I JUST WATCHED MULAN AND I NEED FEW WORDS WITH DISNEY
!!!!!!May contain some spoiler!!!!!!!!!
Srsly, where should I start?!
They reduce mushu, Im okay with that, knowing that they want some serious tone in the live action version. I understand that mushu is probably too comical for a serious atmosphere.
They change cricket into a person. I can take that, though actually I expect to meet a character that represent mushu.
They make Mulan to have a sister who's afraid of spider, to fill the "match maker accident" scene. Im okay.
They reduce General Shang. Okay.
They add new love interest. Yeah fine.
Jet Li and DONNIE YEN YALL... That's cool.
BUT
How could you:
REDUCE MY BELOVED MULAN TO A MARY SUE?! Yes you heard it right: MARY SUE. All the great fighting skill, all the great power, it's because she has a great chi?! Don't get me wrong, I'm okay with chi thing, but could you not USE IT LIKE THAT?! Like "yea she's great because she's one with chi, nah not because the training... The chi." OR DOES THAT SOUND FAMILIAR?! super force lightning because Rey is a STROOOOONG force wielder somehow. AND thats not all!!! This Mulan seem to come to scene, all prepared and everything is so easy for her, even when it comes to her identity crisis. Just one ted talk and then BOOM yea imma come out as girl and tell everybody that. Where is the struggle?! It all doesn't look real! The Mulan I grew up with struggled as all of us did, the MULAN that fights for her place, not the MULAN that somehow is a great chi wielder, accompanied by a phoenix who apparently does nothing but show up randomly and act as a glorious accessories. WHERE IS THE MULAN THAT REPRESENT OUR STRUGGLE IN THE WORLD OF MAN AS JUST AN ORDINARY INDIVIDUAL?! Where is THE MULAN that fails like everybody else, but try again and again UNLIKE everybody else?
The witch... Naaaaaahhhh.... Her character is so poorly executed tbh. Im gonna repeat myself: JUST ONE TED TALK AND BOOM SHE SIDED WITH MULAN. No emotional changing showed, or anything. I dont even know that she already changed side. And the character feels so forced to be there, to be the mirror of Mulan.
The final battle is... *Sighs* so CRINGE. Seriously, I sigh so hard when that phoenix came out behind her, and act as her wings. AND WHY IS SHE SO OP AGAIN
The pacing OH MY GOOOOODDDD. It makes me dizzy! They don't give us time to laugh, to feel the sadness, to feel the emotion, even to cheer up. Suddenly BOOM fight scene. Two seconds later, BOOM identity crisis. AND EVEN BEFORE I CAN CONNECT WITH THAT BOOM HERE COMES THE DRAMATIC HEROIC SCENE THAT SOMEHOW IS THE SOLUTION OF THE PROBLEM.
Where is the blood in the battlefield? Oh wait, Disney doesn't have that blood prop.
So overall,
I, an Indochinese, unfortunately have to say that this MULAN is disappointing.
Thank you to listen to my ted talk
