What I Read in 2022
I read 88 books in 2022. Mostly romance (37) followed by adult science fiction and fantasy (13).
I also read a vast amount of fan-fiction, but I don’t track fic on my reading list (which I’ve kept as a .txt file on various computers since 2006).
Best Romance:
Husband Material by Alexis Hall - a lot of folks hated the ending of this one. No spoilers, but I adored it. The ending was perfectly in character for Luc and Oliver. I’m really looking forward to Hall’s upcoming 10 Things That Never Happened (which features Jonathan, an mildly unpleasant minor character in Husband Material) which comes out in October 2023.
Evie Dunmore’s historical romances were a new find for me this year, and I liked them a lot. Grumpy men! Spunky women! Hot sex! What’s not to like? The fourth book (about Catriona! My favorite, as she too is deeply introverted and has uncontrollable hair!) has no publication date on Dunmore’s website, but Amazon says it publishes in September.
KD Casey’s baseball romances were also very fun. I’ve long been a fan of Taylor Fitzpatrick’s extended hockey romance universe; I enjoyed athlete romances for a difference sport.
Most Likely to Effect Actual Change in My Life:
400 Friends and No One to Call by Val Walker - everyone who is lonely should read this book. It’s the first self-help book I’ve read that provides concrete advice for expanding your circle of support/socialization.
Out of Thin Air: Running Wisdom and Magic from Above the Clouds in Ethiopia by Michael Crawley - an anthropologist and 2:20 marathoner goes to Ethopia to study running. Hoping to put lessons from this book into practice in my own running in the coming year.
Honorable mention to Being the Change: Live Well and Spark a Climate Revolution by Peter Calms. I’m still thinking about “humanure” and admiring the depth of his commitment.
Recommended:
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas - The world-building is superb. Yadriel’s family doesn’t accept him as a brujo because he’s trans. When Yadriel accidentally brings Julian Diaz back from the dead, everybody is going to Learn Something (especially Yadriel’s family). Also (I feel like this is not a spoiler since the book is published by the Swoon Reads imprint) Yadriel and Julian’s romance is delightful.
See No Stranger by Valerie Kaur - Kaur is a Sikh American and an activist and filmmaker. I wish I could have 1/10th the compassion and grace under pressure that she does.
T. Kingfisher - Ursula Vernon is going on my short-ish list of authors who I will read based on name alone, i.e. the “I’d-read-their-grocery-list-writers.” She consistently delights. I adore the Paladins.
Goals for 2023
A more balanced book-diet. I’d like to read more broadly across genres (I read very historical nonfiction this year) and across time (the majority of what I read was published in the 21st century).
I’d also like to improve my (very rudimentary) Spanish language skills by reading picture books en español.
What did you read this year?
Romance:
Isn't It Bromantic? by Lyssa Kay Adams
Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne
One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London
A Delicate Deception by Cat Sebastian
If the Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy

A Rogue of One's Own by Evie Dunmore
The Duke Who Didn't by Courtney Milan
The Devil Comes Courting by Courtney Milan

Call the Midwife Trixie (BBC)
New Post has been published on https://walrusvideo.com/call-the-midwife-trixie-bbc/
Call the Midwife Trixie (BBC)
When it comes to “Call the Midwife’s” Trixie, there’s something unique in the way the British drama does it. It can make us feel so warm and fuzzy inside with its characters’ familiar maternal presence, but at the same time leave us gutted by the harsh realities of London’s East End in the 1960s. Who wouldn’t want to have a baby delivered by the bubbly blonde nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George)? She heralds her still-in-pin-curls arrival—to both a birth and a new season—by chirping, “magic-carpet midwifery services at your disposal!” but by the end of the episode, not even Trixie’s happy engagement news to her curate boyfriend Tom Hereward (Jack Ashton) can scrub away the agony we’ve just witnessed over the past hour.

MORE ON CALL THE MIDWIFE
Trixie from Call The Midwife
Helen George (born Helen Thomas; 19 June 1984) is the English actress who plays Trixie Franklin on the BBC TV drama series Call the Midwife. She is a highly successful and much-loved actress. In 2015, she participated in the thirteenth series of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing; she was paired with Aljaz Skorjanec and finished in sixth place.
Think that call the midwife is all vintage costumes, chubby-cheeked babies and jolly post-wartime sing-alongs? Think again. Ever since the first episode aired in 2012, the writers have made a point of featuring dark and deeply upsetting storylines – including the thalidomide scandal of the 1960s, female genital mutilation, domestic violence, rape, illegal abortions, contraception and homophobia. Through it all there has been Trixie…
Trixie Franklin – Helen George
On September 10, 2020, Helen George settled back into her “trailer” lifestyle after she shared a glamourous photo from her camper van on the set of call the midwife. However, the actress was forced to shut down any suggestion that her character nurse Trixie Franklin is due to tie the knot in the new series.
Birmingham-born actor Helen George, 35, is best known as nurse Trixie Franklin in BBC 1’s hit drama “Call the midwife”. She is currently playing the title role in the Theatre Royal Bath’s touring production of Daphne du Maurier’s my cousin Rachel.
A “Call the midwife” has responded to online trolls who have criticised her weight gain in the latest series of the show. Helen George, who plays nurse Trixie Franklin, filmed series seven while pregnant, and so has a fuller face and body than in previous shows. The 33-year-old gave birth last October to a healthy baby girl, named Wren Ivy, who she had with her partner and co-star Jack Ashton. He plays Rev Tom Hereward in the show.
BBC One – Call the Midwife – Trixie Franklin
“Call the midwife” viewers were left bereft on Sunday (11 February) night, as Trixie Franklin departed as part of her alcoholism storyline. Viewers first saw Trixie, played by Helen George, speak up about her alcohol addiction back in 2015, when she sought help from the samaritans and began attending alcoholics anonymous meetings.
Call the Midwife: how they disguised pregnant Helen George’s baby bump
BBC drama “Call the midwife” returned to PBS, and if you’re a fan, we’ve got some exciting news for you. Helen George, who plays the role of Trixie Franklin, has some real-life baby news of her own in this series. Is Helen George pregnant?
Good news “Call the midwife” fans! The powers that be have gifted us with a few teases as to what Season 10 of this heartwarming show has in store. Let’s just say we’re on the edge of our seats. Taking to Instagram yesterday, the call the midwife account shared a stunning photo of our beloved Helen George who plays Trixie Franklin, the bright and glamorous nurse with an outgoing disposition on the show.
The Call the Midwife stars who you didn’t realise are a couple in real-life
In season 7 of “Call the Midwife”, as we return to Nonatus house for season 7 of call the midwife, it is the bone-chilling winter of 1963, and we are on the cusp of the swinging ’60s that London defined. If the Beatles aren’t in the air already, they soon will be, and it’s just a year before Michael Apted’s groundbreaking documentary series begins running on British telly.
Call the midwife season 7, episode 5. Christopher (Jack Hawkins) drives nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George) to the airport. When will she return? Trixie tries to quietly exit stage left, tiptoeing out of Nonnatus House at dawn as everyone is asleep. She finds Christopher waiting outside, a surprise taxi to take her to the airport. Hang on though, we assumed she was going to a treatment facility, but she mentions Portofino and her Godmother.
Helen George stuns in a beautiful close-up photo taken by beau Jack Ashton
The “Call the midwife” season 6 Christmas special in 2016 was the one where Sister Winifred (Victoria Yeates), Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter), Dr Patrick Turner (Stephen McGann), Nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George), nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett) and nurse Barbara Gilbert (Charlotte Ritchie) go to work at hope clinic mission hospital in South Africa. No need for their trademark red cardigans there!
Helen George brings a decade of beauty, wit and growth to one of UK TV’s most iconic female characters,” they gushed in the caption. Going on to discuss all the wonderful elements which Trixie and Helen encompass. They continue, “Helen, and her peerless portrayal of Trixie from Series 1 has been an essential part of the glue that binds our community of Nonnatus House”.
Trixie – Helen George
After a tumultuous year, call the midwife is finally returning this Christmas with their annual holiday special. And while the show will be packed with beloved characters like Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan, Helen George as Trixie, and laura main’s Shelagh, fans may notice one conspicuous absence from the lineup. After four seasons on the show, Jennifer Kirby who plays nurse Valerie Dyer has announced her departure from call the midwife.
While producers of call the midwife were able to, thankfully, ‘deliver’ the Annual Christmas special just in time for Christmas day 2020, the full season of the drama did not arrive in time for its usual January slot this year thanks to covid-19 and a five-month production delay. But, there seems to be light at the end of the poplar tunnel….
Call the Midwife shares first picture from Series 10 – and teases exciting Trixie Franklin plotline
“Call the midwife”s” nurse Trixie will still be struggling with alcoholism and series seven will feature “painful” storylines for the popular character. Helen George’s character, who has been on the hit BBC period drama since series 1, is currently in a happy relationship with dentist Christopher (Jack Hawkins).
Call the Midwife casts Leonie Elliott as new West Indian Midwife
Well, it’s likely to be the same line-up as the Christmas special. That featured. Jenny Agutter (Sister Julienne), Linda Bassett (nurse Crane), Judy Parfitt (Sister Monica Joan), Fenella Woolgar (sister Hilda), Ella Bruccoleri (sister Frances), Helen George (Trixie), Laura Main (Shelagh Turner), Leonie Elliott (Lucille), Stephen McGann (Dr Turner), Cliff Parisi (Fred), Annabelle Apsion (Violet), Georgie Glen (Miss Higgins), Max Macmillan (Timothy), Daniel Laurie (Reggie) and Zephyr Taitte (Cyril).
Call the Midwife season ten: everything we know so far
Helen George has become a fixture in the Christmas viewing schedule for the last eight years, stepping into the role of the glamorous midwife Trixie in “Call the midwife”. The series spanning the 50s and 60s is the heartwarmer we all need this Christmas. Helen George doesn’t just reserve the glamour for her on-screen character. The actor regularly shares images of her own stunning home that she shares with partner Jack Ashton and daughter Wren.
Call the Midwife shares new sneak-peek at series 10
“Call the midwife” star Helen George has unveiled a stunning new hair transformation. The 25-year-old actress is best known for playing Nurse Trixie Franklin in the beloved medical drama. She is also known for her bright blonde locks, but now the mum-of-one has gone and transformed her look with a new shorter cut.
I was so sad when Reverend Tom and Trixie ended their engagement and Barbara Gilbert starting dating Tom. Tom and Barbara didn’t seem a likely match. I really hated the scene when they are dancing to “ teach me tiger” by April Stevens. Zero sparks there. With Tom and Trixie, this scene would have been sizzling. The actors that played tom ( Jack Aston ) and Trixie ( Helen George) were really involved in 2016 and had a baby together although not engaged or married.
Characters from Call the Midwife
“Call the Midwife Trixie” (BBC) Holiday Special 2020 cast: Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt), sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter), May Turner (April Rae Hoang), nurse Lucille Anderson (Leonie Elliott), Trixie (Helen George), Angela Turner (Alice Brown), nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett). It is in December 1965. Everyone at Nonnatus house is looking forward to traditional celebrations with all the trimmings, but nothing goes quite to plan.
All of your favourites will be back for the Christmas special.
More on “Call the Midwife”
“Are we going to close after all?” Nurse Trixie asked but she was assured Nonnatus house would be safe. Sister Julienne divulged: “No. We are going to expand. Early next year I will be revealing further details”.
Characters from Call the Midwife
Helen was pregnant during the filming of series 7 of call the midwife. Her character nurse Trixie Franklin made an emotional exit from the show after Helen’s baby bump began to show and couldn’t be hidden. To create a plausible exit for her, nurse Trixie was seen seeking help after spiralling back into alcoholism.
Resume
Helen George was born on June 19, 1984, in Birmingham, West Midlands, England as Helen Elizabeth George. She is an actress, known for the three musketeers (2011), call the midwife (2012) and the monster (2015). She was previously married to Oliver Boot.
Nurse Trixie has been the life and soul of Nonnatus house since the very first episode of call the midwife in 2012. Trixie loves nothing more than to gossip with her fellow nuns and nurses and enjoys poking her nose into other people’s business.
Helen George stars as nurse Trixie Franklin
Between biking around poplar, working late nights, and dealing with lots of crying babies (and mothers), the midwives of Nonnatus House don’t often get the chance to dazzle with their hair and makeup, but for the real-life actresses who play them, walking the red carpet is just another day in the life. In preparation for the show’s upcoming ninth season, here’s a look at what the characters call the midwife really look like.
The entire episode of call the midwife has me broken. Trixie deserves better honestly she’s just so selfless and it makes me so emotional.
All about Call the Midwife
Set in the 1950s and 60s in the East End of London, “Call the Midwife” is a period drama television series that centres around a group of midwives and nuns of Nonnatus house. They are trying to do the best they can for the community, given the medical issues and lack of facilities. Created by Heidi Thomas, the show first released in the UK on January 15, 2012, on BBC !.
Call the midwife sadly will not be back on TV screens in December 2020 as the filming of the new episodes was pushed back due to the pandemic. The BBC has confirmed the official date when Series 10 will return, however fans have been treated to a behind-the-scenes image of one iconic character.
Where is Trixie on “Call the Midwife” Season 7? We can understand the episode picking up tonight and there are many out there who are asking said question almost immediately. So, where is she? It’s a pretty simple question with a fairly simple answer: Trixie is off getting some time away from Nonnatus, presumably to recover from her recent struggles with alcohol abuse. She allowed her addiction to get the best of her and, as a result of that, put herself in a position where she could harm some other people with her habits.
“Call the Midwife” fans were in tears after Sunday night’s finale (23 February), which featured a devastating death and a powerful moment for Trixie Franklin. The season 9 finale was hailed for its sensitive handling of Ann Mitchell’s character Elsie Dyer battling against Oesophagus cancer while being cared for by her distraught niece, Jennifer Kirby’s nurse Valerie.
One of the things that we’ve come to learn with call the midwife over time is that effectively, nobody is spared from a medical emergency. That includes Shelagh and Dr Turner’s au pair Magda, who found herself at the centre of some controversy over an illness. Famous Muses & Groupies in Rock Music Pt. 43
MUSE: Valerie Kairys
Valerie was born on April 24th, 1945 in Germany before her family migrated back to the US in Albuquerque, NM when she was 5 and then to Los Angeles, CA by the time she was 7 years old. When Valerie was a senior at Hollywood High School, she was discovered Lana Turner style while working at the optometrist when casting director Michael McLean, walked up to ask her “Would you like to be in movies?” (Some girls have all the luck.) But rather than mentored to be the next big starlet, Valerie would spend the next decade as a fulltime extra and stand-in on Hollywood sets. Two of the first movies she worked on were Robert Aldrich’s Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964) and Jerry Lewis’ Three on a Couch (1966). In December 1965, Val was hired by showrunner Bert Schneider to be Davy Jones’ stand-in for the original pilot of the sitcom “The Monkees.” She was then quickly signed for the rest of the series not only because she was the perfect height, but because she could travel anytime and got along with everyone on set.
Valerie appeared on screen in “The Monkees” more than any other extra, spotted in at least 15 episodes. She’s most noticeable as a background character in ‘The Spy Who Came in From the Cool’ (1966), ‘Too Many Girls’ (1966), and the final episode ‘Mijacogeo’ (1968). In ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Kidnappers’ (1966), ‘Monkees a la mode’ (1967) and ‘Some Like It Lukewarm’ (1968), she even had legitimate guest speaking roles. Val can also be seen in a crowd shot of the Monkees’ movie Head (1968) during the ‘jumper’ scene. Besides “The Monkees,” Valerie also appeared in the episodes ‘The Sandman Cometh’ (1966) and ‘The Catwoman Goeth’ (1966) of “Batman” as Julie Newmar’s ‘hench-kitten;’ and can be spotted in the movies Shadow of the Land (1968) and Myra Breckinridge (1970). Her last gig as an extra was with the cult film Vanishing Point in 1971.
As far as celeb buddies go, it sounds like Micky Dolenz might be the Monkee she hung out with the most based on the stories she’s shared over the years. During the middle of the second season, Valerie’s dad died and she’s said she spent the rest of the day after his funeral at Micky’s house. In general, she usually describes the four musicians/actors as like ‘her four big brothers,’ which is what her friendships with Davy and Peter Tork seem like when she talks about them. Cool fact: right after the first pilot was shot, Peter spent three nights at Valerie’s and her roommate’s apartment because he was still living couch-to-couch Inside Llewyn Davis style at that point.
With Mike Nesmith, Val usually gushes about how much of a ‘true gentleman’ he is and secretly a ‘sensitive soul,’ and how she idolized him when they were young. (Seriously, she almost teared up talking about him on the Zilch podcast). I mean, I get it, but this is also hilarious considering how often Ann Moses throws Mike under the bus and accuses him of the complete opposite, lmao. In 1970, Valerie began a relationship with successful record producer Nik Venet, whom she would be married to until his death in 1998. The couple had one son together, also called Nik, and they raised him in Topanga Canyon, CA. Fun fact: Nik Sr. produced the Stone Poneys’ 1967 cover of Mike’s song ‘Different Drum,’ which became the first hit song for lead singer Linda Ronstadt. It was Nik’s idea to make the tune more upbeat rather than slow like Mike’s arrangement, much to both Mike’s and Linda’s surprise.
These days Valerie sometimes makes cameos in indie films and occasionally appears at Monkees fan conventions, podcasts and Q&As. Apparently during a Q&A in the early 2000s, songwriter Bobby Hart told her that the Monkees’ hit ‘Valleri’ was written for her. But Val also later found out that Bobby’s high school sweetheart had the same name, so she thinks he might have just been being nice in the moment.
(Also, in regards to Valerie and Ann being the two girls who spent the most time on the Monkees’ TV set; I find it funny/weird that A) they never acknowledge each other’s existence in interviews, B) both strongly deny being aware of the band’s off camera drama back then, lol.)

Wishes for the Future:
This is what you fans want to see happen this year or next year. This is not a popularity category, like do not reflect the general GH audience on Tumblr, but more the individual fans. And one of them we have already gotten.
- Jax makes a full time return.
- Kiki to not get pregnant with Griffin’s baby.
- Britt to return and meet her nephew James West.
- Kristina, Dillon, Valerie, Ric and Brook Lynn Ashton to return
- Franco and Nelle to die.
- Cameron finally being SORAS.
- Griffin and Elizabeth or Drew and Elizabeth to happen.
- Kim and Drew, with his memories intact.
- Other pairings that are missed include: Nikolas and Emily, Ric and Alexis, Jax and Carly, Nikolas and Britt, Dillon and Georgie, Alan and Monica, AJ and Elizabeth and Curtis and Valerie.
Do you agree with the winners this year? What do you disagree with? Please share your thoughts if you want to.

Last book I read: I still haven't finished There's No Such Thing as an Easy Job Kikuko Tsumura I started back in January, lmao. Not for any reason other than I just haven't been in the right headspace to sit down and read for the past few months--What I have read of it is great, so hopefully, I can make the time to pick it up again.
Greatest literary inspirations: I like the female protags in Karin Slaughter novels, and I love Tanya Huff's Torin Kerr from her Confederation series--I'm sure they've inspired me on some level. Oh, and Phedre from Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel books, too, although it's been ages since I read those. But I think most of my inspiration actually comes from other forms of media. I love the action babes of the late 90s/early 00s: Lara Croft is the number one inspo here, and pretty much all of Michael Turner's comic girls but especially Sara from Witchblade. And I think Better Call Saul is easily one of the best-written shows ever made--That's one I always go back to when I feel like I need to refill the inspo well.
Things in my current fandoms I want to read but I don't want to write: I have a confession: I usually only read a ton of fic when I first get into a fandom and I can't get enough and I just want to soak it all up, but after a certain point, I just don't have a lot of headspace for other people's stories. 😬 I feel bad about it sometimes, and it's not like I never read anything after that point, but 90% of the time, what I wanna write is what I wanna read. It's kind of a closed loop, I guess.
Things in my current fandoms I want to write but I think nobody would be interested in them but me: Well, I'm not at all deterred by being the only person interested in something I write, haha. One of my favorite one-shots I've ever written is between my Cousland and Hawke meeting briefly at Ostagar, and it's probably my least popular fic on AO3 by a big margin. But I do like deep-diving into my own OCs, and it generally is harder to get an audience for fic that doesn't have canon characters. Ain't gonna stop me, though!
You can recognize my writing by: Lots of pining and banter; obvious thesaurus abuse
My most controversial take (current fandom): Yeah, no, not gonna be sharing my actual most controversial takes, lmao.
But I do also love the Devil ending! I don't think there's one objectively "best" ending--What's good for one V isn't necessarily good for another--But for my Valerie, it suited her story the best. I love the poetry of her going back to Arasaka after getting fired by them, I love storming Arasaka Tower with Goro, I love the conflict with Johnny, I love making Goro confront how fucked up the Arasakas are, I love the possibilities of Mikoshi--The only way it would have been better for me is if this nixed idea had actually been put into action.
And I wish we could roleplay a V that is actually more "pro"-corpo in the game, especially if we had the corpo lifepath. Sticking it to the man is sexy and all, but I just love delving into characters that align themselves with shitty institutions and exploring different motivations (I personally like cynical pragmatism/self-preservation and delusional idealism) that lead a person there.
Top three favorite tropes: 1) Rivals to friends to lovers 2) Mutual pining 3) Forced proximity
What’s your current writing mood (10 – super motivated and churning out words like crazy, 0 – in a complete rut): Like, 0.5, lmao. I've been rereading and organizing my WIPS, so there's some effort being put in there, but I'm very much in one of my "ummmm, how do I even write fiction?" phases.
Share a random frustration: I have ZERO discipline when it comes to writing. I need to be in a fully feral, totally isolated from distractions place or I just can't get shit done. When I'm in the zone, I'm in the fuckin' zone, but I get like 3 months of that every 5 years, lmao.
Tagging (with no pressure, as always) @ur-friendly-nbhd-cardassian, @dread-red-queen, @vorchagirl, and @aceghosts <333

New This Week: Josh Turner, Bush, Charli XCX, and More
Tumblr media
Searching for something to listen to this weekend? Yahoo Music has you covered with a rundown of some of this week’s biggest/buzzing releases, including Josh Turner, Bush, Charli XCX, and more. Check back every Friday for a fresh list of albums to help fuel your weekend playlists.
Josh Turner: Deep South (MCA Nashville). The multiplatinum-selling country star with the deep, deep voice hasn’t released an album in five years — a lag his fans have felt keenly. Here he returns finally with his sixth album, which shows off a seasoned maturity and confidence in both his professional and personal lives.
youtube
Peter Murphy: Bare Boned and Sacred (Metropolis). Murphy is, of course, most famed for being the godfather of Goth in his historic role as Bauhaus frontman. His solo career offered up a considerable handful of hits, though, as well – many of which are included in this new live collection. Murphy also pays tribute to the late David Bowie with a cover of his 1971 “Bewlay Brothers.”
youtube
Bush: Black and White Rainbows (Zuma Rock). It’s impossible to listen to the latest release by Bush without wondering if it was influenced by the obvious – namely frontman Gavin Rossdale’s rather ugly divorce from fellow star Gwen Stefani. The answer is yes, but Rossdale handles the subject in a surprisingly non-cliché way, injecting a modicum of hope into strong melodies that stand up to his band’s classic work.
youtube
Charli XCX: Number 1 Angel (Asylum): This is Charli XCX’s first mixtape since 2012’s Super Ultra. It’s not exactly a party album, as it’s weighted down with a fair amount of gloomier sentiment, but fans will appreciate the musical power and fine production regardless of mood.
youtube
Chickenfoot: Best + Live (Chickenfoot LLC/eOne Music). Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony, and Chad Smith are here to please fans with the ultimate set: A best-of, plus a live 2009 concert recording, and – cherry on the sundae – a brand-new song called “Divine Termination.” Rock!
youtube
Hurray for the Riff Raff: The Navigator (ATO). The New Orleans band, led by Alynda Segarra, traverses a narrative journey in which Segarra explores her Puerto Rican heritage through the eyes of a fictional character. The set touches on many subjects poignant in this day and age, of which immigration is certainly not the least.
youtube
Fairport Convention: 50:50@50 (Matty Grooves). Fairport Convention, the UK’s most influential folk-rock band, decided to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a collection of half-live, half-studio recordings – a mix between old favorites and brand-new tunes. Classic rock icon Robert Plant provides guest vocals on one of the tracks.
Laura Marling: Semper Femina (More Alarming). British folk singer-songwriter Marling is on her sixth release, and this one is a smart and sharp lens on the female experience. If thinking isn’t your thing, best to avoid this intelligent and witty album.
youtube
Sunny Sweeney: Trophy (Aunt Daddy/Thirty Tigers). Texas singer-songwriter Sweeney brings spice, twang, and surprising twists and turns of emotion on her fourth release. Lori McKenna assisted with writing four of the songs on this heartfelt and complex release.
youtube
Valerie June: The Order of Time (Concord). On her sophomore release, June paints detailed stories of real life, all rolled into her unique brew of folky/bluesy vibes. Norah Jones provides piano accompaniment on several of the tracks.
youtube
The Shins: Heartworms (Aural Apothecary/Columbia). The Shins take matters into hand with their fifth album – literally, as frontman James Mercer helms up both songwriting and production. The result is a richly lyrical brew that hankers back to some of the band’s earlier material while still taking a step forward.
youtube
Beauty and the Beast (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Walt Disney): The much-talked-about live action version of Disney’s 1991 animated classic –s tarring Emma Watson — hits theaters on March 17. The score contains three new recordings of the original movie’s songs, as well as three original compositions written just for this version.

Roger Moore, Debonair 007 in Seven James Bond Movies, Dies at 89
Roger Moore, the suave British actor who put romance before ruthlessness in his portrayal of James Bond in seven of the famous franchises films, has died. He was 89.

He died Tuesday in Switzerland “after a short but brave battle with cancer,” Moores three children said in a letter shared on their fathers Twitter account. “We know our own love and admiration will be magnified many times over, across the world, by people who knew him for his films, his television shows and his passionate work for Unicef, which he considered to be his greatest achievement,” they wrote.
For 12 years, from “Live and Let Die” (1973) through “A View to a Kill” (1985), Moore owned the role of Agent 007, the martini-drinking, lady-loving British spy introduced in the novels of Ian Fleming. His take on the character was compared, inevitably, to that of Sean Connery, the original movie Bond.
“Gone were the macho toughness and ruthlessness of Connerys Bond,” wrote Michael Di Leo in “The Spy Who Thrilled Us: A Guide to the Best of Cinematic James Bond” (2002). “In their place, Moore played up Bonds suave and humorous side, and his films reflected this new tone.”
Moores take on the beloved film character generated mixed reactions, as reflected in surveys and polls done in 2012 to mark the 50th anniversary of Bond films. 313744903

Third Place
A poll of Americans by CBSs “60 Minutes” and Vanity Fair magazine ranked Moore as third-best of the six movie Bonds, behind Connery and Pierce Brosnan. He came in third, after Connery and Daniel Craig, in a survey by the U.K.s Guardian newspaper. He ranked fourth, ahead of short-timers Timothy Dalton and George Lazenby, in a 2012 survey by NPR.
For his part, Moore said Craig, who took over the part in 2006, became his favorite Bond with “Skyfall” (2012).
In his 2008 memoir, “My Word Is My Bond,” Moore took issue with the rap that he — or anyone else, for that matter — could portray Bond too lightly.
He wrote of Bond: “How can he be a spy, yet walk into any bar in the world and have the bartender recognize him and serve him his favorite drink? Come on, its all a big joke.”
Roger George Moore was born on Oct. 14, 1927, in southwest London, the only child of George Moore, a police constable and amateur actor, and the former Lily Pope. With his grammar-school classmates, he was evacuated to southern England from 1939 to 1941 to escape the German bombing of London.
Army Service
At 18, following a year at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he was called to military service and served with the British Army in postwar Germany.
Back in London at 21, he acted in plays on stage and television, then moved to New York, where he found roles in two episodes of the television drama series “Robert Montgomery Presents.” Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. gave him a film contract, and he debuted on the big screen in “The Last Time I Saw Paris” (1954), with Elizabeth Taylor.
He got to kiss Lana Turner, in “Diane” (1956), before MGM cut him loose. He starred in the British TV series “Ivanhoe” in 1958-1959, then was signed by Warner Bros. Studios for films such as “The Miracle” (1959) and “ The Sins of Rachel Cade” (1961). He joined the cast of “Maverick,” the ABC Western, in 1960 as its star, James Garner, was leaving.

In “The Saint,” which aired in the U.K. on ITV, Moore found his biggest pre-Bond role, as Simon Templar, a roguish criminal with Robin Hood values. The show was picked up by NBC for an American audience.
Bond Role
Moore was working on another ITV series, “The Persuaders!” — with Tony Curtis — when James Bond came calling.
He was friends with Albert “Cubby” Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, producers of the Bond movies, from Londons gambling clubs. After Connery finished his six-picture run with “Diamonds Are Forever” (1971), Broccoli and Saltzman offered Moore the role.
In reviewing Moores debut, “Live and Let Die,” New York Times critic Vincent Canby found him “more than acceptable in the role that made Sean Connery rich and unhappy with type-casting.” On the other hand, Richard Schickel of Time magazine said Moore and his co-stars “suffer a sort of weightlessness, a lack of humanness, which is what Sean Connery as 007 lent previous Bond adventures.”
Toughen Up
In Moores second Bond feature, “The Man with the Golden Gun” (1974), director Guy Hamilton “wanted to toughen up my Bond a little,” Moore wrote, partly by having him threaten to break the arm of the villains girlfriend, played by Maud Adams.
“That sort of characterization didnt sit easily with me,” Moore wrote. “I suggested my Bond would have charmed the information out of her by bedding her first. My Bond was a lover and a giggler. However, Guy was keen to make my Bond a little more ruthless, as Flemings original had been.”

“The Spy Who Loved Me” (1977), which introduced the henchman known as Jaws, played by 7-foot, 2-inch Richard Kiel, is often cited as the best of Moores seven Bond films.
It was followed by “Moonraker” (1979), again with Kiel as Jaws; “For Your Eyes Only” (1981); a reunion with Adams in “Octopussy” (1983); and, finally, “A View to a Kill,” released when Moore was 57. The Bond franchise was then passed to Dalton.
Moore insisted he was a grateful star throughout his Bond tenure, having “never forgotten my roots and how lucky I have been.” Broccoli gave a conflicting account in an autobiography he finished just before his death in 1996.
Sizable Ego
In the book, co-written by Donald Zec, Broccoli said Moore grew a sizable ego and by the end was springing “bizarre, neurotic little tricks,” such as demanding private planes and declining to appear at promotional events.
Moore spoofed his Bond connection in the all-star comedy “The Cannonball Run” (1981). His character, Seymour Goldfarb Jr., tells a menacing biker, “I must warn you, Im Roger Moore!” Unimpressed, the biker slugs him in the mouth.
Long active with the United Nations Childrens Fund, Moore was knighted in 2003 by Queen Elizabeth II.
Moores first three marriages, to ice skater Doorn van Steyn, singer Dorothy Squires and Italian actress Luisa Mattioli, ended in divorce. With Mattioli, he had three children: Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian. In 2002, he married Christina Tholstrup.
