ATEEZ SMALL PERFUME REVIEW: YSL — BLACK OPIUM

disclaimer: this is not meant to be a serious perfume review, this is something fun for me to do as I love perfume. each and every one of us have different tastes and preferences when it comes to fragrances. what works for me might not work for you, vice versa. notes:

top — pear accord, mandarin essence

heart — orange blossom absolute, jasmine absolute

base — black coffee accord, vanilla absolute, patchouli

my scent experience:

this perfume is very intense with notes of coffee and jasmine. it’s dark, warm and sweet from the vanilla and I’ve gotten some compliments while wearing it. the orange blossom does peek through between the coffee and jasmine while I don’t get the patchouli which is good as I don’t really like patchouli. it’s basically coffee and jasmine with vanilla. because the perfume is quite intense, it lasts around 6-7 hours on me.

I’ve heard so many people say they don’t wear this fragrance because it’s basic and all the girlies are wearing this at the club but honestly, I don’t care. it may be basic but sometimes you gotta love a basic perfume. whenever I wear this perfume, I feel like a boss bitch and you shouldn’t mess with me. that’s probably how Seonghwa feels when he wears Black Opium.

random story but when I was 15, I was at a department store with my mother and while she was shopping, I decided to check out the fragrance counter and although she didn’t let me wear perfume at that age, it didn’t stop me from trying them out at the store. I sprayed Black Opium and let me tell you, that changed me. that perfume was the one that got me into perfume at an early age but I didn’t start buying them until I was 18. weirdly enough, I didn’t buy a bottle until I was 23 and it was like reuniting with an old friend. this may be a basic perfume to some people but this fragrance holds a special place in my heart.

who would I recommend this to?

anyone who likes the scent of coffee with a hint of sweetness.

those who are looking into darker designer fragrances.

anyone who doesn’t care if this scent is basic.

notes:

top — bergamot essence, mandarin essence, green tea accord

heart — orange flower absolute, jasmine accord, matcha accord

base — benzoin absolute, moss accord, white chocolate accord

my scent experience:

the fragrance starts off citrusy from the bergamot and mandarin but it's also herbaceous with the green tea note. it's quite clean and refreshing but not too sharp that it gives you a headache which I really appreciate. as the perfume settles, I smell the white floral notes of jasmine and orange flower which continue the fresh scent vibes and there is a slight sweetness from the matcha, but it overpowered by the floral notes. I will confess, I'm not familiar with matcha (I prefer loose leaf tea) but I remember it having a subtle sweet scent. the dry down is sweet, warm and earthy from the white chocolate, benzoin and moss. we all know that I'm not a huge fan of chocolate scents, but because it's white chocolate, the cocoa bean scent is not overpowering so I don't mind it. I will say the moss isn't as prominent, but it does add that green element in the fragrance. think of a sunny afternoon and you're drinking green tea (not matcha but green tea leaves) and eating white chocolate chip cookies on your front porch.

the projection is quite subtle so it's a good perfume to wear in the office or at school but if you want something that turns head, this isn't the scent for you. the longevity is alright, it only lasted about 4-5 hours on me and as an edt, that seems reasonable. as someone who likes green tea and tea fragrances, this perfume is okay. I personally think there are better tea fragrances out there but if you can get your hands on it, I'd say test it out.

additional notes from me:

just a warning to everyone reading this, but this perfume had been discontinued recently. I don't know why Maison Margiela likes to do this, but they tend to discontinue some of their best scents like Lipstick On, Tea Escape, Whispers at the Library (my personal favorite) and now Matcha Meditation. I think there are some stores that still sell this fragrance so if you see it in-store and want to purchase it, grab a bottle before you can't. I bought a travel spray of this a few months before they discontinued it which is why I was able to write this review. don't worry too much, you're not missing out on anything extraordinary and there are similar fragrances out there if you want to try this out but are not able to.

anyone who likes green tea perfumes.

those who want a light and slightly sweet scent that is corporate friendly.

anyone who wants to try Maison Margiela fragrances.

if you've made it to the end, thank you for reading this review!! this is the first review of 2025, and it really had to be a discontinued fragrance. if you get the chance to test it out, I encourage it and if you can't find this in stores, I apologize for not getting this review out sooner.
