⁣ Canon Powershot SX730 HS ⁣ Taken on 16/04/2017.⁣ ⁣ Gradisca d'Isonzo is one of the 13 villages to be classified among "i borghi più belli d'Italia" ("the most beautiful villages in Italy") in the northeastern region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.⁣ ⁣ It is a 15th-Century fortress built on the right bank of the River Isonzo (also known as the River Soča in Slovenian) by the Venetians with the contribution of Leonardo Da Vinci to face the Turkish invasions. Thanks to this means of defence, Gradisca d'Isonzo has an elegant, well-preserved historical centre that was governed by four different populations over the last few centuries: the Venetians in the 15th Century, the Austrians in the 17th Century, the Habsburgs in the 19th Century, and the Italians since the 20th Century.⁣ ⁣ Strolling around the six stone bastions that served to protect the castle and then wandering through the quiet, romantic alleys and marvelling at the many noble palaces in the medieval core of the village, I was blown away by Gradisca d'Isonzo's remarkable architectural heritage.⁣ ⁣ The baroque façades of certain buildings and the characteristic wide streets that crossed at right angles to each other (reflecting the movements of the soldiers to defend the old city) left a very vivid historical impression on me.⁣ ⁣ Hop on a bus ('SAF') on the Udine–Palmanova–Gradisca line and explore the medieval past of this charming village. ⁣ ______________________________________⁣ ⁣ #ig_gorizia #fvgphoto #fvglive #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #igpic_friuliveneziagiulia #friuliveneziagiulia_love #gradiscadisonzo #borghipiubelliditalia #borghiitaliani #borghiditalia #flashbackfriday #ig_italia #yallersitalia #bestdestinations #beautifulplaces #living_destinations #neverstopexploring #italy_illife #huntgramitaly #moodygrams #italianonsiferma #ripartiamoitalia #viaggiamoinitalia #estateitaliana #vivereilborgo #cnntravel (at Gradisca d'Isonzo) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBVWY9SIkdS/?igshid=xq1j36z51gg4

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 14/04/2017. Situated at the eastern tip of the lagoon of Grado, about 5km from the town, is "l'Isola di Barbana" ("Barbana Island"), a wonderful island that is an important religious destination thanks to its iconic sanctuary dating back to the 6th century. This ancient Marian shrine (dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary) was built in order to preserve a holy image of the Virgin Mary carried in by the sea and found at the foot of an elm following a fierce storm. At that time, the religious site was part of the mainland since the lagoon of Grado wasn't formed until about the 7th century. The current, modern church is the one you can see in the first photo. It was built in the Romanesque style in the 1930s and has a strikingly original interior decorated in frescoes and luminous stained-glass windows. You can see this for yourself in the second photo by swiping left ⬅️. At the back wall of the church you can also observe hand-drawn pictures of accidents survived by local congregants, offering a fascinating historical snapshot of local dangers dating back to the late 19th century. With it being an important pilgrimage destination – much like the lesser-known sanctuary of Castelmonte that I posted yesterday – the Island of Barbana has a regular boat service leaving from the canal in Grado ('Canale della Schiusa'). The journey takes about 20 minutes; I found it a wonderful way to relax from all the walking I'd done around the island of Grado and to see it from a different perspective. You can find out whether the ferries are running on the website www.grado.it. As I've said quite a few times already: Friuli Venezia Giulia boasts such a variety of different landscapes! ________________________________________ #island #landscapephotography #paesaggiitaliani #ig_gorizia #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #treasureitaly #igersfvg #friuliveneziagiulia #fvglive #ig_italia #yallersitalia #traveldiaries #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #forbestravelguide #throwbackthursday #italy_illife #thehub_italia #raw_italy #santuario #isoladibarbana #hiddengem #prettylittleitaly #browsingitaly #picoftheday #instagood #travelgramitalia (at Barbana) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_UuesbIcQ-/?igshid=ckoe8w3raess

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 14/04/2017. Heading further eastwards past the provinces of Pordenone and Udine, we come to Gorizia, a province located in the southeast of Friulia Venezia Giulia bordering Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea. It's the second smallest province in the region, yet it embraces remarkably diverse environments and landscapes. What you absolutely can't afford to miss is Gorizia's coastline dominated by the wonderful Grado lagoon with its golden beaches and charming canals gliding among the islands and islets. On one of these islands, situated between the lagoon and the sea, is an ancient, elegant town called... Grado! It was one of my favourite places to visit during my Easter trip around Friuli Venezia Giulia. I was struck by the old centre of Grado with its 'campi' (small or large picturesque squares) and 'calli' (streets paved with stone slabs that often lead to dead-ends like a maze). Both features are typical in Venice — that's why Grado is known as a 'little Venice'. And what made Grado unique for me was how short a distance it was to get from the lagoon laden with quiet fishing boats to the open sea; it's just a stone's throw from the old town where you can enjoy the splendid seaside, soak in the sun and take in the fresh sea air. Don't forget to visit the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie –the oldest church in Grado – that's rich in fascinating decorations and historical mosaics. To get to Grado, take a bus from Udine ('SAF'). It's quite a long ride, so why not stop at other beautiful towns and villages like Strassoldo (considered one of Italy's prettiest villages), Palmanova (an example of a star fort of the late Renaissance) or Aquileia (an artistic and historical treasure trove). 🤔 ________________________________________ #grado #ig_gorizia #friuliveneziagiulia #igersfvg #italia #igersitalia #italy #ilikeitaly #italycomestoyou #viaggiainitalia #beautifulmatters #architecture #mosaics #fvglive #fvg #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #ig_italia #yallersitalia #socality #italy_ig #italy_illife #click_vision #travelphotography #throwbackthursday #total_italy #theprettycities #raw_italy #cnntravel #bbctravel (at Grado, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_UWNEAIQu0/?igshid=1rlgslqd4tx54
