except people did pull the lever. The 2024 US Presidential election had the second highest voter turnout out of any election in US history (2nd only to the highest turnout out in 2020).
People did show up. People made that hard choice. PEOPLE PULLED THE FUCKING LEVER. But it wasn’t enough. Because even if the paltry amount voters who voted for the most popular liberal/leftists 3rd party candidates (0.56% for Stein, de la Cruz, 0.11%) voted for Kamala then KAMALA STILL WOULD NOT HAVE WON.
There was no state that Trump won that could’ve been overturned “if only” 3rd party voters would’ve flipped to Kamala. None. Zero. Go look at the numbers yourself. No race was even close enough to warrant any recounts. And even without the Electoral College, Trump got 49.80% of the popular vote and Kamala got 48.32%.
If the two most popular leftist 3rd party candidates hadn’t run and all of their votes went to Kamala instead, she would’ve gotten 48.99% of the popular vote. Which is almost a full 1% less than Trump and also not a close enough margin to call for a recount because that 1% represents over 1.6 MILLION voters.
And if the two most popular right wing 3rd party candidates hadn’t run and their votes went to Trump, then he would’ve gotten 50.29% of the popular vote.
So as much as it fucking sucks, we have to accept the bitter pill that Trump won the popular vote AND the Electoral College outright.
I understand it’s easier to blame other “good people” for “not showing up” or “voting wrong” than to face the reality that even with the 2nd highest voter turnout out in US history, the fascist right party got the most votes. That’s demoralising as fuck. I get it.
And I understand that it’s easier to blame people on your own side for not “pulling their weight” because that’s the narrative that’s been pushed and we’re all susceptible to propaganda.
But why is this particular narrative being pushed? 1. Because the Democrats know they are losing footing and they are scared of the party fracturing so they are leaning hard into group think and us v them tactics on all fronts, and 2. Because it benefits the conservative right to have us all in-fighting while we’re also trying to fight with them.
So all this talk about people dissenting from the Democratic Party platform being the “real problem” benefits the left AND the right. And unfortunately liberals and leftists have been falling for it hook line and sinker.
But the good news is you can stop! You can choose differently. Right now. Tomorrow. Whenever you’re ready. But you can.
Because the left’s “real problem” is not other leftists. It’s not the fact that we’re all obsessed with micromanaging each other’s thoughts/behaviours/actions. It’s fucking fascism. That’s the problem. And we need to stop talking about each other and start throwing wrenches in the works of all these fascist machines being built before we are ALL run down by them.
So, please. Stop talking about other leftists. Stop fighting with and blaming other leftists. Deescalate all conflict that is not with a fascist and go be inconvenient to your local fascist movements today.
I feel like there's a certain type of "ex-evangelical" progressive who obviously supports mandatory progressive causes like abortion access and LGBT rights, but then in practice supports them "so strongly" that they can't compromise on anything. And if that means that they can't vote for candidates who support those issues because they aren't "good enough" and those issues get set back, well... That's a trade-off they're willing to make!
