WHAT DO ALL OF THESE BOOKS HAVE IN COMMON?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ANSWER UNDER THE CUT
All of them have been banned, or access to them has been restricted, in a prison in America within the last ten years.
In many states, prisons have broad and vague guidelines for book restrictions -- N.J. Admin. Code § 10A:18-4.9 grants prisons the right to ban a book if it "Lacks, as a whole, serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value". In Arizona, "inmates are not permitted to send, receive, or present... Publications that depict nudity," and explicitly states that classical art is not an exception (DO 914: 8.2.1 and 8.2.1.1).
I volunteer at a nonprofit that sends free books to prisoners. From personal experience, I know there are sweeping book restrictions such as "no dictionaries," "no coloring books," or "no manga". While these books are not always strictly banned, inmates are frequently underpaid, or forced to labor without pay. That means many inmates cannot afford to purchase books, and rely on nonprofits for access.
Book bans in public libraries and schools are unconscionable, but they are usually not effective at restricting access. A high school student can usually still see an image of Michelangelo's David even if they cannot learn about it in class. In prison, a book ban on nudity can permanently prevent inmates from accessing great works of art, the shared heritage of humankind.
DONATE TO THE INSIDE BOOKS PROGRAM IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY. THEY SEND FREE BOOKS TO PEOPLE IN PRISONS.

I felt well enough today to make some alien-related tattoos ☺️
They are Early Access because I haven't been able to make much for my subscribers regarding this month's theme due to my illness. They will become available to the public on July 7, 2024 🥰
SIMS 4 - ALIENS - CROP CIRCLE UPPER BACK TATTOOS AM/AF - BASE GAME
Even though these tattoos are base game compatible, they can still be used on other occult sims.
These are crop circles from around the globe.
"What are crop circles?
Crop circles are large-scale patterns made by flattening crops such as wheat, barley or canola. Crop circle artists still use boards of wood to stomp out patterns, as a National Geographic documentary filmed in 2004 illustrated. The artists hide their tracks in existing tractor-tire ruts, making it seem as if the design dropped out of the sky.
Crop circles can be simple circles or more complex patterns. Southern England remains a hotspot for crop circle artists, with masterpieces incorporating triangles, spinner shapes and crescents. They've also popped up elsewhere around the world, with one article in the Illinois newspaper Courier & Press calling them a "plague" in the state in the 1990s. ("We think it's probably just kids," Rock Island County Sheriff Tod VanWolvelaere told the paper decades later.)
Sometimes, "crop circles" appear for apparently natural reasons. The crop circles that Chorley and Bower took their inspiration from were found in Australia in 1966, though they weren't actually crops; they were patches of flattened, floating reeds in a lagoon in far north Queensland. The farmer who found them claimed to have seen a flying saucer whizzing away, but locals said such circles were common during the wet season. According to the Cairns Post, the most likely explanations were downdrafts of wind or small vortices known as willy-willies (similar to dust devils). get to know me game (I was tagged by @rimouskis and @sportsthoughts ... thank you both!)
do you make your bed?
Yep! In part because I like having a nicely made bed, in part because I use my bed as my design board/work space when I'm quilting. And, in part, because it's an easy way to have some small bit of tidy space in a house that has too much stuff. (My core being is "neat freak" but my reality is "please pull a truck up so I can toss stuff out the window".)
what's your job?
I am a newspaper copy editor/writer.
if you could go back to school, would you?
It depends. Would I need to keep working? Would it put me in debt? I like learning, but I already don't have enough time in my day to do everything I want to do. If I had to write term papers and study for tests while working a full-time job and still taking care of my household (groceries, laundry, meals, yardwork, running errands, all the other odds and ends involved), I think I might crack.
can you parallel park?
Yes, though I rarely have the need. (If you follow the instructions carefully, it's amazing how well it works.)
do you think aliens are real?
IDK. I accept the reasoning that it's unlikely we're alone in the vastness of the universe, and that it's a bit arrogant to think we're the only ones. But I also think it's unrealistic to assume others take a form we'd immediately recognize. And, if there is intelligent life out there, why, exactly, would it mess with us?! Have you seen us lately?!
can you drive a manual car?
Yes. My brother loaned me his pickup truck to drive after I graduated from college. (He didn't need it at the time because of his job.) The idea of not having to make a car payment was great incentive to learn.
guilty pleasure?
I'm not sure I feel guilty about any of my pleasures. But they include Tumblr/fandom, writing fic, Pens hockey, quilting and a daily mug of good-quality hot chocolate.
tattoos?
I have a permanent spot on my skin from when I accidentally stabbed myself with a pencil as a kid. I'm pretty sure that's as close as I'm going to get. (Mine is big enough and dark enough that doctors routinely panic when they see it, thinking it's skin cancer, until I remind them we've had that conversation before.)
favorite color?
black with all the bright colors, particularly the off colors (fuchsia, turquoise, teal); and all the blues that make up the ocean (There's a reason why batik is my favorite type of fabric. Solid colors aren't nearly as interesting as lots of colors playing together.)
favorite type of music?
The most straight-forward answer is rock, particularly classic rock, though I like a lot of different types of music on a song-by-song (or artist) basis. Most country music doesn't do much for me. My last two musical purchases were Disturbed's cover of "The Sound of Silence" and Sufjan Stevens' "Illinois" album, which is the basis of "Illinoise" the Broadway musical.
do you like puzzles?
I guess you could say that, since I quilt and "Tetris" is my favorite video game.
any phobias?
I'm not into snakes. I'm trying to do better about not panicking over them, but I still have absolutely no desire to see them, whether in my yard or in a photograph.
favorite childhood sport?
Riding my bike.
do you talk to yourself?
Of course. (At least, that way, I know someone is listening to me!)
tea or coffee?
Nope. I prefer drinking clean water to dirty water. (The idea of having a cup of tea is appealing, but the reality has never done anything for me.)
first thing you wanted to be be when growing up?
A photographer.
what movies do you adore?
"Dave" and "The American President" are both older movies but they have lead characters (Kevin Kline and Martin Sheen Michael Douglas, respectively) who are kind of my fantasy president. Can't find funding for this program that helps children? No worries. We'll just stop paying $500 for a screwdriver we can get at the hardware store for $5 and use the leftover $495 (per screwdriver) on food programs and after-school programs and utility-assistance programs. It's not that hard.
I'll tag @pr-scatterbrain and @maljic and @ehghtyseven and anyone else who wants to play. (Maybe I want to know you and just don't realize it yet! )))

I've hit the ten picture limit, but part two to this chaos will be posted shortly!

The Justice Department last month filed a lawsuit against Tennessee, challenging a state law that prohibits the provision of “gender-affirming medical care” to minors. Such “care” includes not only off-label hormonal treatments but “gender-reassignment surgery” that alters a patient’s body to make it more like that of the opposite sex. Some blue states, meanwhile, are changing laws to ensure children can be subjected to such treatments without their parents’ knowledge or consent.
The effects of such treatment are permanent, and the campaign to make it available to minors stands in startling contrast to the national consensus about another set of state laws. Those statutes protect children from expressing their identity by receiving a procedure that one federal circuit court held to be a “purely expressive activity fully protected by the First Amendment.” I refer to tattoos, which are far less invasive, less dangerous and less permanent than treatments that supposedly change a child’s sex.
Many red states, blue states and the District of Columbia have absolute bans on permanent tattoos for children. Some blue states’ laws are among the most stringent. In California and Washington, it’s a crime to tattoo any minor under 18. Likewise in Oregon, and a Portland municipal ordinance sets the limit at 21. It’s 16 in Florida and Kentucky and 14 in Idaho. In Illinois, not only are children under 18 prohibited from getting a tattoo, it’s illegal for tattoo parlors to allow them onto the premises unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
States that don’t impose outright bans still have strict parental notification and consent laws. If a child in Michigan wants to get a tattoo reflecting his most deeply held passion—even if his teachers, doctors and other experts support his wish and testify that his views are bona fide and permanent—the tattooist still would risk 93 days in jail and a $2,500 fine if he didn’t secure written parental consent, in person. Florida (for children 14 to 16), Arkansas, Louisiana, Idaho (under 14), Michigan, Nevada, Ohio and Arizona (under 18), among other states, all have similarly strict in-person parental consent laws. All states at minimum require parental notification and written consent.
The penalties for violations can be serious. In Arizona, tattooing a minor without parental consent is a felony. In Louisiana, the tattooist would face a mandatory jail term of 30 days to a year, as well as a mandatory fine. Even in states where the offense is a misdemeanor, it’s often a Class A misdemeanor, the most serious level, with a possible penalty of up to one year in prison. That’s true in Kansas, Illinois and Tennessee and Virginia.
The complete lack of controversy regarding protecting children from permanent tattoos extends beyond the states to groups most vocally concerned for the well-being of children. The American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Psychiatric Association, and American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry all have spoken out against state laws to restrict access to “gender-affirming medical care” for children, including both hormones and surgery. None of those organizations have said a word against the states’ restrictions of children’s right to express their self-identity in the form of a permanent tattoo.
The nationwide consensus that children should be protected from permanent tattoos even extends to many tattoo artists. Jim Riley of Innervision Tattoo in Nevada (where state law requires in-person parental consent for a minor to get a tattoo) writes on the parlor’s website that he wouldn’t tattoo a minor even with parental consent:
“Of all the people I’ve tattooed in my 20+ year tattoo career, most of the cover up tattoos I have done are on people who got tattooed at a young age. It’s very common to hear the phrase ‘I got this tattoo when I was 15 and now I hate it. Can you cover it up?’ A phrase I’ve never heard anyone say is, ‘I got this tattoo when I was 15 and I love it!’ Let’s face it, when we’re teenagers we don’t have the foresight to know what we will like when we are in our 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and beyond.”

Someone will undoubtedly say something stupid - even with me preemptively pointing it out here - that a tattoo isn't "life saving." Let's put aside the extremely questionable nature of the "affirm or suicide" myth and manipulation.
If a child comes to you and says "I don't feel like me without that tattoo, so if I don't get it, I'll kill myself," would you give them the tattoo, or would you suspect there is something wrong here with their emotional and mental state? Wouldn't that urgency and hyperbolic catastophizing make you stop and wonder what was really going on?
Far from being a justification for unquestioningly affirming their need for a tattoo and giving them what they demand, it's very good reason for stopping and questioning why the choice is between a tattoo and death. And how someone who is ready to kill themselves can have the emotional stability and clarity to make such a permanent, life-altering decision. You can't claim that someone is simultaneously at very real risk of self-destruction and has astute, reliable perceptions of reality.
Now imagine thousands of children saying they want tattoos or they'll kill themselves.
The "life saving" argument doesn't do what you think it does.

Name: Lorelei Zhuang Species: Spellcaster Occupation: Tattoo Artist at Seven Serpent's Tattoo Parlor  Age: 27 Years Old Played By: Sofi Face Claim: Leah Lewis
"I spent most of my life living up to people's expectations. I didn’t know who I was when I left the circus, but Wicked’s Rest changed that."
TW: Domestic abuse
For the majority of her childhood, Lorelei never had a place to call home and never stayed in one place for too long. Her father, Jieli, not only was an infamous magician but also the owner of Lord Zhuang’s Enchanted Circus, a business that has run in the family since he was a young spellcaster desperately looking for a new purpose in America. His beautiful wife and assistant, Felicity, stuck with him through thick and thin from the very start, having met him after cutting ties with her sadistic coven. The Zhuangs and their team lived on the road for as long as the Circus has been running, going wherever it was the most profitable and as a result, Lorelei and her siblings were deprived of a stable youth for quite some time. Even at a young age, she knew that keeping the family business wasn’t something she wanted for herself, desiring nothing more, but a life she could call her own. This quickly made her an outsider among both her family and disliked by her co-workers, who thought very highly of her father.
Although he seemed like a pleasant and likable man at first glance, Lorelei was unfortunate enough to know of his true colors behind closed doors — her father was a self-centered egomaniac, who viciously punished her for not being able to awaken her magic and forced her to become an escape artist, so that she would finally see how privileged she allegedly was. While her mother was gentle and loving towards her, she often stayed silent and turned a blind eye to Lorelei’s abuse, due to secretly going through similar mistreatment herself. Meanwhile, her siblings were highly competitive and cutthroat, always at odds with each other to gain their father's praise and love. The public remained blissfully unaware of how dysfunctional the Zhuangs were, viewing Lorelei as a prodigy in her craft and never once questioning the dangers of these acts. It wasn’t until she was fifteen years old and nearly drowned during one of her escape acts, which sparked controversy among the public.
Upon a concerning number of bruises on her being discovered by the paramedics and long, difficult interrogations done to Lorelei’s parents, the eponymous Lord Zhuang was taken in for child abuse and endangerment. This was the beginning of the end for The Circus, which inevitably closed down after numerous scandals were exposed during the investigation. Having no family to turn to during this ordeal, her mother decided to move with her children to Naperville, Illinois in search of greener pastures and a quiet life away from stardom. However, when Lorelei began to act out against her, her peers, and teachers, her fury unlocked her magic, which often led to disastrous consequences. At first, these accidents were brushed off as mere coincidences, but after they happened repeatedly, she was soon branded as a demon and heavily bullied by her classmates. Having no choice, but to stop using her magic and keep her head down, Lorelei turned to the arts to channel all her frustrations into.
It was through drawing and painting that she found her true purpose in life and a way to calm the storm inside her, but little did Lorelei know that this was only a temporary solution to a lifelong problem and that sooner or later, she would have to face her fears and learn how to fully control her water magic. Nonetheless, she kept running away from her demons, just wanting to finish high school in peace and get out of town, which she fully succeeded in by graduating top of her class and getting accepted into the University of Maine at Wicked's Rest. Despite having been told multiple times not to apply for the specific campus, Lorelei wasn’t scared off by the multiple horror stories she found online, especially when she was so desperate to be somewhere where no one knew her name. Majoring in studio art and minoring in graphic design, she got her first taste of an independent life and despite some obstacles she encountered on the way, Lorelei was able to truly find herself.
Ever since her college graduation, her road to adulthood had many ups and downs, as she struggled to keep her powers in check, navigate her friendships and relationships, come to terms with her sexuality, and discover what she wanted to do with her life. Lorelei discovered her love for tattoos, not only getting many done but also starting a three-year apprenticeship at the Seven Serpents Tattoo Parlor. Fighting hard to earn her place among the staff, Lorelei learned her way around the shop and developed a style she can proudly call her own to this day. It has been two years since she became a tattoo artist and Lorelei has found both a place she can call home and something she loves doing, although part of her wonders for how long she will be able to keep her secret from her loved ones, who remain unaware of the hold her past still has on her. What will happen when they find out the truth? Will they still see her as they always have? Or reject her once they discover her true nature?
Character Facts:
Personality: Sincere, imprudent, mercurial, hospitable, caring, fierce
Because of what she went through during her time with her family’s Enchanted Circus, Lorelei suffers from a rather debilitating case of stage fright that was unaddressed for years. This is the main reason she kept her singing talent a secret until her friends persuaded her to show it off one night at The Siren’s Song.
If you’re within her secret of closest friends, you will know that Lorelei is very much a film buff, a trait that was passed down from her mother. Her passion for cinema runs so deep that she owns an extensive collection of DVDs that consist of her favorite movies. That said, she frequents the Midnight Drive-In whenever she can.
For as long as she can remember, Lorelei has either worn hand-me-downs from her mother’s punk rock days or turned to thrift shops to get more clothes. She has sworn by DIYing pieces she owns to give them her own personal touch, which became an easier task during the time she worked at The Party Thrifter while pursuing her apprenticeship.
Although she and her mother have drifted apart since her move, Lorelei still tries her best to stay in touch with her siblings. While her siblings have resisted her attempts at reaching out, her twin brother, Theodore, has been less antagonizing toward her. The two have grown much closer during the last two years and the older Zhuang is even considering moving to Wicked’s Rest in the future.
Her unwillingness to open up and be honest with her partners has made it difficult for Lorelei to stay in long-term relationships. As a result, she gravitates toward one-night stands and hookups, in which not much is required of her emotionally. In her experience, the less familiar she is with someone, the less likely she is to lose control of her emotions. She would never admit it out loud, but deep down, she’s not as satisfied as she would like to be.

why dr. iplier x yancy x host FUCKS HARD so heres a WIP thats been sitting in my drafts unfinished and will never be finished. rip
okay imagine, right? Dr. Iplier and the Host are dancing around each other always on the verge of saying something to one another about their feelings but the Host is excellent at talking about everything except whats important and Dr. Iplier thinks hes good at reading people but he’s not. They’re both kind of shy and they’re both kind of oblivious to the other’s feelings. If whatever Dark and Wilford have going on, wasn’t going on, then Dr. Iplier and Host would be the most interesting thing to occur in the ego meetings. maybe. there’s a lot of chaos there.
anyway they’re dancing around each other and they’re experts at it too. Then Heist drops and they get three new dudes. One is a pirate who’s practically never around because he loves adventure so damn much, the other dude also says he loves adventure so he goes on like weekend trips once a month but he stays in the mansion, and then you have the last guy. Who never leaves the mansion. Hell, does he even go in the backyard? Naturally they think he’s an introvert. Host is maybe hoping he’s got a book buddy who won’t mind a bit of blood; after all this guy showed up in a prison garb with tattoos and bandaids all over. Dr. Iplier really wants to give him a check-up since Captain Magnum’s never around for him to check up on him, and Illinois has submitted to three different check-ups already for each adventure he goes off to, but this prison guy has already figured out the entire layout of the mansion and is quick and quiet as a fish, or eel, or some other creature that can slither away without notice. Hell, he’s an escape artist when he wants to be and he knows every nook and cranny. It’s driving Dr. Iplier up the wall.
He finally gets his hands on the guy by cornering him after an ego meeting, and maybe it was undignified to scramble out of his seat like that the moment Dark lets them go, but the last meeting Yancy disappeared and the meeting before that was the when Yancy was introduced and Dr. Iplier has mistakenly thought that Yancy would show himself to the doctor’s office back then. He knows better now.
“Yancy. If you would come with me please.” His grip is iron around the ex-prisoner’s bicep.

I was tagged by @fitzonomy, lets party!
1) Are you named after anyone?
No, my parents named all of us to have 'Y' as our last letters in our name and that's about it. I will say that I was the only name in my school for my whole educational life, but the second I get into my current job I meet like 700 of them every month.
2) When was the last time you cried?
Last week? Big emotions need big outlet and big crying made everything feel better.
3) Do you have kids?
Nope, don't plan on it.
4) What sports do you play/have you played?
I've done swimming and diving, got a few medals in diving in high school. I currently do archery though Covid and a recently healed shoulder injury has prevented me getting back out onto the range. I'm also a beast at mini-golf.
5) Do you use sarcasm?
Absolutely. There is a place for everything, but I usually use it in pairing with playing a bit with my fiance.
6. What’s the first thing you notice about people?
I guess just visually, anything aesthetically pleasing. And I try to share it with my customers since they're of a range of ages and anyone likes a decent compliment. A cool tattoo, fun hair colors, nice jewelry or a dress. After that I notice mannerisms and change my behavior to assist them. Like if they're left handed, I change my distribution of stuff so they can grab it with their dominate hand. Trouble picking up flat things off a table? I hold it in the air to grab. Things like that.
7. What’s your eye colour?
Brown to the point of black.
8. Scary movies or happy endings?
Why not both?
9. Any talents?
I whistle to a degree that impresses anyone I meet. I can mimic bird songs, do almost any cover of a song in whistle format. Do this thing where I whistle and hum at the same time and give it a vibrating tone to it.
10. Where were you born?

I haven't had a Saturday off in years, and the last office job I had was racist against me SOOOOO

Would you design a tattoo that you couldn’t physically tattoo? I’m in illinois so I’m not sure if I’d be able to travel to Florida to have you do it. Or do you prefer to only design tattoos that you physically will be inking? Just thought I’d ask out of curiosity :D thank you so much!
I'd be happy to design something for you, I'd probably just price it the same as my normal commissions depending on what it is that you want. If its something I like and you wouldnt mind me tattooing it on someone else I could do it a bit cheaper. Feel free to reach out to me about it!
Btw I think its great to talk to tattoo artists specifically about designing tattoos for you, even if they won't be able to physically tattoo you. There are a lot of things that go into designing a tattoo, more than just creating a nice picture, you have to make sure it works for the medium! A lot of people who are great artists fall short when making tattoo designs because they aren't aware of what will look best when transferring it to skin.

BIOGRAPHY
PAST,
Homelessness tw, teen pregnancy tw adoption mention tw brief death mention
Zelda "Ziggy" Adira Abrams didn’t have a real home until she was 12 years old. Her mother Miriam had her at just 16 years old, and the two lived in and out of homeless shelters, run-down apartments, and friends’ places throughout her childhood. Up until they moved into an actual home, she had never known anything other than moving around, being a nomad, herself, and her young mother.
Ziggy, named after Zelda Fitzgerald but nicknamed after the infamous David Bowie persona, was resigned to raising herself as well as her mother. She had to grow up and be an adult from a young age, from circling job ads in newspapers and making sure they made it to the shelter on time to get a room, or at least to eat. There was never any real room to be a child.
It was Ziggy and her mother alone for a good while, until when she was five years old. A five-year-old Ziggy had no idea why her mother’s body was changing, she just knew that sometime later they were inside a hospital, there was a baby in her arms,  and then suddenly, there wasn’t.  They walked out of the hospital, just her and her mother, alone again. Ziggy would learn many, many, many years later, that her mother gave her little sister up for adoption.
Ziggy learning to read and loving to read is credited to her mother in many ways, the first being that her mother would take her to the library during the day to keep warm and have something to do, and Ziggy needed an escape from everything. It started with princesses in high towers being rescued by their prince and turned into sometimes cheesy, but often thrilling, romance novels. Ziggy fell in love with love.
When they finally got a real home, it was only because her grandmother passed away, leaving the three-bedroom home to her only daughter, Ziggy, and her mother Miriam moved right in.
It was all rather the same Ziggy needed to raise both herself and her mother, except this time her mother had landed herself a job, a waitress at a diner at night. During the day, Ziggy would go to school, and a night her mother would head off to work, leaving the young girl alone to her own devices.
But ultimately, Miriam Abrams wasn’t the mother a young girl needed. She didn’t get the puberty talk, she wasn’t taught how to do her hair or makeup, these were all things she had to pick up from magazines. She learned to cook enough to feed herself, but she was barely allotted a childhood, having to be the adult her mother wasn’t. No pretty dresses or elaborate bat mitzvahs paid for by her mother's boyfriend could make up for it.
Ziggy left the first moment she could. With a high school diploma, 1,000$ to her name, and a bus ticket, she was off to California, as far away from her mother as she could possibly get.
Ziggy slept on couches again and worked odd jobs until she found something more permanent as a waitress,  paying 30 dollars a night to sleep in a bedroom that had a curfew of 10:00 pm. She didn’t go to college. She had no direction whatsoever. She just wanted to experience life.
So experience she did, she lived in California, Seattle, and New York, and finally, she landed herself in Colorado, just her, her beat-up little jeep wrangler, her books, and a few garbage bags filled with clothes.
PRESENT
That was five years ago now, and Ziggy has been the happiest, and the most stable she's ever been. She's got a dream job as a barista at the Green Thumb, reading, and writing romance novels in her free time. It's her dream to be published, to walk into a library and see her name amongst her favorites, but for now, just writing them is enough. She lives in Artist's Alley Apartments in RINo and has an orange Maine Coon cat named Papaya. She still has no idea what she's doing, but she's happy and having fun trying to figure it out. She sends her mother money once a month.

comrade monte @personalmephistopheles tagged me so i have no choice but to do this.
the meme is to pick your favourite song off every album by an artist of your choice so of course i am choosing my good friend miss sufjan.
for selection criteria i excluded based on lack of familiarity with the album (enjoy your rabbit, run rabbit run, aporia) and general inability to recall songs distinctly from one another (convocations). otherwise all album releases are covered here.
let us begin
A Sun Came (1999): A Sun Came
this one came down between "a sun came" and "kill", and though i love murder, the title track came out in front. the album as a whole misses more than it hits, but i think it's impressive how his first album demonstrates so many of his musical sensibilities and many of his production and instrumentation choices can be traced back to here. i'm a big fan of the stripped back, double tracked with falsetto sound, as you can see here. i find "a sun came" just that much more interesting than "kill" in terms of melody and lyricism.
(Greetings from) Michigan (2003): Romulus
its me!
Seven Swans (2004): Sister
im choosing this largely in part due to my fondness for sufjan bootlegs and several live performances of this where the crowd participation really elevates the song. check out the archive @/sufjanlive if you would like to find these live versions! though i enjoy the studio track here immensely as well
(Come On Feel The) Illinoise (2005): The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us!
im a simple man. for a very long time i had planned for my first tattoo to be a wasp on my arm because of this song and im happy to say that wish has been fulfilled
The Avalanche (2006): Pittsfield
the vulnerability of the lyrics of this song, how it combines resignation with courage, does a phenomenal job telling this story of the innocence of youth being lost as a result of the shortcomings of a parent, but also of how that loss can be liberating. the hopeful, almost triumphant outro always gets to me. i also feel this is a song where sufjan's falsetto truly shines. i understand the reasoning behind why it wasn't included on Illinois, but i do wish it got more recognition outside of sufjan fans.
Songs for Christmas (2006): Sister Winter
acknowledging that i would exclude all songs that were not sufjan originals from this selection, even if i were not, sister winter would be my choice. it's not just one of my favourite of his christmas songs, but one of my favourite songs from his whole discography! what can i say i love a sufjan song that builds into an anthem
The BQE (2009): Postlude—Critical Mass
this is revenge for the all delighted people piano pieces being unavailable online
The Age of Adz (2010): I Want To Be Well
one of the most songs to lose your voice screaming along to. yeah sufjan!!! i am NOT fucking around!!
All Delighted People (2010): All Delighted People (Original Version) / The Owl And The Tanager
technically this is an ep, not an album, but there's no way i wasn't going to cover it. "all delighted people (original version)" plays my brain and my emotions in a most phenomenal way. the orchestration! the choir! i had so much to give in spite of all the terror and abuse!! i love the structure between the verses and the chorus and how the song changes as it progresses. "the owl and the tanager" evokes such brilliant imagery along with these heart-rending lyrics, and the way sufjan's vocal delivery goes between a whisper and a wail. i couldn't exclude it from this list; it's one of my favourite songs of his, and another one to seek out live performances of.
Silver & Gold (2012): Carol of St. Benjamin The Bearded One
this is another wonderful vocal performance from sufjan. i'm not a trained vocalist, but i can hold my own while singing most things. this is a real challenge for me! and the delivery and lyrics complement one another so well. an honourable mention to "barcarola (you must be a christmas tree)" because it makes me insane
Carrie & Lowell (2015): John My Beloved / Eugene
the summer of 2015 i think this was just about the only thing i listened to. i included two selections from this album for several reasons. the first is that it's my favourite sufjan album, and probably album of all time. the second is that "john my beloved" is my favourite sufjan song and definitely my favourite song of all time, so it wouldnt be fair to other songs on the album. the third is that if i were to list all sufjan songs from most to least favourite, all of this album ranks in the top 25. my most physical and visceral reaction to music was the first time i heard "eugene", a sensation which i can recall with perfect clarity. so it must be included
Carrie & Lowell Live (2017): Blue Bucket of Gold / Blue Bucket Outro - Live
i would kill a man if it would allow me to time travel and see this performed live and im serious
Planetarium (2017): Mercury
i was so excited when they announced they were releasing a studio version of planetarium! those who are not sufjanistas will never again have to suffer like a pre-2017 sufjan fan navigating all the performances of the project. i saw this video while they were doing press for the album and its just wonderful. another beautiful vocal performance from sufjan!! man i love him so much
The Greatest Gift (2017): Wallowa Lake Monster
i love a 7 minute narrative song where the last 3 minutes are an instrumental outro. im going to say it again but the vocals on this song!!! fucking!!! again, another b-sides album exemption i can understand, but the lyrics and imagery and instrumentation are so heady and lush that i wish it hadn't been delegated to a secondary release.
The Decalogue (2019): IV / V
i would get into ballet for sufjan. not the dance itself but watching it. i feel this is a good place to ask anyone if they know where to find everywhere we go because for the life of me i cannot track it down
The Ascension (2020): The Ascension
i first listened to this song while watching the youtube premiere with a bunch of other sufjan fans! this was my favourite off the album then and it still is now. on an album that structurally diverges in many places from his other work, it combines a familiar sufjan format (a longer song that builds over the song) with the pop sensibilities he's expressing on this album in a way that i find to be very successful.
A Beginner's Mind (2021): Lacrimae
perhaps its improper to choose a song off this album that is more of an angelo de augustine vessel than a sufjan track but i really love this one. because the songs are loosely inspired by movies, i find a lot of them to be fixated on the source material, sometimes to their detriment. this one is considerably stripped back compared to other songs and i think it's a fantastic way to end the album. i was tempted to choose "olympus" but i enjoy the vocals of "lacrimae" too much to choose anything else.
if you read all of this thank you! i'm not going to tag anyone at this time, but if we are mutuals and you enjoy doing these kind of things on tumblr let me know and i'll keep you in mind for the future! go and enjoy the abundance of the world around you
