It's always been honest self-loathing in the published ASOS Arya XIII. As well as in Sandor's dialogue throughout the published ASOS, in Arya VI and elsewhere. (Meta posts on the subject: 1, 2, 3.) I'm glad the draft is letting others see it better, though.
Thinkin' about this Sandor tidbit from an earlier draft of ASOS. Found by redditor u/gsteff at the Cushing Library.

#if you don't get that sandor deeply loathes himself and feels that he's a “gutless coward” then you're missing a huge part of his character#god knows so many are. sigh#i think the final version is better because it doesn't come out all at once after the fight when he's in such pain#but builds up - revealed slowly - until sandor finally loses it completely when he's dying by the trident#evidently grrm feels that way too because y'know that's how he did it in his final manuscript he sent to be published as asos!#i'd hope that these glimpses at grrm's writing process would show people what a careful job writing is to pace the reader's evoked emotions#to see what he discarded as not working or moved elsewhere etc#but alas people seem to be treating it in the same way they do the damn proposal letter#“the real story!” “secrets revealed!” “the original idea!” no you fools they were edited/discarded for reasons#the canon exists as it does because it's the version grrm wanted to publish for you to read. what we *have* read for almost 25 years. istg#asoiaf#asoiaf meta#sandor clegane#sandor meta#valyrianscrolls#a storm of swords#cushing library grrm collection#cushing library asos draft#oh fandom#queue and me we're in this together now
