What is your process for working this out?

long post ahead

fy00sh (aka aria-of-the-wind-god): so! when we get a new ask requesting a number for an artist, the first step is adding the requested artist to a spreadsheet greenzig and i use to work together on this project. they get added to the submissions list first, and then when we get to where they are on the submission list, one of us starts doing research on leads for what the artist's lowest number might be. usually i start by looking thru their discography on wikipedia (if they have one there) and then i also check on rateyourmusic dot com.

(greenzig: i don’t use wikipedia much if at all most of the time. depending on the kind of artist i will sometimes use rateyourmusic (its especially good for “internet artists” iykwim) but the primary way that i look is on discogs. unless i already have a connection in mind i will usually ignore the releases section and go to the credits tab)

ill first look thru their releases to see who all theyve collabed with, scanning first to see if any names i recognize pop out for artists who might themselves have low numbers or who we've already found connections for. once some connection is found, they get added to the masterlist, which looks like this

the masterlist is really useful because for example if im clicking thru on people credited alongside someone and i see that that person has worked with, say, umru, then i can just move the box for them on the sheet over to its new lowest position and also move anyone else already on the sheet if it affects them too, so theres a more robust reference for later. most of the artists that branch off from umru for example were parts of previous paths for ida deerz that slowly got moved closer to rick rubin as i found new connections (i think the first path i got for her was rubin > skrillex > dylan brady > underscores > 8485 > phixel > cmten > marshall4 > lizzy's personal army > ida, so thats why all those artists are still on there)

once we're reasonably certain that we have the lowest number we can find for someone, we mark them as completed on the submission list, and on the masterlist we mark them as needing to have a graphic made. during the process of finding the artist's number and adding them to the sheet i try to remember to add notes to each cell with a link to the wikipedia/rateyourmusic/discogs/bancamp/etc page of whatever the connection is, but earlier on i was pretty bad at remembering to do that which meant that greenzig or i would have to refind what the connecting track was during both the making of the graphic and the drafting of the tumblr post. 

(greenzig: we were both pretty bad at it tbh, i only really remembered to put the connection when it was through someone very behind the scenes like a mastering engineer that i knew would be difficult to find without knowing the song/project. also though i have made the images for quite a few posts, they are mostly done by fy00sh, it came up with everything and im basically just replicating what it does when i do make the images)

for making graphics, i open up paint.net (my preferred image editing software) and pull up the graphic template file, resave it under the name of whatever artist the graphic is for so i dont accidentally overwrite the template (i would never do that. i would never make that mistake. i definitely haven't made that mistake once already) and first crop the template to the right size and then add in all the text (artist names and connecting tracks/albums). next I'll go looking for images to use for each artist in the chain and save them all to my rickrubinnumber image folder

once the images are added and all the extra stuff around the edges (corners of images outside the bubbles, unnecessary template arrows at the left edge) i first save the file as a psd file and then remove the overlay and resave it as a png. I do it this way so that if a later graphic has a lot of the same connections i can just reopen the previous graphic's psd file and copy paste the image and text layers. that's also why i tend to keep old outdated versions of graphics around, cos they usually have different images in them that ive already done the work of centering and cropping. note the three different revisions of calobi's graphic - we changed that route a few different times before settling on the version we posted.

once the graphic is done, i'll go into the tumblr inbox, find the ask that requested the artist, begin to answer it by adding the graphic, and then i usually just save it as a draft and from there leave the writing of the description to greenzig. sometimes I'll add tags and the "[artist] has a Rick Rubin number of [#]." text but i usually don't.

greenzig: writing the image descriptions is a pretty straightforward process as its just providing some more context to the already found connection. we have actually had a few occasions where we’ll find out at this stage that one of the connections we’ve made breaks the rules we’ve set on the rulelist and have to start again, but that’s not very often. i think to best explain ill walk through an already existing post.

to make the connections as clear as possible, i make sure that the last part of the sentence im working on matches with the first part of the next sentence in a way that is congruous to the image. on this post, the first connections are:

Toby Fox was a composer on bo en's Prelude. Prelude features Alto Clarinet performed by Melody English. Melody English provided backing vocals for You Can Never Go Home by The Dare.

notice how the wording changes. when the connection is being made through the song, the wording is “bo en’s Prelude”, but when the connection is being made through the artist, it is “You Can Never Go Home by The Dare”. also note the names that are bolded. since bo en is not part of the connections, his name is left unbolded. then, skipping to the last connection between skrillex and rick rubin, this is how it is worded:

Skrillex was a writer and producer for M.I.A.'s Marigold. Marigold was written and produced by Rick Rubin (among others).

its easy to see the differences here, as rick rubin and skrillex are both credited for the same thing on the song. 

(fy00sh: i think the only exception so far to the rule of having lines begin or end with artists' names is the set of lines i wrote for the connection between jan Misali and Sapaa in the original, now outdated, jan Misali post. this is because the connecting song was a toki pona song and so i thought it would be cute to have the lines written in toki pona. the issue being that i dont have a lot of experience with writing in toki pona so i wasn't gonna try to find a way to rephrase the toki pona sentences to put jan Misali's name at the beginning and Sapaa's at the end. i was just happy i found a phrasing i was satisfied with at all ^_^) 

the only other thing to note is that i will usually try to list the most “noticeable” contribution someone had. being a writer and being a producer are about the same in that they’re very behind-the-scenes positions, but if someone is a featured artist, regardless of what other credits they have on the track, ill simply make the connection as either

Artist One’s Song featured Artist Two

or

Artist Two was featured on Song by Artist One

depending on which one is needed to keep the formatting.

fy00sh: and that's just about it, once the graphics and descriptions and tags are all done we post it, maybe waiting if theres another post coming up where the path is entirely contained within the other post so it isn't completely redundant. okay this was originally part of my roommate rant post but imma do it separately because its more of a critique of a mindset:

I do not understand rapid completionist collecting culture

i know what youre saying, "eve, what the fuck are you talking about that makes no sense" let me explain

theres probably a proper term for it but I've noticed a worrying trend specifically in online spaces recently of rapid completionist collecting culture. basically a subculture of wider collectors which focuses on the attainment of a "complete collection" as fast as possible and often with a disregard for the actual content of what they are collecting. i have seen posts about this in comic collecting forums. ive seen similar kinds of posts on video game forums. my experience with it has been through my roommate though, who i will kind of vaguepost about (nothing new for this blog tho).

My roommate, who we'll call Adam (not his real name) for the sake of brevity, has a real strange relationship with these cultures. I first noticed it soon after i moved in with him, when he decided to watch every publicly available tv show and movie that marvel has made,,, ever,,, including every ,,, single ,,, saturday ,,, morning ,,, cartoon. this small feat took months. all catalogued in a nice tidy spreadsheet noting the runtime of them, the episode count of the shows, which storylines were adapted (iirc), and his overall rating (again iirc). this was not a months long project because oh he only watched an episode or two a day, no not at all. i would leave for work with some x-men cartoon playing in our living room and come home to fantastic 4 playing instead. every day. hours upon hours. it was not a simple, "oh one day ill watch them all eventually". it was a dedicated marathon of back to back to back marvel. it honestly completely burnt me out on all things superhero just being in proximity to it.

so what is there to take from this? "let people like stuff!" "its just a show why are you so mad?" well its hard to put my finger on it to be honest without sounding pretentious or hyperbolic. ill try my best...

first lets get pretentious!

i personally find this style of engaging with content to be very shallow. ive always kind of had a bone to pick with background watching, having a show on while doing some other task, but this is different. while background watching is annoying imo, most of the time people are doing so with shows that are kind of built for that (think sitcoms or light dramas) where you can kind of tune in and tune out on a whim and the point is more on the other activity that the show is the background stimulation for (i.e. homework, sewing, cooking, hanging with friends, etc.). in short, when background watching, the point is not to really watch the show. so that should be the polar opposite to what my friend was doing, right? nope! all these stats and all this time, just to usually be playing destiny or scrolling through DiscussingFilms' twitter posts for most of it. this is a recipe for not really getting anything from these shows.

secondly, the binge model is kind of horrible for story engagement or thematic understanding. there are very few stories in long form media which adapt well to binging. it has been discussed before, so im not going to re-litigate those arguments here, but suffice to say that binging is bad actually. pair that with these shows mostly being background fodder and it just strikes me as profoundly pointless.

Maybe I just have different wants from my media than others, but i usually like my media to have a point beyond just "it looks cool" or "it belongs to an ip i like". spin offs dont really excite me unless theres a reason for it to exist beyond just "hey look at this cool side character! guess what? theyre a main character now!" yes a lot of good stuff has come from "spin off" series (look at puss in boots: the last wish as just one example), but their mere existence will never excite me. i prefer to really watch movies or tv shows that im interested in: dim the lights, grab some popcorn, and set aside time to really engross myself in every detail. its not for every show and it is a little time consuming, but the depth in every piece of art that you learn to see is so worth it. but maybe thats not everyone priority.

okay now lets get hyperbolic!

im not going to sugar coat this and itll sound weird, but i see a lot of similarities between this kind of hyper obsessive yet shallow fixation and some very very disgusting subcultures online. and i dont mean that because i dont understand them. i mean that because i am sadly referencing many of the boys and young men who fall down the alt-right pipeline through porn fixation. if you do not know what i am talking about, youll have to trust me on this because i do not think that anyone should look these things up on their own because good god every trigger warning possible applies if you look at some of these peoples accounts. they make my stomach churn and i am pretty resilient to things. basically for those who dont know, what im referring to is a subculture of predominantly young men who become obsessed with porn and porn stars to the point that it is all they can think about. if this is giving hints of incels, it should because the venn diagram is actually just a smaller circle within a larger circle. their obsession and incel nature leads them to the expected political and social beliefs: misogyny, transphobia, grooming, forced marriage, etc. truly some of the worst humans.

now is this a leap? admittedly yes. but i dont think the comparison isnt without merit. the initial actions are the same and both lead to heavy levels of social isolation. sure you have your in group that understands every reference you make, but beyond them, you become stunted. that social isolation is the most dangerous fuel for a man to have.

overall thesis

i could write at length about this topic (and who knows i might one day) but ill keep it brief for now. in short, this trend of hyper obsessive binging that ive seen is extremely confusing to me at best and potentially dangerous at worst. i wish i had a way to break people's habits with this kind of thing but sadly i do not know how.

Today was weird. I dont exactly know what I even accomplished. But it wasn't a bad day. I am a little sad we arent camping already like we had planned. But we will leave in the morning and it will be a great trip.

We went to bed early last night and I slept in a little bit. I woke up around 930 and James had made a puff pastry. We had breakfast and while I worked on my styling that got rid of my whole queue, James recorded their first podcast with their friends. It's mostly about sports, it was nice to hear them a little from the other room, laughing and talking. It was nice.

I was pleased to see some new items added to the shop, and the client notes are on their pages now and I don't have to go search for them in a spreadsheet. My laptop is a little laggy but I went as fast as normal and it was fun picking pieces for people.

Once I was done me and James got ready to go to the grocery store. We made a list for what we would need for camp. And after checking in with Noelle we headed out.

I think we did a good time. Last time we had some food issues, but we only get better every time. We couldn't find any corn, but Noelle found some at her store. We would end up going to the natural food store where I found the hotdogs I like. And it was fun talking to the cashier there who recognized my Calder tattoo. So that was exciting for me.

I made James laugh really loud in the car and it made my heart feel good. We made one more pit stop at Walgreens but they didn't have what I was looking for so its whatever.

We went home and once the food was put away or starting to get prepped, we started bringing down our stuff to the car.

One the second time down James realized they left the keys in the apartment. So we were both locked out of the car and the house. With no phones. Thankfully someone came out in the yard and James was able to get in. But I was left on the sidewalk with our things for a few minutes. It was nice to just sit though so it wasn't so bad.

James did some cooking and I would just chill on the couch for a while. I was doing good for a while there. But then I was getting more and more on edge. I was tired but couldn't sleep. I would go through my bags to make sure everything was there I needed. James packed their bag too.

I spent a little time in the studio. I did my eyebrows. I gave myself a hair cut, just a trim of dead ends and bangs. I took a shower. And then Brandon was here.

It was nice to see Brandon but I was also frustrated. I wanted them to go to their game. But they were taking forever to leave. And I don't know why but I really really needed to be alone.

I think a lot of my on edge feelings has been I have not had any time alone for what feels like forever. And its been hard on me emotionally. I hate saying it, because it makes me feel selfish. But I need to be alone sometimes, and even having the door closed to the studio doesn't feel the same as being home alone. No one is going to ask me what Im doing, so I don't feel judged. Its dumb but its how I feel.

Since they left I have been having a nice time hanging out. I had a snack. I tried on my dress again. I played with pinning the fabrics and changing the neckline. I want a square neck and since I need to raise the waist anyway I believe I am able to change it through this. I will still take it to a tailor but I am pretty sure I know what needs to be done.

I have been laying in bed texting with Jess. I tried to play videogames but it wasn't interesting. So now I am in bed hanging out. It is nice to just be in my own company.

I am really excited about tomorrow though. We are going to Berlin first to go antique shopping. Getting Christmas presents mostly. And lunch. And then we will head to the campgrounds. Im excited to see the ocean. The weather is supposed to be nice, but it can get cold at night. So I hope we have enough cozy things.

arkus’s birthday and some background info on him

SO ive been very busy with work these past two weeks AND sick with several things SO NOW TO MAKE UP FOR MISSING ARKUS’S BIRTHDAY (WHICH WAS ON JANUARY 3RD), im gonna talk about his research

here he is hard at work in his favorite part of the Priory: the ~secret~ library

everything else is under the cut because there’s a lot of science babble, but i do hope it’s fun to read if youre into science as much as i am. i also included some sylvari-centric stuff at the end because it’s specific to arkus

so simply put: Arkus’s concentration is on a mixture among anthropology (not just human-centered either), archaeology, and geology. separately, these sciences are completely different and require different skill sets, mindsets, tools, and research tactics, but these sciences also intersect in many ways and tell a fuller and more comprehensive story when put together. consider a nomadic culture that subsists on farming and animal products: they make clear boundaries in the land between where you sleep, where you eat, where you grow the food, where you cook the food, where you prepare animal parts either for consumption in one area or the creation of materials or clothing, ETC, my point is that this group needs a specific type of landscape to settle--that type of landscape needs to be sheltered enough from weathering and predators while also close to a water source, and the land itself must contain the right nutrients to grow crops; furthermore, the general landscape must be well-liked by large animals that are high enough in quantity that the group can sustain themselves on these animals and not risk endangering the population. the geology of the earth itself, the makeup of the land, is vastly important to this culture because it deigns where they can live and how they can survive in that area

of course, when they move away, they leave behind an imprint in the land itself--these cultures are not the type to necessarily bury their dead for fear of leaving them behind, but that’s also an extrapolation on my part so i cant definitively say that, but theyre also not necessarily the type to waste or throw away animal parts--so this group might not necessarily leave the obvious archeological choice of bones behind, but bones are not the only types of fossils that exist, and they certainly arent the main focus of archaeologists on digs: archeologists are looking for everything in an area--remains of encampments, clothing, pottery, tools, etc. these are the things a nomadic group might leave behind if theyre broken or unusable or perhaps if a disaster struck, and great swaths of belongings had to be left behind. lots of things are left behind when a group like this moves away--furthermore, evidence of a large group living in a place for what we can assume is several years to decades can almost always be found in each of those locations for a culture that is nomadic. archaeologists look for that evidence, and it’s the sort of thing they can follow like a map to see the direction in which this group moved

of course, the culture of that group itself is very important and just as fascinating as the prior fields of research: consider whether this group in my example might have a hierarchy--are elders the leaders of the group? is there a matriarch or a patriarch? how are children raised, and are they raised in a manner that separates them by gender, combined with the types of work or activities these genders are expected to perform? i read about a culture where the women did the foraging and held baskets at all times, and the men did the hunting and held bows and arrows at all times, but before this makes you mad and think that this culture might have been very strict on their gender conforming, the only gender “marker” in this society was that of the baskets or the bows. regardless of sex or gender at birth--concepts this culture had no definition of beyond the gendered tasks--if you wanted to hold a basket, you are a woman; if you wanted to hold a bow, you are a man. and you’re held to that standard until you decide you want to change that. there are also cultures ive read about where food is very closely linked with the cycle of life--there are some foods you eat when you are young, there are some foods you eat when someone is pregnant, and there are items to eat when someone dies, and everything has a very specific meaning assigned to it along with when and how those items are consumed.

all of these fields coalesce in different ways, and my passion for it is also Arkus’s. i imagine he goes out several times a year to conduct field research--something that is also very particular, and no two people do field research the same way, especially when it comes to soft sciences. i will also say that Arkus’s preferred style of research is one that has a little bit of discourse in the science community, and that is that he lets himself get involved with the culture.

in the soft science world, there are two pretty big styles: Positivism and Antipositivism (also called Interpretivism but ive definitely heard it called naturalism too). positivism is clean-cut--it’s objective and empirical scientific Fact. we’re talking quantitative data analysis, objective reasoning and observation (observation ONLY), and a clear separation between Scientist and Subject. 

antipositivism is the opposite--it’s not all data points and “objective” observation because to observe a culture without being part of it is not objective at all. you’re not learning about the culture if youre just watching it; you’re watching this culture from an outsider’s perspective, and from an outsider’s perspective with a completely different cultural background in mind, you will not understand the significance to any cultural action in front of you. in this way, the scientist is not separating themselves from the “subject(s);” rather, the outsider is interacting with and empathizing with the insiders. it’s a completely different mindset and one that yields results that almost cannot be measured on data points or spreadsheets.

(if you cant tell, i am an antipositivist lol)

Arkus is an antipositivist: he finds positivist thinking to be too clinical and perhaps inappropriate for his research purposes. that said, he goes out and locates groups like the vague culture i described above, and he learns about them through empathic interaction and openness. he doesnt always publish his work, but he does always ask his participants if they would like to be participants, and if not, then he helps them if they would like the interaction or leaves if they would prefer he not stick around. and that’s okay too! what he does publish is always very lengthy and involves detailed diagrams of rock formations, tools, structures, the landscape, etc, and if he’s in a position to do a dig, he may take samples of the landscape back to the Priory for further testing, especially when it comes to carbon dating or whatever the tyrian equivalent might be (the lifeforms are PROBABLY carbon based on tyria but you never know lol). at this point in the story, Arkus has been doing research for several years now--i haven’t decided when he becomes an archon, but it’s certainly his biggest career goal overall. i think it’s probably tough though because archons typically oversee really dangerous magics and sciences, so one of these days, Arkus will find a way to present his work as especially useful for that specific realm of study

i also think that with arkus’s background in a culture that is largely mysterious to other cultures is also part of why arkus has his passion for his work. to learn and discover things about culture while being simultaneously respectful and open to differences is very important to arkus, and it’s something that his culture has a particular closeness with given their history with--for EXAMPLE--the asura. no tea no shade but arkus isnt trying to be that type of way--but they also changed and got better over time; now arkus just has beef with the inquest because their research style and scientific process is the exact opposite of how arkus wants to be

i should also say--and i havent really seen really problematic evidence of this in the game--that research organizations such as the durmand priory have a tendency to be sorta...... grabby with their research. like there’s a big scientific attitude towards discovery in the modern world where the scientist(s) who discovered something feel Entitled to that discovery. it’s very western and ethnocentric, and it’s Bad. western scientists discovering x y z historic item that is important to an overseas culture’s history does not belong in a western museum or lab, i dont make the rules! unfortunately, the western scientists make the rules so like thems the brakes but let the record show i hate that

arkus is very aware of this scientific tendency to want to hold on to discoveries and sort of keep them close--safe even, in priory custody--but he also recognizes that it’s wrong to do that, so he specifically finds ways to work around that so the culture in mind gets to keep their history. sharing history and culture is really good and healthy for all cultures, but ONLY if that sharing isn’t forced or pressured onto the culture in question. arkus lives by that rule!

anyway, this was obviously just a way for me to gush about science under the guise of my character’s belated birthday, but i hope it was informative! i had fun with it ;u; and i’ll start drawing my characters again too dhfgadjfhg soon i hope

my binders/locker in grade school were stuffed with so much shit i couldnt find anything...always crumpled up papers, trash etc

chewed pencils/pens, broke them taking them apart in class, lost them, often didn’t have one, frequently borrowing them and forgetting to give them back to the point that certain people wouldn’t give me pencils

could comprehend reading i liked very well, but when we’d have reading groups with boring books id always be lost,  or when the teachers would have one on ones and have u read something short and ask questions after to assess ur reading level, they’d often have to tell me to read it again bc they knew how much i remembered didnt add up to my intelligence and reading speed 

moms college friend gave me an unoffical iq test and i did much worse than i know i shouldve on the reading portion bc she’d play a story and then ask me after to list every detail i could remember and i couldn’t remember anything. but when she played 10 numbers and asked me to say them out loud backwards i scored extremely high ?

couldnt do projects, would be in tears, last minute every time, parents mad bc i need a poster board RIGHT NOW ITS DUE TOMORROW . hated assigned reading, horrible at essays even when they helped us plan them. 

i remember my 7th grade social studies teacher assigning a paper, i wrote extremely detailed and well in the first paragraph or 2, and the following ones got shorter and shorter and were completely bullshit bc i got bored. she told me ‘really strong first paragraph.’ and gave me a B  

talk too got damn fast. customers constantly telling me to slow down bc they cant understand me

my mom always says she had to challenge me as a kid bc i would get bored and get in trouble. i was acting out bc i was understimulated, i happened to like learning (esp numbers and puzzles) bc smart so that’s what i could fixate on and felt stimulated by

lunch detention frequently in 8th grade in my first highschool class, algebra, bc i wouldnt do my homework, at one point he just stopped giving lunch detention for that bc i wouldnt do it. i hated that class bc the math was boring and i never paid attention but would somehow pull off a’s and b’s on tests so i ended up with a B. my first B, and i had brought that up from a D (told my mom it was almost a C, he gave a really hard test and we all did bad etc, when she had to sign a paper about my low grade) at the end of the year, during the exam i was so confused the whole time, it was my first highschool exam and i didn’t know ANYTHING. i ended up with a 92 from guessing, and a curve, and every one of my friends got at least a 93 or better and i felt so stupid bc i was supposed to be the best at math

i would take every highschool class in honors but not one english class bc it required more essays and summer reading and i knew i wouldnt do the reading and would cry over the essays

the only other class i didnt take honors was chemistry bc i knew the honors teacher had a lot of projects and i would be stressing over them. i ended up with an A in the standard chem class even tho i never finished any work in class and didnt do homework, but i was still the smartest in the class and did the best overall

lunch detention for forgetting to get papers signed like report cards. they weren’t even bad grades i just couldnt remember. one time i got actual detention for forging my moms signature bc i got lunch detention for several days straight bc i kept forgetting to get the paper signed 

often had permission slips waiting to be signed the day before the field trip, or told my mom it was picture day the day before or morning of. one time i totally forgot it was picture day and didnt dress up

acting out and not thinking ab the consequences, many referrals.. many more times that my teachers let me get away with acting out when someone else doing the same thing would’ve been punished. one time anna and i left in the middle of class to go with emma to the library, only emma had permission, and my teacher had anna and i do wall sits instead of going to the office. in gym in middle school i would never dress out. i hated the clothes and hated gym bc i was awkward and if we didnt dress out we had to copy pages out of the health textbook the entire time and i would barely write 2 paragraphs bc i was so bored and my hand hurt and he never did anything ab it. i wouldnt dress out at least twice per week if not more. told my mom I had a C bc he had it out for me but i was the problem

in elementary school if we didn’t come to gym day wearing the right shoes we had to go into the back and pick out a pair of sneakers that fit out of a box of shoes, and also borrow socks if necessary. i had to do this frequently bc i never remembered to wear the right shoes

i would extremely often forget my library books and have to sit on the couch waiting for everyone to pick out their books for half an hour

when we were even younger we’d have story time and you had to sit in the middle of the floor inside a big circle of chairs where everyone else was if you forgot your library books. i lost one at one point for months and my parents didnt just pay for it so i had to sit in the middle every time. we found the book on a shelf somewhere in the house 

my chorus teacher never liked me bc i talked too much and i always felt like the worst singer, not bc of my singing but bc she wasn’t ever nice to me

in 7th grade science we learned latin root words and every day we’d play a game where we all stood up and one by one he’d ask for a root and we’d give it. if you got it wrong on the first round you’d have to write it on a piece of paper x amount of times and turn it in. if you were the last person left you were allowed to sit on your desk for the rest of the year, during these games while everyone else had to stand up. i wanted so badly to sit on my desk, esp bc i was fidgety and couldnt stand still, but i would never study them bc i’d forget or not want to if i did remember, even tho i really wanted to know them and sit on my desk. that teacher had a huge soft spot for me and one day i just started sitting on my desk during those. everyone knew i was smart, and it was all the smart kids who got to sit on their desks, so no one questioned it. im not sure if he knew i wasnt supposed to and just let me, or didnt realize i hadnt won bc i was smart. 

hyperlexia? mom said i could practically read before i was taught. i’ve always obsessively air written, ie writing words out w my finger in the air, on my leg etc. 

esp during lectures i doodle excessively to the point that my papers margins have always been covered with random scribbly overlapped words, or song lyrics. the words are usually something someone in the class said. ive started keeping an extra sheet of paper just for scribbling when im taking notes or listening in class. when we finished end of year tests in school i would write down full lyrics to songs on my scrap paper so i wouldnt be so bored. my hand cramps up so much but it was better than staring or trying to sleep with the lights on

at big lots when i had to run the register i was so painfully bored , fidgety, had to sneak my phone soo much bc i was so bored. when i was on the floor i would put away the go backs very quickly and then take upon myself a project like going through the entire wall of individual drinks and pulling out all the expired ones, it was like 5 carts full. my manager put me in charge of organizing the entire makeup section and all the gross clearance makeup bc she knew id do it the best and fastest 

when bosses have me do inventory i can count the products super fast and efficiently, but then when they have me put them into a spreadsheet i stare at it for hours getting nothing done bc distracted and its boring. ammar told me if i’d just get off my phone i could get it done bc he’d been asking for it for weeks, i wasnt trying to ignore it 

when im trying to do something at work that needs more concentration, i want to cry with frustration whenever i hear the door chime and have to get up and help customers and break my focus

So the challenge has been posted and it's cute!! I like this challenge because it allows me to think critically and analytically!! I am currently putting in WORK in the challenge but my tribe is flopping lmaoo. I'm trying my best to give them tips and tell them to mimic the common things I'm finding and apply it to their own pairings but something isnt clicking!! Hopefully we can pull out a win!

At this point I am preparing for tribal council. Jay announced the scores for the challenge and our tribe was down by 30+ points and in last place. An actual alliance (our alliance name) decided to vote David off if we go to tribal again because of his problematic behavior and mean comment to GiGi that he totally didn't say lmaoo. The challenge is basically up I'm ready to forfeit and go right to tribal.

So Suzy and Charlie do not seem to be contributing at all. This is fine I  guess since it just puts a bigger target on their backs as a result. I am just tired of these useless tribe members. Maybe it'd be better to go to tribal in order to vote them off so that they cannot turn on fellow Tuai members later since they wouldn't have that strong of a connection with us.

Flint just complimented me on my good work in the challenges. It seems that my challenge performance is being noticed. I am trying to establish ties with a fair amount of people while we are in the One World. For one, I want to become friends with both Raul and Kathleen. I've also talked to Lysandre a bit and think he's alright. Let's hope I can establish myself socially in this game!

I must say that people are coming to me like bees to pollen. They all want to talk to me which makes the most sense since they all want to be social. Though some are better at it than others. I've been getting really good vibes from Lysandre, Kathleen, Apollo, and Marie. In that order. They just seem like good people. Also, Marie is 13!? Shook! I did gather some intel though from these people. Apparently, on Mea, David is at the bottom for being a rude-ass and being abrasive. That means if I am on a tribe with David, he will definitely be a target which might help later down the line. Marie is also very upfront and blunt. She asked me immediately "Who is on the bottom of your tribe?" Like girl. Be subtle. I'm not giving info out that easily so I just said no one even though it is clearly Charlie. Everyone on Mea though has mentioned this "bitch" who's on the bottom for being rude. It's David. I'm just so shook that they all are giving out this information that easily. It didn't take long for Marie to start spilling everything to me. She could be valuable as a rat later down the line so long as I don't tell her too much. Though it's great to finally have social ties that could carry me to merge.

"It seems my socializing has paid off! Firstly, I was chosen as leader for one of the new tribes. I got to choose people for my new tribe that I would be making. I definitely saw this coming, so it was good that I was able to choose them myself. I feel confident with my new tribe. Everyone, except Boris, I have talked to at least once so that'll help. I think I have picked people that enable me to have power over everyone else if I play my cards right. How I see it: I have aligned with Joey, Lysandre, and Rual. I have talked a bit with Zest, and Boris I am just getting to now. I have talked extensively with Apollo. He and I have bonded really well. Perhaps that will keep me safe for the time being. Mainly why I picked the people I did is to have easy boots earlier on (Zest and Boris) and to have people I'm already aligned with be with me (Joey, Raul, and Lysandre). Secondly, my socializing has paid off in terms of immunity. I definitely saw myself having a bunch of connections, but I didn't know it amounted to being the most popular. I think, socially, I have positioned myself well. Now I just got to keep this momentum up in order to succeed! Hopefully, everyone I am aligned with makes it to merge. It might be hard for Flint since he is on vacation. In hindsight, I should have picked him since it would be easier to explain his situation if I was there. I hope he doesn't get a target on his back for being inactive tonight! I think that they might vote out David since he is annoying. I told Cassie and Flint this, so maybe they can use that to their advantage.

Finally, I think this might paint a huge target on my back. People are going to know I am very well-liked by a lot of people. If they carry that information with them, they could use it against me. First and foremost I’d like to introduce myself and background of relationship between her and I.I have been her best friend/close friend since 3rd grade. (18 years) We have had ups and downs and truly she was an amazing person in my life. We were like fire and ice two complete opposites but never the less an important person in my life. Wether they forced her or intimidated her to doing it I’ll never know. And when being honest and confronting her on these changes she outright denied it and said she was just scared and being ‘herself’.

@EmmaSwanna on twitter had given Janna a collection of pokemon merchandise valued at the very least of 200 USD in promise she would receive commissioned art pieces including a cover for a fanfiction she was writing. Janna agreed to These terms literally over a year ago and never said or even showed she attempted to work on it.

A year later comes (Present time) and Emma and I send her about 100 each for commissioned art as she was in a rut and needed creativity/update portfolio/and wanted to do charms. (Dec 2016) also sending detailed commission info via email and even poses and references to help as well. only to get about one picture ($20 USD value each) and magically got a refund of 80 each in April Which was 4 months later with no explanation as to why she couldn’t fulfill her commissions only that we were close friends and understood. While it may seem her chibis are cute and cheap I warn you that if she does NOT feel like drawing it she won’t and will attempt to draw herself things. Unfortunately this is not a good way to conduct business especially self promoting your artwork. The fact of the matter is she took advantage of two friends because we would be understanding and patient or maybe forget about it. That’s all I’m saying on the matter. below lines im going to go more into detail about how she WRONGED @EmmaSwanna and I for all of our mutuals that want to know what happened.

So this is for any mutuals of Emma and I that want to know what happened or are curious.

So this is just in GENERAL what she has done to Emma and I over the course of a year having a group chat together. for the most part she was a good friend and easy to talk to. However we had only recently stopped being friends right before we had all went to Acen (I’ll get into that later) She had first gotten extremely aggressive towards Whitney and I when we were very much hardcore into in the pokemon fandom. She claimed/HC’d the character N was asexual therefore Emma’s OC couldn’t be with him. As well as Janna making her own and forcing him on Emma’s OC as well. Eventually it got to the point of claiming certain canon pokemon characters were yandere and if you had an opposing thought she got angry and would yell at you via chat. This is literally ONLY the tip of the iceberg.

She has made it a point to also make Emma feel bad she hasn’t played or cared much for the Legend of Zelda(just as she made me feel like shit for not caring much for the persona series) saying how the mean so much to her and how dare we have opposing views on the series or generally dont care much for them. Including trying to force us to watch things we didn’t care to or guilt trip us into watching it (ex. constantly asking if we had watched it yet) 

Janna has also made it a point to make Emma hysterical on her birthday from our weekend skype movie nights. Watching Once upon a time and seeing a pair of scissors and sleeping drugs, Janna was triggered and proceeded to yell at Whitney and then make her cry making the call very awkward and was only apologizing so Whitney wouldn’t leave her as a friend as opposed to apologizing FOR acting out and yelling. But yet was FINE around these items in Persona and has watched plenty of horror playthroughs with more graphic images. After some time we eventually all started talking again and everything SEEMED fine for at least a while.

What really showed me how much a friend she truly was/thought of me was nearing a month before her Emma and I had planned on going to Acen together. Janna had set RULES for our hotel but primarily me. Such as I wasn’t allowed to drink alcohol period (I’m 22 btw) and Not allowed to leave her alone after 4pm (even if we had opposing panels). Being respectful and trying to understand where all of this was coming from I agreed as she had never been to a big convention before and wanted to help her overcome anxiety in one of the ways i only knew how. I had even offered to refund her badge if she felt she couldn’t handle the stress (which she took as me not wanting her to go) and was making it a point to EMPHASIZE she was nervous. She constantly made statuses about how she was nervous and she was going to have a bad time despite HER setting ALL the rules and regulations. Since I work in the hospitality industry I managed to get our hotel for free and asked she chip in for gas (literally the ONLY thing she was responsible for) and I guess I have no ‘right’ to get angry she didn’t offer to help with anything else but I was. Emma who had spent 400 on a plane ticket and luggage STILL offered to help whatever ways she could and really made it one of the best times ever. Eventually she made Emma and I make a spreadsheet of EVERYTHING and what times they were she could have a guide and reference. only to have her have a breakdown on skype claiming we would leave her and what not. only the very next day when asking her where a specific food she liked was located called me huffy and that’s when i broke down and told her she wasn’t going with me anymore. I had been more than accommodating and trying to be nice. She wanted me to dump her as a friend AFTER we went just so she could still go and hang with Emma at the expense of me being upset. She kept trying to weasel back in and telling me to “reconsider” so she could go and trying to convince me I was making a mistake. Finally after she acccepted she wasn’t going she messaged our group saying “Well can you at least drop off Emma to hang out with me the day before you leave.” NEVER ASKING EMMA WHAT SHE WANTED, and texting her saying that she hoped she had fun and guilt tripping the shit out of her. We decided to leave it alone and not say anything to her and went to the con happy only to receive a message saying “Hope you guys are having fun” and me asking if she meant it in a good or bad. She not soon after removed Emma and I from all social medias and put DETOX as her header name referencing detoxing the ‘internet’ but truly meant her and I.

Hi all, I recently wrote this post about how Drip screwed over its most loyal customers and I thought perhaps /r/Entrepreneur would get value out of my lessons learned.----If you’re not familiar, Drip is email marketing software that’s pretty heavy on the marketing automation front. I won’t do them the courtesy of a link, so you’ll have to Google them if you want to check it out.They’ve been around since 2012 or so, founded by someone I trusted, but he sold the business to Leadpages a few years ago, and it’s been going downhill ever since.I’ve been using them for years as the backbone of two “side” businesses: IndieHive, which covers this website for freelancers and the related products and services that I sell, and Everleads, a curated lead generation site for freelance designers and developers.In 2016 and 2017, I really dug deep into Drip. I built out dozens of interconnected workflows to carefully shepherd my subscribers through various funnels and sequences with duplicate emails or annoying content that’s not relevant to them. I integrated my web front-end with their APIs so that I could customize the site for subscribers. I wrote bridging scripts to connect it to Mixpanel for analytics, and I used Zapier to hook Drip up to even more services. It was the heart of my entire business, and it was awesome.But throughout 2018, things started to go awry.I kept experiencing glitches in the workflows where people would get stuck on workflow steps that should be instant, like “remove tag”. Or people would end one workflow and start another, but not have any of the data that the first workflow had set. There were honestly dozens of these little glitches, but individually they were minor.Also troubling: deliverability started to slip. Not precipitously, and I can’t prove that it wasn’t just my emails, but I have heard from others that they were having issues with getting their emails into people’s inboxes in 2018.But the most egregious thing for all of this was that support was basically no help at all. I probably opened two dozen support requests in 2018 and I’m not sure they actually resolved a single one. We’d spend hours going back and forth so they could even understand the problem. Then they’d almost always say one of two things:“For a workaround, just insert a number of delays between steps in your workflows so that the system doesn’t get confused!” So all my workflows had little 5 minute delay steps to try and make sure things worked correctly. Which they still didn’t. Wtf.Or they’d just say they need to escalate to the developers and then I’d get an email weeks or months later from some random support engineer letting me know they were still looking into why the most basic functions of their software don’t work right. Awesome.Alarmed by this, I repeatedly researched alternatives throughout 2018, but nothing seemed worth going through the pain of migration and the risk of just having similar issues somewhere else. So I kept resolving to be patient with Drip and hope (pray) that they were hard at work at undoing whatever architectural disaster had led us here.And then…In early January 2019, while I was on a relaxing cruise with my wife for our 15th anniversary, I got an email from Drip:https://ryanwaggoner.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/drip-bullshit-pricing-email-2.pngSo basically: “Hey, we’re raising our prices in 12 days! You can keep your current price if you switch to an annual plan!”And if you read it carefully, there’s something pretty important missing from this email.It doesn’t say what the new pricing is**. Seriously wtf.**So I emailed to ask. They responded the next day (so now I have 11 days) to reveal they were doubling my monthly price.Drip raised my price from $184 / month to $368 / month with 12 days notice.That’s just about the worst way imaginable to treat your oldest and most loyal customers.And it was the last straw for me.Now, to be clear, I completely understand wanting to grow a company in a new direction, or thinking that you need to raise prices to reflect more value.But you don’t do it when your platform is half-broken, you don’t do it with 12 days notice, and you grandfather in existing customers, at least for long enough for them to migrate. Also, you tell them the price when you tell them that prices are rising.It’s hard to imagine how Drip could have been more disrespectful to their customer base than what they did here.So as of last month, I switched all my subscribers to ConvertKit and ActiveCampaign for Everleads and IndieHive, respectively. That’s thousands of dollars that Drip won’t be getting from me. I managed to get both setups completely migrated off just before their billing renewal dates, in one case with literal minutes to spare.It was a pain and required some late nights but it was worth it to deny them another penny.I’m not alone in feeling upset about this. Twitter was ablaze for weeks with people who were angry and bailing for greener, more respectful pastures. I’ve taken a sick joy in watching a lot of people migrate off Drip with much larger lists than mine.I also cancelled Leadpages in favor of Instapage. I was already unhappy with Leadpages, mainly because it feels pretty clunky and dated, they aren’t very responsive to user feedback, and they’re still missing some pretty basic things (like being able to pass form data to the thank you page. Seriously?).Side note: I was going to link to the Leadpages idea portal, but they apparently shut it down. Makes sense, since it was filled with hundreds of good ideas with many, many customer votes that had been ignored for years.Regardless, even if Leadpages was awesome, they own Drip and I won’t give another penny to such an unethical company that treats its customers so poorly.And this migration was a huge pain (which is what they were counting on), partly because of how complex my Drip setups were, but also because ConvertKit and ActiveCampaign are both pretty different from each other and from Drip. On the surface, they all do some of the same things, but once you dig in, things diverge, which made the migration especially painful.Drip is complicated. Stupidly so. In fact, it’s so complicated that there are a number of problems using it:It doesn’t really work. I mean, it does like 99% of the time, but that last 1% means that some of your subscribers are going to have a bad time. And it’s not just that their emails won’t show up. They might just get stuck in a workflow, or skip some emails in a sequence, or get things at the wrong times, or lose data, etc. And since this happens randomly, the number of subscribers who experience it accumulates over time.The customer support reps don’t really know how it works, because it’s too complicated. So you end up spending hours writing up descriptions of the problem and putting together screencasts to show how things don’t seem to be working, and the only response you get is that they’ll have to ask the developers.It encourages you to setup really fancy complex automations which, even if they did work, are way beyond what you actually need. Just imagine: you can do anything! You can track everything! You can have an unlimited number of tags and fields! Track and automate all the things!Your setup can end up being really brittle and deeply tied to the Drip architecture, which is a problem if you want to migrate off. And it’s hard to expand and modify over time without breaking all kinds of things for your subscribers who are in those automations.The setup is hard to document. It’s easy to end up with a large collection of documents and spreadsheets and screencasts to try and explain not only what you did, but why you did it.It’s hard to audit and debug when things go wrong. And things will go wrong. It’s hard to tell exactly what’s happening with your subscribers, where things went off the rails, and how to get it back on track without screwing things up further.In the end, Drip for me felt like a really shitty programming language. Technically possible to do almost anything, but so painful that in the end you wish you hadn’t bothered.By contrast, ConvertKit is simple. And yes, I think it’s too simple in places. I think there are some genuine gaps in the functionality that makes it a little too hard to get done the things you want.But I’m also aware of the fact that I’m coming from Drip and a really convoluted setup, so being forced to simplify is probably a good thing.And ActiveCampaign is not simple, but it’s powerful in a bunch of ways that Drip should have been. Additionally, it has the distinction of actually being, you know, functional. Crazy, I know.Also, ActiveCampaign apparently is more open to feedback than Drip. I posted a Twitter thread listing some things that I like about it and Jason VandeBoom, the founder of ActiveCampaign, setup a call with me to go over some of my feedback. And ActiveCampaign isn’t a tiny company; they have hundreds of employees and are much larger than Drip. It meant a lot to me that Jason would just jump on the phone with a random customer to see how they could improve.Meanwhile Drip’s emails aren’t even signed by an actual person. During this whole debacle, I don’t think anyone from Drip actually responded to anyone’s tweets or complaints. A couple days after the initial announcement when things were blowing up on Twitter, they sent this out another email that was basically "sorry, not sorry"Just like their price increase, all of their corporate communication just screams “We don’t care about you. Go away.”So I did.I’m actually really glad that I dropped Drip, after all that. Partly because of how much better ConvertKit and ActiveCampaign are as tools, but mostly because it taught me a lesson about how you need to be careful when you’re a small company about who you integrate with, because while your interests may align now, that could change at any point.But this rant has gone on long enough, so I’ll save that point for a future post.Disclaimer: just in case Drip decides to sue me (which would be so on-brand for them at this point), ALL the descriptions of Drip’s functionality, failings, and communications is to the best of my recollection and should not be taken as a literal word-for-word account.----Happy to answer any questions about my experience with Drip, ConvertKit, or ActiveCampaign. The water-bearers are charming and quirky. You probably met her when she was volunteering at the animal shelter you adopted your dog at. Shell always be unconventional and intellectual, and probably seems fairly easy going and upbeat. Shes the truest humanitarian, and knows her mind- when she makes a decision, she sticks with it.

Things will start to sour when all that unconventional, quirky energy becomes just plain annoying. Youll struggle to follow her logic since shell speak in obscure quotes and non-sequiturs. Aquarius being the most detached sign of the zodiac, youll find she doesnt really have any friends, just tons of different acquaintances from different backgrounds she collects. I'm looking for advice...and hopefully someone to tell me that I'm not screwed. My boss graciously offered to find group insurance for all of her employees and she is willing to pay 50% of the premiums. The problem is that she went with the most expensive plan on the market (that I've seen) and I simply can't afford it. The premium is $340 a month, so I'd be paying $170 which isn't bad...but the copays are at least +20% on everything and doctor visits range from $35 to $55 a visit, so I wouldn't be able to afford to use my health coverage often. It also doesn't include dental, which is what I really wanted/needed. I am 21 years old (and all of my coworkers are in their 20s), so I don't really understand why the payments are so high. I'm right in the midst of paying off student loans, I don't get paid very much, and I was hoping to start saving money to purchase a car and be able to go back to school. I was going to use my income tax return as a down payment on a car, but if I opt out of healthcare this year at least a fourth of that return will be taken as the fine imposed to coerce people to sign up for the Affordable Care Act. After twelve years of reading and writing about money, Ive come to love financial rules of thumb. Financial rules of thumb provide helpful shortcuts for making quick calculations and decisions. You dont always have time (or want to take the time) to create elaborate spreadsheets when choosing a course of action. In these cases, its nice to have some rough guidelines you can rely on. Youve probably heard of the rule of 72, for example. This shortcut says that if you divide 72 by a particular rate of return, youll get the number of years itll take to double your money. If your savings account yields 4%, say, it will take about 18 years for your nest egg to increase by 100%. But if you were able to earn 12% on your investment, that money would double in six years. Like all rules of thumb, the rule of 72 isnt precise. It doesnt give an exact answer but a ballpark figure. Financial rules of thumb dont always hold true. But theyre true enough for us to make loose plans based on them. I have some engineer friends whod get tense at this sort of sloppy guesswork, but most of the rest of us are happy to trade a bit of precision for speed. Thats what rules of thumb are all about! The trick, of course, is knowing which rules of thumb to use. Most are handy, but some common guidelines do more harm than good. Rules Gone Wild In the past, youve probably seen my rant about some of my most-hated financial rules of thumb. Lets look at three things I think conventional wisdom gets wrong (and what I believe are better alternatives). How much should you save for retirement? For instance, I get frustrated when I hear financial advisers push the idea that you should base your retirement savings on 70% of your income. Instead of estimating your retirement needs from your income, it makes far more sense to base them on spending. Your spending reflects your lifestyle; your income doesnt. I think a better rule of thumb for determining retirement needs is this: When estimating how much youll need to save for retirement, assume youll spend as much in the future as you do now. Use 100% of your current expenses to calculate your retirement spending. (And if you want to build in a safety margin, base your future needs on 110% of your current spending.) How much should you spend on a house? As I mentioned last week, another rule of thumb that makes me cranky is this common guideline espoused by all sectors of the homebuying industry: Buy as much home as you can afford. No no no no no! Of all financial rules of thumb, this is probably the worst. Its certainly one of the most prevalent. This is how folks end up house poor, chained to a mortgage they resent. Lenders quantify this guideline by saying your housing payments should be nor more than 28% or 33% or 41% of your income. But, as David Bach wrote in The Automatic Millionaire Homeowner, You should generally assume that the amount the bank or mortgage company is willing to loan you is more than you should borrow. A better rule of thumb? Spend as little on housing as possible. Spending less than 25% of your net income is best less than 20% is even better. How much life insurance should you carry? A third rule that bugs me is the one for determining how much life insurance you should buy. Different experts give different answers. Some say your policy should cover five times your annual income. Others say ten times. And Suze Orman recommends 20 times annual income needs. The truth is that not everyone needs life insurance. Like all insurance, its designed to prevent financial catastrophes. You only need it if other people like a spouse or children would face financial hardship when you die. If you dont have kids, if your spouse has a good income, or you have substantial savings, then life insurance isnt a necessity. Even if you do need life insurance, you probably dont need to carry as much as your insurance agent is willing to sell you. To find out the amount thats right for you, check out the Life Insurance Needs Calculator from the non-profit Life Happens organization. (How much life insurance should I carry? According to this calculator, I shouldnt have any at all. And I dont.)

According to the authors of The Millionaire Next Door, the following wealth formula can tell you if youre on target: Divide your age by ten, then multiply by your annual gross income. Your net worth should be equal to this number (less any inheritances). So, if youre 40 and make $50,000 per year, your net worth should be $200,000. If you have less than half the expected amount, youre an under-accumulator of wealth. If you have twice the target, youre a prodigious accumulator of wealth. (Note that the authors are well aware that this formula doesnt work well for young people; its meant to be used by folks nearing retirement age.)On average, each dollar an American spends represents about $2.50 of after-tax value in ten years or $10 in thirty years. (If you live outside the U.S., the consequences of spending that dollar are probably even greater.) This is due to two reasons: taxes and compounding. When you buy something, you spend after-tax dollars. On average, Americans have to earn $1.33 to have $1.00 left over.Inflation is the silent killer of wealth. In the U.S., inflation has averaged 3.18% over the past hundred years. A lot of folks figure a 3% inflation rate when making money calculations. I think its safer to assume 3.5% or even 4% average inflation in the future.Historically, U.S. stocks have earned long-term real returns (meaning inflation-adjusted returns) of about 7%. Bonds have long-term real returns of around 2.5%. Gold and real estate have long-term real returns of close to 1%.If you withdraw about four percent of your savings each year, your wealth snowball will maintain its value against inflation. During market downturns, you might have to withdraw as little as three percent. If times are flush, you might allow yourself five percent. But four percent is generally safe. (For more on safe withdrawal rates, check out this article from the Mad Fientist.)Based on the previous rule of thumb, theres a quick way to check whether early retirement is within your reach. Multiply your current annual expenses by 25. If the result is less than your savings, youve achieved financial independence you can retire early. If the product is greater than your savings, you still have work to do. (If youre conservative or have low risk tolerance, multiply your annual expenses by 30. If youre aggressive and/or willing to take on greater risk, multiple by 20.)Building on the above, Mr. Money Mustaches shockingly simple math behind early retirement gives us a useful rule of thumb for determining how long youll need to save before youre financially independent. Figure out your current saving rate (or profit margin, if you prefer). Subtract this number from 60. Roughly speaking and assuming youve started from a zero net worth thats how long youll need to work before your nest egg is big enough to support you in retirement. (Note that this rule breaks down at saving rates over 40%. If you save a lot, subtract from 70.)Joe from Stacking Benjamins likes what he calls the penny approximation: Assuming a safe withdraw rate of roughly four percent, every $100 you save gives you one penny per day in perpetuity. Once you stack enough Benjamins you have enough pennies to sustain you forever. If you change your own brake pads and save $200, thats two cents a day for the rest of your life because you avoided paying a mechanic.

I hate detailed budgets because they bog people down. Instead, Im a fan of budget frameworks that focus more on the Big Picture. My favorite budget framework is the Balanced Money Formula: Spend no more than 50% of your after-tax income on Needs, put at least 20% into savings (including debt reduction), and spend the rest (around 30%) on Wants. This is a great beginner budget, but its also useful for transitioning to the mindset of Financial Independence. If you decide early retirement is a goal, then part of your Wants spending becomes additional savings.If you own your home, its wise to set aside money for maintenance and repairs. Each year, contribute 1% of your homes current value to a separate account. If you dont spend the money, keep it there for future remodeling and improvements.Is it better to buy or to rent? The price-to-rent ratio is a useful rule of thumb for making this decision. Find two similar places, one for sale and one for rent. Divide the sale price of the one by the annual rent for the other.
