved the cast and there were plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.

Since I’ll be talking about some IRL stuff in my If We Were Having Coffee post next month, I’m just going to be focusing on some bookish and fangirl happenings that caught my attention.
Taylor Swift at the AMAs- If there was one reason that I had to watch the American Music Awards this year, it was Taylor Swift’s Artist of the Decade performance. I absolutely loved how she started the performance with “The Man” and I loved all the songs that she chose. I am also obsessed with the “Lover” First Dance remix. I’m really hoping that she will announce more Lover Fest tour dates soon.
youtube
Brooklyn Nine-Nine Updates- Brooklyn Nine-Nine will be returning to NBC for its seventh season with an hour-long episode on February 7th. Even though S6 wasn’t my absolute favorite season, I’m still so excited to be diving back into this show that gives me some Parks and Rec feels. It was also announced that B99 was renewed for an eighth season– which I think calls for another Lin-Manuel Miranda guest appearance!
The Elementae series on hold– A.C. Gaughen replied to a reader on Twitter that there are currently no plans for books 3 and 4 to be published in her Elementae series. I’m so especially bummed over this news because I love Reign the Earth and Imprison the Sky so much.
Unfortunately, currently there are no plans to publish books three and four in the series. 😞 Im so sorry for readers left in the lurch, but the series hasn’t gotten the traction it needed to survive. 😩😩😩 https://t.co/earzn0fqwr

Nicki Minaj isn’t UPSET about her album being number 2 behind Travis Scott, she just wants to punch him in the face.
But don’t twist things, that does not mean she’s upset.
Nicki Minaj appeared on the Ellen Degeneres show on Monday and opened up about all the drama with Travis Scott after her album Queen took the number two slot while his album Astroworld slid to number one.
When all of this went down, Nicki was shading Kylie Jenner for Travis getting more album sales saying on twitter QUOTE, “put my blood sweat & tears in writing a dope album only for Travis Scott to have Kylie Jenner post a tour pass telling ppl to come see her & Stormi. lol. Im actually laughing.”
She told Ellen QUOTE, “The thing is, it’s not anger, it’s what’s right and what’s wrong and what’s fair. I’ve had a number two album and I never cared. It’s just that when you have a number two album to someone who is selling shirts and merch, and selling passes for a tour that’s not even announced yet, it feels like you’re being tricked.”
What she’s referring to is that in the days leading up to Astroworld’s release, Travis Scott dropped a new item of merch on his website. What wasn’t made clear is that every item of merch he sold also came with a digital copy of his album. In reference to that, Nicki tweeted QUOTE, “Travis sold over 50K of these with no requirement of redeeming the album!” Which, to be fair to Nicki, is enough to push his album past Queen. According to Billboard, Nicki’s album sold 185,000 units while Scott sold 205,000.
Now it’s not like this merch+album deal is new to Nicki. She ALSO sold merch associated with Queen. She just didn’t do the 9 days leading up to the album like Travis did. She also didn’t partner with Louis Vuitton and Off-White to make her merch. So logically it makes sense why Travis sold more units than Nicki did, but that won’t stop her from speaking out about the injustice according to her.
She continued telling Ellen QUOTE, “I don’t like being bullied and I don’t like being taken advantage of and sometimes people use scare tactics against you because especially as a black woman, people will call you ‘angry’ or ‘bitter.’ So now it’s almost like we’re not allowed to defend ourselves or stand up for ourselves, and I’m not going to have that.”

Trump bows to pressure, lowers flags again to honour John McCain
The country's biggest veterans services organisation, the American Legion, demanded President Trump issue a proclamation honouring McCain and order the nation's flags to be flown at half-mast.
The White House flag will remain at half-mast until John McCain is buried. Photo: AP "Mr. President, just this year, you released presidential proclamations noting the deaths of Barbara Bush and Billy Graham, American Legion National Commander Denise Rohan said in a public letter. Sen. McCain was an American hero and cherished member of The American Legion. "As Im certain you are aware, he served five and a half years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam and retired from the U.S. Navy at the rank of Captain. He then served in the U.S. Congress for more than three decades. Rather than an official proclamation, Trump issued a tweet following McCain's death, saying: "My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!" McCain died of brain canceron Saturday US time, aged 81. In a statement on Monday afternoon, Trump said: Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCains service to our country and, in his honour, have signed a proclamation to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff until the day of his interment".
Rather than an official proclamation, President Donald Trump issued a tweet following McCain's death. Photo: Bloomberg He added that his chief-of-staff John Kelly, vice president Mike Pence and national security adviser John Bolton would attend the funeral. Despite being members of the same party, McCain was a strident critic of Trump's behaviour as a presidential candidateand since he took office. While McCain invited former presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama to deliver speeches at his funeral, Trump was not invited to attend the service, which will be held on Saturday. Loading During the 2016 election campaign, Trump questioned McCain's status as a war hero by saying: "He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured." When Trump signed into a military spending bill named after McCain earlier this month, he declined to mention the senator in his remarks. The Washington Post reported on Monday that Trump rejected a proposed statement that would have praised McCain for his military service and described him as a "hero". John Kelly, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and other staffers reportedly advocated for such a statement, but were over-ruled by the President. Loading In his farewell statement issued on Monday McCain said: "We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe. "We weaken it when we hide behind walls, rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideals, rather than trust them to be the great force for change they have always been." He continued: "Do not despair of our present difficulties but believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here. Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history." https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/world/north-america/trump-bows-to-pressure-lowers-flags-again-to-honour-john-mccain-20180828-p5005q.html?ref=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_source=rss_feed

Baltimore mother seeks justice years after son was killed by police
Years before Black Lives Matter, cases like Kevin Coopers vanished into obscurity now theres hope for police reform, if it can survive the Trump administration
Greta Carter-Willis has spent a lot of time praying, crying and thinking at the threshold between the kitchen and dining room of her south-west Baltimore home.
It was at that spot, nearly eleven years ago that a Baltimore City police officer, barely a year out of the academy, shot and killed her 14-year-old son Kevin Cooper.
His body was laying right there, she said, gesturing. We can make little changes, paint, take the carpet up, but it still remains the same. I have to live with that mental vision in my mind all my life This is my home, I cant just up and move.
It was the sense of pain and injustice around that incident that brought Carter-Willis to the Baltimore federal courthouse on Thursday, to speak in favor of the agreement negotiated between the city, its police force, and the Department of Justice in the wake of the Freddie Gray case. The future of the agreement to reform the citys policing, known as a consent decree, was thrown into uncertainty Monday after attorney general Jeff Sessions released a memo asking to halt its implementation against the wishes of the city mayor, police commissioner and general public.
Despite a cold, driving rain, dozens of residents lined up for their three minutes to address the federal judge in the case and implore him not to delay the agreement, as the Trump administration requested earlier this week. Speakers represented faith groups, high school students, non-profits, law-enforcement and like Carter-Willis, mothers of those killed by police. And despite their disparate backgrounds, the overarching position of the city was clear: Justice delayed is justice denied, as more than one speaker quoted from the Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr.
It was a must that I push my way down to that courthouse and let that federal judge know, please do not hold this consent decree, Carter-Willis told the Guardian. Its too late for my son, but it will help somebody elses child and it will make it better for the next generation and its a right step for this department. Its a right step for this city to have them be accountable to another agency. Because as long as theyre policing themselves, its not gonna get any better.
Late Friday, a federal judge agreed with Carter-Willis and the others who trudged out to throw their weight behind the agreement, tossing out Sessions request for more time. Still, the saga clearly indicates that project of cultivating progressive reform in police departments nationwide no longer has an eager partner in Washington DC.

It was just a plastic dustpan
As is the case in many fatal police incidents, it was Carter-Willis herself who called 911 in 2006, hoping for some assistance as her son experienced an emotional disturbance. He had knocked over his TV during an argument, and tossed some clothes out the window. Normal teenager stuff, as Carter-Willis described it.
After a short chat with officers the situation had resolved enough that one of the responding officers left. The second, Roderick Mitter, stayed behind to finish up paperwork when tensions ratcheted back up.
The officer walked past and Kevin was mumbling, Carter-Willis said. The officer asks him what are you saying and he says Im not talking to you so he just kept walking.
As Carter-Willis tells it, the officer began following the teen through different rooms, jawing with the teen as both grew more and more agitated. She recalls asking the officer several times to leave her home.
In the kitchen, as the rankling grew louder, Cooper picked up a plastic dustpan. The kind you get at the 99 cent store, Carter-Willis said.
Her version and the police version begin to diverge here. Carter-Willis says her son was merely holding the dustpan; police say he assaulted the officer with it, breaking it over his head and lunging at him with the jagged plastic.
In either case what happened next is clear. Mitter maced Kevin, deemed it ineffective, drew his gun, and fired. The bullet, which penetrated the teens heart, likely killed him instantly, Carter-Willis would later learn.
From there, the aftermath was predictable. Police held a press conference that day and declared the shooting justified. The officer was not charged with a crime, and has since been promoted to detective. The city offered Carter-Willis a pittance of a settlement in a civil case that her family ultimately lost to the citys well-resourced lawyers. Years before Mike Brown and the rise of Black Lives Matter, cases like this often vanished into obscurity without attracting protests, headlines, national attention or trending hashtags.
They just discarded him like a bag of trash, like his life meant nothing, said Carter-Willis. But his life did mean something. It meant something to me, to the community. He was an uncle, a neighbor, a classmate.

Grave concerns
Carter-Willis keeps a hatbox in her home jammed with press clippings, important documents and pictures related to her sons case. Among them, the full DOJs 2016 findings on the Baltimore Police Department (BPD).
The report found broadly, a pattern or practice of unconstitutional conduct by city police, characterized by rank racial bias and warrantless targeting of black residents.
When the DoJ report came out, i started crying, Carter-Willis said. I felt vindicated with that report because you had outside ears, you had outside eyes to understand that what [black residents] are saying is really happening.
They werent talking about Kevin, she added, but they were.
In conjunction with that report the Obama DoJ, the city of Baltimore and its police department entered into negotiation for a consent decree, or a joint reform agreement enforceable by a federal judge. Similar agreements had been utilized in other problem departments like Los Angeles, New Orleans and Detroit to achieve reform after systemic use of force or discrimination issues were discovered. That agreement had already been signed by all parties before the Obama DoJ left power and was awaiting a public comment before it would, in all likelihood, have gone into effect later this year.
Enter the Trump Administration. Trump campaigned on a platform opposing virtually any scrutiny of law enforcement, and selected an attorney general in Jeff Sessions who most expected to embrace the same. Earlier this week, Sessions made good on that expectation, filing a memo to the Baltimore court charged with enforcing the consent decree there, asking for a 90-day pause to review and assess the agreement. The DoJ also asked the judge to postpone Thursdays public hearing, a request that was denied, setting the stage for Carter-Willis and nearly 50 other Baltimoreans to weigh in before the court.
John Gore, the head of the civil rights division for the DoJ, had a lonely job Thursday. Of the dozens of speakers, he was the only person to express any interest in slowing down or potentially not following through on the agreement, citing grave concerns.
Those concerns were not shared by Baltimore mayor Catherine Pugh or police commissioner Kevin Davis, both of whom pledged to move ahead with the reforms with or without the DoJ. Both lamented however, that the speed of the roll-out and the public trust would both be hampered without federal involvement.
Paradoxically, Sessions was arguing that the federal government had no place in telling local law enforcement how to reform, and simultaneously, telling the officials in Baltimore that they were wrong about the path they laid out with the Obama administration in negotiating the consent decree. Gores concerns were also not shared by any of the public who showed up to comment. Indeed the handful of voices who didnt support the consent decree at the public hearing did so because they found it not strong enough.
All this paperwork and all this stuff yall doing is just so they can get federal money to keep on doing what they are doing, said Marcella Hill with her voice breaking. Like Carter-Willis, Hills son was shot and killed by BPD. Nothing is going to change the attitude and the personality of [the police] until someone goes to jail.
The many fractures
On Friday, Justice James Bredar approved the agreement over the objections of the Department of Justice. It would be extraordinary for the court to permit one side to unilaterally amend an agreement already jointly reached and signed, the judge wrote. Now it is time to enter the decree and thereby require all involved to get to work on repairing the many fractures so poignantly revealed by the record.
Thats good news for advocates who want to see police reform initiatives struck in the Obama era survive the Trump administration. Many saw the DoJs attempt to wriggle out of the Baltimore consent decree as a trial balloon for trying to back out of older agreements that are already in place with other cities. But in what has become a minor theme of the Trump presidency, its possible, if not likely, that federal judge rulings like Bredars will stymie future attempts in place.
Generally speaking, to modify a consent decree you have to demonstrate that circumstances have changed, so I think a lot of judges are going to be skeptical if DoJ says Weve completed this review and turns out everything is fine in these departments, said Christy Lopez, a former DoJ official during the Obama administration and the leader of the team that produced the departments investigation into the Ferguson Police Department.
It may not be that blatant or easy but what this does signal, is that when monitors come in and say Hey, [the police department] is not there yet or Hey, they need to do this to make this thing work, DoJ is not going to have their back on that. DoJ is not going to be on the side of reform any more. And that can have a tremendous influence, Lopez told the Guardian.
Sessions has claimed that his department remains committed to reform in Baltimore and elsewhere, but the language used in the memo explicitly questions the role of the federal government in that reform, and seems to question the premise that many of the reforms rest on that systemic discrimination is endemic to certain departments.
The misdeeds of individual bad actors should not impugn or undermine the legitimate and honorable work that law enforcement officers and agencies perform in keeping American communities safe, the Sessions memo from Monday reads.
If they want to talk about actions of a few bad apples, then yes, it is clear that some police officers are more likely to use force and much more likely to commit misconduct than others, said Sam Sinyangwe, an activist and data scientist with Campaign Zero. Almost never are they held accountable though. We need to put in place systems and structures that can ensure accountability, and those are the types of things that these consent decrees are trying to produce, and that are now being undermined.
As for Carter-Willis, shes just glad judge Bredar heard her appeal and decided to move ahead. It would restore my trust, she paused, somewhat But im still going to be vigilant. Im still always going to be watching. Im still keeping an eye on them not just for my grandchildren, but for my great-grandchildren.

WASHINGTON The Trump administration detained more than 680 immigrants last week in a series of raids around the country, Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said Monday.
Kelly said the targeted enforcement operations the government seldom uses the word raids took place in the Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, San Antonio and New York City areas. About 75 percent of the immigrants arrested had been convicted of a crime, although the government did not release a full breakdown of what those crimes were, or how many were related solely to immigration.
Kelly repeated Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials claim that the arrests were routine. But immigrant rights advocates say there has been a clear uptick in enforcement activities, and that President Donald Trumpis following through on new deportation standards that put nearly every undocumented immigrantat greater risk.
On Monday, the president referenced his pledge to crack down on unauthorized immigration.
Were getting them out, and thats what I said I would do, Trump said in a press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, referring to hardened criminals arrested by ICE. Im just doing what I said I would do when we won by a very, very large electoral college vote.
Trump went on to say that he had promised to get the bad ones … and thats exactly what were doing.
I think that in the end, everyone is going to be extremely happy, and I will tell you right now, a lot of people are very, very happy right now, he said.
Kelly said Trump has been clear that deporting undocumented immigrants is a critical mission of the DHS, with a specific focus on those who pose a threat to public safety, have been charged with criminal offenses, have committed immigration violations or have been deported and re-entered the country illegally.
Immigrant rights advocates said ICE picked up some individuals who had not been the target of the raids, although they are still determining details of what happened.
They also rejected the idea that ICE was acting no differently under Trump than it did under former President Barack Obama. The previous president set a narrower standard for who would be a priority for deportation.
Its a horrific overreach that will separate families, destroy lives and undermine the American dream for U.S. citizen children and immigrants alike, Sulma Arias of the Center for Community Change and Fair Immigration Reform Movement said on a call with reporters earlier Monday.
Most of these people are not a threat, she added. Those with no convictions are being picked up, most are for minor crimes. The deportation punishment is mean and vindictive and un-American.
ICE officials said in a statement that the agency does not conduct sweeps, checkpoints or raids that target aliens indiscriminately. They added that some of the people arrested will be prosecuted for illegally re-entering the country after being deported, while others will be deported or go through removal proceedings. The agency acknowledged that some of the people arrested may not have been the target of the enforcement operations, and said ICE sometimes encounters additional suspects and evaluates them for arrest on a case-by-case basis.
Reports of ICE checkpoints and sweeps are false, dangerous and irresponsible, officials said in the statement. These reports create panic and put communities and law enforcement personnel in unnecessary danger. Any groups falsely reporting such activities are doing a disservice to those they claim to support.
This article has been updated with comments from ICE officials.
