Licik - a Shadowhunters fanfic

In which Alec discovers he’s... not the biggest fan of snakes. A/N: ‘Licik’ is Malay for ‘cunning.’ Also, this fic is inspired by my cousin, who at around ten years old, didn’t know he was afraid of snakes - until he had one around his neck, at which point he promptly passed out. <3

Shortly after sending Camille to the Gard, Magnus makes another trip to India, and returns holding a medium-sized box covered by an ornately embroidered piece of red silk. ‘Question, Alexander,’ he says, before Alec even has a chance to say welcome back. The portal snaps shut behind him. ‘How do you feel about snakes?’

Alec frowns in confusion. ‘Snakes? I don’t know – to be honest, I don’t have a lot of experience with them.’ The penny drops, and he gives Magnus a suspicious look. ‘Why?’

In answer, Magnus removes the silk cover with a flourish, revealing a very large cobra slowly moving around a transparent carry-case. ‘This is Licik,’ he explains, smiling fondly down at the serpent. ‘He was a gift for Camille many years ago, and now that she isn’t around to take care of him, I felt I should.’ His eyes get a faraway, wistful look for a moment, and Alec isn’t jealous, per se – but one of these days, he really must ask Magnus what he saw in Camille, because Alec’s impression of her hadn’t exactly been relationship material. But the moment passes quickly, Magnus’ attention returning to the here and now. ‘He won’t have as much space here as at her mansion, of course, but I expect this apartment will still provide ample slithering room. Shall I introduce the two of you?’

‘Okay,’ Alec says, smiling at the way Magnus’ face lights up. He watches as Magnus slides back the lid of the carry-case, cooing a little as he gently lifts the snake out. ‘Wait,’ Alec says, some of his earlier confusion returning. ‘I thought you and Camille ended things a long time ago. How long do snakes live?’ ‘Oh, you’re right, an ordinary snake would surely have perished by now,’ Magnus explains, slowly advancing on Alec. ‘But I enchanted our friend here in various ways, one of which was bathing the egg for an entire lunar cycle in the stinging cells of Turritopsis dohrnii.’ At Alec’s uncomprehending stare, he clarifies, ‘The immortal jellyfish.’ Alec blinks. ‘There are immortal jellyfish?’ ‘Of course. You didn’t think we land-based creatures had a monopoly on eternity, did you?’ He chuckles. He’s right in front of Alec now, and the snake lifts its head towards the unfamiliar scent in curiosity, tongue flickering. ‘In any case, Licik here is unlikely to live forever, but I believe he has a good century in him yet – providing he’s well-cared for, of course.’ Magnus lifts the snake, hesitating just for a moment. ‘Oh – another thing. He breathes fire, but only a little, and rarely at anyone.’ Alec feels his eyes go wide, but he nods. Magnus slowly places the snake around his neck. ‘Okay. Say hello, you two.’

‘Hello, Licik,’ Alec responds – and if he wasn’t distracted by the way his heart was suddenly beating a little faster, he might feel silly for talking to a snake. ‘Wow, you’re a- you’re a big fella, aren’t you?’ He laughs a little, then clears his throat, not sure why his voice got all high-pitched there for a moment, and really, big fella? The snake pulls up its head towards him, and he gently redirects it. ‘Woah, easy there,’ he says, and there’s that nervous-sounding laughter again, and he tries to slow his breathing, tries not to picture the snake wrapping all the way around his throat, and how heavy is this thing anyway because the hand that’s holding its head is shaking-

The snake lets out a little puff of flames, and that’s it. ‘Nope, no no no nope- M-Magnus, Magnus, get it off of me-‘ His panicked babbling ceases as Magnus snaps his fingers, and the weight disappears from Alec’s neck. A quick glance confirms that the snake is back in its carry-case, the lid firmly shut, but Alec shivers and takes an involuntary step back anyway, almost tripping over the sofa. Magnus’ hand comes up to his shoulder as if to steady him, resting there gently. ‘All right, all right – it’s okay, he’s gone. Breathe, Alexander, okay?’

Alec does as he’s told, taking a deep breath in and letting it out in a whoosh. Now that the moment’s over, he can feel his cheeks starting to go red, and he looks away from Magnus’ half-amused, half-worried expression. ‘Okay. I’m okay.’ He stares at the floor, silently berating himself. He’s a Shadowhunter, for god’s sake; what’s he doing freaking out over a little reptile? A pet, no less? Okay, sure – a magic, part-immortal, fire-breathing pet. But still. ‘I’m sorry.’

‘You’ve nothing to be sorry for,’ Magnus says, a hint of mirth still in his gentle words. ‘I’m guessing that you aren’t the biggest fan of snakes, then?’ Alec shakes his head minutely, still not looking up – until Magnus gently places two fingers under his chin, raising his head up so their gazes meet. ‘Alexander,’ he says, and the amusement is gone, leaving only warmth. ‘Are you embarrassed?’ Alec knows his silence is as good as an answer, and Magnus’ face creases in sympathy and understanding. ‘My dear Alexander,’ he says patiently, teasingly. ‘You spend almost every day doing battle with things that most people dare not even dream of. Do you really think that I – or anyone else, for that matter – would think any less of you for finding one thing you’re afraid of?’

The words are reassuring in their logic and kindness, and Alec gives a half-smile in capitulation. ‘No. I guess not.’ ‘Exactly.’ Magnus leans in and gives him a soft peck on the lips, a glint of humour returning. ‘Actually, I think it’s kind of adorable.’

Alec’s smile spreads, and he reaches up to his shoulder to place his hand over Magnus’. ‘Okay. Point taken.’ His eyes stray to the snake again, and rather than fear, he feels a pang of regret. He doesn’t like the feeling that he’s ruining Magnus’ plans, especially since Magnus clearly cares about the snake. ‘So what are you going to do with him? If-‘ Alec takes another breath before continuing – ‘if you wanted to keep him, obviously, it’s your apartment. And I could probably get used to him,’ he says, hoping he sounds more confident of that than he feels.

Magnus laughs. ‘Ah, see? There’s that famous bravery I was talking about.’ He clasps his hands at the nape of Alec’s neck, and Alec returns the loose embrace, looping his arms around Magnus’ waist. ‘But no, I don’t think that will be necessary. I’d much rather have your company than Licik’s, and I wouldn’t want you to feel uncomfortable here. Perhaps I’ll ask Simon to take care of him,’ he says thoughtfully, but there’s a spark of mischief in his eyes. ‘He seemed quite fond of Licik when they met the other day.’

Alec leans in again, and they kiss for a little longer this time. ‘If you’re sure,’ he says, needing the confirmation, and Magnus nods. ‘Okay. Thank you.’

With a flick of the wrist, Magnus banishes the snake from the room. Alec never sees it again, and honestly, he’s kind of grateful for that.

Riley Brooks is a waitress in a ‘Dive bar” in New York. One Saturday night, her past comes back to haunt her as some unfamiliar punters enter her bar on a bachelor party- one of them being someone who she was once close to.

“I’m Bastien, Prince Liam’s and King Constantine’s royal guard. It’s finally nice to put a beautiful face to the name. You’re all Drake’s ever spoken about all these years. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”

Drake’s eyes widened at his father figure- pleading for him not to elaborate. First Maxwell, now Bast- for fuck sake, he muttered- hoping no one could hear him.

“Oh... nice to meet you too.”

Bastien hugged Riley tight, eyeing her up and down. He was delighted by her presence and had hoped that Drake would never let her go again. To be honest he was annoyed by Drake’s melancholy attitude for the last few years. Bastien had offered to visit New York with him on many occasions when he was off duty- to help him restore his love life. However, Drake due to his stubbornness refused assuming she would have moved on- possibly be married, have children and possibly will have forgotten all about his existence.

“I think it’s time we all head back... we all have an early start in the morning with the court travelling to Lythikos. Olivia wouldn’t be too thrilled if we are all late.”

Liam could foresee how awkward this conversation would turn- thankfully the others agreed. Taking a steady walk back- Drake held Riley back.

“I’ll walk you to your room. I’m so sorry for tonight...”

“Why are you sorry?” Riley questioned- she enjoyed the walk down memory lane demolishing her favourite dessert, she couldn’t understand why he would be apologising.

“Max talking about us getting engaged... Bast informing you that all I did was talk about you- I did. But it’s embarrassing. I could never get you out of my mind no matter how much I tried.”

Drake avoided Riley’s gaze not wanting to view her reaction, he spoke about her everyday. Kiara was throwing herself at him constantly. Liam and Maxwell had taken him out on the ‘pull’ many times but he refused to acknowledge any women. He was nothing without Riley.

“Likewise, I just wish you would have reached out earlier. Not leaving it so many years. I guess I’ll see you at Lythikos then. Night Drake. I love you.”

Riley pecked him on the cheek, holding him tightly. It killed her having to leave him every night. Due to the circumstances they couldn’t jeopardise anything for the sake of everyone involved.

“Wait! Why did you avoid the bit about being engaged?” Drake wondered. Did she ignore it because she never wanted to be married or because she may want it too in the future?

“Because Walker, that’s not you. You’re a grump. Not a sappy person- it took you seven years to buy me some flowers. I don’t think that you’re the marriage material. And I’m fine with that. I don’t know what the deal in Cordonia is regarding marriage- but in New York many people just live happily together. I mean look at Lo and Daniel- they aren’t engaged after all these years. Sorry I didn’t mean to mention them....”

“You don’t know what I want in life Riley, so please don’t try to think you do! I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Drake stormed off into his room, slamming the door nearly taking it off its hinges. Feeling guilty that he hadn’t spoilt her in past, or showered her with gifts to prove how much he loved her. He was frustrated that she believed that he didn’t want to ever be married. Opening the drawer in his bedside table- he admired his grandmothers ring. The one he had told Maxwell he would have given to Riley. Looks like you will be here for eternity- the dust covering you, because my girl won’t ever want to wear you. I’m sorry Gran.

Closing the drawer gently, he laid back on his bed, placing his hands behind his head, sighing. Sitting up he poured himself a tumbler of whiskey- he noticed his phone light up.

Drake? I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings. I don’t want us to argue. Please text me back. X

Drake woke up the following morning- he hated Olivia and he hated Lythikos. He didn’t read the last text Riley had sent him- he decided to drink himself into oblivion instead and was now regretting how he acted. Shooting out of bed he headed straight to Riley’s room, not giving a shit at who saw him.

“Max? Where is she?” Drake demanded, if anyone knew where she would be it would be the person who was sponsoring her in this sham.

“I... I don’t know? All her things have gone.”

Drake’s heart sunk- thinking the last time they spoke it was a petty argument. The two men decided to scrutinise the palace searching for her.

Riley woke up in Hana’s bed after a spontaneous sleepover. She was grateful that Hana had let her stay. After explaining what had happened, Hana tried to comfort her friend. Hana had an inkling deep down that Drake wanted to propose and that Maxwell was testing the water. She obviously didn’t inform Riley of her suspicions with the state that she was in, when she knocked on the door in the early hours.

“Do you need me to let the Beaumont’s know where you are? You can come with me if you want- but I assume Max will want you to travel with him seen as though Bertrand isn’t going?”

“I’ll just come with you Hana, if you don’t mind. I’ll let Max know.”

Riley quickly text Maxwell, before beginning to pack for their short break to the coldest Duchy in the country.

Thank god you’re okay Blossom. 😘 Okay, we will meet you there. You ladies stay safe. Erm, Drake came to your room looking for you. What shall I say? 🤔 X

Nothing. He ignored my last text. He’s a stubborn mother fucker 😡..excuse my language. If he wants to talk he can talk to me later. 😞X

Maxwell had informed Drake that Riley was safe and that she had just stayed with Hana. Drake slowly exhaled, he was now relieved that she hadn’t left them. His heartbeat slowly returned back to normal. Max felt guilty that he was the tip of the iceberg that had possibly caused this argument between the two lovers. Providing a soft smile to Drake, he pat him on shoulder- she would never leave us- leave you Drake. Travel with me to Olivia’s.

The men arrived at Lythikos, Maxwell was immediately scrutinising the area hoping to find his sponsor. Drake kept his head down- feeling like he had fucked up his chances with Riley again.

“Drake there she is. Wow! Look at Hana, she’s amazing!”

Drake looked towards the ice rink- of course Hana looked amazing, pirouetting on the ice gracefully. She is a very talented noble- even if she denied it. Then his gaze fixated on Riley, his beautiful Riley. Hana was attempting to teach her some tricks on the ice- Drake laughed at how terrible Riley was. He detested ice skating - but natural instinct told him to join them. Before he put one foot in front of the other- he noticed Liam catch Riley in his arms. Jealously shot through his heart, he needed to talk to her alone - he also knew she needed to keep up the facade.

“Max I’m going to head to the slopes, I’ll see you all up there when you hang your tutus up.” Drake said sarcastically, hoping Maxwell would assume that he was just ready to complete in ‘manly’ activities instead. In reality he was pining for Riley.

“Okay buddy.”

Liam noticed Riley stumble, and shot into action saving her as if he was superman. Helping her regain her balance, he stood frozen just admiring her beauty.

“I’m sorry Liam! I’m not as good as Hana, I’m such a klutz. Thank you for helping me.”

“You’re welcome Lady Riley. Are you okay?”

“Yes! Why wouldn’t I be?” Riley said defensively assuming he would know about her domestic with Drake.

“I was just wondering that’s all. Have you seen Drake? I haven’t seen him yet.”

“NO! I mean, no I haven’t.” Riley snapped before concealing her anger. Sighing, she knew that Liam would be able to read her like an open book.

“Is everything okay between you two?”

Liam placed his finger under her chin, tilting it upwards- when their baby blues met he could tell by her expression that everything wasn’t as it seemed. After all, he had been brought up to read people’s expressions and body language. Cupping her cheek, she brushed him off immediately. Before gazing to the ice below them, her teeth biting her lower lip. Liam’s hands drifted on to her hips- he knew he was with Olivia but there was something about Riley that he couldn’t remove from his mind.

“Yes... I mean no... I don’t know....It’s fine.”

“What’s happened?”

Liam was curious and pulled her closer to his broad chest- unexpectedly his hands rubbed her back before holding her protectively- wanting to do more. She sunk into his warmth embrace appreciating that he caught her preventing her making a laughing stock out of herself, but now he was there to comfort her- to talk to her as a friend.

“I don’t really know. When we returned to the palace last night. He apologised for what had happened... then he asked why I didn’t mention about Maxwell’s question about getting engaged. I said to him that he wasn’t marriage material and that people are happy just being together. Then he told me to stop assuming what he wanted in life and stormed off. I text him and he just kept saying everything was fine... but it isn’t- he didn’t put any kisses at the end of the text like he usually does. He didn’t even say love you back... I’m sorry for the rant.”

“Sounds about right for Drake. Don’t worry about it. He would be a fool to let you go again. You’re amazing you know that? You are beautiful.”

Liam caressed her cheek, fixating his gaze on her. She is beautiful, what does she see in Drake? - he thought. This time she didn’t brush him away- he gently wiped her tears away that were falling slowly down her cheeks. For the first time she looked directly into his eyes, their breaths both becoming heavier. He knew she had no feelings towards him but he couldn’t resist - he couldn’t fight against his thoughts that were going through him. Moving closer to her, their foreheads were close to touching. He was now inches away from brushing her cherry buds. She was frozen, not knowing what to do or what was happening. Politely she removed his hands, she was with Drake. No matter how much her heart was fluttering at this moment in time.

“I should go... I need to talk to Maxwell. Thank you again for helping me.”

“Lady Riley? No need to thank me. And there are other options other than Drake.”

Riley ignored his smirk and wink, she knew exactly what he meant. The option she wanted was Drake Walker. If she couldn’t have that option- she would return immediately back to New York. Riley found Maxwell and apologised for her midnight flit. Gently smiling at her, he was just relieved that she was safe. Shortly after informing her that they were all heading up the slopes. When Riley and Maxwell eventually reached the top she couldn’t believe how breathtaking the view was.

“Hey, beautiful.”

Riley ignored Drake, she wasn’t a pushover. She wanted to talk the previous night- he chose not to. So it was her turn to be stubborn - turning her head she spoke to Maxwell instead.

“Fancy a race Max?”

“Sure thing...” Maxwell said hesitantly after noticing the awkward tension between Drake and Riley.

“Be careful Beaumont. She’s a cheater when it comes to races. She has cunning techniques...”

“I do not!” Riley turned towards Drake- folding her arms, scowling at him as if looks could kill. He was just smirking at her. She loved him but at times he irritated her so much that she wanted to wipe that smirk off his face.

“At least you responded to me. I’m sorry for last night. I’m a jerk. As always. I don’t deserve you. You wasn’t in the wrong for anything. It was all me. I let my emotions get to me.”

“Why? I don’t understand why a good night turned so sour?”

“When Max brought up the engagement thing... I ... I love you ... and I want....”

Before Drake could finish Maxwell pushed Riley down the slopes with him closely following. Drake shook his head in frustration, and quickly caught up to them whizzing straight past Liam and Olivia, spraying them with snow. Drake noticed that Riley and Maxwell were heading straight towards a large branch, attempting to get their attention there was no response. Riley noticed the branch too late- both her and Maxwell went flying over it somersaulting in sync. Drake caught up, to the two of them and immediately removed his skis.

“Ri are you hurt? Max?”

“I’m unscathed buddy. I’m like an ally cat- 9 lives and that...”

“I’m fine.” She said, her eyebrows furrowed whilst rubbing her left hand that was now in excruciating pain.

“You’re not fine. You’re hurt. Let me carry you into the chalet.”

“Touché Drake. Just like everything was fine with you last night but it wasn’t! I’m fine. Just don’t fuss over me. Please.”

“I’m going to fuss over you. You’re my girl, I love you. Please just let me carry you over to the chalet and get some ice for your hand.”

Riley huffed, as she knew she was fighting a losing battle. Drake effortlessly picked Riley up, cradling her. Hurrying to the chalet- he laid her gently on the couch, and immediately attended to her injury.

After seeing to Riley’s hand he lifted it up to his lips, kissing it ever so gently- hoping his touch would take away the pain. As he placed her hand back down, thoughts wondered what his grandmothers ring would look like on her finger. Sitting next to her he wrapped his strong arm around her shoulder pulling her into his warm embrace, gently rubbing her injured hand. She snuggled into his chest, holding on tightly to his denim jacket- hearing his heart beat ten to the dozen. Her stomach and heart fluttered as they just held each other- content in each other’s presence. His touch made her forget the argument, forget the pain after the fall and forget about how close Liam was to kissing her- his touch made the room feel warmer along with the fire that was burning.

“Thank you.” Riley broke the silence.

“What for?”

“For helping me, for just being you. I love you Drake.”

“I love you too. So much. Just slap me next time I behave like I did last night. Fancy sneaking out? There’s something I want to show you.” Mischief was in his eyes, his infamous smirk had returned.

“But what about Liv? She will kill us.” Drake saw fear in her eyes and laughed it off. Surely she wasn’t scared of Olivia. If she was Drake was by her side- her protector.

“Fuck her. I don’t like her. The feelings mutual.” Drake shrugged his shoulders, not really caring what Olivia thought- she would most likely be shacked up with Liam anyway.

Drake led her outside holding her protectively as they trudged through the snow. Eventually they arrived at the spot, in the middle of nowhere- he gestured her to lay on the floor next to him. Riley was hesitating at first - the floor was damp, cold and covered in snow- did he want her to get pneumonia? Putting his arm around her, that intoxicating touch made her less tense. She melted into him. The warmth from his body- made the cold night air non existent.

“M’lady, look upwards.”

Riley followed his instructions. As she looked up she saw the second breathtaking view that Lythikos offered, her jaw was agape from the shock at how something so simple could take her breath away. The stars scattered with shooting stars lighting up the sky.

“Drake, this is gorgeous!”

“Not as gorgeous as you. I used to stargaze with Savannah all the time when we was younger.”

“Have you heard from her yet?”

Riley knew briefly about Savannah, Drake had told her a story about how his little sister disappeared without letting anyone know- he never elaborated on the true events. Instead he just insisted that one day he would find her even if he died trying. Even though Riley felt sorry for Drake at the time, she couldn’t now as he did exactly the same to her.

“No. I let her down. I let you down. I feel useless that I couldn’t look after the two people who mean the most to me.”

“You didn’t let me down. I understand- but I thought we had a future together and you just left. If you had of reached out and told me the truth I’d have understood back then. We could have kept in touch.”

“I am so sorry. I’ve regretted my decision all these years. Hence why I spoke about you to Bastien and Liam all the time. I was hurt and I know you would have been too. On the slopes before... I wanted to confess something before Maxwell pushed you...”

Riley looked confused. Wondering what he needed to ‘confess’. Her mind was working overtime. Panicked, not knowing what it was. Did he see her and Liam on the ice rink? A lump formed in her throat. Her heartbeat increased. Impatiently waiting for Drake to continue she held his hand tight - hoping she was overthinking the situation.

“I... when we came to New York for Liam’s bachelor party. We took Liam to the Statue of Liberty. It was something that he has always wanted to do- I tried to convince him to do something else- but obviously he’s a Prince and it was his escape from all of this. I wasn’t myself- that place was the last time I saw you. Maxwell asked me what was on my mind... I.. I told him about you. I told him that you was the one for me- that I imagined having a future with you... that I wanted to give you my grandmothers engagement ring...”

Riley now realised the reasoning behind Maxwell’s ‘random’ question, and the reasoning behind Drake’s outburst last night. Feeling guilty about how she said he wasn’t marriage material, she didn’t know how to react. It all now made sense.

“Drake...”

“It’s fine Riley. I know where we stand. I’m just happy to have you in my life.”

“You... you want to marry me?” Reality had finally sunk in. This man adored her. He loved her. And she never realised. Maybe she should have made more effort to contact him all those years ago- rather than just blame him.

Drake stood up, helping Riley to stand too. Cupping her cheeks he stared into her baby blues. He needed to knock his strong walls down, pretend they didn’t exist and tell her exactly how he felt about her.

“Riley Brooks, when we was together I felt complete. I felt loved. I know we wasn’t together a long time- it felt right and things are worth the wait. The first kiss. The first time we slept together. Every moment was precious. It felt like we had been together for an eternity. I want a future with you. I never moved on from you. I couldn’t. I love you, and it’ll always be you. I do want to marry you. I want children with you. Call me crazy.... But I know what I want and I want you.”

The winds have arrived early, in fact our magnetic field cracked just before midnight (UK) and the winds began pouring through. Nothing too strong, nice and easy at present however I’m sure many of you felt the switch.

Sleep becomes more tricky simply because we are processing more light and our cells get to work on the remodelling of the codes, regardless of what time it is, if the work needs to be done then it shall be done and us mere mortals have just one instruction.

SURRENDER

Any moans or complaints is a direct block to Source, a request to fall back to the sleepy human state, so in order to stay open and allow we honour the process, we limit our human DOing and we allow in to our fields that which is of love, assistance and compassion.

And this wave holds the energy of PURGE.

This may manifest within your reality, the physical contradictions leave, it could be within your body, ailments tend to speak for your attention, night sweats, dreams etc.

Finding Contentment Within the Wait

Before we begin, I think it is important for you to understand where I fall in this “category”. I am currently single…I have been for the past 14 years. I honestly had no desire to ever get married, and since I didn’t want marriage the thought of dating was not appealing either. But God…He has a way of rerouting our hearts and minds to align with His plans when the pursuit of getting to know Him is our primary focus. About 5 years ago my heart began to change…I started seeing myself as a wife. The desire to love and be an encouragement and helpmate to my husband was very apparent. This was so strange considering I was certain I was one who was called to be single. At first I thought that because my heart had changed, that must mean that my future husband was right around the corner. Well, as I have learned in my walk with the Lord, He doesn’t do details…He’s a BIG picture kind of guy. He will show us glimpses, ignite a passion, grow us in a manner suited for His calling for us…but He won’t just layout the whole plan from start to finish. God is more interested in our trusting obedience than He is easing our discomfort of the unknown. How else can He teach us how to walk by faith?

So, now that you understand that I too am waiting for my future spouse, we can embark on this journey of trust, faith, and growing in our relationship with our King together.

I have a deep sense of compassion for my fellow singleton’s out there. Is it because I too am single? Maybe. I don’t know why God has given me a strong desire to encourage and love on others who are single. He gifts us with things that He trusts us to use in service of others. I love God’s word. It’s the foundation I measure everything against. It gives us direction, reminds us of all of God’s promises, corrects us when we are in misstep with Him, teaches us new things every day about God’s love story written for us and God’s character. But the thing I love most about it, it is pure truth. I know that every single word is God breathed (2 Tim. 3:16), so when I read the words on the page I know that those words are just as infallible as my Mighty Heavenly Father. To that point, when I read Psalm 37:4; “Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart”, it gives me assurity that the desires of my heart are promised to me, so I have unshakeable encouragement and hope.

This verse can often be taken out of context, so I want to make sure that we understand the true meaning within this text. This doesn’t mean that God will give us whatever we want, not in the slightest. He loves us too much to do that. It means that as you grow in your relationship with Him, your hearts desires will begin to align with God’s will for your life. He sees all, knows all, He is as much in your past and future as He is in your present. Everything He wants for your life is the ABSOLUTE cream of the crop and He wants nothing more than for you to claim it. What does it look like to truly “delight ourselves” in the LORD? That means that we find our contentment, our joy, our peace, our comfort, our everything in Him alone. Not in what He gives us, but in HIM, in who HE is. We seek Him before and above everything else in our life. He is the Rock in which we build the foundation of our life. Truly delighting yourself in the LORD is knowing deep within every fiber of your being that if you were to lose everything you possess today, you would still be the richest person on earth because of the gift of your salvation, your eternal inheritance you have with and through Christ Jesus. “So we fix our eyes not of what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18.

Do you believe that? Do you feel that certainty in every fiber of your being? This is something you have to be sure about. Sit quietly with yourself and ask the Holy Spirit to search you and call out anything that is keeping you from believing this. Loved ones, God is GOOD, He is FAITHFUL, He is TRUSTWORTHY and therefore, worthy of all of our love and praise. One of His many promises to us is in Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus says:

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will He not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying ‘what shall we eat?’ or ‘what shall we drink?’ or ‘what shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

This passage shows the heart of our heavenly Father. There is nothing that we need that He would deny us. If we rest in Him we will always have everything we need…always. He is the Provider whom we worship, Who gives us our provision for which we are grateful for. The danger is when these two get twisted. When we worship the provision and are grateful for the Provider; that is when we experience greed, gluttony, lack, anxiety and discontentment. Temporary things will never fill a God-sized hole no matter how high a pedestal we build for them. Just a few verses back from the passage in Matthew above, Jesus speaks the truth about us and our wandering hearts. You see, we were created in His image and we were created with an innate need to worship. Whether you worship Who you were created for (God’s design), or you choose to worship other things such as your lifestyle, your career, money, vanity, material things, celebrities, your kids (ouch), and more specific to this post, the longed for husband or wife…you worship. All of these things that take God’s place are idols/false gods, things that we look towards to provide us with something we think we lack or need to be satisfied in this life. Please understand that these things are not bad in and of themselves, they are beautiful blessings from our loving Father. But it is where we place them in order of priority and focus that makes them bad (an idol). Anything that takes Jesus off of the throne of our hearts and lives (Satan’s plan) is our god no matter how big of a blessing we think it might be…harsh but true. When those things are the focus of our hearts, they are not in their proper place.

Whether you are aware of it or not, we all worship something with our lives…no exceptions. In Matthew 6:21 Jesus says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” The desires of your heart that are present when Jesus isn’t on the throne of your heart, they may not necessarily be God’s will for you. When we seek Him above all else our will and His will become one, there’s no kink in the hose of communication from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit reveals God’s will to us. We’re told this in 1 Corinthians 2:10; “these are the things God has revealed to us by His Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” God loves you too much to give you something outside of His will. He knows you better than you do, trust His leading and His timing. So ask yourself this question: What is your treasure? We need to make sure there are no kinks in the flow of communication.

This particular question/heart check was a surgical procedure of sorts for me, painful but necessary. I prayed Psalm 139:23-24 over myself and waited expectantly for the diagnosis. There is immense power when we pray God’s word back to Him. It’s the act of speaking His truth over ourselves and our struggles that removes the power they once had over us, cementing in our hearts the REAL truth.

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.’ (and then I added Matthew 6:21 paraphrased into prayer form)…Holy Spirit reveal the true treasures of my heart and if there is anything taking Your place. If there is anything that is not of You and Your will for my life, please cast it out.” In order for me to truly KNOW what the real desires God had placed in my heart were, I had to make sure God was in His proper place first. Look at it like a puzzle. You start with the corner pieces to begin framing the picture that will be revealed in the end, God’s will for you is much the same. You have to have the Cornerstone (Eph. 2:20) in place, the proper place, before the rest of the picture begins to reveal itself in His time.

Now that we have established the true context behind Psalm 37:4, we need to look at the other potential cause for discontentment in this season. If you have Jesus in His proper place and the desire of your heart is to be a husband or wife someday, and you find yourself feeling defeated, unworthy, unlovable, or anxious to get the show on the road then we need to check whether you BELIEVE Him. I know you believe IN Him…but you also need to BELIEVE Him. I believe that this hesitation in fellow believers is caused by a lie planted in the heart…maybe it’s been there for some time, but this lie is keeping you from living in contentment. Satan’s primary goal is to steal, kill, and destroy anything good in our lives and his primary strategy is by doing one or all of these things:

1. Keep you from believing IN Jesus Christ. 2. If you believe IN Jesus Christ, he will try to keep you from believing Him. (Who He is, His promises, His character, etc.) 3. Keep you from reading God’s word which is our blueprint for living in accordance to His will. 4. If you are reading it, he will try to keep you from believing it. 5. And last but not least, if you are reading it and you believe it, he will try to keep you from speaking it’s truth to others.

As a Christian, I am sure you have experienced at least one of these schemes. I know I have…but now I suit up in God’s armor (Eph. 6:10-18). The enemy is the father of lies. “…He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar, and the father of lies.” John 8:44

I struggled in the beginning with this. I believed IN Jesus, but I was struggling to BELIEVE that the way He sees me was my actual reality, and that His promises were still meant for me. I wasn’t an angel when I came to my stake in the ground moment. I was living my life for myself, indulging in worldly pleasures, and my relationship with God was about as indepth as the one I had with my Great Great Great Grandparents…non-existent. Why would a Holy and all Mighty God want to still pour out His blessings on me? (Lie #1) I’ve done far too many sinful things for my life to be useable and worthy of His best. (Lie #2)  I need to do everything I can to make sure I don’t sin, walk the holy walk so maybe God might see fit to give me a blessing every so often. (Lie #3)

Can anyone else relate to these thought patterns? This was the toxic script that was playing in my mind over and over whenever I looked at my life and saw what I didn’t have. In the beginning of my walk with Jesus I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I did not realize that these negative thought patterns were a scheme of the devil to keep me from believing God’s promises and believing God’s infallible character. I had a stronghold in my heart. Strongholds are any lie that puts a fortress within your heart that blocks or twist the truth of God’s word in and for our lives. They can only be destroyed through prayer with specific and intentional scripture. The examples of the ones I used for this very stronghold are:

• “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 10:5

• “But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation.” – Colossians 1:22

• “I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” – Ephesians 3:16-19

• “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” – Ephesians 3:20-21

• “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 1:6

• “There is now, no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” – Romans 8:1

• “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children of God, then heirs-heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.” – Romans 8:16-17 It’s just like Jesus said, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32. Search God’s word and find scripture that speaks truth about things you struggle with. I plan to write a post about this topic and go into more depth on how to wield this powerful weapon (the Sword of the Spirit).

If you believe that God is capable of placing a promise in your heart and then in the same instance be able to turn around and not fulfill that promise, you don’t know God’s character. “I wait for the LORD, my soul does wait. And in His word do I hope.” – Psalm 130:5 He is trustworthy to the nth degree. If He says it’s going to happen, then buckle up because it’s going to happen. It may not happen in the timeframe we expect or want, but it will happen. His timing is always perfect, His gifts are always the best, and He doesn’t do anything halfway. If you don’t have what you were promised right now, then you aren’t ready for it right now. God will grow us, shape us, remove undesirable things from us in order to prepare us for the blessing. If we aren’t in a good heart space to steward the gift well, then we will just wind up taking it for granted and treating it in a manner that’s unworthy of a gift from God. He knows when we are ready. Be grateful for the wait, He’s sparing you unnecessary struggle. Any heartache you may feel right now is because you haven’t put all your hope in the Lord and you are seeking your contentment in temporary things. It’s a vicious cycle: you don’t feel loveable or desirable, so you think that in order to feel that way someone has to want you, to be in a relationship with you…when all the while what your heart is truly crying out for is ‘the One who knitted it together in your mother’s womb.’ - Psalm 139:13. Only He can make you whole. Two whole individuals chasing Jesus and then coming together as husband and wife is a far more powerful light than two halves trying to make a whole and then figuring it out. Trust His timing, let the Holy Spirit work in you.

When that time comes, and it will if He’s given you that promise, knowing what you are entering into is crucial. Marriage is a gift, a beautiful one, and God has a purpose for it here on earth. Marriage is the outward representation of our union with Him as a Believer in Jesus Christ. So when we enter into the sanctity of marriage, we are taking on the responsibility of walking out the outward representation of the mystery of the gospel. That is a big responsibility! So when we try to rush things, when we don’t carefully guard our heart we begin to operate outside of God’s will and God’s design. Remember the puzzle pieces. He will give you the perfect person to compliment all that you are and you will do the same for them. Trust His timing. And while you wait pray for your future husband or wife. Pray for their protection and for their safe journey to find you. Pray for their purity and for their growth in their relationship with Jesus. Pray for their purpose and calling, and the courage and strength to fulfill it. “In the morning, LORD, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait expectantly.” – Psalm 5:3

God doesn’t bless our idleness, we are responsible to be His hands and feet. So during the wait pour into others. We are called in Titus 2:1-8 to mentor the younger generation. Give of yourself to the furthering of the Church. As you give of your gifts and talents, you will be blessed with growth as well.

When we leave everything in God’s hands, we have the peace of knowing that when it arrives it’s exactly right. We are ready and He sees fit for us to step into that next chapter. Be blessed, be diligent, be patient, and trust in His character and His timing.

The new moon falls on fixed star Zuben Elgenubi the southern scale of Libra and its closest aspect is a trine to Neptune.

There is a childlike curiosity to the Moon in Scorpio 2, it is also extremely tender and affectionate. The Moon is in its fall here, however. The energies evoked at this time are lustful and desirous, with much focus on seduction. The Moon here needs sexual relationships and adores the courtship process. Zuben Elgenubi is the main star of the unlucky southern scale of Libra according to Robson “causes malevolence, obstruction, an unforgiving character, violence, disease, lying, crime, disgrace, and danger of poison.” The two scales of Libra used to be the claws of Scorpio, which was a much larger constellation. So they actually fit very well here in tropical Scorpio. Zuben means ‘claw’ and is the prefix for all the stars that fall in the scales. Libra is actually a very small constellation and six of the nine stars here fall in Scorpio decan 2.

So we could say that Scorpio decan 2 might be the true Sidereal Librans. The actual constellation of the scales though has a very different vibe than the Venus-ruled tropical sign of Libra. You can see that Zuben Elgenubi is most definitely Scorpionic as Dr Eric Morse writes: “It is well to remember here the association of this star with a scorpion’s claw, used for making love as well as for slaying its prey. It does not let go until one or other matter is complete and onlookers are not sure which of the two acts are in process. Sometimes even the Scorpion seems to get it wrong along the way!”

It is interesting to see where Scorpio gets its Femme Fatal or Lady Killer reputation. Morse continues that this star “frequently shows up ill-aspected in many unfortunate situations, from domestic strife and miscarriages of justice to psychopathic killings that started out in the guise of love. Its appearance in better aspect is often just the right moment to repair a relationship and to reconsider an earlier harsh judgment.”  The Ebertins say that the unfortunate aspects of the Southern Scale are more marked with nocturnal charts and that it is bad for health with the luminaries. However “A credit given to the Southern and Northern Scales is that they both bestow an immortal name. However, this comes about more by tragic circumstances than by well-noted success.”  The Southern scale was known as the ‘Insufficient Price.’ So here we also experience loss.
