Acquisition Acceptance
Waldo’s Special Ale is a glass of hop oil disguised as beer. It’s thick and sweet and boozy. Lagunitas’ characteristic pineapple and resin flavor is as present as ever. It’s a heady twelve percent alcohol, but it feels good. Unlike last month’s High West-ified, this is proof that ownership doesn’t correlate with quality.
You’ve probably heard the news by now, but in case you live under a rock: Heineken bought the other half of Lagunitas last week.
When I was in the local bottle shop, everyone was abuzz, Wicked Weed and Lagunitas in one week? But the consensus seemed to be that Lagunitas was doing it right. I mean, they sold half the company in 2015, and continued to put out great beers, so that’s good? The mood seemed resigned. If the ownership changes and the beer stays the same, why bother?
Closer to home, Bend’s 10 Barrel was also in the blogosphere last week. The brewery is ignoring their parent company while proudly touting ten years of independent brewing. It was ironic, but not unexpected. It’s not like Kraft Foods gets a mention every time Boca Burger celebrates a milestone. And really, at Lagunitas and everywhere else, the same people are in charge as three years ago.
I understand that it takes more than a year or two for a brewery to really change. Especially with the same leadership. That’s not what the worrywarts fear. It’s the long term shifts that keep blogger up at night. You have to remember: a monopoly isn’t made overnight. It took fifty years for the Anheuser’s and the Busch’s to dismantle the American brewing machine -- 754 brewing companies in 1934 to 51 in 1983.
In Draft Magazine, an anonymous source at an anonymous brewery described what’s changed since they were sold. Not much, apparently. Benefits are better. The beer brewed is more consistent. And everything is better documented, keeping track of where money goes out and how the money rolls in. You can’t pinch pennies if you don’t know where the pennies are.
As long as breweries are turning a profit, the corporate overlords have no incentive to change how things are run. But in another few years, if the beer market slows, if Donald Trump does something stupid and destroys the economy, the corporate overlords will have their profits, one way or another.

Trilogy MMXVIII by Northern Monk Brew Co
Trilogy MMXVIII by Northern Monk Brew Co. Collaborations with Verdant, Garage and Whiplash make up 2018s trilogy box
Tumblr media
Thank you, Santa! I had been eyeing this trilogy boxset for a while. This is Northern Monk’s third year of these projects, with the Roman numeral symbolising the year of release MMXVIII = 2018. The aim of the trilogy series is to highlight the key components of beer: yeast, hops and malts. The trilogies consist of 3 different collaborations, with each brewery working with Northern Monk to create…

GoodLife Brewing announces their upcoming releases for 2020, including a ton of draft-only releases
Press Release
Tumblr media
image sourced from GoodLife Brewing
BEND, OR … 2020 is going to be a year of blending GoodLife’s core products with the releases of more barrel aged beers. We added two 15bbl tanks a year ago and those have proven to be incredibly valuable to our brewers ability to push R&D further than they have before. With the increased creative ability, the feedback in our pub has been amazing and allowed us to put a bigger emphasis on balancing our yearly offerings to the masses.
GoodLife Brewing owner, Ty Barnett, said "We are very excited about the new beers coming out this year. Our goal is to always keep our brew team challenged and excited but more importantly to keep it fun! Those who have visited our tasting room here at the brewery in Bend have been really blown away with our tap line-up. We have let our fans be the judges for what to keep making more of through our Pub Exclusive beers. I, for one, am stoked to make some more of these delicious brews for more to try.”
Music and beer is still the passion of the brewery and as we enter year three of our partnership with G. Love and Special Sauce the connection still runs deep. With the success of last years The Juice IPA and G. Love’s recent album release, The Juice, we are keeping the beer the same as last year! Why change a great beer and in conjunction with G. Love and Special Sauce touring throughout the Northwest in March, we will be releasing The Juice IPA two months earlier than normal to get the hops flowing.
Speaking of hops, our “HoppyLife” series, which is available in draft only, will feature Mountain Rescue Dry Hop Pale Ale, Oh Daaaank! Hazy IPA, Beach Life Pineapple Pale Ale, Evil Sister IIIPA, Pinot Beer, 150 Hippies Fresh Hop IPA, and Redside Red IPA.
On the not so hoppy side of the brewery, the barrels that will be emptied this year for our “In the Woods” series, which will also be draft only, will be Reserve Saison, Apricot Wild Ale, Pinot Beer Barrel Aged, Big Winter Barleywine, Bourbon Big Winter, Bourbon Imperial Stout, and Yukon Cornelius Spiced Winter Ale.

The Season of More
Coinciding with Russian River’s annual Pliny the Younger release, every brewer with leftover hops tries their hand at a triple IPA. It’s harder than it looks. Balancing double a digit alcohol content with juicy hops and some semblance of body is a tough challenge.
Sixpoint’s Hi-Res doesn’t quite pass the bar. It smells great, releasing a cloud of pineapple must as soon as it’s opened. It tastes pretty good, the pineapple transforms into a resinous, sticky pine sap on the tongue. But the alcohol got a lot of heat to it -- like grapefruit vodka. And the body is a little lacking in heft. It’s a pleasant kick in the teeth, but not a spectacular display.
