━━ ❝MASTERLIST❞
in this pick-a-card reading, we’ll dive into what people really have to say about you—whether it’s glowing praise or secret whispers. what’s the tea they spill when you’re not around? remember, this is a general reading — take what resonates and leave the rest.
if  you  have  any  ideas  for  tarot  pacs  you'd  like  me  to  do,  feel  free  to  drop  them  in  my  ask  box,  and  i'll  make  it  happen!
choose the picture or pile that calls to you and let the magic unfold!
Tumblr media
PILE ONE i  can  tell  this  pile  feels  personal—what  people  say  about  you  hits  close  to  home.  they  think  you're  indecisive,  struggling  to  take  action  or  follow  through  on  what  you  said  you'd  do.  it  frustrates  them;  they  feel  like  you  can’t  commit  to  certain  things.  some  even  say  you’re  guarded,  mysterious,  hard  to  read.  and  that  only  makes  them  more  curious—what’s  really  beneath  all  of  that?  there’s  also  this  idea  that  you  avoid  confrontation,  preferring  to  stay  neutral.  while  some  see  that  as  wise,  others  view  it  as  passivity,  like  you’re  afraid  to  stand  your  ground.  interestingly,  one  specific  person  seems  to  stand  out  here.  they’re  obsessively  focused  on  you,  constantly  talking  about  you.  they  might  discuss  things  you’ve  been  through—maybe  toxic  relationships,  bad  habits,  or  difficult  patterns.  but  it’s  not  all  criticism.  a  lot  of  people  are  fascinated  by  you.  they  find  you  magnetic,  charming,  even  alluring.  some  are  jealous,  though.  they  notice  your  sensitivity—maybe  they’ve  seen  you  cry  or  assume  you’re  the  type  to  cry  in  public.  they  might  even  think  you  look  younger  than  you  are,  which  makes  them  wonder  about  your  age.  there’s  also  talk  about  your  creativity.  whether  it’s  how  you  dress  or  how  you  express  yourself  artistically,  it  leaves  an  impression.  and  then  there’s  the  assumption  that  you’ve  “got  it  all.”  some  think  you’re  rich  or  incredibly  successful,  even  if  you  don’t  feel  that  way  yourself.  maybe  something  big  happened  recently—an  achievement,  a  win,  or  an  opportunity  that  others  wanted.  it’s  clear  they  see  your  potential,  and  that  potential  is  both  admired  and  envied.  people  question  if  it’s  luck  or  hard  work  that  gets  you  where  you  are.
Tumblr media
PILE TWO people  talk  about  how  cautious  you  are,  how  you  take  your  time  with  everything,  and  how  you  question  every  little  detail.  to  them,  it  might  come  off  as  overly  slow  or  even  boring  because  you’re  not  impulsive.  they  see  you  as  someone  who  hesitates  or  spends  too  long  planning  before  acting,  and  some  might  say  you’re  no  fun  because  of  it.  they  notice  how  you  like  to  have  a  plan  for  everything,  but  they  don’t  realize  that  beneath  that  calm  surface  lies  an  inner  beast—a  strength  they  can’t  begin  to  comprehend.  you  handle  things  with  patience  and  emotional  control,  and  people  see  that.  they  talk  about  how  calm  you  remain,  even  in  serious  or  emotional  situations.  it’s  like  nothing  can  shake  you,  and  that  composure  either  impresses  or  frustrates  them.  some  gossip  that  your  strength  borders  on  stubbornness,  but  let’s  be  real—that  envy  stems  from  wishing  they  had  the  kind  of  self-control  you  do.  there’s  competition  swirling  around  you,  even  if  you  don’t  see  it.  people  notice  how  you  deal  with  disagreements  and  conflicts.  you’re  unbothered,  and  that  drives  them  crazy.  they  might  talk  about  how  you’re  not  afraid  to  speak  up,  even  if  it  causes  tension.  they  focus  on  how  you  defend  yourself,  how  you  never  back  down,  even  in  situations  where  others  think  you  should.  they  see  you  as  determined,  standing  firm  in  your  beliefs  and  decisions,  and  that  resilience  makes  some  people  misunderstand  or  even  resent  you.  it’s  funny,  though—they  think  you  provoke  them  with  how  you  respond  or  even  just  with  your  presence.  your  energy  bothers  them,  but  that’s  their  problem,  not  yours.  you  stand  your  ground,  and  that’s  what  really  sets  you  apart.
Tumblr media
PILE THREE people  gossip  a  lot  about  your  quiet  nature  and  what’s  going  on  in  your  life  behind  the  scenes.  they’re  curious  about  what  you’re  up  to,  especially  since  you  keep  things  so  private.  it’s  like  your  silence  sparks  endless  speculation.  some  even  find  you  suspicious,  questioning  your  motives,  intentions,  or  honesty—accusing  you  of  being  manipulative  or  using  tricks.  there’s  talk  about  you  avoiding  confrontation  or  shying  away  from  taking  responsibility,  and  for  some,  this  feeds  into  the  narrative  of  you  being  a  liar.  there’s  a  sense  that  you’ve  distanced  yourself  from  people,  maybe  even  withdrawn  completely.  this  makes  others  wonder  what  you’re  searching  for—your  purpose  or  direction  in  life.  your  quietness,  while  intriguing,  can  make  you  hard  to  approach.  some  feel  like  they  can’t  fully  connect  with  you,  as  if  you’re  masking  your  true  self  or  staying  intentionally  detached.  on  the  other  side,  there  are  those  who  admire  you.  they  see  you  as  wise  and  insightful,  someone  who  remains  calm  and  composed  even  under  pressure.  your  guarded  nature  and  emotional  detachment  make  you  magnetic  in  a  way  that  draws  people  in,  even  if  they  don’t  fully  understand  you.  they  gossip  about  how  cautious  and  hesitant  you  are  to  take  bold  risks,  calling  you  predictable.  yet,  they  also  acknowledge  your  ability  to  handle  life’s  ups  and  downs  with  grace  and  poise.  whether  people  envy,  misunderstand,  or  admire  you,  it’s  clear  that  your  energy  leaves  a  lasting  impression.

SPOOKY MONTH ASK MEME
⟡ — i haven't seen one on tumblr yet so i figured it might be fun to make one! i tried my best to keep the overall energy positive :3 and sorry for all the "why" questions; i'm just nosey and curious. you're welcome to answer seriously or with silliness !! send a number to the user/reblogger (if they ask for it) for them to answer the question!
1. When did you start watching Spooky Month? Was it the same time you got into the fandom (e.g. interacting with the community, posting art) or was it different?
2. Who is currently your top three (3) favourite characters? Please feel free to explain why!
3. If you have any, share some headcanons of your most favourite character!
4. With any character of your choice, what is a song that you associate with them the most?
5. Is there a ship that you enjoy the most? Why?
6. Who do you think is an underrated character?

13. What is your favourite official Spooky Month art (stuff that is posted outside of the episodes like posters, prints, doodles, etc.)?
14. Do you own any official merch? If not, what is one piece of existing merch that you wish you own? Is there anything that you wish it existed already?
15. From fanart or fanfiction, did someone's work made you think more positively of a character/ship? Free free to shout them out, whether if it's one person or multiple people!
16. Do you have any Spooky Month OCs you'd like to share and ramble about?
17. From the Tender Treats credit art, who would you eat and/or drink? Assume that it’s not the actual character, just regular food that looks like them.
18. Do you have any theories so far on either the lore or (any) character-specific development? It can be your own or someone else's theory.
19. What is your current prediction of Spooky Month’s ending? It can be as simple, brief or detailed as you want.
20. What do you hope will become a Spooky Short in the future (e.g. seeing character-specific lore, character interaction between x and y, etc.)?

hi! not exactly a request but i do wanna ask, whats your process when you're rendering more paint like art? (if that makes sense, English isnt my first language so apologies hdskhsjdbd) i really love how you use the colors and im curious how you do it :0
i’ve been meaning to answer this one for a while so here’s how i painted miku in today’s post (put under the read more because yeah prepare for a long post
i’d also like to preface this by saying that i never follow a set way of doing things, so in terms of what my personal process is like, these are only broad strokes of what i do! sometimes i’ll combine or skip parts entirely, depending on how i feel. also, this is not a tutorial, just how i do things, so please don’t treat it like one :’D this will read like the ‘how to draw an owl’ picture if you do
first, like every artist, i sketch. more specifically, i’m getting an idea of what i want to paint later on. this could be how a scene is set up or in this case, how a character is posed. here i’m not concerned about details or getting everything perfectly, i’m only planning how the thing will be composed. maybe a lot of canvas size changing, or adjusting what miku’s doing (note how busted miku’s right hand looks from all the transforming!) however, i still have to be concerned with how clear the sketch will be to future me, because the sketch won’t be any good if i can’t read what miku’s doing
Tumblr media
after that, i lay down a flat gray under the sketch, mainly focusing on giving miku a clear silhouette. this is also a good time to make adjustments to the composition on the fly if i suddenly feel like something can be improved upon, like shortening miku’s left arm from the sketch!
Tumblr media
after painting a flat silhouette, i start shading in grayscale, focusing only on lighting. i usually do it in two passes, one for the lightest and darkest tones i’ll use (not black and white) and then a second for midtones to blend them better with the base gray but i forgot to screenshot the result of the first pass 🗿 nevertheless, here is where i can start adding some amount of details. i’m not including any extra accessories yet, just focusing on the base design of the outfit and the character herself (for anyone wanting to draw characters from That Gacha Game, this is how i personally make the process more bearable for myself.) i still use the dark gray to separate where certain details (like the facial features and fingers) begin and end, mainly to make colouring more bearable later.
Tumblr media
now here’s where i get the Good Colours. it’s a cheat lol. i put a gradient map layer over the grayscale painting so that there’s a little bit of color to start. some gradient maps can be applied as is, some need the layer settings adjusted to make it look good. this one, for example, is a (free) gradient map set from the csp assets store that needs you to set the layer opacity to 20% and to set the blending mode to color to achieve this result. in general, i tend to pick which gradient map i want to use based on vibes, or basically whether i want the work to be warmer or cooler, colour-wise. but this does do quite a bit of lifting for the colors in my stuff.
Tumblr media
and then, finally, i add the colours. i add flat base colours in an overlay layer. at this stage, i’ve made the character silhouette clear enough that i don’t need to refer to the sketch anymore for what miku looks like. also, the gradient map layer does its magic by making the shading a bit more vibrant than it would’ve been without it. after that i paint over with a new layer to add details like the lace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then i put some extra shading on top. basically this is where the ‘better lighting’ happens. again, this isn’t a tutorial, so i’m not here to say what each part of the lighting is, but i’ve labeled which layers do which job. in other works where the lighting within a scene is more defined (from a window, from a small crack in the walls, etc) the glow dodge layer may be more opaque and sharper, but since this isn’t a work with that, the lighting was applied using an airbrush. the linear burn layer is also there to make the whole thing darker so the glow dodge doesn’t end up oversaturating miku. i also usually match the lights to the vibe i want, and use a complementary color for the shadows. so here you can see i have warm colors on the glow dodge layer, but light purple on both the linear burn and multiply layer.
Tumblr media
and that’s it for the character—here’s a gif showing how each layer adds to miku! (sorry it’s so toasty)
Tumblr media
as for the background, depending on the complexity, it may go through a similar process, or if i can settle with flat image backgrounds, i just go for that. it’s ok to use external image materials. i didn’t have a background in mind for this miku in specific, so i got some default csp materials and threw together something
and that’s about a rough overview of what my process for more finished works looks like! again, art is a fluid process so i never specifically stick to certain steps all the time, and you shouldn’t either. i can probably answer why i’d pick this colour over another in one particular work, but it’s something that kinda has to be learned on a grander scale. i think everyone can already feel what colors work with what atmosphere or what setting, even if they can’t immediately explain why. colors and composition do take some level of experimentation to find what works best!

I adore your style and content - I’m considering doing masters studies of some of your pieces just to try it out, but I’m still fairly new to art. I was curious if there’s any part of your process or any particular advice you’d have?
Gave this answer before to someone who asked me the same question, and I think it still counts! 1) Build stamina. You can do this by drawing often- and with intention. Start your drawing with a warm up- something light, not overly serious. Focus more on the literal mechanical feeling of your hand moving to draw. Then focus on the heavier stuff after you’ve both literally and mentally warmed up, setting the stage for more involved drawing. Make this a routine and drawing overall will be less tiring over time.
2) Focus on replicability, not detail. This goes hand in hand with the previous point. A lot of people develop a kind of perfectionism early on, where they get overly attached to a specific sketch and don’t wanna budge from it, and put details until it “looks good,” even when the subject as a whole is wonky. I like to equate this to “too much icing, not enough cake,” or “building on sand foundations.” I’ve been there before, and it can hold you back. Instead of focusing on a specific piece and how you rendered it that one time, focus on how you render it such that you could do something similar, easily replicate the concept. Once you’ve built more stamina, you can open up the gates to tackling the same subject matter in different ways.
3) Mind your mark making. Some folks agonize over the tiniest detail, sometimes for hours. At the end of the day, that itself doesn’t necessarily bring improvement- that’s more of a test of patience. Unless someone specifically asks, you don’t- for example- need to draw every single ridge of every knob on a switchboard in great detail. These things can be implied through mark making. Remember, a lot of drawing isn’t about literally making something for people to see- it’s tricking the eye into believing what’s drawn is actually there. You’ll be amazed at what detail can be like even when you don’t define every part.
4) Drawing is more seeing than “making it up.” * Don’t be afraid to use references and such. It’ll help you render form than imagining it- sometimes the imagination can conjure things incorrectly. *Even seasoned artists who don’t typically use too much references need to do studies from life or books every now and then to reinforce skills.
One point I didn't add before for style things specifically is: 5) Look where the artist got their inspirations from if you want to learn from them. No art exists within a vaccuum, everyone has their influences. Trying to do a study from someone's art will only take you so far- because then it'll feel more like mimicry than actual, learned study. Research or try to see parallels with artists that you might think had a hand in influencing a given artist's style. Notice the patterns there- certain textures are invoked here, this form was defined like this, etc. A lot of folks confuse wanting "more of a thing" as opposed to "what makes that thing desirable/unique." If you'd like to know where some of my influences come from, I'd say look at the works of Squiddy, covers for Hellboy comics, and the Snowpiercer graphic novel.
Addendum: If you're looking to draw anatomy specifically- study from real anatomy, and learn how to do those before you begin to "break the rules" (exaggerate, anthropomorphize, etc). For resources on that, I'd recommend the Morpho books (all of them haha) and Dynamic Human Anatomy by Roberto Osti.
Hope this helps somewhat, feel free to ask if I missed anything.

Hi, I'm writing Sol x Asuka fanfiction and have a question regarding fire magic, how it would work in the vacuum of space without oxygen, and GG magic in general. So when magic is used, is it just spawning in from the backyard with no regard for what environment on earth (or I guess not on earth in this case- in this universe?) it would be coming into? Or is it based on outside factors as it is being created? Like would water magic be water while you're in a -30 degrees freezer or would it spawn in as ice even if you didn't actively attempt to make it ice? If it has no regard for what space it's spawning into then would it be affected by its environment afterwards? Like fire would be created in a vacuum but then almost instantly go out after it's created. Or water would be created in a freezer but then turn to ice later as it takes time to freeze. I'm assuming the answer to this is yes because fire magic has to be put out somehow on earth, it wouldn't just go on forever I'm guessing. But it's not like we see ice created by magic melt I don't think. 2nd question: What's the range of different types of fire that fire magic can create? I know Sol has Napalm Death but is that actually napalm or does he just think it's call name for a move using "normal" fire magic? Dizzy/Undine has ice which I'm assuming comes from water magic. So would Sol be able to create the types of fires that don't rely on oxygen? Or is it limited to just "traditional" fire. Or could water magic choose to have salt in it (like the water in May's summons?) or be safe drinking water? Ok final question, this is what I really care about and the rest was just because I'm curious about GG magic, would it make sense in space for Sol to repeatedly create fire every "frame" that it would go out to make what appears to be a solid flame that isn't going out? Feel free to just put your own fan theories if none of these questions have concrete answers, I just want to hear what other people think. It's anon because I'm embarrassed about asking such a nerdy question for the sake of fanfiction.
1:
Short answer: I don't think it'd work in a vacuum Longer answer: They haven't really gone into the details of the magic down to that level but also when something has weird rules they usually have someone comment on it and they've never done that so I think it's just normal water or fire or whatever. The Magic article on the wiki has pretty much everything we know about it, so if it's not on there then we probably don't know.
2:
We don't know the specifics of Sol's different kinds of fire, just that some of it is seemingly deadlier than other forms of it. All magic is drawn from the Backyard. It might be that water or fire drawn from it only exists on our plane for as long as the caster can maintain it; ie., it goes back to the Backyard once it dissipates. My only evidence for this is that May isn't flooding the place all of the time, Sol's fire isn't burning forests down, and Dizzy's ice melts really quickly.
3:
He wouldn't be able to summon fire in space at all because there isn't any oxygen around his hand to summon it into, it wouldn't even spark. Maybe he could summon a pocket of air or something to make it work? Also consider how Sol himself would exist in a vacuum, if you haven't already. He can survive the Backyard better than normal humans can, but the Backyard has an atmosphere and crushes people with the sheer weight of data that exists there. Sol isn't immortal, a outer space might kill him. If not from the lack of atmosphere then probably from the extreme cold and general hostile nature of it.
Because the magic in GG is so vague about all this, you can just make shit up and justify it however you want because there's nothing really solid to say what's correct and what isn't anyway. If you need Sol to make fire in outer space just have him do it and either gloss over the fact he's doing it or have him be like "Tch... Gotta chant an oxygen bubble to make this work..." or something lol
Or get crazy into the mechanics. Whatever sounds fun. Your fic, your rules

I only recently found ur tumblr account but i’ve been reading ur fics (I enjoy them a lot!) and honestly it’s making me itch to write. Which i’ve done before but i’ve never committed to a proper fic, so like, any tips maybe? I’ve got Ideas but hell if I know how to execute them
hi hello! happy to hear you're enjoying the fics and aww!! oh gosh. that's so sweet that my writing is making u want to write 🥺
when i started writing hmtb, i had zero expectations, wasn't sure where the story was going to go, had just a vague simple concept i thought would be fun to play with... i haven't written anything in years. i also just got the Itch™️ after reading a good fanfic.
...and then suddely i just found myself writing. (and here we are)
it's a great feeling, and i think you should follow it if u can!! :3
i'm not quite sure what advice you're seeking out here exactly. is there something specific you're struggling with? i'm going to try to list and address some things under the cut, but if whatever you were looking for is missing, feel free to ask about it!
if it's commitment you struggle with, you can always start smaller. you can try to dabble in drabbles, see how the characters and the story setting feel like and get more comfortable with them (and in a way, more curious and inspired about them!).
you can do shorter bits or oneshots—like how i have an au around sleep demon grian, but only have one oneshot fic set in it. it gets you test things out without getting overwhelmed about having to have a Big Story, and then if you decide you want to do more, you can arrange them into a series and link them thematically that way into one cohesive story anyway! (the way i do with boatem circus.)
or you can use prompts to center your works around. which, speaking of, the boatem circus' oneshot was all spawned from a thought "what if panic attacks". bayum.
honestly, i'm not best at organisation and just wing things a lot. but i do recommend you to note down ideas at each opportunity. whether it's just a concept, a dialogue, a snippet, an atmosphere, a scene you might like to play around with at some point, or a whole ass Big Rambly Thought. save it somewhere! save it all!
you can even write down what you need to figure out next. what are the points of the story you need to Think About Some More so that you can move forward? jot down the questions, too, so that you know what to focus on next time you want to brainstorm stuff.
if you're writing a longer thing, i also recommend to note down details you need to keep track of that might otherwise get swallowed up and forgotten as the focus moves elsewhere. (for example, i have a note saying scar was given a feather, and the clothes they're wearing as they're swapped/unusual. i have a note that says that hmtb scar still has flowers from grian's collapse in the field in his inventory—)
but. that all being said. the most important thing is to have fun with what you're doing and to be interested in your own story and the characters in it. i think that's really the key to it. you need to tell the story you want to see. it's gonna be for you, first and foremost, and that's important to be aware of.
which means... be self indulgent!! it's your story! go wild! do what you want!! <333
as for motivation, staying on track, and staying engaged with your story... if you can get someone to ramble at and bounce ideas off of and show writing progress to, that can be a great help! it's even great for fleshing out stories/developing things further/getting new ideas. (a lot of hmtb plotpoints were born in private DMs just because we were throwing "what if" and "imagine this" around!)
at the end of it all... it really just boils down to: start writing.
don't overthink it. open a page, and set the characters free on it.
here's a great thing: it doesn't have to be perfect.
write it anyway.
you can consider it a draft, and then you can read over it and see if you want to edit it in any way. you can have wips around. that's fine! the important part is to start <3
-----------
as a bonus here's some example chaos of my various notes. i have all kinds of things saved, this is kind of just an example of how it can look:

So i've recently found this podcast (and loving it!) and i wanted to ask a few things:
can you make a episode about Scarecrow
have you heard about the Batman fear toxic rumors
what is your currant take on the robins
Welcome listener!! I'm so glad you're enjoying our little project!
I'm so excited about your interest and curiosity, so lets get into it:
1. In the Rogues Gallery Episode we discussed the concept of our beloved and loathed rogues, but didn't get to go into detail to any one specific being. For our first season, we're going to continue on the belief that talking about one rogue might attract the attention of others. Maybe next season! When we can dedicate more time to getting details right. (And to keep the prideful at bay.)
2. Is that the one that theorizes Batman is a collective hallucination? A sort of self-severing specter to keep our own morals in line?
Or am I way off? Please feel free to send in another ask to explain it! I'm always curious to hear what's on the mind of our local listeners.
3. Anon, are you psychic? Have our end of season plans been leaked? Either way, your third question will be answered in Episode 9! (Releasing today!)

My Universe Round-Up
This was a series of 2-part short stories, essentially each the length of a movie but they're more episodic which makes it an interesting format to get a wide variety of actors, directors, stories, and tones. And all of these vary widely. Most of the actors are very green, which means the performance quality falls all along the spectrum, but overall emotions often fall flat. There are a handful of different directors too (each directs a few of the stories), so these really feel different. The only two things that don't vary are the production quality (middling; sometimes some decent camera shots, but few sets and extras, sound is sometimes shirt-muffled or otherwise messed, the usual hilarity of royalty-free music choices) and awkward subtitles.
The subtitles deserve their own paragraph because I think they're potentially the worst kind, in that they look fine but then every once in awhile the translation is the opposite of what it should be. Having a bit of Thai knowledge and experience with Thai pulps really helps navigate these.
The other thing to say about the structure of this series is that there is a neat thing where each story sets up the next with either a character appearing in the next one or having been mentioned in the previous one. So they're all in the same universe but are otherwise unrelated. Sometimes you can guess whose story you'll get next (like a side character), sometimes it's a real stretch (like the waiter at the noodle place the characters ate at once).
As a really brief summary of what these are actually like in terms of narrative, they took as many tropes as they could think of and then treated them seriously. It could have been interesting, if they had something to say, but I'm really not sure they did. There are a lot of difficult circumstances covered, sometimes with hope, sometimes with nihilism, and it often feels like the story is about the characters around those who are dealing with difficult circumstances rather than those who are experiencing it themselves. Honestly this felt like a film school project about trying out difficult tropes, rather than folks with something to say about a specific topic.
Tropes [note, almost all of these are a dark/sad version of these tropes and end sadly or open]: bodyswap, mistaken identity, in-love-with-your-sibling's-friend, destined lovers, enemies-to-lovers, love triangle, coach/athlete, fake-date-turns-real, twincest, age gap, paid companionship, terminal illness.
Warnings for this series overall: murder, attempted sexual assault (in multiple miniseries), incest (only very lightly speculated about), ambiguous relationship with a minor, cheating, intimate personal violence, death of parents, death of a partner
If you're going to try any of them, I'd recommend episodes 5-6, which were the story Right Time, Right You as a starting point--it has some of the better acting, an open ending, but still some of the dark themes (treated not as dark as some of the other segments) so it's a good litmus for if you should try any of the other parts out.
The one I most enjoyed watching was episodes 7-8 You Are My So(ul) Mate which unsurprisingly had actors who have acted before, and was one of the rare happy endings. The last one, I Wish You Love episodes 23-24 was maybe the best done overall (least annoying flashbacks for sure, decent pacing in the romance, comparatively decent acting) but warnings for the ending.
Details of each 2-part miniseries with rating and specific warnings beneath the cut for anyone still curious about any of these stories! My goal here is to give you enough info to watch whichever ones might interest you so I do spoil twists below when I think it's important to help people decide whether to watch. Feel free to ask questions if you're still not sure or have specific things you want to avoid.
Ep 1-2: Casanova Begins
4/10: Not recommended unless you like bodyswap
This plot was doomed to never fly with me; a dead lover tries to seduce the man he left behind in the body of the man he thought his lover was going to cheat on him with. I love supernatural stuff but bodyswap is a hard hill to climb and 2 episodes just isn't enough time to do it well. That being said, the actors did surprisingly well in the scene where all is revealed and they're saying goodbye. There's a stinger, and it did NOT work for me--people are not interchangeable.
Ep 3-4: Marry Go Round
6/10: Decent pulp with a good underlying message, but you have to not mind slapstick
I like the way one side character from the previous series brings us into the next, it's a neat way to tie these otherwise unrelated stories together. For a slapstick comedy of errors, this worked surprisingly well. The misunderstandings are well set up and make sense, characters have motivation for continuing the shenanigans and the continual additional complications build to absurdity but it all holds together in a very slapstick comedy way. Mei being willing to marry her friend's boyfriend to help keep their secret is top tier allyship. I wish the fujoshi had been chewed out more; she was invested in exposing them as a couple for her own curiosity/excitement and that's gross, and I don't like that she got any credit for their happiness. The mom being a secret fujoshi herself [and, it's implied, very ok with their relationship as a result] was a little on the nose lol The performances in this one were a little weak on the comedy; slapstick like this isn't easy to do well and the comedy suffers from this not being these actors' strengths. All that being said, the underlying message that marriage equality is the right thing and having to stay in the closet causes so much strife for everyone is one I can get behind.
Ep 5-6: Right Time, Right You
7/10: Decent plot, acting, themes. A bit rushed, but good pulp. Warnings for references to intimate partner violence. Ambiguous ending.
I enjoyed this one; I love the in-love-with-your-sibling's-friend trope, I love smiling-to-hide-pain, and I love pining. I love the complicated feelings around not being ready to let go of the love you have for someone even if they hurt you. I love wanting to do something for your friend because you see them hurting, and not knowing what will help. I love your sibling and best friend always being able to read you and ferret out your secrets. The framing in this one was interesting, there were a lot of on the nose imagery with the fence, the rope, the cigarettes. I really liked the dynamic between these characters, Mhok really felt like a younger sibling; a little willful, pouting when he is ignored, or not taken seriously, stealing his sister's breakfast, tagging along. And the ending was sweet. It's clear that Phat feels something, though he's been explicit that he's not ready to open up to anyone. And we basically end with very tenuous possibility. Not for anyone who is not ok with ambiguous endings.
Ep 7-8: You Are My So(ul) Mate
6/10: Fun trope-y pulp. Again you have to be ok with slapstick comedy, and I docked this one for internal inconsistencies but the chemistry was on point.
Ahhh one of my favourite romance tropes, dreaming of your destined person before you meet, and then experiencing the dream in reality! I appreciated that Butr's mom really did have a gift, and that he didn't believe and wrestled with the ethics of that. I also really liked that they tried to engineer a coincidence and had one anyway; I'm a sucker for magic/fate is what you make it. The actor playing Butr looks like a Footloose-era Kevin Bacon when he smiles while ducking his head, and the other lead is from My Cuisine, so I was pre-disposed to find them extremely cute. I do love shy4shy. That being said, a lot of the melodrama was around coincidence, and it was clear the overeager senior was just scouring campus for the guy, so there was a double-standard with the "coincidence" that would work (at least in the eyes of the protagonist) so a lot of it doesn't really hold together if you think about it very hard.
Episode 9-10: Lucky Love
5/10: rough especially with the language gap, but the leads have an interesting dynamic
Content warning for an attempted asault in this one. Annoyed-strangers-to-lovers where one guy has just broken up and is drunk and belligerent about it, and the other is not taking his shit. I really like Jeng as this taciturn dude who shows caring through food. The ex is still around, Meen is still clearly not over him, and goes through the stages of learning to prioritize his own feelings and truly let Noll go. Jeng talks mostly in innuendo, which paired with the bad subs (bad enough that sometimes they say the opposite of what's meant) means that a lot of this one is lost in translation. Because of the short runtime and the amount of time Meen spends getting over his ex, they can't get far, but the show gives the sense that they'll just keep on as they've been going. All that being said, Meen wears dangly earrings and has a femme best friend who is fantastic, and I am a simple person who enjoys her simple pleasures, so I actually didn't mind watching this one.
11-12: The Camp Fire
4/10: really disliked the twists in this; the horror was ok. Warnings for blood, ghosts, references to drowning, on-screen death.
Content warning for blood, ghosts, death (more details follow). Horror BL starring Kaonah and Turbo. Two guys who have been chatting online agree to meet in person but it turns out they already know and dislike one another; now they're stuck toughing it out at the campsite rather than let the other chase them home. Turns out this is a classic BL love triangle wherein one of the boys thought they were competing for the same girl, but his "rival" loved him the whole time (this is not the twist, it's fairly obvious). And that was my first frustration; Talay was unwilling to admit any kind of feelings for Camp even though Camp tries to reach out, even though he's clearly been in love the whole time and now has the excuse of their anonymous conversation and meeting. But then we get into the real spoilers, with the double-twist that honestly ruined this for me. First, it's revealed that June the girl who Camp loved is dead, and she died after being rejected by Talay (implying she killed herself) after Talay pretended to be into June so that she would not take up Camp's offer to be together. This made me really not want to root for this couple at all, Talay's character is awful at this point. Then Camp hears this story and decides to admit he likes Talay anyway, which felt extremely rushed if not absurd, and then June haunts them in earnest and snaps Camp's neck on screen. And then in a second twist, we find out we've been watching a film within a film the whole time, and Talay and Camp just met for the first time for filming this and have just started dating in real life. But we spend so little time with the "real" Talay and Camp that I wasn't invested in them at all as a pair.
13-14 Friends Forever
4/10 friendship in this is great but upsetting on the romance front, and the actual execution was rough and full of unnecessary flashbacks; content warning for coach/athlete, unnegotiated kink (slapping during intimacy), dubious consent (for the slap not the intimacy), murder (not shown on screen), and ghosts
So spoiler based on the content warning, this is a story about a coach who seduces one of his athletes and then murders him so that the athlete won't expose their relationship and get him fired. The sexy scene is consensual but the coach introduces pain without any context or consent, and it's just kind of shrugged off. The coach is creepy from jump so I enjoyed none of the couple's scenes. Beyond that, my issues with this were the massive use of flashbacks in a 2-episode short. They basically re-showed ep1 in ep2. The acting is ok, and the friendship (which is the actual story) between the guy who is murdered and his team is extremely cute, it was heartening how much this team supported their teammate dating the coach and how much they missed him and cherished his memory after his death. But this could have been one episode, or they needed something more to do.
15-16 Fake Love
4/10 flat acting and more flashbacks than actual new shots (half of ep 15 is a flashback of the other half of ep 15, and then we get it AGAIN in ep 16).
In this story a university student is trying to show up his pushy ex by blackmailing a campus 'prince' to pretend to date him. He finds out that his fake boyfriend used to have sex with his ex, and gets upset. They make out and then avoid one another. Fake boyfriend gets beat up and they reunite and admit they both lie to protect their reputations. There's an implication that Pol was being judged for being slutty and Peem was being judged for being poor, which I would have liked as a theme if they then hadn't undermined this by framing Pol as being "good now" at the end. Open but tentatively happy ending.
17-18 Pisces of You
3/10 WHY IS THIS SO DARK DANG. TW attempted sexual assault, blackmail, speculation about incest (really mild),
Ok so this is about twins being jealous and confused about their feelings; Mild is here and he sexually assaulted one of them (idk how young these actors are but this was hard to watch though he doesn't get far). I don't mind what they're doing around twins pulling apart, falling for other people and putting them first, being confused about their feelings, throwing away their future for an unrequited love (this is actually super realistic), regretting their decisions. But goddamn that was painful AF and these baby actors really struggled to actually deliver on these difficult and complex emotions.
19-20 1626
6/10 decent short story but barely a romance. Warnings for age gap.
Follows one of the twins' love interests from Pisces of You; we find out why he wasn't interested in the twin, it's because he has his own love interest in his former tutor 8 years older than him (16 and 24). For what could have been a really cringe story, this was handled relatively well. They were careful that these two characters barely touched, and made the feelings between them very ambiguous and confused. The ties between them were very confused too; they both had family trauma and had helped one another to the point where desire and debt seemed to be inextricably mixed up. I appreciated the choices made in this one. Again, not what I would consider a "romance" story per se. And again, the ending is ambiguous.
21-22 Refund Love
2/10 incomprehensible, terrible acting, terrible plot, zero chemistry, infidelity, manipulation, and weird unclear moralizing around a thinly veiled allusion to sex work
This one, I don't even know what to say. It's trying to be clever with the way it parcels out information, but it ends up being just frustrating and, in the end, nonsensical. I won't even try to avoid spoilers or fake impartiality here, because I really think nobody should watch this one. This is all about jealousy of your significant other taking a job as a "companion" for other people. There's lying, manipulation, and attempted fake relationships for jealousy purposes. I'm sad because this also has a side GL couple, but they made no sense. This couple claimed to have orchestrated their boyfriends deciding to spy on them together (how?) in order to....see if they cared enough to fight for them, after one had already broken up with her man and the other was going to? What in the world was the endgame?! MAKE IT MAKE SENSE. Anyway they really shoehorned in a relationship in this one with two guys--one of whom just broke up, the other who is thinking about whether or not to break up, and who spent only one day together, most of which under false pretenses--and I didn't buy a second of it.
23-24 I Wish You Love
5/10 big themes, decently handled to a point, but the story was about how helping the terminally ill character helped the abled character find purpose, and that sat wrong with me. Warnings for discussions of terminal illness and character death (not shown onscreen), as well as loss of parents.
This episode was set up as a ghost in the mirror story, but the supernatural element disappears pretty quickly and is actually just an excuse to bring together the two main characters (who knew each other before but one thought the other was dead) back together. This story is trying to deal with the very serious issue of chronic illness and what it's like being young and unable to do the things other people do, and the suicidal ideation that can come from being isolated and having a limited time left anyway, as well as the regrets about missed opportunities. It was also dealing with the sometimes awkward feeling of sorting out the love of friendship and the love of romance, and transitioning from P'-Nong to Faen, especially with the additional fear of loving someone when one of you has limited time. The supernatural element comes back at the end to grant one wish, and to give the character who is sick a chance to undo one regret. It's implied Marwin died, but we don't really see him process having completed their bucket list, instead we get Pond reflecting on what he'll do next and how this experience has given him meaning. This episode had fewer egregious flashbacks than the other episodes, and better acting (one of the main characters is actually one of the series directors, and the other is Winner aka Wai from My Dear Gangsta Oppa, as well as War of Y and Nitiman), but did also use an instrumental auld lang syne in the background of a dramatic scene that was distracting, and some awkward we-don't-have-budget-for-an-actual-ambulance-or-emergency-personnel moments. Overall it was one of the better offerings from this series but I wasn't thrilled with how it made the terminally ill character's death a teachable moment for the one left behind, even though that was honestly flagged as the point throughout the two episodes, so is maybe my hang-up and a little unfair. At least this series framed that it was about Pond the whole time (we start and end with him).

Hope You Had A Good Day, Saw Asks Was Open So :D
Here's A Question (Sorry If You Already Answered It Or Something Like It) But When You're Going Into Writing A Chapter, Where Do You Usually Start? Do You Start From The Beginning, Work Your Way Backwards, Write Motives/Free Times, Etc? Or Like a Mix?
Anyway Some Tangents, I Played YTTD Because I Was Curious After Reading Dr96. Great Game And Everyone Should Play At Least Once (It's Free So Why Not??) + Gin Is The Best Boi Prove Me Wrong
Also The Pure Acid Trip I Had When I First Saw Saiki's Inclusion Like 0.0, Rest In Dark Peperonis Kaido ;_;
Hope That Everything's Going Well Irl And That You Have A Great 2024!
When I write a chapter, I always start with a plan. This plan will basically just start off with a very rough idea of what key moments will consist in each day up until the murder. Then, I'll move to plan each day out in more detail, such as important dialogue or development on some scenes.
The murder case is usually planned at whatever point I feel necessary. For example, for a case I already had the plan in advance for, I can flesh that out pretty easily. But for times where I haven't, I may do it later.
So, I do mostly work in order from daily -> investigation -> trial. I'm not really sure if I could do any work on a trial without having the previous as everything is supposed to build up in order.
Things such as motives and FTEs however were all done in advance. The motives were planned before the chapters are worked on, and I wrote all the FTEs just after I finished working on the prologue. So each time I needed to add a FTE in a specific slot in a daily life, I'd leave a little note, then copy and paste the needed FTE into it's place.
Also, I heavily agree about your sentiment on YTTD. It's a completely free game, and you can even just play it in your browser!
And thank you very much! 2024 is definitely doing uh, something! 👍

Hi I love your writing and LOVE the recent scarab/orbo fic you posted. I know with "shadow of the luminary" you said that it was cool for people to write sequels for it... I was just curious if that applied to "darkness drives the beetle to the bulb" too? But if so... would writing about the intern that appears in the middle of the fic (and then pairing them with Scarab) be okay? If not, that's totally okay (it is your work after all)!!! Thank you for writing such great fics and posting them!
thank you so much for this lovely message! you're too kind!! 🥰
and thank you for asking!! :D please, feel free! the blanket permission i gave for sequels extends to all my fic, really, but most emphatically to my completed fionna & cake works, including:
come out of your shell (prismo/scarab)
in the shadow of the luminary (nightmo/scarab)
the past is perpetual youth to the heart (wizmo/scarab, midquel to luminary)
when darkness drives the beetle to the bulb (orbo/scarab, sequel to luminary)
in fact, a wonderful sequel to "darkness drives the beetle to the bulb" was just published tonight: Growing Pains and Coffee Stains by mouseyblue! i got a sneak peak before it was published and CAN CONFIRM, it's VERY good!!! <33333333
anyway! as it happens, i spared the details on the intern in "bulb" SPECIFICALLY so people could imagine their OCs or self-inserts there, if they wanted. :3c so i'm delighted to hear that possibility piqued your interest! bonus points for understanding the "assignment", hehehe <3 if you check the "inspired by" box and add a link to my fic, I'll approve the association so they can link to each other <3
honestly, I'm really enjoying doing fic this way lately? that is, not making formal sequels with the AO3 series function, but using the "inspired by" function for my own fic too, so that both my fic and others' can share equal "legitimacy" as follow-up reading experiences from the fic they were inspired by! none of us owns these properties anyway, so why not have fun with it??? i love to construct a beautiful sandbox for everyone to play in together <3
i should get an email notification immediately if a fic is posted that's "inspired" by one of mine (unless it's posted to an anonymous AO3 account, for whatever reason...), but please feel free to let me know you've posted it here, or on any of my other socials, too!
thank you again for your lovely message, and happy writing!

I'm really, really, REALLY curious:
We all know you're the CEO of XemSai and MoonRocks. But! Who do you think Vexen should be shipped with? Why? (If you don't have any ships for him, feel free to delete this ask!)
(warning for a nsfw answer haha)
first of all thank you for putting the xemsai/moonrocks crown on my gay little head hahahaha
But! Vexen! I love the guy, I think he's very fun. I havent written him in much detail yet but he is definitely going to show up more in LFOTR
I primarily pair him with Marluxia tbh! I like their bitchy dynamic and at some point I would really like to write a pheromone/sex pollen fic of those two. Vexen being very cold and calculated and trying to study Mars on a medical table who is there just emitting perfume and looking smug and trying to get that old mans attention. I like the idea of Marly constantly riling Vexen up and getting under his skin and just generally being a smarmy little annoyance until Vexen pins him to a desk and rails him and Marluxia is just like 'oh my god I didn't know he had this amount of energy in him <3' lmaooo
One of the concepts my chat and I discuss a lot is Vexen and Saix together (which may not be a surprise lmao) - I like the idea of twisting this element of a not-quite-fatherly-bond but like. Vexen wanted the best for Saix. Wanted him to grow up and live and be able to have normality but he just sees Saix struggle with responsibility and possession and everything. Saix being so at his wits end and needing some form of care, any form of care, from anyone who is even half genuine - and he goes to Vexen, who has always been there for him to some extent, who Xemnas hates, who has this way of being guiding and nurturing and its comfortable even though it is kind of strange but they somehow just end up going for it - Vexen of course having so much guilt over bedding someone who he almost saw as a kind of son, wondering about what lines he has crossed, if this is yet another wrong thing to add to his list of dubious moral failures - but ultimately he just wants Saix to have a safe place to outlet, and, hey, if the Diviner comes to him to blow of some steam, tucked away from everyone else, then its better than then seeking out a fight or trying to do something reckless, right? heehee. listen I'm a gross little pervert theres a tasty mix of age gap and authority and it just hints at a daddy kink while not actually being anything specifically gross and I think it could be a super fun dynamic for me to write about at length sometime. I plan on doing a fic on it eventually - but as you know my heart says that Saix ends up elsewhere eventually hahaha this is one of those backburner pairings that I don't put a ton of focus on, its just a fun idea that I think has potential.
(I do have a fic planned where, unfortunately, bad things happen to Vexen in order to further the XemSai agenda. I will perhaps not go into it here but. He uh. He definitely features in it in a major way lmao;;;)
and of course I've seen you mention Vexen and Luxord and by God one day I will explore that because as a British blonde little gayboy I need to put Luxord in more situations

❝  i do hope you're not getting too excited now.  ❞ he glances up at her briefly, then looks back down to the page he had been writing on. he was revising a story he had recently written for the brigade not too long ago. it wasn't as well received as he would've liked it to be, and while he'd like to say it didn't matter to him, it was a little disheartening. he had worked hard on the original — creating a murder mystery for your friends to solve live was a difficult thing. don't even get him started on the cat...
he makes a few more strokes, finishing up the solvable portion of the piece. he'd told sayo about it and she had gotten curious... and given her love of mysteries, it wasn't like she needed his detective character to spell everything out for her at the end. not when she had someone right here to feed her theories. as well as confirm them when the time came.
finally, he finishes, bringing the papers together and tapping edge against the table to make the stack nice and even. he looks over his shoulder once more, holding the stack up for sayo to look over.  ❝  for your convenience, there will only be one victim: keiichi-san. it's not a serial murder case of any kind... nor is there more than one suspect. there is one murderer and one alone. i originally made this as a game, so i didn't take the time to come up with a decent motive... this is more an issue of figuring out the trick than anything else.  ❞
a little before two in the afternoon, keiichi, arakawa, yukata, mori, suzumiya, asahina, nagato, tsuruya, koizumi, kyon, his sister, and the cat shaimsen were together in the lounge. keiichi, who had a cat allergy, was escorted to his room by mori a few minutes before two. he states his cat allergy only becomes a pain to deal with in smaller rooms, and isn't so bad in wide, open spaces.
before he leaves keiichi states he'll be taking a nap and asks to be woken up around four-thirty, to which mori agrees and escorts him out. arakawa, the butler, also leaves to deal with yukata's luggage.

❝  i've just rewritten the outline, so i may have missed some of the more specific details. if you have any questions, please feel free to ask for the sake of clarification. i did perform this at an actual location, so i have a good image of the space in my head still.  ❞
from two to three, tsuruya, kyon, his sister, suzumiya, asahina, nagato, yukata, and koizumi stay in the lounge. koizumi leaves after playing a game with the others, returning at slightly past two-thirty with the cat in his arms, who had vanished before the two o'clock mark. koizumi claims the cat was preventing mori from going into the kitchen. the cat curls up near the heater and stays there. no one leaves the room until a little before three.
everyone except for nagato, yutaka, koizumi, kyon, and the cat leaves the room temporarily. it has begun to snow outside. tsuruya, kyon's sister, suzumiya, and asahina return to the room. koizumi passes kyon a folded paper and asks for him to give it to suzumiya for him. at exactly three, the group in the room begins to play games together. no one leaves again until four o'clock.
yutaka leaves to go to his room, claiming he'll go to open his luggage and that he'll return in five minutes. tsuruya and suzumiya go to the kitchen and return a few minutes later with deserts. yutaka returned in five minutes, as promised. shamisen seems to vanish in this time. no one else left the area.
at about four thirty mori comes to inform the group keiichi isn't answering her calls. she attempted to wake him at the hut, but there is no answer and the door is locked from the inside. everyone goes to the hut. keiichi and the key are both in the room — there is no spare key. the group must break down the door to get inside. they discover keiichi has been stabbed in his bed.
the key to the room was left on the desk, implying that the killer didn't leave through the door. the window is closed, but not locked. the thick layer of snow outside is likely to have concealed the escaping killer's footprints. the hut has an overhanging roof on all four corners, a thin layer of snow accumulated beneath them. it seems that the killer must have gone along the field beneath the roof or along the outer wall of the hut. with the rate the snow is falling, the footprints wouldn't have disappeared with less than thirty minutes of snowfall.
another important detail to note is shamisen, who was found moving around in the sheets of the bed. mori and arakawa claim to have been in the kitchen together from three to four-thirty, when mori went to wake keiichi. they did not leave each other's sight.
Tumblr media
❝  to summarize the key points: keiichi-san went into the hut for a nap around two o'clock. the body was discovered around four-thirty. the murdered must've committed the crime within the last two and a half hours. the entrance of the hut is locked from the inside and the key is in the room. there is no spare key, but the window is unlocked, so the killer must've escaped through the window. — it's impossible to head to the main corridor from the hut's window without a trace. having no footprints indicates the original prints have been covered by snow.  ❞ he watches her expression as he explains, just as he had watched her read through the case. he wonders if it's any good... he wonders if she'll like it. honestly, he isn't very confident in his writing. he's no agatha christie.  ❝  lastly, shamisen is present on the scene of the crime along with the victim.  ❞
