Christan symbolism in Hxh p1
Chrollo & Jesus
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Christ by Heinrich Hoffmen
Chrollo is somewhat straightforward. He has a cross on his forehead, he reads a book of mystical origin and experience rapturous emotions while doing so. He has 12 followers to mirror the apostles of jesus.
He has suffered greatly at the hands of those in power, and came from the lowliest of origins. He associates with thieves and prostitutes, and performs feats deemed miraculous.
Hisoka & Judas
Tumblr media
Judas by Ilia Efimovich Repin
Tumblr media
These two are compared by name; after the mob predicts something going wrong at the auction, Uvo asks if they have a Judas in the ranks. Chrollo denies this, but he's kind of wrong; there is a traitor in the group, but he is correct about the traitor not causing that.
Additionally, he is one of Chrollo's disciples, at least in appearance. Judas betrays Jesus by identifying him to roman solders with a kiss, and some interpretations of this are that he's gay. Hisoka's sexual identity is constantly on display when interacting with chrollo.

The Reader (1901). Ilia Efimovich Repin (Russian, 1844-1930). Drawing. The State Russian Museum.
In 1874-1876 Repin contributed to the Salon in Paris and to the exhibitions of the Itinerants' Society in Saint Petersburg. While in France he became familiar with the impressionists and the debate over a new direction in art. Though he admired some impressionist techniques, especially their depictions of light and color, he felt their work lacked moral or social purpose, key factors in his own art.
