The Journey began on a rainy Monday morning, after lugging all our bags up to sixth form to say our dramatic farewells before we headed off on our three-day trip. With the storm brewing off the coast we set of rather swiftly in our mini bus which was crammed with pupils and bags stacked up like building blocks. The trip to the ferry took longer than expected due to certain bathroom breaks and by the time we got to boarding the ferry everyone was drained of all energy but there was still a glimmer of excitement as we waited to board… sadly we missed the ferry we were supposed to take because of some complications with the booking. So, flash forward a couple of hours after a café stop in the nearby ASDA we were finally on the ferry. Although the ferry was freezing and the waves were oddly calm despite the storm, the wind however was a different story, but beside that the view was breath-taking.
After many photos and snacking we arrived on the Isle of Arran, and back on the mini bus it was. A short drive later we arrived at the research centre to a warm welcome. We all got settled into our rooms to get ready for the next few days…
Rising early to a made breakfast we prepared to go out on the beach for the day. The weather was cold but suitable to still work in. We split into our groups after a demonstration from our guide Beth and began to work. Collecting data turned out to be more fun than expected, it was made all the better by the arrival of a seal bobbing in the rough sea glancing at us while we worked.
After braving the chilling wind the longshore drift data was all wrote down and it was time for lunch! This however could not happen until we ventured up a fell to eat with a scenic view. This was made more amusing when Josh’s waggon wheel served its round design well by rolling down the side of the fell.
After a small walk back down at the beach for some more data it was time to head back to the field centre to write up what we had found and draw the graphs from our data. Everyone was soon eager to get warm and have dinner. We all got time to relax in the common room playing pool, darts and table tennis while music came through a speaker, it was a perfect end to the day.
The last day collecting data on the carbon cycle was made memorable by the sight of a Stag grazing on the fell we were working on. Once the data was collected it was finally time to pack up our things for the journey back home, we said are goodbyes to the helpful staff at the centre and set off. Since we had a lot of time to spare until our ferry departed we stopped for drinks and snacks.
The ferry home was pleasant and the mini bus was more lively the closer we got to home. Eventually, after a good few days we arrived safe back at school grateful to be sleeping in our own beds that night.
How have you all been? Tell me in the comments,
and remember…. Just live the adventure!
