i am talking about everything i have done for the au btw, because i’ve done quite a handful of things and honestly i really love all of them--even the doodle ones which rarely happens. anyway, i love this au in general. i think the tale is perfect for them, and i’m happy with the works that i managed to put out most esp this one that’s based on canova’s sculpture of eros and psyche. translating sculpture into digital art was interesting since it was all about converting the weight and structure of the sculpture into the screen and i think i managed to do it imo! i love how brienne looks heavy in his arms, i love how strong jaime looks holding her up and i especially love the way i shaded her dress to mimic the lines that the statue has. all in all, this au slapped and i actually want to do more of it but i have no inspiration right now. 

2. jb as classical art series. 

honestly i never thought that this was going to be a series lol i thought it was just a two time thing, but then i did another one, and then another one, and then another one and now here we are. i love all the pieces that i’ve done for it actually. my favourite thing is that they’re all not direct translations of the original art. there are some aspects that i’ve taken and adapted while also putting my own flair into it. i love the reverse colour scheme with klimt’s kiss and my own rendition of it. the gold being the accent highlight in a field of murky brown/black whereas klimt has the black squares present to emphasis the richness of the gold and yellows. i also like the little thing i did where i put the geometric shapes outside of the subject instead of inside (what he did). i put on the tags that i didnt like how it turned out but i actually like it lol i just didn’t like how long it took me i get too impatient with my art i think. anyway. i love this whole series sm i think all the pieces have their own character, and tbh i always get nervous adding another piece into this just because all the ones that i’ve done has been so well received i don’t want to be a disappointment lool. regardless, i love classical art and i love jb and i love being able to put the two together hehe we love to be self indulgent

aka THIS commission that was based from SD’s fic, la belle fleur sauvage. some behind the scenes with that one--that one took me SO long to do, like it was taking longer than i had wanted and i felt very bad and i am forever thankful for sd’s patience 😭😭😭. i really can’t be too mad though since i was working on the third year of my degree, but i still would’ve wanted to finish it sooner than i did. but as for the art itself---i actually love it lol. i always say to zoom in on my stuff to see all the details but i WISH folks would zoom in on that because it’s so big and so intricate. i love how everything turned out; i love how rich the colours are, i love the composition for all three panels, i love how the SKY looked like actually that’s the first time i sat down and painted clouds with that technique and i am so happy and pleased with how it looked im using it for everything LOL, i love jaime’s outfit in the 2nd panel---i actually designed a whole outfit for that and he DOES have his pouches and daggers, etc. stuff that he would have with him if he was a mercenary, but because of the cropping, those details were taken out but it’s THERE. i love the colours and the shading on the 3rd panel. it looks so soft and romantic and it’s everything 😭😭. honestly i didnt know if i was able to finish whole three panels just because of how big the project seemed, but tbqh this piece really pushed me as an artist and im really happy that i had the chance to work on it (-’: 

4. early morning.

this one is a more recent piece and i was thinking post canon jaime/brienne married and either living in casterly rock or evenfall hall. originally the sheets were gonna be red with the gold brocade but i just made it green to make their location more ambiguous. they’re in a castle because of the finery, but which castle i have no idea. anyway i love their faces here in particular--jaime because it’s not often that i draw him old (this is the second time i drew old jaime i think?) and i love how he turned out here. i love how he looks like a silver fox and a dilf and we really do love that for brienne. full disclosure, i have no idea how to draw older folks since i don’t have a lot of practice in that area so im glad my lack of experience doesn’t show lmao. i also love how soft brienne looks here! the little smile on her lips is very sweet, her body language and how relax she seems is very telling abt her confidence in this scene also i think i drew her hands hella well haha. all in all i think it’s a really sweet art! and the full version is not so bad either jaime’s ass was referenced from marble sculptures so you know im aiming for Quality. but i love this headcanon of a younger brienne tiring jaime out, i’ve read a handful fics about it and im happy i can do my own version of it hehe

wow we love domesticity. someone said that if you compile all my ns*w art of them together it’s like they haven’t left their bed ever since they got together and you know what? love that for them it’s what they deserve. anyway i chose this one because of how sensual and simple it is. their body language really does all the talking ; jaime’s hand pulling on the ties on her shift, her hand on his hair, how soft and lazy their kiss looks--it’s enough to tell the story me thinks! i just love how simple this whole thing is but it’s very effective. there’s really not much to it besides what you see but that’s really enough.

MANILA – Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA) Director-General Jeremiah Belgica said while the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) have submitted their updated citizen’s charter, both agencies have failed to post them at the most conspicuous place as mandated by Republic Act 11032 or Ease of Doing Business (EODB) law.

Belgica made this reaction after a surprise inspection at the LTFRB and BAI on Tuesday to monitor the agencies’ compliance with the provisions of RA 11032 and President Rodrigo Duterte’s mandate to solve long queues and backlogs in all government agencies.

He said posting the updated citizen’s charter is part of agency compliance which may also be done by using a bulletin type television that can be seen immediately by the transacting public. This is in addition to the ARTA Desk or the Public Assistance and Complaints Desk that is also required by law for all agencies.

Despite this, the ARTA czar recognized the LTFRB’s improvement in the processing of applications since 2019 and commended the agency’s use of online hearings in processing submissions.

The limits of violence: why Toffee won’t be defeated through force alone.

In this analysis, I'll talk about the fight against Toffee in "Starcrushed," compare it to "Storm the Castle" and "Into the Wand," and discuss the implications of this comparison. This will be the first of two analyses I have planned for the season two finale. The second analysis will discuss the finale's contrast between Moon and Star and include a breakdown of the narrative structure of both episodes. (The number of analyses may change based on whether or not I notice anything new between now and then.)

Since "Starcrushed" is still fresh in all our minds, let's first go all the way back to the season one finale, "Storm the Castle."

Re-watching "Storm the Castle"

Star rushes into Ludo's castle to rescue Marco, who is kidnapped by Toffee. Do you recall how Star handles the fight against Toffee?:

Star: Marco! Here's the plan: we're going in on the count of one. Buff Frog: That is not good plan. [Star racks her wand like a shotgun.] Star: One. Buff Frog: No, wait, stop.

Nearly everything in this scene is suggestive of modern weaponry -- of a SWAT raid, in fact: Star rushes into the room, filling it with smoke like a smoke bomb, and immediately blasts Toffee's arm off. Star tries to break open the crystal prison with a spell resembling timed explosive devices and again with a spell resembling a rocket-propelled grenade. Both of these fail. Even the chainsaw gag reinforces the idea of modern weapons. The modern weaponry is, I think, reflective of Star's youthful impetuousness, but keep it in mind.

Finally, Star dips down and breaks open the crystal prison -- only for it to grow back nearly instantly. Then, only moments afterwards, we see Toffee's arm grow back as well. I think this episode is making a comparison between the crystal prison and Toffee himself: Marco tries to attack Toffee but only ends up punching the crystal, both the crystal and Toffee are a similar shade of green, and both grow back after being destroyed. In fact, Toffee says:

That won't work again. That crystal's twice as strong now.

It's not hard to imagine that Toffee might well be talking about himself: a trick used on him once won't work again; he'll be ready the second time. Try to destroy Toffee as much as you like, but he always grows back.

Indeed, though at first it seems the wand's explosion completely destroys Toffee, we later discover he is still very much alive, and this was all simply part of his plan. This is the first time we see on-screen that violence fails against Toffee.

"Into the Wand" and History

With "Into the Wand," Star travels into her memories stored in the wand and finds the Grandma Room, where we first learn that Queen Moon fought Toffee in battle at some point in the past. The inscription beneath her tapestry reads:

The immortal monster will long be haunted by the darkest spell of Moon the Undaunted

Moon's "darkest spell" is how Toffee lost his finger -- yet the true implication of this scene is that not even Moon's magic at the peak of its power appears to have stopped Toffee in the slightest, since he later returns in Ludo's employ in "Fortune Cookies." This is the second time we learn that violence fails to stop Toffee.

The Fight in "Starcrushed"

We aren't shown Toffee's re-possession of Ludo, but here's what I think happens: out of sympathy, Moon tries to comfort Ludo -- perhaps with a pat on the head or some similar gesture -- and, as soon as she is within reach, Toffee resumes control of Ludo's body, drains Moon, and takes back the wand. Toffee waits to strike until his victim is alone and vulnerable (a tactic we see in "Marco Grows a Beard," with Star and the wand separated; in "Storm the Castle," with Marco's kidnapping; and in "Bon Bon the Birthday Clown," with the attack in the graveyard).

The Magic High Commission return just in time to see Toffee graft his arm to Ludo's body, and the fight begins. The fight is entirely one-sided, with Toffee weathering, deflecting, or repelling every attack. By the time Moon is revived, Toffee has enough power to deflect her attacks as well, leading to, once again, a decisive victory for Toffee.

Tying It All Together

I think it's important to note the kind of fighting that happens in the fight scene in "Starcrushed." If "Storm the Castle" was suggestive of modern combat, then "Starcrushed" makes use of high-fantasy medieval combat -- which befits the contrast between the younger Star and the older Moon and Magic High Commission:

Omnitraxus Prime briefly threatens Toffee with fisticuffs.

Hekapoo wields her scissors as daggers and attempts to use her magic to simply multiply her force.

Rhombulus tries to attack Toffee with his fists as well as with crystals. While this briefly distracts Toffee, it doesn't stop him.

Note that, like the Magic High Commission, Moon -- despite being probably the most-proficient magic-user present -- uses her magic in uncomplicated, violent ways: she launches magic at Toffee, tries to grapple him, and duels him with a sword. You might even say that her violence is surprisingly uncreative. I bring this up because the show wants us to realize this contrast between Moon and Star -- a contrast it shows us proof of immediately, for what is the very next scene after the fight with Toffee? It's Star, and she's casting a spell:

[Cut to a close-up of the wand.] Oskar: So you just say stuff and magic comes out? Star: Yeah, pretty much. I've even been creating my own spells. Wanna see? Oskar: Yeah, I'd be honored. Star: Okay, I haven't practiced this one too much, so if your body explodes -- whoopsie-doopsies! (laughs) That's a little magic joke for you. Oskar: Oh. (laughs nervously) Star: Okay. Sparkle Kitten Fireworks Shower! [Chaos ensues.]

The reason this scene is important is twofold: not only does it show us, through comparison, what the fight with Toffee was missing -- Star's unexpected creativity -- it also brings back to the forefront an idea that has been explicitly spelled out throughout the series: Star doesn't play by the rules; she uses her imagination. Remember what Tom and Marco say in "Mr. Candle Cares":

Marco: Hey. Isn't this ... kind of cheating? Tom: You think this is cheating? You should try playing Star at ping-pong. Marco: Well, Star doesn't really cheat. She just makes up her own rules. Tom: And then she changes the rules again halfway through the game. Marco: Oh... so that's why I never win. Tom: She just does whatever she wants. Marco: Yeah, that's Star. Tom: Yeah. She is kinda awesome.

And recall the conversation between Ludo and Glossaryck in "The Hard Way":

Ludo: So when am I going to learn a Narwhal Blast? Pshew! Pshew! Pshew! Glossaryck: Oh, oh. Oh, that. Yes, well, mm-hmm. You see, Star made that up. It's not in the book. She just used her imagination for most things. Ludo: Ooh, what's an ima-gi-na-tion?

No normal person would ever think to combine kittens with fireworks -- but Star does, and that's the real point of that scene with Oskar. Star's ability with magic is limited only by her technical proficiency and her imagination. Whereas Moon was almost certainly a more-diligent student of magic than Star is -- Star doesn't need the book. Star writes her own spells; she doesn't play by the rules.

Star uses magic in ways other people don't think to use it.

Star solves her problems in unorthodox and creative ways.

Star, Moon, and the Magic High Commission all fail to truly defeat Toffee because they played by the rules: they tried to use violence against Toffee in combat -- when Toffee is clearly superior at wielding and withstanding violence. Toffee cannot be beaten with violence.

Thematic Implications

As an immortal lizard and cynical manipulator, Toffee is comparable to a number of other mythical characters. I think though, broadly speaking, he represents the spirit of destruction: the dark impulse to extinguish life and happiness. Trying to destroy the spirit of destruction with violence only adds to it. And, appropriately enough, he is opposed by the spirit of creation as embodied in Star. It’s Star’s creativity that will be Toffee’s undoing.

Nor, as some may suggest, is love the solution to beating Toffee: thanks to the events of "Storm the Castle," Toffee is now fully aware of love as a motivating force in getting Star to dip down, and "Fortune Cookies" toys with -- and ultimately rejects, thanks to Toffee's cynical deployment of it -- the notion of love being a solution to the endless cycle of fighting.

No, the key weapon in truly defeating Toffee is imagination: it's the one thing he is not -- cannot be -- prepared for. And Star is the only person who can wield it. If she realizes this and cultivates it, she will be far more dangerous to Toffee than he could ever possibly realize.

10 Good Reasons Why You Need an Archive if You’re a Photographer

Have you ever had a moment in your life where a friend, co-worker or client comes to you and ask you for a specific image and you just can’t find the original? If you’re like me with a few Lightroom catalogs containing ten thousands of photographs, then this situation will likely happen.

With digital photography, it’s now effortless to take, process and publish images. We share more than ever before on social media and we shoot twice as much than five years ago in 2013.

All that data is easy to generate and it’s quite common for photographers to share their results every single day online. But there’s one thing that still requires some effort, something that many photographers overlook: archiving.

What’s an Archive?

The word itself comes from the Latin word archīum itself derived from Greek archeion which mean “public records” (among other things). It’s basically an accumulation of records (in this case photographs).

In a way, Lightroom catalogs are already archives. So the real question would be: what’s a good archive.

The Basics of a Photography Archive

A good archive is an organized repository, it can be filtered (by location, keywords, tags, categories, date etc…), you can make search requests on it, it has to be backed up, ideally you’d also need to be able to let other people browse it, it should be accessible regardless of your device and your location (web-based). Most importantly, it should be easy to maintain and use.

As a photographer (amateur or pro) you’re producing content and this content has value. It can be an emotional value or a financial one (or sometimes both). It makes sense to protect that value (first by having a proper backup system in place) but secondly by archiving and organizing it.

Creating Your Archive

I’ve tried a bunch of different pieces of software during the past few years, from apps (Filemaker, Evernote, Pixa) to web based solutions (Dropbox, Google Photos, EyeEm, Behance, Pixieset, Shootproof) but none of them had the set of features I needed.

Until I finally tried SmugMug.

I had seen SmugMug being used so many times already (for example on Von Wong website) but never bothered to test it.

The American company started by Chris and Don MacAskill went from a five-bedroom home with blow dryers and vacuums routinely blowing circuit breakers in 2002 to buying the giant Flickr just a month ago. Those guys are passionate about photography and it shows.

Let’s see why it’s so good to use SmugMug as an archive.

#1. It’s Complementary to Your Portfolio

A photographer website is a showcase, it should display your best work and contain a selection of projects. A good friend of mine who’s also a great photographer (Niels Ackermann) once explained to me that I was showing too much on my portfolio and he was right. I was starting out and wanted to show too many images per projects because I just couldn’t edit them down to a tight selection.

A portfolio is the curated version of your best self. It’s the beautiful display of cakes and sweets by the pastry shop window.

My portfolio is running on Squarespace and is located at samuelzeller.ch. The archive is set-up on a sub-domain and located at archive.samuelzeller.ch.

There’s a link between my portfolio and my archive, they’re complementary.

Most visitors just want to discover an overview of my work, they land on my portfolio and get an idea of what type of photography I’m doing. Some other visitors (regular ones, friends or clients) are looking for more and they can access my archive for this purpose.

#2. It’s Organized and Searchable

A portfolio can be as simple as a few slideshows. Some great photographers that I’m following have very simple websites. The structure is often similar to this one “overview, portraits, commercial, bio, contact”

There are also photographers who choose to display their work per project and with a bit more details, each project usually containing between ten and thirty images (that’s what I’m doing on my website).

A portfolio has a very linear organization — it’s mostly the main navigation and a simple structure. Your archive is much smarter than that, it can be filtered and it’s searchable. Think of it as an extension of your website.

My archive is divided by locations (countries and/or cities) but also by projects. For example at the first level I have a folder for “Geneva” which itself contains sub-folders like “Buildings, Scenes with people, etc…” this allows me to quickly find all the images that I’ve shot in this city.

At the first level I also have folders for client’s projects, for example “Verbier for Monocle��� contains about 100 images that I’ve shot last year in Verbier for Monocle magazine. They printed only six of them but I’ve archived the project (not all the images, just the 100 that I selected and sent to the client).

SmugMug has powerful tool to organize your archive. For example you can batch edit titles, tags and description.

Every single image is also organized using titles, descriptions, and tags.

This allows visitors to filter then entire archive either by searching for a specific word or by clicking on one of the tags. Tags are also conditional. You can display all images containing “snow” that are in the folder “Geneva” for example and they can be combined (display all images tagged with “architecture” then filter down the results to only show the images tagged with “winter” to view all the buildings I’ve shot during that time of the year).

#3. It’s Visible to the Public and to Search Engines

Every single day people search for images and most of them do that using Google. Having your work showing up in search results is an easy way to increase the number of people who will visit your website. But getting your work properly indexed is not as easy as it seems.

Luckily, SmugMug has a great SEO optimization. All images have title, description and tags attributes and they’re seen as structured data (they’re Schema ImageObject) which means they’ll show up quickly in Google search results.

My archive currently contains 841 images, 781 of them are recognized and indexed by Google search and Google images (the rest will be in a few days).

The more images you have on your archive the more often your work will appear in search. My archive is relatively small and new but it already displays in Google Image results about 50 times per day for various type of queries. It may not seems much but organic discoverability can play a big part in the long run in getting new clients.

#4. It Acts as a Backup

Uploading your full resolution JPEG files to an archive on the cloud also mean they’re relatively safely stored from any hazard. It doesn’t replace a full backup of your work on an external drive and on services like Backblaze (which I highly recommend — I’m currently using a Synology DS418 NAS backed up on Backblaze B2 for all my raw files) but it adds another layer of security. Photographs are our assets and we should protect them.

Note: SmugMug also has a Lightroom plugin that let you sync collections (it pulls titles, captions and tags from Lightroom too!). It is useful if you have a lot of images to upload and want to stay in Lightroom for organizing them.

#5. You Can Access It Anywhere

That’s probably one of the most useful features of having an archive online. Being able to share your work with friends, family or clients is invaluable.

As an example, yesterday I was taking photographs for Monocle, who opened a new office and cafe in Zürich, and at some point, I had to take pictures of the drinks they were serving. I took my phone and showed them some other similar shots I’ve did on past projects (that are not yet on my portfolio) and we decided together on the styling.

Not only you can share publicly visible galleries, folders, and subfolders but you can also create private ones (accessible only with a link) or password protected ones.

#6. It Gives Context To Your Work

Photography is a great tool for documentation, but single images don’t have a narrative. Visitors won’t know that this beautiful forest you captured is actually part of one of the sixty national parks in the US, they won’t understand the context and they will judge the image purely on its aesthetic value (which can be a good thing sometimes).

I know of so many photo editors and art directors who constantly bemoan the lack of captions on websites to help them understand the context in which an image has been created. So why not include them? I have yet to hear a logical answer to this question. —Grant Scott

By using the title and description fields in SmugMug (and the tags) you can easily give the viewers more information about your work.

#7. It Will Be Useful to Clients and Friends

I can’t recall the number of times I was with a friend and took my iPhone out of my pocket and showed them some work I’ve did that I had stored on my archive. It’s invaluable to have all of your work in the palm of your hand.

When I’m shooting corporate or commercial portraits I also show my archive as a reference for the client. I can quickly find past shots that encompass what I want to create on location.

The bigger your archive becomes the more likely you’ll have images that will fit your future clients in both content and style. I learned quite quickly that most clients need to see something similar to their needs in your portfolio in order to be able to project themselves and imagine what you’ll be able to create for them.

For example, it’s way easier for me to pitch images for a wine brand if I can show them an archive of images I’ve shot for a subject for Monocle magazine on Swiss wines.

#8. It Looks Professional

Maybe this is a detail but clients will appreciate when you send them a link to your archive instead of just a bunch of images on WeTransfer. They’ll be able to browse sharp images that have been automatically optimized for the web by SmugMug and download or buy the ones they need. You can even create password protected galleries and let them share the link to their colleagues and their team.

SmugMug offers plenty of customization options to make your archive look exactly the way you want it to be.

#9. It’s Built for Tomorrow

As a photographer, I’m my own boss and every project I do (personal or for a client) is another stone I add to the house I’m building. It is very important to take the time to sort old projects and present them online, but I don’t want to put everything on my portfolio. Your archive grows with you, and it’s there for the long term.

#10. It Acts as a Journal

Having an archive is a good way to build up a journal for yourself. Because all images have their EXIF data displayed, you can quickly check when you took that one shot. You can also use this to browse back in time and see what you were doing a year ago. Your archive is a repository for your memories.

Not only you can share publicly visible galleries, folders, and subfolders but you can also create private ones (accessible only with a link) or password protected ones.

#6. It Gives Context To Your Work

Photography is a great tool for documentation, but single images don’t have a narrative. Visitors won’t know that this beautiful forest you captured is actually part of one of the sixty national parks in the US, they won’t understand the context and they will judge the image purely on its aesthetic value (which can be a good thing sometimes).

I know of so many photo editors and art directors who constantly bemoan the lack of captions on websites to help them understand the context in which an image has been created. So why not include them? I have yet to hear a logical answer to this question. —Grant Scott

By using the title and description fields in SmugMug (and the tags) you can easily give the viewers more information about your work.

#7. It Will Be Useful to Clients and Friends

I can’t recall the number of times I was with a friend and took my iPhone out of my pocket and showed them some work I’ve did that I had stored on my archive. It’s invaluable to have all of your work in the palm of your hand.

When I’m shooting corporate or commercial portraits I also show my archive as a reference for the client. I can quickly find past shots that encompass what I want to create on location.

The bigger your archive becomes the more likely you’ll have images that will fit your future clients in both content and style. I learned quite quickly that most clients need to see something similar to their needs in your portfolio in order to be able to project themselves and imagine what you’ll be able to create for them.

For example, it’s way easier for me to pitch images for a wine brand if I can show them an archive of images I’ve shot for a subject for Monocle magazine on Swiss wines.

#8. It Looks Professional

Maybe this is a detail but clients will appreciate when you send them a link to your archive instead of just a bunch of images on WeTransfer. They’ll be able to browse sharp images that have been automatically optimized for the web by SmugMug and download or buy the ones they need. You can even create password protected galleries and let them share the link to their colleagues and their team.

#9. It’s Built for Tomorrow

As a photographer, I’m my own boss and every project I do (personal or for a client) is another stone I add to the house I’m building. It is very important to take the time to sort old projects and present them online, but I don’t want to put everything on my portfolio. Your archive grows with you, and it’s there for the long term.

#10. It Acts as a Journal

Having an archive is a good way to build up a journal for yourself. Because all images have their EXIF data displayed, you can quickly check when you took that one shot. You can also use this to browse back in time and see what you were doing a year ago. Your archive is a repository for your memories.
