what are your favorite pieces of sci fi and/or fantasy media? (can be either books/comics/movies)

i didn’t read many comics because i lived in a rlly small rural town & comic books were too expensive with my reading speed. i had to pick the biggest books i could to make them last or i’d end up reading the cook books again by the end of the month. also i added video games bc that’s where a lot of my fav universes are. 

books: (i could go on for 20 years but i’ll stick to a few)

wheel of time -

i got the first book i think when i was 8/9. it took me a week to get past the prologue bc i did not appreciate feeling confused but once i got to Rand & the road and the figure in the cloak i was HOOKED. i brought it to school that week & a sub teacher (legend, in hindsight) came up & was like ‘oh! that’s a great book’ and i mostly glared distrustfully at her bc teachers liked to take books off me or (hate hate) take me aside when the rest of the class were doing sums or whatever and make me read a passage to them, then drill me about the meaning of different words. i get they were trying to see if i actually had that reading level or whatever but it was mortifying. so yeah, glared at her, so sorry bc she was right. it took me years to acquire and read all of the books but been so so normal about them ever since. my favs are probably moiraine (shocker), lan, elayne (actually love her so much an unreasonable amount), mat (gender reasons) and siuan (obviously). 

the book of the ancestor -

THESE BOOKS. there are nuns in this too. they are badass ninja magic nuns and a lot of them are so so gay. it’s about the found family and a little girl called Nona who probably would bite you but she’s actually the kindest softest best person in the world. her friends are all kind of gay for her; she’s kind of gay for all her friends. there are two older nuns called Apple & Kettle who are just flagrantly massive lesbians and it’s so so funny. Apple is a poisoner & Kettle is a spy and they have just such a THING going on i adore them. this trilogy is wonderful & the magic is so cool & the character dynamics are !!!!! feral there’s a Judas character there’s rivals-to-lover/ friends-to-lover. it’s a meditation on where we find meaning and in whom and what we fight for. has everything i love love love. also like… can think of two men off the top of my head in a cast of like 40 deranged women. amazing. 

the fitz & the fool books -

got this on family holiday to Rome when i was 10. ignored rome in favour of reading this day and night. i read it three times in one week. barely stepped foot in the pool. it’s a gorgeous character-driven story. fitzchivalry farseer is ultimate himbo rep. also magical bonding with a wolf will get me every time. there are like two trilogies now. they r so good. 

the murderbot diaries -

ghdklskdsl killer robot gains sentience. just wants to watch their TV shows & be left alone. sadly, stupid humans get in stupid situation & secunit has to endure the mortifying ordeal of being known. SECUNIT i’d die for u. the novels are pretty short but there are quite a few now & each one has a new and awesome take on artificial intelligence and self-advocacy and found family and what it means to be alive. 

the broken earth trilogy -

these books ripped my heart out of my chest and i said thank you. gorgeously written. deals with rlly rlly interesting & important themes. the main character is just so cool, she’s also, like, an older woman with kids but she’s the hero and the main character and i think that’s kind of awesome. the magic SLAPS. it’s plate tectonics babey. 

the black magician trilogy -

these & wot were my gateway to the fantasy genre fr fr. my friend’s mom bought her the first one and she fobbed it off on me (we were 9. she was only interested in this webside called Howrse where you pretended to own horses??) i got locked outside my house after walking home from hers and spent two hours tucked into a narrow nook outside the back door while it bucketed rain down around me. best two hours of my life. first canon queer rep i ever read. there r a bunch of trilogies now. great stuff on healing magic & sonea is so stubborn i love that for her. don’t let anyone reason with you darling. 

movies:

star wars: yes yes yes we know that casper likes star wars. but casper LOVES star wars. obi-wan is my favourite character in the prequels. in the og trilogy probably han solo (i am not immune to THAT), but also as i got older Luke Skywalker too. c3po for that bitch boy energy. i owe him a lot. there is only one movie in the third trilogy & i love Finn. shame they never made the last two movies. 

pirates of the caribbean: ELIZABETH SWAN. we can all blame her for my lesbian behaviour. we can all blame will turner for my gender. 

the alien movies: 1 & 2 mostly, but i will watch the others with my eyes. i can’t help myself. lots of blood & gore = casper happy. blood + actual good storytelling is like porn with plot to me but i will take porn without plot. i am a simple creature. i loved NEWT because talking can be evil sometimes and also living for weeks in a deserted compound with a killer robot - what?? like it’s hard?? obvs Ripley is a legend. bush representation. 

lotr: i love the books too but i grew up on the movies & my uncle only loaned me his 3-in-1 version when i was 10. i don’t know what to say don’t ever talk to me about boromir don’t ever talk to me about gimli and legolas don’t EVER talk to me about sam or frodo. unless you are prepared for a sleeping-beauty type situation where you blink and your kingdom has fallen into darkness bc i’ve been talking for 35 years. 

i LOVE the movie Arrival: linguistics & aliens, non-linearity of the narrative. CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP. it’s the good tasty stuff. also mood when she arrives to teach & there are like 4 people and she’s like ‘hmm. okay.’ that’s every day of my life teaching obscure bs. i also kind of want her house. badly. and LISTEN the short story is also good but i rlly like the weird feral energy she had going on in the movie. sign me up so fast for a deranged woman in stem. (she’s in linguistics but let me have my joke. it’s basically math)

video games

mass effect: if you were here with me on tumblr in 2014 1. i’m sorry and 2. you know that liara t’soni is my wife and i’d die for her. these games gave me the most severe brainrot. no i cannot ever be mean to anyone ever but i do push that guy off the Dantius tower in ME2 because it’s funny. Aria t’Loak can [redacted] me if she wants. but yeaaaah. these games are amazing and i still genuinely burst into tears every time Leaving Earth comes on my playlist. there’s just something abt it. played the game on rec of my hot physics teacher. to nobody’s surprise. my favs are Liara (going to tell you humiliating anecdote now. one time i was talking loudly to my friend in my room while playing ME and i said ‘hey, that’s my girlfriend’ loudly and my mom burst in like !!!! YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND I WANT TO MEET HER. imagine her disappointment when it was a collection of pixels on my tv. she was like ‘…. cas. go outside.’) i also like Jack, Miranda (love a woman who is mean to me), WREX BOI, tali bc i want to smooch her helmet and because of that time she gets drunk it’s so funny. i like garrus too okay but my friend never shut up about him so i was sick of him in the same way she was sick of Brynjolf after the 500th time i said he could [redacted]. 

jak and daxter: aaaaahhh. the mild child neglect game. basically my mum got this when i was a toddler & one time got so engrossed trying to cross Fire Canyon she let me fall asleep in my walker. i was fine but my dad never let her or me or anyone forget about it. it’s his measure for how good things are. ‘oh, is it fall asleep in your walker good?’ i think i learned my motor skills playing this game. my hands were sucky clumsy bastards so actually it helped. i was bad at it for so long but now i can 100% the game without dying once in about 3 hours. not speedrun territory but still. it’s just!!! visually incredible. the story is so funny. whatever gender Jak has i want. Daxter was my comedic role-model so you can see how that turned out for me. it’s totally worth watching Jak & Daxter (the whole trilogy) on YT or playing it. the games of all time to me. the kind of fantasy worlds i create are still massively influenced by this. also Jak didn’t speak for the first game so he was autism rep to me as a kid even tho i had only bouts of being non-verbal & other times never shutting tf up. 

ratchet & clank: same vein as jak & daxter. made by naughty dog who yes also made TLOU. so funny, so visually stunning. A Crack in Time is the best game come and fight me. but also LOVED Rift Apart bc one character had a prosthetic limb & she was rlly rlly cool. idk the sci-fi world in Ratchet and Clank is basically a shitpost but it’s also so gorgeous and so fun and makes no sense but (Daniel Craig voice) compels me though. i love the second and third games also and ALSO tools of destruction. HAS AMAZING MUSIC. such bopping. best track is probably novalis imo. 

horion zero dawn: this is more recent. drives me insane. there are kind of mechanical dinosaurs and you have a bow and arrow and you fight them and Aloy is so sarcastic and so clever and so (looks into the camera like she’s on the office) about everything. it’s an amazing world & i love her little found family and the BIG ‘go the fuck to sleep’ energy she has. so stubborn love that for her. 

pokemon: like i said. neighbour wanted to play GTA on PS2 without traumatising me so gave me his red gameboy and pokemon gold. then i learned to read. got sapphire for my 7th christmas + the GameBoy Advanced SP. got every game since then & I JUST LOVE POKEMON. it’s THE autism game (sorry stardew. sucks to suck) you collect little guys and you battle and you walk around and you shiny hunt and there are like 900 different pokemon now. i mean we all know pokemon anyway but yeah i was obsessed my whole life. wanted to be ash ketchum i love his attitude imo he’s a very ava silva character and i like how he says “i like carrots and peppers and bugs” he’s so valid for that.

skyrim: hehehehe. 2011. got this for christmas based on the cinematic trailer (god’s strongest soldier i am not) and was so scared of the draugr i emerged out of my room at 3am on st-stephen’s day in a pose like i was holding a greatsword WIHOUT REALISING i was doing it. i git good at the game tho & learned to mod. aaaaahhhh it’s one of my fav worlds to get lost in. my mum sent me this text when i texted her a pic of the official skyrim guidebook

Lore and stuff is a grey area, but I've made a post about how vampires in my story came to be from a previous ask.

Instead, I'll talk about how i designed Luke's upbringing and how I slotted him and vampire!Leia into the original plot of the OT!

Here goes, thank you so much:

I wrote the first chapter of BBB on a whim, fully expecting it to go completely under the dinluke radar, and it turns out people liked it! I thought for a while about how a vampire could exist in star wars, and I came to the conclusion that Luke would be veiled, susceptible to the occasional blood cravings, and a hopeless insomniac (due to his kind being nocturnal).

First of all, how would this fare with Tatooine being his place of upbringing?

Well, Shmi raised Anakin, learned all she could, and taught it to Beru (link to this piece is up there ^ how vampires came to be) so, Beru learned after taking in Luke that she would have to feed him blue milk and fruit to suppress the blood cravings and dress him in many layers to avoid sunburn and sickness.

(Leia's adoptive parents did not have this knowledge, this is talked about in Ch2, Where Fruit Doesn't Grow) here's a snip to explain:

Shmi had taught Beru everything she knew before her brutal murder: how to keep a vampire’s fragile skin healthy, how to make the medicines and pastes needed for burns out of cheap herbs you could find at any market, and, especially, how to appease the appetite of an adolescent with a craving for blood. Despite the troubles with two suns, and Luke’s often reckless behaviour, on a planet where life was scarce, food was their biggest problem.

Beru had never let that stop her. Whether it meant long hour shifts or staying out late at night to kill and sell large creatures, she always made sure she had saved enough money to buy Luke’s favourite treats from the local fruit import at the end of each ten-day. That, and bantha milk, seemed to cut off need for red meat for a short while, and Luke would be forever grateful that he didn’t have to live the way he was born.

Even if being “normal” meant sneaking out to eat fruit and climb trees each night.

And while Beru was almost always busy, convinced that it was her job to provide for the child she loved so much, Uncle Owen stayed home. He taught Luke how to fix rusty parts of vapour spires, or how to cook simple dishes, while his wife taught Luke how to use a farmer’s rifle.

She’d been loved, cared for, she’d taken on the role of Princess and then Senator at a younger age than many simply because of her powerful and intelligent role models.

But they didn’t know how to raise a vampire.

Leia would run away, climb trees and watch the starships fly by from the canopies. A life without the rules that Luke had lived by, but it had left her susceptible to sun-sickness and often heatstroke. All things had their price.

So, that was that bit covered, but how does this work with the original trilogy? The bits we see, anyway?

I'll go into what I did in ch10 and 11, a little into 9, and what I'll do in future to explain.

In ch10 and 11 we see (from a separate perspective that I can't tell you about unless you've read those chapters) Luke's return from blowing up the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin, and Luke's final victory after his duel with Vader and his punishment from Palpatine during the Battle of Endor.

In ch10, BY, as it isn't Luke's perspective, I don't need to go into depth about his senses, his experience, or the X-Wings tinted windows to block out harmful sunlight — this is all however referenced in previous and future chapters.

Neither did I have to in ch11 — again, we see it from someone else's view — but we do see a moment between Luke and Leia, where his sister is tending to his burn wounds.

Ch2: The scorching dash of white lightning that had climbed his skin and imprinted itself forever on his body.

Ch9: The flashing lights, rippling the starless sky like silver fish in a black lake, sent Luke back to the Emperor’s throne room on the second Death Star, writhing in the most agony he’d ever felt. It was worse than sunlight: a sensation of scorching heat, wrapping like vines around his body, unwilling to let go, and permanently damaging his skin when he had never before suffered any more than sun-sickness.

Finally, Ch11: The lightning had fractured him, left long, red cuts and burns along his toned body. They were even on his face, crossing his nose and either cheek in one long strike that split into thinner lines like the tributaries of a scorched, red river. His blue eyes were wet with tears, and his face morphed into an exhausted scowl.

Luke's skin — him being vampiric — is weak and easily scarred. When I rewatched RotJ, I immediately knew that I couldn't have him completely unscathed after the lightning incident, considering that just meer minutes in the sun causes him immense pain.

for book recs it’s difficult because i’ve read different genres and i don’t know what genre you like but the one i read recently i called “the nightingale” by kirstin hannah and it was so good! it’s about 2 sisters in france during world war II and their struggle to survive while resisting from germany invading france! the story was way better than it sounds and i literally finished it in a day and a half!

i also read “wicked: the life and times of the wicked witch of the west” by gregory maguire (the 2020 remaster, not the original 1995) and compared to the reviews it got i really liked it! it’s a trilogy series but i’ve only read the first one and it was pretty good! some parts of it got boring but the story line picked up quickly and it kept me entertained for a while, it did take me a little longer to finish the book but i would read the rest of the series again

i am going to be honest, i read a colleen hoover book because so many people at work were checking it out and i wanted to see what the hype was about and i was…….insanely disappointed and she should’ve just stuck with writing on wattpad, long story short i don’t recommend touching her books with a 10 foot poll

hey, do you have any tips on getting into the WoT or the realm of the elderlings? weird question, probably: I don't keep stuff like that in mind for my favourite media but idk I figured I'd ask. I've always wanted to get into them but they're rlly dense compared to what I'm used to and even the first WoT book is longer than the longest book I've ever read, and that was Priory of the Orange Tree, so-

Well, with Wheel of Time, my main tip would be: be aware that the series changed a lot as it developed. Robert Jordan set out to do his take on Lord of the Rings, as in: take the same premise (kids from an idyllic countryside forced into a quest for the sake of the world) but with his own twist on it. That's book one, and as such, a lot of the universe's rules aren't fully set in stone. This isn't to say it's completely incoherent with the rest of the series, just that after book one, things change dramatically in terms of what the books are. Even just the PoV distribution is wildly different, for instance.

Past book one, people might argue similar turns happen around book 3 and somewhere in the middle books. There is also the infamous "slog", a few books after the midpoint (which books are included depends on who you ask, but somewhere around 8-10) where Jordan is juggling so many plot threads that a few of them don't seem to meaningfully advance. It never felt as bad to me as many other people, and in fact I tend to think of Winter's Heart (book 9) as one of my favorite, but I'd rather people be warned than let them go in blind. By the time you get to those books, you'll either be invested enough that you'll probably want to keep going or you'll already have given up from earlier books because it's Just Not For You, so I don't think being aware of it is a negative.

That said, at this point, I would say the show adaptation by Amazon [obligatory retching noises] is actually stellar so far. Not a replacement for the books, because it puts its own spin on the story and characters, but it's faithful enough to the spirit of the books that I would say it could be a good idea to check out the show first, then go read the books if it seems like something you'd enjoy. At least it's something worth considering.

As for the Elderlings books, first it's important to note that there are five series in publishing order:

The Farseer trilogy/Royal Assassin in some places

The Liveship Traders trilogy

The Tawny Man trilogy

The Rain Wild Chronicles quadrilogy

The Fitz and the Fool trilogy

Plus a couple short stories I'm not even really going to talk about here. Of these, three center around the same protagonist (Farseer, Tawny Many and Fitz&Fool) and are told entirely from his first-person perspective, while the other two are third person with switching PoVs.

I'd say it's fine to start with the first two Fitz trilogies (Farseer then Tawny Man). Maybe it's my bias showing, because they were in fact packaged as a single series by the French publisher I got them from first, but reading them back to back really does feel like one continuous narrative, even if there's a clear break between the two with a time skip and everything. They also have the advantage of focusing on one place and set of characters, and it's really only by the end of the second one that you can start seeing the thematic and overarching narrative that Robin Hobb is building there.

After that, Liveship Traders is set between the two (and was also published in between) but can definitely be read afterwards. There's a couple cameos in the Tawny Man trilogy but the order is somewhat interchangeable as far as I'm concerned, even after rereads, but it's only post-Tawny Man that this series doesn't feel like a standalone that just happens to share one (major) character. And even then, you can only guess that it's the same character until Tawny Man.

Once you're past that, the Rain Wilds Chronicles follows up on the Liveship Traders, with (mostly) a different set of characters but essentially continuing the narrative on that side of the world. It was published after the Tawny Man and should also be read afterwards, again for reasons of world developments and thematic setup.

Fitz and the Fool is a conclusion to the entire world narrative (so far? I don't think Hobb has any plans to keep going) so that one's definitely for last. It's also the one that most clearly connects all the existing characters.

So tldr: try the first two Fitz trilogies. If you like them, you're almost certain to like all the other books. If you don't like them, do consider trying Liveship Traders since it does kinda work as a standalone. You never know what might click with you.

Can I get more f that Kenny’s physiology with his alter egos? I’m rlly interested in that

i’ve put it off cuz i’ve been busy with other stuff but i‘m really glad i got this ask cuz i love kenny and I love thinking about them in the context of their two alter egos!

CW: discussion of child abuse and neglect, including inexplicit discussion of child sexuality. also a lot of discussion of The Whole Kenny Death Thing. also spoilers for the stick of truth if you haven’t played it!

kenny’s been treated a lot more seriously in recent seasons, with a shift in character to be a lot more mature as well, and it’s a development that makes a lot of sense in the context of “the characters have undergone A Lot and it’s really shaped their personalities because they’re at a stage when their brain is still very soft and malleable and susceptible to trauma.”

the addition of karen in “the poor kid” seems to have shaken up the depiction of the mccormicks a lot. in earlier seasons, kenny was more passive about his home situation, or at least went out of his way to ignore them, (like in “best friends forever” when he plays on his PSP and leaves the house while his parents fight). there are early scenes where he does have some responsibility to his family (i.e. trying to win a can of food for them in “starvin marvin”) but usually he’s just depicted as a kid trying to live through a tough situation. though his “willing to do anything for money even if it’s deeply upsetting, depraved, or outright deadly” character trait from “fat camp” kind of tracks with this understanding that he prioritizes financial security over his personal well-being. 

however, ever since karen was added to the show, kenny’s been depicted as a much more responsible and often even tragic figure. his parents are too caught up in their own shit to address their children’s emotional needs, and kevin sadly gets caught up in their violence as well in “the poor kid” (he’s also vaguely implied to be developmentally disabled in the few scenes he speaks up but that’s mostly speculation). because of this, kenny ends up being karen’s main caretaker - holding her close when she’s distressed at losing her parents, buying her a doll, etc. 

kenny’s situation is a textbook example of parentification. he ends up taking care of karen, at least emotionally, because his parents and brother are unable to do so. he also becomes the breadwinner in “the city part of town” as soon as he gets the chance. this is a really unhealthy scenario that a lot of children in poverty, especially older siblings, see themselves in. it can result in the child not knowing their true place in a family that takes them for granted, and thus not considering their own needs and/or feeling shame if they need help because they’re so used to putting everybody before them. i think this tracks with kenny being “the quiet one” and rarely asking for anything. 

that’s not even getting into the constant death and the fact he spent so much of his life not even understanding why he was doomed to constantly die in horrible painful ways, and for nobody else to remember that he even died to begin with. (kind of symbolic of the neglected child, huh?) 

this brings us to mysterion and princess kenny. in both the superhero game and the fantasy game, you’ll notice kenny is the one who tends to get the most involved, with the only exception being possibly cartman, who could be the topic of a whole other essay on identity issues. mysterion is the one superhero with a real power who exists outside of their superhero game (besides the kewn, whose superhero persona is entirely self-motivated anyway), and princess kenny gets so defensive of her identity that she betrays her friends in both the trilogy and the game. kenny also talks about lady mccormick in the third person in the first black friday episode, and i don’t know if any other characters speak about their personas in that way. so kenny intentionally places more distance between his personas and himself than the other kids do with their personas. 

therefore, i see mysterion and princess kenny as how kenny copes with his deeply repressed psychological issues. it’s a way to compartmentalize his feelings towards his constant suffering and the burden his family inadvertently placed on him by developing these two identities. one embraces his role as caretaker to the degree of becoming a superhero, and the other rejects it in favor of being entirely doted upon. (some people have read the prominence of roles as signs of a dissociative disorder, and i can see that with this context, but i don’t know if it’s really a perfect fit for any specific disorder, especially when there’s little information on kenny’s consciousness when it comes to these personas.)

mysterion is more obviously a tool for kenny to express his discontent with his town. in his first appearance, he states, “i could no longer sit by and watch as my city became a cesspool of crime,” which tracks with his earlier characterization as reluctantly accepting his family’s poverty despite constantly suffering. (plus i’m pretty sure several of kenny’s deaths were the result of crimes.) he refuses to be unmasked because he “would stop being a symbol,” and only does so in order to quell the unrest that his mystery has provoked. that "symbol" wording suggests that mysterion is an extreme version of kenny's self-sacrificing lifestyle to the point where he defines himself as a symbol of justice and hope, not a person. kenny himself is also pretty quiet and secretive, but more because nobody cares about him and he’s kind of afraid of getting killed any second. mysterion’s secret persona is something bold, powerful, and masculine. he is physically adept in a way we don’t see kenny behave, and much more reasonable and cautious about what’s best for him and humanity. (a good visual of this to contrast with kenny is the “mysterion re-rising” animation in the fractured but whole, where he consciously rejects the chance to go to the heaven full of naked women that kenny loves because he has to return to battle.)

mysterion is also a way for kenny to reclaim his "curse” and use it for good. as mysterion, he uses death (albeit reluctantly) to get out of tough situations and save his friends. in video games like fractured but whole and phone destroyer, mysterion’s ability to exist as a ghost and revive himself is a gameplay mechanic. this self-sacrificial personality trait has shown up in earlier seasons, and he kills himself for the good of the community/world/etc in “cartman’s mom is still a dirty slut,” the movie, and “jewbilee.” but he’s not nearly as interested in world issues unless he’s under pressure to care. (for example: he does join the workers’ strike in “bike parade,” but he’s not very passionate about it and doesn’t even care about the issue until his dad takes him to a union meeting.) kenny’s good with solving short-term issues while mysterion worries about the deeper, long-term problems with the town. 

this brings us to mysterion and the mccormicks. when we see mysterion’s interactions with karen, we see how mysterion represents kenny’s responsibilities towards her. mysterion is able to offer karen elaborate, heartfelt emotional support, and guarantee that he’ll always be there for her. he also beats up a girl who bullies her and threatens anybody else who thinks about hurting her - more on that aggressive instinct down below. while mysterion’s identity is known to his friends and the rest of the town, it’s not known to karen, who sees him as a guardian angel. presumably, this is so mysterion can remain a symbol of hope to her, just like he is to the town, and so karen feels like there’s people in the world who care about her besides her brother. however, this does backfire in the fractured but whole DLC where she laments how her brother doesn’t seem to spend time with her, which embarrasses mysterion as he promises to tell him to be there for her more often. this implies that kenny gets so wrapped up in being mysterion that he forgets that he has a duty to karen as kenny as well, further indicating that mysterion is a way to cope with the tragic responsibility of caring for a sibling not much younger than he is.

during the superhero trilogy, kenny also uses mysterion to question his parents about their cult meetings, something that shook him so badly when he learned about it that he broke character. mysterion also told his parents to be nicer to the kids, not beat each other up, pay their kids allowances, and not smoke. it seems that mysterion is able to approach kenny’s parents about serious issues while kenny himself mostly stays out of their business - possibly out of fear? (kenny’s more confrontational in later seasons, though - flipping off his dad in “bike parade,” for example.)

on a similar note, mysterion is way more openly angry and violent than kenny is, especially when it comes to the death curse, which he openly complains about in a way kenny himself never did. compare kenny complaining about stan ignoring his deaths in “cherokee hair tampons,” which only gets further ignored, and mysterion complaining about it in graphic detail in “coon vs coon and friends,” even killing himself in front of his friends, and understandably scaring the shit out of them. mysterion also gets really protective of karen, violently so, as seen with the girl he beats up in “the poor kid” and his distrust when the vampires befriend her in the “from dusk til casa bonita” DLC. such a mysterion is way more passionate and loud about justice and direct action while kenny is more resigned, and most of his good deeds are unknown to the public. if kenny has embraced this caretaker role, it makes sense that he vents his repressed anger through mysterion, especially if you take it in the context of dissociation - kenny can’t handle dwelling on his shitty life all the time, so mysterion holds that anger and finds a way to cope with it by trying to fix everything around them, including kenny’s home life. 

princess kenny is very opposite mysterion in many ways. most obviously, she’s a girl. kenny’s relationship with gender is something i think about a lot in light of PK. “tweek vs craig” depicted him as the only boy in home ec, and he was thrilled because it was the safe alternative to the deadly shop class. i think that, regardless of your headcanon for kenny’s gender (i personally see them as feminine nonbinary - i’m mostly using “he” pronouns in this essay strictly for recognition’s sake and because i’m mostly talking about the show’s depiction of kenny), he sees femininity as safe and comforting, but nevertheless very powerful. (remember that his mother, while not super feminine, is a very outspoken and aggressive woman who calls stuart out on his shit constantly.) and what’s a better combination of femininity and power than a magical girl? 

also one thing i want to note real quick is that karen still refers to kenny as her sister in the stick of truth despite not being super involved in their game which i personally choose to read as Trans Rights Subtext

this is how we get lady mccormick / princess kenny, who is largely a passive character during the black friday trilogy, sitting upon her throne and cutely commenting on the surroundings while stan translates for her. then when sony takes her in, she becomes the star of her own show, a magical japanese princess who doesn’t take shit from cartman or his army and gets whatever she wants because she’s a cute little girl and now she gets to be protected and doted upon! also she speaks japanese and is not muffled in the slightest despite wearing her parka....symbolism? and really interestingly is that when she supposedly dies, she brushes herself off and immediately revives, declaring that she’s okay. in kenny’s feminine fantasy, she doesn’t suffer when she dies, and revives without any mess at all. princess kenny is always gonna be okay!

PK is also very flirty and overly sexual. it’s no secret that kenny is very interested in and knowledgeable of sex. he also absolutely worships women’s bodies, as seen with his views of heaven and that whole plot of “major boobage.” i don’t even read this as lust, because he’s ten, but sheer fascination with sex. maybe it plays into that whole “growing up too fast” concept where he tries to indulge in the “fun” parts of adulthood to make up for the exhaustion of caregiving, but this has been a thing since before kenny was depicted as a real caregiver so IDK. 

anyway, i think PK is also a way for kenny to experiment with flirting and sex, particularly with other boys. she uses her coyness and, in the games, her bare chest to entice boys. her cuteness also attracts grown men in “titties and dragons” which goes largely unremarked upon, which is a bit uncomfortable but still works with the idea that she’s the most “lovable” form of kenny. she also apparently thinks the new kid is “cute.” iit’s really funny to me how kenny is depicted as interested in strictly girls while princess kenny only focuses on boys, which could support the idea that PK is a separate entity from kenny, or that kenny just needs to figure himself out. either way, i imagine kenny finds some thrill in getting men to pay attention to them when their male friends often treat her as superfluous, and even then it often involves objectifying herself (this also tracks with their behavior in “fat camp”). it’s kind of sad if you think about it.

in the climax of the stick of truth, princess kenny has her own in-depth backstory, where she was an orc/elf rejected by both the elves and humans. i think this reflects kenny’s feeling of being “othered” as non-human (since this game chronologically comes after the superhero trilogy) and just generally not feeling welcome among their friends unless they need her. there may also be some parallels between her friends denying her the right to be a princess and kenny’s friends refusing to believe in his immortality. when she rebels against her friends choosing the stick over friendship, it’s another way for kenny to cope with their mixed-to-negative feelings about their friends. so while PK is a figure to be doted on, she’s still probably more gutsy than the kenny we usually know. 

however, PK is not entirely selfish or apathetic about the world around her. in the opening of “a song of ass and fire,” her inner monologue explains her choice to deflect to the PS4 side as the side she believes “is best for all.” she also laments that everybody, including her parents, will be fighting on black friday. it seems that PK dreads the mere idea of war, which contradicts mysterion’s tendency to use violence as a means to protect others. PK still uses her adorableness to help her team, and only asks that they accept her, which really isn’t much. it’s just when she, you know, becomes a nazi zombie and puts the world in danger because she’s so pissed about not being accepted for who she is. 

in my original post, i used the freudian personality theory to explain these three personas, which i regret because i fucking hate freud and he’s heavily responsible for modern consumerism and planned obsolescence. but the basic concepts of the id, ego, and superego do kind of illustrate what i’m getting at with these guys. i assigned princess kenny as the id, because she’s more about self-gratification and getting what she thinks she deserves as well as a tendency towards sexual gratification, and mysterion as the superego (hehe get it super) because of his strong inclination towards morality. however, this isn’t that black-and-white, as princess kenny has some moral considerations and mysterion has violent impulses (the “aggressive instinct”) that are more easily attributed to the id. nevertheless, it seems that kenny is still the balance between these exaggerated personas, and when he expresses attitudes similar to theirs, they are far more downplayed due to the necessities of his situation as a caretaker and an underappreciated friend. kind of makes you wonder if/how the attitudes of mysterion and princess kenny will manifest in him when he’s older.

I’m gonna post a book list because I rarely can pay attention to books, but I grew up loving them. These are the books that held me in, even though I have a short attention span. The way they let me feel smart bc of social commentary and whatnot but are still fiction books that a ten yr old can fall in love w,, they’re all just so perfect

The mistborn trilogy

The realistic way magic is built in to society, it’s hated and fought against but still used as a political tool. I fucking hated the romance aspect- it turned it into a shitty male written book in a lot of ways. But you have to look past that to see it’s a rlly great commentary through fiction on society. Bc we live in a society ya know.

Golden compass (his dark materials)

Fucking iconic. I grew up on this shit, it formed me into who I am today. I’m going to reread it again soon because it’s so,, raw? The perspective of children on politics and murder is so beautiful. And the 2nd and 3rd books, though less well known, so fucking good.

The book thief.

This was honestly the first good book I read. It’s fairly mainstream now, but my mom was a shitty mom and I saw the typewriter keys on it and the dominoes, and remembered playing dominoes and seeing her typewriter key bracelets. It made me feel close to her. But then I read it again and again and it was so beautiful and true, and the way it’s written from the perspective of death, because death class it’s way in to every single aspect of our lives, and he was so,, impartial to everything. That book is so fucking good. I was six when I first read it, and didn’t understand any of it, and I still fell in love.

The Artemis fowl series

Ok I hear there’s a movie coming out soon that is going to ruin it all so please don’t watch that, these books are genius. I only read a few in elementary school, all out of order so I never rlly understood the characters fully but. It’s so good. Artemis is the definition of an anti hero. He a little bitch for the first few books, all he wants is money and he happens to do some good while he’s at it. It had a lot of diverse characters (which the movie is whitewashing)

omg I love your book recommendations list you just wrote! the more and more I hear about the stormlight archives the more I want to read it, but I've just got the Mistborn book and I'm going to read them first, what do you think of them? I know some people have had an issue with the women in that trilogy but I did see Sanderson himself talking on reddit or something about it how he's trying to write better or something. he seems like he's generally getting better I think. so I'm looking forward to stormlight archives when I get to it.

also, have you read Wide Sargasso Sea? one of my favourite books that's based off Jane Eyre! the relationship between Rochester and his first wife.

I really enjoyed Mistborn tbh! I’ve only read the first trilogy, but I think for the most part women were handled well because 1) I’m pretty sure Sanderson purposefully set out to write a good female lead and imo it shows even if it misses the mark sometimes, like I’m pretty fond of Vin and was invested in her story the whole time, and 2) there’s definitely things to criticize about Mistborn’s portrayal of women, but I’ve seen much worse, and I actually think Sanderson’s Warbreaker is what deserves the most scrutiny in this aspect (it’s one of my faves of his because of the world building and because one of the only other cosmere characters that holds a candle to Kaladin is in it) but anyway enjoyable as it was it was also most blatantly misogynistic and I live in fear that one day a friend I’ve mentioned the cosmere to a ton of times will finally cave in and choose to start with Warbreaker of all things! 😭 (semi joking) (ideologically/morally speaking Warbreaker is just not Sanderson at his best even if I love a good chunk of the book)

Anyway you’re right! Sanderson is very open with his fans and admits to old biases and prejudices showing in his earlier books, and his improvement shows in his writing which I think is the most important thing! Mistborn era/trilogy 1 is a really nice starting place, I’m still very very fond of the characters and I think that’s why I haven’t moved on to Mistborn era/trilogy 2 yet 🤧 Era 1 is a solid adventure and while I didnt love the direction the plot went at times (and did not dig certain character deaths! 😑) it was an overall absorbing time and I might buy the trilogy sometime. It should be noted that Mistborn draws attention to the existence of sexual violence but it’s never described or at the forefront of the plot, Sanderson in general just doesn’t really go there.

Also no I haven’t managed to get my hands on a copy of Wide Sargasso Sea yet! 😭 I really wanna, but my library doesn’t have it in any digitized format 😔 I know you said it’s one of your favorites but if you wanna expand on that and tell me more of your (non-spoilery) thoughts on WSS I’m all ears! 👀👂🏽 no one I know irl has read it I don’t think 🤔 I do have my eyes on an ebook version of Mr. Rochester by Sarah Shoemaker, another Jane Eyre prequel I hope to read when school gets off my back. I have noooo idea if it’s gonna be good or not though, I’d never heard of it before when I stumbled upon it abzhsbs. The only other Jane Eyre inspired book I’ve tried to read was The Eyre Affair and while the premise was fascinating, I couldn’t stand the prose or characters so I dropped it qgshshshshh

As for fantasy faves! A majority of them are like fairytale/folklore retellings/inspired, I actually haven’t read as much high fantasy as I wish I had yet 😰 (feel free to drop some recs in my ask box if you have any 👀) anyway: Keturah and Lord Death and Sleepless, which I mentioned in the last ask, Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett (first book of the Founders Trilogy, an insanely fun ride, Sanderson himself left a good review on it and the world building in it is similarly lush as in Sanderson’s works! Definitely darker than almost anything Sanderson has ever written but I loved that), Till We Have Faces by CS Lewis (Cupid and Psyche retelling), The Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix (Sabriel, the first book, is still an all time fave), Tamora Pierce’s Beka Cooper trilogy and Circle of Magic series are old faves too, Damsel by Elana K. Arnold (🚨PROCEED WITH CAUTION🚨 it’s nauseatingly graphic and deals with repeated sexual assault, I think the end makes it worth it but others might understandably disagree. It’s a dark subversion/exploration of the whole ‘knight rescues maiden from tower and they get married’ trope), N. K. Jemisin’s Dreamblood Duology (definitely buying this eventually!!) and Egg & Spoon by Gregory Maguire was very solid and fun from what I remember.

I also rec T. Kingfisher’s short story collections Jackalope Wives and Other Stories and Toad Words and Other Stories (some of the works in both books are free online! So if you want a taste of her work def look up T Kingfisher short stories) and I’ve also read Bryony and Roses by her, which I remember enjoying but it’s been a while. Also Helen Oyeyemi’s work is rlly fun and gorgeously written, and in general has lots of fairytale references (out of the books I’ve read so far at least! Which are only Boy, Snow, Bird and Mr. Fox but I have the audiobook for Gingerbread checked out and the one for Peaces on hold)

When did you get into them: I remember I started really to go crazy over him in July or August last year, but I believe it was probably earlier. But I first got to know him two years earlier.  3. An addition from Helen which I 100% agree with: This has caused, at least for me, a tendency to not talk, not talk a lot in fear of oversharing, or feel I should feel bad for allowing something to get so close to my heart. Unhealthy, addiction, it’s bad for you, okay! Okay! WE GET IT!!!…..are just some of the things I’ve experienced. The feelings they give….is so pure, so good, nothing can really compare. I’m supposed to just…wallow in despair, separated from my light? That can’t be right. I hope this can demonstrate some of that.

A small addition from me: I find it painful how ignortant &nasty can people be. I never understood those people - seeing others talk about what’s important for them is such a great &pure thing &I love seeing how happy does the thing make them!!
