Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 02/11/2019. Established only in 1963 and given special status as one of Italy's five semi-autonomous regions, Friuli-Venezia Giulia quite peculiar. Just look at its name: 'Friuli' is a corruption of the ancient name for modern-day Cividale, 'Foro Iulii' (Forum of Julius), while 'Venezia Giulia' stems from 'Julian Venetia' and also references the area's abiding association with Caesar. What makes Friuli-Venezia Giulia unique is its close proximity to Austria to the north and Slovenia to the east, meaning the Slavic, Germanic and Italian populations live in harmony and are all fiercely proud of their region as well as the local language, Friuliano. This linguistic variety goes hand in hand with the area's varied landscapes, with one-half Alps, about one-third limestone plateau called Carso, and the rest alluvial and gravel plains sloping down to the Adriatic. If you want to experience this multicultural melting pot, head to Lago del Predil (Predil Lake), not that far from Tarvisio in Italy, Arnoldstein in Austria and the Naravni spomenik Predilnica National Park in Slovenia. At an altitude of 969 metres, the lake lies quite high up and an ideal escape from high temperatures during the summer months. Legend has it that there once used to be a village on the lake. One night, a woman and her child went there to ask for shelter. Nobody except a poor family puts them up. Next morning, the whole village was submerged apart from the house of the hospitable family, though the woman and her son had disappeared. This photo doesn't do the lake and the surrounding forest justice, but at least we get an idea of how secluded it is despite its proximity to the Austrian and Slovenian borders. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: Take a bus from Tarvisio to Predil with 'SAF'. ______________________________________ #LagodelPredil #FriuliVeneziaGiulia #FriuliDaScoprire #TurismoFVG #ThrowbackThursday #Mountain_World #FriuliLovers #Italia #Italy #NatGeoLandscape #LandscapePhotography #Autumn #Autunno #Jesen #IgersFriuli #Ig_Friuli_VG #IgersFVG #FVGPhoto #FVGLive #Friuli #InstaFriuli #VolgoFVG #SomewhereFVG #ViaggiareFVG (at Lago del Predil) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIDj0qNlZbx/?igshid=1nzd0ixlddbex

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 12/04/2017. Northwest of Udine is Fagagna that rises on a hill offering beautiful views of the surrounding hills and plain. The castle, which today is little more than a ruin, stands on a site that has been inhabited since Roman times, although the first official documentation dates back to the patriarchal period in 983 AD. You can imagine, then, that this village – classified as one of the prettiest in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region – used to be full of ancient fortifications. Only a few elements have survived to the present day but are nonetheless worth visiting, including fragments of the city walls, the castle gate, the castle tower bearing a clock (known as the 'Clock Tower'), and the church of San Michele Arcangelo. Furthermore, Fagagna is home to a number of events which attract visitors far and wide, the most famous of which is 'Corsa degli Asini' ('Donkey Race') which is held on the first Sunday of September and has been taking place since 1891. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: Fagagna can be arrived at by bus ('SAF') from Udine on the Udine–San Daniele line every day of the week. Bear in mind that there are far fewer bus services running on Sundays and festive breaks. Tickets can be bought on the bus or at Udine bus station. Timetables can be downloaded from saf.ud.it. ______________________________________ #ig_udine #fagagna #throwbackthursday #borghiditalia #borghiitaliani #borghi_world #borghi_photogroup #borghidavisitare #borgodeiborghi #friuliveneziagiulia #fvglive #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #friuliveneziagiulia_cartoline #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #ig_italia #yallersitalia #borghi_cartoline #alluring_villages #natgeophotos #divine_villages #exploremore #divine_dolcevita #italy_illife #italianvillages #wonderful_places #shotz_of_friuliveneziagiulia #treasureitaly (at Fagagna) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB3fw-roqp8/?igshid=bd6sjmmyvr1c

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 16/04/2017. Gradisca d'Isonzo is one of the 13 villages to be classified among "i borghi più belli d'Italia" ("the most beautiful villages in Italy") in the northeastern region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is a 15th-Century fortress built on the right bank of the River Isonzo (also known as the River Soča in Slovenian) by the Venetians with the contribution of Leonardo Da Vinci to face the Turkish invasions. Thanks to this means of defence, Gradisca d'Isonzo has an elegant, well-preserved historical centre that was governed by four different populations over the last few centuries: the Venetians in the 15th Century, the Austrians in the 17th Century, the Habsburgs in the 19th Century, and the Italians since the 20th Century. Strolling around the six stone bastions that served to protect the castle and then wandering through the quiet, romantic alleys and marvelling at the many noble palaces in the medieval core of the village, I was blown away by Gradisca d'Isonzo's remarkable architectural heritage. The baroque façades of certain buildings and the characteristic wide streets that crossed at right angles to each other (reflecting the movements of the soldiers to defend the old city) left a very vivid historical impression on me. Hop on a bus ('SAF') on the Udine–Palmanova–Gradisca line and explore the medieval past of this charming village. ______________________________________ #ig_gorizia #fvgphoto #fvglive #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #igpic_friuliveneziagiulia #friuliveneziagiulia_love #gradiscadisonzo #borghipiubelliditalia #borghiitaliani #borghiditalia #flashbackfriday #ig_italia #yallersitalia #bestdestinations #beautifulplaces #living_destinations #neverstopexploring #italy_illife #huntgramitaly #moodygrams #italianonsiferma #ripartiamoitalia #viaggiamoinitalia #estateitaliana #vivereilborgo #cnntravel (at Gradisca d'Isonzo) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBVWY9SIkdS/?igshid=xq1j36z51gg4

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 29/04/2017. Three years ago today, on my birthday, I visited Polcenigo, one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia" ("most beautiful villages in Italy") — and what birthday treat it was! Located on the slopes of the western Carnic Prealps, in a quiet region surrounded by a charming landscape and characterised by its renowned water springs, Polcenigo is without a doubt a wonderful place to be in. I'll never forget walking along the numerous small streams meandering through the village, marvelling at the rainbow of houses sitting on the riverside when I suddenly caught a glimpse of the medieval castle standing on top of hill and dominating the entire valley. The walk up to the castle was quite demanding but thoroughly rewarding as I enjoyed a bird's-eye view of the village and its idyllic setting. I was agreeably surprised to discover that the once important castle had been left in ruins, yet from afar it looked intact. In addition, this charming village is home to a series of 16th-century stately homes, some decorated with graceful columns, light windows and fine arches. Then there are fascinating churches dotted about, like that of San Giacomo Apostolo with its strikingly tall bell tower. Expect to find many of these in Friuli Venezia Giulia! To sum up, thanks to its unique combination of historical, artistic and natural features, Polcenigo was an unforgettable birthday trip for me. You can explore it too by taking a bus ('ATAP', line 33). Depending on the weather and timing, you could also make a stop at the river town of Sacile, which is known as the "Garden of the Serenissima" and can be reached on the same bus line as Polcenigo. Really worth visiting! ________________________________________ #ig_pordenone #polcenigo #borghipiubelliditalia #borghiitaliani #borghiditalia #alluring_villages #italianvillages #divine_villages #kings_villages #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #ig_italia #yallersitalia #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #fvg #fvglive #italy_illife #friuliveneziagiulia #igersitalia #igersfvg #passionpassport #traveldrops #tv_living #living_destinations #blastfromthepast #natgeo #bellaitalia #lonelyplanet (at Polcenigo) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_jx_xwo3UB/?igshid=18pr0f78ugnlp

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 17/04/2017. A 'sofa trip' around the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia wouldn't be complete without a post of one of Italy's best art cities: Trieste. Located in the extreme northeast of Italy, Trieste sat on what was a contested border for centuries where diverse populations settled, thanks to which the city boasts elegant and historic masterpieces. It is also home to heritage cafés which helped spread the coffee culture across Europe. So it could be Trieste that put the coffee coffee in your cup! There is so much to say about this historical city, and I know I'll revisit it in the (hopefully) not too distant future. But one landmark that really stood out for me was Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia, an elegant rectangular square hosting beautiful buildings built in the Viennese Neoclassical style, as you can see in the last photo of the city's municipal building. In addition, this square used to be the seaport of the Austrian–Hungarian empire in the 18th century and is now said to be one of the largest squares in Europe that sits on the sea. And with its evocative panorama that overlooks the gulf one side, Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia is the symbolic image and the beating heart of Trieste. I felt incredible lucky to have captured a moody sky at sunset as I was walking back down from San Giusto Castle, a 15th-century fortress that stands on a hill that overlooks the city — highly recommended! Trieste is the regional capital of Friuli Venezia Giulia, so it only seems fitting to finish my posts of this unheralded and underrated region for this week. But don't worry — I'll still be posting more of my trips there from time to time! Give this region a chance and I'm sure you won't want to leave! 👋 ________________________________________ #ig_trieste #trieste #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #sunset #travelphotography #friuliveneziagiulia #fvg #fvglive #ig_italia #yallersitalia #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #city #moodysky #beautifulmatters #wonderful_places #theprettycities #cntraveler #natgeotravel #iorestoacasa #booking #expedia #bbctravel #lonelyplanet #italy_illife #friuli_bestsunset #treasureitaly #madeinitaly (at Trieste, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_chAuuI9vJ/?igshid=1x3d25lqklpll

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 14/04/2017. Italy, as well as China, has the highest number of World Heritage Sites with 55 entries. Some of these have been tourist magnets like the Historic Centres of Rome, Florence and Naples; the Duomo and Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the Amalfi Coast and the Cinque Terre. But some are under-the-radar destinations — one of which is in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Aquileia (also spelled Aquileja) is an immense archaeological site just 10km from the Adriatic Sea. It was one of the largest and wealthiest cities of the Early Roman Empire and was a major trading centre linking the the Mediterranean to Central Europe. The archaeological remains of the once wonderful public buildings and private residences can still be seen today if you wander around the site. The symbol of Aquileia has to be the 'Basilica Patriarcale' ('Patriarchal Basilica') that you can see in the first photo. Completed in 1031, it is an impressive work of religious architecture that has magnificent 4th-century mosaics — scroll left and be amazed! Incredibly, the floor mosaic wasn't discovered until the beginning of the 1900s when the flooring that had been laid in for centuries was removed. It is breathtaking to see that the Basilica and Baptistry have been preserved well despite the Barbarian invasions and earthquakes over the centuries — but don't forget to delve down and visit the 'Cripta degli Affreschi' ('Crypt of Frescoes') that holds Byzantine-style frescoes from the 1100s. The paintings were absolutely amazing to look at that I just had to include some of them in this photo set. And to think this historical and artistic treasure trove doesn't pull in so many tourists! Just take a bus from Udine with 'SAF' on the Udine–Grado line! 🚍 ________________________________________ #aquileia #ig_udine #igersudine #myudine #udinetoday #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #igersitalia #igersfvg #friuliveneziagiulia #fvg #fvglive #ig_italia #yallersitalia #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #unesco #worldheritage #art #history #mosaics #discoveritaly #neverstopexploring #travelgramitalia #travelblogger #traveldrops #beautifulplaces #best_italiansites #madeinitaly (at Aquileja) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_b6mb7Ic5j/?igshid=pp4cleu2b19c

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 19/04/2017. Known as 'la città del mosaico' ('the city of mosaics') with a world-famous reputation for its production of decorative pavement and wall mosaics, as well as being home to the prestigious Mosaic School of Friuli, Spilimbergo undoubtedly deserves a visit. In 2017 during Easter and the long weekend break in May, I travelled up and down Friuli Venezia Giulia and I was constantly spellbound by the marvellous art and architecture — like a melting pot of different European cultures. And I have to say that Spilimbergo is one of the most interesting and beautiful art cities that this largely overlooked region has to offer. Swipe through my photos on this post to get an idea of how great and important a role art has played in this fascinating town. The intricate detail and colours of the frescoes that fill the town's cathedral and medieval palaces and churches will take your breath away. Friuli Venezia Giulia has such an efficient and well-connected rail and bus network that (you may have already noticed) I managed to visit Barcis, Poffabro and Spilimbergo all on the same day! Spilimbergo lies next to the Tagliamento river that divides Pordenone with the neighbouring province of Udine, which means it's an easy town to get to. Take line 18 for Pordenone–Spilimbergo or line 51 for Udine–Spilimbergo. Maniago is a great base for reaching towns dotted along the foot of mountains like Poffabro, Andreis and Barcis. So in terms of public transport, the region is right up there with Alto-Adige/Südtirol (South Tyrol) and Valle D'Aosta. So think twice before hiring a car — getting to grips with the wonders of public transport with careful planning is all the more thrilling. ________________________________________ #spilimbergo #ig_pordenone #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #architecture #art #frescoes #mosaics #mastergallery #friuliveneziagiulia #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #ig_italia #yallersitalia #gopro #discoverychannel #lonelyplanet #visititaly #italy_hidden_gems #theprettycities #oldtown #travelphotography #bellaitalia #instaitalia #ig_italia_borghiecitta #igersfvg #fvglive #gf_italy #vivofriuliveneziagiulia (at Spilimbergo, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_Z43Ppo3_c/?igshid=18x030p3zzozp

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 19/04/2017. The Valcellina is one of the most beautiful and spectacular nature reserves in Friuli Venezia Giulia and one of my most memorable bus journeys. I'd just left the charming medieval town of Andreis and on my way to Barcis I could see the deep canyons carved into the rocks and the crystal-clear water of the lake. It was a gorgeous sunny day, making the lake's unique emerald green colour brighter than it usually is. I remember being told by the bus driver that this stretch of road was historically very important because it used to be the only way to get from the plain of Pordenone to the mountains where the famous Dolomites lie. And yet there was hardly any traffic on this road. The lake of Barcis may be artificial, but it is framed by the lush woods of fir and beech trees, set right in the heart of the valley. I was lucky to have been there when there weren't any sport activities going on, as the lake is an ideal spot for playing sports from sailing, kayaking and canoeing to hovercrafting, paragliding and speedboat racing. Of course it's wonderful to see people practising outdoor activities, but in this pristine part of Pordenone all I yearned for was some peace and quiet. Thankfully, that's what I got! I couldn't help but admire the unspoilt scenery surrounding the lake, which was made easy for me thanks to the pedestrian path. It's worth following it all the way around so as not to miss even a glimpse of the stunning scenery. The town itself is also worth a visit with its marvellous mix of wooden and stone buildings. Take a bus (ATAP line 32) from Pordenone and see how Barcis is a fine example of the special relationship between humans and nature. ________________________________________ #barcis #valcellina #mountainscape #landscapephotography #lagodibarcis #lake #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #ig_pordenone #myitaly #pordenonewithlove #igersitalia #igersfvg #fvglive #fvg #friuliveneziagiulia #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #italycomestoyou #ig_italia #yallersitalia #mountainlife #mountainsarecalling #naturelovers #outdoorphotography #living_destinations #natgeolandscape #lonelyplanet #travelgramitalia (at Barcis) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_ZVGago02y/?igshid=12kqgizdfoq47

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 20/04/2017. Located in the western area of Friuli Venezia Giulia, bordering Veneto, is the province of Pordenone. Much like the rest of the region, this area crosses valleys, hills and flat lands, offering a wide variety of landscapes and striking scenery. Here, like elsewhere in the region, you can find charming small villages containing art treasures that combine the culture of Friuli with Venetian and Austrian influences. Very close to the provincial capital, Pordenone, is Porcia, small town that has a well-preserved, unspoilt historic centre. Dotted with invaluable religious and monumental palaces, I enjoyed immersing myself in this charming town and observing the awesome arcades from different perspectives: first walking down the centre of the streets, then walking back under the porticoes. One important landmark in Porcia is the Clock Tower that you can see in the first and last photo of the set. It was equipped with a drawbridge to get across the moat and thereby served to defend access to the town. Now it has a medieval layout with two clock faces to mark the entrance and exit of Porcia. Another important landmark is the castle, built in the 12th century, where the noble family of Porcia and Brugnera resided and ruled the town and surrounding lands for 8 centuries. Today it is a noble Renaissance-style manor house. Finally, there's the 16th-century Loggia, a term used in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia to denote the town hall. To get to Porcia, take an urban bus with 'ATAP' (lines 2, 4 and 5) from Pordenone. You can find out exactly where to catch the bus on www.atap.pn.it — or just ask 😀👌 ________________________________________ #ig_pordenone #porcia #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #italia #italy #theprettycities #ilikeitaly #friuliveneziagiulia #ig_friuli_vg #fvglive #fvg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #ig_italia #yallersitalia #italy_photolovers #travelgramitalia #italy_illife #italia_shotz #shotz_of_friuliveneziagiulia #loves_madeinitaly #italianonsiferma #ripartiamodallitalia #viaggiainitalia #travelphotography #pordenonewithlove #instadaily #instapicoftheday #natgeotravel #lonelyplanet (at Porcia, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_XLyqjI3Yl/?igshid=s2w55tpzf1iy

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 17/04/2017. Situated towards the end of a narrow strip of land in the southeastern part of Friuli Venezia Giulia is the province of Trieste, an amazing area that is famous for its historical treasures, artworks and its middle-European character. And on the very edge of this province, just when the Italian coast seems to fold up, is a quaint seaside town called Muggia. Only 4km from the Slovenian border and 30km from Croatia, Muggia is the only Italian port town in Istria — the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. It goes without saying that the architecture in Muggia is marked by Venetian and Austrian history given its geographical position. And, like Grado, Muggia is complete with 'calli' (typical narrow streets influenced by the Venetians) and 'campielli' (small Venetian squares), making the town a source of surprises for its visitors, like me. Upon arriving in Muggia, I was immediately struck by its charming Venetian atmosphere, the 12th-century majestic cathedral in the historical centre, and the colourful houses encircling the pretty harbour. Unsurprisingly, Muggia is a renowned tourist resort, perfect for a relaxing beach holiday. I was pleasantly surprised, though, that there were hardly any Italian tourists in this lovely town. I'd recommend spending time in a wonderful square called Piazza Marconi, the beating heart of Muggia, and walking up to the 14th-century town castle, which has been renovated several times of the centuries but still dominates the ancient walls around the town to this day. To get to this border town, just take a bus from Trieste Centrale station or Piazza Foraggi (in Trieste) with 'Trieste Trasporti' line 20. Enjoy the ride! 🚎 ________________________________________ #ig_trieste #ig_italia #yallersitalia #italytrip #travelawesome #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #friuliveneziagiulia #fvg #muggia #fvglive #travelwriter #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #bestdestinations #wonderful_places #italy_illife #italy_hidden_gems #gf_italy #doyoutravel #finditliveit #welivetoexplore #cntraveler #iamatraveler #solotravel #travelwriter #adventuretravel #theprettycities #browsingitaly (at Múggia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_W1-iLoxwt/?igshid=g01ikyl0cgam

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 14/04/2017. Situated at the eastern tip of the lagoon of Grado, about 5km from the town, is "l'Isola di Barbana" ("Barbana Island"), a wonderful island that is an important religious destination thanks to its iconic sanctuary dating back to the 6th century. This ancient Marian shrine (dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary) was built in order to preserve a holy image of the Virgin Mary carried in by the sea and found at the foot of an elm following a fierce storm. At that time, the religious site was part of the mainland since the lagoon of Grado wasn't formed until about the 7th century. The current, modern church is the one you can see in the first photo. It was built in the Romanesque style in the 1930s and has a strikingly original interior decorated in frescoes and luminous stained-glass windows. You can see this for yourself in the second photo by swiping left ⬅️. At the back wall of the church you can also observe hand-drawn pictures of accidents survived by local congregants, offering a fascinating historical snapshot of local dangers dating back to the late 19th century. With it being an important pilgrimage destination – much like the lesser-known sanctuary of Castelmonte that I posted yesterday – the Island of Barbana has a regular boat service leaving from the canal in Grado ('Canale della Schiusa'). The journey takes about 20 minutes; I found it a wonderful way to relax from all the walking I'd done around the island of Grado and to see it from a different perspective. You can find out whether the ferries are running on the website www.grado.it. As I've said quite a few times already: Friuli Venezia Giulia boasts such a variety of different landscapes! ________________________________________ #island #landscapephotography #paesaggiitaliani #ig_gorizia #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #treasureitaly #igersfvg #friuliveneziagiulia #fvglive #ig_italia #yallersitalia #traveldiaries #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #forbestravelguide #throwbackthursday #italy_illife #thehub_italia #raw_italy #santuario #isoladibarbana #hiddengem #prettylittleitaly #browsingitaly #picoftheday #instagood #travelgramitalia (at Barbana) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_UuesbIcQ-/?igshid=ckoe8w3raess

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 14/04/2017. Heading further eastwards past the provinces of Pordenone and Udine, we come to Gorizia, a province located in the southeast of Friulia Venezia Giulia bordering Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea. It's the second smallest province in the region, yet it embraces remarkably diverse environments and landscapes. What you absolutely can't afford to miss is Gorizia's coastline dominated by the wonderful Grado lagoon with its golden beaches and charming canals gliding among the islands and islets. On one of these islands, situated between the lagoon and the sea, is an ancient, elegant town called... Grado! It was one of my favourite places to visit during my Easter trip around Friuli Venezia Giulia. I was struck by the old centre of Grado with its 'campi' (small or large picturesque squares) and 'calli' (streets paved with stone slabs that often lead to dead-ends like a maze). Both features are typical in Venice — that's why Grado is known as a 'little Venice'. And what made Grado unique for me was how short a distance it was to get from the lagoon laden with quiet fishing boats to the open sea; it's just a stone's throw from the old town where you can enjoy the splendid seaside, soak in the sun and take in the fresh sea air. Don't forget to visit the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie –the oldest church in Grado – that's rich in fascinating decorations and historical mosaics. To get to Grado, take a bus from Udine ('SAF'). It's quite a long ride, so why not stop at other beautiful towns and villages like Strassoldo (considered one of Italy's prettiest villages), Palmanova (an example of a star fort of the late Renaissance) or Aquileia (an artistic and historical treasure trove). 🤔 ________________________________________ #grado #ig_gorizia #friuliveneziagiulia #igersfvg #italia #igersitalia #italy #ilikeitaly #italycomestoyou #viaggiainitalia #beautifulmatters #architecture #mosaics #fvglive #fvg #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #ig_italia #yallersitalia #socality #italy_ig #italy_illife #click_vision #travelphotography #throwbackthursday #total_italy #theprettycities #raw_italy #cnntravel #bbctravel (at Grado, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_UWNEAIQu0/?igshid=1rlgslqd4tx54

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 15/04/2017. The way I see it, there are two types of itineraries: the meticulous and the spontaneous. I like to think that mine are the former, though over the years I've learnt to make room for the unexpected. That can be said for the small ancient hamlet of Castelmonte, which I'm so glad I visited! Castelmonte, literally meaning 'castle on a hill', up to its name in a geographical sense, as you can see in the first and last photos of my post. But there isn't a castle; rather, there's a castle-like sanctuary – supposedly the oldest sanctuary in Northern Italy – that houses a 15th-century painted stone sculpture of the Virgin Mary. And in fact, the village still goes by the wordy name of 'Santuario della Beata Vergine di Castelmonte'. Small village, long name! Nestled in the Julian Alps at 618 metres above sea level and just 8km from the Slovenian border, Castelmonte is overshadowed by more touristy towns nearby like Cividale del Friuli that's easy to get to on the Udine–Slovenia SS54 state road. I thought that was reason enough for me to take a small minibus from Cividale, wind my way up the hairpin turns and reach a little-known territory. I only had an hour to visit Castelmonte, but that gave me just enough time. There's the 12th-century sanctuary I mentioned before that has its own story to tell: a former Roman outpost that subsequently became a sanctuary, survived wildfires in the 15th-century and miraculously survived nearly unscathed after a barrage of artillery from Germany during the Second World War. Apart from that, there are old castle gates that still remain intact. Take a bus from Udine or Cividale with 'SAF' and see this remarkable village! ________________________________________ #ig_udine #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #castelmonte #friuliveneziagiulia #friuli #fvglive #viaggiainitalia #ripartiamodallitalia #ig_italia #yallersitalia #volgoitalia #ig_friuli_vg #yallersfriuliveneziagiulia #volgofriuliveneziagiulia #travelgramitalia #bestintravel #treasureitaly #village #borghiditalia #borghidavisitare #rsa_outdoors #natgeotravel #lonelyplanet #doyoutravel #huntgramitaly #moodygrams #illgrammers #gramslayers (at Castelmonte, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_SHAhcouur/?igshid=oo4oq312uvp4
