Alain Prost's final race entry was on the 7th of November 1993 in Adelaide. His final race win was at Hockenheim on the 25th of July that same year. From 1987 until 2001, he held the record for most Grand Prix victories. Only four drivers have ever equalled his record. Three of them would go on to break it. For the fourth, the so-called inevitable, most feel it's only a matter of time. Max Verstappen was born just under four years after Alain Prost's final race entry. Today, he shares the same amount of grand prix victories.

Prost and Senna remain two of the most significant figures in F1, and the shadows they cast still linger over the sport and likely always will. They passed the torch onto those who joined them on the grid and to kids dreaming of one day joining their ranks. Now that same torch is being passed onto a whole new generation, who hadn't even been born for what to many remains the ultimate golden era of Formula One. The passage of time is a bittersweet thing, and sometimes we can get swept in moments, and we should do so because there's no guarantee that those moments will last forever, only that they will remain golden in abyss of memory.

I didn't expect Max matching Alain's record to hit me quite like this. I'm immensely proud as few drivers will ever get to grace these heights, but I do have to acknowledge the bittersweetness of it all, that little ache that comes with time marching forward as the torch being passed on from generation to the next. Eventually, we're all just names and stories and records in the end, but as Alain himself said about that epic rivalry between himself and Senna, "After everything that happened, it was still a fantastic story, wasn't it?" Yes, yes it was.
