Harrowhark Nonagesimus and Gideon Nav have always been at each other’s throats, and the animosity has only intensified since the death of Harrow’s parents. But when a car accident leaves Gideon without any memories of her past, Harrow sees a chance at the clean slate she’s wanted for years. Becoming involved in Gideon’s recovery assuages some of the guilt, but as she and Gideon become closer and increasingly involved in each other's lives, Harrow worries that some of her secrets may be more than she can atone for.

I'm nearly a month late to the anniversary but it's somehow been over a year since I published putting your fist through a thick sheet of glass (i know you don't want to) and I'm just feeling very emotional about it tonight to be honest. It's genuinely the most fun I've ever had working on a piece of writing and I miss it every single day. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've cried multiple time over the sweet comments folks have left. It's truly been the best fandom experience of my life and I'm so grateful that I got to share it with all the amazing people on here.

Hey! I was reading “putting your fist through a thick sheet of glass (i know you don't want to)” again. I really love it. I was just sort of wondering how our AU Gideon and Harrow are doing?

Oh gosh, I'm so happy to hear you've enjoyed it, and grateful you've taken the time to let me know 💛 Hearing that it's a fic that people have gone back to actually makes me really emotional 🥹 Last week actually marks exactly one year from when I first started drafting - I wrote the scene where Harrow drives Gideon to OT and they bicker about "none pizza" in the car in my notes app on a flight. A whole year! Absolutely bonkers to think about.

That's an excellent question you've got there. I think someday you might get an answer to that [whistling innocently].

Joke's aside, I do have a follow-up piece that I've been casually tinkering with for a while. It's still in the very very early stages, so I genuinely could not begin to guess at a timeline. By "very very early stages" I mean like, I have an outline made and half of two different scenes written, maybe 1k total? I do have a playlist, a moodboard for one of the plotlines, and a very sparse inspo tag though, and as we all know, those are the things that really matter, right?

Not to be a tease (again, I have no ETA whatsoever for this) but I will drop a little screenshot tidbit from the conversation I had with @theriverbeyond (who was also my enormously supportive beta reader for ikydwt) when I first blurted out the general idea:

The phrase "bubblegum pop angst" was also uttered during that conversation, for what it's worth 😏

Playlist Countdown to the Title

My Big Resurrection Event fic isn't dropping until July 26th, so in the meantime I thought it'd be fun to do a little countdown! I've said it before, but I feel like this event is our fandom's Cannes, so I think we should make our own red carpets. Life is too short (and love is too long) to not hype your own creations :)

Given that the title of my fic is pulled from the lyrics of the first track on my playlist for it (all lowercase, with parenthesis, naturally), I decided to pull some of my other favorite lyrics from the playlist to post throughout the day.

Oh gosh, thank you so much 🥹 It makes me so emotional (happy!) to know that other people have connected with that story the same way I have. It's been over a year since I published that fic, and it's still the movie I watch in my head as I fall asleep - absolutely surreal to know that other people have not only experienced and enjoyed it, but now it's their comfort fic as well. Oooo for the director's commentary ask!! ⭐️ any sections of ikydwt you have been dying to talk about?

Not a section per se, but I want to talk about Harrow being a medical illustrator in this fic!!!!

It was one of the first things I thought of when I was trying to decide what to have her be studying - I kept trying to think of other options and I just kept coming back to that. I felt that whatever I landed on needed to be very academic/intellectual and a rather niche, but also allow for the level of artistry that we see in her necromancy. While we give a lot of focus to Harrow’s dedication to her studies and her degree of specialization, I think we overlook the creativity in how she deploys necromancy, the beauty she finds in it, and I wanted to incorporate that aspect as well. Medical illustration fit the bill.

From a logistical standpoint, it also worked really well. We often see her in some sort of medical field in AUs, but if she were a medical student in this one, it would largely preclude the amount of time I needed her to spend with Gideon for this scenario. Also, slight tangent but I have to say it: I totally get the rationale when people have her as in orthopedics, because, obviously, bones, but it’s also really funny to me that the stereotype is that orthopedic surgeons are the jocks and gym bros of the medical field. Based on that, Gideon would be the one in ortho; Harrow would be much more likely to end up in endocrinology or rheumatology (who have reputations as being the nerds and Sherlock Holmes, respectively).

Aside from that, it gave me something to have her doing in a lot of scenes where she would otherwise just sort of be sitting around (or just sitting around talking with someone). If she’s got her sketchbook with her, I now have something for her to be doing and can break up otherwise long chunks of dialogue or whatever by taking a moment to focus on her drawings. Plus, it gives her an excuse to look at Gideon, and study her, and think about how gorgeous she is, etc 😏

The scene in ur BRE fic where Harrow is kissing crying Gideon on the couch sticks with me in particular I love it a good deal

ack thank you so much!!!! ! i really love that scene too, especially given that it was rather difficult to write, though not for like, the normal reasons lol. some of the reasons include

writing Gideon crying made ME cry so I had to stop in the middle and come back to it the next day

in my head, Pyrrha's house is basically just my house (with a few differences) and i was sitting in "Gideon's spot" on the couch while writing it BUT! i was writing from Harrow's POV. so i kept getting mixed up as to where everyone was physically AT due to my conflicting physical and imaginary spatial orientation lol

i hadn't written any romantic scenes before, so i was fighting my self-consciousness soooo badly the entire time. i just felt so like. idk, bashful? my face was bright red the whole time i was working on it. shout out to @theriverbeyond for putting up with me being so awkward and embarrassed when i sent it over for beta reading and very kindly reassuring me that it was fine 🙈 obviously i got over it eventually but i did very much feel like i was gonna be sick the first time i knew someone was reading it lol

i feel like me and that scene really bonded after going through that together lmao

It took me a second to recognize the acronym lmao. Can't even recognize my own fic because I gave it such a stupidly long title 💀

It turns out that I’m not answering any of these with “sections” lololol. But! One of the things I had so much fun with while writing this was finding places to work in references - both to the actual books as well as to other media and memes! Some of them are pretty minor to the point that I’m not sure they really count as a “reference” exactly, but I certainly put them in there while thinking of a specific source! 

With regard to the books themselves, I often used particular wording with the intention of it being from the books, even if it wasn’t at all in the context of how they were originally used. Off the top of my head, in the first chapter there’s things like “...trying to take advantage of the opportunity while I had your full attention” (“I died knowing you’d hate me for dying; but Nonagesimus, you hating me always meant more than anyone else in this hot and stupid universe loving me. At least I’d had your full attention.”) and “...absolutely unprepared to have this conversation and fundamentally unequipped to manage the implications it conveyed” (“She absolutely and fundamentally could not do this.”) etc.

I did try to keep a running log of references to other things as I was writing… I think I got all of them? Again, some of these are very minor (and some of them are direct shoutouts), but if anyone ever wants to play Reference Bingo, here’s your card:

Pyrrha had gotten done at work earlier than usual and made it here in time for the end of one of your speech therapy sessions. When your therapist asked you to tell her who had just gotten here, it wasn’t necessarily a surprise that you gave an answer. But it was a surprise that your answer was, “Mom.” I have never seen Pyrrha freeze like that. She had just set down her bag and was pulling off her jacket when you stopped her in her tracks. It had slipped halfway down her arms before she got her wits about her to respond. “Yeah,” she said, “It’s good to see you, kiddo.” Her voice was casual as she leaned down to press a kiss to the top of your head, but when she turned to hang her coat up, she was blinking hard. Even when we were kids, it was always just “Pyrrha.” She didn’t even like us calling her Ms. Dve, back when she would chaperone our elementary school field trips. She’d wrinkle her nose and tell us to “save it for the adults who actually deserve some respect.” I avoided calling her anything, a compromise between the obedience and deference towards adults that had been drilled into me by my parents. I’ve never heard you call her anything but Pyrrha, and certainly never “Mom.” Until today.

Again, this isn’t exactly a “section” but for putting your fist through a thick sheet of glass (i know you don’t want to), I had originally imagined it being much more, like, multimedia? I guess? I scrapped that pretty quick - I still think it’s a super cool concept, but it would have been so much work lol. I had thought about how cool it would be to include like, mock ups of actual medical documents, things like lab results, her physical therapy program, treatment goals, progress charts, etc to sprinkle throughout, and different ways of using images and typesetting to make them look realistic. Harrow’s letters in the second and third chapters would have been done similarly.

I think it would be AMAZING as a physical document, like if it were an actual hard copy that I could staple in paperwork and add little sketches in the margins as if it was Harrow’s actual notebook but 1) that’s not the format I was writing for and 2) the amount of work that would go into that is far more than I am able (or willing) to put into it lol. It’s a fun thought experiment though!
