LIV HELP I CAN’T STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS. Like just the concept of aiming to make a character as relatable as possible and what’s going wrong with that with x readers.

Because ok, here’s the thing that people don’t get when they’re aiming to make a character as PROJECTABLE and RELATABLE as possible: Relatability ISN’T ABOUT HAVING A BLANK CANVAS!! It’s about the opposite of that!! It’s about having something in that character that you identify with, that you’ve experienced, usually emotionally.

And I feel like the biggest thing that proves my point about this is kinning. People kin all KINDS of characters and things. But if relatability was about this sort of blank-canvas no-character-at-all writing, people would mostly be kinning very bland characters without any traits or motivations, because that’s how they would project the easiest - but that’s not what happens!!

Instead, people kin characters with VERY strong identities, because they can look at the stories and themes of those characters and relate their own experiences to those stories and themes. It’s not about having empty space to put yourself into - it’s about having something to grab onto and say “that’s mine!”.

Another piece of proof: People constantly projecting their trauma and experiences onto the characters they love. Again, if identifying with a character was about blank space, people wouldn’t be doing this for every character under the sun, up to and including the ones with very clear personality and motivations. But they do; they see tiny bits of a character they relate to, that they see themselves in, grab it and run with it.

...This is all to say, I’m most definitely going to have to try doing this in an X Reader because this idea is now too interesting not too

Anyway I just wanted to join in on the x reader discussion as someone who does a lot of thinking about narrative analysis; I think the main problem is, no matter what you do, how you write, the reader's character is still always going to have some character trait. Writers try to get around this by having the reader be pushed around by other characters/the plot, but then you get the problem that another person described - everyone is spineless and never initiates! And it's so hard to write a character that even MOST people can relate to.

I do wholeheartedly agree that the problems with representing more people who aren't small & feminine can absolutely be fixed easily, by people just... not doing that, for once lol.

But I wonder if the solution to the character problem is not making the fic as relatable as possible, because that's not going to happen. I see visual novels that often strongly characterize the player character even if they let you customize them with your name/appearance - I wonder if doing something like that would lead to a far more enjoyable experience than people trying to make their characters too relatable and thus, really bland.

It's something to think about. :D I might try something like this!

and i am so glad that you've chimed in on this... i think you're ONTO something!!!!!

i never really thought about it in that way, the reader being pushed around by the rest of the story as a way of attempting to keep it relatable, but it makes sense! and that works for some people, because that's just how their actual personality type is, but for a lot of people, they're much more involved and would thus be much more involved in the story and with the characters.

so! heavily characterizing the reader could really lead to more people being able to identify with it, because the more aspects of this reader that are shown, the more likely it is that the person actually reading it will be able to identify with a decent amount of them. they'd almost be relatable because the writer wasn't trying too hard to be relatable. and even if it doesn't apply to everyone reading it, because that's just not possible, i'm sure it would be nice for the people who do not feel represented in most reader inserts to see more options !!!!!

Hi! Yes! I’m alive! I didn’t spontaneously combust (yet)! I was originally dakotaburning.

I think I originally said I was just going to be gone until the end of the year last year, but obviously I did not come back. I decided that tumblr was stressing me out more than helping me, and it became more of an anxious reflex to open it than anything I actually wanted to do.

I won’t make any promises about being back for good. I wanted to do a bit of a test run to see if I could use Tumblr without it becoming a huge force of negativity in my life again. I’ll probably mainly be on my selfship blog, @falleninlove!

Also, if we were mutuals, but now we’re not, it’s nothing against you personally - I unfollowed pretty much everyone except a couple fun blogs and my very closest friends.
