I'm just jotting down a few themes I've noticed so far in the Running Grave!
Food/hunger/weight: while Robin's undergoing forced starvation in the cult (again, a common form of mind control used by cults) Strike is on a diet. A lot of references are made to characters being under- or overweight. For instance the detail that one of the ex-cult members developed a binge eating problem following her traumatic experience with the cult. Food (and Strike's and Robin's respective relationships to it) has been a pretty consistent motif that has popped up throughout the series so far and it's being made very explicit in TRG. There's definitely an idea of unhealthy relationships with food being explored. (Though also jkr just likes to write about food lol that's pretty clear in hp as well)
Disconnection from family: While Strike is actually connecting with his family more than we've seen before– forging a new bond with Lucy and her family, taking care of Ted, getting to know Prudence– the cult's MO (as is the case with most cults) is the opposite, to alienate victims from their families. We're getting to know several families who have been torn apart by UHC. The central family to the mystery is of course Mazu, Wace, and Daiyu. There's specifically a focus on mothers: there are several mothers or expecting mothers in the cult, Leda, Mazu, Ilsa (the book starts at her son's christening with her as a new mother). Even Bijou's apparent baby-trapping schemes fit into this theme, though I'm not sure how thats going to play out yet.
Mental illness/trauma: Prudence is a psychologist, and several of the cult victims either suffered from mental illness before being recruited or as a result of the trauma they experienced. Lucy discloses the fact that she's in therapy to Strike, a fact which surprises him, and encourages him to pursue therapy as well. Robin and Strike are both characters who have a great deal of unprocessed trauma, which they've slooowly been coming to grips with throughout the series, but I think so far this is the book where it's been most directly addressed. As of yet mostly in Strike's case, though given the nature of what's happening at in the cult I imagine I'm going to start seeing some of Robin's too.
Empathy/forgiveness: I'm not sure how to word this one but there's a feeling that Strike is becoming more open to understanding others and feeling more empathy towards them. He's a character who has previously been somewhat harsh and judgmental towards the people he deals with both in his personal life and his work– I'm not complaining, it's a good bit of characterisation. But after having criticised/scorned Lucy's lifestyle for the entire series so far, he's finally beginning to understand why she is the way she is and respect her. His realisation that she's actually incredibly brave was a HUGE moment. In general, Strike's inner monologue has been much less critical of the people he interviews than it typically is. The cult has a very black and white mentality, people are either good or evil, and I think this is something Strike has tended towards in the past- so TRG seems to be putting forward the notion that people deserve understanding and kindness. That nuance is important. A big issue when dealing with victims of cults is that many of them have been coerced into doing terrible unconscionable things that are difficult for the rest of us to understand, and many of them struggle with guilt, while outsiders struggle to forgive their actions. Steve Hassan explains this very well in his book (which is referenced in TRG and read by Strike)
I may expand on this!! These are just a few thoughts I've had so far

Human, All Too Human
In praise of Ingrid Bergman. By Sarah Kerr "The Billy Rose Tribute to Ingrid Bergman" Museum of Modern Art, New York City Dec. 22, 1997-Jan. 11, 1998 Ingrid Bergman had the greatest downcast eyes in history. That's what I concluded, anyway, when I first fell under the spell of old Hollywood movies and started making up trivia questions about actors and actresses as if they were the Brooklyn Dodgers. I'm not the only one who feels this way, either. Mention Bergman to a female cinephile and she'll let out a sad, admiring sigh. Barbara Stanwyck and Bette Davis had more zing, Carole Lombard and Katharine Hepburn were wittier, Joan Crawford had a certain compelling insanity, but Ingrid Bergman felt. She got her greatest effects in Casablanca and Gaslight and Spellbound and Notorious by swooping her eyes down to the floor and darting them back and forth, as if watching a mouse scurry across the room. She was the classic example of an intelligent, dignified woman turned by love into a big fluttering nerve.
Tumblr media
O n the basis of triumphs like A Woman's Face, David O. Selznick brought her over in 1939. When she refused to pluck her eyebrows and had trouble slimming down (with a rather charming lack of vanity, she binged on ice cream and cookies to calm anxiety), Selznick introduced his new Swedish export as a wholesome Greta Garbo--what Garbo might had been like if she'd grown up on a jolly farm. There followed striking performances in a string of heavy-handed movies (Intermezzo, 1939; For Whom the Bell Tolls, 1943; Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, 1941) and then Casablanca (1942), which went so badly during the filming that everyone involved was sure it would be the bomb of the year. During the entire shoot, no one ever told Bergman whether her character, Ilsa, was supposed to be in love with her brave, freedom-fighting French husband (Paul Henreid) or with Rick (Humphrey Bogart), the American she used to love, who had turned into a bitter cynic. Bergman was naturally frustrated and confused--she considered leaving the picture--but her uncertainty translated on-screen into a gorgeously accurate portrait of the way lovers swing back and forth between longing and the fear of too much pain.
The story behind Casablanca is so often told that it wouldn't be worth retelling if frustration and uncertainty did not become the hallmarks of Bergman's high-Hollywood style. Sadly, perhaps, she was at her best playing a woman in love with a man who won't let her know where she stands. In Gaslight (1944), she was a loyal wife to suave Charles Boyer, who slowly poisoned her and led her to believe she was going mad. In two collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, she helped nudge the filmmaker toward his darker, late style, which pivots around a self-possessed heroine whose resistance to love needs to be broken down--often brutally. Like a piece of fancy candy, Bergman had a tough and shiny outside and an inside of bubbling goo. In Spellbound (1945), she was an overly intellectual psychiatrist who loses her cool when she falls for a colleague (Gregory Peck) who may be an insane killer. But her greatest role was in Notorious (1946), as Alicia Huberman, a self-loathing, hard-drinking daughter of a German spy who gets coerced into espionage herself by a U.S. agent (Cary Grant). He's too proud to admit that he loves her, so he encourages her to prostitute herself and risk her life by marrying the head of a Nazi conspiracy. The ending, in which he realizes she's in danger, breaks into the Nazi's mansion, and finds her rotting with poison (but beautiful as ever in the haunting chiaroscuro), may be the most romantic scene ever committed to film. It's typical Hitchcock and typical Bergman: The heroine must be tortured before she can get her reward.

Were the movies she made with Rossellini worth this nightmare? Sort of. Rossellini didn't believe in such hidebound concepts as "plot" or "dialogue" or "acting." For their first film together, Stromboli (1950), he asked Bergman to play a sophisticated war refugee who marries a poor Italian fisherman and feels trapped by his backwardness. He sent the actress to a tiny, parched island; surrounded her with amateurs; and told her to make the whole thing up. The result was simultaneously poetic and dull, natural and pretentious. The sound quality was terrible, the dialogue flat and awkward. But Stromboli was a little like an early personal computer: It was clumsy and painfully slow, but in its scriptless wanderings, it hinted at a powerful new freedom. A generation later it was cited as an inspiration by pioneers of the French New Wave.
Bergman made four more films with Rossellini; the two I have seen are intriguing and dull. Then they split, and she survived by performing on the European stage until the United States finally allowed her back in in 1956. She made a number of Hollywood films, a few of which MOMA showed, most of which are charming but disappointingly lightweight. Because she was so unfairly punished for the Rossellini affair, there's a temptation to elevate the reputation of her less celebrated films, to point out the bounty of interesting work that Americans have missed out on or ignored in favor of chestnuts like Casablanca. But I think she did her best and most unique work in 1940s Hollywood. When Bergman arrived, leading actresses were superwomen, admirable but hyperstylized, like Garbo or Hepburn. After 1949, the year she left, they tended to split into two equally fantastical categories: big-breasted bimbos (Lana Turner, Marilyn Monroe) and anorexic princesses (Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn). In the middle was the supremely human Ingrid Bergman, sane but soulful, vulnerable but always able to attract and hold the love of men and audiences, for the simple reason that she deserved it.
Photographs of: Bogart and Bergman in Casablanca from Corbis-Bettmann; Bergman and Grant in Notorious, Bergman and Rossellini from UPI/Corbis-Bettmann.

↳ January Wrap-Up ˚୨୧⋆。
Better late than never, right?
Here’s my wrap-up for January! It was a good reading month for me, and a great start to the year, reading wise :)
~ I Dare You by Ilsa madden-mills
~ Taken By A Sinner by Michelle Heard
~ How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories by Holly Black
~ Owned By A Sinner by Michelle Heard
~ The Marriage Game by Sara Desai
~ Heartstopper: Vol #1 by Alice Oseman
~ Heartstopper: Vol #2
~ Heartstopper: Vol #3

~ The Heartstopper Yearbook
~ The Bride Test by Helen Hoang
~ Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur
~ The Sun Will Rise and So Will We by Jenna Cecelia
~ Uncaged Wallflower by Jennae Cecelia
~ Riot House by Callie Hart
I enjoyed all of my January reads but the notable mentions would have to be - in no particular order:
The Heartstopper Series, I absolutely devoured and loved these graphic novels, I enjoyed them that much I just had to go and binge watch the Heartstopper Netflix series right after it!!
How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories, was a beautiful dive into Cardan’s childhood. It definitely gave some insight as to why he behaved the way he did. After reading The Folk of the Air Series back in 2022, I loved being able to go back to Elfhame even if it was for a short while. Jude x Cardan will forever hold a place in my heart <3
And finally, Milk and Honey. Wow just wow! This was my first poetry book, can you believe that?! I loved every single passage, it was raw, beautiful and I found myself being able to relate to quite a few poems.

So, I’ve been away for a while and I’ve realised a few things...
1. I haven’t posted on here properly/ regularly for months - I’d been having a hard time work wise, I had to pack up all my stuff and move house and mentally I was just exhausted and feeling pretty low.
However, I’m doing reasonably well now I think; I’ve successfully moved across the country, I’m finally getting some teaching supply work with an outlook for getting a permanent post soon, and I’m getting used to being 200 miles away from my network of friends.
2. I haven’t written/ posted anything fic wise for close to a year and... I’m kind of happy? When I discovered that the other day I thought it would stress me out but it hasn’t. I mean, I need to catch up on years worth of prompts and the like (I’m sorry if you’ve ever sent me a prompt and I’ve never filled it...) but I think I really needed the break. I was reaching a point where I was getting worried about my writing and not posting and so I didn’t work on anything and then I stressed about not posting and so on and so forth. But taking a break for this long has helped me put things in perspective; yes I want to write, but I’m going to try and not pressure myself, or worry that I’ve not posted anything. I’m gonna work on things I think, but at my own pace and for my own happiness to start with. I was reading through some old stories of mine and I could see how well (relatively) I have written in the past - I think I lost that ability somewhere along the way and I want to find and work at that standard again (and maybe improve too...)
3. I miss chatting to people in fandom. I’ve been away for so long that I guess I’ve fallen off people’s radar, but if anyone wants to say hi, or catch up, or just fangirl about anything then feel free to send me a message - I’m going to try and do better to stay in touch.
TLDR - I’ve been away for a while, but I’m feeling happier and a little healthier and hopefully it’s onwards and upwards for me with things 🤞

Penguins Behind Bars | July 20, 2003 - 11:00PM | Special
Well, fuck me, I'm covering Penguins Behind Bars, aren't I?
In the past I didn't consider this to be a true Adult Swim original, and I forget why exactly I came to that conclusion. It may have been because for a time this was impossible to find. Now it's just up there on Adult Swim's website and app, ready to be watch by all those who are morbidly curious enough to check it out. It's a National Film Board of Canada co-production, which might be another reason I considered this to belong to a different canon. But a little more research reveals that this short is owned by Cartoon Network and it's current presence on the Adult Swim app seems to support this. So I guess this is, indeed, an Adult Swim original. I coulda sworn this played at animation festivals and was merely acquired by Adult Swim for a one-time showing, but I guess this was a bonafide attempt at piloting a series and this is still currently their property.
Penguins Behind Bars is a fairly straight-forward women-in-prison story with penguins instead of human women, making it so you can't beat off to it. The humor is pretty light and the tone is cute. It's fairly adult, but it's nothing that you couldn't get away with airing on normal Cartoon Network in prime-time. It's not exactly Ilsa The Wicked Warden. It just feels like a Canadian cartoon. In fact, I'd say the defining characteristic of Penguins Behind Bars is Canadian.
The director, Janet Perlman, based this on her graphic novel of the same name, originally published in 1989. She directed another penguin short in 1981, called The Tender Tale of Cindrella Penguin. It's shorter, more kid-friendly, and dialogue-free, and is basically just a retelling of Cindrella but with penguins. It is also cute. As I understand she has a pretty respectable career in animation and children's books. Good for her!
The main problem with this pilot is that it's boring. It's mostly just penguin-related puns and visual gags. The plot is played fairly straight. I struggle to imagine a genuine audience for this. Not juvenile enough to satisfy kids, teens or (let's face it) your typical Adult Swim viewer, not sophisticated enough to amuse high-minded adults. It's a strange mixture of concepts all around. I've never in my life encountered anyone seeking this out except out of some kind of completist duty on the part of Adult Swim or adult animation fanatics.
Speaking of seeking, for years this was considered "lost media" as a broadcast recording of this short was not known to have survived (I probably had one somewhere, not to brag). Eventually one turned up in 2017 and a copy was uploaded to the internet. Cartoon Network apparently took notice, had the upload pulled, and put up their own copy themselves on Adult Swim's website. I have a distaste for when TV networks protectively pull fan-supplied copies of rare TV shows or even commercials they have no intention of making available themselves, so this is about as happy an ending for Penguins Behind Bars as it deserves.
MAIL BAG
I have this vague memory of seeing something on adult swim of a woman holding her arms out (Katherine Hahn maybe?) and to a hip hop beat going: ♫I'm a lesbian/ I do what *I* want♫ Do you remember what this was. It's vague memory is ruining my spiritual life.
Oh WOW. This sounds like something that would air on Spike TV, frankly. It sounds like you’re talking about a live-action thing, but could it have been Gary the Rat? They had an exquisite animation style that could easily be misremembered as live-action. The phrase “uncanny valley” gets tossed around a lot in animation circles, but,
If Adult Swim teamed up with your favorite fast food burger joint to make an "adult" style happy meal what kind of Toys would you like to see.
I would very much appreciate a line of Happy Meal toys that are Looney Tunes but Censored 11 themed. I know this doesn’t answer your question. To answer your question actually I would also very much appreciate a line of Assy McGee toys
im assuming all the mean/trolling e-mail you get are from your friends. do you ever wonder if they are really your friends since they have nothing better to do than anonymously harass your blog?
No I wonder about better stuff like what if they remade the spice girls but they are all naked
Any thoughts on Mike Richards becoming the new Jeopardy host? And no it's not Kramer so I'm gonna cut you off on the pass there.
I don’t know who that is, I don’t know who Kramer is, I don’t know who YOU are. This is a three strikes your out kind of sitch here. YOUR OWT
Tuca and Bertie is coming back for a 3rd season on [AS], what is your immediate reaction. If it's "I haven't seen the show" then make something up. Lie. I don't care.
I love bird movies and I eagerly await watching these ones! I love to freak to the beak. Episode 1 binge watch coming up :D

last thing I googled: Witherward sequel, I just finished the first book and loved it! Sorry to everyone who I try to persuade to read it so I have people to talk about it with. It’s about an alternate version of London that’s split into six areas, each belonging to a different magical faction. Ilsa is a changeling who grew up in the otherworld (aka our world) and gets brought back to the Witherward to try help find the missing Changeling Alpha, and deal with a secret society of people who think the Changelings are lesser beings and are trying to take their territory (Camden, but that includes more than our world’s Camden) off them and generally kill them. So yes plenty of action, mystery and twists.
other blogs: nope
why I chose my url: Skywalker is a reference to the skywalkers obviously because that’s largely what I post about, radiant is a reference to the Knights Radiant from The Stormlight Archive, because I absolutely love those books and I love the Knights Radiant, and they’re kind of the equivalent of the jedi so I thought it worked.

currently wearing: black cord trousers, pink ribbed long sleeve top.
dream job: oh man I have no idea, I have like no skills and haven’t a clue what to do with my life. I guess being a director would be interesting? That or just like working in a bookshop.

top 3 fictional worlds to live in: Doctor Who, Star Wars, Cosmere
