Queer Indian Media: A Compilation

A couple of days ago, @impala124 sent @lurkingshan an ask about the lack of discussion about Queer Indian Media in fandom spaces. I wrote about it here, @neuroticbookworm here, and @waitmyturtles here (both of them have excellent points, I highly recommend you read their posts!). It's become quite apparent that people are willing to watch and engage in discourse about queer Indian media, it's just that the lack of popularity and accessibility makes it harder for people to start. So, I've decided to make a list tracking all of the queer Indian media I know of, and hopefully also any meta/discourse about it, which is an idea I've had floating in my head for months now.

This list is by no means comprehensive, so if you have recs, send them my way! Text me on DM, send an ask, tag me in your posts, whatever. And though it's not possible for me to watch everything on the list, I will be slowly going through as many of these as I can and writing about them, as well as hopefully finding more stuff and easier to access versions for the ones that are harder to access right now. This post is going to be a slow work in progress, but I'm hoping to update it regularly. So, if you'd like me to keep you updated, let me know through the tags/replies and I will tag you in future posts!

I've tagged the people who've recommended certain shows alongside each show. Everything on here is available online. The hyperlinked titles lead you to the media itself, meaning that it's available for free online with subtitles. Other details will be mentioned separately.

Disclaimer: The media I have watched/read have recommendation ratings (which will not always reflect my enjoyment of something, rather are based on how much I'd recommend it). While I did lightly screen everything on here, the criteria was 'has a trailer or otherwise showing queerness to be a central theme in the story' and 'is available online', so take that into account if you decide to pick something up, and definitely watch trailers and/or skim the wikipedia pages beforehand.

Recommendation: 5/10 A historical book set during the colonial era, the lesbian romance is mostly a subplot that loses its way towards the end. It's kind of a drag, but the history component is somewhat interesting.

Don't Let Him Know

Recommendation Rating: 7.5/10 with serious trigger warnings including rape. It's a brutally honest book designed to make the reader uncomfortable, so proceed with caution. I personally liked it quite a lot, but that's majorly because of how authentic the book felt.

Falling Into Place

Recommendation Rating: 8/10 A modern lesbian romance that follows similar beats to the typical thai bl/gl. A little underdeveloped in some places, but overall quite good.

summary: Robin convinces Steve to take a yoga class only to bail on him at the last minute.

an: I have like half of a smutty bit for this fic written but it felt kind of tacked on so I left it off. if enough people enjoy this I'll post that bit later. also thank you to @hellfirehottie420 for the yoga class idea and to @ozarkthedog for gassing me up and encouraging me to keep going when I wanted to give up! It's not a big fic but we celebrate little victories here. (divider by @/saradika)

an 2: the model in the moodboard is not representative of the reader insert. there's no physical descriptions in the fic. I just didn't want anyone giving me a hard time with that "fat people can't do yoga" shit. every body is a yoga body. thank you 😌

After Steve's marriage fell through he resigned himself to never doing that again. He made a mess of things the first time around anyway. And not knowing what a happy, stable marriage looked like growing up sure didn't help either.

So when things finally imploded he took it on the chin and vowed to be the best dad he could be. He wouldn't let his failed marriage take that away from him. Dating was off the table and for a long time casual hookups were too; it never felt like the right time.

Robin had insisted on him getting out there, doing something for himself that didn't involve kids or work. Steve used to have fun, he was the king of fun! Now he was sure he wouldn't know fun if it hit him in the face with a bat. And he sure as hell doesn't know how he let Robin talk him into taking a yoga class at the town rec center.

She was supposed to be here, to help ease him into having some semblance of a social life, but she bailed at the last minute blaming a mix up in her schedule.

"I forgot I already told Nance I'd take her out tonight. Just go! I'll come with you next week, I promise."

Steve sighed, standing outside the classroom doors with his hands on his hips. He can see a few people milling around, chatting and rolling out mats as he hesitates there in the hallway.

"It'll be fine. Just go in, stretch out some old joints and go home. Easy. Nothing to be afraid of. You're not afraid," Steve shook his head. Standing outside and talking to himself wasn’t a good look. Not with this mustache on his face.

He looked through the windowed doors and swallowed, "It's just a room full of women in spandex. You're not a creep, it's exercise, you're here to exercise."

"First time?"

Steve nearly jumps out of his skin when he sees you standing there smirking at him. Your eyebrows rise and you gesture to the rolled up mat under your arm when Steve takes a little too long to respond.

Shit, should he have brought his own mat?

"Yeah,” Steve croaks and you smile. “I mean, yes. This is the beginner's yoga class, right? My friend was supposed to do it with me but she bailed."

“Ah,” your smile falters a little but you nod and open the classroom doors leaving Steve to wonder what he said wrong.

"They have mats over there if you need one," you point to the stack on the other side of the room then introduce yourself. Steve knows he's staring at you like a hapless idiot but he successfully remembers to give you his name in return, along with an awkward handshake.

"Thank you," Steve doesn't want to let go of your hand, so warm and soft it's messing with his head. "Sorry, I'm, uh, I'm a little nervous. I haven't done anything like this since my 20s."

"What, exercise?"

Steve feels a twinge of pride at the way you glance down at his arm muscles. You furrow your brow and bite your lip and Steve knows you can tell by the way they swell under his short sleeves that you know that can't be true.

"No, I mean going out,” he shrugs, wiggling the mat in his arms, “trying something new."

"Ah," you nod your head and smile again and Steve wonders if you can hear how fast his heart's beating.

You're walking towards the front of the class now with your mat and Steve in tow, asking him what made him want to try yoga of all things. Steve admits his friend Robin had signed him up for the class and that he rarely gets out of the house these days.

“Oh, same,” you nod in understanding and Steve sighs in relief. “I’m so busy between work and going back to school that I barely have time for myself. The yoga studio is my happy place.”

Steve smiles and is about to ask you what you’re going to school for when he's stopped by the teacher suddenly clapping her hands together and calling for everyone to get settled so they can start.

"Can I?" Steve gestures at the spot next to you and you smile again.

"Absolutely."

The class passes in a sweaty blur. Steve thought he was in decent shape. He lifts weights in his garage at home, runs a few days a week, and generally takes care of his body. He was an athlete for god's sake, he's familiar with all that jazz. Nope. Steve nearly pulled a few muscles in his back he didn't know he had.

It also didn't help that the shorts he wore to class might've been a little too short. He hoped, for the sake of the woman behind him, that his thighs were the only things he was showing off during downward dog.

You, on the other hand, were a champ. Graceful in your movements and barely breaking a sweat. You admitted to him halfway through the class, as the teacher made her rounds correcting poses, that you usually took the more advanced class but liked to hop in on beginner class days as a refresher on basic poses.

"You're doing great!" You shoot Steve a thumbs up and he feels his face heat at your encouragement but sends a shaky thumbs up back.

Sweat lines his forehead and he pushes his flop of hair back when it falls in his face before moving on to the next pose. His glasses had slid down his face enough times that Steve stopped fussing with them and put them off to the side, but his hair he couldn't do anything about, unruly as it was.

He catches you watching him a few times, once in warrior pose when Steve accidently put the wrong foot forward and wound up facing the opposite direction as the rest of the class. The way you tried to hide your laugh when he pretended like he was surprised to see you there lit him up inside.

The next time he caught you was when he turned his head towards you while tucked in child's pose. It seemed like your eyes were on his legs, maybe checking to see if he was doing the pose right? When you realized he knew you were watching your eyes went wide. Steve smiled and you quickly turned your head back down to the mat. Maybe you weren't checking his form after all. Or maybe you were? Steve couldn’t wrap his head around it. Were you just being nice or had you been checking him out too?

As class wrapped up Steve rolled up his mat and thanked the teacher for her help, promising to not only come back next week but to bring a friend too. He couldn’t wait to make Robin suffer through an hour of this. And you, he had to thank you for making tonight one of the most enjoyable nights he'd had in a long time.

"So I'll see you next week?" You adjust your bag over your shoulder. Most of the rest of the class had left but you didn't look like you were in much of a rush.

"Yeah, I'd love to. I mean, I’ll be here. I had a lot of fun."

"Glad you tried something new?"

Steve swallows at your teasing smile, suddenly feeling like "something new" didn't mean yoga anymore. His eyes drifted down to the light sheen of sweat dotting your chest and he quickly pulled his gaze away.

"Definitely."

"Good," you nodded.

You were starting to walk away. Robin would kick his ass if he didn’t make a move.

"Hey! Uh," you turn around to see Steve reaching out for your arm before pulling his hand back. He stops and scratches the back of his head. "Do you, I mean, would you like to get coffee sometime? As a thank you for…y’know, helping me with my poses."

Steve smiles and hopes he doesn’t look like a dweeb when he fidgets and pushes up his glasses.

"Walk me back to my car?"

The corner of Steve's mouth tilts up and he motions for you to hand over your gym bag. Once it’s tucked into the crook of his arm he nods towards the door at the end of the hall.

"Ladies first."

"You looked like a lost puppy. But honestly, it wasn't the first time I've seen a man looking intimidated outside of a yoga studio."

Steve gapes at you as you laugh.

"I was...making sure I had the right room."

"Sure, big guy," you chuckled as you patted Steve's arm.

The two of you finally reach your car and you tap the unlock button but stop before opening the door.

“Thanks for walking me.”

“Of course. Wouldn’t want you out here by yourself this late at night.”

A group of teens on bikes ride past the rec center a moment later, probably on their way to the well-lit basketball court on the other side of the building where a few other kids are already playing.

“Mhm. All these ruffians around. Why, a girl just doesn’t feel safe ‘round these parts anymore,” you tease in a shy southern belle accent.

Steve chuckles and ducks his head. “You know what I mean.”

“I do. And I'm glad you came tonight."

“Me too.”

Steve found himself inching closer to you as your back pressed against your car. "So will you? Get coffee with me, that is?"

You looked up at him through your pretty lashes and Steve didn't care about his age or his creaky joints or his fear of fun. He wanted to find himself again in your eyes. If you'd let him.

"What about your friend? The woman that was supposed to come with you tonight?"

"Hmm? Oh, Robin? I think she'd say you could do better," Steve grimaced, shaking his head. "Her girlfriend would say the same thing."

"Oh," you laugh into your hand. "Gotcha."

"Why'd you ask?"

"No reason. Coffee sounds great," you whisper and lift your chin to press a kiss to Steve's stubbled jaw.

He stands there in the parking lot long after you gave him your number, hastily scribbled on the back of a receipt pulled from your purse, and drove away.

He has to call Robin.

Miguel had always been a ladies man. As the smartest man in Alchemax, Miguel always had to destress some way, shape or form. However, when you started working at Alchemax, Miguel felt like changing his ways.

You had wanted his attention, but Miguel knew that you deserved better than him.

Miguel had tried to push away each of your advances. Some were harder than others. As much as Miguel wanted to give in, he couldn't. You didn't deserve someone like him. The worst part was that Miguel could see you slowly losing your patience with him.

It hurt. Miguel wanted to reach for you as you just gave him a sad smile.

Miguel could feel the dry lump in his throat as you prepped yourself for a party. Part of him wanted to tell you to focus on your work. Part of him wanted to tell you not to go. He knew that some random guy was going to hit on you.

Everything felt out of place as Miguel danced beside you. He couldn't focus on the music, the lights, or anything. Miguel's attention was solely on you as you danced before him.

Your hands holding his as your hips swayed to the music. This was not the place Miguel wanted to be, but you were here. With a soft groan, Miguel leaned towards your touch.

Fall right back into your gaze Heaven sent for endless praise (meet me here in waiting) Everlasting cold embrace (under gold and bones) She's my final resting place (no solace for the taking)

Your smile brighten as you pulled Miguel aside. Miguel wasn't sure were you were taking him, but he didn't care. Your beautiful eyes piercing into his soul as the two of you stood alone on the club's balcony.

This was it.

Miguel knew that he couldn't hold himself back much longer. His hands stroking down your waist as you leaned closer to him. Miguel's lips felt dry. Needing to meet them against yours for much needed relief.

Your arms wrapped around his neck, causing Miguel to feel a shiver down his spine. Never had he felt this good. Pressing your body against the edge, Miguel groaned softly as his lips finally connected with yours.

Do you have reccs for "ugly" art (manga, comics, movie, etc.)? Thanks for the Tekkon recs btw I really liked it

That really depends on your own personal media landscape and what your definition of "ugly" is! As a random example, I've seen many people call ONE's art ugly because of the wobbly linework when I think it's lovely. Ugly could also mean something a bit shocking/crass in its themes. Etc, etc... I'm going to go with the definition of "something that's a bit jarring to look at or go through" here :)

Disclaimer: a lot of these tackle sensitive topics, sometimes for fun and not always tastefully. If there's themes you really can't handle in media, do your research before looking into them.

Manga

I keep recommending yes because it rules but Dorohedoro and its scratchy messy art and gore galore. talking about the manga exclusively here the anime is too polished for my taste

God's Child (Kami no Kodomo): tbh this one is for the art only I hated the writing. very gruesome & unique looking short story

I hesitate to recommend this one because it's edgy as hell but I shan't lie I had a lot of fun with Hellsing. it's "bad" in the same areas as something like berserk but unlike that one it does not take itself seriously

if you liked Tekkon i strongly suggest trying out more stuff by its author (saying this with immense biais). the most ugly/messy thing i've read of his, which isn't a lot because i find his work very delicate, is No. 5 which i would less describe as "good" than "very compelling to me". i also recommend this wonderful essay tearing it down

Comics (non JP)

FLEEP: a short story about a man who wakes up in a phone cabin seemingly encased in concrete. one of the comics i always recommend for its length and storytelling. (link leads to the artist's website where you can read it for free!)

The Astonishing Exploits Of Lucien Brindavoine: a young artist gets drafted in the first world war and goes through a series of almost supernatural adventures. beyond the adventure book aspect, a harsh criticism of nationalism/patriotism that's still awfully relevant

Animation

Ruben Brandt: Collector: a psychiatrist suffers from strange art related nightmares ruining his life. his clients, a bunch of high profile criminals, decide to help him fight off his demons by organizing one long vacation where they steal every painting involved. extremely unique visually, a fun heist movie with thriller elements.

Junk Head: goofy post apocalyptic movie about a man on a quest to save, who keeps losing sight his goal because cartoony violence episodes have his head tumble into new lows, literally. this is, perhaps, one of my favorite animated films ever, it's earnest and fun and lovingly crafted. very unique of a watch

The Apostle: freshly escaped from prison, a thief is on a mission to find treasure hidden by his old cellmate, and finds himself stuck in an ancient village who's strange looking elderly inhabitants are way too insistent on his stay. classic spooky folktale with its millennial curses and foreboding warnings, it's also a nice peek into the culture of Galicia and old world medieval weirdass catholicism. you can buy a DVD on their website

MKFZ: dumb as hell high adrenaline animated B movie with excellent animation. there's a plot about alien living undercover in fantasy california but you don't watch this kind of film for the plot. fair warning this is adapted from a french comic so of course, it's crass and racist

Blow to the Head - Lightning bolt: awesome music video (YT link)(warning for flashing/strobing lights if you're sensitive to that!)

Canon Fodder: from the Memories omnibus film. little slice of the life of a fantasy war obsessed industrial nation

with its new movie on the horizon, it's a great time to get into Mononoke, despite traditionally pretty visuals its got a unique style and gets pretty offputting

Live action cinema

7:35 in the morning: short film about the fear in improvised musical numbers where you don't expect any. it's on youtube in bad quality

The Draughtsman's Contract: an artist is hired by a Lady to draw several vistas of her house, in exchange for money, good drawing condition, and the Lady. follows a good hour of cunts in powdery wigs being awful to each other for their own gain. if you're into dark humor it's a good test, otherwise it has a really satisfying murder mystery to follow too.

Three Kings: during the gulf war, a group of US soldiers decide to steal Hussein's gold for themselves under the mighty standard of kuwait's loot repatriation. extremely caustic take on good ol murican international politics. i was shocked at how far it goes and it's express, low budget treatment which i did not expect from a hollywood film. the movie tires itself fast and becomes less good in its second half but the it's opening acts are interesting

Delicatessen: a sliver of humanity survives in an old timey stone building in the middle of nothingness on top of a functional butcher's shop. gossip follows the arrival of a new roommate. how does one even maintain a butchery in a no man's land? weird film with a unique(ly goofy) take on the post apocalyptic genre

Other

For traditional artists, I like the works of Beksinski (<3), Schiele, Giger. For modern artists Oleg Vdovenko (heavy gore warning for that one), Jeff Simpson

I'm less a fan of the MV and live performances they got infamous for than their music proper but I really like the band Cardiacs, who's judged by many of my friends to be extremely hard to get into lol.

The whole Thing with Qiu?????? Delicious. The Incident flashback was so good, u nailed the tension and the anxiety of the scene so well that I audibly yelled 'FUCK' when qiu's mom opened the door lol. Also I love the option to go on a long rant about how much MC loves qiu like thats a straight up marriage vow type stuff the MC said. ALSO THE REUNION SCENE???? QIU YOU HOT PIECE OF ASS YOU. Like, I was gonna say yes right away anyway honey but keep begging we love to see it 😌 also, also, the line:

"You can see [them] wonder how much to ask for, and you find yourself wondering how much to give."

IS MY FAVORITE LINE. HELLO??? THE HESITANCE??? I LOVE.

Fitness or Fatness

Ugh. I'm healthy, at least on paper. I'm in my 60's and don't require any meds to stay alive. I am a shining example of good luck and good genetics. It's certainly not because I am dedicated to fitness or diet. I mean, I try. I just don't try very hard. I eat healthy, but i am also a fan of tasty snacks. I walk for exercise, but not like I should.

Unfortunately, I am at an age where I really need to make some choices that will keep me healthy and mobile for a long time. Odds are that I'll get quite old (the women in my family live forever) and I want to be able to do the things I like. That's pretty much just gardening and shopping, I'm not trying to run marathons or anything, but still. Having said all of that, the mister and I drove over to Centreville today to check out the new YMCA. It's a big, beautiful facility that offers everything from water aerobics to kickboxing. There are plans in place for an outdoor pool as well. We toured the various sections, talked to the sweetest young woman about membership, and I think we're going to give it a whirl. After my ankle surgery a few years ago I used to water jog in the pool of our nearest rec center. It was such great exercise and so easy on my joints, a doctor recommended therapy. At the Y I'd be able to participate in water aerobics or just take an open lane and water jog. Not gonna' lie, the water aerobics appeal to me because the women in those classes are usually such fun. Potential friends? Back in Tennessee it was sure a fun group. now all I have to do is blow the dust off my swimsuits and see if I can still shove everything into place. I may need counseling afterward. The YMCA in Centerville is about 17 miles from our house - mostly through cornfields. This was a nice surprise during the drive. Sunflowers!

Aren't they beautiful? So cheerful. I hesitate to say that my gardens are trying to rally. I still have the world's healthiest tomato plant that has never produced fruit, but everything else is blooming and looking pretty (finally!). My pumpkin plants are thriving and I'm cautiously optimistic. I've just cursed myself, haven't I? At this point I'd sell my soul for one pretty pumpkin for the grandgirl to pick. Crossing my fingers. That's all my news for this Tuesday evening. Not much happens around here. We're on our sofas, watching the U.S. women's gymnastics team dominate at the Olympics. They're flying through the air and flipping and twisting, powered by sculpted muscle. I'm in my stretchy pants saying, "I think she stepped out on that landing..." Yep, might be time for me to get to the Y and build a little muscle myself. But first, a cookie... I hope you're doing something good for yourself. You deserve it, and you'll be glad you did. No one ever said they regretted making healthy choices. Taking care of your body doesn't mean worrying about pant size or numbers on a scale - it's about feeling good, moving well, and being strong. That's priceless. I don't need to have a snatched waist, I need to be able to hike to the Sacre Coeur in Paris. I don't need to be a size 2, I need to be able to run for a train with my bag. Living the life I want has nothing to do with my figure and everything to do with my health. Take this advice from an old crone, younger ladies - focus on what you want to do and not how you want to look. We live in a society determined to convince us that no matter how we look it is never quite good enough, so just ignore that. Sure, slap on your lipstick and a cute outfit, but anchor all of that with how you feel. All the makeup in the world can't compete with the glow of good health. I'll be honest, I haven't felt great since we moved here. Two years of feeling unwell, or just...not like myself. I blamed covid, I blamed menopause, I researched all sorts of supplements, I did everything except take care of myself. It shows. The good news is that it's not too late. I got sweaty on the treadmill this morning and felt better all day long. It truly is that simple, all we have to do is start. Sending out so much love tonight, I hope you feel it. Summary: On July 16, 2013, Regina Mills and her son Henry boarded Storybrooke Airlines Flight 815 from Orlando to New York. Robin Locksley boarded the same flight. During the flight, a moment of bad turbulence rattles the passengers. But it gets worse when they land and find out that they’ve somehow flown five years into the future.

Now the passengers must navigate a world that has moved on without them and find where they belong in it. While they started as strangers, Robin and Regina soon find themselves relying on each other as they try to figure out what happened to them. And as they do, they start to wonder if maybe it all happened for a reason.

Robin moved in with Regina. Her father was still wary of him as his first impression hadn't been the best but her son was thrilled to have Robin with them. Their experience on the plane and their stay at Stewart Air Base really bonded them all. And though David still played a role in Henry's life, Regina was glad he had another male figure to look up to.

He was also able to spend more time with Henry than David could for now. Robin only worked part time and when he wasn't working, he often took Henry to different places. Sometimes they went to the movies together, other times to the park, and sometimes to the rec center so Henry could play basketball. Robin also started to teach him how to play soccer and Henry had quickly picked it up, even considering playing it in the fall. Regina was glad to see him adjusting and being hopeful about something.

She also started to get to know Roland as well. Robin had him a couple afternoons a week and every Saturday. He was a sweet little boy and it seemed he felt freer to bond with his father now.

Robin had told her the whole story when he returned to her house after his meeting with Marian. Her heart had broken for him, thinking of the weeks lost with his son because of Mulan. She was not a fan of her or Marian, feeling both had treated Robin poorly - difficult and unprecedented situation understood. Watching Robin with Henry and then Roland, it was clear he was a natural father and Mulan had been wrong.

At least Marian was giving him time with his son. It was a start.

"Have you and Marian agreed on a therapist yet?" she asked him, sitting down on the couch as they watched TV together.

He nodded. "We're going to see Dr. Hopper. He already knows about what happened with the plane and so that's one hurdle already cleared."

"Dr. Hopper seems to be good," Regina replied. "I like going to him and I wasn't one for therapy before all of this."

"I never thought I'd be in therapy or need family counseling, but here we are," he said, sighing as he ran his hand over his hair. "Hopefully, he can help me make sense of all this."

She nodded, lowering the TV as she angled her body to face him. "Did you know that Marian had an interest in women?"

"Yes," he replied. "I actually met her through one of her ex-girlfriends. I told you I don't care that she's with a woman and I mean it. My problem isn't with who Mulan is but what she did."

"I didn't think so. I just thought that maybe if this was a side of herself that she had discovered while you were gone, maybe she had been hesitant to tell you that she wasn't exactly straight. It's hard to come out to people," she said, tucking some hair behind her ear as she thought about when she told her parents about her own sexuality.

Robin tilted his head as he studied her. "You're bi too?"

She nodded. "Though it's been a while since I dated a woman. My last two relationships were with men."

"Doesn't matter," he replied. "Or at least that's my understanding of it. You're bi no matter who you're dating."

"You're right. There are lots of people who don't seem to understand that," she said.

He shrugged. "Fuck them."

That caught her off-guard and she let out a little laugh. "What?"

"They don't want to understand so fuck them. They aren't worth any of your energy," he told her.

"You're right," she said, smiling. "I knew I liked you for a reason."

He chuckled. "Thanks."

They lapsed into silence as they turned their attention back to the TV. It was a comfortable silence, though, and that surprised Regina. She usually did not handle silence well and often tried to fill it with chatter. But with Robin, she didn't feel that urge. Or maybe it was just another way the flight had changed her as well.

She moved closer to him and rested her head on his shoulder. He patted her knee before leaving his hand there. They continued to watch the episode, just content to sit there with each other.

"Regina?" Daddy's voice made her jump and she moved away from Robin as she looked up to find her father standing in the doorway. His head was tilted and he frowned.

Tucking some hair behind her ear, she asked: "Is something wrong, Daddy?"

"I just wanted to let you know I was going to bed," he said, his gaze hardening as he looked at Robin.

"Goodnight, sir," Robin replied, trying to be as polite as possible.

Annoyed, Regina got up from the couch and ushered her father out into the hall. She stood there, crossing her arms. "Will you stop glaring at Robin like he's some sort of criminal?" she asked.

"I am not doing that," he protested. At the same time, though, he refused to meet her eyes.

"Yes, you are," she said. "This is his home for now and I want him to feel comfortable here."

Daddy sighed, looking up at her. "There's nowhere else he can stay? He has no other friends?"

"It's a bit complicated. His trust in them is a bit strained because they knew about his wife's new relationship and didn't tell him," she said in a low voice. "So he feels comfortable with me. And I'd like it if you didn't run him off."

He sighed. "Sorry, honey. I'm just worried."

"Why? I know he didn't make the best first impression but he just found out his wife was lying to him since he returned and he's not an alcoholic…"

"I know he's not an alcoholic," Daddy replied, frowning. "True, he didn't make the greatest first impression but I realized it was a once in a blue moon bender."

That surprised her and her arms dropped to her side as she tilted her head. "Then why are so hostile toward him?"

Daddy sighed. "You two are pretty close."

"Yes, we are. What we went through really bonded us. Robin was there for me and Henry both on the plane and in the bunker," she replied, not sure where her father was going with this.

"And I'm grateful for that," he insisted. "I just worry. You both feel betrayed by people you love and just had significant relationships end."

She frowned, trying to figure out why her father brought that up. It then clicked and she blinked a couple times. "You think we're dating?"

He shook his head. "I don't think you're dating but I do think you two have already bonded over a shared trauma and that you two are getting closer. I just want you to be careful and not to rush into anything before your hearts have time to heal."

"Daddy, we're just friends," she stressed. "Nothing more."

"And I'm not quite ready to throw in the towel on my marriage," Robin said, standing in the doorway. He held up his hands. "Sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop but you weren't as quiet as I think you thought you were."

Both Daddy and Regina grew sheepish and he held out his hand to Robin. "Sorry. For talking about you behind your back and for being so cold to you. While I was concerned for my daughter, it does not excuse my behavior."

"Thank you," Robin said, shaking his hand. "And I understand. You're just protecting your daughter. I promise you I have no intentions of hurting her."

Daddy nodded. "I know. Thank you."

He then stepped back. "Sorry to disturb your night. I'll see you in the morning."

"Goodnight, sir," Robin said. Regina echoed that and kissed her father's cheek before he headed upstairs.

She then turned to Robin, feeling awkward. "I'm so sorry about that."

"It's okay," he assured her, gently squeezing her arm. "Why don't we finish watching that show?"

"That sounds good to me," she replied, following him back into the living room.

They settled back down on the couch and he wrapped his arm around her. She rested her head against his shoulder once more. Friends could sit like this, she told herself. Especially if they were comfortable with each other. It didn't mean anything more than that.

She let out a contented sigh and pushed away the awkward feelings her father's conversation brought up. It was likely more people would wonder if there was more between her and Robin in the coming days once they learned where he was living now but she knew she just had to stick to the facts and the curiosity would fade away.

You seem well versed in this fandom, why do artists support each other but never writers? I've never been in a fandom where its so hard to find good authors like you!

You perceived me wrong, anon. I never have any idea what the hell is going on. Ever. I am just here in my corner, vibing.

All joking aside, I think you're conflating two problems into one: writers supporting other writers and finding new authors.

Do writers not support each other? In some ways, yeah. It is something I've noticed, but I don't think there's anything malicious going on here.

I've discussed in the past how writers how writers are often more hesitant to promote and hustle for their stories the way artists do. Something I neglected to talk about during that conversation is that it is harder for writers to garner the same amount of attention/appreciation that artists do. I think that both of these issues combined can lead to writers being inherently more isolated than artists.

Admittedly, I'm not the best at building connections with other writers (or really anyone in general, rip). I've already been called out for not reblogging more fics onto this blog. But as I slowly start reading more fics and finding new authors, I'll try my best to start building up a community of writers.

But of course, this is not a one-sided thing. It's not really up to me to fix this problem. I can reach out all I want, but other authors need to also extend hands to others as well. So I hope anyone who reads this takes it as a sign to also reach out and make some friends.

But what about finding more good authors.... like me????

Well, first off, thank you. You're very sweet.

Second-- what exactly are you looking for? If you're looking for good authors, there are plenty of them out there. You can look at any old fic rec post and find plenty of works written by great writers. You can probably ask someone what they would recommend if you like CTB (don’t ask me; I have no idea what the mass appeal of CTB is when it is, at its heart, but catering to my niche interests).

However, I will add that as far as I’m aware, long-fic-slow-burn-god-why-is-this-fic-so-freaking-complicated writers are not common in small fandoms in general. I don’t have a solid reason as to why, but it is something that I’ve noticed.

I’ve lucked out in having a great reception and a lot of people kind enough to show their support. But that’s not the case for many writers. So when someone else inevitably starts writing a monstrously long fic, you have to support them. It’s only when people know that long fics can be successful in a fandom that they are ever written.

So if you’re looking for more long fic writers, you gotta support the ones that are just starting out. You can’t wait until they’re over 100K into a story. Start now.
