*pretty sure his name was ted e. but probably not lol
UPDATE! Here is a mockup/recreation of the thumbnail I made! (except the building was a generic building, not cec)
a couple of months ago (I think mid march) I saw a video about this kids place with a bear mascot (yes it was a real place. no fnaf jokes plz!) with no info for it online except for a token and a low quality grainy logo. the video was called something like "The Mystery Of Beary Bearington's" or something idk. I even typed in stuff like "animatronic lost media" and "bear kids restaurant lost media" the point is if you can help me find the video or even just the channel that would be amazing :3 (ill post a pic of my recreation of what I remember the thumbnail was soon!)
extra note: I thought it was by the animatronic yt channel "mr cream o wheat man" but 4 some reason all I could find was a channel called "mr. cream o wheat man archive" with no vids so idk what that's all abt.

Aeria gush post 1
This is going to be a long post with some spoilerly content Welcome to my ted talk where I gush about the prelude / first episode of my comic, Aeria. My art has evolved a lot over the 5 years I’ve been working on my project, so some of the stuff at the beginning is a bit rough. 💙 First cover I wanted to include as much as the cast as possible. Starting at the top, Praesule the world eating serpent. Morringgha, a dead necromancer who is possessing people through jewelry. On the left, Luarsha leader of the Aposaarians (bad guys) with her three underlings: Iris (muscle) Reseda (Luarsha’s daughter), and Edann (brains). At the bottom in the middle is Mira, the MC, and behind her is how Praesule presents herself in Mira’s mind. To the left is Noe (Mira’s baby manticore cat), Cal (love interest), and Via (Mira’s cousin/friend). On the right is Aaron (Cal’s friend) and Edaeron (Cal’s fraternal twin). I’m actually planning on making a new cover soon. I love this one, but it’s a tad crowded, so I was going to make one focusing on two characters.
💙Thumbnail for season 1 Mira is a human girl who finds out she’s not from Earth. She’s originally from a planet called Ailithyia and of a race of elves with wings called Iylven (ill-vin). There are nine races of aliens on the planet, but I’ll get into that a bit later. The symbol in the middle is the sigil of her homeworld. I wanted to draw her human and Iylven form back to back.
💙Prelude Mira dreams about a salt lake and sees another version of herself in the reflection. This reflection pulls her under. The panel will have a lot more meaning once I get to making the spin-off comic; NEO. Basically, multi-verse and time line stuff happens.
💙 Prelude Mira is pulled under the surface. I just think this panel is neat. I want to re-draw it some day with more detail.
💙 Episode 1 Part 1 Mira, the MC, wakes up after her dream. She lives at Sylvia Rose’s Academy in the dorms. A majority of the children stay at the school year-round; their parents are rich and influential people which don’t have much time to devote to child-raising, so the kids get shipped off here.
💙 Episode 1 Part 1 The first panel we see of the aliens, the Ailithyians. When sending an envoy to Earth, the Ailithyians elected the Iylven to represent them as they were the most humanoid-looking of the nine races on homeworld.
💙Episode 1 Part 2 Mira and her best friend Erica. Mira is a bit skeptical of the Iylven’s true intentions on Earth, while Erica attempts to convince her that they are harmless.
💙Episode 1 Part 2 A picture of the entire friend group: Nathan Backous - son of CEO of Backous-Tech, a scientist corporation which works for the government. They company primarily researches genetics. Pessimistic and and rooted in facts. Mira Harthan - adoptive daughter of Dr. Derrek Harthan, a scientist that works at Backous-Tech. The MC of the story. She can be a bit dorky, but has a good heart. Jackie Goodwin - daughter of Dr.Goodwin, another scientist at Backous-Tech. Easily excitable, very low social cues. Erica Jones - daughter of Dr. Jones, yet another scientist at Backous-Tech. Mira’s best friend. Has a good heart, but full of sarcasm.
💙Episode 1 Part 3 Chrissy (bully) and her friend Suzi. The Iylven send transfer students to schools all over America in attempts to find their missing goddess. Three of them- Cal, Via, and Aaron- attend Sylvia Rose’s Academy. The two girls start arguing over who gets to date Cal.
💙 Episode 1 Part 3 The teacher picks Mira to escort Cal around the school. Cal is suspicious of Mira because of her necklace- she is human and she is wearing their goddess’s necklace. He’s worried that the humans have done something to her and thinks Mira is in on it. Mira has already noticed that Cal doesn’t seem to like her based on the glares he gives her. And now the two are forced to spend quality time together :)
If you want to read more, check out this link: https://globalcomix.com/c/aeria I’ll be making these panel appreciation posts on and off. Thanks for reading my rant 🙏

Inspiration For A Rainy Day
A/N: A little over a year ago I was having some down days and wrote this. Posted it in my Wattpad one-shot book exactly a year tomorrow, and figured it might finally be time to post it here. I know Jackie isn’t everyone’s comfort ego, but this was self-indulgent, so help me. If it makes you feel better, too, that’s great! Hopefully Jackie’s encouragement isn’t too awkward, heh
.
A scheduled livestream, only sometime after Jack released his video for the day. It was surprising, but welcome - at least it would end the day off on a good note...
You sat down on your bed with a mug of cocoa, just listening to the light rain outside your window as you waited for the notification to pop up. One more minute...
The countdown to the hour started and you got cozy. The stream title was vague, but not quite cryptic - "Inspiration/Encouragement for a Rainy Day" - but the thumbnail was another thing; simply a smiling Jack sitting close to the camera, with a familiar blue superhero mask settled atop his head. An ego video, but a streamed one? Weird.
3... 2... 1...
The screen flashed to life and there he was, sitting in the gaming chair and wearing his red spandex suit. Surprisingly, it still fit after all these years. He didn't speak for a moment, looking to the side at another monitor, probably waiting to see if the stream was working before smiling big and nodding at something, then finally facing the camera.
"Hey guys!" He started immediately. "So you're wondering what's going on here, huh? Yes, I can see you in the chat," he laughed and sat back, getting comfortable. He pulled his legs up and curled his arms around them like a hug and continued. "Call me Jackieboy, if you want. Jackie works too. Most of you know who I am, but for those who don't, I'm an ego you created! Thank you for that."
As an ego theorist yourself, this almost made you tear up. He was thanking you for helping create him. And what an honour it was.
"Weird streaming time? Yeah, perhaps it is kind of late. I couldn't sleep." By your calculations, it was 2 am in Brighton. Jack, you silly... "And by that logic, I felt it was the perfect time to stream! Just wanted to spend time with you guys, I guess." He looked to the chat again. "If it's too late and you have stuff to do later, go. You can always rewatch this. Aside from spending time though, I also had a little message for you. You watching, or listening, depending on if you're doing anything in the background. You...
You're doing great, even if you don't think so or your mental illness tells you otherwise. You're doing the best you can, no matter how much or little that actually is. And if you've had a rough day, or week, or, hell, even the entire year, it will get better sooner or later. Hopefully sooner, of course. And sometimes there's nothing you can do, so the best you can do is be patient, and that's okay too. I promise, it's worth it; the wait or the final result of whatever it is that's going on.
And if you have any ongoing projects that you're struggling to finish, it's all right to take breaks. I've learned that the hard way, as a superhero and all," he winked at the camera but you barely noticed through the tears clouding your vision. "Sometimes all you need to hear is some encouragement and I hope this can be that push to those of you who need it.
It will turn out okay; it will be worth it. I— we promise. All of us, egos and Seán."
He smiled and you noticed he had tears in the corners of his eyes too, but he tried to keep them away by rubbing at his face.
As soon as he looked back up his eyes drifted to the chat. "You want me to say... okay, sure, if it gets you motivated." Jackie quickly put his hand up in a thumbs up position at the camera and smiled big, "You can do the thing! I believe in you! That good?" He giggled.
"If you guys have any other requests, I'd be happy to fulfill them as we talk. Yes, yes, then I'll sleep. Let's do this."
You fell asleep watching the stream, your cocoa going cold on the bedside table, but happiness on your mind and pleasant dreams filling your head all night long.

Just Sit Down!
I know in the USA that some states are starting to pull back on their self-isolation orders but Please, I’m begging you to listen to the science.
This isn’t over.
We need to continue to flatten the curve.
STAY AT HOME.

Summary: Peter Parker is a man... well, teenager of action. Therefore he and 'social distancing' don't exactly mix and he's about to drive Tony up a wall. The good news is he's able to come up with a plan that will undoubtedly wear his kid out.

From the moment the virus, the pandemic, hit the United States, May immediately started talking precautions. One of which was making sure that Peter was being careful while on his patrols. No diving into crowds, cleaning his hands regularly and washing his suit after every single use. Peter complained that she was being overprotective. Insisting that they had no proof that he could get sick at all but being a nurse, she didn't relent. They didn't know enough about his immune system to be sure that he couldn't catch this particular virus and even if he couldn't, he could still spread it. Being cautious was the best course of action.
Later when things began to spread, the local and national governments decided that social distancing was the best way to slow the progression and prevent the healthcare systems from being overwhelmed. That meant that events were being canceled, the schools were being closed and businesses were beginning to move towards a 'curb-side pickup model'... it not temporarily closing their doors altogether.
At that time, May was the first to volunteer to take on extra shifts at the hospital. Especially as some of her co-workers began having to navigate through a sudden need for child care or had fallen ill themselves. She didn't mind the extra work, it was hard but it was also fulfilling. The problem was that it didn't take long after the first major influx of patients for the hospital's supply of personal protection equipment to begin to run frighteningly low. That didn't stop her from pressing forward. She knew she was part of the frontline. People's lives were in her hands. That wasn't to say that she wasn't worried. In order to prevent the possibility of bringing the virus home to Peter, she did the next most responsible thing she could think of. She sent him to stay with Tony and she knew she was extremely lucky to have that sort of an option for her nephew. Many families didn't.
Having Peter stay at the tower actually eased most of May's major concerns. Not only did it reduce the possibility of her passing the virus on to him, should she be directly exposed, it also meant that he would be well fed. Getting enough supplies to properly feed an enhanced teenager during a time when people were buying in bulk out of fear was difficult. That wasn't a problem for Tony. He always had a large supply of everything stocked up at the tower. It came from housing several heroes, including a super-soldier. However, she also relieved to know that the man would be available to make sure that Peter didn't try to sneak out as she knew he was itching to do.
Tony was, as expected, quick to accommodate. He even made sure to have May's kitchen stocked for her. She tried to refuse but he simply waved her off. Saying that he'd already made several large donations to various community food pantries and created a few helpful programs of his own to support the at-risk communities. Supplying her with two weeks' worth of frozen dinners and canned goods that he already had laying around was nothing. "Besides, you're really helping me out. The team is sort of spread out across the country, Pepper's stuck overseas for the time being and the penthouse is entirely too quiet.", he said, not really knowing at the time, what exactly he'd signed up for.
~o~o~o~o~o~
By day five of being completely banned from Spidering at both May and Tony's insistence, Peter was starting to go a little bit stir-crazy. He'd not used his web-shooters or any of his spider-powers during that entire time and he had so much pent up energy that he could feel himself vibrating. "I need to get out.", he randomly jumped up and announced after having been jittering in place for the past twenty minutes while Tony watched the news.
"No, you don't. Sit down.", Tony casually stated before flipping the channel to something a little more upbeat.
"I can't sit down. There're... things I could be doing out there.", Peter retorted as he began to pace.
Tony hummed in response. "Like what?", he asked despite knowing the answer. He knew the kid was going nuts from sitting around. A daily jog at the nearby park wasn't enough. Not when he was having to go at a leisurely human pace.
"I don't know! Things!", Peter snapped but felt instantly sorry for having done so. Taking a deep breath he looked longingly out the window and sighed. "Stopping crime. The usual."
"There's nobody out there, kiddo. ...and the police are already taking precautions to help handle any kind of mass panic.", Tony helpfully supplied but the boy didn't look convinced, instead, he went back to pacing the room and periodically sighing.
Eventually, Peter paused in front of where his mentor was sitting and began to chew on his thumbnail. "Maybe I could help buy groceries for the elderly or something.", he suggested because that sounded reasonable. He could swing around the city and deliver necessities to people who otherwise shouldn't be out. That would allow him to really move while helping the community.
"Stark Industries funded an emergency drone delivery service for that very purpose. It's free, highly advertised and my understanding is that it's getting a lot of use.", Tony replied and steeled himself for an argument that never came. Instead, the kid when back to pacing. Then, the pacing turned into digging around in the kitchen and before he knew it, the boy was back in front of him.
"We're out of pudding, Mr. Stark. I should go out and get some.", Peter stated matter-of-factly, shifted his weight as he spoke.
"Pete... I have enough food to feed me, you, May and a small army for the next three months, you'll be fine for the next two or three weeks.", Tony said in exasperation. A lack of pudding was not even slightly on his radar. Lack of coffee might have gotten his attention but he knew better than that. The coffee he liked was delivered to his door, in bulk, on a monthly basis. Not to mention the backup supply he kept in the back of the freezer. "Don't you have some homework you can sit down to do?"
Midtown had turned to digital learning for the duration of the preventative period and posted assignments daily. Extensive ones. Yet, Peter had managed to blow through them in record time. "I finished it already.", he said with a shrug of his shoulders.
Throwing his hand up in mild annoyance, Tony rolled his eyes. Of course, the kid was done with his homework. "Well, call Ned or do that Discord gaming thingy that you do. Just sit down, kid!"
"We did that already today", peter complained as he began to absentmindedly bounce on his toes. "You can only play so much Minecraft, Mr. Stark."
Tony huffed a laugh. "Really because it wasn't that long ago you were all, '...but there are bees now, Mr. Stark...', when I asked you put the game down for ten minutes to help me with something in the lab.", he playfully mocked. He really didn't understand the fascination with the game and this was coming from a man who's entire generation had thrived on clunky plastic cartridges and boxy eight-bit characters.
Crossing his arms in front of him, Peter, sighed and then reluctantly plopped down into a chair only to then relentlessly tap his foot on the hardwood floor. "I have a short attention span, Mr. Stark. The bees are no longer of interest.", he proclaimed and then immediately stood up to continue his aimless wandering.
"Do you want to go down to the workshop?", Tony asked next. Even if they had run out of things to do as far as Spider-suit updates go, there was always an abundance of half-finished projects down there to look at. He sort of hoped that he could get the kid's brain working and that would, in turn, temporarily cease to the whining. "We can do whatever you want as long as you stop pacing. You're going to wear a hole in my carpet. Sit down!"
"Why can't I go out as Spider-man, Mr. Stark?", Peter pleaded, not really expecting any kind of surprising answer. He'd already asked that question multiple times over the last few days and the response wasn't likely to have changed.
"You know why, kid.", Tony warningly returned causing the boy to grunt in frustration and then turn back towards the large windows. It was as though the sly line was calling his name. No screaming. The skyline was screaming his name.
"What if I just swing around for like, an hour and then back. No direct peopling.", Peter begged, hoping that was enough of a compromise. While he missed talking to his many neighbors, shaking hands and playing with all the children in the streets but he did understand. He was just aching to get out. Like he would suffocate soon if he didn't.
Rolling his eyes, Tony sat up taller in his seat and pointed an accusatory finger towards the pouting teenager. "Right. Do you think you can just sit there and lie to me like that? I've met you and there is zero chance of you going out in that suit and not talking to every single person you come across."
"I promise, Mr. Stark!", Peter nearly shouted but his mentor remained placid.
"Nope.", Tony causally countered but when it looked like the kid might actually start to cry he relented. Just a little. It wasn't that he had any real problem with Spider-man going out to swing the afternoon away. The problem was he didn't trust the teenager behind the mask to not dive right into the middle of the first crowd he spotted. He required supervision and he supposed that technically he could offer that. "What if I go with you?", he proposed.
Narrowing his eyes, Peter tried to decide what the man had meant by that. "Like... as my sidekick?", he asked, feigning confusion.
"Iron Man is nobody's sidekick, Spider-boy.", Tony impassively asserted. "I'm going as your--"
"--Equal?", Peter pipped up with a wide smile. He knew that was definitely not what the man was going to say either but he was sure his mentor's reaction would be nothing less than entertaining and he desperately needed some entertainment.
"That's cute, Pete but no.", Tony said with a smirk. "I'm going as your Superhero mentor or what have you.", he flippantly declared before turning the television off completely. Apparently his spider-child required another, more vigorous walk.
Peter stood by the window and quietly contemplated the offer. It didn't really take that long for him to decide that the plan, though vague was good enough for him. If it meant getting to use his web-shooters, that was all he needed to hear. That didn't make him any less curious about what the man had in mind, though. "That's cool. What are we going to do?"
"Oh, I have a few ideas.", Tony said with a grin.
Within the next thirty minutes, the two for them were suited up and on top of the building. While Peter hopped in place Tony stood there rapidly typing something into his phone. "What are you doing?", Peter asked as he tried to see over the man's shoulder. "I thought we were going to actually do something."
For several seconds the man didn't dignify the question but when he did he was smiling triumphantly. "There we go. ...Now you can swing around and get your crazies out while doing something nice.", he stated before turning his phone so that Peter could read his latest tweet. 'Bored inside? Spider-man and I are about to hit the skies for some practice. Enjoy the show from your windows.', it read and tagged several specific locations including the nearby children's hospital.
"That... is a really cool idea, Mr. Stark!", Peter giddily exclaimed.
"It was one of my more genius plans.", Tony said with a flourish of his armored hand. "Now, let's get going, that's a lot of ground to cover.", he added, engaging his faceplate and then subsequently shooting a mild repulsor beam directly between the kid's feet calling out, "Tag, you're it!", before taking off into the sky.
"Hey! I wasn't ready, Mr. Stark!", Peter laughed as his mentor hovered tauntingly above him. Though, before he had the chance to gather his thoughts or shoot a web towards the nearest building the man was swooping back towards him.
"You coming or what, Spider-kid?", Tony said, holding out his hand with the intention of taking another shot but before it could go off, Peter managed to get his wits about him and shot a web towards the man's outstretched hand. Completely undaunted by his now web covered palm, Tony didn't change his position. Instead, he raised his face-plate and smiled. "Nice try, Spiderling.", he calmly replied right before the repulsor went off, burning right through the webs and hitting peter right on the heels as he had already begun to run towards the edge of the rooftop.
They continued to soar through the city, playing their superhero version of tag while people cheered them on from their windows and balconies. Some of them wearing their hero of choice's colors while others held up signs to show support. Although, Peter's favorite part of the entire chaotic outing was climbing up the side of the children's hospital and waving to the kids as they sat up in their beds giggling whenever Tony would zap him in the rear. It was probably the most fun he'd had in a really long time.
By the time they had hit all of the spots that Tony had promised they would appear in, Peter was actually tired. Not exhausted but comfortably worn out. So, when the man told him it was time to head back to shower and eat he was more than willing to go.
"That was really awesome, Mr. Stark. Like, I can't remember the last time I've ever been able to play with anyone like that.", Peter sighed out as they sat together at the kitchen counter eating dinner. After the spider bite, any and all rowdy antics had come to a rapid halt. It wasn't like he could wrestle around with Ned. He had super- strength and didn't want to hurt him. Yet, it had never crossed his mind that maybe Tony or even Steve would willingly rough-house with him. Sparring, jogging, team practice, those could be fun sometimes but they weren't the same thing.
"Yeah? Well, I'm glad you had a good time, Buddy.", Tony said. He'd not really considered that end of the exercise. His goal had been to allow the kid to wear himself out using his spider-powers without putting himself or others at risk. He'd had no idea that when he'd chosen to turn the whole thing it into a game, that he'd be filling a hole that he never knew existed. "I think the people watching had a good time too."
Nodding his head, Peter smiled. He thought about all the families that had come outside to see what the ruckus was about then stood on their balconies laughing and yelling, back and forth towards each other as they watched the action. He thought about how they were enjoying each other's company without going against any social distancing suggestions and how happy everyone looked while doing so. "It was sort of cool to see everyone being excited together even though they were still apart.", he mused between bites of spaghetti.
"We gave them something fun to focus on for a little while.", Tony acknowledged. He'd not expected the impromptu air show to go over quite as well as it had but then again people had been confined to their homes for a while at that point. No school, no concerts, even the libraries were off-limits. They'd needed a pick-me-up beyond a computer screen. An excuse to interact with their neighborhood at a distance.
"Can we do it again, Mr. Stark?", Peter asked as he began to clear the table. He wasn't sure exactly how much longer they would have to all be inside but he hoped to have the chance to lift the city's spirits again. That and the game had been fun. Laughing, goofing off and scuffling without having to worry about hurting anyone had been amazing.
"At some point.", Tony agreed with a smile. He could handle that and honestly, he had already decided that after everything had settled, that he would occasionally take the kid out just to play around as they had. Peter had made it very clear that having someone to horse around with had been something he'd been missing and it had been fun for him too. It would also come off as good publicity. Two superheroes working in tandem to brighten the lives of the people around them but mostly the former. "In the meantime, what do you want to do now? Lab or movie?"
"Movie.", Peter readily replied as he darted across the room and flipped solidly into the large chair beside the window. "They released some new ones to digital early since the movie theaters are closed. Like Onward, Frozen Two and most importantly, the newest Star Wars movie."
"Of course, Star Wars.", Tony replied with a roll of his eyes but settled down on the couch all the same.
They sat on the sperate pieces of furniture for the duration of the first movie but by the time they had started into their second, Peter was growing tired. Eventually, he got up from the chair he'd been curled up in and wandered over to sit directly beside Tony on the couch. That way he could stretch out a little more. Though as more time passed he found himself leaning more heavily into the man's side and his head resting snuggly on the man's shoulder.
Looking down at the kid who finally seemed to be more at peace than he had been for the last several days, he smiled. "You know we're supposed to be practicing social distancing.", teased said while nudging Peter's head with a shrug of his occupied shoulder. It wasn't that boy had never sat with him like that before or that he really minded, so much as he just wanted to give him a hard time. It was fun.
"I live with you.", Peter reason, without bothering to move an inch. He was comfortable and sitting closely beside someone that you were actively sharing space with was to be expected.
“You live with your aunt.", Tony counted with a chuckle. Though he did realize that the kid spent more than a good bit of time living with him as well. Even before the short term change in his primary residence.
Peter looked up and grinned. "Not right now I don't.", he sing-songed before pulling the blanket off of the back of the couch.
"Whatever.", Tony returned with a fond roll of his eyes. "At least your sitting down."

The Folktales of Supernatural
Here is the third and probably last post in my trilogy of the folkloristics, folklore, and folktales of Supernatural. You do not have to read the first and second posts necessarily, but it is a series, so…
Anyways, in Unhuman Nature, Ross-Leming and Buckner gave us a thumbnail of season three’s main arc-- Dean’s imminent hell deal-- in Jack’s perfectest day evaar. However, Dean got to do for Jack what no one was able to do for him when he was living under the shadow of his own death. Instead of taking a joy ride, going fishing (or to the beach, come ON show,) or fine okay spending some time with a girl with daddy issues (come ON buckleming,) Dean took care of business and showed Sam how to take care of the car. When Sam was also undergoing the Trials, they were again racing against the clock. Cas, too, was under the shadow of the Leviathan infestation, and there was very little carpe in the few diems he had left until the creatures destroyed him. There was always the understanding in Unhuman Nature that TFW would be doing everything possible to save Jack, but while Sam and Cas were best tasked with trying to find a cure, Dean knew that what would be the right thing for Jack was not being in the bunker dwelling on his imminent demise, and living is a particularly Dean thing.
It was a wonderful way of retelling this particular series legend, and using that series “motif” in a new way (anyone want to tackle a Supernatural Motif Index LOLOLOL) to do the “what happens when a story is retold” theme.
So, to tie up this trilogy of close readings, I want to talk a little about how the European version of Sleeping Beauty is a good way to understand what else is going on thematically with the trifecta of recursion-retelling-mirroring that’s been going on.
There are very few citations here as the evolution of Sleeping Beauty is more or less accepted as general knowledge now-- the concept is explored in Folk and Fairy Tales 2nd edition, edited by Martin Hallett and Barbara Karasek. It’s also on Wikipedia, if you’re into that.
CW for discussion of the non-est con to ever non-con and other unsettling themes that are nonetheless perfectly ordinary in folklore.
Sleeping Beauty was once considered to be perhaps one of the most wholesome of the Grimms’ fairy tales, but (in pop culture at least) the shine is starting to wear off. I was playing the Ellen edition of Outburst with some people I didn’t even know about a month ago and one of the “clues” was “Sleeping Beauty” and as soon as the guesser put that card up on her forehead, a guy shouts out, “That story is about sexual assault, fight me!”
Which makes this particular “folk tale” a neat way to show how folklore, or storytelling and retelling, is such a good frame for season 14.
I mentioned in the first post of this series that Sleeping Beauty is a great example of the intercycling of folklore and literature-- oral tales can become literary works, and vice versa, and they can comment on one another in surprising ways.
Let’s start with one of the most recent iterations of the Sleeping Beauty story and a move from one kind of text to another-- Disney’s 1959 animated movie, “Sleeping Beauty.” I know a lot of readers on here will know it-- and we’ll work our way down to the centuries-old bones of this tale.
Right off the bat, we get a really great (and subverted!) example of that “rule of three” 2/1 pattern I already talked about. The king and queen invite three “good fairies” to their daughter’s christening. They are even called “good fairies” by the herald as they enter on a sunbeam, so you already know there’s gonna be a bad one. The first fairy, Flora, gives Princess Aurora the gift of beauty. The next, Fauna, blesses the baby with the gift of song. Before fairy #3-- Merryweather-- can bestow her gift, Maleficent arrives, totally pissed that she hadn’t been invited but cool as a frozen cucumber, casually lies about her reason for showing up and then curses Aurora to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die on the evening of her 16th birthday. Merryweather uses her turn to alter Maleficent’s curse, as she does not have the power to nullify it: Aurora will fall into a deep sleep that only “true love’s kiss” can awaken her from. In hopes of protecting her from the curse in any way shape or form, King Stephan orders every spinning wheel in the kingdom to be burned, but the fairies say that this will not be enough so they sequester her in the woods under the alias Briar Rose, and they all live as peasants, eschewing magic and raising her in almost total isolation so that Maleficent can not find her to work the curse. Neat. Briar Rose gets into mischief anyway, gads about the forest singing like a klaxon, meets a prince named Phillip who is having Adventures in the Woods, falls In Love™ with him despite some now-creepy hand-grabbing. Later the fairies tell her not to worry about mysterious forest dudes and traumatize her by telling her that her entire life has been a lie, and then inexplicably send her home to the palace for her 16th birthday celebration despite the fact that the whole reason for hiding out was to keep Maleficent from being able to find her. Maleficent discovers that Aurora is at the palace, games the anti-spindle situation by luring Aurora up to a tower to a magical spinning wheel; Aurora pricks her finger on the spindle, and Bob’s your uncle. The good fairies put everyone in the castle into a deep sleep (so that while they are waiting for some weirdo to fall in True Love with a sleeping teenager, eugh, the people she knows (aka JUST MET) will sleep with her so that they won’t be upset by the complete failure of their plans) the fairies realize that Prince Phillip, the guy that Aurora has been betrothed to since she popped out of the womb, is one and the same as Mysterious Forest Dude that she fell in love with, and they send him to Aurora’s castle. Maleficent imprisons him, the fairies help him escape, he tears through a thorn bush that Maleficent creates as an impediment, kills the witch, and wakes Aurora with a chaste kiss. It’s fine, they met once, it was only a kiss (IT WAS ONLY A KISS), and this was 1959. So, that’s the Disney text in a nutshell. Folklorist Kay Stone says in her book Some Day Your Witch Will Come that while Disney had been called “a ‘Master of Fantasy’ in fact Disney removed most of the powerful fantasy of the Marchen and replaced it with false magic.” While her criticism of the Disnified Grimms tales is explicitly feminist, the criticism stands as Disney’s product is far divorced from the folk “originals.”
Most people are familiar with the Grimms’ written version of “Sleeping Beauty,” or “Little Briar Rose,” as they titled it when they published it in their first collection. This is the version that Disney partly modeled their story after. I won’t retell it, I’ll just discuss differences between the two versions, so please go read D. L. Ashliman’s translation here. It’s short. And. It turns out that the German “folk tale” that the Grimms brothers harvested is more than likely based on a story that was published by Charles Perrault in France which re-entered the Germanic oral tradition at some point. In this version, there are thirteen “wise women” (as opposed to fairies) in Briar Rose’s estimable father’s kingdom, but he only has twelve golden plates for them at the celebration of her birth, so he only actually invites twelve wise women (which is a hilarious commentary on what the lower classes thought of the nobility, am I right? Heaven forbid you don’t have enough fancy plates, quelle horreur or rather wie schrecklich or whatever the German equivalent would be.) Again, after eleven blessings, the evil crone who was disrespected barges in and curses the princess to prick her finger on a spindle (not the spindle of a spinning wheel, though) and die at fifteen; The next-eldest of the wise women modifies the curse and dad has all the spindles destroyed. Fifteen was apparently too young for a sexual awakening in 1959 but it was fine in 1812. Also, there were no shenanigans in the woods-- Briar Rose grows up a princess. She finds an old woman illicitly spinning in the castle one day and wants to try it, pricks herself with the spindle (the German version never specifies where) and her sleep is so profound that the entire castle falls asleep with her. A massive thorn hedge grows up because neglect, and eventually conceals the castle, and all that is left of the kingdom is a legend. Many other princes met agonizing deaths in that thorn hedge trying to get to Briar Rose but one day Her ACTUAL Prince shows up. The thorns turn to blossoms, he sails right through, kisses the girl, and as she wakes up so does the whole castle. The tale is over with an “and they lived happily ever after” ending.
Charles Perrault, the Frenchman who wrote the version of “La belle au bois dormant” or “The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods” that the Grimms’ informant possibly retold a hundred years later, has seven good fairies invited to the shindig, because everyone assumes that fairy number eight is dead or too ill to travel or senile or whatever. Here you can see that this isn’t an error made because a king was afraid of committing a faux pas and not from being afraid of the “bad” fairy, but because no one bothered to check on the old woman and find out what the reality was. You know what they say about what happens when you assume. So this time a young fairy steps forward and changes the curse, and instead of violently burning all the spinning wheels and spindles, the king merely outlaws their use. When the princess is sixteen or seventeen, (French nobles apparently had a little more childhood than German peasants,) she finds an old woman spinning in a tower who has remarkably never heard of the spinning ban. She hands over the spindle and the princess pricks her hand, and faints dead away. The king puts her on a bed of gold and I’m gonna quote Ashliman for this next part: “When the accident happened to the princess, the good fairy who had saved her life by condemning her to sleep a hundred years was in the kingdom of Mataquin, twelve thousand leagues away. She was instantly warned of it... [and] set off at once, and within an hour her chariot of fire, drawn by dragons, was seen approaching.” She puts everyone in the castle to sleep and this time the thorn hedge is actually a privacy fence that sprouts up under the good fairy’s magic. A hundred years later, some prince is having Adventures in the Woods when he sees the tops of the castle towers from a distance. One of his retinue tells him there’s a pretty girl inside, so he goes to check it out. Bruh, the brambles part for him magically, but allow only him, out of all of his party, to enter. He doesn’t awaken this princess with a kiss, but by the mere act of falling down beside her and being so genuinely and enormously in love with her that she wakes up on her own. Ol’ Charlie’s story is not over by half, though. They talk for hours, Perrault has a lot about eating and getting dressed and then they nap together a little, and finally get married. The prince’s mother is an ogre, however, and wants to eat her grandkids, Dawn and Day. Where does this come from? Why is it in here? What the actual heck? And it gets crazier from there. The prince becomes king and rides forth to wage war in a distant land, and the queen actually tells her steward that she wants to eat the little girl for her dinner. He tricks her by hiding Dawn and serving the queen a lamb instead. Next day, she wants to eat the little boy. He tricks her again by serving her a baby goat. Then, she wants to eat her daughter-in-law and they serve the evil queen venison. Then one day she hears the voices of her erstwhile entrees in the castle, discovers that she had been tricked, and prepares a cauldron full of venomous reptiles to throw the three innocents into to their deaths. The prince-turned-king shows up just in time and his mother is so beside herself with rage that she actually throws herself into the vat instead. So, yeah, weird stuff. Stuff that the Germans left out, or forgot, or decided that there was no “moral” that they wanted anything to do with. Was Perrault out of his damn mind?
WELL AS IT TURNS OUT, Perrault was actually retelling a Neapolitan folk tale that had been collected long before by a fellow named Giambattista Basile. He called the story “Sun, Moon, and Talia.” There is some evidence that it predates Basile, but most folklorists start there because the problem with oral tradition is that it’s rarely written down (ba-dump-tsss.) So we can definitively pick up the European version of Sleeping Beauty in Naples, Italy, in the early seventeenth century, when this mid-level clerk and author writes down a whole bunch of “nursery tales” and then dies. One of the stories he writes down is called “Sun, Moon, and Talia.” And I didn’t want to talk about it much before, except that I think understanding that Perrault seriously sanitized Basile’s story is the perfect illustration of “what happens when a story is retold.” In Basile’s story, to which I’m linking an okay version here with a content warning for rape and for the fact that they linked that painting “Nightmare” to the story, http://www.mftd.org/index.php?action=story&act=select&id=3364, Talia the princess is not cursed, but her father’s scholars tell her fortune and say to the king that she would “incur great danger from a splinter of flax.” He forbade flax (from which linen is made) from entering the castle. So in this version, it is the material, not necessarily the method of transforming it, that imperils the princess. Yes this is a giant metaphor for sexual intercourse and/or loss of innocence. Nonetheless, she comes across a woman who is spinning flax into thread, wants to try it, and gets a splinter under her nail. She falls down dead. The king is heartbroken, shutters the castle, and leaves her propped up on a throne. Some time later, another king comes across the castle, explores it, sees the dead Talia who seems to be weathering her death remarkably well, and has his way with her. I can only imagine what ran through Perrault’s head when he came across this. “Sacre bleu!!! Non, non ma petite chere, this will not do. A true king would never!” or something like that. ANYWAY, Basile’s story is still the frame on which Perrault based his literary fairy tale, for Talia gives birth to twins, a boy and a girl, Moon and Sun, one of which sucks the splinter out of her finger, and she awakens. The king finds her but keeps her a secret. The king’s wife (he has a wife!) sends for them, and then to get revenge on her husband she orders the children cooked and served to him one day, but again there is a switcheroo and the cook uses lambs instead, and later it all comes out and Talia marries the king and Basile’s moral (vastly different than that of Perrault) is “Those whom fortune favors find good luck even in their sleep.” I don’t know if that was written in “sarcasm gothic” or not.
The bones of all of the stories are the same, but in each iteration something has changed which makes a huge impact on the overall themes of each telling. First, Perrault drops the rape of Talia, and slides the villain role over to the prince’s mother and makes the rape-king a virtuous prince to erase the royal philandering and necrophilia, and there is no kiss at all. The Germans bring the kiss back, weirdly enough, to somehow reach back through Perrault’s chivalrication to the sexual component of Briar Rose’s awakening-- it might be the imagery of the spindle, which in some cases is a big rod typically dropped between a spinner’s knees to make the yarn or thread, or it could be the completely bonkers idea that just kneeling beside her bed would not be enough to break the kiss (but then again, why wouldn’t a test of virtue be enough? Indeed, in the Disney version, the three fairies arm Phillip with “the shield of virtue.”) In Basile’s version, Talia dead, not sleeping, and in the Disney version there is the totally weird seclusion until young adulthood (that weirdly enough hearkens to the Irish legend of Deirdre, a woman who was betrothed to the king of Ulster and was sequestered to both preserve her innocence and thwart a dire prophecy but who still managed to run off with another guy and cause an epic war) and they rename the princess Aurora, which is Latin for Dawn, which is the name of her daughter in the French version. It’s all very intermangled.
Did other stories with similarities come from a single stalk, an ur-story like the Great Hunt may have? D. L. Ashliman in Folk and Fairy Tales: A Handbook tells us that Grimm and other folklorists believe that these SB stories are the vestiges of myths (132) such as the story of Brunhilde, who was put to sleep with an enchanted thorn for reaping a warrior favored by Odin. Or does this particular metaphor just crop up in cultures everywhere through synchronicity? In the Japanese folktale The Matsuyama Mirror, a young girl is given a mirror by her father, who tells her that whenever she is sad she can look in the mirror and see her mother, and eventually the mirror’s symbolism thwarts her evil stepmother, much as in the story of Snow White. Is there an even older story that connects these two?
I chose these four versions of Sleeping Beauty because for one thing this story was mentioned in the text of The Scar, they are clearly family, and the American/European versions are the most familiar to me (and I assume at least the American audience of Supernatural) so it easy to demonstrate this “digging down” to get to the seed of a story-- in this case the sterilization of the Sleeping Beauty story is an excellent metaphor for a powerful trauma weathering and being repressed-- or healed-- over time. Many scholars have noted the sexual symbolism of the spindle, which if you’ve never seen one is a rod of varying lengths with a round weight at the bottom, and in hand-spinning, typically a spinner hangs the spidle between their legs and it can pump up and down as it spins. Even the later versions of the story that feature spinning wheels have a spindle on them, and it is an unmistakably phallic component of the rig, coupled with the pistoning action of the spinner’s foot on the treadle to spin the flywheel. So hm. However, not all spindles are sharp enough to possibly prick a hand or a finger, and in the original “Talia” it is the flax splinter that inserts itself into her flesh. At any rate, it’s a metaphor for sexual penetration retold for an audience that has increasingly moved further and further away from being able to see (or is unwilling to acknowledge) sexual subtext.
Jack’s perfect day was bittersweet, but was also unmistakably idyllic and idealized, almost Disnified, although the magic was still unmistakably powerful. The scene by the river, where Jack explicitly invokes the memory of John, should also illuminate scenes from the series’ past, such as Dean’s dream sequence where he was fishing off of a dock, or where rogue angel Daniel was fishing when he was found by Castiel and Hannah. Fishing is a motif, if you will; it’s been featured in the show before. Jack’s eventual death is one of the show’s tale types. Dean, Sam, and Cas have all been through it-- as Cas says in The Spear, it’s “something of a rite of passage.” But we’re being told this story again from a point of view that was almost tragically abbreviated the first time-- when John trades his soul for Dean’s in In My Time of Dying, we got very little of what it means for a parent to sacrifice themselves for a child. Likewise, the other times that TFW faced their dooms, they had (albeit under duress) volunteered themselves. Jack was an innocent. Dying is perhaps the ultimate loss of innocence-- it certainly was for Talia. So by stripping away the halcyon glow of the river scene, we get to the bones of where the “under threat of impending death” tale type originated in the series.
This whole season so far has been the most clever way possible to do a “retrospective.” It’s not a sign that a show is tired, but that it has reached a point of self-reflection that very very few shows ever get to.
I have to wonder if this way of painting season 14’s arc through a constellation of motifs-- through callbacks as hysterical as the Scooby lunchbox full of pressurized gas in Mint Condition to returning characters as poignant as Lilly Sunder’s appearance in Byzantium, to thematic parallels to past seasons-- is going to continue into the second half of the season. We will know quickly, as the stakes have been raised after Dean’s repossession, whether Dabb and his writers continue to use the motif index of the show, or if this retrospective period is over and we’ll be covering new thematic ground. I will say, this theme has been tied up pretty neatly with the mid-season finale, that while Castiel essentially stepped into the Jack’s Fractured Fairy Tale much the same way that the way the good fairy modifies the evil fairy’s curse in Sleeping Beauty, that choice could shift everything in his mythos over to “beat the devil” which is another favorite SPN story, Tale Type 210a or whatever (and is irl ATU 330: The Smith Outwits the Devil and hopefully would be 330C which is the kind of “Devil Went Down to Georgia” classic American and African-American story.) (Imagine the SPN Tale Type Index starting with “1-199 - Origin Stories - 1a Burning Wife, 1b Burning Girlfriend, 1c House Burns Down, 2 Demon Blood Fed to Infant” and etcetera… anyways.) And we know that Cas and Sam are going into Dean’s headspace to get him, so there’s the rescuing forces storming the sleeping castle trope (remember the “sleeping” patron in Rocky’s Bar?) getting resolved potentially. But I do believe that this focused close reading brings to light a “healing trauma” theme that the history of Sleeping Beauty makes explicit. It is not the only reading of the show to do that, but again, if I could describe Dabb’s era with one phrase it would be “There’s no such thing as too much meta.”
See y’all Thursday night!

HEY! LETS TALK ABOUT CABOODLE!
This probably comes off like im quitting but NO ITS NOT THAT AT ALL. i just wanted a news post to talk about some plans for caboodle since it will come back soonish :3 So. First off, while caboodles art style is cute and quick, i dont know if i want to continue with it or make it more detailed-more like my standard art style. Im kind of super conflicted on this-as well as making the pages full colour-but i suppose ill do a test of it to see if i like it and to see if you guys like it! The second order of business here is that i need to make money somehow-my town has like. no job options, and my current commission-based job isnt really good enough(especially with the very delayed months long wait on payments :\). So i think after caboodle is back and updating frequently for a while im going to open a patreon where you can pay a few bucks to get looks at previews, thumbnails, future chapter plans and caboodle pages! Im still working it out but im getting there. i would love to get caboodle updating twice a week consistently, so look forward to that :P either way thats all i have to say at the moment, caboodle has no set return date but lets hope it comes back soon <3 (thank you guys for putting up with my bullshit ;u;)

Nick Cannon backs Gabrielle Union in ‘AGT’ dispute
CLOSE
Nick Cannon, right, now hosts Fox’s “The Masked Singer,” which launches Season 3 Sunday after the Super Bowl, but the former “America’s Got Talent” host offered his thoughts on Gabrielle Union’s ouster from the NBC talent competitoin and Terry Crews’ comments in an interview posted this week. (Photo: Jack Zeman/Fox)
Nick Cannon isn’t blaming “America’s Got Talent” host Terry Crews for his comments in the aftermath of judge Gabrielle Union’s dismissal from the NBC talent competition, but he’s hardly backing him.
In an interview with VladTV posted Tuesday, the host of Fox’s “The Masked Singer,” which opens Season 3 Sunday after the Super Bowl, threw his wholehearted support behind Union and suggested Crews was being loyal to his employer.
Soon after news broke in November that Union and fellow judge Julianne Hough were being dropped after one season, Variety reported on a “toxic culture” at the show that included racist jokes and excessive focus on female judges’ appearances, including race-related comments. Union later reported speaking her “unfiltered truth” during a “productive” five-hour meeting with NBC, which is investigating the situation and promising changes, if necessary, according to NBC Entertainment chief Paul Telegdy.
Cannon, who left “AGT” in 2017 after seven seasons of hosting, backs Union without reservation.
The dismissal of ‘America’s Got Talent’ judge Gabrielle Union, seen here at the 2019 finale, has spurred an investigation into allegations of a toxic culture at the NBC talent competition. (Photo: Frazer Harrison, Getty Images)
“Gabby’s my girl. I’ve been standing firmly with her and support whatever she needs,” he said. “Whatever she said, if it happened, I’m rocking with you. Let’s go.”
Without detailing specific incidents, Cannon responded to a question about the culture at “AGT” by saying, “It was some eye-opening events that occurred that really just shed light on some cultural insensitvities, ultimately, when it comes to women, when it comes to how the show is produced.”
Different perspectives: Gabrielle Union tweets about being thrown ‘under the bus’ after Terry Crews defends ‘AGT’
During his time on the show, Cannon said he saw things “that are truly not fair” regarding how the contestants and judges are handled.
Crews, who succeeded Tyra Banks as host in 2019, said he hadn’t experienced the “toxic culture” described in the Variety story during an appearance on “Today” last week.
“I can’t speak for sexism because I’m not a woman, but I can speak on behalf of any racism comments. That was never my experience,” he said. “In fact, it was the most diverse place I have ever been in my 20 years of entertainment.”

He continued, “When you look at what the allegations were about, it was given by an unnamed source. My thing is – it’s funny because I believe you should listen to women, you should always believe women, so I asked my wife what I should do. She was like, ‘First of all, if it’s coming from an unnamed source – because Gabrielle Union has not made any statement about any of these allegations publicly – … If she hasn’t made a statement, why would you?’ ”
Critical response: Terry Crews says his wife is the only one ‘I have to please’ amid backlash over ‘AGT’ comments
Crews faced backlash after that appearance. Many think Union was referring to his comments in her response to a supporter the next day that talked about “those who enthusiastically will throw you under the bus.”
Cannon says problems at “AGT” are an “institutional issue” related to corporate entities Fremantle, which produces the show, and NBC.
“Fremantle (is) based out of the U.K. and a lot of their producers don’t understand the cultural sensitivities of American culture. And then … you have a network like NBC that’s only really worried about the dollar at the end of the day. All they want to see is that final product. They don’t care how you got to it,” he said. “So, when someone like Gabby, who is well educated, well-versed in speaking her mind, says, ‘Oh, this isn’t right, this shouldn’t be occurring,’ then people are like, ‘Now, she’s angry. Now, she’s a troublemaker.’ No. She’s pointing out things that are true issues that need to be fixed.”
He said he loves Crews and doesn’t blame him, but suggested the current host doesn’t want to speak ill of his employer.
“We get excited about the occupation. We get excited to work for the man and we’re going to defend the man because he gave me a job. And ‘I ain’t seen nothing’ becomes the thing. It don’t matter what you saw,” he said, adding that he supported Crews when he accused his then-agent, Adam Venit, of groping him.
“I stood firmly by him when my former agent accosted him and people thought it was funny. We all thought it was funny, because the situation was so hard to believe that sometimes it can appear to be humorous,” Cannon said. “But the idea was it didn’t matter if it was funny. We stood by you because you said this was an issue. We didn’t see Adam Venit grab your genitalia, but you said it happened so we rocked with you.”

Is Your Cat Losing Hair? 6 Reasons for Hair Loss in Cats

One of last year’s litters of foster kittens brought more than joy and heart-melting cuteness to my house. Unfortunately, the outdoor kitties and their mom came with a pack of fleas, and the pests took up residence in the fur of my resident cat, G.G., who had a maddening itch. The itch soon turned into thinning hair on her belly, at the base of her tail and on her hind legs. So, is your cat losing hair? What causes cat hair loss? In G.G.’s case the hair loss turned out to be caused by a flea allergy. Let’s learn more about hair loss in cats, also known as alopecia in cats.
First, let’s define cat hair loss
First, what exactly is hair loss in cats? Photography by Ramon Espelt Photography / Shutterstock.
A cat losing hair — also called alopecia in cats — can be complete or partial and happens in felines for a variety of reasons, the most common of which is skin allergies, experts say. Dr. Fiona Bateman, assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Georgia’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital, regularly sees hair loss in cats at her clinic.
Is alopecia in cats ever ‘normal’?
Some cats have hereditary alopecia. For example, Sphynx cats are born without hair and never grow any.
Another type of normal hair loss is pinnal alopecia – hair loss on the outside of the ear pinnae — which is common in Siamese cats but usually resolves on its own. Many adult cats also experience preauricular alopecia — thinning of fur on the skin strip between the ears and the eyes, which is considered normal in cats, Dr. Hayworth says.
What about acquired alopecia in cats?
The rest of the cat population, which is born with normal fur, gets acquired alopecia — which is a symptom of a disease or condition, and not a disease itself. The veterinarian will diagnose the underlying condition, Dr. Bateman says.
With a cat losing hair, will that hair grow back?
The good news for cat parents is that this hair loss in cats usually doesn’t indicate a serious illness, and the hair can usually grow back, Dr. Bateman says. Dr. Hayworth, of VCA Northview Animal Hospital in the Pittsburgh suburbs, explains that how well a cat losing hair can be treated and reversed depends on the underlying cause.
“Generally, if we can reverse the cause, then we can get the hair to grow back,” Dr. Hayworth says. “This is especially true with over-grooming related to allergies. So, if you notice hair loss in your cat, it is definitely worth a trip to the doctor.”
These are six of the most common conditions behind a cat losing hair. Note that this isn’t an exhaustive list, as alopecia in cats is a broad condition with many potential factors.
1. Allergies — Particularly to Fleas — and Itching and Over-grooming
An example of G.G.’s hair loss due to a flea allergy. Photography courtesy Kellie B. Gormly.
Fleas can bite and irritate any cat, but some cats have a hypersensitivity to antigens within the flea saliva. These allergic cats get miserably itchy if they encounter fleas — and many of them will over-groom as a way of scratching the itch. The hair doesn’t just fall out; the cats actually lick it so much that they pull their hair out.
“It’s not that the hair can’t grow,” Dr. Bateman says. “These cats are licking it out faster than it can be replaced.
“About 90 percent of those cats we see in our clinic are over-grooming,” she says. “It is much less likely that the hair is falling out and not regrowing.”
Sometimes, a cat may engage in compulsive grooming because of neuropathic pain from nerve damage in the skin. In rare cases, a cat may groom too much and lose hair for psychogenic reasons, like anxiety after a stressful event; but, it’s more likely that cats licking off their hair are itching from flea allergy, Dr. Bateman says.
Mange, scabies and lice also can make a cat’s skin itch — leading to the same over-grooming and a cat losing hair. Mites, food allergies and environmental allergies also can cause itching and over-grooming.
2. Pain
Sometimes, a cat will lick an area of his body too much not because it itches, but because the tissue underneath the skin hurts, Dr. Bateman says. A cat with arthritis, for instance, may lick at the achy joint constantly because it is painful, and licking helps relieve the discomfort. The problem is, the cat licks away the hair, too.
Dr. Bateman once saw a cat who had a fractured rib. The kitty licked at the painful rub so much that he had become bald around that bone.
3. Infections
This isn’t as common a cause of a cat losing hair as allergies are, but it does happen. Cats with infectious conditions like staph infections and fungal infections like ringworm may lose hair in the affected areas, Dr. Hayworth and Dr. Bateman say.
4. Endocrine Disorders
A cat losing hair may have hyperthyroidism — an overactive thyroid, which causes weight loss and other symptoms. Outside of the thyroid, if cats have a hormonal imbalance and an increased level of steroids in the body, the hair follicles may die; and with abnormal hormone levels, new hair may not grow back. For instance, Cushing’s disease, a metabolic disorder that produces too much cortisol, may cause alopecia in cats.
5. Medication Side Effects
Transdermal prednisone causes alopecia and curling of the ear pinnae. Usually, Dr. Hayworth says, stopping the medication will reverse this condition.
6. Cancer
Thankfully, cancer is a rarely the reason for a cat losing hair; it is far more likely that your kitty’s hair loss is nothing serious. But neoplasia — a term for abnormal growths caused by uncontrolled division of cells — may cause hair loss in cats. Another serious condition that occurs secondary to cancer is paraneoplastic alopecia, which is hair loss associated with itching and moist skin, Dr. Hayworth says. However, these serious causes are rare.
The bottom line on hair loss in cats and alopecia in cats
Don’t panic over a cat losing hair — just take your cat to the veterinarian for an exam. “Chances are, it is not serious,” Dr. Bateman says. “But you don’t know that just by looking at the cat, which is why it’s important to get it checked out.”

Aftermath (wip)
//This is gonna be a long one (because im like halfway through writing it i think? If even that?), and i was gonna hold off and keep it as a total surprise, but my brain literally wont shut off unless i share every last fucking writing apparently, so take this as it is, and ill post the completed and edited one later today probably, with a real summary :P
TWs: character death, grieving, mourning, suicidal thoughts, mentions of Lucky and Cam (disappearing), survivor’s guilt, general guilt. So much guilt.
Renee couldn't handle sleeping in the same room Sam had been in not 4 days ago. She had spent a lot of time with Eli and Sofia and Kat, trying to ignore the emptiness in her head. Sam was the more dominant of the two of them, and now with her gone, Ren didnt know what to do with herself; for being the more confident of the two, she didnt have the will to do much of anything.
By the fourth day though, she figured she couldnt sit and cry on Sofia's couch, finally dragging her ass back to her own cabin. She slowly looked around, remembering every blanket fort and hug that Sam had made and shared, every movie they had watched, and every bowl of popcorn she had eaten. The room felt.. empty now. Grey and dull and lifeless. Or maybe it was Ren feeling that way..? She couldn't tell the difference anymore.
She slowly idled around the room, eventually ending up in her room. She picked up Sam's teddy bear, her favorite that had gotten her through so many bad days. Ren hugged it tight, feeling almost as if she was hugging Sam. She found herself crying again, her knees giving out as a sob broke through her pursed lips. She clutched the bear -- Peter? -- to her chest, biting his ear to muffle herself.
--
She didnt know when exactly she had fallen asleep, but Ren found herself opening her eyes groggily, pushing herself up from the floor. As she stood, she saw the bag Sam had brought with them originally sitting next to the wardrobe, almost completely empty, save a sketchbook and a small fox plushie with a ribbon and a handmade tag that read "Auburn". Reading Sam's handwriting caused her to tear up further, so she set aside the small fox and grabbed the sketchbook.
She flipped through, seeing so many sketches, through various states of completion, the last two causing her breath to catch. On the left of the page was a half finished sketch of Sam holding her hand up to a mirror, her reflection clearly being Renee, smiling back so happily. She lifted a hand to her mouth, trying to hold back a dry sob, lowering her fingertips to the page after a moment. The right page was a half finished Renee in a dress, holding a blue rose, with a roughly-sketched Genesis in a beautiful black dress, almost holding Ren's hand. Across the top in Sam's best cursive was the phrase "For Good."
Ren found herself tearing up once again, the song immediately playing in her head. She couldnt remember all of the words, but the parts she could hear were distinctly in Sam's voice, "So now its up to you, for both of us.. i know im who i am today, because i knew you.. i do believe i have been changed for the better, and because i knew you, i have been changed for good..." Ren sobbed as the words repeated and replayed, what she thought Gen sounding like filling in some of the other half, "just to clear the air, i ask forgiveness, for the things ive done you blame me for.. whatever way our stories end, i know you have rewritten mine, by being my friend..."
She couldn’t hold back the tears, quickly setting the book aside so she didnt fuck with the pages further, bringing her hands up to her face so she didnt have to see anything but the darkness.
--
Finally, Ren had packed up her bag fully. She didnt know where she was going, but she knew she couldnt stay in the cabin anymore; there were so many memories everywhere here, and she couldnt stop replaying all of them. She left Auburn and Peter on the bed, with a short note saying that Eli and Jackie could have them respectively, before leaving out the front door. She considered just walking off the property until she collapsed somewhere, but decided that was a horrible train of thought that she didnt wanna follow, so instead she headed towards the road, caught between borrowing someone else's car and calling a ride.
She glanced up at the main house, briefly remembering the conversation about getting an apartment that Sam--.. that she was supposed to have with Ceph. She debated that too; it wasnt that she didnt want help, it was more that she didnt know if she could face an entire house of memories and people that might try to comfort or stop her, and she hadnt actually mentioned leaving to anyone. The fact that she left without Kat noticing was a miracle, and she couldnt handle explaining herself to anybody -- not when she was still explaining to herself.
"Renren..?" A quiet voice called behind her, causing Ren to tense up. She wanted to pretend she didnt hear him, wished she had made up her mind, wished she could disappear without hurting anybody, but.. She turned around to face Eli, not actually meeting his eyes. She doesnt speak, she hadnt since--..
Eli stepped closer, his hand coming into Ren's view. He reaches for her hand, her shoulder, before pulling away entirely. She wanted to hug him, but couldnt bring herself to move. She should explain, but she still didnt know why she was even gonna leave, and now he was going to blame himself no matter which she picks, and-
"Ren? Eli?" Another voice comes from the direction of the house, louder and more concerned than Eli's had been. Ren notices Eli turn to Jinx, sees Jinx's feet enter her field of view, can practically feel his worry rolling off of him. He had so much worry for someone so young.. "You two okay-?" Jinx sounded almost like he wanted to say more, but decided against it.
Ren nodded to his question, glancing down at the bag that was still clutched in her too-tight grip. This was a mistake. She shouldnt-- she couldnt leave all of this behind. This was.. well, she was happy here. Everyone she cared about was here, well.. almost everyone..
She lifts a shaky hand to run through her hair, habitually sticking her thumbnail in her mouth and gnawing at it afterwards.
"'m fine, but Renren..." Eli trailed off, and Ren felt a pang hit her chest; the first emotion to break her numbness, and it was guilt, how fitting.. These two shouldnt have to walk on eggshells, its not like she was a ticking time bomb..
But as she looked down at her white knuckles, as she chewed her nail down to the pink, as she remembered the voice telling her to join Sam and Cam and Lucky, she wasnt so sure of that anymore.
"Renren, stop," Eli pulled her hand from her mouth, and only then did she notice she had bitten down hard enough to draw blood. Her eyes followed Eli's hand back up to his face, tracing over every worried and distressed and upset mark, and she wished for nothing more than to hold him until they all faded.
Logically, she knew it wouldnt work like that, but she couldnt help but drop her bag and pull him into a hug anyway. It was the first one she had initiated and the first she had reciprocated, and that realization made her heart pang again. Eli was suffering and mourning just as much, and now it was like he lost both sisters.. She squeezed him a little, resting a hand on the back of his head.
Eli hugged her back quickly, his arms around her waist. She could feel the fabric of her shirt becoming damp near his face, but she didnt mind. It was just a shirt, and he was so much more important. She gently brushed through his hair with one hand, the other releasing him and holding a welcoming hand out to Jinx.
He stepped closer, his body tense, but he joined the hug anyway, one hand resting on Eli's shoulder and the other on Ren's back. She rested her hand on his back, just below his shoulder so he could easily duck out when he got uncomfortable.
Her legs were shaking by the time they all finally parted, Eli softly sniffling and Jinx looking a little awkward. Ren rubbed her arm, her hand feeling oddly empty without the bag, her arms feeling oddly empty without them, but her heart feeling a little more full. She pointed up to the house, waiting for both boys to acknowledge the gesture before she picked up her bag and stepped forward, wanting one of them to lead the way. In truth, she didnt want to be alone, and didnt know how to confidently lead anymore, even if it was just inside a big fucking house. She didnt know how to hold herself anymore, and her legs felt like weak cement, both too unstable but too heavy to move.
Eli grabbed Ren's hand, wrapping it round his shoulders, Jinx coming around to take her bag, and the three slowly made their way inside. They were so patient and understanding, and they were so strong.. they shouldnt have to be strong, and another guilty pang flashed through Ren's chest.

// Fin for now <3 Is gonna get worse before it gets better i think, so im sorry in advance? I promise im gonna write fluff soon, i need it so badly and these two assholes arent gonna stop me from giving them fluff, no matter how hard they’re apparently trying??

All dogs communicate. They bark, they howl, they cry and sometimes, they whimper. If you’ve ever wondered what dog whimpering means and why pups do it, read on.
First off — is dog whimpering always negative?

“Dogs can whimper or whine for many reasons, and while whining can be a normal behavior for some dogs when they’re excited or want something, it can also be a sign of an underlying health issue,” says Dr. David Dilmore, DVM, of Banfield Pet Hospital.
According to Dr. Dilmore, dog whimpering communicates something — but that something isn’t always negative. A dog whimpering could indicate that she wants something, like a treat, a toy or that cheese stick you’re eating. Or a dog may whimper if he’s excited to go for a walk.
Therefore, dog whimpering doesn’t automatically denote something bad.
So, why do dogs whimper? It all comes down to context.
As mentioned above, dog whimpering occurs for a multitude of reasons. They key to differentiating these different causes for dog whimpering is context.
“Your dog could be whining for many reasons,” says Dr. Dilmore. “You may need to investigate and see if it’s being caused by any of these factors.”
Being uncomfortable or in pain
Illness
Feeling anxious
Needing something / excitement
In these situations, context is everything. Is your dog whimpering in conjunction with vomiting or experiencing diarrhea? Your dog might be sick. Is your dog whimpering and limping? She might be uncomfortable or in pain. Or, is your dog whimpering in the car? Sounds like he’s anxious and carsick. If your dog is whimpering while you eat at the dinner table, that might be because she “needs” — a.k.a. wants — what you’re eating, and if she whimpers when someone new walks into the house, then the whimpering might be due to excitement. It’s all about surveying the situation.
“If you notice any changes with your dog’s vocalization behavior or if you’re concerned about her health, you should take her in to see a veterinarian,” says Dr. Dilmore.
A closer look at four reasons for dog whimpering

As Dr. Dilmore mentions, dog whimpering could mean a lot of different things depending on the situation. Below, Dr. Dilmore explains four common scenarios that cause dog whimpering and what each of them means.
1. Being uncomfortable or in pain:
Sometimes an injury or another kind of underlying health issue can cause dog whimpering.
“If your dog is uncomfortable, this can be caused by things like joint issues, pain in the belly from an illness, spinal pain or an injury,” Dr. Dilmore explains. “If you feel that your pet is uncomfortable or in pain, you should contact your veterinarian and schedule an appointment as soon as possible as they can help determine the cause of the whimpering.”
2. Illness:
Sickness — such as vomiting or experiencing diarrhea — could also be the cause of that dog whimpering.
“If you notice other symptoms in your dog like not wanting to eat, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing or lethargy, she may be whining because she’s sick. If this is the case, it’s time to visit your veterinarian so they can help determine the cause of their whimpering,” Dr. Dilmore says.
3. Feeling anxious:
Anxiety isn’t just a human thing; it affects our pets, too. Some reasons that dogs might experience anxiety include traveling in the car or by airplane, thunderstorms, fireworks, a change in environment or being left alone a lot — also known as separation anxiety.
“There can be many different types of anxiety in dogs that could cause whimpering, including separation anxiety or noise phobia,” Dr. Dilmore explains. “In some cases, changes in the home environment can also cause stress-related anxiety that may manifest itself in the form of whining or whimpering, whether it’s moving to a new home, a change in your work schedule, a new child or pet sibling or hosting out-of-town-guests. In some cases, your dog may need some time to adjust, but if you have any concerns or if this behavior persists, you should schedule a visit with your veterinarian to rule out any underlying health issues,” he adds.
4. Needing something or excitement:
This is likely one of the most common causes of whimpering in dogs. Like babies, dogs will sometimes cry or whine to get attention or to acquire what they want, whether it’s a ball, toy, treat, food or water. Or just maybe, a whimpering dog might need to go out for a walk.
“Your dog may start whining if he’s looking for you to give him something, from attention and a belly rub to play time or food,” Dr. Dilmore says. “Some dogs will also whine or whimper when they are excited. This can happen when they see you pick up their leash or someone new comes to visit. While whining can be a normal behavior for some dogs, it can also potentially be a sign of an underlying health issue. If you notice any changes with your dog’s vocalization behavior, or if you’re concerned about her health, you should take her in to see a veterinarian.”
When is dog whimpering a cause for concern?
As you can see, sometimes, dog whimpering is just a way for our furry friends to communicate with us or with one another. But in other cases, dog whimpering is a cause for concern and requires a vet visit.
Dr. Dilmore concludes, “If you think your dog might be whining because he’s uncomfortable, sick or anxious, you should contact your veterinarian.”

Dilmore.
