A new nicer carding knife. I accidentally almost bought a left-handed one but the vendor caught it. They were actually out of right handed ones, but he sold me the display one.

Tom bought me a tether for my grooming table that attaches to the pole and helps the dog face forward, for when better control is needed. I guess he's sick of holding Arthur's head for me lol.

I like this scene as an animation as it feels it is a very important moment to the film and the character, Mirabel, this is the character realising that despite being born into the family she is not seen as an equal to any of her family members and is an outsider for something she cannot control.

The scene is her, quite literally, wishing on the miracle that made her family special but some reason didn't have her obviously special, though it is shown later she is special in her own way and what the family needs more than any magical gift.

Animation wise, I love the way Disney have done the skirts as this was the thing that amazed me most, the way that they have created them so naturally looking and the way they flow, as well as the hair and the steps they had to do to get to be able to animate all the different hair types. I also enjoyed the fire works and the natural look to the animation but the hair and the skirts were my favourite

Hair

To create the unique hair that appears in Disney’s Encnato (2021) Disney took previous programs and techniques, such as ‘I-groom’ that was first used in Bolt and ‘Quick silver’ first used in Moana, and techniques used and created for Tangled, the combination allowed for a variety of curls to be made and represented.

Using the s shape curl and the hair shading in Moana allowed for the hair colours and shading to be improved and for the programmers and animators to be able to develop the different types of coils by building upon the s curl. At that point Disney hadn't yet worked on helical coils, the improvement of these programs is significant because it allowed Disney to represent all types of hair curls from 1A to 4C. Mirabel, the main character had type three ringlets which were tighter in more places than others; animators then also focused on the curl direction and how the strands all reacted to each other, making sure nothing was symmetrical yet all kept its flow and shape.

The Nexus of Art and Science

In every film Disney creates they are always trying to push the limits of the technology available to help them create believable stories. This need to push the boundaries was very prevalent in Disney’s 2016 film Zootopia. When Director Bryant wanted to make a movie about talking animals in a world inhabited with hundreds of different creatures the team knew they wanted to do it right. From the largest of elephants to the hairs on the tiniest mouse. While developing the look of the movie they needed to do research, specifically on how to make the fur believable.

Disney and Pixar are know for doing extensive research before diving head first into any project. This process was repeated when starting Zootopia. Right away the need to have realistic fur was of top priority for the films team. This meant getting the best reference possible. They spent around eight months figuring out how the different types of fur on each animal was effected by the light around them. This pushed the software team at Disney to not only improve software they already had but also create a new one.

At Disney Animation they use an application called Hyperion for rendering scenes. Hyperion uses a way to follow light called path tracing. Just as the name suggest the path a light ray would take is traced around a scene until it hits the camera. This kind of path tracing was first used in Big Hero 6 but when trying to trace the path of light through a furry mammal that can take a lot of time. Time, which the production team did not have considering the film had been in development for around five years. To combat this engineers went ahead and get the average amount of hair per animal and plugged in the average amount of scattering that would occur when light passes through the fur. By finding the average they were able to tell Hyperion when to stop tracing the light around once it hit the maximum number.

Now when creating the models for all the animal characters each had a specific amount of hair strands on them. The main characters Judy (a rabbit) and Nick (a fox), each had over 2 million hair follicle. Meanwhile a giraffe averaged 9 million hairs and a tiny rodent was over 400,000. Image having to animate all those hair individually, that would take even longer then rendering that fur. How Disney fixed this was by adapting an old software they had called XGen to get better control on the hair movement and patterns. To give each animal their own distinct pattern they brought back iGroom, a tool that is apart of XGen in order to have better control when adding hair to the animals. iGroom allowed for groups of hair to be moved at once, instead of the individual strands, to create longer or shorter hair follicles.

With all of these great advancements in animation technology it does not just help the look of the movie when striving to have the fur believable all of these advancements were created to help the story. Everything the Zootopia team did in research all the way to development was to tell the story in the best way to convey the message of the film, a message about bias and prejudices we experience in our daily lives even if we are not aware of it. As stated in the beginning Zootopia was released May 2016, right from the start many Americans could tell 20106 was going to be a charged year. By the time the film was officially released talk about racism in America was being discussed on the local news daily with protest sprouting up all around the country. The timing of the films release could not have been more perfect. It was a great coincidence that while adults were having conversations about their own biases toward other groups children were able to see it in a digestible way for them. Disney is well known for being a culture influencer and Zootopia was able to solidify that statement. By putting in the time and caring about the story the Zootopia team was able to tell a very personal story that related to real life on such a great scale. Everyone who saw the movie was able to take pieces from it and apply to their daily lives.

Disney has always been a pioneer when it comes to creating new technology to tell stories with. From the very first animated film they all the way to the present every advancement has helped Disney tell better and better stories. For Zootopia they advanced their work with animal fur to make them truly believable for the audience to relate with. When tackling a topic as heavy as ingrained prejudice and bias not only does the animation need to be able to give the best performance but also the story needs to be clear and well defined. Those 8 months of fur research at zoos and natural history museums were put to good use in advancing the needed programs for the film to look its absolute best.

Best Animator of 2016

When we start talking about the best animator of the year 2016 we can’t move ahead without taking a look at the best animated film, “Zootopia”. Byron Howard recently won the best animator ward in the Oscars for his immensely successful film Zootopia. Two more animators Jim Reardon and Rich Moore won alongside him for this film. The animators for this film created immensely impressive pieces of work in terms of characters and film’s sequential shots.

In addition to this, the studio's IT engineers developed the fur-controlling software iGroom, which gave character designers precise control over the brushing, shaping and shading of fur and made it possible to create a variety of eccentric character styles for each animal. Byron Howard’s work has set standards for any individual who wants to learn animation and become a skilled animator. The software was also able to control an unseen "imaginary" under layer that gave fur a degree of plushness not seen before.

This feature was used to create characters like Officer Clawhauser, who has a big head that is entirely made of spotted fur. Characters with noteworthy numbers of strands of hair or fur included both of the two lead characters, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, who each had around 2.5 million hairs; a giraffe with nine million strands of fur; a gerbil with 480,000 strands; and a rodent with more strands of hair than the 400,000 that were on Elsa's head in Frozen.

The animator for this film has surely put in tons of efforts for the characterization and specifications of the film. In addition to this, Zootopia was appreciated by audiences all across the globe. People of all age groups appreciated this film. The entire film worked out perfectly under the guidance of these talented animators. If you take a closer look at the work of these animators, you will get to understand the fine details of the animation work.

The development of the animation of all these different characters really worked out in an excellent manner which presented the film in this spectacular form. It surely is a factor that an animated film is not just a work of animators but it also includes the work of the entire studio team which is behind the making of this film.
