hi! I've been watching lots of movies with my sister recently and I can't get her into horror because she dosnt like scary stuff but I was thinking I might try and show her some weird movies instead. you are the God of movies in my head so I was wondering if you have any weird movie recs?

this question is very good because it had me mulling this over all day! i had to sort of question myself on what i would categorize as “weird cinema,” and after much deliberation i’ve come up with a few very subjective definitions:

1) a film with an arthouse or experimental sensibility, often that shifts our world slightly to the left and plays with larger concepts of reality, philosophy, identity, etc by use of dreamlike or psychotropic visual styles, odd imagery, metaphor made literal, surrealism, and slightly “off” performance:

brazil, 3 women, the cook, the thief, his wife and her lover, a zed & two noughts, paprika, the fall, urusei yatsura: beautiful dreamer, wild at heart, daisies, orlando, nowhere, the adjuster, enter the void, teknolust, august in the water, company of wolves* (some scary imagery but peak 80’s fantasy with horror aspects)

2) weirdo cinema, cinema that is by or about weirdos, that no matter how realistically grounded a film may be in its content, that simply being steeped in the world of weirdos is enough to make a film weird:

saved!, election, welcome to the dollhouse, lars and the real girl, problemista, secretary, raising arizona, the king of comedy, moonstruck, vampire’s kiss*, after hours, desperately seeking susan, gates of heaven, tickled, the quiet family*

3) WTF cinema, cinema that often works within genre and plays by genre rules however approaches the material and genre in ways that are unexpected or play out with transgressive results, hard to explain, but often leads to expressions of “wtf,” “this is unhinged,” and “this is fucking wild,” or “holy shit.” often will exaggerate and push genre tropes to their limits:

total recall*, sukiyaki western django, killer joe, tank girl, police story, shaolin soccer, crimes of passion, body double*, cry baby, blood for dracula* (this is sexy camp with blood but also like absurd blood so it’s not so much scary as it is ludicrous :3), phantom of the paradise*, communion*, lisztomania

i hope there’s some stuff in here that you like and these are some of the kinds of movies you’re looking for!!! if you like any of these then lemme know and i can make a more specifically tailored list for you!!! and this is only just a little scratch on the surface of weird cinema, i don’t even know if i wholly agree with these definitions still but damn i do like this selection!!! some of these have horror elements but nothing too intense, i would watch a couple trailers and gauge whether they’re gonna be too scary! i’ll mark them with a * :3

This would be Hospital AU + Dance AU which is fun. I am about to reveal that I don't know a whole lot about dancing or hospitals, but!

Okay Anakin is a reasonably famous dancer (probably ballet? I have a friend who does ballet so I could ask questions and refuse to explain why) who suffers a severe, possibly career ending, injury.

Obi-Wan is his physical therapist who helps him recover by being patient and stern when Anakin gets frustrated with his slow progress and also by being very handsome (you can't tell me injuries don't heal faster when Obi-Wan is at his handsomest).

There's a lot of pining because Obi-Wan can't date a patient obviously so he ignores Anakin's flirting and sexy stretching, but then Anakin is finally healed and is like "...maybe I should break the other leg so we have an excuse to hang out some more" but instead Obi-Wan finally kisses him and they are in love forever!

hi I love reading your takes on saltburn so much!! i love your fae parallels <3 what i really really liked was how in the end oliver wasnt any deeper or more 'moral' than the cattons, it is all about greed and want, how societies perceptions have more influence than reality, the importance we place on things that dont really exist. i think most people place an importance on oliver or the plot expecting it to diliver a 'moral' to tell us something 'meaningful' we already know and want to hear (like oliver to the cattons) to make us feel better about ourselves/life/the world. when instead it just shows us shallowness. if you want to find a meaning behind the movie it's like a reflection people don't really want to see. I think it highlights the pointlessness behind believing everything has a meaningful reason. capitalism, beauty, materialism, societal norms, they are all consepts witch are ultimately nothing. they are not meaningful other then how they make us more acceptable to others. the cattons are the epitome of what is acceptable to others and oliver uses that to his advatage to achive not something 'meaningful' but just something that he wants. anyway that's my take!

I love coming onto your blog and seeing you talking about films and desires and things you love. I read all your reviews and I love your insight and style of not just telling us if the film is good or bad this or that, but scooping out the leftovers of your meal and showing us it in your hands, here this is how I consumed it, how I loved it, how it impacted me or made me feel, here are the bits that tasted the best or filled me the most. here is how it may fill you also. I have never really had the patience or desire to watch movies but slowly I have been understanding the apeal and seeing your reviews or your posts about movies has made me want to watch so much more. and I have!! Jennifer's body is my favourite movie which I watched bc of you and I have gotten so much more into horror and I want to thank you so much for that!!! and im definitely going to watch saltburn as soon as I can!

13. talk about a writing experience that has pleasantly surprised you.

I'm not sure this is totally what the game is asking, but the thing that leaps to mind is getting engagement here! I do know how I want all my stories to go and there's much less wiggle room in some fics, but before I finished my archaeologist au I got a bunch of suggestions of things god Obi-Wan and Anakin could do together. And I managed to incorporate a couple! (I wondered if I should credit the anons? But I figured it was more of a request kind of situation?)

Anyway, I love it. Writing can be kind of lonely sometimes, especially if the chapter you're writing is stupidly long. I like hearing what people want to see, even if I can't necessarily provide it in a certain fic for characterization reasons. There's a social aspect to fic writing that I find is absent from some of the other writing I do.
