hello! I'm going to be printing some comics for an upcoming con. could you offer any advice on printing comics? yours look so nice! thanks!
Ahh, thank you!
Well for starters, if you’ve never made a mini-comic before I would highly recommend reading this guide made by my friend and former professor Chris Schweizer. It details all the different types of book layout you can do and how to assemble them.
And now for some long winded explanations of my personal knowledge/experience of book making under the cut because I don’t know how to be concise:
In my experience, in making comics in the larger quantities for cons (everything I make is in batches of 20-30 books) saddle stitch stapled books are the only option easy enough to make consistently without wanting to pull my hair out. However you will need some equipment to assemble them, namely a long-arm stapler. (I recommend this kind, which is a bit pricier than the average long stapler but is higher powered and will work well with thicker 24+ page books)And you might want to invest in a swing arm paper trimmer for cutting the books to full bleed. (it’s not necessary to trim them to the printed edge but it makes them look ten times nicer)
As for the actual printing, you need to figure out what kind of paper you want to use up front to determine what kind of printing is best. I would highly advise going to a local print shop and getting everything printed on a laser black & white (or color if your comic is colored) printer over printing them at home on an ink jet. They look a lot nicer and ultimately cost less than buy a million cartridges of liquid gold ink. However, you are a lot more limited in paper texture by going the laser printed route, so super rough bumpy papers are out. (for example, I have a really heavily textured paper on The Catch cover and I have to print that part at home on an inkjet) You can get the books folded and assembled at a print shop, but it’s usually way cheaper to fold and assemble them yourself at home. (but I’m also super nitpicky about quality so I like doing it myself anyway)
For the interior pages themselves I would recommend any paper over 24lb. thickness, because less than that you’ll start seeing ghosting of the images on the opposite side. (regular printer paper is usually 20lb) I personally use 28lb laser color paper for the majority of my books, because it’s nice and sturdy. A ream of 500 will usually last you a long time.
For the cover I recommend using some color cardstock, it’s amazing how just picking a nice color with make it look fancy. You can easily cut out sections with x-acto knives to create interesting double-layered designs. (most of my books are double-layered die-cut covers) I would advise against using a white cover unless it’s really relevant to your story, because it looks uninteresting next to color/grey ones. Also don’t use the thin letter paper you used for the interiors as a cover, it looks lazy and cheap. (this is one of my biggest pet peeves) Since you’ll usually only be making so many, I’d recommend buying cover paper individually from an art supply or paper store, you’ll have a lot bigger selection and won’t have to commit to a ream of 500 of a particular color cardstock from an office supply store.
If your comic is over 24 pages you might want to look into getting it trimmed with an industrial trimmer once fully assembled at a print shop because the edges will be uneven due to the thickness and in my experience they tend to cut kinda wonky on a swing-arm cutter because of their thickness.
Anyway, printing and making books yourself is a fun! It’ll cost you a bit up front but most of the supplies (stapler, trimmer, etc.) will last you forever. You can always pay to get them made for you, especially if a lot of your stuff is color which can be expensive to print, but I find it to be a lot cheaper in the long run to make them on your own. Also you get to have a neat little book you can point at and say you made all on your own, which (at least for me) gives a great feeling of accomplishment.
If there is anything in particular you want info about that I didn’t cover in this long-winded ramble please let me know! Good luck and happy mini making!
