star trek update time!! saturday we watched voy's "jetrel" and ds9's "family business" and last night we did voy's "learning curve" and ds9's "shakaar."

jetrel (voy):

this came so, so, so close to being one of my voyager must-sees, and i actually really did like most of it, but the wild out-of-nowhere turn at the end really ruined it for me

i was very VERY surprised that the guy playing neelix like, fucking acted this so well. love and light to the tng cast but i don't know that any of them could cry on cue except of course sir patrick stewart, whose character i sadly don't care about

i also loved neelix's story about the traps... "i had become so fascinated with my invention i never thought about how the poor creatures would suffer" aimed directly at the man responsible for the mass murder of his people was really good

AND i thought he and kes were really sweet this episode. he's worried about their differing lifespans which is spirkcore :(

that said...i mean this in the most disrespectful was possible...this felt like a tng episode at the beginning and end. like the middle was REALLY good. it brought a lot of depth to neelix. but the fucking atom bomb apologism happening in this episode was like. reprehensible lmao

first, we've got janeway in the beginning...like, the scene where neelix tells her who this guy is and about what happened to his family was SO good. she was appropriately horrified and they both acted the hell out of it. she even acts as go-between so neelix doesn't have to talk to this guy!

but then, why let him on board at all? why try to go back to neelix and convince him to see him? and she jumps at the chance to fly out to the moon this guy DESTROYED if it means a chance to cure neelix - without asking neelix's opinion first. she trusts this guy WAY too easily. i will never fucking understand society's obsession with stanning oppenheimer as like, someone cool and fascinating worthy of this kind of dissection. if anything, he's a cautionary tale.

then we have the end, which came out of NOWHERE...neelix is a deserter because he disagreed with what his people were doing? we didn't get so much of a mention as to what his people were doing prior to this moment right here, so it does absolutely nothing to complicate the issue and everything to muddy it. it's then muddied FURTHER five seconds later when he's like well no i deserted bc i was a coward! like, which is it, was it a moral thing or a being afraid of death thing? it's fine if he doesn't know and it's fine if we're not supposed to know but i think if we're not supposed to know we should be TOLD that

also like. surely "we had to drop the atom bomb on the civilian populations as a show of power" was an old tired argument even in 1995. it's not original.

finally, kes saying that neelix didn't need to hate jetrel and she knows that all along his hatred has been aimed at himself...IT CAN BE BOTH. you can have survivor's guilt and you can hate the person who bombed your home out of existence. and HAVING survivor's guilt/deserting the army is NOT an equal crime to dropping the fucking ATOM BOMB and it doesn't make neelix "just as bad" like it's not the fucking gotcha these writers think it is. kes is essentially telling him he SHOULD feel guilty and hate himself for surviving, except not really, because hating people is bad, so he should forgive himself AND jetrel

DESPITE. BY THE WAY. JETREL LYING TO ALL OF THEM THE ENTIRE TIME. scene fucking one and neelix is like no we can't trust that guy and HE WAS RIGHT

neelix isn't dying and jetrel isn't trying to find a cure, he is trying to reassemble those poor people to ease his own conscience (which would do more harm than good, the person they tried to bring back was obviously sufering, like that one alien from emanations). and still janeway and kes were like but neelix he's so sad about it

the lesson of this episode SHOULD have been "you can't bring back the dead and you MUST value life over scientific achievement" but instead it was "let's forgive oppenheimer even though he doesn't deserve it because we're so fascinated by the fact that he feels kinda guilty."

they could have fixed this so easily but cutting the forgiveness scene and having kes tell neelix literally anything other than "you're not being fair to oppenheimer here :(" like this devils advocate both sideism shit is SO tng it's physically painful. all we had to do was condemn mass murder. it's not hard! this was almost voyager's version of duet from ds9. SIGH

AND LIKE. lmao sorry i came back to edit this bullet in. i just re-skimmed the transcript and the way neelix was like maybe the bomb was punishment for all of us...for our hatred...so you think japanese CITIZENS needed to be punished for their GOVERNMENT entering ww2? absolutely fucking appalling. not only that, but it can't be your end line and your final gutpunch moment when NO effort was expended on telling us anything about the war or what neelix's people were doing that was so bad the CHILDREN deserved to be bombed

at the very least, it did make me like and become interested in neelix as a character. i didn't DISLIKE him before, i love his little jackets, etc etc etc, but it's not the same as knowing his whole deal. and KNOWING amount of pain he's been through puts a new perspective on his general attitude - many other characters with neelix's backstory would be surly, angry, have trouble connecting with others, typical edgelords etc. and i LOVE those kinds of guys. but neelix CHOOSES to be cheerful and silly and sweet and gentle, and i really love that too.

also, final note, even though it involves the holodeck, i wouldn't be mad if pool became voyager's poker. i like them having a Thing!

family business (ds9):

i dont really...understand the point of ferengi episodes. like, some episodes are hah arent ferengi funny little guys! which, aside from ferengi themselves being antisemetic stereotypes, is fine. i hate them, but other people like them, so whatever. but the episode with the cross-dressing ferengi and especially the mom...theyre like hey it sucks to be a woman ferengi! and quark's like yeah but that's not my problem. and they argue about it the whole episode like quark will you change your mind ever? and he's like no. and theyre like ok then bye. they either part ways or his mom agrees to start following ferengi laws again or whatever

like, i don't think this episode really developed quark as a character...it did shed some light on how he grew up, but considering the sheer level of misogyny happening to his mother, i found it really hard to care about any aspects of his tragic backstory about not being the favorite child or whatever. rom is so much more likable and you actually feel bad for him because he could have been great with the robotics etc and was stuck being quark's henchman

like, i swear every time they say female i want to tell them to go back to reddit.

like, i'm not a total killjoy here. sometimes misogyny is funny, like in that episode where scotty gets possessed by piglet and keeps serial killing women. 10/10 one of my all-time favs. but somehow, and trust me ik it's all subjective, ferengi stuff feels worse than that.

i feel like "females arent allowed to wear clothes!" was a one-off line in the worst season of the worst star trek show (the introduction of the ferengi was SO BAD they scrapped them as series-long villains) and they took that and ran with it and were like teehee but it's okay because it's their CULTURE we have to respect other CULTURES that's the prime directive TONY YOU CHOSE. TO WRITE THE CULTURE LIKE THAT. GROW A PAIR.

learning curve (voy):

this was tuvok's galileo seven. to veer slightly off topic here, my issue w galileo seven is that there's a bit where spock goes "ah my first command how could it have all gone so wrong" despite having actively ignored or belittled everyone's emotions during this highly emotional time. spock is not FUCKING stupid. he works with humans. he lived with a human mother growing up. he is in fact: half human. he knows how emotions work. he knows that if a spaceship is crashed and a guy dies there will be unpleasant emotions happening. and yet somehow he is surprised that, when not taking human emotion into account or allowing for its existence, things go poorly. HE WOULD NOT FUCKING SAY THAT. he knows, better than anyone on earth, the difference between humans and vulcans

tuvok is not half-human but he is also not an idiot. he's worked with janeway for years and he was quite literally an undercover agent with the maquis. he knows how they do things and what they value. he taught humans AT THE ACADEMY for YEARS. he can meet them in the middle!!! vulcans don't do emotions but they do HAVE AND UNDERSTAND them and whoever wrote this episode did not understand tuvok

like, the entire reason for the lessons was to make the maquis guys feel more at home. boot camp does not make people feel more at home. it breaks them down and builds them up but the thing is people go to boot camp mostly willingly, or, in this universe they go willingly. the maquis guys did not ask to be here. they do not want to be here. you can't just fix them with boot camp

also, the way janeway and chakotay hatched this plan and then threw tuvok into the deep end...nobody was going to them to be like hey why do we need to be doing this, they were talking to tuvok.

i did REALLY like chakotay hitting that guy on the grounds of how outrageously problematic it is. he's like YOU WANT TO DO THINGS THE MAQUIS WAY? and then just suckerpunched and said he'd KEEP beating the shit out of him until he followed orders. absolutely horrific, totally uncalled for, and completely out of line. i fucking loved it. i wish we got more of chakotay trying to find the balance between maquis and starfleet people bc that really feels like it should be HIS plot and arc - he fits in well with both but also feels a little alienated by both at times. the true spock of this series

speaking of spock, there was SOME justice for galileo seven - in that episode, there's a b-plot involving one of the guys potentially having to stay behind because of the weight limit. i assumed the entire time spock was coldly talking about this plan that he intended for HIMSELF to be the man who stayed behind, thereby both redeeming him from his earlier mistakes AND illustrating he did understand emotion and value life...and then it got abandoned and not brought up again. so when tuvok forbid the ensign to save his friend because HE HIMSELF intended to run back into danger and do it, that was a little cathartic i cannot lie. still a bad concept overall though.

neelix moment!! neelix noticed when tuvok sat on the wrong side of the table <3 i wish they had more scenes together, they're such a funny little pair

i liked tuvok and that one guy playing pool together, at least in concept. i still think the concept of this episode is bad, but hearing about maquis experiences, letting them voice their concerns and air their grievances, directly to starfleet people, would probably go a long way towards mutual understanding. they're all stuck out here, but tuvok's wife of 67 years is waiting for him at home and the only girl this maquis guy ever loved got raped and murdered. i was a little iffy on that by the way but i think i'm so used to tv censoring stuff like that that it feels ballsy for them to just SAY it instead of using euphemisms. even tos couldn't have got away with that, and it doesn't FEEL like they're doing it for shock value or (like in tng) for fetish reasons. it's a running trend in ds9 that they're not afraid to do an unflinching portrayal of like, the violence of colonizers and occupiers, and i think in this particular scene voyager was attempting to channel some of that energy, and it mostly succeeded, it's just that the rest of the episode sucked so bad.

the b-plot of this episode was quite charming. the cheese which infected the biomechanical ship. GET THAT CHEESE TO SICKBAY! 10/10 lines and credit where it is due

shakaar (ds9):

i have become the very thing i sought to destroy because despite my intense dislike of the word bitch, and the fact that i almost never use it otherwise, i am readily shouting it at my screen every time kai wynn opens her fucking mouth. i HAVE to stop. it's turning me into a misogynist. it's turning me into a fucking ferengi.

that said, she is a bitch and i hate her so much!!! i didn't even LIKE bareil and she still needs to get his name out of her mouth. jesus christ on a bike

this episode is kinda similar to learning curve in that we're presented with a few one-off characters we are likely to only see a few times from now if at all (shakaar himself excluded, i'm pretty sure he and kira date later) and asked to care about them. ds9 did a much better job at establishing the kind of camaraderie you really care about...the story about the guy giving up his arm and feeling lucky hit even harder than the dead girlfriend maquis guy story. and i REALLY liked how at home kira was with them, in a different way than she is on ds9...never forget she is and always will be a bajoran terrorist and GOOD for her.

i feel like we could have gone more into why wynn wanted those soil thingies so bad. was it because she wanted to boost her image up by exporting shit again or is she just a horrible control freak? meanwhile the planet is starving and she was already a sure win since no one was opposing her...shot her own damn self in the fucking foot

i liked shakaar actually, and i'm not looking forward to him and kira breaking up eventually even though it's got to happen before kira/odo, because they either break up because he is a bad person and she'll be sad, or because he doesn't want her anymore and she'll be sad, or because he's dead and she'll be sad. please treat her really niceys

anyway it was great because kira realized she couldn't kill a fellow bajoran and put her weapon down and i was TOTALLY expecting him to be like whats wrong with you arent you on our side have you sold out to starfleet have you gone soft i cant believe you'd pussy out now BUT THEN HE ALSO. PUT HIS WEAPON DOWN. AND THEY JUST TALKED ABOUT IT. so many times serialized tv rely on plots that only work if everybody is fucking stupid and no one talks to each other (see: learning curve) so it was a HUGE deal for me when this actually happened. i was neutral on shakaar until this point and now i am like he is my friend. even if kira could do better. girl, odo is right there.

AND he's running against winn!!! def has my vote

b-plot for this episode was charming. nobody else had anything to do so they had to stick em in quark's to play dart. quark was ALMOST normal enough in this episode to get me back to square one but i did also derive pleasure from his gambling misfortunes. also, it's hilarious that o'brien is turning to darts so heavily in this wifeless time that he's blowing out his shoulder. he's wrung every last bit out of racketball that he could and now he's destroying darts. what will he turn to next..........

This is a re-write of a story I posted here years ago. I was thinking about it, so I re-read it and *REALLY* didn’t like how it had come together. I fixed some inconsistancies and changed the wording of some things. I like this version a lot better. Hopefully I didn’t miss anything this time around. Maybe I’ll use these characters again, but idk.

TW; blood, vomiting, fainting

The last orc slumped to the dirt with an audible thump. Tyrmorn lowered his hands and drew in a shaky breath. Adrenaline still coursed through him as he observed the grounds. He eyed a frontman on his knees with a hand over his abdomen. Blood flowed thickly from his fingers. He recognized him as the man who took a devastating broadsword slash to protect him, the crown prince of the massive Bastide they had been fighting to defend. Swearing, he approached the man.

"Prince Tyrmorn," was all the man gasped as he looked up at the sorcerer. He tried his hardest to bow.

"Hey, I've got you. Stay with me, big guy," he said with a hard swallow. He muttered a slow incantation and placed a hand on the man's forehead and the other over the hand covering the life-threatening wound. By now, the team had gathered around the two of them, whispering in awe of the rare sight.

"Tyrmorn, You've used too much Magic," a voice cut through the crowd. He recognized it as Kes, his Mate. Kes was right, and he knew it, but he wouldn’t allow the selfless frontman to be simply stabilized. There was much too high of a risk of infection if he didn't heal him completely. He felt he owed the man his life and simply staunching the bleeding wasn't an option in his eyes. He finished a set of incantations to scope out the extent of the injury.

"His injury is far too grave. I must heal him completely. He risked his life to protect me," Tyrmorn spoke, looking the man in the eyes. “You have my utmost gratitude, Johoa. Your (sacrifice)will not be forgotten.”

Two other frontmen assisted in laying Johoa back onto the dirt. Tyrmorn watched the flesh mesh back together as he continued the incantation. The full spell was a three-incantation process that he would normally be able to handle, had he not overspent his Magic in the battle. The first set of incantations indicated how severe the wound was, the second set stopped the bleeding, and the third set would clean the wound and heal it entirely, preventing any infections.

Kes knelt down next to his partner. He knew Tyrmorn would suffer greatly from his expenditure, but he was man of high virtue, sacrificing himself where he felt it was due. There was no arguing with him, so he saved his scolding for later. He could tell how poorly Tyrmorn was feeling by resting his hand on his shoulder.

"Tyrmorn," Kes spoke softly in his ear. "You needn't cast the third incant, I know Johoa will forgive you." Johoa weakly nodded.

"No! I cannot do that! You know that I cannot! My customs must be upheld in this Bastide! He could die of infection. I will not let that happen," He replied. Tyrmorn held himself to a higher set of ethics than the rest of his family. Even though he was in line to become King, he did not use his royal title as an excuse to take advantage of his peoples, unlike his parents and siblings.

He felt as if the ground spun beneath his knees. He was becoming increasingly dizzy as the seconds ticked by. Breathing deeply, he swallowed around the nausea that threatened to interrupt his casting. The majority of the on-lookers seemed to lose interest and continued what they had been doing prior. Kes tightened his grip on his Mate's shoulder as he felt him pitch forward slightly. He wrapped his other arm around Tyrmorn's midsection. He poured a small amount of his own Magic into the man.

Tyrmorn's vision swam as he leaned heavily into Kes's grip. As needed to restart the third set of incantations three times before he successfully completed the entire spell. He gasped for a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. He smiled down at Johoa before he thanked the young prince once more. He then stumbled away from the men who took over in assisting the frontman. Kes followed him, walking quickly. He was incredibly worried about his Mate.

Tyrmorn tripped over his feet and plunged face first into the dirt with a harsh gasp. He coughed harshly before gagging and positioning himself in his knees. He felt Kes's arm wrap around him again as he gagged again. He let out a groan before coughing feebly and vomiting twice into the dirt at his knees. His breaths came in short ragged gasps. Kes recognized that his Mate was heading into an anxiety attack.

"Tyr, my love, relax, you're okay, Johoa’s okay. He's alive and conscious, thanks to you. You, on the other hand, you're in for a hell of week," He spoke softly, hoping to lighten the mood a bit. Tyrmorn responded by vomiting again. It was almost nothing but bile colored water, indicating that he hadn't eaten anything before the attack. It was no wonder why he was so weakened.

"Oh, darling," He sighed softly. His heart broke for him. He helped him stand before carefully lifting him onto his back to carry him to the castle. Being wrapped around Kes calmed him significantly, despite the situation. It was only about ten minutes into the slow walk before Tyrmorn broke the silence.

"Kes, I- I'm gonna throw up again," Tyrmorn muttered weakly between his returning panicked breathing.

"We're almost there Tyr, do you think you ca-" his words were cut off by the sound of fluid splashing onto leather. He grimaced and looked down to see his armor coated in watery vomit. Tyrmorn convulsed again, bringing up more liquid.

"I'm so s-sorry! I didn’t th-think I’d throw up so s-soon,” his voice wavered as he swallowed back another gag. “I’ll have one of my father’s men clean it fo-,” the words died on his lips as his body chose that moment to lose consciousness. His head lolled forward and against Kes’ neck.

"Ah, fuck," Kes sighed and began jogging back to base, no longer worried about jostling his Mate's stomach. He felt slightly sick himself as he felt the fluid snaking its way down his arm and down the collar of his tunic. When they arrived at their quarters, he gently placed Tyrmorn down onto their bed and stroked the wavy blonde hair out of his eyes. He took a moment to reflect on how reckless his lover had been and thank the gods they were still alive.

He stripped the man, and himself, of his soiled clothing and tossed them into a heap on the other side of the room. He felt bad for the house-keeping member on duty who would have clean the room. Tyrmorn awoke moments later and groaned weakly. Kes turned to look at him and saw him struggling to sit up and lean over the side.

Kes dashed to the bed with the rubbish bin they kept under their nightstand. Tyrmorn's stomach clenched angrily, leaving him gagging hard and choking on a stream of thin vomit, which thankfully made it into the bin. He struggled to breathe as he cried out in pain, gripping his throat.

Setting the bin down on the floor in front of the sick man, Kes climbed onto the bed behind him.

"Breathe, babe. Breathe with me, okay?" He cooed softly. He rested his hands on Tyrmon’s back and breathed loud enough for him to hear him. He stroked his back softly and slowly, careful not to move him too much. Tyrmorn did his best to emulate Kes’ breathing. When he got his breathing under control, Kes kissed his ear and asked him how he was feeling at that moment.

"Still nauseous and my head and throat are killing me. Kes, make it stop," he whined. Kes sighed in sympathy, knowing his Magic was nowhere close to an amount that would help him.

"I’ll make you some tea with honey. I know we have only one anti-emetic tablet left. I have to dissolve it into your drink for it to work quickly, okay?" He said and waited for his Mate's soft nod. When he pulled away, Tyrmorn flopped sideways with a long and weak groan. Kes kissed his forehead and headed into their kitchen. He returned fifteen minutes later with the promised beverage in hand, finding that Tyrmorn hadn't moved much.

"Tyr, I have your tea, sit up for me please."

"Mmm. Can't," He replied. In response, Kes helped him into a sitting position and pushed the cup into his hands.

"Slow sips. I don't want you throwing up again," Kes told him as he climbed behind him again. He ran his hands through Tyrmorn's hair, massaging his scalp slightly. He knew what felt good to the sorcerer and did everything he could to keep him calm and composed. Nearly an hour passed before Tyrmorn had finished his tea. He set the cup down on the bedside table and leaned back into Kes.

"Feel any better, love?"

"My throat feels a little better, even though it was bitter as hell."

"And your nausea?"

"Let's not talk about that, okay?" Tyrmorn said. Kes inwardly sighed. Based on his answer, he could tell that the anti-emetic tablet had done nothing to stave off his Mate's nausea. He began carefully rubbing his stomach until Tyrmorn had fallen asleep. He mentally prepared himself for the long week ahead as Tyrmorn recovered.

By the fifth day, Tyrmorn was very dehydrated and Kes was very tired. On the 6th day, Tyrmorn was able to hold down liquids completely. He had lost weight, but somehow kept his spirits high. Kes made him promise to be more careful with spending his Magic. By the 8th day, Tyrmorn was eating solid foods again and had started training again. Johoa had recovered fully and visited them regularly during his recovery. He even tried (but failed) to convince Tyrmorn not to pull a stunt like that again. Kes knew that this wouldn’t be the last time Tyrmorn would overspend, but he hoped it wasn’t for a long time.

Kes Dameron might have been a large man but you knew him as one of the most gentle souls in the galaxy. It did not surprise you that he melted instantly upon meeting his granddaughter. Emmy seemed completely at ease in her grandfather’s arms. “You forget how tiny they really are,” he said with a smile, his warm eyes filled with absolute affection for the little one he held. “I might be biased because I’m her grandpa--but she is the most beautiful baby in the entire galaxy.”

Poe chuckled, noticing that Emmy’s feet popped out of the swaddle. He leaned over and gently tucked them back in. “It’s okay to be biased--you’re her grandpa.” But, if Poe was honest, he agreed with his father--Emmy was the most beautiful baby.

You glanced at your husband and father-in-law doting over that small baby, and you smiled to yourself. Growing up you had never felt even an ounce of the love those men had for your daughter--you knew right then and there that she was not only the most beautiful baby but also the most fortunate baby in the galaxy.

Emmy began to get fussy and you realized that it was time to feed her. Taking her from her grandfather, you went to a more private place to give Emmy her lunch, leaving Poe and Kes alone for a few moments.

“So, she hasn’t changed her mind,” Kes said once you were out of earshot.

“No,” Poe said, shaking his head.

“Even as the Republic falls apart?”

“She insists that we should raise Emmy.”

Kes ran a hand over his face. He’d had these conversations with Shara--he never imagined his own son was going to have these same conversations. “A military base is no place for a baby, Poe.”

Poe sighed. He knew that, he’d been fighting with you since you told him you were pregnant about this. He was exhausted of having this fight. “I know, Dad, she just doesn’t want Emmy to feel abandoned--or unloved.”

His father smiled, sadly, at that. “There is no chance in hell that the little is ever going to feel unloved. According to the Princess, she was quite upset that her father was away for a few days.”

“Had her mother thinking she hated her.”

“No chance of that happening.”

“I told Y/N that--she wouldn’t listen to me.”

You returned then with the baby, slightly fussy in your arms. “Poe. I tried to put her down for a nap--it doesn’t matter if I sing that damn song to her--she just wants you.”

Poe stood up and gathered the fussy little girl into his arms. “Come on, Emmy, we talked about this,” he cooed at her as he made his way to her crib. “It’s okay when Mommy puts you down for a nap, her voice isn’t that bad.”

Kes laughed, softly, at the glare you threw his son. However, there was no denying that Poe’s warm timber when he sang was easing your daughter to sleep. In no time Emmy was sound asleep in her crib, making soft mewing noises while she slept.

And that’s when the commlink went off, summoning both you and Poe to command. You anxiously looked at the baby, sleeping, How could you leave her?

“Go on,” Kes said, assuringly. “I can watch her. I raised Poe didn’t I?”

“Kes, are you sure?”

“Sweetheart! She’ll be fine! Let’s go!”

Before you could even say a word, Poe had pulled you out of your quarters. “Poe! I can’t leave her, she’s only a few days old!”

Poe chuckled as you quickly were dragged behind him. “She’s been fed, changed, and is napping. She might not even know that we left. Besides, my dad is there. He knows how to take care of a baby. She’s in good hands.”

You felt a lump forming in your throat. “It’s not that, this is the first time we’ve both been away from her! What if she thinks we left her behind? What if she thinks we’re not coming back?”

He stopped and turned to look at you, seriously. “Oh baby, she’ll learn quickly that we’ll always come back to her, that we haven’t left her behind and we certainly didn’t leave her behind all alone.”

Sniffling, you nodded your head. “I...I know... it’s just...it’s hard, Poe. My parents never came back for me and they left me all alone.”

Catching the tears that fell from your eyes with his thumbs, Poe pulled you in for a quick hug, a quick reminder that you were loved now and not alone. And, as you began to make you way towards command once again, you knew that neither was Emmy.

Leia kept Poe behind after the briefing. Poe figured it was because she wanted to assign him another mission--it wasn’t.

“Your father is worried,” the General said. “He doesn’t think the baby should stay here.”

“Yeah, I know,” Poe sighed, heavily. “But I can’t convince her to let him take Emmy back to Yavin.”

She understood, she knew your past--Leia nodded, solemnly. “I told your father that I allow the baby to stay here as long as it’s safe--right now there is no indication that the First Order even knows where our base is. But, if things were to change, Commander, Emmy needs be brought to safety.”

He set his jaw and agreed. Poe would be the first one to tell you that Emmy needed to go if things were ever to get so out of hand that her safety was in jeopardy. “I’ll fly her there myself, General.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Leia smiled at him, gently. Everyone on the base had fallen in love with the baby, herself included, and she didn't want to be the one responsible for anything happening to that child. “Wish I could promise I didn't need you for anymore missions.”

Poe shrugged. “Comes with the job, ma’am. I know that Emmy doesn’t understand it now, but someday she will, someday she’ll understand that I’m doing this for her.”

She was touched by his intense love and devotion to his daughter; it only made her long for her own son. Clamping down on her emotions, she reached out and pat Poe on the arm. “I think she will, Commander.”

“I never knew I could love someone so much until she was born.”

“Your parents said the same thing when you were born.”

“They did?”

“Oh yes, just before you went to live with your grandfather.”

Poe cast his eyes downward, looking at his scuffed boots. He recalled his mother saying they fought because people were suffering, his father often told him he fought so his son wouldn’t have too--Poe wondered what Shara would have to say now. His father had apologized plenty of times that they didn’t do enough. “My parents wanted a better galaxy for me--I want the same for Emmy.”

Leia gently pat him on the back before ordering him to go spend time with his father. Poe tossed her a small smile and was gone. Sighing, she turned and looked out the window of her office. She wanted a better galaxy for that baby as well.

Kes stayed for three more days.

Emmy seemed to enjoy being held by her grandfather just as much as she did by her father and you concluded it was because they both threw off so much body heat that she was nice and snuggly warm. Poe scoffed at the idea; Kes laughed.

It was harder saying good-bye to Kes then you originally believed it was going to be. You had half-expected him to come here and demand that you send Emmy back to Yavin with him, but Kes had kept silent. It wouldn’t be until much later that you found out that it was Poe that had convinced his father not to say anything.

After Kes had said his good-byes, and made you both promise to take care of his granddaughter--he boarded a transport and headed home.

Poe was uncharacteristically quiet after his father left.

You didn’t question him about his silence until after Emmy was in bed for the evening. “Are you okay, Poe?”

“Guess I’m just sad that we aren’t on Yavin.”

“What do you mean?”

Sighing, Poe glanced at you with sad eyes. “I just pictured us settled down on Yavin when we eventually had kids. This isn’t what I wanted for either you or Emmy.”

You went and sat on the bed with him, snuggling into his embrace once he opened his arms to you. “How can you say that? Home isn’t always about where you rest your head but the people you’re with. As long as we’re together, as a family, we’re home, Poe.”

Taking a deep breath, Poe closed his eyes. “Promise me, sweetheart, when the time comes, when it’s too dangerous for Emmy to be here, that you’ll take her to Yavin--that the two of you will go someplace safe.”

“Poe--.”

“Don’t argue with me. Please. Just promise me.”

“Why are you insisting that I promise you this?”

“Because, I would never forgive myself if something happened to you, to Emmy. So please, please, just promise me.”

You saw the pain that flashed across his features as his eyes opened and he looked at you, desperately. Your heart broke; he just wanted the best for you and for your daughter. Your fingers ghosted along his strong jaw as you let out a gentle sigh. “I’ll promise you this... if you promise me to always come back to us.”

He rested his forehead against yours. You had no idea that he’d already promised Emmy last night that he would always come back--so he made that same promise to you now. “I will always come back to you, sweetheart. Always.”

Running your fingers through his soft curls, you sighed. Even if they were hollow promises, you both felt better and slowly drifted off to sleep together.

I was curious about what your thoughts are about Emma's relationship with her mother?

Well, Nonny... they aren’t wholly positive, that’s for sure.

Like most of the fandom (at least the pockets who have expressed their opinion on the subject) I loved Mary Margaret and Emma’s relationship in season one. I also feel they had some really beautiful moments in season two. Season three is where it all falls apart for me.

Now... in Snow’s defense, and as a mother myself, I can say that it is difficult enough figuring out how to be a mother when you get to start at the very beginning. Imagine getting thrown into the deep end with an adult child who had suffered so much trauma in her life, much of which you could (and as a mama, totally would) blame yourself for. In S3, Snow makes the very profound statement that she doesn’t know how to comfort her daughter. It’s the first lesson you learn as mother, but Snow never got to learn how to do it with Emma. All those baby steps of parenting that teach you how to be a parent were stolen from Snow and Charming as much as the years were, and that’s not something you can completely fault them for.

However, I’m gonna throw out my unpopular opinion and say that even if the curse hadn’t been cast, and they’d gotten to raise Emma, I’m not entirely sure the Wish Emma we saw in 6x10 would have been all that far from how she’d have ended up...

But that’s a post for another day. You’re asking about Emma and Snow’s relationship within the existing canon.

In the beginning of season two, MM jumps into the portal after Emma, because she’s already been separated from her once, and she’s not gonna let it happen again. In season three though, I don’t feel like she gave much thought to Emma at all before deciding she’d stay behind with Charming. Was it wrong for her to choose to stay behind with David? Not necessarily. But after everything Emma had said to her about being a lost little girl who didn’t matter, and feared she never would, I can’t fathom Snow not being the one to bring up the situation. Emma is the one who has to instigate the conversation, and this mama ain’t too happy about that.

And that’s just one small instance where I feel Snow failed, and I could forgive it... if she hadn’t kept right on failing, putting her relationship with others before Emma became a trend over the next few seasons.

And then came season five... I can sort of understand Snow’s defeated attitude that there was no hope for Emma once she became the Dark One. She’d had that premonition about dark, evil Emma we saw in the flashback in season four, and I’m sure that always stuck in the back of her mind. That desperation to not see Emma go full on dark explains how she was so unwilling to help Emma fight to save Killian, but it hurts me (so I can just imagine how much it hurt Emma) that the woman known for hope seemed to have no hope at all when it came to her only daughter’s life, love, and happiness. Not when the rubber met the road anyway.

I think Emma shows her mother a lot of grace, because she did understand some of the things I mentioned above. She, too, had to learn how to be a mother on the fly. She understood about missing those baby steps of parenting. Emma basically said as much in 7x02 when she told Henry about her pregnancy, and getting to do things she didn’t have the chance to do with him, and getting to do something good from the start. Also, as she points out in the beginning of season three, Emma is very aware that they are all the same age. Their relationship isn’t going to be the standard mother/daughter relationship, something Emma is very cognizant of early on, which I feel helps her excuse those moments when Snow falls short. Emma has the luxury of approaching her parents’ parenting fails with the wisdom and logic of an adult.

However, Emma is still their child, and while I think it fine that Emma can look past their failures and come to understand the whys and hows, it does not excuse the pattern of failure Snow kept exhibiting on the show. She just never seemed to let go of that self-centeredness I feel was the crux of her character flaw... though, I will say the back half of season six gave me hope that maybe she was finally starting to realize her flaws and faults as a mother (and a person) and work to change them.

So, yeah. As I said, my opinions of Snow as a mother aren’t great. If I were to ever write Snow and Charming as Emma’s parents (where you actually got to see their relationship and interactions, that is), it wouldn’t be the idealistic image I think much of the fandom has of the Charmings...

Okay I am happily willing to forget what I said about Krpkab losing its magic. I mean there are times when it feels frustrating to see characters showing unrealistic kind of behaviour but still, I commend the makers for trying their best to fill in the one year extension with as much positivity as they can muster!

Even though I had a fair idea that Sonakshi freeing Ishwari from her guilt of the past will bring some compassion in Ishwari for her, but the total transformation into Mother India was not expected so fast! Ishwari trying to bring DevAkshi's emotions on the surface played well on Dev but it failed to rise Sonakshi from the debris of cold and hard emotions that had accumulated around her with time. It was only when Sona was reminded of the warmth that used to fill her heart when Dev was with her, brought her back to life!

The quest of getting the Dixit sisters back together also was acceptable as Dev had ignored them long enough. Even Ishwari taking her time to accept Nikki's relationship with her boyfriend was the part that got me sailing in the boat. The level of maturity shown by Laksh is commendable. He has been an anchor for Nikki at a time when Nikki was drowning in grief!

Ishwari going out to work and using her time to learn something new is what I loved the best. Her old ways being welcomed and accepted by the new gen office was heart warming, even though a little far-fetched at times!

The incident that happened with Sonakshi made Dev over-protective. I understand when he wants to know about her whereabouts at any given time but trying to interfere in her work by getting it done for her through his influential power is too much!

Sonakshi is justified to want some space where she can keep her own identity safe. This does come from the past experiences as Dev is scared of losing Sona and Sona doesn't want to depend too much on Dev in case Dev does something rash to jeopardise their future together. Dev trying to compare how much love each of them have for the other is a silly tantrum that he is throwing. I'm sure he'll come out of it. Sona holding back her emotions is another part of her cold outer cast which she hasn't completely given up.

Vicky's foolish boasting about what he did all those years back was what we all had been waiting for. Sona finally coming to know that Dev was never behind sending her family away from their house is definitely going to thaw some of the ice gathered around her heart. Sona loves Dev enough to forgive him and move forward in life but this realisation will make her see how she had been quick to judge him and believe the worst about him.

From what we see about Dev launching the software well ahead of time shows how he still remains above the games played by Vicky. I still doubt that he knows about Vicky's plan. This was just a small trailer to show how Vicky will commit the real blunder very soon. I will not be surprised if in order to pay off the advance payment made on the software, he tries to mortgage Ishwari Niwas.

The side plots of Ronita's pregnancy and Golu teaching Soha how to cheat as if it was an art, are entertaining. Am waiting to see how they unfold. Dev bringing flowers for Ronita was a sweet gesture. This time, Dev will be with Sona every step of the way!

We Belong to the Stars, CH.3

A Resistance spy has sent vital information about the First Order’s super weapon before his untimely death at the hands of Kylo Ren. Now, it’s a race against time to obtain the information before the First Order destroys it. Leia sends members of the Resistance’s top squadron in the hopes that they can track the information down before its too late.

D'Qar, Resistance Base

L'ulo L'ampar was taken back in time, over thirty years to be precise, as he took in the young woman before him. If it wasn't for the blue and silver bb-unit following her, L'ulo would swear that he was watching his old squad mate, Sela Swift and not Sela's only daughter.

Evelyn was almost a spitting image of her late mother, with the exception of her eyes—she had inherited the Skywalker blue. She moved with more grace than her mother, something that L'ulo attributed to her connection to the Force. While it was no secret that Evelyn had closed herself off from the Force shortly after the destruction of the Jedi Temple, L'ulo knew that she couldn't just forget all her training and that her connection laid just beneath the surface. It was hard to believe that this young woman had once been the little girl that would grin at him when he stopped on Yavin for a visit just before launching herself at him for a hug, would call him Uncle L'ulo, would sit on his knee while he told her stories of the Rebellion, hanging on his every word. Now that child is fighting her own war, L'ulo thought, sadly. What would Sela say?

It was times like this, when there was a quiet moment on the Resistance base, that L'ulo was glad Sela was not alive to see what was happening in the galaxy. She had defected from the Empire at sixteen to fight their tyranny. It would break her heart to know that her children were now following the same path.

"Captain L'ampar," a voice called out to him. L'ulo turned to see Major Brance, shielding his eyes against the harsh sun on the flight pad. "General Organa wishes to speak to you."

"Be there in a moment, Major," L'ulo promised. Heaving a sigh he noticed that he'd caught the attention of Evelyn's little droid. "Lieutenant?"

Evelyn looked up from her work on her fighter, pushing a few stray, sweaty pieces of hair from her eyes. "Sir?"

L'ulo gestured for her to come join him. "The General wishes to speak with us."

Jumping down from the wing of her ship, Evelyn quickly fell in step besides him. Her droid rolled behind, following dutifully. "What do you think she wants to talk to us about?" the young woman asked, slipping the top half of her orange fatigues back on.

"She just came back from the Echo of Hope," L'ulo replied. "Maybe she has a reconnaissance mission for us."

"Snap left on one this morning," Evelyn reported. "Do you think she's finally found a replacement for wing commander?"

"Possibility."

"It's been months since we've had one and more recruits have been pouring in."

They entered the base and began descended the steps inside. It was a flurry of activity, like usual. L'ulo and Evelyn shouldered their way through the room, heading straight for the command center. Both pilots could see Leia, dressed in a simple top and vest, hair pulled back in a braid, standing at the console. She glanced up as they approached and her eyes fell on her niece for a moment, a mixture of hope and pain crossed her expression. Uh-oh, maybe I shouldn't have brought Evie, L'ulo thought, anxiously.

Leia straightened her petite form and offered them a smile. "I'm glad you're both here. There are some changes you both need to be made aware of."

Evelyn glanced at L'ulo for a moment as her aunt handed him a data pad. L'ulo looked the information over. Well, I'll be damned. "Did you literally smack the sense into him, Princess?"

"No, I saved him from an impending court martial for disobeying direct orders not to engage the First Order."

"Huh, not surprising; he was always a bit of a rebellious teenager."

"Does this bother you?" Leia asked the former Rebellion pilot, eyes darting towards the confused look on Evelyn's face.

"If you're asking me if I can serve under him, of course I can," L'ulo replied handing the data pad back to her. "His mother was a great pilot and a dear friend." Turning slightly towards Evelyn, he added, "But I'm not the one you really should be asking that question to, your highness."

Leia nodded in agreement. She reached for Evelyn's hand and gave it a squeeze. "Before I start, I wanted to talk to you before I went to Mirrin Prime, there just wasn't time; everything happened so quickly." The data pad that L'ulo had just been holding passed into her niece's hand and the General watched, carefully, for Evelyn's reaction as she read the orders on it. For a moment, there was no reaction, since it started off as a simple reassignment, however, as she read further, Leia could see Evelyn's jaw clench. "Evie, sweetheart, talk to me..."

Evelyn clearly was fighting tears, they glistened in her eyes as she pushed the data pad back at her aunt. "You finally convinced Poe to join us, by making him wing commander? Did he... has he asked about me?"

L'ulo took a deep breath. It was no surprise that Leia had asked Poe to be wing commander, the boy had possessed natural charisma since birth, and no one could dispute his flying skills. It also was no surprise that Evelyn was curious if Poe asked about her. He'd heard about the fall out of their brief romantic relationship—if one could call it that—he'd seen the aftermath himself when he joined Leia in a confused, heartbroken young woman. A heartbroken young woman, who would immediately ask everyday if Poe had sent her a message for a whole year after the formation of the Resistance.

"On Mirrin Prime, you were the first thing he asked me about," Leia answered her, honestly. "He wanted to know if you were okay."

"What did you tell him?" Evelyn asked, her eyes casting downward.

"Nothing but the truth, sweetheart," the General answered. "I could have punched him like your brother."

Evelyn's eyes snapped up to her aunt and they reflected some horror. "Kaleb did that?"

Leia reached out and pat her cheek. "He's just protecting his little sister. No one wants to see you get hurt again."

L'ulo saw a few tears spill over thick lashes and down her cheeks. She wiped furiously at them before turning on her heel and announcing that she had some more work to do on her fighter. Her little droid, took off after her, leaving L'ulo standing there alone with Leia. He sighed. "I'm glad someone smacked him about how he treated her."

"He definitely regrets it," Leia said, sadly, "and joining the Resistance is not his way of seeking forgiveness, although it could go a long way in that sense."

"Poe just wants to do what is right," L'ulo offered. He smiled with Leia looked at him surprised. "You forget that I helped Kes raise that boy after Shara's death. I know him just as well as you do."

"Then you know as well as I do that he still has feelings for her, and that she still has feelings for him, but both are too stubborn to take the first step," Leia drawled. "I can only nudge them in the right direction, but I cannot force them to speak to one another."

“Haven’t you already done that… by making him wing commander? He’s going to have to talk to her sometime.”

“Maybe, I gave them a slight nudge—the rest is up to them.”

"You know, your highness," L'ulo said, before he took his leave, "they remind me of another couple. I believe one was a princess and the other a smuggler."

It never failed, when she thought about him, the kyber crystal pendant he had given her, glowed a warm hue of gold.

She had to fight her tears, as she fled the command center, Evelyn did not need anyone to see her crying. Especially over him. She hadn't been sure why, but in the last few days Poe Dameron had been on her mind more frequently. It all made sense now, that he had joined the Resistance and was going to lead the fighter squadrons for her aunt. They had not had any contact in the last five years; everything she knew about what Poe had been up to since they said goodbye on Hosnian Prime, she knew through intel that their officers reported to her aunt.

Her fingers curled around the pendant, hiding its warm glow from people passing her. He’d given it to her in the hopes that it would soften the blow that he was not following her to help her aunt form the Resistance, that he was honoring his oath to protect the Republic, and that he was effectively ending any romance blossoming between them. Poe knew that by staying behind, keeping his command, he wouldn’t see her, wouldn’t have any contact with her. The Senate could not outrightly approve of what her aunt was doing, and therefore, the military could not either.

If Poe were to contact her, it could mean the end of his career. This didn’t lessen the void in her life. Poe had been her best friend. He had been more than her best friend—or so she thought before he turned his back, quite literally, and walked away from her on the tarmac five years ago.

"Hey!" a voice greeted her when she made it back to the flight pad. "Bunch of us are going swimming after shift is up, want to join? Snap's bringing the moonshine!"

"No thanks, Jess," Evelyn said, wiping her eyes dry. "I'm not in the mood."

Jessika Pava eyed her, suspiciously and then she saw how tightly Evelyn was clutching at the pendant around her neck. She frowned. Rumors had been flying around base all day about their new wing commander and Evelyn, how the pair had been romantically involved in the past. Jess didn't know who had given the pendant that her friend always wore, but she had her suspicions that it come from Poe. "Come on, it might make you feel better to get drunk.”

Evelyn shook her head. "Trust me, Jess, getting drunk isn't going to help matters. I think it's just best if I call it an early evening." Maybe in the morning it won't hurt that much, maybe he'll actually reach out to me for once...

"This have anything to do with Commander Dameron?" Jess asked, blatantly.

"What about Commander Dameron?" Evelyn shot back, noticing that her voice choked on his name.

"How everyone is speculating you had some kind of romantic relationship with him."

"You can tell everyone to stop speculating. It wasn’t much of a relationship, okay? I left for the Resistance, he stayed with the Republic. End of story."

Placing her hands on her hips, Jess glared at her. "Is it?"

Evelyn wanted to argue that it was, but even as she opened her mouth to speak, no words came out. Her hand was still clinging to the kyber pendant. "It has to be," she whispered, even if, in her heart she knew that she didn't want it to be.

Jess tossed her an incredulous look. "Listen, you don't have to tell me, but I'm pretty sure Poe was the one to give you that necklace. No one holds onto a gift like that if they want the story to be over. And let's be honest, your track record with dating... not so great. Maybe... you should give Commander Dameron another chance," she said as she walked away, reminding Evelyn once more that the pilots were gathering down by the lake later.

Letting go of the pendant, Evelyn gazed at it. He had wanted the necklace to be something to remind her of him, to take a piece of him with her wherever she went. Evelyn very rarely took it off; a lot of guys that had pursued her had noticed... Jess was right about one thing... her track record with dating wasn't that great. That's because you're in love with Poe, you have been for years, just admit it. Taking a deep breath, Evelyn proceeded towards her fighter. She had plenty of work to do right now; she could think about Poe later.
