I was reminded of the power of eye contact this morning when I watched a video that a friend shared. It sparked thoughts about marginalized and less privileged people. It made me think about how unseen so many people feel, how many untold stories there are and how much time we spend in our own worlds, maybe even without realizing it. So much of our lives are spent telling ourselves stories about what we are doing, what we think, how we feel, what we want. We become so self involved that we forget there are other stories to be heard. It made me wonder what it would be like to be homeless, a refugee, or simply alone, to experience life from a completely alternative perspective, to have a story that nobody was hearing. It made me think of how easy it is to tell my tale from where I currently am and it challenged me to imagine how I could share that story without a voice, without a platform, without already being seen. I thought of the many signs I've passed by, the ones grasped tightly by chilled fingers and hungry bodies. The ones that try to tell you there is something happening, that there is something someone is trying to say, something that is nearly impossible to hear because those words are silent in contrast to the sirens of strife within our own lives. I thought, maybe, just maybe, communication works better if it is more honest, used fewer words and came from common ground. I stretched my mind, questioning what it is that I have that is the same as everyone else? Then it came to me. I have a story. You have a story. We all have stories. What if, rather than trying to convince you that my story is real and valid, I let the truth of my story speak instead. The truth being that I have a story. I told my boss the story of "August 10, 2016" yesterday. I finally let them know just how much their actions on that day really bullied me and made me hold a grudge. It was pretty glorious. I'm proud of myself for speaking out. I might even do a vlog about it. Behind closed doors I didn't hold back details of what exactly they did that day. I pointed at them and I didn't let them cut me off until I was done. They went silent. They asked why hadn't I talked about this before? I said, pointing at the door towards my desk, "Because, Monica was scared of her new boss and scared of losing her job because her boss keeps talking about terminating her and saying she's not good enough. Monica was holding this and waited for more proof of your terrible management before she reports you to HR. But as it turns out, there was no other incidences quite this bad yet so I kept it to myself. There are other smaller incidences like this. I'm telling you now because you challenged me to give you examples of when you mistreated me. Here you go. " They apologized when it hit them just how bad they were. They said nobody ever told them about how they talked. They will think about their actions. This happened because we were talking about something serious and there was a point they claimed they weren't ever singling me out. A switch flipped and I questioned, "oh, you really think you haven't been?" To which they said, "give me examples. When have I mistreated you?" I didn't miss a beat. "On August 10, 2016..." I have some co-workers on fb. I love you guys, you are the reason I come to work. Besides the paycheck that is.. didn't used to be that way. I even told my boss that with everything going on, don't be surprised if I get terminated or tell you myself I quit. Being transparent is really nice I'm discovering. I don't need to chase squirrels in my head about "oh I wish I could say that" or "hush, I shouldn't say that" or "I'm better than that"- because I am saying it. I am letting myself be human and have emotions. Feels f*cking awesome.

I haven't really ever liked sharing my story, how my childhood shaped who I am, why I am a fighter, why I literally got songs I use as theme songs, why I am ferocious when it comes to protecting my babies, etc. I've dealt with abuse (physical, mental, and sexual), I've had ups and lots of downs, I love to listen to people, and not do alot of sharing. When all is not right in the world, it’s nice to see there are things that don’t rely on your money, clothes, disabilities, your politics, religion, your biology, and your social status… .
