Peculiar Experiment

Sebastian was going around Hadal Blacksite to find more data and information to blackmail Hadal Blacksite or send the information to rival companies. 

He was currently in a room that had a large window. On the other side of the window was pure water, nothing else. As he was searching through the many desks in the room, he saw in the corner of his eyes something through the window, but when he blinked, it was gone. 

Sebastian thought it was his eyes messing with him and chalked it up to him being blinded by the flashed beacon so many times by multiple inmates who walked into his shop.

As Sebastian continued into another room with another huge window, he found some items to sell to the inmates. He doesn’t actively seek to discover them. He just ends up finding them by accident and decides to make good use of them by trading. 

He saw the figure again, but he couldn’t identify the figure due to the room being dark. 

At first glance from afar, it looked like it was a normal height. However, as the shadow figure drew closer to the glass, Sebastian realized that this unknown monster was not normal in height. He is 10 '6", and somehow that monster was much taller than him!?

Sebastian tried to figure out who exactly this monster was. Until the creature punched their hand through the window. Water started flowing into the hole rapidly, filling the room quickly with water.

Sebastian jumped from the sudden movement and glass shattering. He immediately grabbed whatever he could and slithered out of the room.

The monster saw Sebastian slithering away and wanted to catch up to him. With that, the creature kept breaking the window until they fell into the room. The creature immediately recovered from the impact and started to chase after Sebastian.

Sebastian saw the figure closing up on him somehow, even though he had a whole head start. 

He shouted in an enraged tone to hide the fear that was starting to settle in him, “WHO ARE YOU!? GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME!!”

He soon reached a room that shut the door behind him. He was trying to shake off the feeling of panic but then heard the noise of rustling behind some desks.

He immediately took out a flashlight he had picked up earlier and pointed toward where the desks that the sound was coming from.

“SHOW YOURSEL-”

Before Sebastian could fully finish his sentence, the same creature jumped towards him. 

The creature was hugging him?? He thought he would surely get killed or something since he was to be killed on sight by Hadal Blacksite.

“I never thought I’d find another specimen like me! Although you are quite small and slow.”

Once the unknown creature let him go, Sebastian got a better look when the creature pulled their anglerfish light, making the room light up a bit. This creature was almost similar to him. They had fin-like ears, a sea snake-shaped body, and a large and long tail. There were some differences. They had a third eye, but on their left side (his eye is on his right side), claw-like hand, but they have 5 fingers (while he has 4). 

But the major difference was the height and speed. They were 17 '3" and extremely fast. You had somehow gotten in the room when the door had closed only a few seconds after he entered. 

“Im specimen Z-##, but my real name is (Y/n)(L/n)”

Ah, now he remembers, he found your folder of what happened to you a few days ago while looking around.

You were an LR-P, or in other words, a low-ranked prisoner who's kept in their cells unless they are called upon for experiments. The experiments would often be dangerous or deadly. You were part of the experiment to give humans gills, just like Sebastian, mixing your DNA with other DNA strands from multiple different sea creatures. After the experiment was a success, you were still an LR-P and sent back to your cell. That was until the lockdown was caused, and you escaped your cell after someone unlocked the doors.

When Sebastian finally got out of his daze and replied, “I didn't expect to do sudden introductions out of my shop today. But since you didn’t kill me, I guess there’s no harm. I'm Sebastian or Z-13, to be exact.”

You continued to talk to him while he continued to collect stuff while heading back to his shop.

“Why are you collecting these folders filled with data from others? It’s not like we can undo what they did to us.” You asked him.

“If I can get enough information, then I can sell these to rival companies or, better yet, blackmail this hellhole of a company.” He spat out the last part with venom in his voice.

After spending time with him, you decided to help Sebastian with his goal if it meant stopping these horrible experiments on other people. 

A couple of months go by, and you slowly start to have feelings for Sebastian. Even if he is snarky, unpredictable, and sometimes violent, he does lend a hand to the inmates who come to his shop. He’s respectful to those who also respect him. This includes you too, since you help out a lot, it helps him have more time to try to reach his goals.

When inmates would disrespect you, whether it be making rude comments about your looks, how tall you are, or using their flash beacon on you. Sebastian would charge the inmates more than usual, or sometimes he would take the flash beacon from them if they bought it from him, or he would defend you by making sneaky comments or mocking them.

You want to tell him how you feel towards him, but you don't want to mess up the friendship that you have with him.

It was another day or night, you couldn’t tell, but it was quiet today. No inmates were coming into the shop today. How rare. Not even the other monsters were making noise like they usually do when there are inmates in the halls.

You let out a sigh of boredom and stretch yourself out a bit, “Did they run out of prisoners to send down here or something?”

“Probably, I mean no one has gotten the crystal yet,” Sebastian said as he pulled on his anglerfish lure to light up the small room.

It was silent for a few minutes before Sebastian spoke again, “Since it seems no one is coming to the shop today. I would like to tell you something.”

Now that grabbed your interest, “Yea? What is it?”

It was silent for a few seconds again before he looked up at you, “I'm going to get straight to the point, I like you and want to be in a relationship with you.”

Well, that wasn't what you expected, but he is unpredictable at times, so you couldn't blame him for that.

“..You couldn’t have been more, you know, romantic? But I do feel the same way about you.” You teased him for his straight forwardness.

“Well there’s nothing romantic I could get from down here, so I might as well do it when no one is here,” Sebastian answers you.

You end up moving towards him, cuddling him. The two of you looked at each other before you leaned down toward him and kissed each other. 

Bonus!

While you and Sebastian were too busy kissing, you two didn't hear someone crawling through the vents.

“Um? What the fuck!? Do that somewhere else other than in the shop man.” 

You pulled away immediately, Sebastian was irritated by the person's comment and their rudeness.

Sebastian whacked the poor inmate back through the vent with his tail. The inmate was thrown out, and since the room on the other side had a big pothole with what seemed an endless bottom, they tragically died.

“...Sebastian…. You know what, just this once I won't scold you for doing that.” You sighed in disbelief while Sebastian had a plastered smirk on his face.

QUICK YAP SESH: Location of Gravesfield from The Owl House

so uhm, while I am finishing the rest other art things I did decide at like 3 am to find the supposed "actual" location of Gravesfield. At least, what town would most likely be Gravesfield if it were real.

I used a lot of info from the wiki and that cool official Gravesfield Website Mock-Up that John Bailey Owen posted. (this thing in case no one knows what im talking about)

Anyways to get started, here's this poorly done thing i made in google draw lol, hopefully you can actually read some of it oof. Its color coded to the info below:

Firstly, I do find it interesting how Conneticut was actually the FIRST colony with a relatively large witch panic in the American colonies, happening 40 years before the infamous Salem Witch Trials.

To start off I think the most poorly backed-up possibility is Hamden.

The reason im suggesting Hamden is because it is Dana's hometown and she said she has taken a lot of major inspiration from it. Like churches and graveyards.

However, the reason I'm not drawn to it is because not only was it founded 1786, way over a decade Gravesfield was said to be founded, I also couldn't find too much about Hamden having Witch trials, but if they did it definitely wasn't as big as Wethersfield's or Hartford.

Now I'm basically stuck between Litchfield and Wethersfield.

Litchfield:

Litchfield I was drawn to because of its name really. It means Field of Corpses and that's basically the same thing as Gravesfield lol. On top of that, it also holds the county seat of Litchfield County, something Gravesfield supposedly is as well. (In modern day context of course.)

Also Gravesfield was said to be along Conneticut Route 109, putting right along either Washington pr Litchfield (which J. B. Owen said was probably false on the Washington part but at the same time he uses an image of Washington's river as stated below)

The thing is though, like Hamden it wasnt founded until the 18th century, and there was no witch trial things that i could find. :/

Which then led me to Wethersfield:

Now Wethersfield is WAY more appropriate in both time, setting, and history. Wethersfield was one of the first colonies to be pop-up around the correct time for the Wittebane brothers to arrive in Connecticut. Wethersfield was founded in 1633-34 and Gravesfield in 1635 (Mind the brothers were said to arrive in 1613 I think it was, either this was a continuity error or they were among the very first settlers in Gravesfield.)

Random but it was also called Watertowne before it was changed to Wethersfield.

Anyways, In the Mock-up website we can see at the top, a banner picture of a winding river. Now i did google search this image and it is actually Washington Ct, womp womp, but I think it could actually be pointing to another more prominent river in Connecticut and that's the actual Connecticut River, which Wethersfield is conveniently placed right next to.

Now lets look at a map of Wethersfield:

river, check check, and HOLY SHIT THAT COULD BE THE FLOODED GRAVEYARD LOL (where i circled) Sadly, Its not actually, but it shows how similiar the geography possibly is.

I think last and most importantly however is the fact that Wethersfield is known to have some of the earliest of the witch trials in Connecticut at the time. (There were 9 documented accusations and only 3 executions, one of which was a woman who openly admitted to using to witch craft, Mary Johnson, and a married couple name Joan and John Carrington.) This goes very well with the whole Witch Hunting thing.

Lastly I think the cherry on top would be that they both just look incredibly similar lol:

Also fun fact, If the Wittebane brothers did actually arrive in 1613~ they would have been among the Dutch settlers rather than the British, whom were the ones to found Wethersfield. Take that information how you will but I am certainly going to make some kind of headcannon out of it lol

so! what, in your opinion, are vhaerauns most PROMINENT traits (ie whats most obvious in how he acts+interacts) and what are vhaerauns most IMPORTANT traits (core defining aspects that influence his decisions+behaviors and how he approaches relationships)?

often times theres overlap there, but i get the impression vhaeraun keeps a lot close to his chest. and as a bonus followup: are there any differences with those two between Vhaeraun-as-Person and Vhaeraun-as-Deity

Post write-up edit: Sorry ahead of time. This ended up being Very, very long. 6k words... a lot of it is transcription from the novels and guidebooks though. If you want the TL;DR of my thoughts I summarize everything at the end, but all the dirty details are in the middle.

Also late edit: Thank @abracadav-r for digging up a lot of these screenshots while I went crazy on the write up. They were a MASSIVE help getting all the information I needed to cite in order.

Okay so. Three things right off the bat before I get into this.

This is something that I feel like goes without saying when I talk about these things, but I always feel the need to add a disclaimer on just in case one of these posts escape containment. A lot of these thoughts are going to be conclusions that I have come to about this character based on the evidence we're given canonically. Given that it's my opinion, I don't want to imply that it's the only way to interpret this character and in fact I think the charm of DND and the various characters within it is that they're little tools you can use to best shape the narrative you're trying to tell.

As such, I'm going to be trying to make it clear when something is "This is a presumption I have made based on evidence." And "This is just plain-spoken canon" and generally speaking, I will try and cite directly what I've pulled from.

Now. Related to that first point. I'm going to be pulling from Evermeet: Island of Elves the novel. The thing about Evermeet is that the way it's presented is as an optional mythos for the elves. As in, in universe, it is told from the perspective of someone passing down an oral tradition. It is a biased origin myth written by the victors.

Now. The reason I personally like Evermeet, despite having some qualms with the metatextual framework of it (which I will get into in depth when it pops up but tldr; There's a lot of victim blaming and the author does not seem aware that she wrote an abuse victim. It was the late 90's of course familial abuse against men isn't treated seriously) is that I'm of the personal belief that the Elf and Drow mythos, when existing in conversation with one another, is best interpreted as a story about familial abuse through the largescale framework of the divine. This is my personal agenda and my bias, and something that Evermeet is great for giving me evidence of! But, still worth establishing that this is a novel that you don't have to take as canon.

Final point before our read-more, because this is getting dangerously long as is. Because of how things are framed within the stories we're given, I do I feel like it's very important to pull up the context itself and not just go off the wiki. The example I will use for this is that on Vhaeraun's wiki page, there is a quote from him that out of context makes it sound like he's choosing not to help one of his follower because the follower hasn't impressed him well enough

“You lack the skill.” — Vhaeraun to Malvag when asked, "Why won't you help me?"

However, in context it becomes (in my opinion) very clear that Vhaeraun isn't helping him because he sincerely thinks that the guy can't do it. Like it would be dangerous for him to try. I'm under the impression in context that he's not denying him because he thinks he doesn't deserve it, he's denying him because he sincerely lacks the skill to use that help properly. And I think that is an important place to actually start our larger character analysis.

Vhaeraun watched. Malvag could feel the god's presence just over his shoulder. He whispered yet another prayer, one that would allow him to touch the god's omniscience. "I need him," he pleaded. "Why won't you help me?" The answer was a whisper only Malvag could hear. You lack the skill. Malvag rocked back on his heels. stunned. That was it [...]

So I'm bad at keeping things into categories. So we're going to start with what I think are Vhaerauns most important traits, and then go into his most prominent ones, because I feel like the important traits color the prominent ones, but like you said I think that kind of meshes with who he is as a person and why he behaves like he does. I'm going to try and narrow it down as I go, but if some of this seems a bit scattered at times. [mumbling noises] don't worry about it.

So that in mind. Insane thing to start with, but the biggest thing I would argue for with Vhaeraun is that he is best painted as a victim of abuse. And this isn't implication. If you take Evermeet at face value and how he interacts with Lolth in the beginning chapters, this is plain text.

(This is going to be the longest section because I have a lot to say on this both in how it's portrayed on a media analysis level and in a "What this means for his character" level, so I apologize in advance)

"Sehanine!" shrieked the dark goddess. She rose and rounded on her son, who'd been standing at her shoulder like a hovering raven awaiting a chance to feed. Vhaeraun took an instinctive step backward. "You idiot!" she screamed her face contorted with rage [...]

"And he is your lord husband. If there is a difference, please explain it to me. Otherwise, we will say that I am your son and leave the matter as settled," Vhaeraun said. His words were blunt and the implications harsh; instinctively he braced himself for another display of his mother's ready temper. To his surprise she laughed delightedly "You are my

[...] "And then what?" he countered in a tone that approximated his mother's sneer. "How can you hope to rule, with a goddess of Sehanine's power to oppose you? You should kill her now, when she is still helpless." Araushnee's hand flashed forward and dealt a ringing slap to her son's face. "Do not presume to question me," she said in a voice that bubbled with rage. "If you are so ignorant that you believe one god can easily kill another, perhaps I was wrong to make you my confidante and partner!" "But what of Herne?" pressed Vhaeraun, eager to salvage something of his dignity even it that only meant winning some small point of argument. "You told me that Malar killed him. And for that matter, why would you set Gruumsh and Malar against Corellon, if neither had hope of success?" "Don't be more of a fool than you must," snapped the goddess. "It is one thing to destroy a god from another place and another pantheon even among the gods, there are hunters and hunted, predators and prey. But to kill a member of one's own pantheon is another matter. If it were so easy, would I not already rule Arvandor?" The young god regarded his mother for several moments, his eyes thoughtful and his fingertips gingerly stroking his stinging cheek. "If it is as you say," he said slowly, "then perhaps you should leave the Seldarine." "Have you not heard a word I have said this day? [...]"

Imagine Araushnee at the head of a mighty force, the leader of the anti-Seldarine!" he concluded, his voice ringing with the drama of it and the pride of one who admires his own visions. Araushnee stared at him for a moment, then she shook her head in despair. "How did I give birth to two such idiots? Think, boy! List in your mind the great and glorious generals I have enlisted!"

Now. And here's where my issue with the metatextual framework of Evermeet sits.

The conclusion our wonderful friend Elaine Cunningham seems to want us to come to is that he is inherently complicit in his mothers schemes. Like, theres this consistent idea throughout the book that he is equally at fault as his mother for everything that happened, and that bleeds into the text. It's in the way he's framed around her as that of "A Hovering Raven", and like he's lesser for not standing up to her in that moment. But, what I'm reading with my eyes in the good god given year of 2025 is a character who is getting thrown around by his mother and fawning under her to keep her anger regulated. He's constantly portrayed as preparing to or actively take a hit from her, or deal with the repercussions of her anger, or being on some receiving end of some beration. It does not escape me that he adjusts his plans and the way he talks to make her happy. He suggests that they leave and when it's clear that she's not happy he adjusts his thoughts until she is happy with it.

Now, all of this isn't just a "Here's my propoganda as to why my poor blorbo did nothing wrong moment," (Being upfront, my conclusion for Vhaeraun is "Did a few things wrong, but not nearly as much as you'd think) I think this is something that genuinely colors his motivations and the kind of person he is later. Likewise, I think this showcases something thats not only deeply important about him as a person, but Eilistraee and the dynamic that they're in. I think Vhaeraun did, as a result of being her favorite child, experience more of Lolth's direct abuse than Eilistraee did, and it's given him more of an awareness and nuance of the kind of person their mother is than his sister has.

Editing in a long minor note going into the next section before I post this: I feel the need to establish. As a character, I do actually really like Eilistraee. Vhaeraun is my main focus, but Eilistraee is my third favorite Dark Seladrine god on a character level. I'm a little bit critical of her and her world view here because the book isn't. I feel a bit more of a need to defend Vhaeraun's logic and a bit more of a need to dismantle Eilistraee's because the narrative handling for both consistently isn't handled with the amount of nuance that I think they should be. I personally think Vhaeraun and Eilistraee are two sides of the same coin. Despite what DnD wants me to believe, I don't think Eilistraee is always right and Vhaeraun is always wrong. I think they're two characters responding very differently to the insane and extreme circumstances in which they stemmed from, and to say one is wholly correct and the other is "The wrong one" misses the point.

I also acknowledge that this is a DnD'ism that a lot of people have already criticized since even going back to the 90's. I am not the first to say that the alignment system doesn't hold up and the in-universe idea of good and bad is inherently flawed and lacks a lot of nuance. Like. I think there's this idea of "Because we know he ends up evil, this isn't as severe, because he deserves it for being evil" levels of logic happening within the narrative. Take my hand though, we're going to add nuance to it.

Something else important about Vhaeraun. Just a little thing worth mentioning, not too important in the grand scheme of things. Maybe a little more important than I'm implying. Vhaeraun was the original Main Influential God of the Drow.

So. Comparatively, Eilistraee to me reads as a little naive with how she's often portrayed. She was shielded from the worst of their mothers temper and abuse as a result of being her fathers favorite.

Eilistraee, to me, doesn't understand the intricacies of violence, war, and abuse. When she see's her brother, she see's the same kind of evil as her mother. But Eilistraee a FASCINATINGLY unreliable narrator. She is biased against her brother and his influence, so she is only ever going to see the spread of it as an evil. And because, as mentioned, the book is operating on the assumption that he too is evil, it doesn't so a lot to showcase HOW his presence is an evil. So. Vhaeraun came to Toril first, and Lolth followed because she felt his presence off of one of the elves that came into the Demonweb pits. And the country that he was worshiped in was implied to not only be functional, but like thriving in a time when Dragons were the main threat. And his power only collapsed like it did because of his people dying in a black plague level of tragedy.

Other effects of the Sundering also brought mixed emotions to the goddess. On the one hand, it had destroyed many of her worshipers. Yet for each of her elves that had tumbled into the sea or been crushed by falling stone, at least three of Vhaeraun's followers had perished. Lloth reigned supreme among the dark elves' gods.

The conclusion that I'm coming to (Admittedly, this one doesn't have canon basis in plain text to point to, but stick with me) I think Vhaeraun see's himself as the "Rightful" God of the Drow (As in, drow as a whole, not just male drow.) He see's himself as someone that had his "Kingdom" stolen from him. If HE was in control the drow would still be powerful. If HE was the main one being worshiped, they would be respected. But because his mother came and influenced them, he (they) lost everything.

Related to both of these point, I don't think that he has ever seen Eilistraee as a direct threat to him and his power. All of his hatred towards his sister has been portrayed (and outright stated) to be rooted reaction to how he's treated as a result of their father favoring her, and what he see's as her enabling. And again, that goes right back into what my thesis point is for the Drow/Elf pantheon. This is a story about an abusive family structure, and that colors everything about the relationships between parent and child and siblings.

[...] Likewise, the Masked Lord nurtures an abiding hatred of Eilistraee. The Dark Maiden always held Corellon's favor more than her hateful brother, and she thwarted Vhaeraun's early efforts to bring all the Ilythiiri (southern, dark-skinned elves) under his sway, enabling Lolth and Ghaunadaur to make great inroads among those who would become the drow. [...]

"Not alone," Vhaeraun said firmly. "Eilistraee plotted with us. She deserves to share my fate." "Eilistraee? I cannot believe this of the girl" began Sehanine. "You were not here!" Aerdrie broke in fiercely. "I saw her shoot the arrow that struck down Corellon! And as her own mother points out, the girl has never missed her mark!" Corellon shook his head. "I cannot believe she would do such a thing!" "Believe!" hissed Vhaeraun, enraged that Corellon suffered such doubt and anguish at the thought that his precious Eilistraee might have turned against him. He was willing enough to name his son a traitor! Vhaeraun had always hated his younger, favored twin. Now he would have his vengeance. The young god turned to his mother, his eyes burning with an enmity that set even one such as Araushnee back on her heels. "You promised me power and honor," he said in a voice meant only for his mother's ears. "But instead, your ambitions have cost me everything. Give me Eilistraee, and I will consider this day's bargain well made."

[...] Finally he looked to Vhaeraun. "Eilistraee has chosen. Go now, and take her with you. But know that the day your hand is lifted against her will be the last of your life. This I swear, by all the trees of Arvandor." Vhaeraun's face twisted with hatred and rage, but he had little choice but to comply. Corellon stood silent as the young god shouldered his unconscious twin and disappeared. Finally he rose to his feet and faced his fallen love. [...]

And I do think it's a bit telling that even at the height of his power, the most he did was exile her. (This is implied, who else would have done it)

[...] "I am known as Eilistraee, the Dark Maiden. I require from you neither reverence nor vigilance," she said softly. "I come as a friend, and in need of friends. Put aside both your weapons and your wonder, and let us talk. There are things that you must know if you intend to confront the Ilythiiri." The sadness in her voice smote Sharlario's heart, and he did as she bid. "You spoke of exile, lady," he commented. "Forgive me, but I have never heard of such a thing. From whence are you exiled, and, if I might ask, why?" "Most recently, from the southlands," the goddess said. [...]

Authors note: The Ilythiiri were drow before they were called drow.

If he wanted her dead (for the crime of existing), I think he would have killed her ages ago. But I don't think he does. I think he's just angry at the hand he's been dealt and it's easier to blame her than it is to unpack the complicated feelings he has towards his mother. Him attacking her in Lady Penitent feels like a means to an end for me. He's not attacking her because he hates her personally, despite what she thinks. He's attacking her because (In character logic and reasoning) if he combines their churches then maybe he will have enough power to combat their mother.

(Now. I as an author think this is flawed logic, and we know that because when Eilistraee took his aspects the churches splintered, because you can't force people to worship someone they don't like. But, his logic and reasoning nonetheless)

I'm not sure where to include this, but we're getting to the end of the family section and I still haven't mentioned Selvetarm.

Selvetarm... To keep it short. The cycle of abuse continues. He's absolutely blinded by rage when it comes to his family.

[...] "What I want, you speck of a creature" he brandished the stump of his wrist before Inthracis's face "is Selvetarm's obsequious brain torn from his foul head so that I can use his empty skull as a piss pot." [...]

Now. Going away from all of that to the next big thing with him.

I think a lot of people want to kind of. Dance around the drow racism of his character. I don't think we can dance around the fantasy racism of his character. I think, in fact, we need to sit on the fantasy racism a little bit and peel back the layers of it because I actually think the framework of what we're looking and what it says about him is kind of interesting. Because Vhaeraun really does not hate non-drow.

This can be a touchy subject. Up front, take none of this as a defense of his mindset, just an explanation toward its and an exploration of it.

But so long as they accept their subservient role, they will be accepted.

But this isn't the only thing I want to bring up from this video.

Using these as sources, here is what I think Vhaeraun's mentality and the drow supremacy of it all comes from.

Vhaeraun does sincerely see drow as being better than other races. However. To properly understand where his mindset is, you must also understand that it is a racism of patronizing rather than one of pure hatred. Drow are better, they're stronger, they're my favorite, so we must show our strength and power and our ability to care for those we will rule. How can we be trusted to rule over them if we do not carry ourselves with the honor and respect of someone that is worthy of ruling.

It is the divine right to rule on a hierarchical level.

I also think there is a level of distrust and discomfort that comes from their their circumstance. He is the counter to Eilistraee's "We must show others we are good and deserving of their respect." He is this logic of "Why should we trust and respect those that don't respect us? They should just already respect us."

So I think the drow supremacy of it all is uhh. Nuanced. I don't think his mindset is right, but I also think it is one that would be changed if their circumstances were less extreme. I also think the mindset enables his church to do uh. Evil Slavery Things! Again, we cannot get around the evil fantasy slavery things and the bigotry of it all.

But we can explore it. Because this is a fictional character in a fictional setting.

Now, semi-related to the above point as well, with all of that in consideration, I don't know if Vhaeraun wants power for the sake of power. I don't have any in-text proof of this outside of "Everything above is emblematic of a deeper motivation" but I'm kind of under the impression that to Vhaeraun, power is synonymous with stability and respect.

So. That's Vhaeraun and the important/prominent traits he has. Now I think we can get into him as a person on a personality level.

Personality wise, this is how he's described.

I think your impression of him (That he's someone that keeps a lot close to his chest) is correct. My personal interpretation of Vhaeraun is that he is playing the part his followers need him to play. What he needs to be is a leader and a king. What I think Vhaeraun wants is to be one of the guys (for a lack of a better term). He wants to be included. He WANTS to be called out to, and wants to be wanted. He finds it hard to hold aloof from the needs of his worshipers. He doesn't want them summoning anyone but him.

and this is built into how he works mechanically. He's weak on his own, but he's supposed to be built around his followers and take advantage of their skill set.

Related: Do you want to see the hottest thing he's ever done. Like canonically. To me.

Defending one of his guys without even looking and then sending the assailant flying into the air. Deeply hilarious. Very hot. I would trust him with my life. I think about this passage a non-zero amount.

Not important to his character persay, but a fun sidenote to cut through all this. While the fact he's the god of thieves has gotten the most focus in recent years, in the many ways he parallels Eilistraee he's actually the God of the Night canonically, and a lot of things around him (especially in earlier editions) ride around that coding. If Eilistraee is the moon, he is the sky and the stars.

I joke about the fact he's a dumbass (Because he can be a little bit of a dumbass) but I do actually think he prefers logic and reason schemeing solutions to violent ones. If he can get power by doing tax evasion, he prefers that to doing it through conquest. Because conquest means the people that worship him die as well, and he really doesn't like putting his guys at risk.

As an example, and something I consider to be a deeply telling thing of his character. He's a bitch that LOVES a loophole. Gods aren't allowed to steal souls from other gods? That's fine. He'll just have his followers do it. He's not breaking any rules.

He can't kill mortals directly? That's fine. He'll hire demons to do it.

He's someone that LOVES getting away with things that he should not. He doesn't need to fight. He just needs to outscheme.

(Though, and this isn't supported by anything in text and another thing I just personally noticed as a trend. Despite seeming to view himself as a schemer and a logical person, he is a character who is not only deeply driven by his emotions, but kneecapped by them as well. As mentioned earlier, he's so blinded by his anger towards his family that it ruins multiple of his plans. His want to keep his worshipers safe stops him from using them, even when they might have allowed it. I think a lot of the things he did in WotsQ was driven by panic. He acts before he thinks, and he acts on his emotions, and he hides that he acts on his emotions by putting up this edgy, knives and shadows front.)

Anyway. Final note. He's a whore. Male slut. Libertine.

Now, there's a consistent implication with most gods in the Forgotten Realms that they are willing to sleep around, and I know that Ed Greenwood has described the presence of gods as caresses and touches. However, lets be clear. There's no implication here. He is just one of the few gods that even back in 2e that is directly mentioned to be sleeping with his followers.

Masked traitors receive the personal attention of Vhaeraun in the form of useful information imparted to them from time to time in their dreams. The Masked Lord richly rewards those who do well in his service, and he often (falsely) hints he is willing grant immortality to worthy traitors or even elevate them to the role of his consort

Now, you can interpret that the (Falsely) is applicable to both the immortal line and the consort line, but

So where does all of this bring us. How do I summarize my thoughts on Vhaeraun: The Masked Lord.

[All of these are my personal conclusion summed up. If you disagree, thats totally fine! But this is the impression of him I personally get with all of this in consideration.]

I think a massive and defining part of his character is the concept of noblesse oblige. This is something that colors so much of the way he behaves. Because as a deity he is stronger than the drow that worship him, it is his job and his duty to protect them. Because drow are better than other races, and it is their duty to Shepard them. If they are not protecting them properly (And by proxy, If he is not protecting his guys properly) that is a failure on their (his) part. He's someone who believes in the idea of honor amongst his own people.

In contrast to that, I think he is deeply possessive, protective, petty, spiteful motherfucker. He is, above all else, emotional, and driven by the things he feels. And I think the things he feels most frequently anger and righteous fury.

And I think the irony of it all is that all of that comes from the fact that he cares. In fact, I think he only acts as he does because of how strongly he cares. The drow are his. They are something stolen from him. He loves the drow. That is his love and his empathy, because it is the only way he's ever known how to love and empathize. And the reason that is the only way he knows how to love and empathize is because he's an abuse victim. You cannot touch on the concept of Vhaeraun without touching on his sister, mother, and father because he only became the kind of person he is because of them. While you don't have to touch on his son, I think doing so adds another layer, because it shows another way he's kneecapped by his emotions. He can't separate the emotions he feels towards his mother from the feelings he has towards his son, thus inflicting the same neglect and pain he was subjected to onto him and leaving him in the hands of his mother, while blaming him and strictly him for what she made of him [Selvetarm, that is.]

You know. Like people to him.

I think his evolution of going from what seems to be this young, Dionysus like deity, to a god of territory who managed to make alliances with dragons and create a respected empire, to this militant and paranoid divine figure and leader of rebellion is fascinating.

And I think, despite his personality being the way it is? He's not unkind. He just isn't wearing that kindness on his sleeve. He CAN'T wear the kindness on his sleeve. But his gifts aren't insincere. He wants to include his worshipers in the things he's doing. He wants to BRING them places.

"Vhaeraun has called me to his service in the planes beyond Faerûn on several occasions," Tzirik admitted. "In fact, I have been in the Demonweb Pits before now. All the gods of our race reside here, each in their own domain within this great chasm of webbing. My previous business did not take me to Lolth's domain, though, and that was a good many years ago."

I think he is someone deeply motivated by the concept of "Means to an end." Doing bad things now is fine, because once we're in power we won't need to do that anymore. It's okay to do bad things to the people that don't respect us, because it is not our job to convince them to respect us. They will see our power, and then they will respect us.

And, if you want something that I think is never stated plainly, but my insane delusions of the upmost degree. I think he's a god who's a little uncomfortable with the divine. They're not something that can be trusted. But his mortals? The ones who chose to worship him and put their trust in him? They are the ones he likes. They are the one's he'll protect.

And also all of that and he's a slut.

Eggs can be broken, for an infinity amount of reasons. not because he was scared no, but because he wasn't prepared for the emotional damage when one of you died and left the other to weather frieza's tyranny alone. he didn't want to be without you or leave you alone in this place

it was after he went to earth and nearly died to Kakarot and Piccolo he was like "erm, i'm gonna say something"

after making it back barely alive he eventually recovered and told you how he felt

his story of how strong earths warriors are made you question staying with the frieza force until it was safe to leave

once Vegeta and Nappa decided to invade earth, you and Raditz tagged along secretly and started to live happy lives as the weirdos next door :3

The sound through your headphones was like music to your ears. One more machine done.

You slowly read the common text lines on the screen, sprinting away to the machine right across from you.

The higher floors you got to, the harder this became. Most of the “all common twisteds” floors were fine, but then there were maps that because you had so many twisteds you could just get a centimeter of a machine done each time you went out. And then there was the nightmare that is Twisted Shelly, making it EVEN SLOWER.

You let out a groan as the eye symbol popped up again on your screen and you swiveled the mouse to face the direction you ran. Quickly, you turned the screen behind you to see an annoying Flutter chasing you.

You had made nicknames for the twisteds like Toodles, Looey, Gigi, and of course, Flutter. She was “Bobblehead”. You know, like the weird wheel of fortune things? Her head moved from side to side, but her gaze never broke from that one spot, aka you.

You gotta say, the developers did a decent job on her. She ALMOST made you shiver once.

Blackouts didn’t help her case either. Not any more scary than she was on regular floors.

Really, it was always annoying when people freeloaded in blackouts or when they were on one heart just because they were “scared”. THE WHOLE POINT OF THE GAME IS TO DO STUFF AND THEN DIE. THE FLOORS ARE INFINITE, THERE ISN’T AN END POINT.

Plus, the more machines you do, the more ichor you get! People race for machines for this very reason!

(Ahem cough cough sorry for rambling about my frustrations anyways uh)

Silence as the eye symbol crossed out, indicating she had lost you. She turned around and flew in the other direction immediately, acting as if nothing had ever happened.

Stupid…

The dripping of the ichor as you worked on the machine was a bit odd to you in the beginning. A strange noise for aure, but you had gotten used to it. Still, even now as your character, Astro, turned the wheel with his magic, it still was almost foreign.

You never knew if it would be like normal to you ever, but that wasn't the point.

The machine’s light turned from blood red to a grass green, and a text box appeared automatically upon its completion. You briefly scanned over the words, before boredly returning to your gaze on the speed candy a bit away from you.

And then you stopped.And you looked back at the text.

“This never gets easier.”

…Was that a line?

Never in your whole time of playing Dandy’s World had you ever seen that line. Was this new dialogue? But…they never added new dialogue for characters, ever.It at least sounded normal, something he would say, but it still made you raise an eyebrow in pure confusion.

Squinting, you continued on after realising you had been standing in the middle of a large area, where twisteds could get you easily.

You resolved to look that up on the wiki later, picking up the speed candy with a single press of the E key.

But it continued.The next machine you did, there was another “new line”. This time even weirder than the first.

“3 more…? Can we rest first?”

You glanced up at the bar above, and indeed it said 12/15 machines.

…Would Qwel really put a line in the game that breaks the fourth wall?

Thoughts were drowning your mind out in a field of static. “What if”’s plagued you, toying with your emotions. You couldn’t help it. If they were real, and…and that dialogue was genuine…then they surely didn’t want to do this, right?

He was probably angry. They were probably all angry. All the characters you had ever played. Angry that you had subjected them to this torture where they were forced to die over and over again.

Shadow High series 3 my new beloved

-I changed Pinkie's major from film to just undeclared. I think she eventually does land on Film. She just has a lot of interests! Her dream has always been to one day direct films, and I think she comes to love them even more while developing ideas her with the group as she winds up in a Director/Producer position for most of them. BUT also every time she takes a class in a different program she cant help but fall in love with that way of making art too. So she has a hard time picking for a while and changed her major a couple times before landing on Film.

-Pinkie and Berrie bond a lot over a shared interest in vocal synths (tho Berrie knows more about them than her).

-The two made Pinkie's vtuber model together!

-the fandom wiki says PJ is from germany?? Idk how canon that is tbh but ive decided to embrace it i guess

-Rooney's canon name is Scarlet Rose, but i thought it was kinda lame especially when Rosie Redwood is also in this line sooo I renamed her! Stuck to the color name puns tho. Mar Rooney. Maroon. Haha

-Speaking on her though i love that shes from texas and likes writing scifi mystery type stuff and that being said i just Know deep in my bones that she was a Voltron Legendary Defender fan and Keith was/is 100% her favorite. She has a continued fondness for mothman specifically cuz of this.

-PJ and Rooney actually talk about fandom and shows/movies ALL the time. They dont have a ton of overlapping interests, but where they do? The two literally never shut up.

-Rosie is such a random character, like outside of her design she feels very poorly considered. So I scrapped the cosmetology thing and made her an illustrator instead! I think it works better with her love of making art in nature. I can see her being really into illustrated guide books. I think shes a bit snooty when it comes to art too. It takes being friends with other artists to become more open minded.

-I like the idea that Rosie is mainly friends with Rooney and Berrie ontop of that. The three of them often tag team storylines and how theyd interpret them into different mediums. Rosie will draw up a bunch of concept stuff while Rooney writes up a pitch bible and Berrie will start making shit move and throwing in her own ideas on camera angles and character designs.

-as an animation major Berrie was required to take a sound design class early on, which is where she met Oliver! Hes very laid back, and likes to go with the flow, but functions a little like the "mom" of the group. Often reminding the girls to take breaks, drink water, stop looking at their screens lest they get eye strain etc. He's multi-talented tbh but Music is his one true passion and he likes how the girls are always giving him collaboration opportunities.

-Oliver and Rosie like to talk sports a lot, both having played a bunch when they were younger and throughout high school.

-Lavender Lynn is Oliver's number one "person who needs constant reminders to settle down" she is in a constant buzz of trying to get the best shots and is utterly obsessed with the process of artistic documentation. Everything must be documented.

-the whole school loves her for this actually, she has a whole side gig where other students hire her to help photograph their projects. She saves everything she earns from this for her future dream plans to visit paris. She has it set really, many of the artists who she helps photograph now will remain steadfast clients of hers forever onward.

-PJ and Lynn actually took a print media class together at one point. Which didnt at the time spark an everlasting friendship. But it did give PJ an easier in to ask for Lynn's help documenting a project the group was working on. One of Lynn's first times photographing them work happened to fall on a day where Rosie had planned to trick everyone into going on a nature walk sans devices... Lynn wound up really appreciating this outing and decided to continue hanging around the group even after that project had ended.

Okay since we're doing some psionic talk i obviously need to cover the dangerous psychic power of all... The power of mind control. Whether it be possession,brainwashing,hypnosis,or some kind of corruption or puppeteering it's a very scary concept done up in a lot of ways. And to show just how many ways one can bend a mind to their whim were gonna look at 2012 tmnt and see every time(to my memory) that the hamato clan got mentally manipulated and controlled in some way shape or form... Keep in mind despite it being the show i know the most about im not a picture perfect record of all of 2012 turtle shenanigans so i might miss some ones.

But let's start going by season with what i remember mind control wise. And what better place to start then with season 1

Season 1

I'll say it right away... Every single season has at least some mind control element to it.

But our very first look at mind control comes from season 1s rat king himself. Dr falco had the power to control any kind of rat, which sadly included the turtles beloved sensei himself.

The next(and final) mind control comes to us in the form of a mutated insect. A parasitic wasp that once it stings you will make you it's slave to it's egg(and if that infected person bites someone they get infected as well and can spread it) ultimately the slave's fate is to get eaten by the baby that comes from the egg. This was also a case of 1 against against 3 controlled. This time it was mikey vs his bros and he ended up curing them. But that's season 1 down and a decent start of the tally(yes at the end of this post we have a tally for who has been messed with the most)

Season 2

And this time we have not 1 but two cases of 1 brother against the others(and the last time i think we'll see mikey solo saving his brothers) as well as what might be the very first time we ever see mystic powers in 2012 period.

But let's start with who came before the mystical evil spirit... Pizzaface(one of the only times i see no complaints from anyone about mikeys naming of the mutant. The man even complimented mikey for his name) in this case pizza face brainwashed all of new york city(so a much bigger step then just controlling 3 trained ninjas or a master rat sensei)with brainwashing(and living!) pizza that would eventually make his pizza craving zombies not only follow his command but also get eaten by him... If we didn't see pizzaface again in season 4 or his tony form after mikey ate most of his body(and yes that means mikey ate a man. We have one mikey who we know technically killed an evil man(his father) and one who ate an evil man(the pizza man who i think is where the turtles usually got their pizza) I'm not gonna try to count all of 2003 mikeys crimes let's leave that to processionals) i would understand everyone thinking mikey made it up. But he didn't and now we all wonder if they ever found out(probably if he took a pic of pizzaface in the episode he met mondo)

Our final case of successful mind control happens to also be the first time we see mystic mind control(we won't see that again for awhile) as well as our first seeing of the mystic arts. The evil chinese spirit Ho chan. Who btw is from the very episode who started my crusade of looking into all the tomes they got messed with. Ho chan came to pop up when the purple dragons(who are literally not even the main character's this episode according to the wiki. They're side characters) released him from a dagger he was imprisoned in. He planned to drain april of her psychic powers and even gave power to the 3 dragons who released him(and those cool hats you see on the turtles) before eventually taking them away and instead giving the powers of wind,lightning and thunder to mikey,leo and raph respectively. Leaving donnie to be the one fighting 3 mind called bros this time. Only they're toted as being invincible and he has help in the form of casey(who he doesn't even get along with and is still in the 'there gonna fight to be April's boyfriend' phase of their lives) but since it was so close to the episodes end we didn't get allot of time for these guys.

Christ this is a long section On to season 3!

Season 3

Why am i counting the speed demon car? Well it did control donnies body and mutated him when it ate him and merged themselves(that and i have another case of this later on as well. We can also count this as corroptive) but the highlight of this season(and probably one of the more notorious mind control things) is the genetically engineered brainworms made by stockman that not only took control of some of the hamato clans allies but also raph and karai as well(leading eventually to the literal saw parody where everyone could have died even more) thankfully we don't see these guys ever again after this season to my memory. At least we know healing hands apparently helps you detox and purge an actual mutant worm that looks like it burrows into your eye.

Onto season 4. And it might shock you.

Season 4

This time we're discussing the corruption type of mind control. And a little possession on the side. As well as the most psychic based mind control we've seen in the series(which is interesting... Might add that to my list of tallies for this post) but here we have the aeon home planet and an aeon herself. Za naron(or of your a marvel nerd, aprils dark phoenix saga. As well as further evidence all sentient psychic forces or spirits love to bond/possess and almost always corrupt red haired psychics!)

The planet itself mostly just amplifies your existing anger while also making you angry in return(i think that had to do with the actual item april got a piece of that eventually corrupted her. The soul star) but that anger is enough to make someone hurt and nearly kill there friends and family.

And when it comes to za naron her spirit inside the star was corrupted and so april also eventually got corrupted till za naron got majority custody and donnie got atomized for the majority of the 2 parter.

Yeah this might be a good reason to not give a mind controlled slave person enchantments or powers.

But let's move onto the final season. Season 5

Season 5

(If i didn't have a 10 photo limit you'd dracula as well) season 5 not only has the most mind control instances for us to see but also the last few instances of mystic control and a corruptive one as well.

Let's start with jei. In ways he's both stronger and weaker than ho shen. Stronger in that his mind control happened multiple times and he literally pulled the turtles into a crossover between dimensions.... But weaker in the fact that he didn't give them any extra oomf like shen did back in season 2. Either jei couldn't because he's still a mortal and bound by flash,he had confidence in their abilities even while puppeted,or he was paranoid enough not to do so.

The last mystic controller is A case of supernatural mind control that resulted in enchantments. it's dracula himself. Overwriting peoples personalities and controlling them. Making vampires. He even got 4 of the hamatos before mikey killed him and saved everyone dracula controlled(which is the final time i remember where mikey saves people from mind control) but we still have one more

Mutant apocalypse leo. Whose is a very large example of being corrupted. In this case very similar to the aeon planet he was a rage machine.

And now we can finally tally up the scores.

11 mind controls throughout 5 seasons. And out of the 11(with some taking multiple slots)

6 are scientific and or engineered(jesus)

6 are corruptive

3 are mystical

3 are psionic

1 is posession

And for how many times each hamato got corrupted

Raph takes the trauma trophy for being messed with a grand total of 7 out of 11 times(lord i wanna hug him. Or make mikey hug him)

Leo comes in hot with a solid 6 out of 11 tones so this is one trauma trophy the fearless leader doesn't get

Donnie comes in next with a tie in for leos score with a 6 out of 11. Can anyone say 2012 disaster twins!

And mikey comes in last of his brothers with a total of 3 out of 11. Quite commendable but not the lowest score

April comes in tied with mikey with a 3 out of 11.

And casey has a solid 2 out of 11... But we have someone even lower.

OOC POST!!!! long post about my personal opinions about murphy and sex. soo cw..sexual talk.

so, something i see a lot of is murphy being into violence with sex and also being really good at it. personally, i disagree on both of those.

now, according to the wiki, richard harmon has said he thinks murphy’s dad died when he was 10, his mother a couple years later, resulting in his arrest happening at 13. if we go by that, hes been in the sky box for four years. almost his entire teenage life. i dont really know what the conditions were like there but i dont think there was a lot of opportunity for some proper sex. maybe he got handsy with some people at most. i assume the cells were separated by gender which means he was in with other young boys, and we dont really know the culture around queerness was on the ark but personally im not very optimistic. teenage boys are some of the most ruthless perpetrators of homophobia. murphy seems like a pretty traditionally masculine guy, and honestly i wouldnt put it past him to make a couple of backhandedly homophobic remarks. not like calling someone a fag outright but he’s definitely made some distasteful jokes. also the flashbacks of earth skills classes in s3 show him making a jab to harper, and overall just doesn’t seem like he’s genuinely popular with girls. to me he kinda feels like a huge twat.

when the 100 go down, murphy establishes himself with bellamy. it’s clear that bellamy is the ladies man of the group. murphy isn’t hated but he isn’t quite liked, and i just don’t get the impression that people are falling over themselves to sleep with him. i do find him very pretty, but he kinda gives weird loner vibes, and also is an ass which imo his looks aren’t enough to save him from.

he’s a prick and pretty selfish, i imagine sex with him is not about pleasing you. but the thing is, i don’t think he’d be mean about it he just wouldn’t care. and he doesn’t know what he’s doing at all. something i think fics get right is that it’s messy and quick, but especially when it comes to afab folks bro is not taking the time do foreplay. i just don’t believe that he knows what to do, especially not with his hands. another thing is despite the fact that he displays sadistic behavior i don’t think he wants to hold a knife against you while you’re having sex. the most harm i think he’d /intentionally/ do is just like toss you around a little roughly. if anything it’s the power he gets off on, not so much the pain. as much as i enjoy a fic where he’s beating the shit out of bellamy or getting choked while he gets fucked, i think it’s really out of character for him. honestly i think he’s pretty vanilla. that is if you even have sex. which brings me to my next point. if you don’t want to read spoilers then skip this last part of the paragraph. when he meets emori, he’s immediately taken with her. he has no other love interest besides her. he kisses her like a starving man, and he’s devoted to her from the beginning. i think with that as a result of that sex goes from being a release to an emotional act. as for other sexual encounters, yes he sneaks glances at ontari, but would you kill me for saying he’s just a guy. and they have sex, but she forced that upon him, he objected on grounds of emori. he’s the most gentle with her. while i think he’s a crude person when it comes to sex, i don’t think he’s the type to sleep around. maybe a make out late at night, coming in his pants or something, but i highly doubt it.

as much as i like to have fun and play around, I don’t think murphy would give himself over like that willy nilly with just anyone. despite sex being a very emotionally removed thing for him it is nonetheless a very vulnerable thing, and hes been stuck alone with his trauma for so many years, he wouldn’t open himself up that easily to somebody, not unless he liked them a lot. which we see with emori. even with her, it still took them a bit to pass that physical line.

tldr, in my heart murphy is honestly kind of vanilla (though emori might change that) and pretty inexperienced, and anything but a slut. bellamy is canonically a bigger slut than he could ever be. but nevertheless, i don’t mind doing this with you all, its fan service and i have a good time. thank you for reading if you got this far!’ and if you have any thoughts about him yourself please share them below!!!!

rain hi hello!! ive been thinking about ways to improve and the technicalities of writing lately, things like how to better incorporate symbols or poetry or that kinda thing—and i was wondering if you have any more advice or writing tips?? all of it's so helpful you're a genius 💚💚💚

pluuutoooooooo hi my darling!!!! <3 how're u!!! and yeS! u kno i can ramble about writing forever hahaha hm okay so -- i think in terms of symbolism, there are a few things you can do:

first, figure out what kind of symbolism resonates with you. right like figure out what you like first -- for me personally, it's star/sky/space stuff as well as like storm/ocean/ships stuff most of the time

and then from there, try (???) to have like one or two overarching "imagery" thingies within a single fic/drabble (or just within the scene you're writing) -- ie, for one of the vi fics im working on right now, reader is studying to be an astrophysicist, so i can kind of lean into the astronomy metaphors about space and time and fun sciency stuff bc it's technically how she would see the world right?

and to that point, don't force it -- try to sit back and think about how you yourself see the world -- there's poetry all around you, if only you'd stay still enough to hear it. is it the way the sunlight reflects off the water of the sea? how it looks kind of like gold or silver that you can't quite touch? or maybe how a city from way up high on a plane looks kind of like scattered stars, or like tiny tributaries all feeding towards a center lake or stream?

intake -- intake the things you want to create. i've said it before and i'll keep saying it as long as people don't get tired of hearing me yammer about it -- read poetry! listen to slam poems! read them and listen to your favorites over and over again until those words become your own. i can't tell you how many times i've listened to rudy francisco's love poem medley or sarah kay and phil kaye's "when love arrives" or any number of favorites that i have! it brings me joy and also inspires me to be a better, more vivid writer

pay attention to your verbs -- yes, i know this is a pretty specific one, but there's a piece of writing advice that's goes something like "one good verb will outdo a hundred okay adjectives" and like all writing advice, take this with a grain of salt bc adjectives are GREAT lol but for instance, "said loudly" and "shouted" have very different vibes, in the same way that "shouted" and "screamed" have different vibes -- but "shouted" and "screamed" are much more visceral (or so it feels like to me), so pay attention to the verbs that your favorite writers use, and also to the motion of everyday things -- what does your heartbeat feel like when it's beating really fast? is it a murmur? a flutter? a thundering?

don't be afraid to intake knowledge. and by this i mean, be a nerd!!!! be a nerd about the things you like! read that entire wiki page on the weird niche thing, and then let your passion for it show! i wouldn't be able to write half the metaphors i do about space if i hadn't like... gone through a weird astrophysics phase and read up on like QUARKS or like STRING THEORY -- so whatever it is that you're passionate about, whatever interest, no matter how niche -- lean into it! and then make that the centerpoint of your imagery and watch how your writing blooms!

deconstruct imagery that you like from your favorite writers -- when i read novels by my fav authors, i will fucking highlight like my life depends on it LMFAO no joke like:

THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY highlights for a book that was LITERALLY only 356 pages. i effectively had 1 highlight for every single page of the book lol -- and then i'd scroll through all my highlights and be like cool these are all the sentences i liked -- why did i like them? and how can i incorporate that structure into my own writing?

don't be too hard on yourself! try to have fun with it -- if you're writing an au about a pirate ship, then lean into the ocean metaphors, if you're writing an au about a bartender, then think about cocktails and alcohol metaphors! let the characters and the story and the settings help inform the symbolism that you use and you'll be golden!! <3

im gonna just write my thoughts on it. i find it amusing how much people despise this region, tho i can understand the reasons for that. AR and its multitude of subregions do make a large slice of the region list in the expansion. they're kinda samey, the level design is questionable at times, and its presence somewhat overbearing. we're back in the fucking building again babeeyyy!!!!!

i personally dont mind it that much tbh. a friend of mine put it quite succinctly in that its just an arcadey/generic rain world level. some definitely may see this as a negative, but i think they included aether ridge and it split up its massive layout to pad the expansion a bit? which doesnt sound great putting it like that, but knowing that there was some pressure to release the game before it was fully realized, i think it was a reasonable move to make. i also like that the dev team included modders on this project as well and i think its a nice gesture to the community.

i mostly want to point out something that i think ended up frustrating a lot of players though. lets look at this flowchart from the rw wiki..

so, we start our adventure into these supposed Imagined Worlds on the bottom left side. our starter regions can be either WSKB, WSKA, or WRFA, depending on where we found our third encounter with Spinning Top.

taking a closer look... we can see that all these paths lead to WARF, aka, The Fucking Building. If you're lucky, you CAN end up in WRRA from WSKB, which gives you a good opportunity to escape this starting area and into WTDB, which would contain your first echo. but given how many paths lead to AR, i think most players end up finding themselves here. and hoo boy

this is definitely a region. personally, i think its a very daaaaaunting region to have so early on. its huge, for one. the platforming is tricky at times, for two. and there are some reasonable criticisms about the level design. heres two right off the bat:

i do think there was some thought put into it by the devs in terms of warp placement, however. from each of your starting points, i do think the level tries to guide you down the mountain, toward one of your two escape routes to WTDA (which gives you a tasty Spinning Top encounter), or to WSKD (a brief respite from TFB). if you look at one of the maps online, you can kinda trace a Theoretically Reasonable path that leads to the south end. The problem is... is that rain world doesnt always work like that. people like to find rooms! and its also just so fucking big.

getting lost IS part of rain world, and i think that is all well and good. but its just curious to me that a Rare region like WVWA, which in my experience is a cute little walk in the park by comparison, has only two possible ways to enter it naturally.

i think aether ridge could've been a later game region tbh. i know that doesnt mean... much.. when you can randomly warp by the time you get enough ripple, but if you're encountering ST enough beforehand, its possible you'll have access to the ripple float ability, which i think a lot of players would greatly appreciate in this region.

similarly, i think WARD and WARG have similar issues, but maybe less so, given that they require a bit more work to get to? again, i think WARF couldve been placed a bit later i suppose.

to put it simply, i think aether ridge ends up being this massive, spongey wall for a lot of people given its size, complexity and the fact thats all the starting regions connect into it. but hey, it was also my experience that once i escaped, i very quickly started seeing a lot of progress.

now whats a rain world post without some ponderings into the Lore. i do think it was probably an intentional choice to organize and place the region warps as they did.

when you look at how WBLA and WARD both connect to each other, and ALSO both connect to WSSR.. i find that interesting. the easiest case to make about these intentional connections is how WRSA connects to both WAUA and WORA. we can also point to WARB and WARC, for that matter. it raises the question as to why are organized in this way.. and on that, i have no clue. i just think its Neat.

so you know how i tend to write masky to.. not really be expressive and kind of just there watching the reader, like some sort of little guard dog of sorts who probably has claimed the life of at least on person? yeah take that idea and make it a little more intense because uh oh! hes now starting to have feelings for you and since theyre new there hasnt been time for them to mellow out and chill! do i think he would go the yandere route with you? no, but thats simply because the admin doesnt like the yandere trope in most cases. but do i think he would stick by closer to you and make excuses to hang around you? yes. does he come off as stalkerish if we are assuming the reader and masky dont actually have a relationship? oh yeah 100% but by default i write that you guys interact before any feelings are caught.. leaves you random stuff, like gifts.. or even "offerings" in your room to try to appeal to you and keep your attention. does get a little possessive about you, though

BRIAN:

i think out of the four hes the most open and loose with things, but thats only because of his more easy going and jokester nature (at least according to the silly wiki im reading and what i remember of him). basks in the fact that he can make you laugh and smile, i think thats something really important for him in general when it comes to you but i think it becomes an even bigger deal for him when he starts catching feelings for you. i also think out of the four hes the most likely to tell you about his feelings!

HOODIE:

more mellowed out version of masky, still carries some of brians boldness, i think. probably the third most likely to open up about his feelings, behind tim and before masky. also leaves you little gifts and such in your house somewhere for you to find, though i think he makes a game of it. masky leaves them in plain sight, while hoodie is going to make you look for it. more touchy than usual, tends to hold on longer when you guys share a hug or you pass something to him. also physically stands closer to you than before. the lingering stares. stuff like that. you probably think hes mad at you thanks to the mask and his intimidating height, but rest assured hes just trying to find the best opening to ask you to be his

your yellowjackets + soccer meta <3 i'm convinced and obsessed and would love to hear more!! do you have further character/relationship analysis you would like to share? (my personal fave is van having 100% save percentage and being seemingly unkillable she's so gonna beat stage IV cancer) and the missing attacking midfielder!! these ppl matched the characters' personalities with their soccer positions there is NO WAY that's not intentional. do you think she's an actual character we're yet to meet or just a symbol of the team being fractured? there's a missing link between defence+midfield and attack and so far allie's been yeeted right out of the plot and jackie died when the team froze her out and they tried to eat nat and she's very isolated from them and!!

i've heard the unkillable van theories and i think they have some merit im just not 100% on what it all means yet? especially since I think ? The writers planned to kill her off and then backed out of it. Idk i remember reading that somewhere. But it would be very goalkeeper-esque of her to leave treatment to the last minute, then miraculously recover.

But yeah the missing player thing is interesting because the corresponding missing number is 10. And that's Mari's number according to the wiki, though I dont think i've ever seen her wearing her numbered jersey. Of course the attacking midfielder doesnt have to wear a 10 its just tradition. Given thats theres 8 positions on a soccer field (and then 3 duplicates of them) its interesting we only know who played 7 of them. When theres 8 survivors and we only know 7, suddenly that choice to exclude a player feels relevant to that.

I dont know if this was meant to hint that Mari was or is meant to be the 8th survivor, or if that was changed at some point. I mean theres a girl wearing 16 in this photo

and thats Gens number so it should be Gens but we can clearly see it isnt actress ! Maybe its proto-gen and they hadnt cast the other actress yet idk. Either way, things might have changed since the pilot in terms of whose assigned what number anyway. I think all this could be very unspecific, and nothing much more than a tiny little visual nod to us not knowing who the 8th survivor is.

Being totally honest, I'm kind of leaning towards the idea that likeliest reason one player is missing from the starting line up is to hint at the unknown. The attacking midfielder is a playmaker, usually considered to be thee playmaker, pulling the strings for the attack. I think the unknown player is probably meant to represent the wilderness more than anything. The fact that Jackie was disconnected from the rest of the team by the wilderness, and the way thats mirrored by the missing attacking midfielder, then makes so much sense. The attackers on this team in general tend to get cast out one way or another, like you said; Allie never even makes the plane, Jackie never learns to cope with the wilderness, and Nats the first to be chosen to die, only to survive to die in a future hunt anyway. Shes also about to get diposed (in a not unsimilar way to jackie) if the trailers are anything to go by.

The fact its the attacking positions who are so specifically targeted kind of feels like the wilderness pulling out the teams teeth. We see how the teams thriving under Nat in season 3, adapting to their environment, but she cant people manage the petty fights that are starting. The leader they need now is Jackie, but the wilderness took her already, so its all going to fall apart.
