Please.....no more.....we had enough horror from the dreaded Cleo Netflix docuseries....just no more......

Wow it seems Sony is developing a new Cleopatra movie, and making auditions to Angelina and Gaga bc they still don't know who of these 2 will be The Queen. They say the movie will be a "bloody political thriller told from a feminist perspective". Do you have any hopes for this upcoming movie? And who would you rather see as Cleo, Gaga or Angelina? I personally hope "feminist political thriller" doesn't mean another shitty film like the new Mary Stuart movie.

Hollywood needs to stop looking at these powerful monarchs, that just happened to be women, and saying “feminism!”. Cleopatra wasn’t a feminist. Nothing about Cleopatra’s story was feminist. Cleopatra was born 2000 years before feminism was even a thing. There’s value in her story (and in the story of other women from history) beyond the “girl powerrr” narrative capitalism seems to have adopted in the last few years.

Anyway I digress. I think both options are awful. I would accept Gaga if this were a musical, and only because I really really want a Cleopatra musical (we’ve had enough dramas! I can think of at least four of them! Let’s try something different), but other than that, she just doesn’t scream Cleopatra to me. Jolie could’ve been an acceptable (and not good… just ok) choice some ten years ago, but at 43 she’s too old to play a woman who died at 39 and who will probably be as young as 21 in the movie. Either way, they are both really boring choices and I think that they are trying to go with Elizabeth-Taylor-As-Cleopatra more than with Cleopatra herself. I really liked Leonor Varela, our last movie Cleopatra, and wish they would go with someome more along those lines. 

Anyway, I’m not even sure if this movie is going to get made (the original project with Angelina has been on talks since for fucking ever) but even if it is, I think that people are being overdramatic about it. Maybe it will be bad. Maybe it will be good. Truth is, Cleopatra is one of those historical figures that for some reason or another we’re always going back to (we’ve had a video game and a netflix docudrama with her recently, and there are talks about both a movie and a tv show). There are things to hate and to love in most of these productions. If this movie sucks, if the casting is bad, it’s not the end of the world. And it’s too early to say anyway.
