Was listening to "The Manuscript" by Taylor Swift and got this fic idea. I really like that song.

He heard his mother's voice in his sleep. It was muddled, like trying to remember a dream. Like he was forgetting. 

Elbert’s small hands reached for the edge of her dress. She froze and her face turned pale. With fear in her eyes like she was looking at a phantom. He didn't understand why at the time. A child that young shouldn't have to understand why. But he did only a few weeks later.

No.

It slipped through his fingers. He couldn’t breathe. 

No. Not again.

He tried to hold on, but it was torn away by the scream of the maid.

And then the hands. All over him. Water filled his lungs and his eyes stung.

No.

But their hands kept going down. They pulled his clothes, and kept touching. It didn't matter how many times he said no. 

It never mattered how many times he said no. His stomach churned and he swore he could feel it rise up his throat. But nothing came out.

He felt the telltale sign of him waking up. He could only breathe when the dream began to fade.

The faces that brought terror to him blurred. The ghosts dissipated once again to only an imprint in the back of his mind. 

But the touch on him didn't fade. He was still in bed. It was still dark. He was still there.

His eyes flung open in terror and met yours. He flew up as his body shook.

You flinched your hand back. Your face filled with concern.

It was just you.

He calmed down. But his heart was still racing. He made the person he loved most in the world worry again.

“Sorry,” he apologized. He stared down at the bed.

His heart wouldn’t slow down.

“No, I'm sorry. You looked like you were having a nightmare.” Your eyes widened as you remembered your first night at his manor. And realized you were at his bedside, and you touched him. “I'm so sorry. I didn’t mean to-”

“It's alright,” he smiled softly as he met your gaze. You really were too kind. It only made him love you more.

His body still trembled slightly.

You desperately wanted to hold him, to comfort him. But he'd been so hurt under the guise of ‘comfort’.

“I don't mind your touch. It's okay.”

It like he could read your mind.

You'd had this conversation before. But you always worried.

“Tell me if it makes you feel uncomfortable. Please.”

He doubted you could ever do that. He nodded. You sat in the bed and scooted to rest against the headboard. You held your arms out. An invitation. One he could choose to accept.

He slowly lowered himself into your arms. You held his head gently, yet tight, to your chest. You rested your chin on his head and breathed in his hair. He could hear your heartbeat. He wished he could own that too, even more than he already did. Maybe if he had you like this all the time, he could finally rest.

You kissed the top of his head. Your hands soothingly stroked him.

“I'm so sorry.”

He could hear the tears in your voice.

You said it for a different reason this time.

He took a deep breath in and exhaled. He completely relaxed in your arms. You held his head protectively. Like shielding him from his own memories, and the world. You would if you had to.

He squeezed his eyes shut and nuzzled into you. You felt so soft. He couldn’t believe he was this lucky. After all this time.

Tears pooled beneath his eyelashes. He didn't understand why. He was the happiest he'd ever been.

“I love you,” he breathed.

Your eyes misted too. You kissed him again and hugged him close. “I love you too.”

Nothing could hurt him now.
