𝐄𝐘𝐄𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐖  𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐒𝐄𝐒  𝐀𝐓  𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍,     unsure  on  what  the  catch  might  be  because  people  on  the  isle  didn’t  just  offer  things  out  without  a  price.     he  also  didn’t  know  if  he  could  trust  any  of  these  kids  from  auradon,  he  barely  trusted  any  of  the  kids  on  the  isle  and  he  had  grown  up  with  most  of  them.     plus  he  had  never  seen  anything  like  what  was  being  offered  to  him,  it  looked  delicious  but  they  didn’t  have  anything  like  that  on  the  isle,  at  least  nothing  as  covered  in  icing  and  sprinkles.     blue  eyes  narrow  at  chad  for  a  moment,  head  titling  to  the  side,      “     what  do  i  have  to  give  you  for  it?      ”

     HE  HAD  NEVER  BEEN  TO  A  SCHOOL  DANCE,      it  wasn’t  like  they  were  common  on  the  isle  and  probably  would’ve  just  ended  in  a  brawl  anyway.      he  didn’t  really  know  how  to  feel  about  it.      harry  had  been  keeping  evie  company  as  she  made  many  different  dresses  for  different  people  and  he  could  tell  how      EXCITED      she  was  for  the  dance.      of  course,  he  had  asked  her  if  she  wanted  to  go  with  him,  not  quite  mentioning  yet  that  he  wasn’t  quite  sure  how  to  dance.      he  also  had  no  idea  how  she’d  found  the  time  to  make  him  a  jacket  for  the  dance  and  of  course  it  had  to  be  during  a  fitting  for  her  amazing  work  that  he  felt  like  he  had  to  be  honest,      “      evie      .      .      .      maybe  you  should  go  to  the  dance  with  someone  else,  someone  who  actually  will  be  able  to  dance  with  you  since      .      .      .      i  don’t  really  know  how,      ”

     HE  WAITED  FOR  THE  FREAK  OUT,      for  the  argument  about  him  finding  any  excuse  to  get  out  of  the  dance,  even  though  he  really  wanted  to  go  and  be  there  with  her.      but  it  never  came,  instead  she  moved  things  aside,  changing  the  music  and  moved  to  stand  in  front  of  him,      “      then  let  me  teach  you,      ”      she  said  softly,  taking  his  hands,  holding  one  tightly,  the  other  is  placed  on  her  hip  as  blue  eyes  stay  focused  on  her,  a  loving  smile  pulling  at  his  lips.      following  her  lead  as  she  moves  in  time  with  the  music,  it  was  a  basic  stepping  motion  that  allowed  him  to  keep  watching  her  and  allow  the  control  of  their  movements  to  move  from  evie  guiding  him  to  the  other  way  around,  him  guiding  her  and  as  his  confidence  grew,  he  would  spin  her  gently,  loving  the  way  she  smile  at  him.      evie  really  did  make  him  better,  she  made  him  try  things  he’d  never  do  like  dance,  she  encouraged  him  and  gave  him  confidence,  which  was  so  different  than  what  he  was  used  to.      when  the  song  was  over,  they  were  still  stood  together,  smiling  breathlessly  at  one  another,      “      well,  i  think  i’m  ready  for  the  dance,      ”

The Dreaming: waking Hours issue 11 review

Okay, there’s a  lot to unpack here.   First the good.

Daniel was actually portrayed as competent and compassionate. Hurray! 

Too bad those sparks of intelligence from Daniel don’t seem to last very long when he’s not being written by Neil.  

 Also I was right that Heather is trans and that was not treated as a major plot point.   More on that later.

Though I have to wonder, with all her power, why she transitioned medically instead of magically.  I imagine if she used magick to transition she wouldn't need permanent hormone medication.  I know it helps to represent the real trans condition but sometimes you want a little convenient magical escapism of making it easier. 

Now for the picking apart / bad stuff.   

Though G. Willow Wilson is well-versed in faery lore enough to know the rules about true names and concepts like The Unseelie I am afraid she mishandles them a bit.   For example she treats the Unseelie like this one specific faceless type of fae instead of an entire fae court of dark fae that usually entails goblins, trolls, drow, imps, etc.  

She also doesn’t seem to know that in most depictions of Oberon and Titania they were nonchalant and very familiar with each other’s infidelities.   Oberon should not have been surprised (especially this far into things) that Titania slept with Morpheus.  

Titania all but bluntly spelt it out at The Wake.  I am fairly certain Oberon was there.  Where was he when she spoke?  Drinking in the back?

In some faery lore Nuala was Oberon’s lover.  I had figured that was the reason Titania saw to it she was given as a gift to Morpheus.  It was both a means to possibly get rid of her or if Morpheus didn’t accept the gift (she must have known his anti-slavery stance) it would have given a justifiable excuse for the Fae to go to war with The Dreaming and potentially lay claim to the key to Hell in Season of Mists.   

Even Disney’s Gargoyles acknowledged this aspect of their character dynamic. When Oberon learned that Titania had a half-human child in the episode The Gathering Part 1 of Disney’s Gargoyles his response was (while grinning and chuckling) “Mother?!  Titania, what HAVE you been up to?”  

In the Shakespeare play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, it was pretty clear that Oberon wanted Titania to sleep with Bottom while he had an ass’s head (blatant metaphor) as a means to humiliate her. 

Moving on.

Yes, I was right that Heather is trans.  I am very glad it was not a major plot point before now.  However, the way her “True name” was handled wasn’t as good as I had hoped.  I had hoped that the fact that she chose the name Heather After that this has become her true name.  But the implication here is her deadname could have been used as her true name.  That bothers me.

I always figured true names (the name that can be used to summon and bind a magick user or supernatural creature) didn’t necessarily have to be the name you had at birth.  For example Vlad III of Wallachia is more well known as Drakulya (Dracula), the name he chose for himself as a patronymic homage to his father and so got used as his own house name.

In the 1985 Fright Night the character of Peter Vincent at first said “That isn’t even my real name.” But after he undergoes considerable character growth and puts protecting others before his own fear he starts saying “I AM Peter Vincent, the great vampire killer!”  The persona became his true name. 

True names are NOT necessarily the name you had at birth.  This is part of why I feel the previous aspect of Dream may have Morpheus as as close to a true name as he’s got.  That’s why he’s credited as Lord Morpheus instead of Dream in The Sandman audio drama and calling out to him by the name Morpheus is how he came to rescue Rose from Funland in The Sandman: The Doll’s House.

 So anyway, I’m conflicted about this scene in The Dreaming: Waking Hours.  I’m glad the deadname didn’t work as the true name but I would have felt better of Heather had become her true name.  That would have, in my opinion, been more satisfying than “There’s no such thing as a true name.”

Something else that bugged me... All the ham-handed anti-monarchy commentary.  In real life monarchies are not great buuut we’re talking about the faerie court here. They’re not human.  Can you even imagine what the goblins would vote for if they had a democracy?   “Okay, that’s 97% in favor of abducting every infant in Manhattan.  And 3% wrote in ‘Chilli dogs.’  I didn’t know they could spell...”

It’s become a little embarrassing to me how every fantasy written by Americans has become anti-monarchy. Disney’s Descendants, Once Upon a time’s finale (they voted...), Game of Thrones’ ending, because having any sort of vote in a world that never had any before would totally work out well at that point in their culture....  Even on Tumblr I came across someone who thought they could “fix” the “Dumpster fire” that is Nightmare before Christmas by having the mayor strip Jack Skellington of his Pumpkin King title as punishment for what he did to Christmas since “You can’t learn your lesson if you do wrong without punishment.”    Frankly, I’m tired of the anti-monarchy stuff where it doesn’t actually work.  

And the deliberately weak argument written for Titania of “But I’m Beautiful and Ancient!”   Also what’s with the weird almost-fetishism that she’s still wearing those manacle cuffs? Why didn’t Oberon or even Nuala take those off of her yet since they’re working together?  

This is interesting because right here in the final page Heather quotes the very spell that invoked Morpheus.  I have been mentally conditioned that every time I see black talk bubbles with white text in a Sandman universe comic my first thought is “Morpheus?” even though we have already seen it used for other characters in things like the Dan Watters run of Lucifer.

But the combination of quoting the invocation spell that trapped Morpheus, the talk bubble, and the golden thread (that resembles Morpheus’ life thread) has me intrigued and I don’t want to get my hopes up at the possibilities. 

And still, for all my nitpicking, this IS the best version of The Dreaming to date. 

I love Heather.  I think she’s very well written.  She’s the best original character of any Sandman spin-off.  I just think the anti-monarchy ranting is very misplaced in the realm of Faerie.   Think of what their parliament would consist of.   It’s like the minion of Jadis, The White Witch from Chronicles of Narnia, combined with the goblin muppets from Labyrinth, and the fae from Lost Girl combined.

     A  FEW  YEARS  AGO,      you  would  never  have  found  him  and  the  pirates  sitting  around  laughing  with  jay  and  carlos,  you  never  would  have  found  some  auradon  boys  sat  with  them  too  and  actually  enjoying  the  stories.      yet  that  was  exactly  what  you  could  find  right  now.      the  vks  telling  stories  of  the  isle  which  proved  despite  their  lack  of  comfort,  they’d  definitely  had  the  more  adventurous  lives  compared  to  the  auradon  lot.      jay  and  harry  were  in  the  middle  of  telling  the  story  of  actually  how  the  rivalry  between  them  all  got  so  bad,  which  now  they  were  somewhat  friends  was  kind  of  funny,  or  at  least  some  of  the  trouble  they  all  got  into  was  funny.      even  as  he  talking,  he  noticed  evie  moving  to  join  them,  moving  his  own  leg  so  she’d  have  more  room.      smile  widens  as  she  sits  herself  in  his  lap,  an  arm  of  hers  round  his  shoulders  whilst  he  had  an  around  her  waist.      it  was  just  more  proof  of  how  much  better  it  was  that  they  didn’t  have  to  sneak  around,  also  how  much  better  they  were  both  getting  at  being  openly  affectionate  with  one  another.      he  didn’t  care  about  the  looks  or  the  whispers,  he  was  just  happy  to  no  longer  have  to  hide  that  evie  and  him  were  together,      “      can’t  forget  the  time  we  went  crashin’  into  madam  zim’s  place!      ”      harry  smirked,  glancing  at  evie  who  had  been  the  one  to  patch  him  up  after  that  particular  incident  in  a  race  with  jay,      “      you  haven’t  seen  crazy  till  ya  have  been  chased  around  by  that  old  witch,      ”

     THE  BARRIER  WOULD  BE  CLOSED  FOR  GOOD,      with  him  forever  trapped  on  the  isle  and  with  her  free  to  enjoy  the  beauty  that  was  auradon.      even  in  his  short  visit,  he  had  understood  why  anyone  would  want  to  leave  the  isle  for  this.      but  he  could  and  would  not  leave  uma  and  the  crew  behind  on  the  isle  just  for  her.      he  didn’t  even  know  if  evie  was  still  interested  in  him  in  that,  her  compliment  ice  breaker  had  been  a  safe  one  but  it  had  given  him      HOPE      ,  but  mal  had  destroyed  all  hope  with  the  truth  and  despite  their  help,  the  barrier  would  remain  and  be  blocked  off  forever.      it  was  starting  to  hit  him  that  he  may      NEVER      see  evie  ever  again.

     HE  COULDN’T  JUST  LEAVE  WITHOUT  SAYING  ANYTHING  TO  HER,      but  he  had  never  been  very  good  with  words  or  expressing  his  emotions.      saying  goodbye  to  all  of  them  felt  weird,  it  shouldn’t  be  that  hard  but  it  left  a  lump  his  throat.      no  more  banter.      no  more  rivalry.      no  anything.      they  would  all  have  their  separate  lives  now,  never  to  cross  paths  again,  never  did  he  think  it  would  make  him  feel  like  this.      stopping  in  front  of  evie,  blue  eyes  shining  as  he  looked  at  her,  soft  and  loving  smile  reserved  for  her  on  his  lips,  not  caring  it  anyone  was  looking  at  him,      “      don’t  cry.      it’s  beyond  our  control,  the  best  for  auradon  right?      ”      he  says,  hand  coming  up  to  brush  the  tears  on  her  cheeks  away,      “      you  should      .      .      .      keep  practicin’  with  a  sword      .      .      .      sure  jay  can  help  ya,      ”      he  didn’t  know  what  to  say,  how  could  he  explain  the  ache  in  his  chest  that  he  felt  about  not  being  able  to  see  her  again?      he  couldn’t  even  tell  her  that  he  thought  he  may  be      IN  LOVE      with  her  because  it  wouldn’t  change  anything.      evie  belonged  in  auradon.      not  caring  about  the  others  or  what  they  may  think,  he  pulled  her  into  a  hug,  holding  her  tightly,  one  hand  cradling  her  head  as  he  held  her  close  and  then  she  whispered      ‘  even  if  we’re  worlds  apart,  you’re  still  in  my  heart  ’      harry’s  eyes  closed  for  a  moment,  holding  her  a  little  tighter  before  pulling  back  enough  to  press  a  kiss  to  her  forehead,      “      yer  always  been  right  here,      ”      he  admits  softly,  hand  resting  over  his  heart  for  a  moment.      slowly  he  took  off  his  favourite  ring  and  held  it  out  to  her,  looking  her  in  the  eye,      “      take  this.      won’t  match  anythin’  ya  own  and  will  be  too  big      .      .      .      but  i  want  ya  to  have  it,      ”      one  last  gentle  kiss  to  her  knuckles  and  he  moves  to  walk  back  through  the  barrier,  head  down  so  no  one  could  see  the  tear  escaping  down  his  cheek.

     HARRY  DIDN’T  CRY  VERY  OFTEN,      not  since  he  was  a  kid  and  his  father  had  drilled  it  into  him  how  tears  were  weakness  and  he  was  not  ever  allowed  to  show  any  kind  of  weakness.      even  when  his  father  got  violent,  he  didn’t  cry,  he  let  the  pain  become  anger  and  he  let  it  make  him  stronger.      if  also  slightly  unpredictable.      but  he      ALWAYS      found  physical  pain  easier  to  deal  with  than  emotional  pain.      if  anyone  was  to  ask  him  what  the  worst  pain  james  hook  had  ever  put  him  through,  it  would      NEVER      be  something  physical  he  had  done,  those  healed  and  scarred  over,  captain  hook��s  words  words  would  stick  with  harry  forever.      he  had  always  felt  a  disconnect  with  certain  emotions  because  of  what  his  father  had  told  him  was  a  weakness  and  what  emotions  he  had  learnt  to  find  strength  and  almost  safety  in,  which  probably  explain  why  he  hadn’t  handled  evie  leaving  to  go  to  auradon  very  well.      not  that  he  had  told  anyone  that  until  now.

     THEY  WERE  FINALLY  HAVING  THE  LONG  OVERDUE  CONVERSATION,      the  conversation  that  harry  had  no  idea  what  the  outcome  would  be.      what  if  evie  was  over  him?      what  if  she  had  finally  found  her  prince  like  she’d  always  talk  about?      what  if  he  was  just  fine  for  the  isle  but  no  good  for  her  in  auradon?      but  it  was  a  conversation  that  had  to  be  had,  even  after  midnight  in  the  kitchen  of  her  home.      it  had  just  started  out  casual,  him  finding  it  hard  to  sleep  in  actual  comfort  and  sharing  some  ice  cream  with  her.      but  the  more  they  spoke,  the  deeper  it  got  and  he  felt  that  familiar  pain  of  emotions  he  didn’t  like  feelings.      yes,  he  had  never  told  evie  how  he  felt  before  she  left  for  auradon  because  sharing  emotions  and  not  knowing  what  love  is  made  that  difficult  on  the  isle.      but  he  had  always  thought  he  had  proved  to  her  that  he  cared  about  with  his  actions.      she  still  left  and  it  was  like  he  didn’t  exist  anymore  because  she  finally  got  her  fairy  tale  ending.

     HARRY  DIDN’T  KNOW  IF  HE  WAS  TRYING  TO  NOT  GET  ANGRY  OR  NOT  CRY,      he  wanted  to  show  no  emotion  because  he  didn’t  want  to  be  weak  in  front  of  her.       but  the  more  he  admitted  how  much  it      HURT      that  she  had  left  and  he  was  left  on  the  isle  watching  them  all  parade  around  in  their  lives.      he  knew  when  he  had  seen  on  the  isle  after  they  had  come  to  take  mal  back,  he  had  actively  avoided  her  because  he  couldn’t  handle  the  rush  of  emotions.      but  he  had  still  made  sure  to  find  her  in  the  fight  on  the  docks  to  make  sure  she  didn’t  get  hurt,  only  for  jay  to  think  he  was  going  to  attack  her.      but  he  couldn’t  help  but  admit  that  her  leaving  had  been  the      WORST  PAIN      he  had  ever  met,  he  felt  abandoned,  not  good  enough  and  completely  worthless  when  he  all  he  wanted  was  to  be  the  most  important  thing  to  her  because  that  was  exactly  what  she  was  to  him.      that  was  when  it  all  became  too  much  and  he  couldn’t  hold  it  back  anymore,  tears  slipping  down  his  cheeks  as  he  realised  that  he  was  shaking  because  he  had  never  been  so      HONEST      with  someone.      he  wasn’t  quite  ready  to  tell  her  that  he  was      in  love      with  her.      but  that  didn’t  mean  he  didn’t  lean  into  her  and  just  let  himself  be  held  by  her  as  he  cried.      it  was  the  first  time  in  a  long  time  that  he  cried.      but  it  was  definitely  the  first  time  harry  hook  had  ever  cried  in  front  of  evie  and  right  now,  he  knew  this  was  exactly  where  he  wanted  to  be,  right  here  with  evie.

     “      I’M  SURE  YOUR  DAD  HAD  PLENTY  OF  NOT  NICE  THINGS  TO  SAY  ABOUT  ME  OR  JASMINE,      but  i  promise  you,  neither  of  us  hold  anything  against  you,      ”      aladdin  had  been  against  the  whole  idea  of  the  isle  of  the  lost,  thinking  it  was  not  a  way  to  get  anyone  to  learn  from  their  mistakes  and  it  was  essentially  punishing  all  the  innocent  kids  that  came  along  who  had  done  nothing  wrong.      he  had  been  given  a  second  chance  from  a  life  that  seemed  similar  to  a  way  a  lot  of  the  kids  on  the  isle  were  forced  to  grow  up.      he  did  not  hold  any  of  them  accountable  for  the  crimes  of  their  parents,  especially  not  jay,  who  both  he  and  jasmine  had  wanted  to  meet  before  king  ben  and  mal’s  wedding,      “      i  think  you  may  find  that  you  and  i  have  a  lot  more  in  common  than  you  may  think,      ”

     “      IT’S  GOOD  TO  HAVE  YOU  BACK,      captain,      ”      he  smiles  but  it  doesn’t  quite  reach  his  eyes.      maybe  it  was  the  knowledge  of  knowing  that  despite  everything  they  did  to  help  mal  to  stop  audrey,  they  would  never  be  getting  off  this  isle,  they  would  never  get  to  enjoy  the  freedom  of  auradon.      getting  to  be  there  for  that  short  while  made  this  all  the  worst.      gil  and  him  only  broke  out  to  find  uma,  they  hadn’t  known  about  all  the  other  chaos  going  on.      at  least  uma  was  back  with  her,  but  he  could  only  imagine  how  much  worse  it  felt  for  her  after  being  out  there  for  as  long  as  she  had  been,      “      what  do  we  do  now?      especially  since  we’re  stuck  here  for  good  now,      ”

     “      EVERYONE  IS  STILL  TREATING  ME  DIFFERENTLY.      guess  i  have  no  one  else  to  blame  but  myself  for  that,      ”      audrey  admitted  softly,  hand  brushing  mixed  coloured  hair  behind  her  ear,  refusing  to  look  at  harry,  teeth  pulling  at  her  bottom  lip.       everyone  expects  all  good  from  you  when  you’re  the  child  of  the  heroes,  yet  when  you  don’t  get  what  you  were  told  you  would  always  get  in  your  life  then  why  wouldn’t  you  fall  apart?      now  she  didn’t  know  where  she  stood,  she  wasn’t  who  she  was  before  and  she  didn’t  know  who  she  was  anymore,      “       i  know  i  have  no  right  to  complain,  i’ve  got  everything  i’ve  always  wanted.      i  should  just  be  quiet  now,      ”

     “      TRUST  ME  PRINCESS,      i’ve  got  ya,  i’m  not  gonna  let  anythin’  happen  to  ya,      ”      harry  smiles,  looking  up  at  from  where  she  was  sat  on  the  edge  of  the  old  ruins,  he  was  already  in  the  enchanted  lake  clearly  showing  her  that  he  was  comfortable  with  the  water  and  had  no  intention  of  letting  her  get  hurt.      he  had  learnt  to  swim  in  rough  waters  than  the  calm  enchanted  lake,  so  this  should  be  nice  and  easy  for  her.      being  in  the  water  was  fun  for  him  and  he  wanted  her  to  also  be  comfortable  with  something  he  loved  doing,  just  like  he  was  trying  to  do  with  her  and  sewing.      hands  are  placed  either  side  of  her,  moving  between  his  legs  as  he  pushed  himself  up  out  of  the  water  slightly,  looking  at  her  with  a  small  smile,      “      c’mon,  the  water’s  not  cold,  it’s  really  nice  and  i  promise  to  be  nice  and  patient  with  ya,      ”      he  knew  he  was  dripping  water  on  her,  so  she’d  know  it  wasn’t  anything  to  be  scared  of,  her  feet  already  in  the  water.      eyes  looking  over  her,  smile  widening  as  he  looks  up  at  her,      “      i’m  impressed  that  ya  managed  to  make  a  cute  bathin’  suit  too,  plus  your  hair  looks  cute  in  these  little  braids,      ”      letting  himself  move  back  into  the  water,  he  moves  back  and  helps  her  get  into  the  water,  not  surprised  when  she  clung  to  him,  her  eyes  wrapped  around  his  waist  and  he  holds  her  gently  as  he  moves  into  the  water,  smiling  as  he  looks  up  at  her,      “      see?      i  told  ya,  nothin’  to  be  scared  of,      ”      he  teased,  nose  brushing  against  hers  and  he  just  couldn’t  stop  smiling.      harry  didn’t  expect  her  to  kiss  him  at  that  moment  but  the  moment  she  was,  he’s  kissing  her  back,  groaning  softly  as  he  kisses  her,  arms  wrapping  around  her  to  hold  her  closer  to  him  before  pulling  back  softly,  knowing  his  eyes  were  shining  as  he  looks  up  at  her.      a  devilish  grin  pulls  at  his  lips  as  he  looks  at  her,      “      ready  to  go  under?      deep  breath,     ”      he  didn’t  even  wait  for  her  answer  before  quickly  going  under  the  calm  lake  water.
