Ok, story time
So recently, I was shopping on the Target website, and I made a PHENOMENAL find…
This tea party book I had when I was a kid??
I absolutely ADORED this book, read it over and over again until the pages came loose from the cover, and my grandma and I had a bunch of tea parties together and we made all kinds of things from the book 🥺 Very good memories… I hadn’t read it in years since I lost my copy, but I never forgot all the good times I had with this book
So obviously, I wasn’t gonna pass up the opportunity to buy it… I thought it was maybe out of print or something, but no?? It was just?? Available to buy on Target dot com??
And then it got here, and I just?? Oh my gosh?? My CHILDHOOD???? 🥺🥺
We made these!!
We made them with flower stickers 😊 I remember that tea party being not as much fun as the others cuz there were bees, lol
And we made these!!
My grandma’s had the colors of her favorite team 😊
And we made these!!
Though we changed the recipe a bit- left out the butter and the pecans, specifically used cinnamon raisin bread iirc, and strawberry cream cheese! They were super good 😋 The flavors complement each other really well
And we also made this 👀
We made it with apple cider mix instead cuz I didn’t like tea… so much sugary goodness, lol :p And it was really good! While I still don’t really like tea by itself, I do like it mixed with other drinks (pomegranate lemonade, and of course boba) so maybe I actually would like this if it was made with actual tea… might have to try that sometime 🤔
It was really fun being able to relive my childhood… I’d love to make some of this stuff again 😊
But there was one thing that really threw me for a loop…
The recipe for flute cookies
Must be some sort of weird Mandela effect going on, because I specifically remember the recipe saying that Lorna Doone shortbread cookies would be the right shape… in fact, I specifically remember it being how I learned about the existence of Lorna Doone cookies in the first place, and I don’t remember even seeing them in person until years after I read the book
Maybe this is a newer edition and that part of the recipe was removed, since those cookies don’t come in flute shapes anymore? But I looked at the back of the book, and nope, this is the original edition
And what’s even weirder, Lorna Doone cookies have been around since the 20s, and they’ve NEVER come in flute shapes…
also apparently they’re not actual shortbread cuz they don’t contain butter, and there was some kind of lawsuit about it?? So that was interesting to learn, lol
So where on earth did this elaborate false memory come from?? It had to originate from somewhere… maybe there was a different recipe from an American Girl book or magazine, I really enjoyed those at that age 🤔 It’s just so weird… also why did I never realize until I got this new copy that you’re probably supposed to use this kind of cookie, lol
like it literally never occurred to me XD
So that was a really fun trip down memory lane… with an unexpected mystery twist 👀 Seriously, it’s such a lovely book
#emilie barnes#let’s have a tea party#food#recipe#childhood#long post#i don’t think I’ve ever had lorna doone cookies actually 🤔#walkers is probably better anyway XD#if you want the real shortbread experience lol

Behind the TV tray is my 3-drawer bedside table, which has a makeup storage thing on it that I plan on cleaning out and getting rid of cause I don’t wear makeup anymore and could use that space for something else, a bottle of lotion, a couple little room sprays from B&BW, and a jewelry tray. Hung up on my walls around the room are a few giraffe framed paintings, a couple beachy canvas paintings, two Alexander Skarsgard calendars, a bulletin board with various stuff pinned to it, and a marker board. I’m still cleaning up after this feast. It took me days to prepare but it was worth it and so magical. I always wanted to have an experience that was somewhere near the same level of the hogwarts feast and not only did it feel like that but it felt so warm and joyful like the way Christmas feels glimmery and jolly and how you feel loved ones though it was just physically me and my friends. I felt a loving familial presence as if our loved ones that have passed away were there.
I didn’t take such great photos cause fyi we were under some great influences so I didn’t capture it well plus it was dark as I dimmed the lights and just had candles lit.
Not pictured- for starters as we waited for friends to arrived I had carved a large pumpkin with shandy made with pumpking beer, pumpkin pie soda, maple bourbon and ginger zest. It was served with candied bacon carmelized with brown sugar, harvest chips (like sweet potato/ube/beets etc) and apple turkey sausage.
The main course was served with fresh apple cider, iced mugwort tea in the skull bottle and dark mulled wine spiced with anise and flavored with pomegranate. There was pumpkin sweet potato mash, roasted pork with rosemary, potatoes and pomegranate, spiced Mac and cheese in the pumpkin casserole, shredded beet, carrot and apple salad with a fire cider vinaigrette, roasted carrots and roots along with Brussels sprouts with dill. I was going to make sides of sweet corn and curried beans but as you can see there was already a lot lol.
Between main and dessert was the ritual. We lit the candles and incense (dragons blood as usual and pumpkin spice!) and spoke about our ancestors as the candles were lit. We poured wine with pomegranate for them and made a dish of food offerings. We then spoke what we wanted for the new year to come which prepared me to make the flaming absinthe shots which we projected our intent into. We took the shot then prepared for dessert!
Dessert was even more overwhelming than the main course. I was joking with my friends that the real death we were honoring is our food coma that was about to happen. I served an apple prosecco to toast that I mixed with a few teaspoons of candy green apple liqueur (what’s in the potion bottle. I melted green jolly ranchers and mixed with puckers and vodka) that turned the bubbly green. I also had black crystal candy wands to stir in the champagne or tea so it turned it black and sparkly which fit the theme of transformation. I made spiced pumpkin tea with cinnamon sticks and the sweet black honey from my garden. The dessert treats consisted of candy corn jello parfaits with whipped cream, cookie shortbread sandwiches- flavored maple sugar (with maple buttercream filling), dark chocolate (with orange colored white chocolate peanut butter filling so it was like a reeses) and the most popular was pumpkin pie (with pumpkin cookie butter and marshmallow spread filling). Then there was a large sweet potato tart with well toasted marshmallow topping with golden star sprinkles and served with whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. Of course I got like very cute artisanal candies that fit the theme and made it feel really like a hogwarts candy feast. I got black and orange twisted lollies, chocolate skulls, the large round vintage lollipops I covered with white tissue paper and drew ghost faces on them, candy corn sprinkled on the table mostly for decoration, chocolates, it was a lot for just us but a lot of offerings were made and now I have plenty of left overs ha ha. My friends were thrilled at the magical feast and when I get to let my kitchen witchery shine. One suggested I should just host events and people pay me money to do this for a living lol.
Also I’m apart of a witchcraft group on fb and it’s cool to see how many various cultures celebrate a day of the dead whether it be Italy (festival delle ombre), China (Qingming festival), Mexico, Haiti etc and it’s a holiday that has to do so much with heritage and it’s interesting how much the food I made is just very black American soul food (which I associate with mid autumn anyway cause my family would make baked Mac and cheese with sweet and spiced beans this time of year) mixed slightly with French cooking. I mean all together it still feels very Americana but usually since samhain is celebrated in mostly Western European circles and I went to a few samhain feasts this year it’s funny how mine is unique since the food choices are not traditionally Irish/far Western European at all.

it’s late, but oh well. Today was pretty good. I had my alarm set for 11:20 but woke up to a phone call at 11:10 (I keep my phone on vibrate, sometimes it wakes me up and sometimes it doesn’t) so I just ended up being awake from then on. Got ready and headed to class, tried to pay attention but I mean, you know how that goes 🤷🏻♀️I do have to start preparing for finals better though. Tonight was my second to last legal profession class for the semester and I feel like I have a fairly good grasp on things overall but the finer details I still get lost in (like the disqualifications for conflict of interest are insanely complicated for some reason). After class I went to grab the “extra reading” for tonight’s class from where it was on the 7th floor, then retreated to the PAD office and started reading that. Around 3:30 or so my friend came to the office, and we had previously discussed getting pizza today and she was like starving, so we went and did that. While we were getting pizza (so good, I’m obsessed with it) I got a confirmation email that both of my letters of recommendation for the fellowship application that was due today were submitted, which was of course a big relief to me, because there had been some complications in the submission process. My old supervisor from OPG CC’ed me on it so I got to read the letter, and guys, it made me so happy. He was practically gushing about how great the motion I wrote was and how well I handled myself in court arguing against 3 full blown attorneys. So hopefully that will look good. I’m not like, terribly confident I’ll get selected for this particular fellowship because it’s mostly based around immigrant’s rights stuff, which isn’t exactly what I have experience in, but I figured it can’t hurt to apply, and if I got it I would be working close to my family but not too close, which is what I’m aiming for at the moment (basically, New York City). So I was glad that was done with. But yeah, got pizza, and ate it at the little food hall place, which is like, the most hipster thing ever haha and eventually I’m gonna need to try the other like, 15 places in there because there are so many and all of them look delicious (there’s like a poke place, a ramen place, a bakery, literally anything you can think of). After we finished we went back to school and I finished up the extra reading, then chilled for a little before going to class. I had a bit more luck paying attention in this class, my professor was asking if we learned about asbestos litigation in our other classes and like one person raised their hand (I believe it was brought up in torts, but very briefly) so I raised my hand and said it hadn’t been brought up in my classes but I knew about it because my dad handles that kind of litigation. Then I raised my hand again regarding a conversation I had with my poverty law professor last night about lawyers doing pro bono work versus them just donating money (my poverty law professor’s opinion was that sometimes money would just be more useful). So I at least felt like I participated in the class. I spent most of both of my classes today scanning pinterest to figure out what desserts I want to make for Thanksgiving, and I eventually settled on cranberry almond shortbread cookies, a dulce de leche apple cake, and a momofuku milk bar “crack pie” which should be, well, interesting lol. When class was over I went home and started Legends, which overall I felt like was a pretty strong episode. I adore finally having three women (plus Gideon) on the waverider, and all the badass adventures they go on together. They better let Sara actually kill Damien Darhk this season or I’m going to flip a shit. The Jax and Stein freaky friday thing was absolutely hilarious, but I couldn’t help but think it was just this week’s excuse to keep firestorm on the ship and out of the special effects budget. The sword fight between Sara and Darhk was pretty sweet, but I feel like I need to point out that you really cannot kill anybody with prop swords, lol. We knew from next week’s episode description that Sara was going to be “out of commission” so I wasn’t surprised when that happened, I’m just glad it’s a fairly easy fix (and I mean, we knew she would be fine for the crossover anyway). But the best part of course by far was Zari taking Helen of Troy to Themyscira instead of back to Troy because holy references batman, between this and Supergirl’s Smallville references last night this might be the best week for references in DCTV history, lol. That was absolutely perfect and I’m so glad they did it, so yeah, no real complaints here. Went right to the Flash afterwards and was rather underwhelmed by the episode. I’m getting really tired of Ralph already, he’s not entertaining, and really just a sleezebag, which is frustrating when you know that’s not at all what his character is in the comics and they basically entirely changed him for the show. But yeah, the whole episode was kind of blah. the villain wasn’t particularly interesting, and the storyline overall felt kind of thin, I guess we’ll see where they go with the whole Thinker in a wheelchair thing, since my first reaction was “are we just gonna trust that the guy in a wheelchair is actually disabled this time?” because I have my doubts after season 1 lol. and not too long after that I got ready for bed and here we are. Like I said, it’s late, so I won’t waste any more time and just go to bed. Goodnight sweeties. Stay awesome.

alright, it’s not that late but I already took my meds a while ago so I’m getting pretty sleepy. but today was a good day. I woke up at 11:06 am, went downstairs and had a bagel for breakfast. It was snowing and didn’t look like it would stop for several more hours. I was trying to figure out something to bring to my friend’s house tomorrow night for the chill new years eve party they’re having, and I eventually decided on the cranberry almond shortbread bites that I was planning to make for Christmas but never got around to actually making. so I took a while to do that, and had some tea while they were baking. Throughout this time we were playing the game “psych” on our phones with all of our family members, so that was entertaining. When they were done I bummed around on my laptop for a while, and doing some editing to my pinterest boards because I wanted to make a board of all my Christmas recipes, so I basically had to go through all of the sweet food item boards I have (which is 28, I just counted) and move any receipts from there to the new board, so that actually took a while. I was going to also make a fall recipes board, but going through I realized I have a shit ton of pumpkin recipes that would make that board wayyyyyyy too long, so I may just do a pumpkin one and then a fall one for the other stuff, like apple cider based desserts. we’ll see. I find organizing pinterest recipes kind of relaxing really, and I was trying to get myself to relax a bit and not stress out about feeling like I’m not being productive, because that’s okay because I don’t have anything pressing I need to do at this moment, I really can relax. I had some pastina at one point which needed salt because it was made with low sodium chicken broth which pretty much zaps all the flavor. mostly though I just hung around the house and interacted with my family, including my aunt and cousins who are here. Around dinner time we decided to order pizza because everyone was tired and didn’t feel like making a big meal for everybody. so we did, and the pizza guy made it to our house despite the somewhat skeptical road conditions, so we ate pizza which was quite good, I took my slices and stuck them in the oven under the broiler for like 3 minutes each (it goes really quickly) so the cheese gets all crispy and cooked to the perfect texture and is basically just the best thing ever. after dinner my brother got us to play this new game he got off amazon called “Bucket of Doom,” lol. it’s more or less your basic cards against humanity set up, where there’s one card that has a life threatening situation on it, and you’re dealt 8 cards with different objects and things listed on them, and you have to pick one to use in your plan to escape the situation, and then everyone votes on whose was the best. the game was definitely a little risqué, especially for my mother’s taste, so she didn’t end up playing much, but oh man, this game was soooo funny. We all laughed so hard as we came up with the most ridiculous plans (like I said to get out of being trapped in a tanning bed that’s roasting you I would use my card that said “Nicholas Cage’s cell phone number” because he has experience like stealing the constitution and kidnapping the president so I’m sure he could be helpful in this situation, lol). But it was all very funny and we all (except kind of for my mom) enjoyed it. After that we kind of chilled for a little more and I continued working on the pinterest boards, and around 9 my sister asked me if I’d take her and our cousin to chickfila, which didn’t close until ten, so I said sure and we headed out. the roads were fine really, our street has been chronically underplowed so far this season so it was a bit hazardous, but pretty much all of the main roads had been plowed so it was really fine. They got chicken meals, and I got a small strawberry milkshake. came back home and continued to hang for a bit until my computer ran out of battery power, so I came upstairs to put it on the charger, then finally finished the pinterest boards, then actually started getting ready for bed. it was still way too cold in the house today and I’m getting soooo sick of it, but there’s apparently not really much we can do at this point other than having a fire going in the fireplace constantly (and that’s not even very much help, ugh). I can’t believe tomorrow is new years eve and 2017 will be over. since I’ll be at my friends tomorrow night, I probably won’t get home to write this post until after midnight when it will officially be 2018, so this is functionally my last daily journal post of 2017. If I’m remembering correctly (and I am) I did a post for every single day this year, which is kind of awesome. I almost had that for 2016 too, but I missed a few days in the aftermath and haywire of breaking my wrist and having surgery and all that fun stuff. but yeah, 2017. Can’t really say it was a great year for me. It had good parts, sure, and I’m very thankful for the awesome things I got to do like go to two HVFF’s and meet up with my awesome friends, and also just making a ton of internet friends that I love so much....but at the same time I feel like my real life friends have dwindled quite a bit, I feel like I don’t really talk to them as much as I used to, which isn’t something I’m happy about. and then of course there was the massive shitshow that was this summer for me, which was the fucking worst in just about every way, and a very poignant reminder of just how fragile my mental health is. Seriously, one medication changed, and I suddenly can't even function as a normal human being. I can’t even get out of bed, I just don’t have the strength to, and that really made this summer feel like a giant pit of depression that I was fairly miserable during, so it definitely was not the best time for me. But I think I’m (mostly) back to normal now, so that’s good news at least. heading into the new year, I’m stressed about finding a job, and worried I won’t be able to get one, despite having options that are promising leads, at least. it just all feels very grown up and professional all of a sudden, and I just don’t want to fuck it all up. and I guess we’ll go from there. I’m very excited that 2018 is the year I will graduate from school once and for all, after 20 years of schooling (which is, honestly, just ridiculous) and never ever going back, because I”m soooooo ready to be done with everything, Just gotta get to May, just power through. I know I can do it, but I also know it’s gonna take a lot of work, but everything else up to this point has also needed that, so I’m not particularly phased by it. Anyway. Like I said at the beginning my eyes want to be closed now, so I’m gonna go ahead and do that now. Goodnight my loves. Have a lovely New Year’s Eve.
