獨竹漂 (du2zhu2piao1; single bamboo drifting) is a folk skill in northern Guizhou where performers stand on a ~15 cm wide bamboo pole and hold a thin bamboo pole to use as a paddle. Originating in the Qin and Han dynasties, it was used as a form of transportation for the people living on either side of the Chishui River. Nowadays, it has transformed into a folk sport, with performances taking place during the Dragon Boat Festival and events held in various sports competitions.

OP (杨柳/Yang Liu) has practised the skill for 18 years now, combining traditional practices with modern performances for her shows.

8. What hobbies does your OC have? What do they do to unwind?

Ares doesn't have hobbies because he's a fucking loser. And also because he doesn't really get free time since we share a brain. But he enjoys a majority of my hobbies.

Speak is a designer through and through, and any spare moment is filled with making something. In his original story, Speak is very into performing theatre, and that still holds true! Ares hired him to work on costumes and architecture and by god will Speak work on that. If he isn't working on the games (which he's trying to speed through so he can get back to his home plane of reality), Speak is chilling with Apollo and Majesty, planning technical aspects for his personal projects, or on the phone with his stage manager Liam, who was left in charge with Speak gone.

Majesty has a good amount of free time, since she was hired to work on the more violent aspects of the games, and the team has not reached that point in development yet. Because of that, she's spent most of her time at her home dimension, only coming to ETC's apartment every now and then when the team needs extra hands. So her hobbies are everything she would normally do at home- sit on her throne, plan military operations, and mess with her boytoys Mailman (FUCK THAT GUY) and Puppeteer.

12. Does your OC interact with other people's OC? If so, who's their best OC friend?

Ares likes interacting with other OCs because it feeds his ego. That's about it.

Speak also likes interacting with people to feed his ego, but for different reasons. He is constantly taking notes on people and plotting who would be best to... yeah no sugarcoating actually. Plotting who to next kidnap and indoctrinate. He does genuinely get along with a few folks, and as of right now, favourites Avarice and Crystal out of all the contestants.

Majesty isn't a freak (/silly) and likes interacting with people normally, but she is a bit on the introverted side and doesn't really like forming close bonds with people. But, as you already know, you are her favourite contestant! Congrats!

14. Who's a character your OC cannot stand! It's on sight when they see them!

Speak is a MASSIVE hater. He hates most people but does so quietly so he can continue manipulating them to get what he wants. However, there are exactly two people that Speak will openly hate- His younger sibling, Hear, and a kid by the name of Simon, who lived with Speak's older sibling Shepard for a while. At least he barely sees them.

Majesty is a meticulous person. She doesn't tolerate a lot of people, but she won't go out of her way to cause problems. She's queen, after all. She can't afford to make impulsive moves. However, putting that aside, Majesty's sworn enemy is a gal named Cosmo, who is one of the leaders of the underground rebellion against Majesty. If it weren't for Majesty's reputation, she would fucking maul Cosmo.

And as for Ares... well, no one that would surprise you.

Speak is elated! Unfortunately for you you are not actually friends with him. He does not have friends. The closest you can get to being friends with Speak is being in the Company, which means you are in fact getting manipulated by Speak into thinking he's your friend. Speak is an intentionally closed-off person, as well as lacking a couple of the emotions required to form emotional bonds. If you're close enough to Speak that he doesn't consider you one of the idiots that follow him, you're either his current Stage Manager (which, good fucking luck replacing Liam, they are the GOAT), or you're his older sibling Shepard. And you are neither.

Majesty you could actually befriend, as long as you respect her personal space. She would enjoy tea parties and gossip and watching very graphic horror movies. As long as you can brush aside her occasional meltdowns and tolerate being in the same room as Mailman for more than a minute (which I could not, fuck that guy), she would be pretty chill! Unfortunately, Majesty is not much of a talker, but she's not against being friendly like Speak is.

Abso-fucking-lutely. Zeus is so so so reliable. He would see his phone ringing with your number at ungodly hours of the night and be wide awake immediately, checking to make sure you're okay and helping if he can. As long as he isn't directly going against orders from Ares, Zeus is the most reliable motherfucker and I love him so much for it.

GOD I WISH I WERE FRIENDS WITH HIM. That would be awesome.

I'd say Zeus would be pretty good friends with most OCs! Whenever he's off the clock, he is a great person to be around- fairly lively and very considerate. He's also pretty darn good at communicating, so no need to worry about whether or not he's actually friends with you like some people I could name.

Unfortunately, it's a different story when he's on the clock, but... we can ignore that in favour of kind friendly Zeus moments.

YN was a girl not many people enjoyed talking to. She was a ball of fire, except she wasn’t feisty or argumentative, or crazy. She was bright, but not fiery. So… maybe a ball of rainbows: bright, colorful, talkative and kind. No one enjoyed her company because they knew she would ramble on and on about animals, the ecosystem, the books she did and didn’t read. The only person who enjoyed her presence was Ellie. 

Ellie glared at the people who scanned YN–their eyes ready to burst and attack YN if she even got close to them. She  enjoyed protecting YN, because while the girl only saw the good in people, Ellie saw their true intentions. And most of them were never good. 

That’s why, when YN started seeing a guy Ellie sometimes went on patrol with, she tried pushing YN away. The guy, Jacob, didn’t actually enjoy listening to YN, he only enjoyed looking at her breasts through her low-cut long sleeves and staring at her ass in her tight jeans. She was oblivious, because Jacob said all that she wanted to hear. Not only that, but he would eavesdrop on her and Ellie’s conversations, picking up all the things that she liked so he could somehow find them out on patrol and take them home to her. That was the only kindness Jacob held, because in all other aspects of the guy, he was a complete asshole. 

Ellie hated Jacob, which worsened his title of ‘asshole.’ He was lazy on patrol, and one time he left her to die when they came across a group of runners in an empty building. She hated the guy, more than her heart could carry. But YN adored him. 

Which left her questioning her mind. Had she gone insane? Was it just the effect YN had on her? Of course Ellie liked her, but was she sure that it was in a romantic way? YN and Ellie had been best friends since the first day Ellie entered Jackson. They shared absolutely every secret, memory, joke, etc. In the first few years, Ellie only felt platonic love for YN. But when she turned 17, her vision shifted, her heart shifted, and she began seeing YN as a potential love interest–along with her best friend. 

Ellie was sitting outside of a farmhouse alongside Jacob. Ellie was picking at flowers in the grass and Jacob was digging through his backpack. She was starving, but she had a heavy breakfast before patrol, therefore she thought she could make it through the day. So she sat there, ready for Jacob to eat his lunch so they could leave. 

She had a dandelion between her fingers when she heard Jacob chuckle. She disregarded it at first, but two seconds later, the chuckle turned to quiet laughter. She slowly turned her head and saw that he had a polaroid picture between his fingers. 

Ellie’s eyes creased as she tried to catch a glimpse at the picture, but Jacob quickly noticed and said, “Oh, you wanna take a look?” 

“What is it?” Ellie asked, needing to know before he showed her some sick bullshit. His friends were known for being some kind of satanists that performed witchcraft on animals or something. At least that’s what she heard from some kids. And she believed kids–they had no reason to lie. 

Jacob turned the picture around and her heart quickly sank. She snatched the picture from his hand and turned it around, trying to see if it was some kind of joke–but how could it have been? It was a damn polaroid picture. 

“What the fuck is this?” she asked him, her voice loud and clear incase Jacob’s pea brain didn’t understand. 

“What?” he still asked, causing Ellie to reach over and pull his shirt collar. 

“What the fuck is this picture? Did you make her do this?” she spat. 

“No,” he laughed. “Why the fuck would I force her to take a naked picture of herself?” 

Ellie shoved him away and stood up, her fingers still grasping the picture. Jacob fell back and slammed his head against the fence. He winced but quickly stood up as he saw Ellie grabbing her backpack off the ground, his picture still in her hold. 

He followed after her as she grabbed Shimmer and jumped on. “You can’t take that.” 

“Tell me why she took this and I’ll–” Ellie shut up after her sentence, because no way was she going to return the picture. He didn’t deserve it. He was a worthless piece of shit who didn’t value YN’s rambling, her kindness, her smile, and most certainly not her body. “Just tell me why she took this.” 

“I don’t know why!” he exclaimed. 

“Really?” Ellie asked, almost like she was going to pull her gun out and shoot him if he didn’t answer truthfully. 

Well… she did… She pulled her gun out and aimed it at him. 

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” he yelled. 

“Just tell me why this would be in your backpack and I’ll be on my way.” 

“I don’t know!” he yelled again. “Dude, we’re just talking. She doesn’t want to have sex yet so I said we could build up to it. She could start off with taking naked pictures and–” 

Ellie hopped off Shimmer–gun still pointed at Jacob–and walked over to him. “You’re telling me that instead of starting at making out, you just said, ‘Oh! Take a fucking nude?! Are you stupid?” 

“She didn’t want to make out!” 

Ellie shut her eyes and slammed the side of her gun against Jacob’s face. He fell onto the floor and shouted in pain, spilling out expletives as he cried. 

Ellie hopped back onto Shimmer and rode back to Jackson, where she ran to YN’s house the second she left Shimmer at the stables. She rapped both of her fists against YN’s bright yellow door and didn’t stop until she heard an, “Okay! Okay! Coming.” 

She dropped her hands down and dug into her jacket pocket for the picture. By the time she retrieved it, YN had opened the door with a worried expression on her face. 

“Hey,” she said as she looked Ellie over. When her eyes landed on the picture, she placed her hands on the doorframe and began shaking her head. “I already know you’re going to want to come in and talk about it but I don’t want to talk about it.” 

Ellie ran a hand down her face and sighed. “You don’t have to talk. I’ll do all the talking.” 

YN shook her head. “Stop. I don’t want you to know about it.” 

“Well I already do, YN!” Ellie shouted. “Are you an idiot? Why would you do this? Give that jackass a nude picture of yourself?” 

YN shut her eyes at the loudness of her voice and grabbed Ellie’s arm, pulling her inside and shutting the door. She leaned against the yellow door and covered her face in embarrassment. Her best friend, someone she trusted more than anyone, knew about her nude pictures. She didn’t want anyone to know about them, not even Ellie. Because if she knew, she would cry. She would cry because deep down inside, YN wished it was Ellie she was giving the picture to. Not Jacob. 

“Why are you crying?��� Ellie asked. She was standing in front of YN now, the picture in between her fingers. She wasn’t looking at it, it felt wrong knowing it wasn’t for her. 

“I’m not crying,” YN exclaimed, but she was. She was simply trying to hide her tears. 

“Yes, you are, I can hear it. Why?” 

“Why do you think?” 

Ellie finally looked down at the picture and studied it. She shouldn’t have, but she couldn’t hold back. YN’s body was angelic. Her breasts sat beautifully on her body, her cunt was hidden behind a small bush, and her legs tried their best to cross one another, hiding her cunt just a bit more. “What do you mean, El?” 

“Why did you give the picture to him? He doesn’t deserve you. He’s an asshole that only wants you for your body and nothing else. Don’t you see that?” 

YN shook her head and wiped her tears away. She straightened out her limp body to appear taller and said, “You sound jealous. Just drop it, El.” 

“No. Tell me why it’s him!” 

“Because!” YN shouted. “He was the next best person.” 

“How? Ellie asked, rushing after YN who left her place against the door and was walking to her room. She had no clue why she was chasing after Asshole-Jacob when she could… Well, she could have her. YN could have Ellie, because Ellie had come to a conclusion that she wanted to be YN’s girlfriend. She wanted to care for her like a girlfriend, not only a best friend. “Please tell me, YN, I’m getting desperate here!” 

Ellie walked into YN’s room and shut the door behind her, as if anyone else lived in this house. It belonged to Ellie and YN, no one else. 

YN was crying but had now faced Ellie, knowing she would finally tell her best friend why. “Because I can’t have you. So I went after someone who was close enough to you. I thought that if I went after them, I’d have a chance at attracting you.” 

“So this was why you placed this in his backpack? To get my attention?” 

YN shrugged. “Sorta.” 

“Sorta?” Ellie raised an eyebrow. 

YN was embarrassed. She threw herself onto her bed and placed her hands on her knees. She was leaning over, feeling like she might just throw up. “I don’t know. He wanted to have sex and I wasn’t ready yet, so I said we could do something else.” 

“What’d he say?” Ellie asked, even though Jacob had already told her. 

“He said we could make out.” 

“And?” 

YN scoffed. “He’s an awful kisser.” 

Ellie shifted. “So what happened?” 

“He said I could send him a picture one day before he went off to patrol.” YN ran a hand over her face. “I don’t know why I did it. I don’t even like him. I acted like it was you I was posing for. I thought that if I just acted like he was you, I’d get through it. But it’s not working out.”

some initial thoughts on the pjo premier!!

[SPOILERS AHEAD FOR EP. 1&2]

Overall rating for the premier: 7/10

a lot of the departures from the original text felt unnecessary to me:

GABE — like most people have said, this version of gabe feels... benign. the book does a great job of setting the scene for percy's home when he comes home from Yancy: a bunch of greasy men, farting and burping and insulting each other watching a game, surrounded by trash, on a sofa. gabe demands money for the taxi and insults percy ("i wouldn't act so snooty, brainboy") to his face, before percy goes into his bedroom and sees old magazines, empty beer cans, dirty sneakers, and general misuse of his space due to gabe. this gabe feels harmless? the fact that he has control over tv!sally's phone is an interesting new detail, but this angle is glossed over almost immediately.

the most impactful part of gabe's character is that sally made the sacrificing of withstanding verbal, emotional, financial, AND physical abuse (percy talks about gabe's "guy secret" i.e. punching his lights out if he doesn't pay him, him realizing gabe probably hits sally) to protect percy, but given that tv!sally argues back, does not compromise to appease him, doesn't help the audience understand that relationship right away. in some ways, i feel like movie!gabe was more accurate in this way; he slaps sally's ass showing a blatant disrespect for her, and has a more aggressive relationship with percy, which while maybe more extreme, is more accurate to book!gabe and percy's confusion and indignance at their relationship. as far as current tv!gabe, it doesn't feel like the medusa head is an appropriate, measured response nor does it feel like the only tool at sally's disposal to escape.

GROVER — Grover betraying Percy feels so unneeded? Grover, later on in the episode, says he needed to expel Percy from Yancy to protect him from more monsters finding him... but this foundation hasn't been laid for it to feel real. Not only does Grover not know this information, but it feels disingenuous considering we've never seen any other indications that monsters are actively hunting percy aside from Mrs. Dodds; the books mention a snake slithering into his crib, a cyclops stalking him on a playground, but pjotv omits this entirely... so Grover's warning doesn't add up. The tv show, in my opinion, could've left this play out exactly as it did in the book... which leads me to my next point:

SALLY — Women don't have to be sassy to be strong. That is not who Sally is. Sally is described in the book as someone who Percy has never heard say a mean word to anyone, and while she is motherly, it again diminishes the sacrifice she made to be with Gabe and just feels unrecognizable as a character. I thought the acting was fine, but maybe it's different coming as someone who knows the book intimately. It just feels like Percy encouraging Sally to finally stand up for herself and choose the path best for her for once is less impactful if she's already been standing up for herself against Gabe's character for years, especially while Percy has been away...

PERCY HIMSELF — Don't get me wrong, Walker Scobell is a GREAT choice for Percy. The Kraft Mac'n'Cheese commercial alone is proof of that. But where is that naturally sassy performance in these first two episodes? The only thing hinting at a sarcastic Percy is the throwaway cafeteria joke ("hey kids, wanna talk about the monsters in my head...?"), but this Percy (so far) lacks impertinence. There are so many opportunities in first few chapters alone that TV!Percy could've incorporated— ditching Grover at the bus station, talking back to Gabe ("kick you in your soft spot, make you sing soprano for a week"), talking back to Mr. D, talking back to Clarisse after the bathroom explodes, etc. While Walker has definitely leaned into the confused Percy character, which is very real, I feel like one of the most important aspects of Percy is his sarcasm and pessimistic humor, which is weirdly absent. He gets kicked out of Yancy originally not for pushing Nancy into the pool, but because his failing grades, bickering with teachers, and general misplaced anger. This is important!! This parallels what happened to Luke after he comes back from his quest, it foreshadows why Percy alone can see Luke for who he is (not solely evil or solely misguided), and it is why Luke tries to convert him to the army initially, because they are foils.

MR. D — The Gods have to feel untouchable because that is one of the recurring themes and sources of resentment for Kronos's army throughout the books. Despite Mr. D's proximity to the campers, book!Percy has to toe the line of respect with him because of his sheer power. Mr. D being played as humorous rather than repugnant diminishes this effect, because it's not yet clear to the viewers why Percy has to respect him, or why Percy would want to disrespect him. Jason's characterization feels a bit more awkward, less developed than it could be with his acting chops, and like a regular counselor making an inappropriately-timed joke rather than an asshole the campers must begrudgingly respect. He even treats Grover and Percy much more kindly than the book one ever would, so I'm curious to see how this will play when Tantalus comes into the picture in season two.

This is just some initial thoughts! I thought Annabeth, Clarisse, and Luke were pretty great, and I like the introduction of Chris Rodriguez earlier on in the story, it sets up his importance pretty well. I wish we had gotten to see Percy flourish more in Cabin Eleven so that his loneliness in Cabin 3 is more poignant; same goes for the gaslighting period at Yancy which could've been emphasized more since it really fucked with him. I think the film location for Camp Half-Blood is gorgeous and I'm so excited to see the new locations the group goes to.

first of all. that was a crazy ass season. so much happened and i can barely keep up or remember. so while this probably won't be a coherent or well worded recap, yhat defintely won't go over everything that i just watched for the past six hours, it'll just be my thoughts for now.

personally, i really liked the kamala plot and her struggle in the workplace. it was probably one of my favorite parts of the season. i'm not sure if kamala will be ditching prashant for mr. kulkarni but if she does i wouldn't be shocked. considering how prashant played into the whole workplace problem. also rip steve lol who remembers him. homie got done dirty.

now speaking of devi. there were many things she did this season that were not at all good or rational. however, i do like the fact that they delved more into her grief, and overall she actually seemed to develop over the season which made me happy. there are aspects of her grieving process that kinda felt unanswered, but hey, it is what it is. for what it's worth, im happy with the amount of growth she had over ten episodes. i actually felt like giving devi a hug so many times towards the end. and maitreyi killed it as always.

regarding the new kids! malcolm, well, i honestly kinda have intense apathy towards him as a character. he was cool at the start, a dick at the end—so yeah, i feel like he served his purpose overall. i felt extremely bad for oliver the entire time. and aneesa! she was the coolest addition they could honestly have had to the team. she's fun, charming, and fits in very well. i felt extreme sympathy for her ed and im glad they put a hotline at the end of those episodes. she's a great girl.

i'm very glad they gave paxton more of a well fleshed out personality this season. he seemed much more personable overall. although i felt like his episode at times fell a bit flat or felt too preachy regarding the whole hot people can be smart too concept, it was overall a fantastic episode and gigi hadid was a great choice as narrator. also loved the little switch to ben's pov when andy steps in. that was funny. i also liked the fact that they went into his ethnicity!

regarding his romantic feelings for devi though. i feel like i can't understand? like does he like her? does he not? is he embarassed of her? is he not? i failed to understand where he was most of the time. the mixed signals, like. paxton. i like you, but huh? well, to be fair, the romance in devi's life this season was pretty much a rollercoaster ride anyways so. i do love paxton's obijan though. great guy. we didn't get enough of rebecca though!

out of the two besties, i honestly liked fab's story a lot more. it felt relatable, that whole feeling of not being able to fit in as a new sapphic. and i adore fab and eve. i'm glad they didnt make their relationship too cookie cutter.

eleanor's subplot was alright. again, it was really hard to kinda, if i put this blatantly, give a fuck about malcolm and whatever their relationship was. (loved tyler alveraz's performance though) but i liked her talking with her stepmom sharon. i wish they spent more time on that rather than malcolm but again, they don't have much time to waste.

i loved nalini's subplots. all of them. she was honestly one of my fav characters this season, as well as devi's grandma. we got to delve into the indian culture more too, so that was very cool. her relationship with dr. jackson was also nice for the short time they had with each other. i didn't expect them to breakup, i kinda just expected devi to learn to be okay with her mother moving on, but then again, i also agree that it felt a little fast. i loved the flashbacks with mohan too.

i feel like i wanna save ben and benvi for last because i have too much to say. it was an absolute rollercoaster ride to be a team ben while watching this season. i'm a bit dissapointed that we didn't get any individual plot regarding him, stuff that didn't have to do with girls, but i get why. he got that in s1, and it was paxton's turn to shine.

regarding the whole ben and aneesa thing; honestly, i think they're cute. i love aneesa and i love ben. i just want him to be happy. but it's clear he still has feelings for devi and he doesn't really know what he wants, which sucks for everyone involved. i think that he just assumed that devi liked paxton more than him, that he was her second choice (which honestly, considering the things that transpired, it's not very hard to see why he though that, and he was clearly hurt with her clear choice of paxton over him on multiple occassions) but oh well.

i feel like ben was a catalyst for a lot of the things devi needed to do. like apologize to aneesa, for example. and in that way, they still work well. i loved their banter, whenever we got it. i have hope for them in season 3 (if it happens), considering the way they ended it, but eh. aneesa is also a great girl, so it sucks that this is the direction we're going. but yeah. i am a bit bitter with the dreadf lack of benvi i kinda got this season, but their conversations and the way he helped push her development did make me feel a little better.

as for what team i'm on or whatever, i don't feel like i'm avidly on any team tbh. i'm still lowkey rooting for ben and devi. the reason why i'm not completely getting behind daxton is because i didn't really like what paxton did in episode 10, with the whole not wanting them to be public thing. the entire season felt like he was sending mixed signals. not that i'm saying hes a shitty guy or anything, but yeah. and the reason i'm not completely team ben is because he seems to be teetering between aneesa and devi, so yes, again with the mixed signals. kind of. but the reason i'm still rooting for ben is because i really liked the way they pushed each other, or majorly, he pushed her development, with asking her to apologize, etc. and although him getting together with anessa was not a win for me, a benvi, to relish, i think it helped devi learn to act a little more mature and less territorial.

if i'm being completely honest, i think that devi needed to be single at the end of this season, at least for now. i read the synopsis of episode 10 and was kinda hoping that she'd make that choice, that she'd choose herself, because what she needs isn't a boyfriend. what she needs is just to recover. and i honestly still don't feel like she completely got over her dad's death.

OVERALL THOUGH. this was a much better season than the first one. i feel like they finally got into their groove in terms of acting and comedy. (also trent is the funniest >>>) although i felt like this season was kinda like the first one but on steroids, which at most times was very anxiety inducing to watch, i did like the episodes and i was heavily entertained. go watch it!

Opinion: How could Sonamy progress in IDW?

Today we’re going to discuss a recurring topic on my blog, with a more complete perspective.

Today’s article was inspired by an ask I got a few days ago about my possible perspective on the future of IDW Sonamy. I thought it would be interesting to revisit and expand this topic, because it’s still something of great interest for thousands of fans all around the world, and because SEGA has recently adopted a very peculiar position on the couple and their dynamic. As I detailed on my article SEGA and its most recent Sonamy side – more canon than ever, the dynamic has been going through a shift that can be distinguished into two main parts: 1) the commercial potential of Sonamy as a merchandising and marketing icon; 2) the stability of the interactions in the comics, in the short monthly stories on Sonic Channel, and so on.

That being said, there’s no need to mention that we’re going to focus entirely and nothing more than on this ship. I usually suggest other articles for those who prefer to read on other subjects, but today I will recommend our Discord server [translator’s note: the server is mainly Spanish-speaking], where discussions about ships are limited on their own canal that is separated from other themes: general discussions, music, fangames and mods, fanfics, fanart and even gaming in general. As you know, if you want to bring something else to our community, or just avoid talking about Sonamy, you’re more than welcome to join. Now, back on track.

What’s going on with Sonamy in IDW?

To recap what’s happened in these last months: Sonic and his friends finally got through the nightmare that was the Metal Virus, he and Amy hugged a few times, and since very recently they’ve been involved in a short arc about Chao races in Twinkle Park Zone, with a sinister background. In these last months after the eradication of the virus, there have been much closer and warmer interactions between our two hedgehogs, and I suspect that part of this is what inspired that question in the first place: what’s going on?

As I commented in the article where I proposed that Sonamy is “more canon than ever” (I know that it’s an exaggeration, that was the point), SEGA is treading carefully and the main canon seems to be willing to negotiate a more open representation of the relationship between the two in their different continuities, from best friends to something more. What I did not expect to happen was reading an answer from Evan Stanley (artist and writer that replaces Ian Flynn) about their dynamic, summing it up with “they like each other”.

The redrawing of Sonic’s expression when Amy hugs him in a recent drawing of hers made people wonder if this was yet another example of SEGA’s “censoring” (comparison below), to which Evan answered that it was modified to keep Sonic in character: he’s a guy that does not show much emotional vulnerability or too many negative emotions, and this is why sometimes the artists have to adjust WIPs to keep in line with this official point of view. Evan assured that this is not any kind of confirmation that Sonic does not like Amy, and doubles down by highlighting that in the official material, in the wikis and on Sonic Channel they show that, and I quote: “They like each other, but Sonic just isn’t the kind of guy who is going to make goo-goo eyes at Amy or perform grand acts of romance. If you wanna see that, that’s what fan works are for.”

And Evan’s words are a great way to sum up what’s going on with IDW Sonic right now. When it comes to interactions, they’re working with two characters who deep down “like each other”, but both show it in their own way. Amy is much more proactive when it comes to express her feelings, while Sonic only sometimes shows a glimpse of his feelings, with a smile or a small gesture. But at the end of the day they’re still friends and, depending on the situation, the comic can focus more or less on these details.

Comparison between the first sketch showed by Evan and the final product. The modification of the expression was minimal: Sonic’s slight blush was changed into a smile, maybe being a little overwhelmed by the gesture of affection.

The “progression” of the dynamic in the future

A good part of the answer to this question is based on my idea that right now, when it comes to Sonamy, we reached some kind of comfortable plateau. What am I referring to? To the fact that there have been a lot of varied interactions in these last 3 years of the comic, and they’re everything I could have asked for and then some. When we talk about Sonamy in canon, as Evan said, we don’t tend to hope for great romantic gestures from Sonic, we barely even ask for a look that hints that they understand each other beyond what it seems at first glance, so the fact that the IDW continuity is betting so much on this ship is basically a dream come true. For this reason, I don’t think things will change much in the future.

If I have to make a prediction on Sonamy’s future in IDW, I believe that there are still a lot of possibilities that our known writers (and maybe new writers!) could explore more, to see what makes this dynamic work so well. Actually, about 10 years ago, Ian Flynn wrote that if they could take advantage of the abilities and similarities between the two characters as adventurous spirits and with a strong moral sense, they would be “like poetry in motion”. This largely happens in IDW Sonic if you look carefully, but there are always new stories to tell and opportunities for them to work together and explore a bit more their strong bond, stronger than other friendships that they share. When the next major arc comes (which seems to be getting closer), they could explore aspects of their dynamic that are slightly more experimental, like being separated for extended periods of time and under dangerous situations… as long as they don’t turn it into a painful experience like the Metal Virus arc.

What Ian Flynn wrote about Sonamy, what works and what doesn’t. This was written in 2011, when Archie Sonic was still the major comic continuity, and when, according to Ian, Sonic was still “tied” to Sally Acord, leaving little room to the writers’ opinions.

The reality is that I see a stable future for the dynamic in the IDW universe. Sonamy is not fit for a lot of drama (fights, breaking up, etc.) without feeling forced or completely out of place, and only fanfics and fanart could be capable of capitalizing on this kind of content. On the other hand, for reasons I detailed in past articles, SEGA would not dare to alter the established order of the dynamic, let alone new that they managed to recover and maintain control over the ways Sonamy is being portrayed everywhere. SEGA won’t pull a Dragon Prince, which ended up confirming the main ship and then they made them go through a crisis and break up in a heartwrenching way in the graphic novel that acts as a bridge between season 3 and 4.

In short

The future of IDW Sonamy is looking bright and stable. I don’t think there will be serious changes to what we’re experiencing right now, and this is why both Evan Stanley and Ian Flynn agree that the dynamic is practically in the perfect place, keeping in line to how SEGA wants them to be represented together. This means we won’t see more affectionate gestures than what we’re seeing now (I doubt we’ll ever see again Sonic offering Amy a rose like in Sonic X), but it also means that we have now a solid basis for our expectations. In the now old IDW Sonic #2, Sonic and Amy had the chance of seriously talking a bit about what they thought of each other, with Sonic being determined to keep living life his own way (although he wouldn’t mind Amy to accompany him… or even suggesting himself that she could come), and Amy being determined to respect his way of life, because that’s what she loves about him, and she doesn’t want him to change. Since then, all we have seen and we’ll keep seeing in the comic is a consequence of this key moment; the two philosophies that they have and they share, in a constant back-and-forth with some tense moments and some cute moments.

An interesting detail that wasn’t included in the ask and that makes me think is the possibility that all of this will feature in the games as well. This is a completely different matter for another day, but I like to think that there is the possibility that we’ll see SEGA being more interested in inserting more Sonamy in the games, even if in an indirect way like in Sonic Unleashed and its emotional support, especially if the rumors that we’re about to get a soft-reboot are true. Romance is not something Sonic games are famous for doing well… at all, but that doesn’t mean it would be a bad idea to add a little sprinkle of IDW Sonamy in the mix.

Robot Chicken #21: “Suck It” | April 2, 2006 – 11:30PM | S02E01

Uuuuugh I thought that after watching Minoriteam that I'd have a newfound appreciation for Robot Chicken. No such luck, this show still makes me scowl performatively, even though I'm sitting in my bedroom by myself. It is a nasty show.

We start out with a “previously on” that continues the story of the last sketch of season one where Robot Chicken gets canceled. Keith Crawford reprises his role as, well, Keith Crawford. Mike Lazzo shows up with a jury of Adult Swim peers (Peter Griffin, Space Ghost, and Master Shake, all voiced by their actual guys). But then some kind of Superman 2 vortex happens and Seth goes back in time to the moment he offends Keith and is granted a reprieve. So we get more of this dreck. Great.

I guess now I talk about the more notable sketches. The first is one about post 9/11 paranoia about terrorists. It's not particularly insightful, but it's a fair distillation of what that time was like. The idea that anything other than a completely right-wing response was the only reasonable response, and that rejecting jingoistic patriotism is a path to being blown up by our brown enemies, etc etc. It's a little dorm-room mind-blower stuff, but whatever man, a lot of post 9/11 satire has fared worse. I guess I respect this sketch even though I didn't laugh.

There's a sketch I don't actually want to talk about, it's called “The Six Million Peso Man”, use your imagination. There's a sketch about a zombie skater who is mean to skateboarders? I don't know man, I liked the imagery of teens skateboarding in a cemetery but I bristle when a comedy character is named (something) McGee. You need to save “McGee” for a sexist nickname for a girl whose body parts you are fetishizing. Titty McGee, Assy McGee—WHOOPS. NEVERMIND

The last sketch is Mr. and Mrs. Brady, like that movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a movie that seemed to capture a lot of people's imaginations back in this day. Too many parodies!!! I’ve already remarked on the irony selections of the 5AM timeslot by Adult Swim with shows like this, and I basically was able to match them all up with sorta relevant shows when I do EPHEMERA CORNER entries. They actually originated from the Something Awful forums and were originally about Vin Diesel in response to his movie The Pacifier. They were adapted into being about Chuck Norris. Conan O’Brien’s running bits about Walker: Texas Ranger also played a part in the viral popularity of the Chuck Norris facts. I remember when they first blew up outside of Something Awful.

I honestly thought they were good, well-written, funny jokes but I usually resist trends, so I usually focused my scorn on more shallow aspects of them like creating a bandwagon around Chuck Norris. There were a few moments where people would bring them up at parties and quote them heavily and boy, did I not like that. I likened it to quoting Monty Python or something. The worst iteration came from a special edition DVD of the movie Road House, where Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier were inexplicably given a commentary track where, when there was a lull, they’d read Chuck Norris facts and make them be about Dalton, regardless if it made sense or not.

SO FUN BACKSTORY BEFORE I GET TO THE PLOT PARTS TJXJJS: my sunday school has a tradition of um holding productions of christmas musicals every december. My teachers would find american christian christmas kiddy musicals productions on youtube and then basically um translate all the dialogue to Filipino (the songs stay in English) and have us um reenact the whole thing and ngl it was a lot of fun! I even acted as some of the main roles there when I was like 10-13 so um I can kinda say that I have some experience with musical theatre YAYYY (jk jk that doesn't really count djsff).

When I was around 12-13 years old, I became obsessed with A Very Potter Musical and wondered what it would be like to make AVPM but Christmas so that my church could perform it (very silly idea but shh i was 12 and I was obsessed) and then over time a plot that Was Definitely Not Harry Potter started to form and them um here we are fjsjd so thank you Starkid for making me go down this hellhole

SO BASICALLY Misfits is about 5 "narrators" - these guys serve as the "floor directors" of the show and um yea they make sure that the plot actuall happens and everything goes exactly according to the script given by the church higher ups or "producers" - who have to bring 3 teens branded by their church as "Misfits" back to Bethlehem 1 CE in order to "teach them a lesson about God" aka convert them to Christianity thus removing the "Misfits" branding. (Also they can only go back once they successfully arrive at the manger because um that's how the producers want it to be tjxjs)

I have to emphasize that although this tackles a lot of stuff related to Christianity and religion as a whole, this really isn't a Christian Musical and that this very morally questionable mission (through the power of Stage Magic and Super Powers, the Narrators essentially bring the Misfits back to the past against their will for the sake of completing their mission) goes horribly, horribly wrong very very quickly.

Throughout the course of the musical, the 5 Narrators struggle to stick to the given script and get their mission done as the 3 Misfits prove to not only be very freaking stubborn but also quite insightful as well as they bring up really good points in regards to religious hypocrisies and socially questionable, prejudiced and backward views commonly held by most religious institutions here i.e gender roles, homophobia, the demonization of science and technology at times, elitism and classism, etc etc (i can only speak in behalf of the Philippines so um yea Philippines). Overall, this is kinda a case study on as to how religion can influence and shape people's mindsets for either the better or the worse and how it is often used by the authorities to simultaneously give hope to the people (especially those of the poorer sectors wherein because of how hopeless the present seems here because a very flawed system kept in place by the exploitative privilged here, they choose to just trust in God instead and also hope that the afterlife is much much better than this shit) while also keeping them in line and like preventing them from rioting. (Church and politics undeniably go hand in hand here even though we have legislations enforcing the separation of the church and state and um yEA THIS WHOLE THING HAS BEEN VERY PROMINENT THROUGHOUT PHILIPPINE HISTORY AND WE CAN ALL THANK THE SPANIARDS but um anyways that'll be a rant for another day)

On a more personal and emotional aspect, this thingy also tackles a lot of stuff I find rather common among kids my age, especially those who had a very Christian upbringing (aka 99.9% of the philippine population tjxbdbf). There's a lot of questioning involved in regards to one's faith, sexuality, perspective and purpose in life and all that fun stuff and how oftentimes said questioning is discouraged due to the church (and ph society overall) wanting us to just like um sTICK TO THE STATUS QUOoOoO and just comply with what is seen as appropriate and godly cause anything out of the ordinary is ngl treated like it's heresy. (YES THERE WILL BE A LOT OF SELF PROJECTION HERE)

One final and important thing to note is that the show is essentially a musical-inside-a-musical in a way fjsjf I originally designed this thing to be like um produce-able on my church's stage (because they were supposed to help me produce the first version of misfits which um yea that's def not gonna happen now tjxjdv) which um kinda looks like the OG Spring Awakening Stage (and yes Misfits is very much inspired by Spring Awakening God I love that show) which is why the show is kinda stylized like a concert with handheld mics and all wherein um the 5 narrators are aware that they are putting on a show to the point of even directly addressing the audience a lot while the 3 Misfits (except for 1 which i'll get to in a bit) aren't aware that they are in a show. The three do eventually find that out and that's when all hell breaks loose to the point that the "producers" (represented by Hades-ish voices) have to intervene by literally changing and manipulating the show's setting and plot to make sure that their script gets followed and that's when the characters really try to break the show to get out of it bUT THE POINT I WANNA MAKE HERE IS THXJD keeping in mind that I had initially planned for Misfits to be produced by my church prior to the many drastic changes, the show the narrators were putting on (aka the musical-inside-the-musical) was made with the intention to pander to a Very Religious Audience. Successfully convincing people to convert to Christianity, especially those of the youth, is what many religious audiences want to see and that is exactly what the "producers" have written for the 5 "narrators and floor directors" to enact. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a Christian and preaching the Gospel and bringing in new believers isn't essentially a bad thing; if they want to believe in the religion then woo good for them! But, such preaching becomes detrimental when you take away one's agency and basically force them into Christianity by means of guilt tripping and manipulation which is sadly very much a reality here (again, a rant for another day) and a representation of such is shown here in the show where um the 3 Misfits were basically forced into this show that 5 Narrators are putting on and, through the influence of the 5 Narrators, the 3 Misfits have to decide to become "good Christian youths" for the show to conclude because that's show the "producers" have written. So when the 3 Misfits stubborness goes to the point that even the 5 Narrators start questioning the morals of their mission, that's when the show starts to go off-script and that's when the production starts to like umm "break" and whenever that happens, the "producers" start speaking to the Narrators, reminding them that they have an audience that they need to please and a message that they need to convey.

So while the Misfits (2 of them, at least, cause um the third one has um yea i'll get to him in a bit) mainly focus on figuring out what in the everliving fuck is going on (while also dealing with their um unfortunate circumstances, childhood trauma, a shit ton of guilt and the concept of salvation and self-forgiveness), the Narrators are tasked with the burden of carrying the show and making sure that the audience finds it appealing while trying to convince themselves that what the church wants them to do is "right" and what the Misfits keep telling them is "wrong" ala um Holier-Than-Thou mindset. Once they eventually start becoming more willing to see the true nature of both the Misfits and the Producers despite the fear of disappointing everyone who's watching, that's when the Narrators and Misfits all start breaking the show by going off-script and completely destroying the plot and production that the Producers have made for the audience - thus making a statement of refusing to comply with a flawed system for the sake of audience approval while also making the first step to fixing that system for the good of all.

Also fun fact: Although it'll make my job a lot harder because I am more fluent in English than in Filipino, i wanna write the thingy in both English and Filipino fjxjdf the dialogue can be Taglish but um the songs that are "part of the script" aka what the Producers want the characters to sing are in English while the songs that aren't part of the script are in Filipino; songs that are both in Filipino and in English are um i guess indicative of the struggle to follow the script while also trying to do what you believe is right (an example of a song with that style is Interpretasyon - which means Interpretation and um Ezekiel (one of the Misfits) sings in Filipino while Joshua (leader of the narrators) sings in English and um just imagine Wallflower cuz IT IS VERY MUCH LIKE WALLFLOWER GJDJNF) and um yea i kinda imagine it to be some sort of rock-pop musical concert thingy so um woo thank you pma for once again influencing my work

SO ANYWAYS UM THAT WAS LONG SO LET'S GO TO THE GAY SHIT

Okay so far 4/8 of the characters here have queerness directly related to their individual plotlines here but um yea honestly i'm tempted to make all of them queer CAUSE IT'S FUN oki so um anyways on to the character dynamics (I won't be able to include more in depth descriptions because im hungry and GOD THIS IS LONG so um yea)

June & Anna (Narrator 2) - oki so June here is one of the Misfits and she's from the poorer sectors (i'm still working on her backstory to make it more believable but um yea) and she isn't able to go to school due to having to prioritize providing for her family first. Due to a very unfortunate childhood event (one that involves Zack, another Misfit), she had to grow up fast and now appears to have a rather jaded view of the world. Anna, one of the Narrators, is the very opposite of that - she's privileged and wealthy-as-fuck and seems to be very optimisitc and friendly. However, ever since she has been blackmailed by her own churchmates for merely questioning her sexuality (true story), she became a more reserved and emotionally closed person despite her very friendly and cheerful demeanor. So when she finds out that June's music carries a lot of beautiful insight and hope in spite of her unfortunate circumstances (the two girls bond over music btw that's how Anna got June to trust in her), she becomes confused because how can June, a girl who has nothing, not even faith, still have hope that she'll be able to find some semblance of happiness while Anna, who has everything, has such a downtrodded view of the world? So um basically their dynamic will also consist of Anna checking her privilege, June explaining how good people turn against the world when the world turns against them (YES A LOT OF TALK ABOUT POVERTY AND HOW THAT IS A RESULT OF CAPITALISTIC EXPLOITATION) (yes June will talk about that a lot), and um what it means to hope with or without faith and what it means to trust another and oneself again. Oh and also lots of philosophy talk and emotional expression through music wie

Zack and Mikael (Narrator 3) - Zack, another Misfit, is a childhood friend of June and a younger stepbrother of Ezekiel (the third Misfit). After Zack and June lost contact after the 'unfortunate childhood event' (i am not sure on what exactly it'll be but in the earlier drafts a fire burned both of their homes and killed both of their dads and rn I have a song concept describing that called "Umaapoy" which means "Burns" but i dunno i'm still working on it), he became best friends with Mikael and um yea said best-friendship was Definitely Not Platonic. After a picture of them kissing was sent to not only the school principal but to basically everyone in the school, both of their parents were called to the principal's office which led to both of the boys moving to different schools to um mitigate the damage i guess gjdjd while Zack's mom eventually learned to accept her son's sexuality, Mikael um wasn't so lucky - I'd say he went through um a lot of religious intervention almost akin to conversion therapy which then um yea has caused him a lot of internalized homophobia and um yea Mikael and Zack haven't been able to talk or even chat in about 3-4 years so imagine Mikael's surprise when he found out that his mission involved Zack - who does not and cannot recognize Mikael because welp not part of the script. Zack, a bit braver now, takes a liking to Mikael and wants to at least be friends with him partly because he somehow finds him really familiar while um Mikael tries to maintain a strictly professional demeanor out of fear that Zack will recognize him and out of fear that he'll fall in love with Zack again. Their dynamic will also include um learning to trust one another and oneself again (like June & Anna's dynamic), to learn how to be brave and be sure in one's beliefs (Mikael um doesn't really speak up that much out of fear while Zack is not only outspoken, but is also an activist - this is another one of the many reasons why Zack is branded as a "Misfit" aside from the fact that he's gay and um yea Ezekiel spends almost 2 minutes berating Joshua for this out of pure anger and disgust), and what it means to reconnect with the past and to forgive oneself (although that is much more expounded upon with June & Zack's dynamic).

Ezekiel and Joshua (Narrator 1) - SAY HI TO THE RILEY AND CAIRO DYNAMIC WOOOOOOO but yea ari dude your analysis on Riley and Cairo (and Kate) being the Main MAIN characters and everything about cheerwives gave me a lot of think about and SO I PUT IT IN HERE WOOOOOO so basically um Ezekiel is the older stepbrother of Zack and the first of the 3 Misfits to figure out that they are in a show. He figures this out because he recognizes Joshua aka the leader of the Narrators aka his former churchmate and ex-bestfriend. He also realizes that they are in a show because he recognizes their tricks which he knew about because he had participated in these missions before as one of the Narrators (Joshua and Ezekiel are older than the rest of the cast and the other narrators don't know that Ezekiel was once a Narrator as well). Due to an Unfortunate Incident (that i'm still working on) 3 years prior to the events in the show, Ezekiel cut off all ties to the church but he is still viewed as this "perfect role model golden boy" which is why the 4 Narrators were shocked to find out that Ezekiel was part of their mission. Joshua, knowing that the real reason to his sudden involvement is due to "producers" somehow finding out their secret about the Unfortunate Incident, lied and told the others that he was just included to make converting his brother a lot easier, which they believed. Out of all the narrators, Joshua is the one who tries his best to stick to the script the most because he knows that if he doesn't, the true nature of that Unfortunate Incident will not only be revealed to his companions but to everyone else watching. Meanwhile Ezekiel, who doesn't know that him being involved in this mission is some sort of um penance for his involvement in that Unfortunate Incident, tries his hardest to sabotage he show by being the most outspoken when pointing out a lot of hypocrisies within religious institutions and in ph society in general (he refuses to tell the other two that they are in a show though because if that happens, he knows the Narrators, Joshua especially will um get very heavily scolded by the producers and despite everything, he still cares for Joshua a lot). I'd say that these two are the ones that push the plot the most - one wants to push the show accordingly to plan in order to please the audience and the producers and in order to not let his and Ezekiel's secret go out while the other wants to push the show off-script in retaliation against the producers (and yes the Unfortunate Incident involved the time travelling thingy which is why he really wants to sabotage this). In fact, these two have 2 duets that are basically them trying to convince the other to go along with their plan ("Interpretasyon" which means Interpretation and "Sikreto" which means secret). This dynamic involves um yea trying to convince the other to switch sides gjxjd and um reconciliation, responsibility out of guilt, and what it means to forgive oneself (forgiveness is a common theme here) and to start to heal from trauma and to not deny the existence of said trauma any longer.

NOW ORIGINALLY I REALLY DID NOT INTEND THE JOSHUA AND EZEKIEL DYNAMIC TO BE GAY BUUTT WHEN I WAS THINKING OF THE LYRICS, I REALIZED THAT OUT OF CONTEXT, IT SOUNDED VERY GAY SO UM HERE'S AN EXCERPT OF SIKRETO (still not finished writing the thingy)
