Fenrir was always the first to notice whenever something was wrong with Ray.

When there was something on his mind, he had this habit of staring off into space with his brows furrowed, although he would continue to hum along in acknowledgement if someone was talking to him. Every so often he would suddenly blink and make eye contact again, and that’s how you’d know he had come back down to earth for a second. But as long as there was something bothering him, he would drift in and out like that, ruminating in his thoughts, until he managed to sort things out.

Considering he still hadn’t snapped out of his trance even once in the forty minutes this meeting had been going on, Fenrir was starting to worry.

Whatever Ray was thinking about, it must’ve been serious if not even Seth’s melodramatic shouting or the tantalizing smell of Luka’s scones could get a reaction out of him. What’s worse, Fenrir had no idea what could be troubling him. Realizing there was something wrong was only half the battle. It was his duty as Ray’s best buddy to help him handle it, too—if only he knew what it was.

As Sirius wrapped up his report about the day’s training session, Fenrir realized suddenly that he was tapping his foot anxiously. 

“Hey, did any of the new recruits stick out to you, Ray?” Bringing his usual bright smile to his face as the attention turned to him, Fenrir consciously kept his voice light and breezy as he continued, “I’m always lookin’ for new manpower for my squad, you know.”

His only response was a halfhearted hum from the man in question. Evidently, Ray was listening just closely enough to have recognized that someone said his name, but not that he’d been asked a question.

“Ray?” Sirius raised his eyebrows at the King of Spades after an awkward beat of silence. “You’ve been awfully quiet today, come to think of it.”

“Is everything okay?” Luka now, softly. 

When all three of them failed to get his attention, Seth gasped suddenly, as if struck by a realization. “Oh, don’t tell me!”

“What’s the matter?”

“Don’t you know, Fenrir? There’s only one reason why a man could be so totally lost in dreamland! Ray, you don’t mean—it couldn’t be—”

“Hello?”

At the sound of a new, fifth voice, everyone stopped in their tracks and turned to face the door, where you were now standing. Your hand was raised to the door tentatively, as though you’d tried to knock but had received no answer. Glancing around the room bewilderedly as the Black Army officers stared at you with wide eyes, you began to backtrack, unsure of what you’d just walked in on.

“Sorry! I didn’t mean to interrupt, I’ll come back later and—”

“Not at all.”

As a sixth voice joined the conversation, the group swiveled back around to face Ray’s desk. To everyone’s astonishment, Ray seemed to be fully focused suddenly, smiling at you softly. “You’re not interrupting. Come in.”

With your arrival, the air in the room seemed to thicken somehow, full of unspoken meaning. You met his smile with a grateful one of your own and he nodded in response, signaling for you to enter. At this silent exchange, a knowing look passed between Sirius and Seth—which didn’t escape Luka’s notice, but only seemed to confuse him further—and suddenly all of the pieces fell into place.

Fenrir had witnessed some of Ray’s rare displays of vulnerable emotion before, but never one like this. If he knew what Seth was implying, then that would mean...

Without even realizing, he stopped tapping his foot, his body slowly going numb instead.

He couldn’t remember what exactly you were there to tell them. After being struck by that realization, Fenrir couldn’t focus on the conversation anymore, absently glancing back and forth between you and Ray as if trying to prove to himself that this was really what it looked like. The way Ray seemed to become himself again the second you walked in... The way his posture relaxed and he leaned forward in his seat... The gentle twinkle in his eyes as he listened to you speak, as though cherishing every word... 

Seth was right. There was only one explanation.

“Fenrir, do you think Ray likes me?”

A few days had already passed since that meeting, but even though the memory of it had been lingering in his mind ever since, it still caught him off guard when you suddenly blurted out that question at dinner one evening. So off guard, in fact, that his plate nearly slipped out of his hand.

“Huh?”

He couldn’t kept the shock out of his voice as his head snapped in your direction. Though you were standing beside him, you were gazing across the room at Ray, who was currently helping himself to a second portion of Luka’s stew despite receiving a light scolding from Sirius. 

“I mean...” Your face reddening as Fenrir stared at you with wide eyes, you tried to explain, “You know him better than anyone, right? So I assumed, if anything has changed about... the way he feels about me... well, he'd tell you first.”

Fenrir opened his mouth to respond, but stopped himself before he could say anything. The worry—insecurity—radiating off of you made him think better of it. A dull ache arose in his heart as he watched you fiddle with the ends of your hair, anticipating his response. He couldn’t find it in himself to tell you the truth.

No, he hasn’t told me anything.

Sneaking a quick glance at Ray, who seemed not to notice the two of you watching him, Fenrir was secretly glad that those words died on his tongue, so he wouldn’t have to admit it out loud.

To be honest, he hated that Ray was leaving him in the dark about all this, just as much as he hated knowing that you were doubting yourself because of Ray’s silence, too. He couldn’t speak for him, but he knew what he saw, at least. Maybe that was still enough for him to be able to help you.

“Well, do you like Ray?”

You jumped, as though you’d forgotten he would figure that out from your question. Before you even had to worry about stuttering out a response, however, Fenrir flashed you a wry grin.

“I see.”

“Fenrir—”

“Nah, don’t worry, I won’t make you say it.” Turning his gaze back onto Ray, he let out a short sigh. “There’s one thing I can tell you for sure. You remember that meeting the other day?”

You nodded.

“He was acting weird until you walked in. Then it was like all the clouds hanging over him disappeared, all at once. If just one look at you could do that to him, then you must be pretty darn special to him.”

He peeked over at you, hoping to find that his words were reassuring you. The sight of your stunned expression, your cheeks dusted a light pink, made his breath catch in his throat for a moment.

Was it really so surprising to think that Ray would value you so much? It seemed more unbelievable to Fenrir that he wouldn’t. The Black Army headquarters had really started to feel like home again once you arrived. Even with the threat of war looming over their heads, your presence alone was enough to put everyone at ease. Maybe he’d taken it for granted that you knew how much you meant to them—to him.

“Listen, I don’t know anyone else who could have that kind of effect on my buddy. That’s the honest truth. So keep your head up high, okay?”

Come on, smile for me. That worried look doesn’t suit you.

As though you’d heard his thoughts, your expression softened with relief and you glanced over at him with a small, touched smile. “Oh, Fenrir... you really are an amazing friend.”

He huffed a short laugh as if by instinct, but somehow it sounded a little strained in his own ears. “Like I said, I was just being honest with ya.”

“Still, thank you.”

“No need. What are friends for, right?”

You hummed in agreement, and it was almost funny how much that one little action reminded him of Ray. Had you picked up on that habit of his, too? Or was he starting to rub off on you, after spending so much time together?

Fenrir watched as your attention wandered back to him, and you took a deep breath. “Okay. I’ll talk to him, then.” Your voice still sounded a little nervous, but he didn’t miss the way that determination flickered in your eyes, and he decided then and there that he strongly preferred seeing you confident to seeing you doubt yourself. 

He would’ve found himself admiring that look in your eyes much longer, in fact, if you didn’t snap him out of his reverie by suddenly planting a kiss on his cheek. His eyes going wide as saucers, Fenrir’s hand flew to his face, hovering over the spot you had kissed.

“Thanks again.” With one last smile, you excused yourself and began to make your way across the room to Ray. 

Standing frozen in place, Fenrir would have sworn that his cheek was tingling. He watched the scene unfold in front of him—you approaching Ray, patting his shoulder to get his attention, Ray looking up curiously and immediately greeting you with a warm grin... 

And then Fenrir had to look away, his heart squeezing uncomfortably in his chest. The sound of his two favorite people in the world laughing together should have had the opposite effect, so why was he feeling like this? Why was he so flustered, so conflicted?

What was happening to him?

Dragging his feet as he trudged back to his room, Fenrir tried to be extra careful, so he wouldn’t wake anyone up. He held his head in one hand, sighing. He really only meant to have one drink when he headed out to the tavern after dinner, but time must have gotten away from him. 

He’d be lying if he said the buzz wasn’t helping a little, though. It hadn’t made him forget about the issue that was bothering him, but it made it easier to think about, at least.

“An amazing friend, huh?” he muttered to himself. A flat, self-derisive chuckle slipped through his lips as he began to climb the stairs, still sensible enough to watch his step. He wondered if you would still consider him such an amazing friend if you saw him now, stumbling home drunk after seeing you so happy with another guy.

And Ray, what about him? What would he think if he knew that it broke Fenrir’s heart to imagine him with you? He was hardly acting like an amazing friend right now. If anything, he was the opposite.

“This is pathetic.” Fenrir wished he still had a drink with him to take a swig from, especially when he reached the top of the stairs and rounded the corner. “Hm?”

Standing in front of the door to Ray’s bedroom, two figures were currently wrapped in a tender embrace, their lips pressed together as they held each other close. Although the hallway was dark at this hour of the night, it didn’t take much guesswork to figure out what he was seeing. Fenrir would recognize your silhouette and that of his best buddy anywhere.

And the sight left him absolutely devastated. 

Sensing that you were no longer alone, you jumped back from Ray’s arms, abruptly severing your kiss. “Oh!”

Startled by your sudden reaction, Ray turned to follow your gaze, cautiously stepping in front of you. “Who’s there?” He squinted through the darkness, trying to make out the figure who was now standing completely still at the end of the hallway. “Fenrir? Is that you?”

Ha. So Ray would recognize me in the dark, too. 

“Yeah. Sorry to scare you,” Fenrir let out a tense laugh, scratching the back of his neck. “It looks like I’m interrupting something, huh?”

Upon realizing that it was just him, both of you visibly relaxed, although Fenrir could imagine the way you must’ve been blushing.

“Well... We talked about it, and it sounds like we’re on the same page, so...” You looked to Ray, who wrapped his arm around your waist in response, silently confirming that the feeling was mutual.

“Aw, you don’t owe me an explanation,” Fenrir waved his hand dismissively. “I will say... This is good. Really good. You two, you both deserve the best...”

Through the shadows, he could faintly see Ray’s brows furrowing together. “Fenrir, were you out drinking? What’s up?”

As much as he was trying to keep the waver out of his voice, he should’ve known that Ray would see right through him. You both were staring at him now, and his voice hitched in his throat as he tried to sort out all the emotions swirling inside him.

Damn it, this isn’t how he wanted to react. He didn’t mean to interrupt your moment or make you worry about him. You should be celebrating, and he should be happy for you. Really, truly happy for you, without any reservations. He had no reason—no right—to feel so crushed.

“Nothing’s up. I just felt like going out to town, that’s all,” he shrugged. “And listen, I won’t tell anyone what I saw, so you don’t need to worry about that. Although I’m sure everyone will be thrilled when you’re ready to tell them. Ha, I can hear Seth’s voice already. You know, he was hoping this would happen.”

Fenrir could feel that you were both still hesitant, watching him carefully, so he continued on, desperate to put you both at ease. 

“As for me, well... I’m always rooting for you, ya know? I, uh...” He paused, clearing his throat. “You two mean a lot to me, so I’ll support you no matter what. Really, I mean it.”

Silence hung in the air for a moment. A heavy silence, as though none of you would dare to breathe. 

Ray was the first to speak again, his voice a soft murmur. 

“I never doubted that, buddy.” 

Fenrir tensed at the tone of his voice, understanding the meaning it carried. Ray was simultaneously grateful for his offer of support and confused as to why he even felt it was necessary to say. So, then, he’d assumed that Fenrir would’ve been on board from the beginning, and probably that he already knew how Ray felt. Maybe that was why he hadn’t bothered to explain anything to him.

Oh, I’m such an idiot. 

Fenrir was always the first to notice whenever something was wrong with Ray. That was true. But he’d forgotten that it was true the other way around, too. Of course his buddy would know that there was something more going on here if he didn’t step up his game.

For the sake of Ray’s happiness and yours, Fenrir had to do what he did best. 

Put on a brave face. 

No matter how much it might hurt.

Pasting his cheerful smile back onto his face, his words spoke the truth, even if his expression was lying. “Well, then, I’ll leave you to it. My head’s pounding, so I think I should get to bed. I’ll celebrate with you properly tomorrow, yeah?”

“Thank you, Fenrir.”

Your gentle voice was clearly meant to offer him some sort of solace, but somehow it made him feel even worse. Still, he kept his smile exactly as it was, turning to walk away with a carefree wave.

“No need. What are friends for, right?”

It’s 4pm. She has a few minutes until she stands from her spot and makes her daily trek deep into the Forbidden Forest. A white rabbit watches curiously from the Civic Center as she holds herself differently than she had the past two months when she walked.

He knows something has been missing for a while now. It’s been missing from his heart, too. For a moment he swore he could see him there with her as she looked up.

It’s 6pm. Another tea time has come and gone. The house is right in front of her but she feels miles away as she presses her hand to the wooden door. The hinges squeal from disuse. It opens and she walks in. In the quiet she allows herself to go to his room, ignoring the dust as she clutches the picture frame from the side table. She doesn’t realize her sore throat is from the screaming.

AN: Over a year in the works, I kept pushing this fic off. “Maybe next event” the fic forever changing to match the event and the seasons. I finally was able to get the words on the page, Ikerev being discontinued made this fic even harder to write. This is connected to my angst fic Pyrrhic. Please pay attention to the warnings before reading.

Nothing was the same without her, nothing brought him joy anymore. The Jack of Spades just goes through the motions, even the joy of cooking for others seeming to vanish since that day. Never daring to stop, Luka pushes himself, wanting to keep the taunting memories away. Part of his mind always expects her to come bursting into the kitchen, his ears waiting for the sound of her gentle knocks when the rest of the base is asleep. Instead, her necklace is a heavy weight around his neck, a constant reminder that she is gone.  

Hurrying away from the army base, Luka makes his way down a barely traveled path, his feet never more sure of the footing. Carrying a bouquet of flowers and a gentle smile, he enters the fields of flowers, barely able to make out the figure standing on the other side of it. 

“I knew I would find you at our secret spot” Luka murmurs as he approaches, his voice breaking the silence of the serene meadow. Turning to meet him, Alice’s eyes brighten at the sight of her lover. 

“Luka, I thought you weren’t going to come” Reaching her hand out to him, Luka’s eyes close automatically as she touches his cheek. He can feel her fingers caress his skin, the breeze around them picking up. 

“You haven’t been taking care of yourself” she scolds, voice much softer than it used to be. She studies him carefully, the light of the setting sun frames her face, making her look like an angel. 

“It has been hard without you around.” Luka admits softly, his eyes glance down, and Alice gently lifts his chin back up. 

“I know it's hard, Luka, but the Black army needs you now more than ever. They need to know that Cradle is going to be okay.” Her words bring a rueful smile to Luka’s lips. 

“I always admired you for that” Luka murmurs, and Alice turns to him, tilting her head. 

“What?” 

“Your selflessness. Even now you worry about everyone but yourself” Luka sighs heavily, his hands tracing the bouquet, before he hands it to her. “We miss you a lot”  He notices the pain that flickers in her gaze, a lonely look that is gone in the blink of an eye. Giving him a soft smile, she leads him  to the edge of the cliff, sitting amongst the flowers and grass. 

Luka follows suit sitting next to her, both keeping their gaze on the port of Black Territory and the sun setting in the horizon. 

“How is everyone holding up? I miss you guys so much” Alice asks, worry etched on her face.

“Its so quiet now. Ray locks himself mainly in the office. He is always doing paperwork or running the units through training. It is a struggle to get him to take any time off, whenever he is off he goes to the gun range. Sirius hasn’t changed much on the outside, but he never seems to stop. All he does is worry over Ray and I, making sure the army is taken care of. He is always busy too, none of us have really been sleeping, when we do we are haunted by that day.” Luka admits, and Alice lets out a soft sigh. Her hand reaches out to cover his, scars running across their skin. 

“Alice?” Luka’s voice is near silent, the question heavy on his mind. 

“Yeah?” 

“Would you do it again?” Luka asks, and Alice pauses, knowing there is more on the Jack’s mind. “I have gone over the day over and over, but I can’t find a way to make this different, a way to change the outcome. I can’t tell where we went wrong, or how it came to this. I feel so helpless.” Lukas hand clenches into fists at  his side and Alice gently covers them. 

“I wouldn’t change a thing, we couldn’t. We planned the best we could with the information we had. I would give my life again if it meant keeping Cradle safe.” Alice gives Luka a warm smile, and his heart wrenches. 

“But I lost you-”  pressing her fingers against his lips, Alice shushes Luka.  Her fingers trail to the necklace he wears around his neck, and she presses a kiss to it. 

“I am right here. I’ll always stay with you and whenever you need a little strength just squeeze this. You are so strong Luka, so caring. Please take care of Cradle, I’ll always be here watching when you need me.” The pain and conviction in her eyes spoke the words that she couldn’t. Pressing closer to him, she reaches up on her tippy toes. Closing his eyes, Luka reaches down, eyes fluttering open when the wind brushes them instead of a kiss. The spot in front of him was vacant. Looking around at the empty meadow,reality slowly sinks in bringing back the heavy weight to his mind. 

Tears blur his vision as he sinks next to the grave on the edge of the cliff. His fingers trace the engraving over and over, eyes too blurred to see the writing he knew was there.

A Series of Firsts - Content Creator Challenge

This idea has been living rent-free in my head for too long, and as the holiday season and end of the year approaches, I felt it was time to throw this into the void - a content creator challenge focusing only on the lesser popular suitors.

This a suitor-specific event - please read rules below.

Rules:

This challenge begins on December 1 and ends on December 31. Sometime in January, I will create a master list of everything that was submitted for the event.

Entries may be SFW or NSFW (must be 18+ to submit NSFW content) and be either fluff/angst/crack/smut or anything in between - it is at the discretion of the creator which direction they go in, but please tag your works accordingly with any applicable triggers.

This challenge is open to all types of fan work, including fanart and fanfic.

Welcome to what I hope will be a fun, interesting writing challenge 🌌

After seeing the results of yesterday's poll, I'm going ahead with the One Suitor, One Prompt Content Creation Challenge.

How will this work:

At the end of this post will be a poll which will determine which Ikemen game the challenge will be based off. I am only including games which have English localizations.

Once the game has been chosen by popular vote, all the main suitors from that game will be added to a choice wheel from pickerwheel.com

Fifteen generic prompts will be added to a second wheel (prompts are listed below)

Once the suitor and prompt have been chosen, the writing can begin!

The length/ type of fic (nsfw, fluff, angst, AU, etc) is entirely up to the writer. Anything goes.

Rules:

This challenge will start on August 5th and conclude on Sept 2nd. Sometime after that date, I will create a masterlist of all contributions.

This challenge is open to writers for the Ikemen fandom.

Cozytober 2023 (aka, my 250 Followers Celebration!)

I'm celebrating 250 followers!! I'm so thankful to all of you who have followed me and interacted with my posts and fics, and to thank you all, I'm combining my annual Cozytober Writing Challenge with my Follower Celebration!

All info and Rules are listed below! This writing challenge is open to everyone, and there's a little something to scratch every itch.

I decided to do something a little different this year, so all of the prompts for this event are songs! I handpicked this list from my favorites; some are upbeat and fun, others are a little more somber, and many of them evoke that hazy, haunting mood of the autumn season. I encourage you to listen to them, but it's not a requirement! I will have a link to the lyrics of each song that you are free to use at your leasure.

This challenge is open to Fluff, Slice of Life, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, and Smut for all Ikemen Games, including Ikemen Prince, Ikemen Sengoku, Ikemen Vampire, Ikemen Villains, Ikemen Revolution, and Ikemen Genjiden!

Rules:

NO minors or ageless blogs are allowed to post smut for this challenge.

If you are an ageless blog and you post Smut for this challenge, you will get a single DM warning and the 48 hours following to post your age on your blog, or you will be blocked from my blog. This blog is the rp side blog of @twistedwonderworm. I'm mostly a fanfic writer, but I want to get more into roleplays, and this is the first time I've thought about looking for roleplay partners on Tumblr. I do both OC and fandom roleplays. For fandom roleplays, I do both double up canon/OC roleplays and canon/canon roleplays. I'm also pretty flexible with my roleplaying so it can either be on discord or in DMs. If you want to roleplay any other way, please let me know.

I operate on a three-strike system. Break any of my rules, and I will give you a strike. Earn three strikes, and I will end the roleplay.

BLACK: what face claim from an anime, comic book, or cartoon do I associate with you?

Of course, you already know this one, but it really is Alex Benedetto from Gangsta.! She’s gorgeous, has the right colouring, and is just always the first character to pop into my head when I think of Martha!

WHITE: what flame type and box weapon do I think you’d have in the khr!verse?

While I sort of answered this when I did the other personalization prompt, I do think you have dual Mist and Rain Flames. Your Mist Flames are just the tiniest bit stronger, and though you can’t create full blown illusions, you can use the Mist Flames in ways that do help to deceive or trick others, mostly in defensive ways, while your Rain Flames are the more offensive of the two. As far as box weapons go, I think your Rain box animal is a whale and your Mist Flame animal is a turkey. Going again with the symbolism of spirit animals, both of these animals have deep ties towards community and family. The whale is a symbol of wisdom, emotional healing, keeping history, and peaceful strength, while the turkey is a symbol of abundance and generosity.

okay so fair warning every game has angst so you'll be hurting no matter what BUT i do think. Based on my own experiences. that revolution has a lot of fluffy sweet moments next to the sad. i wouldn't go for prince in your case since all of the routes are Littered with angst. also vampire has some lighter angst from what ive seen but once again it very much depends on the route!!!
