listening to noah's house music playlist while i bake festive gingerbread. i always listen to EDM while baking for christmas haha i dont know why. last year it was building a full on gingerbread house with galantis on play. its an upbeat but chill repetitive vibe for baking concentration and flow lol
so anyway, not to mention how he'd thrive in the gay club scene, this makes me feel like noah (not finn) would be the one into edging lol. everyone knows people who dance to ibiza club like delayed gratification. its all about THE DROP
personally im more about the beat and the nostalgic vibes. i grew up on rock music like finn, but im big into dancing and happy stuff too. sort of like you!
but yeah it got me thinking of mike and will in the club too. will is more of a rocker but mike loves the synths and would thrive as a wiry little minx in the club, dragging will to the dancefloor. in the end will becomes obsessed with it and loves showing off there and grinding up on mike, discovers music he never thought he'd like.
lastly i love that noah loves this more retro dance music. if he was into dubstep i would have to disown, sorry lol
EDM and baking, love that!! Definitely am with you there - I need something dancey or upbeat/chill as I cook or clean, that's essential. It's not even needing the "distraction" it's just a vibe when I'm doing something that needs focus. That music gives focus. But yes! I'm with you re: the club scene. I feel like there's so much we don't know about him. He cannot only be partying with the girlies. It's totally different. That's not broadcast to the world, though. I'm so curious how he dances in a real club, living in the moment. Because to be honest, tiktok "dances" aren't really anything. That's barely dancing. I feel like he's good though. A little clumsy, but sure of himself. I'm a bad dancer, but I don't care? I find this sort of music easy to let go to and do what you want. I see that for him.
this makes me feel like noah (not finn) would be the one into edging lol. everyone knows people who dance to ibiza club like delayed gratification. its all about THE DROP
Stopppp this is hilarious 🤣
So interesting that you picture Mike as the club kid, or as close to as possible for Mike Wheeler. I think I always put him as the more reluctant one because he's more prone to abrasiveness, stubborn. Scornfully latched to the bar or wall until coaxed out to dance but actually, fair point. Would Will really ever he the one leading the charge here? I don't think so at all, not at first. So I can kind of see this for Mike now that youve put quite the image in my head. A way to let go.
I think Will would dip into the underground music scene, the rise of grunge and little local shows, getting to yell and jump shoulder to shoulder at some small venue rock concerts. Love Mike continuing his synth loving ways as techno and dance comes up. I can see it. Dancing together with your lover in public especially their era? So important. Now, I don't see either of them being hard-core into either scene- they are still our lovely little nerds at heart - but even the nerdy guys deserve a night at the club here and there, letting go, allowing a night of fun and confidence.
And oh no. Please don't disown me for occasionally enjoying dubstep 🫣 Formative fascination as a kid hahaha it was sooo popular in middle school. I like so many varieties in the genre it's very diverse!! Heehee

domut let me in
first of all happy new year it's a great time i hope you'll slay the day away throughout 2024 but SECOND AND MORE IMPORTANTLY. i have a new favorite potato recipe.
https://youtube.com/shorts/dU1-_uKpHrw?si=8VDsK5aUoaoSf1FJ
these are so good. they're fluffy on the inside due to the simmering but crispy and crunchy on the outside due to the frying. a lot of the comments are raggin on this guy because they're kinda complicated but they're REALLY good (and honestly not that much work if you're used to making potatoes). i actually just fried them in a shallow pan with ~an inch of oil because i dislike deep frying and then made sure to dab off a bit of the extra grease with a paper towel, and i recreated the garlic mayo with a dollop of mayo, a little paprika and onion powder, and a half teaspoonish of garlic salt (tho i think you could probably dress them with anything and they'll be good. a lot of people don't like mayo and i get that but also I DO mayo is a TOOL that i make use of).
Tumblr media
pictured here dressed with chives and parmesan, along with the MAYO my friends made nasty comments about what the mayo looks like so kill them. eat up brother
Happy new years tumblr user tomnookishot o7!! So glad you could make it to 2024 :)
WOAH those look crazy... we still have some potatoes left in the fridge so if i end up having the spoons I will definitely be trying to make these sometime 🥺... they kinda remind me of the tornado potatoes that my local temple sells during festival season teeheehee (which I will probably be modifying the recipe to make cause those were AWESOME. and we have a lot of kebab sticks)
im so glad you messaged me first CAUSE I wanted to send you this video but i didn't feel like sending just a random link in your inbox lol
youtube
get boild NERD, happy new years :)

Hey hey!! 🎁
It's your fairy God santa here! I dont really know what to say so let's just do a little question round so I can find out a bit more about you 🩷🤍
Are there any musicians you are currently obsessed with? (Feel free to nerd out about them!!)
Are there any concerts or festivals you're looking forward to?
Any other recent obssesions? (e.g. games, movies, books, ...)
Got all presents for the holidays? (in case you celebrate)
Anyway I'm a bit tired so this might not be the best first santa impression. But once I get to know ya a bit ill make sure to spice it up!
Hop you have. a lovely day/night! 🩷🤍
(Please excuse any spelling/grammar mistakes)
- Your fairy God santa 🎅✨️
Ahhhhhh ok wait that is the sweetest message ever?🥺💕
Thank you so so much for taking your time to write me this message~♡
I hope you had a great start into December so far×
And in regards to your questions...
My biggest love when it comes to music had for the past like 17 years been Kurt Cobain. I feel like it's an unhealthy obsession, but considering I'm a smoker he isn't necessarily the unhealthiest habit of mine. In regards to grunge i also love Layne Staley! What can I say... im a sucker for blue eyes, dirty blond hair and an aura of sadness.
And besides these two I ofc need the British answer to grunge and I can't express how much this britpop revival actually means to me. For years the running joke in my friend group was that all the artists/bands I like are either broken up, dead or dying
If i had a nickel for everytime I bought tickets to a show only for the artist to die before the show; I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
Anyway! Back to fun things! I can't believe Oasis are back and just the british indie revival in general ahhh
Besides the grunge guys I've also had a huge crush on Liam Gallagher and Damon Albarn since I was a teen as well (something about sad blue eyes yadayada)...
But perfect to answer the upcoming concert question! Technically the next concerts I'm going to are from local bands~ me and my friends have a group where we occasionally organize shows. The next one will be with some local Sludge, Doom and Post Metal bands so that's coming up. Other than that... a 2 day punk festival next weekend (with the same group but not organizing). And the first/next one i look super duper forward to are The Libertines~♡ in early 2025.
And man in regards to all the shows in 2025... I'm broke but I'm so happy hhaha
And for the last points speed round!
I'm Journaling and painting a lot, dusted off my keyboard and put new strings on my guitar! (I will as always just stick to playing bass i guess), organizing/planning my best friends Bachelorette party, cuddling the cats and my bf, playing switch and falling asleep after 5 minutes, waiting to hear back for a cool job at a TV station, law exams and procrastinating law stuff (i have a law degree and am currently working on my other bar and a master in criminal sciences so lawschool and Kurt Cobain have been the biggest constant for the past 9 years lol)
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST! Baking cookies with my mom~
Ahhhh ok well now it's your turn!😤💕
Excuse the word vomit

#i feel like city english and country side english is really different #like i grew up seeing morris dances and going to local faires #the village stopped doing a its own fair in like the 80s though and only recently restarted and they stopped doing like the faire queen #stuff #although there is a picture of my grandma as it in like the 1940s #but there is still alot of folk stuff happening outside of cities is all im saying (@aphhera)
this is very true and i think probably overlaps with my half-formed musings about class and how that ties into it (in another recent post). even within cities it varies too. north london has folk (both english and irish e.g. camden has both efdss and the london irish centre), but some other parts of london have very little, for example. cambridge has folk, but oddly the majority of it in the city seems to be scottish, despite the strong english folk traditions in cambridgeshire (i am aware of the fenland morris traditions like gog magog molly etc) -- this may be a bias of the folk communities i've been part of, but i'm part of those because they were what was available/accessible to join, so... i believe newcastle has a fairly strong folk tradition, but i'm not sure on the balance of english vs other traditions (i know there's quite a big irish population there). but i think in all of these urban environments it's something that's available if you want it, but not like, universal -- it's not so much in schools, it's not a central pillar of the community, it's a tradition you have to choose to participate in and thus becomes niche
for me the only recollection i have of seeing morris dancers growing up (in suburban london) was when i played fiddle (and i think whistle?) for a children's choir at a summer festival and the act after us was a youth morris group (the Morris Minors, a joke i am just about old enough to get but probably nobody younger than me would lmao). and at the time the reaction from adults around me was very much "wow morris dancers still exist?? how weird, i thought they were long gone"
and we did country dancing at brownies, once, which others were unenthused about (little nerd me was excited about it) but never at school -- i'm always so surprised and a little jealous when people tell me they got to do it in PE. i went to one barn dance when somebody from my parents' church was celebrating a 60th birthday or something and held one in the church hall, but otherwise barn dances, ceilidhs, and equivalents did not feature. and a lot of that is being in the urban environment, and a solid chunk of it is also probably class
but of course when we're thinking about general populations, urban areas do represent a huge swathe of the population and for a tradition to be absent in those communities means it has been pushed to the margins and become a minority tradition
also the english are weird about folk culture. we are. we've relegated our folk dances and music to the zone of esoteric nerd shit that only weirdos do, and then we go looking for esoterica in the non-english parts of our heritage because we don't think we've got any of it of our own

Theres a nasally howl from the neighbour’s place. Izuku looks up – it’s the very loud, very blond guy living in the unit opposite. They’re technically in separate blocks but their balconies are close enough they can see into each other’s living rooms. He’s dancing around in his pyjamas. Yodelling at the top of his lungs off-key, swinging his Pomeranian around by the armpits like a furry ragdoll. “You’re a dog! You’re a fluffy little yellow dog and you’re a pain in the ass but you’re still my favourite shit-stain, yeah!”
Izuku bursts out laughing. The neighbour’s head whips around. He yelps when he sees him, tossing the dog on the couch and scrambling out of view to hide in the hall.
Izuku drops the watering can and runs back inside to find his phone.Small Might: Guys. I've decided i have a crush on my neighbour.

battle of the bands by roadtripwithlucifer
((smut-168158-26/26))
'The rules are simple. Battle of the Bands. Local bands send in a single track to the radio station, and ten tracks are selected. Over the coming month, the songs play on the station and listeners vote on the top five. The top 5 play a live concert as part of a music festival, then the top 3 at a larger, indoor venue. The top two have the honor of opening on the first stop of All Might’s retirement tour – here. In Izuku’s home town. And finally, the winner gets the ultimate prize. Getting to spend the rest of the tour, forty cities, across the country as All Might’s opener. Three months. Same tour bus. Shoulder to shoulder with the greatest musicians the world has ever known.'Izuku Midoriya is a broke college student presented with the opportunity of a lifetime. But winning isn't gonna be easy, especially when one band's aggressive blonde frontman seems to be dead-set on making Izuku's life a living hell.

“Don’t go through my shit, and if there’s a tie on the door, then fuck off!” Katsuki growled. “...what?” he asked. Katsuki glared at him. “This is fucking college, and I plan on getting laid a lot! I don’t need some nerd cockblocking me! And what is with all the fucking toys here!” Katsuki had moved over to his shelves. “Are you a fucking child or something?!” This was not what he was expecting.

Echoes filtered down the white hall as he descended the stairs toward the locker rooms, reverberating from the pool. A whistle, the sound of breaking water. He swiped the towel over his face, paused. The sliver of cerulean catching the sinking sun pouring through the skylights, the red and white lane buoys, the burn of chlorine.Izuku ran a hand through his curls, snagging on a knot. The clock on the wall reminded him how late it was. A minute wouldn't hurt. He worried his lip. Just a glimpse.

But, whatever, Disney Boy over there was—
Prettying up real damn good that Katsuki got kind of distracted—totally understandable, like god those CGI pine eyes—and didn’t see the straight path he made for the metal trash bin in the center of the area until he was tipping forward and waist deep in discarded bottles, plates, balled up tissues sticky with he prayed was chocolate ice cream and nacho cheese.
Mina howled behind the gate. “Look, Katsuki returned to his home.”

“I’ll make it up to you!” Izuku says brightly, lifting his head from Katsuki’s lap.
Katsuki’s eyes narrow but he isn’t still pushing Izuku away so. Progress. “Fuck are you gonna do to make it up to me?”
“Hmm…” Izuku says quietly, tapping at his chin. “Oh! You’re still a virgin, right?”
Katsuki chokes on his own spit and promptly renews his efforts of pushing Izuku away by the forehead. “Fuck off,” he wheezes, “get out of my room.”

Midoriya Izuku is just a random kid who loves art, analyzes everything, and is obsessed with the (in)famous hero Mighty Spider. He's got a loving mother, a great uncle, and maybe not too many friends that aren't those two but he's working on it.
And then a random cute boy shows up at his school, a spider bites him, he meets his hero under the worst possible conditions, and it all goes to hell. Now he's got villains on his tail, a promise to keep to a dead guy, and a washed-up hobo as his mentor.
Here goes nothing.

“Woah, someone call the fire department,” Eijirou says, elbowing Katsuki squarely in the ribs. “That guy is smokin.’”
“I literally hate you.”
Here’s the thing, though. Eijirou’s a certified dumbass, but his current observation isn’t even a little bit wrong, much to Katsuki’s displeasure.
“Think you can get his number?”

((30161-10/10))
Mina pulled up a video of a young man, seemingly teen, dancing to a popular new hit, and Izuku felt his heart drop to his stomach. His skin prickled and felt clammy as he started sweating nervously, not daring to move or make a noise. His eyes were glued to the screen but he didn’t see anything – his brain was too busy going into overdrive and freaking out.
Because Mina was showing him a video of himself. The one he uploaded last night.
How on Earth did she find this? He had barely a few thousand views, he wasn’t popular, and it’s not like he was even any good, especially compared to her or Kacchan–
“That move was sexy as hell,” Kacchan said, and that was when Izuku realized that his childhood friend – his longtime crush – also leaned in to watch the video Mina was showing him.
puppies puppies by Esselle
((15491-2/2))
"So after doing all that," Katsuki says, "you're just going to settle here? Tatting up wannabe bad boys?"
"You think all guys who have a lot of tattoos are wannabes?" Midoriya asks, so smoothly that it throws Katsuki.
"Wh—no, I mean—maybe!" Katsuki says. "You'd know best, wouldn't you? Are you a bad boy?"
The words are out of his mouth before he even realizes it, and he regrets them immediately. There's a figurative list of things that one should never do, and probably high up on it is asking dark-haired sailors with ocean green eyes and black swirls of ink all across their barely concealed muscles if they are bad boys.
--
Katsuki thinks he has everything he needs in life: a successful pet shop, an occasionally reliable assistant, and the unconditional love of the twenty puppies he’s raising for adoption. But when the tattoo parlor next door hires Midoriya Izuku, a hot sailor with an affinity for dogs, it makes Katsuki wonder if he might need something more.
Like… a piece of that ass. Maybe. He’s figuring it the hell out as he goes.
im gonna make a part 3 later ergaegrggjnjuvuh

(does a funky little dance) OFFICIAL! LEAN ON ME! TIMELINE! HERE WE GO
1986 - carly, the oldest of the ruro siblings is born and months later adopted by grace (a former broadway actress and manager of a small local cafe) and arthur ruro (a former guitarist who now owns a local music shop), a couple living in the tiny town of misky, arizona who can’t have bio kids but want a large family regardless
1987 - cameron, the second oldest of the ruro siblings, is born and months later adopted into the family
1989 - kayleigh and mary, fraternal twins, are born and adopted at two days old
general childhood information, spanning about 1990 thru 2000 - all of the girls receive musical education and are pretty much constantly surrounded by music, whether it be around the house thru their parents always having some kind of vinyl record on or helping out at their dad’s music shop
all the girls love it but kayleigh takes to it like a fish to water and starts learning violin at just age 4, and her mother begins giving her vocal training soon after
the girls discover alternative music and subculture through the magic of the fledgling internet, and carly, kayleigh, and cameron pretty much all become baby punks at like, 10-15 years old
2001 - kayleigh is invited to a music competition for Prodigious Youth at 12 years old. she is paired with Blue Scott, a shy, lanky kid from chicago who is also a massive music nerd like her. they win the competition and over the course of the week that they are working, they become best friends
over the course of the following years, they are constant pen pals, and see each other 2-3 times a year in person
2002 - when carly and cameron are teenagers, they decide to start a punk band, except in order to use all of their parents music equipment their parents FORCE them to include their younger sisters (kayleigh and mary). there is much griping and groaning about this
2003 - hey wait, that band is actually pretty good despite kayleigh and mary being only 15. they play their first show that isn’t at their local community centre without the knowledge of their parents and officially christen the band poison pop
carly graduates much to the chagrin of her parents, she gleefully declares she is not going to college
2005 - cameron, against her own better judgement, takes a gap year because the band starts recording their first album at home with their own equipment, and also starts playing more and more shows. at this point their parents know but are trusting cameron and carly to keep 16 year old kayleigh and mary in line and safe
blue introduces the girls to his friend ryka, a teenager a year younger than kayleigh and mary, who is shockingly good at guitar. she takes up kayleigh’s guitarist spot and leaves her free to do vocals only
they get lucky and happen to play a show at a large alt rock festival in phoenix, catching the attention of rising chicago-based label dissociation records who immediately offer them a record deal. they take it on the spot and dissociation flies them out to chicago a month later to sign the paperwork
2006 - they drop their first professionally recorded single, poison killed the prom queen. it shoots to the top of the charts, making poison pop one of the biggest bands in the nation overnight
they release their album of the same name that year as well, and with their continued success with the other singles, they cement themselves as the first truly household name in emo
2007 - they tour with another emo band called watch the skies, who quickly rocket in popularity, and immediately begin work on their next album. meanwhile, the girls are dealing with their first tastes of fame and they’re not dealing with it well <3
kayleigh and blue start fake dating to get the press off kayleigh’s ass about her love life. this..................is going to go exactly how you think it’s going to go. they move to LA together <3
2008 - batwings and crowbeaks drops to another massive success, and they continue touring. dissociation records, by this time, have taken almost complete control of their image and discography, so despite the record itself being quite good, it is nothing like what poison pop originally tried to make, and they’re starting to get fed up with it
not to mention dissociation has them on a near-constant work schedule, and they can’t take any significant breaks, abandoning their family and friends and almost any social lives they mightve had outside the music world
the only good thing to happen this year is mary getting married to her highschool sweetheart, mark. it is a nice wedding and probably the last time the girls will be happy together for a long time.
2009 - kayleigh and blue “break up” and stop talking to eachother completely. six months later, as they’re working on their third announced studio album bruises, the band (except kayleigh) decides to break up. upon hearing about this decision, kayleigh has a minor mental breakdown and cuts off contact with the entire band
bruises is never released, and the band is officially broken up by the end of the year, breaking out of their contract with dissociation through a legal loophole
2010 - kayleigh begins to find a life outside the band, and starts doing songwriting work with what remains of her connections in the industry, which she’s really good at and she really enjoys.
she finally fucking gets mental health help. jesus christ my gal. im so glad u are finally getting better
2011 - kayleigh makes up with pretty much everybody, including blue, but it’s a slow process. they spend their first christmas together as a family in 2 years
kayleigh and ryka discuss the fact that they still yearn for the stage, and an idea begins to form
2012 - ryka forms sparrow records, her own record label, and its first signee becomes half-dead, a two piece band consisting of kayleigh and her.
ryka moves to LA with her boyfriend rowan, and invites kayleigh to room with her. kayleigh, who knows blue is looking to move to LA and properly start his music career, invites him to room with them.
this is an idea that absolutely won’t backfire or dredge up any old feelings i’m sure
(just kidding. they’re dating by christmas <3)
2013 - half-dead releases its first album, at which point i have to admit i do not know anything abt half-dead’s release schedule fJSDKFHSDF.
what i do know is that they tour that year with long shot for speedy as their opening act and they instantly become band moms to them despite literally only being five and six years older than them at most. they just have that energy having been in the music industry for much, much longer than they have
2014 - blue releases his first album, wallflower, to shocking success!
2016 - half-dead is relatively successful, but kayleigh and ryka are not going to make the same mistakes this time round and they take a break in 2016. ryka n rowan move back to chicago, and kayleigh and blue buy their first house together!
2017 - the girls all get together on new year’s day and talk about poison pop. this discussion leads them to decide to finally bring back the band.
2018 - jetlag life, poison pop’s first album in over a decade, drops that summer, and they begin touring immediately afterwards with watch the skies!
2019 - blue proposes to kayleigh after 18 years of knowing each other and 7 years of dating. <3
2020 - blue and kayleigh FINALLY get married and nothing bad happens because this is my timeline
also poison pop, around the end of year, start dropping hints at another album....  👀

(does not go by ‘Wraith’ on tiktok)
has thrown hands defending her friends before and she’ll do it again
she has a rep to upkeep okay so nobody knows wtf she does most of the time but like on the downlow,,,, she’s a big ol’ English Literature nerd it’s her fave class

Mirage:
Elliott Witt
goes by ‘Mirage’ online
seems like the kinda dude that’d totally be into drama but like he’s actually a huge physics nerd
the Overconfident Dumbass persona covers up the fact that he’s lowkey a genius
he’s gonna go on to do some wicked engineering later in life
met Pathfinder in the robotics club
he’s like,,, weirdly good at doing magic tricks
he’s friends with everyone but he’s closest with Wraith and Pathfinder and literally nobody but them understands how this works

on literally every school sports team
nobody can figure out how the hell she has time for all of this like how does she do cadets, play on every school team, and keep up good grades
the only issue is that in the process of trying to be the best at everything she tries to make her parents proud, she’s also become distant from her family. she wants to fix this but at the moment the only way she can think of to do this is to try and work even harder
Gibraltar:
Makoa Gibraltar
everyone just calls him Gibraltar tho
head of the school’s human rights group
he’s genuinely just a really nice guy, that’s why he’s so popular
has a motorcycle. somedays you might catch sight of him and his boyfriend taking it for a spin in the late evenings
sociology is his fave subject
has a part time job as a lifeguard
grown up seeing his parents work in search and rescue, and hopes to do the same
he’s the guy the school asks to show around guests and stuff because he’s just genuinely got a great personality? and he succeeds in his work? ideal student tbh
the school turns a blind eye to his kinda rebellious streak (they’d prefer he didn’t bring a motorbike to school but that’s not gonna stop him)
Lifeline:
Ajay Che
between the way she’s always saving everyone’s asses one way or another and the fact that she’s already gained recognition for her medical inventions despite her young age, she’s earned the nickname ‘Lifeline’
co-deputy head of the school’s human rights group
Her grades are real good, she’s aiming to do a degree in medicine before channeling that into humanitarian work
she’s also got a pretty decent following on soundcloud; the girl likes music and likes making it
family is filthy rich but she makes her own cash, doesn’t like being dependent on some family fortune. feels like inheriting it is kind of a slap in the face to people who work themselves practically to death to stay afloat in this world
volunteers with various charities outside of school
of course spends a lot of time doing STEM subjects at school but she also really enjoys sociology
Bloodhound:
yeah again i don’t have a name for them someone else can think of that
called ‘Bloodhound’ online
co-deputy head of the school’s human rights group
despite going to the same school they only actually met Gibraltar at a local pride festival. the two became fast friends though
for some reason???? crows absolutely love them???????? nobody knows why but these birds follow them around all the time at school
(it’s because they feed them)
History and English Literature are their strong suits. also does well in RE lessons
sits next to Wraith in Eng Lit, the pair have sort of bonded over the way they both keep to themselves
was totally into Rick Riordan books (and still is)
does archery in their free time, and is a p damn good shot
Caustic:
Alexander Nox
Goes by ‘Caustic’ on various forums (doesn’t have any other social media)
why is he in the chemistry lab all the time
way too interested in war history
very much a loner and it okay with that - people generally see him as kinda creepy
his hair is either slicked back with gel or grease nobody can tell and honestly nobody wants to know the real answer
in all fairness though he’s got a good few scholarships under his belt for when he leaves school

So let me introduce myself. Im living in mainland Japan currently, serving a three year contract in the Marine Corps. My major is east Asia studies with a focus in culture. The requirements just say you need s bachelors degree. I know business majors who are in the program. What do u get out of it--that you can take back to the states?
I hope you don’t mind that I answered this publicly, but this is something that I want to share with everyone, largely because of myperson answer. If you would like it private, I’ll forward this entire messageto you via email or PM, and delete it. Just let me know: it’s your question andanswer, after all.
(Forgive me in advance because this is like a 9 pagereply. Feel free to ask for clarification or further details though!)
Let me introduce myself also: I’m Mercedez, a 24 yearold ALT living in Fukushima City, Fukushima, Japan. I like sewing, video games, sketching, and laughing. I listen to lots of podcasts, speak English and Japanand am learning Korean and want to relearn Mandarin and add in Russian, Hawaiianand definitely Esperanto.
And I love my job as an ALT.
I want to assure you about the degrees: I have twodegrees: my BA is in History with a focus in East Asia, and my MA is in Historyand Museum Studies. Both of these are far away from the majority of BusinessMajors I’ve met, though there’s a few of us –the Few, the Proud– Fine Arts andHumanities folks here too. I had them because I did both back to back, butyeah, all you need is a BA in any field. You could do something focused on Asia, or Japan, but you could also be aComputers major and get in. That’s not a make-it-or-break-it thing: you justneed a degree.
Coming in with that background –I typically focus inJapan from the 1980s to current, with a heavy emphasis on Women’s Culture interms of music, fashion, heritage, and feminism, though I want to expand a similarrange of 1970 to current to South Korea, but that beside the point– means thatI was coming here to emphasis the Ein JET: a cultural exchange where I learned and stopped being a teacher, andbecame student to an entire nation.
So the easy answer is that there’s a lot you can takeback. There’s a bicultural identity, there’s an openness to that comes frombeing explicitly Foreign too: you gain a lot of understanding and sympathy towhat you have, and what another culture functions as. I think that can be lifechanging and a solution to the social-cultural climate our world’s in right now:understanding.
(You also get lots of American men looking for a wifein a way that smacks of Yellow Fever fetishism. Sigh.)
The long answer is more personal, and will deal withwhat I think I’ll be taking home. Let’s go with that reply.
So I came here with a broad goal: learn about Japan.I’ve spent about 6 years –and probably almost all 52,560 hours of those years–focused on studying Japan. I cut my teeth on breaking the very prejudicedstereotypes I had of Japan in my early years of college, then went on to writeabout yukata and Japanese women’sculture and heritage in my MA. I wanted to carry on learning and breaking downwhat I had thought Japan should be orwas. I wanted to learn what the reality is currently. That seemed to bea positive way to
Now I can say that’s change, and I have three majorthings I want to take home
Number One: Community and Communal Effort
Community is a big part of Japan’s social-culturalidentity.
“The stake that stands out gets pounded down” –ugh, Iprobably messed that all up, but Ibelieve that’s close– is a phrase for a reason: standing out, being aberrant, makingtrouble or being different alter social dynamic, and can break harmony andcause issue .That can certainly be difficult to navigate, and at large, something I don’t always agree with as a way to handle social issues, but tuckbetween is a deep sense of community, a “we’re all in this together” vibe thatI –as an outside– really appreciate.
I don’t think I’m a part of a lot of communities. I’man American, sure, but I’ve never really fit in with the “Black community”, the“nerd community” can be grating, the “cosplay community” differs wildly inAmerica and Japan and can have the same issue as nerds –American, not Japan– andthough I have friends and that’s acommunity, I’m not so quick to call it that because it feels markedly differentto me. They’re my community but more, if you get what I mean.
However, the community of Fukushima City is certainlythe kind of community I’m focusing on: tight-knit, strong, and supportive.
Now, this may be because of a lot of reasons: location, proximity to others, culture, 3.11 certainly, but it goes farther back anddeeper than the disaster and really takes from both culture and manner. There’sa sense of support from folks in Tohoku, though I believe Tohoku is one of thebest, and kindest, regions in Japan. There’s a lot of smiles, lots of kindness, and helping hands: not always from obligation, but just from good folks beinggood.
America still has communities, of course, but I thinknot quite so much: the proverbial village to raise the child now criticizes themother, and the support systems that used to be in place to help in times ofneed are being decreased due to budget cuts and a desire for privatization.Because money and community have become exchangeable, a lot of groups suffer.Grassroots takes funds to start, community centers need funds for repairs, andit costs to join groups. It’s hard, especially in a time where it seems you can’ttrust your neighbour. Communities are very, very necessary, and having good, strong communities, more so.
Certainly you can find this in Japan, but you canalso find the free support of others.
I think that this is so important to me to rebuild ina similar manner because I like the friendliness of communities. I will admitthat I think millennials –my people, in fact– are onto the kind of communitiesI see here: support networks of people who see you, acknowledge you, and arethere for you. There’s a lot of love, a lot of “no problem” concern abouthelping others when you can, and that shows promise that my work and the workof thousands of others to help bring back community in a supportive, freelygiven sense is being realized.
Community is what we need in hard times, and theseare some pretty hard times. Seeing friendly faces, having people help me moveand make my way through Fukushima City, bolsters my and reminds me to pass onthat bit of kindness. Every bit I get is a sweet morsel: it makes me soft, gives me space to be kind and express kindness. It’s a really great thing thatI feel America just needs to be remindedof again: after all, there’s communities there, they just need to be given asimilar space.
Number Two: Festivals
I love festivals.
Give me a reason to eat some grilled meat andcelebrate something and I’m there, 500 yen coins in hand.
Fukushima City has no shortage either: we’re justaround the corner from the season of festivals, which in the prefecture, seemsto extend from Spring to Early Winter, starting back up in February all again.
Certainly, America has festivals, but they’re almosta folksy thing: they’re rustic, rural and barely suburban events, and if they’renot something national like a parade or a state affair, are usually overlookedoutside of communities in the immediate area.
I want festivals to be mainstream, to be enjoyable, powerful celebrations of cultural heritage and a united place. I want to seefestivals that introduce culture in a way that gives a platform, but also helpsto continue positive change. Rather, I want to see those festivals that alreadyoccur in the vein given a bigger, more national platform.
I feel like I’ve learned a lot from Fukushima Cityjust from festivals: local specialties like shamon chicken from the Chicken Festivalin Kawamata, Fukushima; a strong Argentinean presence and cultural exchangefrom Cosquin en Japon; fighting spirit from Hachiman; respect for those whocame before me and protect me from Obon matsuri. These were really valuemoments that let me have the chance to engage respectfully with a culture, andunderstand a region.
I want there to be more of a festival and culturalcelebration in America, more than there already is. I want to see peoplevividly showcasing “This is me!” to everyone, because I think that willcontinue to bring understanding. I think that without understanding, America isonly going to continue to decline as it is right now.
But all Americans understand festivals, drinks, andfood: I think having a festival culture will allow education under the guise ofgrilled meats, good alcohol, and music.
Fun is a very powerful cure for ignorance: Icertainly found myself learning with every event. I had never considered thatJapanese persons might speak Spanish and perform in Cosquin en Japon’s musicalshowcase. I’d never considered Obon being a celebration and not a solemn event. Those changes of my mind changed me and helped me to understand different partsof Japan. Certainly the country is mostly Japanese people, but they’re notquite as homogenous as we encourage in America. There’s a lot of diversity ofthought and cultural sharing.
That’s super what counts.
Number Three: Food Culture and Sharing
Oh man, I love food. Like, I love food. I’m thinkingabout my lunch bento –I ordered it so I can eat with the librarian and mysupervisor today because they’re my girls and I love them both– and it’s onlylike… 9.
Food is good: it’s necessary, but cleansing, comesfrom hard work or deep friers, feels good, heals good, and makes you want tostrive for good. It’s just good.
So I feel this is best explained through a long, windinganecdote. Here goes.
When I first came, my American manners really stoodout: I wouldn’t eat until everyone got their food, I declined
But I wanted to, desperately: I wanted to sampleevery time someone offered, but it just felt bad. I was paying for only my meal, and these people –not friends, but simple co-workers and more mildly, acquaintances– weren’t. It would havebeen wrong to take a fair portion and still pay my 1000 yen for my meal only. It’s hard to describe why: I think it’s just how I grew up. Strange, because weshare food in mass, but there’s something about the “Mine” culture of Americathat makes it incredibly hard to do otherwise.
It took me months to break this habit of course: I’donly share at events where the food was meant to be shared family style, but Ithink around  December, I finally gave inand said, “Yeah, I wanna taste that!” when someone offered me from their plate.I shared back and realized, yeah, this is okay. I won’t say that I’m a sharingfood now, but I will say that when I last went for Mexican, I share everything fromenchiladas to fajitas, a plate of nachos, some sides: save for my drink, we allshared everything, and just went at the bill in thirds.
I want more food sharing in America like this, notjust with family or at events or family style resturants. I want to be able toshare from each other’s plates and not feel a really strong sense of “Mine!”all the time. Certainly, there’s times where I want that one dish to be mine, but I like that there’s a comfort in sharing food with each other, in tryinglots of different things. It’s friendly and cozy, and definitely something Iwant to invite more Americans to do.
Plus, who doesn’t love eating lots of differentthings?
Number Four: The Art of Getting Lost
I chose to end this lengthy read on this because Ithink that in America, there’s a lack of getting lost for the sake of gettinglost.
We’re a busy culture: even as someone who loved logndrives, it became incredibly hard for me to indulge in grad school. Gas was acost, time was needed elsewhere, and so I cut back on journeying down littlelanes or dirt roads and went directly where I needed to and back to myapartment.
As I sit here, thinking of a train ride to somewhere,I think about the fact that Japanese culture allows for a lot of aimlessexploration via trains and buses. Being a small country, trains and buses arevery efficient, running often enough that unless it’s super late, you canalways get back to a main station or area.
I think there’s a kind of quiet beauty in that: yougo on an adventure to get away, and find your center again and feel mentallyclean. I find that here, I’m encouraged and given space to do that again:explore, get lost in a small town or big city, and come back to what needsdoing refreshed.
I think that there’s a lot of trips in America, butthere’s always stress with them. Mind, I know and recognize that Japanesepeople also stress: not all their trips are Studio Ghibli stereotypes. Sometimestrips are just stressful, even amidst having fun.
But I do think that Japanese culture’s harmony, whena positive attribute and not a way to keep peace over dealing with conflict, can be a really powerful blessing.
I won’t lie and say that I haven’t had a stressfultrip here: my Tokyo trip included the stress of over half a million people atComiket’s venue, which would honestly stress anyone. I will say that I do feellike I can remove myself pretty well and just enjoy, and that’s superimportant. Certainly it’s not perfect here, but I do feel that my more remotetrips force my mind only to the trip, and that’s a great reward.
Perhaps in America, in the rush of things, we steppedaway from that. I think a step back into separating and compartmentalizing ourlives for Fun and Work would be nice. Enjoyment is just as good as Hard Work, after all. I do see a lot of phones checking emails on trips, common in bothAmerican and Japan, but I think trips are just culturally different here, and Iwant them to return back to that same division in the states.
(I want to interject that a lot of this is alsocoming from the privilege of not being Japanese or perceived as ethnicallyAsian. I’m given a lot of leeway because I’m distinctly Foreign Coded, so myexperiences of being able to do unique things and adventure are because I’m notbound to Japanese culture or socio-cultural standards. I can leave work earlyand go to a bathhouse. I can take days off to go on trips to nowhere. My co-workersmay want to do that, but are a lot more bound. I think that’s always important toremember that my privilege as a Cool Foreign comes with the knowledge not tomisuse that and instead, help bridge a friendship between two nations.)
Everything I’m taking back is very cultural: it’sreminding America of how to be kind, of how to enjoy the diversity we have inour nation, of how to respect and celebrate Us. Certainly, I hope to take backways to change the mindset of Japanese persons, ways to celebrate women’sculture and advance the clock on how we perceive Japanese feminism in comparisonto Western displays of feminism. That work’s super important.
But I think remembering who we are –a nation of kindhearts, hard workers, folks who like good food and music, and a nation of opportunityfor all to find their happiness in a powerful, gentle way– is just as importanttoo.
tl;dr: This turned into an essay completely by accident, but I thinkit’s important to answer your question. These are my reasons, my things, that Iwant to take and share in America. I hope this all made sense, and hey, feelfree to stuff that inbox with even more questions.
