5 festival decoration ideas to make your home sparkle

We help your house come alive with its own magic – and with a little decoration help – this festival season with DIY ideas.

Festivals are a great time to bring family and friends together. There is much merriment in the air, and the gales of laughter and conversation keep the festivities going for hours on end. You love entertaining and throwing parties, and the best part for you is decorating your home to make it look livelier during the festival season.

This year, why not create your own festival decorations? You need some basic materials and an active imagination to create the best decorations. We’ve got some handy ideas for you to try:

1 The stars shine down. Stars are usually the starting point in festival decoration ideas from IKEA. They are versatile and cheerful, and they are easy to create as well. Take a large sheet of cardboard or card filing paper and cut out star-shapes in the size you want. Now paint the cut-outs with silver or gold paint, add glitter and radium stickers, and hang the stars all over the house.

2 Quirk is in. Who says you should go down the traditional route of stars and streamers when you’re looking for some festival decoration idea inspiration? You can even go down the quirky route. Everything goes as far as decoration is concerned, so try something different this year. Plant waffle cones inside plain glass tumblers and stick fresh flowers in them – you’ve got yourself a bunch of easy table decorations. You can cut thick paper in a geometric pattern, stick the ends together and place a tea light in the centre for an unusual ‘lantern’. You can get as creative as you want and come up with your unique designs.

3 Green centrepieces. This is a great DIY project the whole family can participate in. You need green beans or brussels sprouts, some palm fronds or the leafy tops of pineapples, clear plastic sheets, strong tape and sturdy cardboard. Roll out equal measures of the sprouts or beans and encase them in a cylinder of plastic. Close one end with the cardboard – cut about 4 to 5 equal-sized pieces and stick them together to create a stand – and on the other end, plant the palm frond. Seal off the other end with tape. There, that’s an unusual centrepiece that’s sure to start a conversation!

4 Lose your marbles. Marbles are an essential part of any festival decoration idea. Create an interesting series of lights using mason jars, fairy lights and marbles. Take the lid off the mason jar, and let about 3/4th of the stringed fairy lights into the jar. Do not let the wire settle at the bottom; hold it slightly loose inside the jar and start filling it with marbles. Do not overcrowd the jar with marbles or the lights might get crushed. When the jar is full, run the other length of the lighting wire through the lid of the mason jar and close the jar with the lid. Plug the lights into the socket and see how pretty the jar looks throwing lights in unusual patterns. You can create a series of these lights using jars, marbles and lights of different colours and sizes.

5 Paper rosettes. Rosettes are easy to make – and they don’t necessarily need to resemble roses – with a bunch of newspapers, some glue and some paint. Fold the paper into the shape of the flower, and glue it shut so that it doesn’t unravel (scotch tape also works well for creating a seal). Now spray paint or hand paint the rosettes, and twine them together using coloured thread. Hang as a streamer over your front door to welcome your guests.
