Thinking about DR1 chapter 1 again.

DR doesn't always have the best track record with women but god does it still do a lot well, especially in the first game. In the first chapter, where we still don't know what to expect in terms of character depth, I feel like Kodaka really takes advantage of that by having Maizono and Ikusaba seemingly play into misogynistic archetypes only to completely subvert them later.

Like, ah yes, here's the female deuteragonist that's starting to emotionally rely on the male protagonist despite seeming much more capable and self-driven than him*. Welp, there she goes being fridged for his manpain or something- hang on, she did what now? She was manipulating him to frame him and her dying message was partly made out of guilt?? Holy shit, where did her act end and her genuine desperation and fear begin??? Did she even know herself?????

And ah yes, an airheaded model character. There she goes doing something stupid and being killed for it; shame there wasn't more to h-FUCKING HELLO?????

They're some of the shortest-lived characters in the series but still have so much nuance to them, just like every other character in DR, if you put even a little effort into looking below the surface. And both of them feel designed to call out the player in targeted ways for reducing people to stereotypes.

*Not my actual opinion of their dynamic either to be clear! The entire series is about dissecting people more deeply than that, separating talent and various types of mental strength and humanising everyone equally. Naegi's the protagonist and Maizono snaps and dies first for a reason.

“why don't you just trust me, mukuro?”

your girlfriend wasn't usually like this. sure, she always kept an eye out for any danger, but this wasn't like that. mukuro was starting to suspect people close to her. and she seemingly started to suspect you too.

“it's not you i don't trust!”

mukuro sighed and grabbed your hands, gently holding them as she looked at you pleadingly. she didn't want to argue and she didn't want to accuse you of anything. no, you weren't the one she didn't trust.

“it's junko that i don't trust…”

you pulled your hands away from mukuro as she said her name. junko enoshima, mukuro's older sister.

“mukuro, what are you saying…?”

“i'm saying that junko has an ulterior motive to get close to you. she never bothered to befriend you, but now she's suddenly so interested in you. whether she wants to steal you from me or… something else. i can't let that happen!”

junko was always much more cunning than people gave her credit for. there had always been this intimidating aura around her. but if even mukuro couldn't trust her own sister, perhaps there was more to it.

“mukuro… i'd never let anyone steal me away from you. besides, as long as you're by my side, i know i'm safe. whether you'll protect me from junko or anyone else…!”

Junko Enoshima Headcanons despite hating her

-she constantly goes through multiple phases multiple times a month and then completely drops and forgets about them

-if she were invited to a wedding, she'd wear white (with a crown if shes petty enough)

-Junko knows multiple languages

-Her fashion was probably based off those girly flash games from when she was younger

-Junko is probably very good at thumb war

-She probably doesn't like/understand neopronouns and disrespects them :/

-She has burned some of Ikusaba's clothing if she thinks it looks ugly in her eyes

-Both Ikusaba and Junko are very picky about food

quickly, the two of you became rivals, always trying to one-up each other, which wasn't very hard, as your skill sets overlapped so much!

slowly, your rivalry turned into a friendship, which then turned into a relationship

while your ultimate talent wasn't the same, it was similar enough that you could always train together and even take on jobs together!

yet despite always being together, mukuro and you never got sick of each other! if anything, working closely together like this only made your bond stronger!
